Announcing the Ventura County Wildfire Collaborative Building a more resilient future together! Prolonged drought and extreme weather impact all of our lives and it's happening now. These impacts are affecting the health and safety of wildlands and communities in California, manifesting themselves into large, devastating fast-moving wildfires. The Ventura County Wildfire Collaborative is a working collaborative that aims to mitigate the threat of wildland fires to communities in Ventura County, and by association, build resilience to reduce the threat of climate change. The Collaborative will collectively and holistically leverage the resources and knowledge of the Ventura County Resource Conservation District, Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council, Ojai Valley Fire Safe Council, Bell Canyon Fire Safe Council, and Jensen Hughes (Partners) to reduce the risk of wildfire countywide. The Collaborative’s mission is to: “Establish a countywide, collaborative approach to design, implement and maintain a holistic, wildfire resiliency strategy that builds individual, local and regional capacities to better prepare for, prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from potential wildfire threats for Ventura County neighborhoods and communities located in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), now and into the future.” In its first effort, the Collaborative secured $2.7 million in funding from CAL FIRE to implement six priority projects that will start to build a county-wide wildfire risk mitigation program currently being developed as part of the update to the Ventura County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). For more information visit the Collaborative’s website at www.vcrcd.org/vcwc. Town halls & Listening Sessions in YOUR Region The Collaborative wants to engage and understand how to better prepare Ventura County for future Wildfires. The group will be hosting upcoming community town halls and listening sessions in YOUR region with wildfire professionals and planners to discuss wildfire prevention, reaction, mitigation, and recovery. Community members are encouraged to join and make YOUR voice heard! To sign-up and be notified about future town hall meetings, newsletters, and other important wildfire-related information such as insurance plans, visit https://vcrcd.org/vcwc or reach out to Andy Spyrka at the Ventura County Resource Conservation District: andyspyrka.vcrcd@gmail.com | (805) 764-5135. Wildfire is coming, ARE YOU PREPARED?! Funding for this project provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Prevention Program as part of the California Climate Investments Program. The Ventura County Wildfire Collaborative Project, is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment– particularly in disadvantaged communities. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling, and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are located within and benefiting residents of disadvantaged communities, low-income communities, and low-income households across California. Schools model “offer versus serve” and “share tables” by David Goldstein
As the pandemic surged, school classrooms closed, but throughout most of Ventura County, school cafeterias stayed open. For several months, some school staff worked harder than ever. Cafeteria workers assembled and handed out “graband-go” bagged meals to kids. This provided nutrition essential to health and fueled brains engaged in remote learning, but it also created packaging waste and food waste. Now kids are back in school, so cafeteria staff at many schools switched back to far more efficient methods. To reduce waste, these cafeterias practice “offer versus serve” food distribution. Linda Jordan, public information officer of the Ojai Unified School District, explained, “Kids have a choice. As they go past the fruits and vegetables, they can grab one, or they can visit the salad bar.” Giving kids choices, rather than providing a pre-selected meal on their tray, “results in both better nutrition and less food waste,” she said. “Share tables” are another waste reduction practice at many schools. After making their choices, some kids still will not eat the items they selected. Rather than tossing their discards
In Brief
Ventura County Sheriff has new emotional support K-9 Originally trained to sniff out narcotics, Ventura County Sheriff K-9 Rocky has shown more of an aptitude to play fetch and is therefore receiving a new assignment as an Emotional Support-Therapeutic K-9. Rocky was purchased with community-donated funds and lives with Deputy Myron Bennett of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO). The pup’s new assignment includes increasing socialization and treatment compliance for inmates who are diagnosed with mental illness. Rocky provides a calming influence to those in crisis and can help lower anxiety in some during certain social settings. He is also a calming presence for those working at the jail, which can be a stressful work environment. Rocky’s presence at the jail is not funded with taxpayer funds, according to the VCSO statement. City of Ventura facilities fully open As of March 10 the city of Ventura has fully opened its facilities to the public after two years of closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In-person meetings of the city council are expected to resume March 21.
in the garbage, kids place unwanted but unopened food or cartons of milk on a share table in a place where others can take it. Kids who are not signed up for free lunches, or kids who just want more, can take what they want from the tables. The share tables are encouraged by regulators, according to Graciela Garcia, who manages food inspections for the Ventura County Environmental Health Division. “As long as it is done safely . . . [measures such as share tables] reduce waste and provide food to those in need,” she said. Nance Shirley, food service supervisor of the Pleasant Valley School District, pointed out a minor challenge to school waste reduction programs. The 2012 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, championed by Michelle Obama, set federal requirements for kids’ lunches, requiring each child to be provided with specific categories of foods. This is one reason why “offer versus serve” involves choices, rather than just simply a buffet line. It’s also a reason why, in some districts, the share table is in the lunch eating area, but technically outside the area designated as the cafeteria. As long as the child left the cafeteria with the piece of fruit or the carton
Offices and facilities will be open during normal business hours. www. cityofventura.ca.gov Public input sought on hazard mitigation plan Ventura County is building a Hazard Mitigation Plan and has published a draft document available for public comment and input until March 23. According to the county website regarding the plan update, the main goal of the plan is to “inventory potential hazards that Ventura County is most vulnerable to,” and to assess risks associated with those hazards faced by community members and how local resources, building and critical facilities may be impacted. The plan will also identify ways to mitigate those risks and impacts to contribute to a swift recovery following a disaster. There is an online survey with segmented comment boxes pertaining to each chapter of the draft document allowing the public to give feedback on specific chapters of the draft plan, which has been split into two parts. Questions can be directed to BonnieK.Luke@ventura.org. The draft plan and survey are online at: www.readyventuracounty. org/local-multijurisdictional-hazardsmitigation-plan-update/.
of milk, they were provided with the item. The school cannot be expected to ensure the kid consumes it. Instead, schools have other ways to ensure kids eat healthy diets. “Our staff has gotten pretty good at incorporating fruits and vegetables into entrees,” Jordan confided. “There is a lot of variety between school districts, and even when a district has a waste reduction program, it’s often up to the principal whether, and how, it’s implemented,” said Lisa McCullough, an environmental resource analyst with the Ventura County Integrated Waste Management Division. Helping schools set up recycling programs, she has worked with kids on the first step to planning better waste management practices; she has kids categorize and quantify their school’s waste stream. “At schools where milk is one of the mandatory items kids must take to meet the federal requirements for funding, full or partially full milk cartons are usually the biggest, heaviest component of the waste stream,” she said. At many schools, share tables are not sufficient to handle the volume of unopened milk cartons, and at some of those schools, cafeteria staff
Thousand Oaks seeks Youth Commission members High school students who reside in the city of Thousand Oaks are encouraged to apply to fill eight vacancies on the Youth Commission, which is an advisory committee appointed by the Thousand Oaks City Council to advise the city on issues related to youth in the city. Applications are due by April 6, 2022. The Youth Commission is made up of 13 members between the ages of 13 and 18; each member serves two-year staggered terms. Applicants must be entering grades nine through 11 in Fall 2022. Seniors with previous experience are welcome to apply for a one-year term. Commission and application details are online. Those interested can contact cityclerk@toaks.org, 805449-2151, www.toaks.org/youth. Remember to check smoke, carbon monoxide alarms The Ventura Fire Department is reminding residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. Detectors should be tested monthly and those with “nonreplaceable” batteries should be replaced every 10 years, according to the Venture Fire Department.
Giving kids choices results in better nutrition and less food waste. wash off the unopened cartons and put them back in the refrigerator before the milk has been out too long. In some cases, ice sheets on share tables keep items at required temperatures before the items are placed back in refrigerators. Although uncommon, some schools donate leftover food to food pantries or a food bank. Garcia noted the Retail Food Code in the California Code of Regulations specifically authorizes local educational agencies, including the county office of education, a local school district or a charter school, to donate “to a food bank or any other nonprofit charitable organization for distribution.”
Spirit of Santa Paula, which operates a shelter, recently sent a refrigerated truck to pick up 64 cartons of unused yogurt near expiration but still safe to eat from a school cafeteria. The lessons of waste reduction in schools can be applied at home. For meals with guests, or even just with your own family, you will generate less waste if you let everyone pick their own foods and portions, rather than dishing out and serving food. David Goldstein, Environmental Resource Analyst with the Ventura County Public Works Agency, may be reached at david.goldstein@ventura. org or 805-658-4312.
Smoke detectors should be in every bedroom, areas leading to bedrooms and on each level of the home. Homes with gas burning appliances like dryers, stoves and furnaces should have at least one carbon monoxide alarm installed outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home. www. Upper Ojai Search and Rescue gets new headquarters At their March 1 meeting, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors authorized the use of Fire Station 20, on Highway 150 in the Upper Ojai Valley, for the headquarters of the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team (UOSAR). In operation since 1955, the UOSAR team today consists of 30 volunteers and engages in many mountain, canyon and urban rescues each year, with an average of 3,000 volunteer hours performed by members at trainings, searches, rescues and various public events. Ventura County is allocating $30,000 annually to fund associated costs with the site that became available because a new Fire Station 20 was built a couple of miles west of the site along the highway. $5 million for Ventura River Parkway Trail

It was pretty normal except my dad was an artist in addition to being a house painter. He painted on canvas with acrylics, some abstracts, still life, portraits, pen and ink drawings and watercolors. He also designed some furniture. He was writing and illustrating a children’s book when his studio burned down accidentally. Depression ensued and he left for San Francisco.
When did your parents move the family to Wavy Gravy’s Hog Farm? Do you know why they chose to join a commune?
My parents and brother and sister moved to the Hog Farm in the fall of 1967. I was not with them then. I had gone to San Francisco and Big Sur.
What was it like living at the Hog Farm?
When I rejoined my family at the Hog Farm, I was told by the leaders that I was not really welcome as I was “jailbait” for the young men coming up to the farm to get high and play music.

As a wife and mother, she stayed home to raise her kids, then went back to college to earn a teaching credential. She worked in special education for 10 years, and is now retired and living in Ventura County. She’s been widowed and remarried, and takes delight in her three grandchildren. thing but typical. At the tender age of 14, she found herself smack-dab in the middle of the Southern California 1960s counterculture scene, eventually becoming a member of the infamous “family” of Charles Manson — and ultimately testified against him and his cohorts for the Tate-LaBianca murders of Aug. 8-10, 1969. Lake will share her side of the story, in her own words, in an interview with Ivor Davis at the Museum of Ventura County on March 24. She also answered a series of questions via email for the Ventura County Reporter on March 14, 2022. In the fascinating Q&A
below, the clear-eyed and articulate Lake discusses her youth, her involvement with the “family,” life after Manson and more.
VCReporter: Tell us a little bit about your childhood.
Dianne Lake: I was born in Minnesota and lived there until we moved to Santa Monica when I was 12. I was the oldest of three children and lived with my mom and dad until my dad left us for two years for California.
What was your family like growing up?
Were you specifically asked to leave? Or was your whole family asked to leave? And why?
I was not asked to leave specifically, but if I wanted to stay, I had to sleep in the attic and stay out of sight and I felt unwelcome. I had been given a loose emancipation from my mom and dad before arriving at the Hog Farm and my parents were not aware of this conversation with the leaders. All of the adults at the Hog Farm kinda looked after all the kids there, but I wasn’t really considered a kid at that point since I’d been on my own for a few months.
Where did you go after leaving the Hog Farm?
I was invited to stay with some friends of people at the Hog Farm who lived in Highland Park area.
When did you first meet Manson? What were those initial interactions like?
I was introduced to Manson and the girls in Topanga by these friends from Highland Park that I was living with. Meeting Manson and the girls was very magical, as they had been looking for me in San Francisco. My family had met Manson and the girls at the Hog Farm while I was in San Francisco and had been given a picture of me as they were going to go to San Francisco. So when I walked into this “party,” they all gathered around calling me by my name.
My understanding is that
you asked your parents for permission to strike out on your own . . . something akin to becoming an unofficial emancipated minor. Why did you desire that?
Yes, I did ask them to give me permission to be on my own. It was not easy living with five people in a step-van and I felt criticized by my mom. Mom and Dad were arguing about the roles of a man and a woman. I met a couple at Zuma Beach and we all moved in with them for a few weeks and I wanted to stay with them rather than keep going “down the road” with my family. On an acid trip there, I thought I heard God tell me it was time to leave home. So my parents agreed and wrote me a note that I had in my pocket for quite a while.
Did you choose to live with Manson originally, and if so, why? What appealed to you about that?
I did not choose to live with Manson right away and went between Highland Park, Hog Farm and Manson. They were getting ready to leave in the black bus for New Mexico and I didn’t want to be left behind, as I felt more love and belonging with Manson and the girls than anywhere else.
When did your experience go from being a member of the "family" to (in the words used on the Museum of Ventura County website) “chattel, a slave to Manson’s sexual whims and part of his depraved world”?
That’s pretty extreme from my point of view. I never felt like “chattel” or a “slave to his sexual whims” and depraved world when I was in it. However, there was a point when life became frantic, frenzied and scary and he didn’t want me around anymore. This was after we had lived at Spahn Ranch and then introduced to Death Valley Barker Ranch and his search for the bottomless pit. Ed. note: According to testimony given by Paul Watkins, a member of the Manson Family who testified against Manson in 1970, Manson believed that he and his followers would survive the coming race war in a city beneath Death Valley which could be reached by a hole in the ground. The Beatles’ White Album had been released and Manson thought they were sending him messages about the “black/white racewar” which became Helter Skelter. FEATURE awesome treatment that probably saved my life and sanity. Stayed on the same ward the whole time, learned to play the flute, crochet, went to school, church. Had a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurses who all were very loving and supportive. I had friends as well as examples of alcoholism and anorexia and bulimia to avoid.

motorcycle guys entered the scene. I was supposed to stay in the desert. When I had an opportunity to come back down to Spahn Ranch, I took it and Manson was not happy with me at all.
What was life like for you with Manson and his followers?
Our life was like any commune in the beginning. Getting and preparing food, washing up and cleaning up and laundry, getting high and playing music and singing and, of course, having sex. Later it became more sinister with preparations for this “war” and hiding out. I was no longer part of the inner circle and was a liability and so kept a low profile. He tried to take me back to my parents, but they were now involved with an alternative high school and caring for a bunch of kids my same age and I just felt crazy around them, as I was too indoctrinated by Manson’s philosophy, etc.
Do you have some thoughts on what attracted so many people to Manson? How was he able to get so many followers?
Manson had this uncanny ability to become whoever the person needed him to be. Manson saw our weaknesses and brokenness and fed on that for his own survival and manipulation to fill his need or [get something from] someone who could provide him with something he wanted.
When Manson and the others were arrested and later 10 —
charged with the murders, what was your initial reaction? How did that change as more information about the events of Aug. 8-9, 1969, came to light?
I was shocked to learn — first from Tex Watson and then later from the girls themselves — of their involvement in the infamous murders. I was scared, too, as I knew too much and could have been killed myself. Manson even threatened me with that.
You were first arrested at Barker Ranch in October 1969 along with other family members, and then spent some time in a psychiatric hospital. Can you tell us a little bit about that time?
I was arrested at Barker Ranch in Death Valley during the second raid. We were arrested for allegedly burning a road grader. It wasn’t until Susan Atkins was taken to Los Angeles for an outstanding warrant that she started talking to her cellmates about Manson and the murders that their involvement came to light. Before the grand jury in Los Angeles [in December 1969] we were incarcerated in the Inyo County Jail. Girls in one cell, guys in the other, waiting trial on the road grader burning. I had been cautioned not to say anything, so I didn’t even give my real name or age until I was going into the grand jury in Los Angeles. When they found out I was only 16, I was quickly sequestered and made a ward of the court. They committed me to 90 days observation in the psychiatric hospital, which turned into nine months. I received
Just before the fall semester of school started, Jack and his wife took me in as their foster child. It was a great experience going to school, although they could only put me in 10th when I should have been a senior in high school. I played flute in the school band, got my drivers license, learned to ski in Mammoth.
Did you receive any kind of therapy or emotional help after getting away from the Manson Family?
Just what I received in the hospital professionally. Jack got me into junior college when I turned 18 and I went to live in Los Angeles with a friend of my mom’s, unknowing that the Manson family had remained together at the Spahn Ranch with new recruits. A friend of the friend stopped by and told me I should get out of town because I was “hot,” meaning the family was looking for me. He invited me to come live with him in Spokane during the summer. I did and it was a wonderful summer of renewal. In the end, we fell in love and decided to go to Europe. We were there for two and half years and the Manson Family was in my rearview mirror. Tucked safely away, for the most part, in my skeleton closet.
Did you maintain any kind of relationship with your parents?
Yes, I did maintain a relationship with my parents. I love them both very much and understand how it happened. They apologized and I forgave them. They just got caught up in the whole Timothy Leary rap of acid and “turn on, tune in and drop out.” They rejoined society. My mom and dad both remarried. My dad has been dead for over 20 years and my mom just turned 90. Both became homeowners. My mom had two more children with her second husband.
Did you feel any reluctance to testify against Manson
at the trial?
are now?
Yes, [I was] very much afraid that he would get in my head. I was threatened with prosecution of perjury because I had lied at the grand jury, but I just wanted to tell the truth that I knew.
Yes. Sometimes I am amazed, but I give the glory and acknowledgement that only God got me through.
Tell us a little bit about the post-Manson years. How did you get back on track?
I got into college, got out of L.A. and then spent almost three years in Europe, where we [Lake and her boyfriend] spent six months in the London area working, and then over two years in Spain teaching English. I taught the preschoolers. Jim and I drifted apart after coming back to the U.S. I got a job in the banking industry, first as a file clerk in downtown Los Angeles and eventually, 10 years later, as a loan officer. I met my husband in Santa Barbara in 1978; we married a year later. We bought a house in Ventura County and had three children. I was able to be a stay-at-home mom for about 10 years then started working as an assistant for special needs students. That led to me going back to college, where I got my BA in human development, master’s degree in education and Special Education Teaching Credential for Moderate/Severe students. I worked as a teacher for 10 years and now I’m retired.
What’s life like for you now?
My husband of 36 years died eight years ago from a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer called Merkel [cell carcinoma]. I started grief counseling and also attended a seminar with Brendan Burchard, which gave me the idea that it was time to write my story. God opened all the doors that led me to a life coach, agent, author and publisher who helped my write my book: Member of the Family: My Story of Charles Manson, Life Inside His Cult, and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties. Writing my story was very therapeutic and cathartic, as I had buried it and was ashamed to let anyone know that story. Writing it gave me an opportunity to give glory to God for keeping me safe and returning me to a wonderful life. I’ve been able to tell a cautionary tale to other young people who might get “love bombed” by a master manipulator, and maybe give parents some hope that their child who has gotten manipulated will be returned to normalcy.
When you look back on those tumultuous years of your youth, is it hard to make sense of who you were then and who you
Do you reflect much on that time? And if so, what kinds of thoughts come up for you?
I have definitely spent a lot of time reflecting, as I have been interviewed quite a bit for articles like this and documentaries. I am amazed at how many theories and speculations, assumptions and misunderstandings there are about the Family. The continuing fascination with the subject matter and how many people claim to be members and/or experts on the subject. I am not an expert nor claim to be. I only try to tell my truth as I experienced it and as I see it now.
Are you in contact with any other people from that time in your life?
I have only recently been in contact with Catherine Share, which has been interesting as she is 10 years older than I am and Manson had charged her with keeping me out of his hair. So we did child care and cleaning up together and she gave me some insight as to how I was back then.
What are some things you love about your life now?
About five years ago, just when Deb Herman and I were finishing the book, I was reconnected with my friend Jim, who I lived with in Spokane and then Europe. We were married almost four years ago in a castle on the Mosel River in Germany during a Rhine River cruise. We travel a lot now. I have three grandchildren, ages 4, 5 and 12, which are always a delight. ♦ Dianne Lake will speak about her experiences with the Manson Family during Ivor Davis: Up Close and Personal with Dianne Lake on Thursday, March 24, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 E. Taft Gardens expands Art in Nature program
CIMM gets new logo
The Channel Islands Maritime Museum recently debuted a new logo, retiring its original logo after 30 years. When the museum was first established in 1991, its logo paid homage to maritime history with a realistic image of a tall ship with white sails rollicking on a blue ocean, set against a pale blue background. The new image is a much more colorful and abstract affair: a stylized ship in bright blue and an orange background suggestive of a sunset. The new logo was created by local artist and graphic designer Brett Bednorz. According to the CIMM press release, it was decided that a new logo should be created as the museum steps into its next 30 years. “The original logo served the Museum very well for the last thirty years. However, as we are at the start of our next thirty-year chapter, we decided that a new logo was called for,” stated CIMM Executive Director Adri Howe in the press release. “The Museum continues to evolve with a renewed and invigorated focus on quality exhibitions, education, and community. We wanted the new logo to reflect this. We love the energy and brightness that this new logo brings. We think it beautifully represents what the Museum is all about: the exploration of the maritime and marine worlds and the human creativity that continues to seek ways to interpret those worlds.” The new logo can already be seen on CIMM’s social media channels, and should be fully rolled out by April 1, 2022. cimmvc.org 12 —

Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve has expanded its Art in Nature programming and will now offer up to seven artist residencies. One professional visual artist or collaborative team will be granted a ninemonth residency from Oct. 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. During that time, the artist will have access to the garden grounds as well as the Taft Gardens Historic Art Studio to develop a single project or body of work, which will be shown at the conclusion of the residency with the Art in Nature Fundraiser Gala. The organization will also offer several shorter-term residency opportunities. A four-week rotational residency and access to the Protea Studio is open to creative professionals in both the visual and non-visual arts, making it appropriate for writers, composers, curators, etc. Additional “invitational” residencies, from two to four weeks, may be granted as well at the discretion of the Taft Gardens Art Committee. These residencies are a beautiful opportunity to find inspiration in nature, and enjoy time for thoughtful reflection and development of art. Applications are free; artists who applied last year are highly encouraged to apply again. For more information and to apply online, visit www.taftgardens. org/artist-in-residence.
60 years of PVRPD
On Jan. 16, 1962, the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District was formed to provide and maintain facilities and programs focused on leisure, recreational and athletic activities. The organization celebrates its 60-year anniversary in 2022 by inviting residents to enjoy the many parks, classes and more that it offers. Residents can visit any of the 28 parks managed by the district, or sign up for one of the classes being offered through April. Staff also encourage people to take an online survey to provide feedback, and share their favorites parks and activities online. Welcome to the board
Two local museums have recently welcomed new members onto their boards of directors. In February, the Museum of Ventura County announced the addition of Greg Monterrosa and Gabriella Navarro-Busch to Greg Monterrosa its 13-member board. Monterrosa is a longtime supporter of Ventura County, while Navarro-Busch is an immigration attorney. “The Museum is honored to welcome these two exemplary and engaged members of our community to our Board,” said Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw in a press release. “Greg’s dedication Gabriella Navarro-Busch to serving the people of Ventura County and experience on the board of Conejo/Las Virgenes Foundation will no doubt make an immediate impact. We are equally fortunate to welcome Gabriella, whose lead-

Rubicon buys artist housing
Thanks to the generosity of a new donor, Ventura’s Rubicon Theatre Company has been able to purchase a four-unit property that can be used to house visiting artists. The property on Poli Street is close to the company’s location at Main and Laurel streets. The donation was made by Karyn Jackson of Arcadia (a former Ventura resident), her sister, Nancy Allen, of Ventura, and Nancy’s husband, Leo Allen, who also committed to a future legacy gift. A legacy gift is a planned future gift that designates some part of an individual’s estate as a donation to a nonprofit. “This is the largest single gift in Rubicon’s 23-year-history,” Board President Doug Halter stated via press release. “It is a remarkable

PAUL BYROM ST. PATRICK’S DAY CONCERT | Thursday, March 17, 7:30-9:30 p.m. One of Ireland’s premier tenors, Paul Byrom, will perform at Cantara Cellars/Flat Fish Brewing Company on Thursday, March 17, as part of his 12-city U.S. 2022 tour. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with a popular Irish tenor, straight from Dublin? Many people remember Byrom from his days as a lead singer with the hugely successful singing group Celtic Thunder. But his career began long before – when he recorded his first album at 14 years old. He has recorded several other albums along the way, including last year’s What I Did for Love and the newly released By Contrast. He enjoys a career as an actor and solo artist now as well. Byrom’s sparkling Irish wit comes to life as he tells stories about his life and career. His concerts include Irish tunes, of course, as well as songs from Broadway and the pop world. An evening with Paul Byrom is not to be missed! Cantara Cellars andFlat Fish Brewing Co., 126 N. Wood Road, Camarillo, 805-484-9600, camarillobarrelworks.com.

Thievery Corporation to bring its mixed-up, multicultural EDM to Ventura Music Hall by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

entura’s newest music venue will be pulsing with hypnotic electronic multiculturalism when Thievery Corporation comes to town next week. This marks the first time that the genre-defying, influence-mixing band comes
to Ventura County, and it’s a coup for the newly opened Ventura Music Hall, which took over the space once occupied by Discovery in Midtown. Thievery Corporation has been a darling of the electronic dance world for more than a quarter century. But as any fan can tell you, the outfit founded by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton in 1995 is about much more than EDM. Everything from trip hop to dub to bossa nova, jazz and world fusion is in the mix, with lyrics sung in a variety of languages, including English, French, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish. The artistry of Garza and Hilton, brought to the studio and stage with the help
Some of that multiculturalism undoubtedly comes from the band’s hometown of Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital and the seat of numerous cultural and international organizations. But the D.C. punk scene was Rob Garza’s first musical love. “I was really into a lot of the punk and post punk, Dischord [Records] scene,” recalls Garza, who was a teenager in the 1980s and rocked out to bands like Fugazi, Bad Brains and State of Alert (better known as S.O.A. and fronted by Henry Rollins — who would later move to California to join Black Flag). He recalls getting into music almost by accident, simply by participating in an electronic music program, where he had the opportunity to play with synthesizers, drums and other instruments on machines. “That’s when I fell in love with electronic music and creating music,” Garza says. By the 1990s, he was a familiar face on the D.C. club scene, which is where he eventually met Hilton. “In 1995, a friend of mine and I, we were going to a house club. My friend asked, ‘Do you wanna check out this lounge a friend just opened up?’” That would be the renowned Eighteenth Street Lounge, where instead of hardcore punk, Garza heard bossa nova, dub and jazz. “It was something very unique at that time.” Hilton was there, and the two realized they had a lot of overlapping interests. They decided to “create a project,” sharing equipment — a common way that musicians came together in those days, as it was rare for any one person to have all the various equipment needed for a band — and using the Eighteenth Street Lounge as a practice space and studio. “We started off in the liquor room creating those first singles,” says Garza.

From the very beginning, Thievery Corporation followed a do-it-yourself ethos. “With Thievery, we had our own record label,” Garza explains. “We did everything very independently. If you had drive and a passion to create music, you didn’t have to wait for a label to discover you. “It paid off in the end. I think if we would have worked with a major record label, it wouldn’t have been considered a success, in the sense of a commercial success.” But Thievery Corporation was absolutely a success. Shortly after the duo began releasing singles, “all of a sudden we’re getting calls from London and Germany, wanting more . . . it just kind of snowballed.” The band’s first studio album, Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, was released in Germany in 1996, and in the United States the following year, peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums list. Nine more albums were to follow between 2000 and 2020, with The Richest Man in Babylon (2002), The Cosmic Game (2005) and Radio Retaliation all searing up the U.S. dance charts. The band also toured extensively, both stateside and internationally. “It struck a chord at the time,” Garza says of Thievery Corporation’s early success. “People want-
ed to hear a lot more of what we were doing.” Being independent was far from being a hindrance. “The business could be challenging . . . but people were falling in love with the music. We were part of the zeitgeist. That allowed everything to flow smoothly.”
Daydream-er
During the pandemic, Garza enjoyed spending time with his son, now 11. “Those types of moments you realize are really special. Being able to have quality time . . . seeing each other every day . . . it was incredible.” Thievery Corporation’s 2020 touring hiatus also allowed Garza and Hilton to pursue solo projects. Hilton produced three albums (Infinite Everywhere, The Impossible Silence and Ceremony) while Garza released Daydream Accelerator, under the eponymously named GARZA, on Garza’s independent label, Magnetic Moon Records. “I’m constantly working on music . . . and during the pandemic, it opened up a lot of time to explore those ideas and sketches. For me, it was a great time, to be honest. We’ve been touring and traveling for 25 years . . . which is OK, that’s part of the creative cycle . . . but I finally had time to stretch out.” Garza explains that Daydream Accelerator allowed him to pay tribute to the musical influences of his youth, “more what I considered to be pop. I really love that sort of independent spirit, New Wave synth sound.” As one half of Thievery Corporation, Garza has had the opportunity to work with the likes of David Byrne, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell. But with GARZA, he found that he “opened up to the spirit of collaboration even more.” Daydream Accelerator features the talents of alt-synth band Enemy Planes, deep house producers Walker and Royce, up-and-coming singer/songwriters Calica and EMELINE, and frequent Thievery Corporation vocalists Natalia Clavier and Racquel Jones. “To have these sort of different ideas to explore with different writers and producers, it allowed me to step out of my own head space. “I also got to work with a lot of young singers . . . that was fun for me.”
Back on the road
At the moment, however, it’s back to Thievery Corporation for Garza — and back to a busy touring schedule. “We’re getting ready to hit the road in the next couple of weeks,” he says, referencing The Outernational Tour v.2, which will take the band across the U.S. this spring and then to Europe in the summer. His break was a productive one, but he’s excited to get back to live performances — and finds he’s more appreciative than ever that he has the opportunity to do so. “It’s really such a beautiful thing in your life, to play music for people,” Garza says. “After doing it for so long, you take it for granted. Then during the pandemic, there was this sense that this could be taken away. But getting to do it again is so incredible.” ♦ Thievery Corporation performs with Boostive on Thursday, March 24, at Ventura Music Hall, 1888 E. Thompson Blvd., Ventura. Doors open at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www.venturamusichall.com.

To: Irma Gomez, Micah J. Jones Sr., and to all persons claiming to be the parents of the above-named person who is described as follows: name Micah Josiah Jones Jr., Date of Birth: 05/27/2019, Place of Birth: Thousand Oaks, CA, Father's name: Micah J. YOU ARE FURTHER ADVISED as follows: At the hearing the Court must choose and implement one of the following permanent plans for the child: adoption, guardianship, or long term foster care. Parental rights may be terminated at this hearing. On 06/15/2022, the Human Services Agency will recommend termination of parental rights. The child may be ordered placed in long term foster care, subject to the regular review of the Juvenile Court; or, a legal guardian may be appointed for the child and letters of guardianship be issued; or, adoption may be identified as the permanent placement goal and the Court may order that efforts be made to locate an appropriate adoptive family for the child for a period not to exceed 180 days and set the matter for further review; or, parental rights may be terminated. You are entitled to be present at the hearing with your attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, you are entitled to have the Court appoint counsel for you. At all termination proceedings, the Court shall consider the wishes of the child and shall act in the best interest of the child. Any order of the Court permanently terminating parental rights under this section shall be conclusive and binding upon the minor person, upon the parent or parents, and upon all other persons who have been served with citation by publication or otherwise. After making such an order, the Court shall have no power to set aside, change, or modify it, but this shall not be construed to limit the rights to appeal the order. If the Court, by order or judgment, declares the child free from the custody and control of both parents, or one parent if the other no longer has custody and control, the Court shall, at the same time, order the child referred to the licensed County adoption agency for adoptive placement by that agency. Place of Sale: Four Points By Sheraton Ventura Harbor Resort, Auction.Com Room, 1050 Schooner Drive, Ventura, Ca 93001 Estimated amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $814,678.44 Street Address or other common designation of real property: 159 North Venado Avenue Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 A.P.N.: 682-0-022-045 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The requirements of California Civil Code Section 2923.5(b)/2923.55(c) were fulfilled when the Notice of Default was recorded. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 18-20362-SPCA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
