Purple is the New Party

Let them eat tweets by Paul Moomjean l paulmoomjean@yahoo.com

I

f there is one platform that keeps us connected, even if completely flawed, it is social media. Our reliance on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and whatever else we use to promote ourselves and share our lives is so crucial to maintaining family relations, promoting businesses and supplying us with free entertainment. So how it functions is crucial to both our mental well being and our ability to communicate. That’s why it is terrifying to see how the billionaires are trying to take over and overstep their reach. Recently, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg developed Facebook’s metaverse, a digital community not unlike some dystopian future where people live inside their computers. To top that off, Tesla founder Elon Musk is attempting to buy Twitter for $43 billion, crying out that capitalism will save us and that he’s the victim of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) blackmail hit job. While we all concede the rich own the

country, we cannot let them own our most precious forums of free speech. Recently, Musk found himself in the middle of what I like to call “rich guy problems.” In his attempt to buy Twitter with his current Twitter shares, he appears to be going after the social media platform if only because he wants to control the platform and not maintain it. “I have sufficient assets,” Musk said. “I can do it if possible.” Musk went on to add, “funding was actually secured” but he is currently battling the SEC after using Twitter to potentially increase his eventual private stock. According to CNBC, “In September 2018, the SEC charged Musk with making ‘false and misleading’ statements to investors when he announced via Twitter in August that year he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 a share and had funding secured. Musk and Tesla eventually agreed to a settlement with the government and revised it in 2019. Under its terms,

Musk and Tesla each had to pay $20 million in fines to the SEC, and Musk had to temporarily relinquish his role as chairman of the company’s board.” [“Elon Musk says he’s ‘not sure’ he’ll be able to buy Twitter after $43 billion bid, teases plan B,” Lauren Feiner, April 14, 2022.] “I don’t mean to blame everyone at the SEC but certainly the San Francisco office,” Musk said, discussing the controversy over the take private tweet. “It was because the SEC knew that funding was secured but they pursued an active, public investigation nonetheless [. . .] So I was forced to concede to the SEC unlawfully, those bastards.” What we learned through this is that Musk wants to own the distribution of information. If Musk buys Twitter, he can use it to spread any and all information to the 330 million monthly users. He’ll privatize the platform and create a world where he can simply force any and all users to

see his vision first and the rest of the world’s last. Then if the SEC goes after him again, he’ll simply cry “freedom of speech” to hide his greedy intentions. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg is revamping Facebook by creating a virtual community where people can hang out in the form of avatars. So far, the images and examples presented are sad and pathetic, but so are most beta stages. Look at where online dating has gone. At one point only sad people were on Plenty of Fish and Match, but not with Tinder and Bumble; people are hooking up and using the platform to build their social media followings. This metaverse could become the way we never leave home. “A lot of people think that the metaverse is about a place, but one definition of this is it’s about a time when basically immersive digital worlds become the primary way that we live our lives and spend our time,” says Zuckerberg. “I think that’s a rea-

sonable construct.” Not everyone agrees. “Being in this metaverse will be a bigger part of our lives than being in the outside world,” Louis Rosenberg, a 30-year veteran of AR development and the CEO of Unanimous AI, told Business Insider in December. “And there are all kinds of things that are terrifying about that.” [“Silicon Valley’s metaverse will suck reality into the virtual world — and ostracize those who aren’t plugged in,” Katie Canales, Dec. 4, 2021.] Where Musk wants to control the flow of thought, Zuckerberg wants to control the flow of socialization. Eccentric billionaires slowly taking over the world and, like past leaders, yelling, “Let them eat tweets” as if we are all begging to let them control our lives and flow of information. In a world where inflation is out of control, we need the government to make sure there’s no social media inflation now too.

“A giant inferno” Largest structure fire in Camarillo history claims hotel under construction by Alex Wilson

rwilson@timespublications.com

T

.M. Mian has built numerous hotels over the last several decades since arriving in the United States from Pakistan as an ambitious young man with $300 in his pocket. Now a resident of Camarillo, he has faced setbacks and challenges over the years, but nothing as shocking as what happened the night of April 12. That’s when he learned his four-story, 122-room hotel under construction along the 101 Freeway in Camarillo exploded into flames, and was on a quick path to total destruction.

“I lost $25 million in the blink of my eye”

Mian was enjoying the evening on the poolside patio of his home in Spanish Hills when he got a call about the fire that had broken out just minutes earlier at the property, which was slated to become a Home2 Suites by Hilton extended-stay hotel. “I thought maybe it was a small fire, that I would go there and maybe one corner had started or something like that, but in my wildest imagination I never thought it would hit the whole building,” Mian said. As the hotel developer and owner drove down the hill, he could see a growing plume of black smoke rising into the sky, even from miles away. Arriving at the construction site at Las Posas Road and Ventura Boulevard, his knees buckled and he fell to the ground. He was witnessing the destruction of the most elaborate project upon which he had ever embarked. “Because I build them to keep them. I’m not a developer who builds them to sell them, so I want to do everything perfect,” he said about his properties in Texas and California, which include Hilton Garden Inns in Oxnard and Calabasas. After taking a day off to process what happened, he bounced back quickly with a pledge to rebuild. Speaking with the Ventura County Reporter at his home a few days 8— — April 21, 2022

after the fire, Mian was in a jovial mood, enjoying pastries, fresh fruit and mimosas with his employees. The fire caused no injuries – for which everyone was grateful. He even took his financial loss in stride. “I was self-insured so I didn’t

have insurance. So I lost $25 million in the blink of my eye,” he said with a laugh. “I’m very proud of myself. That’s a big achievement.” He plans to buy insurance to cover the construction project the next time around.

Mian said members of the community where he’s lived for 20 years have been supportive. “People I don’t even know are calling and saying ‘We are so sorry for your loss.’ It’s very touching.” Camarillo city officials spent

years searching for a developer capable of building a conference center, hotels and retail buildings across Ventura Boulevard from the Camarillo Premium Outlets before Continued on Page 10

Community clean up has come a long way

U

by David Goldstein ntil the 1950s, disposing waste was often a community affair in Ventura County. Neighbors hauled each other’s discards, caravanned or met up at local dumps, sometimes returning home with more material scavenged than disposed. Some of these sites, such as the publicly owned Ojai Valley burn dump, burned flammable items at the end of each day. Other sites, such as Robert Walker’s “See’ers by the Sea,” in Ventura, charged for the right to scavenge. Over three decades ago Walker, recalling the glory days of his business, told me his company’s name was a pun for “Sears,” jokingly comparing his operation to the biggest local retailer of the time. Now, in contrast, efficient waste collection companies or municipal fleets serve our communities with professional collection. Collectors contract with cities or the county, earning the exclusive right to charge

for picking up residential garbage and recyclables, and using uniform carts placed neatly at our curbs. These contracts generally require collectors to provide a provision for free disposal and recycling of items too large to fit in curbside carts. One way the local collectors meet this obligation is to offer residents free curbside bulky item pickup. By request, residents outside cities can have two items collected, up to twice per year. In most cities the limit is two items, one time per year. For example, the cities of Ventura, Ojai, Fillmore and Camarillo contract with their residential hauler, E. J. Harrison and Sons, for free bulky item pickup service to residents. Once each year, residents are allowed to place up to two mattresses, couches or other items at their curb for free collection. To use this service, residents must first call the hauler at 805-647-1414 and arrange for pickup. Some local haulers are also contractually required to meet the free bulky item collection obligation by helping

jurisdictions host community cleanup days. For example, the Ventura County Public Works Agency will host 10 free events between April 23 and Oct. 22 exclusively for residents of targeted unincorporated communities. Similar events are planned in cities. For example, the next event for city of Ventura residents — ID or utility bill required — will be May 21. Approximately 300 appointment slots are available online at https://form.jotform.com/220454392171148 or by calling 805-652-4525. The city’s appointment form also requires participants to answer an important question. “Have you looked into donation or reuse options for items in good condition?” Although many of these events have a reuse area, where the best items delivered are pulled aside for others to take, these exchanges, harkening back to the days of See’ers by the Sea, regularly fail to rescue all items of value. The end of many cleanups includes disposing items left in the reuse area. The city of Oxnard, in addition

to scheduling free curbside bulky item pickup, also provides residents with free drop-off days at the Del Norte Recycling and Transfer Station and in their neighborhoods. At the next scheduled neighborhood event, on Aug. 13, each of the city’s four regions will separately have roll-off boxes available at a central location for free recycling and disposal. Residents, verified by ID or utility bill, will be allowed to discard bulky items as well as recycle electronic waste and tires without rims, items not allowed at some other events. Residents of Simi Valley, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks and adjacent unincorporated communities benefit from a contractual partnership between the county and Waste Management’s (WM) Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. These residents are allowed free use of the Simi Landfill on designated days each year. The Simi Landfill maximizes recycling on these days with separate areas for concrete, asphalt, yard clippings/wood, tires, mattresses, metal and appliances.

Additionally, through a new contract with Athens Services, Thousand Oaks residents also have access to Calabasas Landfill, where they can dispose of up to two vehicle loads during three free days each year. Due to landfill operations and the presence of heavy equipment, no scavenging is allowed at landfills. The days of community gatherings at dumps have been replaced by efficient and safe management of discards. All of the new “spring cleaning” programs, however, are still important to prevent illegal dumping and increase recycling while cutting participants’ disposal costs. More information is online at: www.wm.com/location/california/ ventura-county/landfill/free-days.jsp www.oxnard.org/dropoff/ David Goldstein, Environmental Resource Analyst with the Ventura County Public Works Agency, can be reached at 805-658-4312 or david.goldstein@ventura.org.

Bringing

dreams

to life Wheat and Honey Events helps couples produce their perfect wedding day by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nshaffer@timespublications.com

he wedding day is meant to be one of the most beautiful, memorable and special events in a person’s life. A lovely location, flowers, delicious food and the betrothed couple bedecked in their nuptial finery are all necessary elements for this most splendid of occasions. But a wedding holds so much more on its tulle-and-lacedraped shoulders. This is a place where the personality, culture and values of the couple take center stage, and no two celebrations are alike. To truly create the wedding of someone’s dreams requires an extraordinarily personal touch. Such careful craftsmanship is the raison d’etre of Wheat and Honey Events. “We like to be available to our brides and grooms from the time they hire us until the end of their wedding,” explains owner Annette Kirkhuff. “A lot of people say I’m like a Mama Bear — I care about their weddings as much as their parents do.”

Bringing a vision to life

Wedding coordinators come in all flavors (and price points), of course. There are those who will

Annette Kirkhuff, founder of Wheat and Honey Events. help you on the big day, directing florists and caterers, getting guests seated and prompting the walk down the aisle. There are those who will work with the couple for a month or so beforehand, helping to organize and finalize the details. But Kirkhuff prefers to work with her couples for a year or more, to help make sure every aspect is handled without a hitch. “I’m not a fan of the ‘coordinator for a month or a day’ model,” she says. “We spend a lot of time

together. I need to understand their vision and their ideas.” Wheat and Honey is based in Simi Valley, but puts on weddings (and other events) all over Southern California. Often, Kirkhuff comes on board once the couple has set a date and booked the venue — although she’s also been the one to help them find their location, too. Regardless of which comes first, Wheat and Honey is involved throughout the entire planning process. “We work with the bride and groom from the beginning to the end,” Kirkhuff confirms. Communication is key — to get a sense for what the couple is imagining, but also to get to know them. What do they like and dislike? What are their challenges? What kind of budget do they have, and what are their top priorities? Kirkhuff is fully available to offer advice, support and expertise to hammer out all the details. With an excellent eye for design, Kirkhuff will execute the look and feel of a wedding that reflects what the couple envisions, whether that’s a sophisticated black-tie affair or a rustically elegant outdoor soiree. But April 21, 2022 —

Trends for2022

Soft florals create a romantic wedding cake.

Issue first and foremost, she sees the design process as a group endeavor. “We like to collaborate with our brides and grooms to make their wedding personal and collaborate on design,” she says. “When they walk away, they can feel like it's their wedding.” But Kirkhuff’s skills go way beyond the look of the event. She’s fully prepared to guide her clients through every step of the wedding planning process. Where and how to spend their budget, finding the right vendors (from rentals and caterers to photographers and florists to hair and makeup people), where flexibility might be required. “We get an idea for a budget and a vision and prioritize vendors — what’s most important? We don’t want any surprises on the day of . . . [Couples] spend a lot of money on these weddings. They need to be executed the way you talk about.”

Issue

Personal touch with years of experience

Kirkhuff grew up in North Hollywood, and came to Ventura County in 2008, working for Command Performance Catering. As the sales and event manager, she flawlessly executed around 150 events

Annette Kirkhuff of Wheat and Honey Events is quick to say that every wedding is as unique as the people getting married, and trends can be hard to determine. But there are a few things that seem to have become popular the last few years.

a year. A photographer friend, who had seen Kirkhuff in action, noted that she had more to offer than just catering skills. Eventually, she decided to take a risk and branch out on her own. In 2016, she opened Wheat and Honey Events with her daughter, Katie, who had run a small company called A Day to Remember. (Katie now lives in Texas and operates Wheat and Honey Events in the Dallas area.) With years of experience under her belt and a solid reputation for professionalism and customer service, she quickly established Wheat and Honey as a leader in the industry, putting on dozens of wedding, corporate and nonprofit events every year. For 2022, the company has been nominated in no less than three categories — Best Overall Vendor, Best Event Design and Best Wedding Planner — by California Wedding Day magazine.

s k o o r B y d n Ci

“White is really big . . . People are doing a lot of white weddings, with white colors and white florals, or mixing white with soft florals.” She attributes some of this to the prevalence of Pinterest and Instagram, both of which are “huge in our business.” A bride sees a photo of something she likes, and tries to emulate that. And on these platforms, “white has been big these last two years.”

Colored suiting

Interestingly enough, she is seeing more color showing up in menswear, and a move away from high formality. “I’ve seen a lot of tuxes with color . . . and more casual weddings with cocktail attire rather than black tie.”

Sleeves in style

Kirkhuff’s knowledge of all things related to events no doubt plays a role in Wheat and Honey’s success. But it’s her personal touch and genuine love for what she does that has couples clamoring for her services when they’re ready to tie the knot. “It isn’t just a job for us,” says Kirkhuff. “I spend a year with the bride and groom and we say goodbye at the end of their wedding. We miss them! Developing the relationships with vendors as well as families is one of the things I love most about this business.”

Planning during a pandemic

“PERMANENT MAKE-UP” Before

White on White

“When the pandemic hit, it affected our business . . . along with every other business in the world,” says Kirkhuff. The weddings may have been put on hold, but she was still there for her couples, who needed her more than ever.

For wedding dresses, Kirkhuff says, “Trending right now are sleeves. A lot of brides are able to have sleeves that are detachable — so that they can take them off for the reception, for example.”

Breaking with tradition

As relationships and conventions have changed, so have wedding couples and parties. Weddings for samesex or nonbinary couples are on the rise, and attendants run the gamut. “A couple of my weddings have had flower boys and men rather than flower girls. I’ve also seen bridesmen and groomswomen.”

Live musicians with DJs

“I’m finding a lot of brides and grooms bring in a live DJ — maybe a drummer or another musician playing while the DJ is spinning.”

Food for thought on food trucks

Food trucks have grown in popularity, particularly for outdoor and more casual weddings, but Kirkhuff cautions against jumping too quickly on this particular bandwagon. “Food trucks don’t work for traditional weddings,” she says. “They don’t have people serving the guests and taking care of them. Sometimes the bride and groom don’t feel like food is their priority, and that’s fine . . . However, it’s important to have really good service no matter what you’re eating.”

“We worked with clients to move their wedding dates into 2021. Some we’d been working with for over 30 months! We all work together in this industry to make this as smooth as possible for our clients.” Kirkhuff kept busy with some style shoots and mirco-weddings, but never stopped letting her clients know that they were valued and still had her support. Again, that personal touch for which Wheat and Honey Events is known was a balm to

many couples nervous about COVID, their weddings and everything else. When vaccines became available, weddings were back on the books in 2021, and it hasn’t slowed down since. According to Kirkhuff, clients are pleased that things have opened up even more in 2022, with mask mandates dropped, for example. But there are still conversations to be had in the wake of the coronavirus. “We talk a little bit about if COVID hits again,” she explains. “We have clauses in our contracts to protect our clients, too. And of course, we are fully compliant with all health and safety regulations.”

Hospitality heart

A few things Kirkhuff emphasizes again and again about the wedding process: Communication is incredibly important, and the vision of the wedding couple is paramount. Kirkhuff also feels very strongly that the betrothed should be able to enjoy their big day . . . not feel stressed out about it. From start to finish, Wheat and Honey Events will guide, advise and support clients through every aspect. As Kirkhuff states on the company’s website: “We at Wheat and Honey Events . . . allow you to be a guest at your own event.” “A wedding coordinator and planner needs to have a hospitality heart,” Kirkhuff insists. “Couples should see happy faces from all the vendors and guests to make sure their day is a loving day. or over 50 years, Lynn’s Jewelry Studio in Ventura has been providing the finest metal and gemstone creations to Southern California customers. Founded in 1970 by Bob Lynn, the shop has a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship surpassed only by its customer service and passion for unique design. Current owner John Muscarella, who took over from Lynn after the founder retired in 2017, is maintaining that legacy while building one of his own. Early start Originally from the East Coast, Muscarella’s family moved to California when he was 10 years old. He grew up in Thousand Oaks and attended high school in Newbury Park, where his passion for jewelry creation and design was forged. “Newbury Park High School had a jewelry class . . . and I fell in love with jewelry. I was a sophomore in high school.” Muscarella prefers to work with his hands, and enjoys crafts like woodworking and stained glass as well. But his first love has always been jewelry. “Working from the idea to taking that concept and creating a model to casting it in metal to the finished product — I still love it today.” Muscarella learned his trade on the job, noting that he has held exactly three jobs since he began working in 1978: first at Adelphi Jewelers in Thousand Oaks, later Bill’s Custom Jewelry and Repair in Camarillo. His career with Lynn’s began in 1996, and he’s been there ever since.

and the diamond “is put into a design that she has a decision in.” “Sometimes, the bride-to-be comes in, picks out a couple of designs we have in stock, and then he comes back and chooses something from what she has picked out. That way, she gets something that she likes, but he has a choice, too.” The most fun, however, “is when they come in and we sit down and they have pictures of what they want. We’ll combine the different designs and they get something that is just for them.” Lynn’s has a very handy tool to get that process started: a display box with a variety of stones in several sizes and cuts, with bands and settings to go with them. Customers can try out an array of configurations and sizes, and see how they look on the hand; like a LEGO® set for jewelry.

pieces — when she learned how to sign her name, I converted her signature into a charm.” He also gets ideas by talking to his customers. He enjoys the process of combining his design sensibility with their imagination, and finds that this process is rewarding creatively and socially. Many of his customers become friends. But in truth, the muse strikes Muscarella often and just about anywhere. When he travels, unusual things catch his eye: the shape of a wrought iron fence, an antique door hinge, crown molding. “I take pictures of the weirdest things,” he says with a laugh. “I see jewelry design in everything. I’ve dreamt of designs at times.” Tools of the trade And sometimes, there’s an unexBehind the sparkling display cases plainable but very real connection is Muscarella’s workshop, where the to a stone. The opportunity to learn design, torching, soldering, finishing and polishing from a master jeweler with Muscarella’s decades of experience is a rare one, indeed — and students come from all over Southern California to attend. A gem of a career Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, opals, pearls, tourmalines . . . Muscarella has made beautiful jewelry with all of these and more. One special stone is the Gabrielle cut diamond, created by master cutter Gabriel S. “Gaby” Tolkowsky. Prized for its incredible brilliance achieved with 105 facets (an ideal cut has only 58), Gabrielle diamonds are no longer being made — and thus are very hard to come by. He loves all gems and stones, but Muscarella’s favorite might be the chrysoberyl cat’s eye, which exhibits natural color changes. Look on his right hand to see a particularly beautiful example . . . set in a custom band designed by the jeweler himself. Whether he’s creating a wedding set, giving new life to old jewelry or designing something completely original, Muscarella brings as much passion to his work today as he did all those years ago as a teenager in his first jewelry class. “I found what I love,” he says. “There are so many things you can do. Anything can be created.” Lynn’s Jewelry Studio, 4572 Telephone Road, Suite 906, Ventura, 805-642-5500, lynnsjewelry.com. April 21, 2022 —

ruce Barrios has been winning accolades for his work as a wedding DJ for decades. There’s probably nobody in Ventura County with a more useful perspective to advise couples planning weddings; he knows all the most effective ways to let music contribute to a memorable event.

From roller skates to wedding bells

Barrios started his DJ career at Ventura’s Skating Plus when he was only 17 years old. The job didn’t come naturally at first, but Barrios learned quickly, he said. “I was scared, frightened. It was not my thing. I didn’t know how to talk to crowds. I skated and enjoyed music, but not enough to pick the music,” Barrios recalled. “And so Outdoor wedding venues are in demand. I became a DJ. I loved it. It went Submitted photo very well.” His bosses at Skating Plus even encouraged never losing more than 10% of your floor,” he Barrios to enter a nationwide competition for said. “Using a lot of transition songs from rock roller rink DJs and he came in second. to dance to oldies. KATHLEEN MADIGAN on their timeline. I work with the caterers and coordinators and we just create the event they always dreamed of, but not stealing the show.” Barrios noted that there are many reasons he loves his job helping couples on their big day. “It’s a celebration. Everybody there is in a positive bubble at these weddings. It’s fun. I love music. I love people. I love food. It’s a perfect gig and I get paid to be there. I get paid to go to parties.” The DJ should not steal the show, but Barrios insists that choosing a good DJ is a critical component of a successful and fun wedding. “Music can make or break a wedding. If the music is bad or boring, and it puts everyone to sleep, they are going to leave early,” he explained. “If it’s upbeat and has energy, people are going to like it and stay. They’re going to feel the vibe.” Barrios added that it’s important for couples to give plenty of thought to the songs they want to hear. “What I try to do is create a vibe that represents the bride and groom’s personalities,” he said. “We sit down and we seriously select

every song, from the very first song to the last dance.”

DJs in demand

Barrios recommended that couples book a DJ as far in advance as possible, especially in light of the pandemic. Many couples rescheduled their weddings because of COVID, or postponed celebrations until people could gather safely in groups again. Hence, the increase in the number of weddings has created unprecedented demand for DJs. While Barrios is happy to see his industry rebound, it’s causing challenges for couples looking for wedding vendors. “It’s a little overwhelming, to be honest with you, trying to answer all the phone calls and emails and inquiries for these weddings going on for the next year and a half. Everybody in my industry is getting maxed out right now.” ♦ Bruce Barrios Productions, 2481 Grand Ave., #5342, Ventura, 805-658-7565, www. brucebarrios.com.

IN GOOD TASTE

rwilson@timespublications.com ouples planning to get married have more choices than ever when it comes to wedding cakes. While traditional, tiered wedding cakes sometimes cost more than $2,000, less expensive options can bring the same amount of joy if couples put their heart and soul into creating something unique to their union. One thing in common with all the wedding cake creators who shared stories with the Ventura County Reporter is that they love baking wedding cakes nearly as much as newlyweds adore each other.

SUGAR LAB BAKE SHOP 1575 Spinnaker Dr., #105B, Ventura 805-765-4292 www.sugarlabbakeshop.com

Sugar Lab Bake Shop has been in business for 10 years in three different locations, but its current spot at Ventura Harbor Village is certainly the sweetest. Owner Ali Kenis makes wedding cakes and a wide variety of baked goods at the seaside location. Sales have doubled since moving to the pedestrian-friendly setting a year ago. A GIFT OF TASTE 4160 Market St., Ventura 805-535-4414 agiftoftaste.com

Evan Chavez manages A Gift of Taste in Ventura and keeps a close eye on the latest wedding cake trends. Many couples are asking for wedding cakes known as “naked” cakes with no frosting and others that are “semi-naked.” “It has a very limited amount of icing on it. You can see the layers of the cake,” he explained. Chavez suggests couples do research on the Internet and then stop by the bakery in person to look through photo albums for additional inspiration. “It’s very satisfying to make their idea come to life. A lot of times people come with concepts and not a specific theme in mind. We do our best to accommodate their vision and bring it to life for them,” he said. April 21, 2022 —

2022 | WHEELHOUSE EDUCATION

GROWING CANNABIS AT HOME Written by Wheelhouse Staff Last week, we covered the legal regulations surrounding growing cannabis. Today we are going to cover more information on growing your own marijuana at home.

30% OFF CLONES

CODE: CLONE30 EXPIRES APRIL 30TH, 2022

Clones vs. Seeds If you want to get started on growing cannabis at home, we highly recommend that you start with clones rather than seeds due to several benefits such as: Starting with clones guarantees that the gender of the plant is female. Growing clones is way easier than starting with a seed and are far less delicate than seeds. Rooted clones are easier to nurture and have a lesser chance of dying than newly sprouted seedlings. Having a clone jump starts you by several weeks, which helps to save time in the long-run. Vegetative Growth Additionally, clones are highly recommended because they are usually considered to be in the vegetative growth stage where the growth of the plant soars once being transferred to a larger pot. Sativa plants are lanky and don't have as many leaves in comparison to indica plants, which are shorter and denser. During this stage, it is crucial that you are able to provide warm water, moist air, nitrogen and potassium-rich nutrients, and ample soil space to help the plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall. Cannabis plants should always be in welldrained soil. If you are using an indoor grow room, make sure that plants are kept on an 18-hour daylight cycle with a 6-hour night period. Fun Fact Since light cycles control when a plant goes from the vegetative stage to flowering, they can be kept in vegetation forever. This is used to skip the germination stage and grow plans from clones. Where to Buy Clones If you want to buy clones, we always recommend purchasing them from a licensed dispensary that offers high-quality clones, such as Wheelhouse. We currently carry a variety of hybrid and sativa clones and have knowledgeable budtenders who can help provide the best tips on how to nurture clones to their maximum potential at home. You can order our clones in-store or online by visiting wheelhouseph.com. Please note that due to state regulations we do not deliver clones.

About Wheelhouse Wheelhouse is an award-winning dispensary in Port Hueneme, CA. We are a minorityowned business that is focused on revitalizing and reinvesting in our community. Since our grand opening in 2019, we have given an estimated $170,000 to local charities in Ventura County, CA.

After making such an order, the Court shall have no power to set aside, change, or modify it, but this shall not be construed to limit the rights to appeal the order. If the Court, by order or judgment, declares the child free from the custody and control of both parents, or one parent if the other no longer has custody and control, the Court shall, at the same time, order the child referred to the licensed County adoption agency for adoptive placement by that agency. The rights and procedures described above are set forth in detail in the California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26. You are referred to that section for further particulars. Michael J. Instructions for Law Enforcement Enforcing the Restraining Order This order is enforceable by any law enforcement agency that has received the order, is shown a copy of the order, or has verified its existence on the California Restraining and Protective Orders System (CARPOS). If the law enforcement agency has not received proof of service on the restrained person, the agency must advise the restrained person of the terms of the order and then must enforce it. Violations of this order are subject to criminal penalties. Start Date and End Date of Orders This order starts on the date next to the judge's signature on page 4. The order ends on the expiration date in item 4 on page 1. Arrest Required if Order Is Violated If an officer has probable cause to believe that the restrained person had notice of the order and has disobeyed the order, the officer must arrest the restrained person. (Pen. Code, §§ 836(c)(1), 13701(b).) A violation of the order may be a violation of Penal Code section 166 or 273.6. Agencies are encouraged to enter violation messages into CARPOS. Notice/Proof of Service The law enforcement agency must first determine if the restrained person had notice of the order. Consider the restrained person "served" (given notice) if (Pen. Code, §836(c)(2)): • The officer sees a copy of the Proof of Service or confirms that the Proof of Service is on file; or • The restrained person was informed of the order by an officer. An officer can obtain information about the contents of the order and proof of service in CARPOS. If proof of service on the restrained person cannot be verified, the agency must advise the restrained person of the terms of the order and then enforce it. If the Protected Person Contacts the Restrained Person Even if the protected person invites or consents to contact the restrained person, this order remains in effect and must be enforced. The

order and proof of service in CARPOS. If proof of service on the restrained person cannot be verified, the agency must advise the restrained person of the terms of the order and then enforce it. If the Protected Person Contacts the Restrained Person Even if the protected person invites or consents to contact the restrained person, this order remains in effect and must be enforced. The protected person cannot be arrested for inviting or consenting to contact with the restrained person. The order can be changed only by another court order. (Pen. Code, §13710(b).) Conflicting Orders - Priorities for Enforcement If more than one restraining order has been issued, the orders must be enforced according to the following priorities 1. EPO: If one of the orders is an Emergency Protective Order (form EPO001) and is more restrictive than other restraining or protective orders, it has precedence in enforcement over all other orders. 2. No Contact Order: If there is no EPO, a no-contact order that is included in a restraining or protective order has precedence over any other restraining or protective order. 3. Criminal Order: If none of the orders includes a no contact order, a domestic violence protective order issued in a criminal case takes precedence in enforcement over any conflicting civil court order. Any nonconflicting terms of the civil restraining order remain in effect and enforceable. 4. Family, Juvenile, or Civil Order: If more than one family, juvenile, or other civil restraining or protective order has been issued, the one that was issued last must be enforced. Clerk's Certificate I certify that this Temporary Restraining Order is a true and correct copy of the original on file in the court. Date: December 14, 2021 Sherri R.
