Power to Speak

Yes on Measures A, B by Phil White

W

hat are Measures A and B, and why is it so important for Ventura County voters to vote “yes” when oil companies are telling them to vote “no?” Here’s the short answer: Approving Measures A and B will confirm that voters agree that all new oil well development in Ventura County should be subject to the modern environmental standards already approved by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors back in 2020. When they approved the 2040 General Plan in 2020, the supervisors approved policies to allow and encourage continued oil development in Ventura County, but also required that any new drilling comply with the modern environmental standards applied in other jurisdictions in California and the country. These standards were developed in the General Plan update process that took place over four years, including many hundreds of hours of meetings and pub-

lic hearings, with input from energy, economic and environmental experts. The oil development standards were put there to protect air, water, public health and disadvantaged communities, and to address climate change while still allowing oil development to continue. Until 2020, oil companies on properties with old, antiquated permits exploited a loophole in county ordinances that they used to avoid environmental review and conditional use permits when planning new wells. In 2020 the Ventura County Council’s office presented the supervisors with a legal opinion telling them there was no legal reason to keep the loophole. Later that year the board closed the loophole, requiring new projects on properties with antiquated permits to comply with the same standards and conditions that are applied to all other new oil development projects. But then the oil companies (mainly Aera Energy – owned by Exxon Mobil and Shell) spent more than $1 million hiring petition signature gath-

erers to force voters to decide whether to support what the board had just approved. This has resulted in Measures A and B on the June ballot. A “yes” vote is for applying the modern environmental standards approved by the board. A “no”vote is for going back to the old days when oil companies could escape environmental review and standards that protect air, water and public health, and which address climate change. Now, oil companies are spending an additional $5.5 million to scare voters into voting no. What are the environmental rules that oil companies are trying to avoid? One of the 2020 rules adopted by the supervisors requires distance buffers between new oil and gas wells and schools and homes. This rule was based on the evidence of the negative human health impacts from being too close to the fumes that are generated at well-drilling operations. Another 2020 rule prohibits the venting and flaring of natural gas found in drilling (except in cases of emergencies), instead requiring that any discovered

gas be put into pipelines for beneficial use or returned underground. Venting and flaring produce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and waste an important energy resource by burning it up without any benefit. Oil companies intend to buy their way out of having to comply with these and other rules. If a majority of voters vote “no” on Measures A and B, they will succeed, and we will pay the price with the resulting impacts to health and the environment. Oil companies are spreading lies and misinformation about the effects of approving Measures A and B. They say oil production would be shut down — not true. Ventura County Supervisors have made it clear that oil drilling in Ventura County continues to be allowed and encouraged, but with modern environmental safeguards. Oil companies say that thousands of jobs would be lost — not true. Measures A and B do nothing to stop local oil drilling or to cause job losses. They say that gasoline prices would rise if Measures A and B are

approved — not true. No one is stopping oil companies from drilling. In 2020, the supervisors told oil companies that they have permission to continue to drill for gas and oil here in Ventura County, but they also told them that in doing the drilling, they expect compliance with the common-sense environmental standards that are being applied in other jurisdictions across the state and the country. Now it is up to Ventura County voters to tell oil companies: YES, you can continue to drill for oil, but we expect you to comply with the reasonable environmental standards the Ventura County Board of Supervisors have already adopted. Ventura County voters must vote YES on Measures A and B. Phil White is a former Ventura County Planning Commissioner and Air Pollution Control District Director who now sits on the County Climate Emergency Council. He lives in Ojai.

Preserving a community treasure by Alex Wilson

W

rwilson@timespublications.com hen leaders of the Ventura Land Trust opened Harmon Canyon Preserve to the public in June 2020, it was just the diversion people needed at that point in the pandemic. Hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers flocked to the 2,123-acre nature preserve near Foothill and Kimball roads, including many who preferred indoor activities before COVID forced them to seek out safer ways to recreate. But while the preserve was officially open, social distancing requirements at the time made it impossible for the nonprofit to hold an official ribbon cutting ceremony. That changed on Friday, April 22 — Earth Day — when about 80 people gathered for a grand opening next to the preserve’s trailhead kiosk. The event, sponsored by the Ventura Chamber of Commerce, began with a blessing and songs from Julie Tumamait-Stenslie, Tribal Chair of the Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Chumash Mission Indians. “In this beautiful, beautiful place,

we’re here to celebrate Earth Day. But you know, for us, the Chumash people, Earth Day was every day,” she said. The event also served as a launch for the final phase of a $11.6 million capital campaign for Harmon Canyon Preserve. The final $1 million Ventura Land Trust leaders are seeking will fund an endowment for long-term stewardship and will also be used to build new trails and other amenities. Some money will also be spent on removal of non-native plants like wild mustard that are crowding out native species. Naming opportunities at the preserve are available. For $10,000, donors can get a “legacy” tree; $25,000 will put a plaque on a bench and for a $500,000 donation, the donor can name the preserve entrance. Currently the preserve attracts 65,000 visitors a year, who enjoy the 10 miles of trails that have been built so far. Access is free and the preserve is open dawn to dusk every day. The preserve also protects over 1,000 acres of coastal sage scrub, considered one of North America’s most endangered habi-

Trails and roads pass through seasonal streams and oak groves, and lookout spots feature views of the Channel Islands and surrounding mountains. Ventura Land Trust Board President Mark Watkins, Ventura’s former city manager, said during the ceremony that the efforts of volunteers and donors made the preserve a community treasure even before its official ribbon cutting. “This was a need in Ventura.

This is a promise kept by the Ventura Land Trust, and we couldn’t be more proud of what’s been going on here and what’s to come,” Watkins said. Ventura Mayor Sofia Rubalcava told the crowd the preserve has encouraged people to get outside. “People who maybe never saw themselves as potential hikers, or mountain bikers, or trail runners. It’s now allowing people to come and experience these great joys

. . . right in their backyard,” the mayor said. The mayor also praised efforts to make the preserve as inclusive as possible. “For communities that may have never felt invited or never felt like they belonged in a place like this, I really appreciate the efforts to include Spanish language translation on their signs. And I know that Harmon Canyon also offers Spanish-language tours.” In addition to the Harmon Canyon Preserve, the Ventura Land Trust also owns or manages three preserves near the Ventura River. The Big Rock Preserve covers 16 acres south of Foster Park and features diverse plants and animals including pond turtles and steelhead trout. The Willoughby Preserve is just under nine acres and protects land along the Ventura River Trail Bike Path near the 101 Freeway overpass. The nonprofit’s other property, the two-acre Hayden Preserve off Cañada Larga Road, is not currently open to the public. For Arbor Day’s 150th anniversary, visit a local botanic garden by David Goldstein

T

he 150th annual National Arbor Day is April 29, 2022. This holiday is nationally celebrated on the last Friday in April, but some states observe Arbor Day on different dates based on optimal tree planting times or state-specific historical events. One of the most aberrant is California, which designates March 7 as Arbor Day. During the week of National Arbor Day, the nonprofit National Arbor Day Foundation and Kimberly-Clark, a tissue manufacturer, have together committed to plant two trees for each Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook post with the hashtag #ArborDay. The organizations will plant up to 150,000 trees. A fundraising letter mailed to me by the foundation says Arbor Day is not just about planting trees; it is also about planting ideas. These ideas include valuing trees for providing clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and beauty to cherish. According to the Foundation, a key idea at the core of Arbor Day since its beginning in 1872 is personal responsibility for care of nature, including a

10 —

— April 28, 2022

duty to “respect it, replenish it, and protect it.” To value trees and plants in these ways, people must first learn about nature, and several gardens in Ventura County offer educational opportunities designed to help with this goal. Visiting the Ventura Botanical Gardens, Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, Taft Gardens in Ojai, or Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks during the week of National Arbor Day is a great way to increase this knowledge and appreciation. The Ventura Botanical Gardens, stretching downhill from Grant Park to Ventura City Hall, began in 2005 and lost many mature plantings in the 2017 Thomas Fire, so its specimens are young. What the site lacks in stately established plantings and shade, however, it more than makes up for with its impressive views. The panoramic view from nearly the entire site includes crashing waves on a wide coastline and extends to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands. The website of the Ventura Botanical Gardens commits the organization to “integrate opportunities for education . . . provide habitat for a… diversity of plants and animals . . . create

habitat corridors [and] . . . promote environmentally sustainable development.” This final goal provides a wide-ranging mandate. Derrick Wilson, President of the Ventura Botanical Gardens’ Board of Directors, pointed out the educational value of the organization’s new Native Volcanic Substrate Collection, replicating terrain in western Ventura County and including endangered plants found only in our county. Garden staff will collect plant specimens and seeds, keeping records of plants’ reactions to climate and soil conditions, providing insight on “how to utilize plants to conserve water in extreme drought.” The Volcanic Collection adds to the garden’s current display of native flora from the five Mediterranean climates of the world. Visitors can plan for conservation in their own gardens by learning from these examples of species tolerant of low water availability. Taft Gardens, near Lake Casitas, also features plants of Mediterranean climates, including an African section, a cactus garden and an area of native plants. Run by the Conservation Endowment Fund, Taft Gardens’

mission, according to its website, includes educating the public about “environmental heritage,” preserving endangered resources, and “exploring the relationship of humans to their environment.” Alexandra Nicklin, visitor coordinator and general manager, reports that Taft Gardens is seeking donations of signs to help with these goals by educating visitors on self-guided tours. Signs are a strong point of the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, at 400 West Gainsborough Road in Thousand Oaks. Signs along a nature trail, volunteer docents giving school tours, and tour/work combinations for adult education communicate a variety of environmental messages. Visitors see compost in various stages in a nursery that propagates native and Mediterranean climate plants, and these have been sold along with food plants and herbs during events in a Kids’ Adventure Garden area. Gardens of the World, across Thousand Oaks Boulevard from the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, focuses on a different type of education. The founders, the Hogan family, owned a travel agency and devoted the garden to cultural, rather

than botanical, education. Specializing in a fourth-grade curriculum, they use mission-style architecture, a series of outdoor murals with historical renderings of California’s mission system, and plants of the California missions to provide instruction for a regular procession of elementary school field trips. Plants of the missions include rosemary, aloe, guava, oranges, lemons and olives. Home gardens also offer opportunities to appreciate trees and other plantings, and an upcoming garden tour benefits an important organization. The 24th annual Camarillo Garden Tour, benefiting the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, will be May 1, from noon to 4 pm. For a $25 donation, visitors can tour five residential gardens. www.lmvna.org/gardentour www.gardensoftheworld.info www.venturabotanicalgardens.com conejogarden.org www.taftgardens.org Ventura County Public Works Environmental Resource Analyst David Goldstein can be reached at 805-6584312 or david.goldstein@ventura.org.

SushiWay has a festive atmosphere.

abriel Barajas has enjoyed a colorful career in the world of restaurants since he started selling hot dogs from a rolling cart outside a San Fernando Valley DMV office in 2009. He became a social media phenomenon as his TacosWay restaurants took off in Los Angeles. Barajas’ success even allowed him to recently open a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan. His latest creation is SushiWay, tempting diners with a fusion of sushi and Latin flavors in Downtown Oxnard

Fun with fusion

SushiWay is a spinoff from TacosWay, which now has six locations in Southern California as well as a Japanese outpost. In addition to traditional sushi dishes, the SushiWay menu also includes all the TacosWay favorites. But the fusion of the two cuisines is where things get really interesting. Fusion items include an appetizer called “Avocado Bomba,” a tempura dish mixing spicy tuna and salsa, “Sala De Mango” roll with salmon, shrimp, avocado, jalapeno and mango-chili salsa, and the popular lobster taquitos. Another Asian-influenced dish is “Carnitas Ramen,” with spinach, jalapenos and bean sprouts in a spicy pork miso broth, topped with a soft boiled egg and green onions. Barajas was born in the San Fernando Valley but lived in Mexico between the ages of 5 and 12. “I got to experience real Mexican food and every year I go back to Mexico at least three or four times, so I’m very familiar with all the Mexican flavors,” he said.

Social media spice

He didn’t always dream of owning restaurants, but started out in the food industry out of necessity.

“There was a huge recession, so I had to sell hot dogs outside of the DMV in Canoga Park,” Barajas recalled. “I realized during the recession that people were still buying food, so I realized I had to open a restaurant.” He bought an existing Mexican restaurant in Canoga Park and renamed it TacosWay, but at first struggled to attract many customers. That all changed when he launched an Instagram page with memes and funny videos related to food. “I created an alter-ego. I showed up in a gold chain and sunglasses and people started calling me ‘Mr. TacosWay,’” he said. In one video, Barajas is in Mexico talking about how he drives Range Rovers and Maseratis when he’s in L.A., and then the shot reveals him riding a tiny donkey. “It blew up on social media,” he said. “I created a buzz. So after I did the social media thing, people started going to my [Instagram] page, started going to my restaurant. It got to a point when it was super packed. And then I opened up my second restaurant, and automatically that one was already full.” According to Barajas, when he opened his third TacosWay, there was a three-hour wait to get in. During the grand opening for the fifth one, there were over 1,000 people waiting outside. “It was unbelievable, it was the highlight of my restaurant career,” Barajas said Today he has more than 461,000 followers on the TacosWay Instagram page and SushiWay already has more

A fusion of flavors at SushiWay. Photo courtesy Visit Oxnard

than 14,000 followers.

Sushi meets salsa

Barajas came up with the idea for SushiWay because he loved sushi but his parents were not fans, and always refused to go to sushi restaurants with him. “So I thought, how ‘bout we get a sushi place that sells Mexican food, too, so we can have a little bit of both? So that’s how SushiWay came about,” he said. “It seems like it’s been working and it’s a nice little niche to have.” He partnered with an established sushi chef who was a fan of TacosWay, Michael Cardenas, also known as “Sushi Mike.” “His whole life he’s been a sushi guy. He has multiple restaurants all around. He’s half Mexican-half Japanese. He knows his stuff,” Barajas said. “He has his flavors and I have my flavors, and we combine them together. And that’s how some of the rolls came about, from Mexican and

Japanese fusion.” The combination has been nearly as big a hit as his social media. “People like it. They like the combination of Mexican food and sushi. They really enjoy it. They’re catching on to it. Now my dad loves sushi. By taking him to a place that has both Mexican food and sushi, he went ahead and started trying sushi, and now he loves sushi,” Barajas said. SushiWay has a fun atmosphere, with outdoor patios and a hip yet luxurious vibe. The restaurant has a stage for DJs and a full bar specializing in micheladas. Barajas said he’s happy he chose Oxnard as the location for his first SushiWay. “I really love Oxnard. I love the whole downtown area, the whole oldtown feel. I wanted to bring something really nice to downtown. And it was a good fit for my brand. Thank God we’re doing good and people like it,” he said. April 28, 2022 —

rturo Garcia has served countless tacos at Cabo Seafood Grill and Cantina since opening the popular Oxnard restaurant 25 years ago. Some of his newest customers found his restaurant after it was included on the “Oxnard Taco Trail” created by Visit Oxnard, an organization working to attract tourists to the city. While fresh, locally sourced seafood dishes and guacamole prepared right at the table are

specialties of the restaurant, it’s one of his taco recipes that have also helped make a mark on Oxnard’s culinary scene, Garcia said. “My taco that we are famous for is our fried taco. It’s a blend of pork and ground beef with potatoes and spices. We fry it, and it’s really good,” Garcia said. Sitting on a festively decorated, sunny patio with mariachi music playing in the background, Garcia told the Ventura County Reporter what sets his tacos apart. “We do everything from scratch. We use the best ingredients. We don’t use microwaves or canned foods. Our recipes are my mom’s recipes. We are from Jalisco, Mexico. As you can see over there, they make tortillas right in front of you.” As for Garcia’s favorite thing about owning a restaurant? “I love taking care of customers. To me, when I see a customer go home happy, it makes me feel really good.”

re-pandemic, Grapes and Hops had it all: a dizzying array of fine wines (grapes), a decent selection of craft beers (hops), appropriate plates to go with them (cheese and charcuterie platters, hummus, some salads and sandwiches), a sizable footprint and a large, shaded patio that was the envy of neighboring restaurants. It was packed on weekends and weekday evenings alike, prized for

its casual ambience and live music (often of the acoustic variety). It struggled during COVID shutdowns (like every other business) but also took the time to reinvent itself. New owners Teri Formanek and Dave Parsonage made significant changes that have updated the space but also kept the things longtime patrons have loved. In truth, they’ve made it the best of both worlds, and have already become a local hangout since the grand opening in February.

Music-influenced makeover

“When we closed to do the rebrand, we had an introspec-

tive night. Who are we?” Parsonage explains. Parsonage had been good friends with the previous owner and a regular at Grapes and Hops. An accomplished musician, he was a regular on the wine bar’s stage, too. As passionate as he was about music, it seemed logical to embrace that idea. Everything fell into place after that. “That’s when all of this changed,” he says. He admits that it’s not a wild departure from what came before. It’s still casual and comfortable — the lighting is not too bright, the bench seating against the walls is

inviting and cozy, the dark, natural wood grain is comforting. I can honestly say that the moment I walked in, I felt more relaxed. But look around and you’ll notice the higher quality of the furnishings and fixtures. The old wine barrels, which once served as tables, are gone. A fresh coat of paint has zhuzhed up the place. Parsonage’s collection of instruments have been used to decorate the walls, along with framed album covers. Grapes and Hops was always a popular spot for live music, so Parsonage and Formanek have enhanced that aspect. A new and improved sound system and bet-

ter lighting make for a much better experience for performer and audience alike. With so many changes, a new name was in order. Parsonage and Formanek first hit on Grapes and Hops With a Twist — paying homage to the old while embracing the new — but it was a mouthful. Everyone started shortening it to “The Twist” and the name stuck. It was simple, indicative of the eatery’s new direction and, thanks to Chubby Checker, tied in beautifully with the music theme.

Grapes and hops — and grains

Formanek’s sophisticated sense of style brought other classy touches to

the Twist. She replaced old wood pallets with large, glorious mirrors (purchased for a song from a hotel surplus store) that make the space seem larger. The brand-new bar is a thing of beauty, too. And behind that bar — a full selection of liquors, mixers and spritzers. Yes, the “new” Grapes and Hops was no longer just grapes and hops. Formanek and Parsonage recognized early on that they were going to have to offer cocktails if they were going to continue, and so got their liquor license in July 2021. To go with the newly remodeled bar, they had a gathering of mixologist minds: four professional bartenders who came up with a craft cocktail menu that could stand up to the competition. And once again, they looked to music for inspiration. Empress Indigo Gin turns the classic French 75 into a violet-hued refresher called Purple Rain. Bittersweet Symphony is aptly named, with grapefruit, Aperol, sweet vermouth and cola. The beautifully balanced “Imagine,” named for the song by the great John Lennon, is a delicious, frothy blend of lemon, tequila, pomegranate and egg white. But the bar’s bestseller? “Dark Side of the Moon,” Parsonage states, proudly displaying a vivid

margarita made with blackberries and basil and elegantly garnished with a rim of black salt. Don’t miss this tart, fruity concoction! Fear not, wine and beer lovers. These sips may no longer be the headliners, but they’re still valued members of the beverage band. For beer, there are eight taps with a mix of styles — this is not an IPA-dominant list! — plus a dozen or so in the bottle, with hard seltzer, kombucha and cider available. For wine, think quality not quantity. Formanek notes that previously,

the restaurant was offering “700 kinds of wine with around 2,460 bottles. We had 45 vendors! Now we’ve paired it down to 22 bottles, which is manageable, and we kept the best ones, like Rombauer and Ojai Vineyard.” If you’re feeling hungry, the simple but satisfying fare will do the trick. Flatbread pizzas, delectable sandwiches (the tri-tip French dip is one of Formanek’s The Twist’s cheese plate comes with favorites), tapas platfresh fruit, pickled veg, nuts, bread and ters, charcuterie and crackers. SEARED YELLOWTAIL

Lots of flavors in one dish! A spinoff from Hozy’s Filet Trio, the Filet Trio Mix-Up is three individual, petite Angus filet mignons, each one offering a unique flavor experience. One sits on grilled asparagus, topped with bleu cheese crumbles, one sits on spinach, topped with a mushroom sauce and one sits on homemade mashed potatoes, topped with skinny onion rings. Compliment your meal with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or choose a bottle from our extensive list of wines.

Locally fished and expertly prepared by Chef Kelly, the Seared Yellowtail is served over arugula with preserved lemon caper aioli and grilled lemon, making this a great meal or an appetizer to share. We recommend pairing a crisp Spanish Albarino or Santa Barbara County 2021 Rosé, adding a cheese plate and finishing your meal with the Butterscotch Pot de Creme dessert. Pairing is Paradise Pantry’s Specialty.

f you’re heading to Yume Japanese Burger Cafe in picturesque Dowtown Ojai on a weekend, I recommend getting there shortly after it opens at 10:30 a.m. You’re more likely to have your choice of seating — one of the handful of window tables up front, with a view of Ojai Avenue, or something on the spacious, shady, dog-friendly patio, facing the Arcade Plaza. As

the clock nears 12 noon, crowds descend on this hip, popular spot. But that can be a benefit, too: The congenial atmosphere and friendly service encourage communion with your fellow patrons. On our outing, we were smitten with the friendly and very vocal Captain Jack the Black Pearl, a French bulldog who has become a regular, and is greeted by the servers with a bowl of water and a little bow. No matter when you arrive, however, you’ll need some time to browse the menu at your leisure: It’s a multi-page, visual, mouthwatering experience. That’s all part of what owner Takeshi Ozaki told me he aimed to do with his fusion burger joint. “Japan has a very strong food culture. Even if you go to the equivalent of a Denny’s, the menu has several pages and photos of everything.”

Living the dream

“Yume” means “dream” in Japanese, and one of Ozaki’s dreams, as explained on the restaurant’s website, was to “make a bridge between Japanese Culture and American culture through our food.” The burger is the quintessential American sandwich, and Ozaki has embraced that foundation while building upon it with Japanese flavors and presentation. All beef patties are made with fresh Wagyu beef, exceptionally tender and flavorful. It’s marinated for 24 hours in a delicious concoction that I can’t name, but found to be savory, rich and packed with that umami character. If all you had was a fork and a Yume patty, you’d be eating perfectly well. But of course, there’s more to a burger than the patty. And Ozaki has put together a number of masterpieces, adding toppings like sautéed mushrooms and onions, cabbage, teriyaki and Continued on Page 20

MOMIX’s Alice promises to be a surreal and dreamy spectacle by Madeline Nathaus

T

he internationally renowned dance-illusionist group MOMIX is coming to the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks on April 29 with their newest surrealist show Alice. “It’s a day for exploring one’s rabbit hole,” said Moses Pendleton, founder and artistic director of MOMIX. “I hope everybody is willing to take a little bit of a chance and make the plunge.” The show begins at 8 p.m. with tickets starting at $35, which can be bought online at bapacthousandoaks.com or at the venue before 2 p.m. “A MOMIX performance is always full of wonder and surprises,” said Colleen Debler, director of marketing at BAPAC. “Our goal is for the audience to sit back and enjoy the magic of dance.” Influenced by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland, MOMIX’s Alice draws on the themes of the story rather than on telling the story itself. Audience members can Go down the rabbit hole with MOMIX’s Alice.

expect to see dancers in white dresses, rabbit masks and rose costumes, but ultimately the experience is meant to evoke the surreal feeling of dreaming. “Almost like a dream itself, [the performance] has no rhyme or reason,” said Pendleton. “It doesn’t matter which way you go if you don’t really care about going anywhere — this kind of nonsense reality, very much in the spirit of Lewis Carroll.” MOMIX performances are known for manipulating images through light, costumes and props then moving them through time and space with choreography. In this show, the props and costumes are utilized in a way to generate illusions such as characters growing big and small. Simple props like latex fabric and exercise balls create fantastic creatures. Large

roses made of fabric on pipes generate the appearance that they are floating away. Alice is not Pendleton’s first experience with Carroll’s work as a guide. He choreographed a piece for his daughter’s ballerina recital when she was 5 or 6 years old called The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Some 25 years later, MOMIX was commissioned to do a show for the Pirelli Calendar’s Gala Dinner, where the theme of the event was Alice in Wonderland. “My work has always been linked with surrealism,” said Pendleton. “That event got us making and thinking about how to do some sort of MOMIX material on Alice.” Pendleton emphasized the importance of the visual medium in the book Alice in Wonderland and observed that it may not have made as much of an impact if it wasn’t for the illustrations included in the book. He also noted that his, and many others’, first experience with the story was seeing the psychedelic Disney movie adaptation. Pendleton said that imagery as a medium is important in the same way in dance. The audience’s experience of the show is mostly visual, another link between Carroll’s tale and MOMIX’s performance. He said he hopes this visual connection will summon a deeper mental connection. “We don’t want to have an audience watch someone have a dream,” said Pendleton. “We want the audience to dream 24 —

Some of his most notable work includes choreographing the 1980 Closing Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, and the 2014 Opening Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He’s also worked on music videos for Prince, Julian Lennon and Cathy Dennis, among others. His 1982 production Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC ARTS cable has won more than 10 international awards including a Sundance award and the CINE Golden Eagle. Pendleton started MOMIX over 40 years ago following the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic ceremonies. The group quickly grew to international notability for its inventive and unique styles. “The studio is my rabbit hole,” Pendleton said in a statement. “Every afternoon I disappear into a world

where shape and scale are constantly shifting and nothing, especially the human body, is what it seems.” Pendleton said he hopes his newest show will engage the audience both audibly, with its 21 pieces of music made to sound like one score, and visually, with its entrancing and mysterious imagery. “One of my favorite reactions is to hear the audience laughing. A lot of times it may be from surprise or the unexpected,” said Pendleton. “Sometimes it’s quite dark, so it’s also fun to see the collective audience straining to try to see what they think they should see, they’re not quite sure what they’re looking at.” ♦ MOMIX brings Alice to the stage on Friday, April 29, at 8 p.m. at the Fred Kavli Theatre of the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. For tickets and more information, call 805-449-2787 or visit bapacthousandoaks.com.

Javier Bátiz Mexico’s El Padre of Rock y Blues comes to Ventura by Mike Nelson

M

any successful musicians speak of their musical ability as a gift they’ve received from God. Some go so far as to call it a privilege. But for Javier Bátiz — now into his seventh decade of professional music-making — his ability to play his instrument as few have ever done represents something more. “I was born with a rare challenge,” says the Tijuana-born blues guitarist who will perform April 29 at NAMBA Performing Arts Space in Ventura. “The way I see it, God gave me the blessing, the privilege and the challenge not only to play this instrument, but to teach other people how to play guitar and other instruments — bass, piano, organ, drums. And in my life, I always have had an open door, so that’s what I do.” Which is why Bátiz, in addition to becoming a world-recognized performer, is also a world-recognized teacher-mentor of artists like Carlos Santana, Álex Lora, Abraham Laboriel and Guillermo Briseño (some of whom are among Mexico’s most popular musicians). “What I do is to preserve blues music, and teach it to younger people,” explains Bátiz, speaking by phone from Tijuana. “It’s about keeping this music alive and passing it along because, in Mexico, you don’t find many blues players.” That was certainly the case when Bátiz first began playing guitar at age 4. By age 13, he had founded Los TJs, becoming the first Mexican performer to play American rock and roll hits, and was already being heavily influenced by north-of-the-border R&B and blues artists — T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf and James Brown. It was a style he passed along to others, including a teenaged Santana. In the mid 1960s, the two young guitarists moved to the U.S. to pursue their musical careers, but Bátiz returned to Mexico, where he continued playing blues and teaching the sound and style to others — among them, a young drummer named Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra, who would go on to found the legendary band Canned Heat. “I met Javier around 1965 while I was playing at a funky place called El Sotano in Mexico City,” recalls de la Parra. “He had just arrived from Tijuana, and his style of playing was new to us in Mexico City. We were young teenage musicians mainly following the Top

40 in the U.S., and making translations of some of the most famous songs. But Javier came and introduced many of us to R&B and blues music. His guitar playing and singing was a lot heavier and more soulful than the styles we were playing, and he turned us on to it. We developed a good friendship and I spent countless nights at his apartment, listening to records by T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and many others.” This education allowed de la Parra to get out of the “pop world” and form Canned Heat, for whom he still plays. “They were blues experts and they wanted to play the music without any concern for popularity or money,” notes de la Parra, who will join Bátiz on stage at NAMBA. “Javier and I have been friends for more than 50 years now, and I’m delighted to be with him in Ventura County to help expose his great talent.” Likewise, Bátiz looks forward to playing with de la Parra, “something we haven’t done in, like, 20 years, man,” he says. “And I’m anxious for Fito to hear me play now, because I’ve gotten way better on guitar. I’m gonna turn 78 on June 3, but I have all my faculties — I sing, play, compose, record. And my reward is the applause from the people. I’m not looking for Grammys or any of that stuff. My approach is, get in touch with God, play what I feel, be true to who I am, and help people to get in touch with my music.” On April 29, Bátiz will have no “set list” when he steps on stage. “I’m more of the philosopher,” he says, chuckling. “When I get to the stage, I see how people react to the rhythms, I see the way they look at me, and I go from there. It’s like reading a mirror, you know? When I can play and people react to it, that’s the greatest thing.” ♦

Typhoons warning Royal Blood to perform at Ventura Music Hall on May 4 by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

T

christina@timespublications.com

here’s nothing simple about the English duo of vocalist/bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher, who create a whirlwind of sound as Royal Blood. But Kerr shared the basics of Royal Blood’s show that comes to the Ventura Music Hall on Wednesday, May 4. “If you’ve been to a rock ’n’ roll show, you know half of it,” Kerr said with a laugh. “Seriously, our new record, Typhoons, is nearly a year old but we haven’t really toured it. It’s been a long time since we played in the States. There’s a lot of new music and it’s an exciting setlist. There’s no time to go and use the restroom at our shows.” The shows are as commanding as the record. The 38-minute Typhoons kicks off with the wave of synthetic fuzz tone in “Trouble’s Coming.” “I think that track was the first song we had written that had that sound to it,” Kerr said. “It was a good segue because it’s bold as well. We’re

not pussy footing around. We’re fully committed to the sound of the record.” That said, Typhoons fits perfectly in Royal Blood’s catalog, according to Kerr. He contends fans and musicians are sometimes concerned about how old and new material will mesh. “I think those concerns might have some validity,” he added. “But once we started playing, we realized these songs were really heavy and have a raw energy that we bring to them when we play them live. It all works together. In fact, it gives our set real variety as well, which perhaps was missing before. “When we started piecing the set together, having the luxury of three albums, you get to have a stronger setlist by default. You end up playing the best songs.” Thatcher and Kerr formed Royal Blood in Brighton, England, and released their self-titled debut album in 2014. Playing the bass like a lead guitar, Kerr couples his visceral sound with Thatcher’s thunderous drums. The success followed with 2017’s How Did We Get So Dark?

Each of Royal Blood’s three studio albums has topped the U.K. charts, selling more than 3 million copies worldwide. Their accolades include a Brit award for Best British Group, awards from NME and Kerrang!, and a Mercury Prize nomination. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 21-20594-SPCA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
