Power to Speak

No on Measures A and B by Ben Oakley

P

hil White’s recent guest commentary is a prime example of the deceptive campaign to shut down local oil production under the guise of environmental protection represented by Measures A and B. (“Power to Speak: Yes on Measures A, B,” April 28, 2022, Ventura County Reporter.) According to White, Measures A and B are necessary to “apply modern environmental standards” while allowing and encouraging local oil drilling. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, Measures A and B give politicians new and unprecedented powers to shut down the local industry, threatening thousands of local jobs and millions in tax revenues while making us more reliant on foreign oil. Why? Because the controversial 2040 General Plan policies that restrict local oil production, which were narrowly approved

over the objection of two current county supervisors and hundreds of community leaders, result in a de facto ban on new local oil production. And Measures A and B are a power grab that will allow politicians to restrict activities required to sustain current production, including the redrilling or deepening of existing wells, or the ability to replace or upgrade existing facilities of any kind. White suggests that without Measures A and B, oil companies will somehow “escape environmental review and standards that protect air, water and public health.” Again, nothing could be further from the truth. Local oil is already produced under the highest environmental, health and social standards in the world as verified by a host of federal, state and local regulatory agencies including the Air Pollution Control District and Water Quality Control Board. Contrary to White’s statements, there

are no exceptions to these standards; every drop of oil produced in Ventura County is already subject to the same world class standards. Measures A and B, if passed, will increase our reliance on foreign oil produced in countries that do not share California’s environmental and social values. Increased foreign imports result in more ocean tankers to deliver the crude to California’s refineries. And increased reliance on imports makes us more vulnerable to foreign events, putting foreign leaders in control of our critical energy supply. White describes the restrictions on local oil production through Measures A and B as common sense and reasonable. But how much sense does it make to reduce our own local energy supply at a time when working families are already having trouble paying record high energy prices? Is it reasonable to restrict local production at the same time the U.S. is

making record withdrawals from our emergency petroleum reserve? Measures A and B are not reasonable, they are irresponsible, threatening thousands of local jobs and millions in tax revenue. Less tax revenue means cutting funding for vital public services resulting in slower fire response times and larger class sizes. Measures A and B will not result in less demand, they will drive energy prices even higher and make us more reliant on foreign oil. It’s better to produce local energy than increase imports as we move to renewable forms of energy. Stop the deceptive oil and gas shutdown; vote no on Measures A and B. Ben Oakley is a spokesperson for Stop Measures A & B, a coalition of Ventura County families, farmers, businesses and community organizations urging NO on Measures A and B.

42nd District Assembly Race

by Alex Wilson

entura County’s state assembly districts saw significant boundary changes during the recently completed redistricting process. The new maps are being used for the first time in the June 7 primary election, and will be in effect until they are redrawn again following the 2030 census. The 38th assembly district is currently represented by Democrat Steve Bennett who’s facing a challenge by Republican Cole Brocato and Daniel Wilson, who states no party preference. The 38th Assembly District no longer includes Santa Barbara like it did in the last election, but new areas of Ventura County including Oxnard have been added. The 38th district also includes Ventura, Port Hueneme, Ojai, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru and the northwestern portion of Camarillo. In the 42nd Assembly District, incumbent Democrat Jacqui Irwin is facing a challenge from two Republicans, Ted Nordblum and Lori Mills. The 42nd Assembly District shifted eastward in the redistricting process, losing Oxnard and Port Hueneme but gaining territory in Los Angeles County all the way to Pacific Palisades and Bel Air. The 42nd Assembly District also includes Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Westlake Village and the southeastern part of Camarillo. As with all of California’s June assembly races, the local contests are known as “jungle primaries” where the top two candidates go on to compete in the November general election regardless of political party affiliation.

38th District Assembly Race

In the race for the 38th Assembly District, Bennett is hoping voters will give him another vote of confidence after spending decades in office, first as a Ventura City Councilmember and then on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, prior to his 2020 election to the state assembly, representing District 37. Bennett’s challengers are each making their first bid for elected office. 6—

Daniel Wilson describes himself as a working class veteran and is a transgender person. Wilson grew up in Maryland and served in the U.S. Navy between 2009 and 2013, ending his military career as an aviation technician at Naval Base Ventura County, he said. He came out as a lesbian while in the military after the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was repealed, and since leaving the service, Wilson made the transition to identifying as male. Wilson and his wife live in Port Hueneme. He said that he held a variety of jobs in recent years at restaurants, cannabis dispensaries and other businesses. Advocating for higher wages and universal health care are some of Wilson’s main goals. Wilson said he would bring a new perspective to Sacramento if elected. “I have walked in many different worlds. I’ve been in a lot of these situations that failed us as people who don’t fit into the norm.” While he acknowledged that he appreciates some of the things Bennett has done while in office, Wilson believes many voters are hungry for change. “The status quo is not working for working people, and we need

fighters in office who are not afraid to take a stand. And you cannot do so when you are part of a political party.” Republican Cole Brocato calls himself a “true conservative” on his campaign website. Brocato lives in Oxnard where he and his wife are raising two kids with a third on the way. The couple owns a real estate and construction business together, buying homes to fix up and sell, he said. Brocato is focused on what he calls “kitchen table” issues in the race, such as inflation and taxes. He also wants to focus on education, as he believes many young families are leaving California for states with better schools as well as lower housing costs. Brocato said promises made by California’s elected leaders in recent years, including Bennett, have not been kept, and longs for a day when Democrats do not dominate state government. “What has it achieved? The schools have gotten worse, crime has gotten worse, housing has gotten less affordable and there is less of it. All these things that we’ve been promised would be fixed,” said Brocato.

Brocato also explained what he means by being a “true conservative”: “I just believe in fiscal conservatism. I think we need to be smarter about spending, I’ve got a young family and the debt that they’re inheriting is stifling. I’m a Christian, and I’m not ashamed of my Christian values.” Bennett said the most important issue facing voters is global warming, calling it an “existential threat,” which he added also relates to the state’s water needs. “We’re not in a drought,” said Bennett. “We’re in an actual period of aridization where . . . we will become a more arid area in Southern California. And we need to be proactive in terms of trying to address this.” He went on to say that he recently introduced bills addressing climate change and water scarcity. Bennett said he’s excited about serving in his relatively new role as a state legislator and is proud of his long record in local government. “The challenge is to actually come up with strategic steps that solve or address our problems. And I think that the voters should consider who has the experience to actually implement these things. I

The two Republican candidates challenging Democrat Jacqui Irwin for her seat representing the 42nd assembly district are both running for office for the first time, and portray Irwin as too liberal to represent the district. But Irwin said her record shows she’s charted a pragmatic course during her years serving in the state legislature and earlier on the Thousand Oaks City Council. “I think my record speaks for itself. I’ve passed a lot of bills in many different areas. Higher education, cyber security, recycling. I am a problem solver and I think that my record shows that,” Irwin said. Republican Ted Nordblum of Newbury Park said his opposition to abortion is one of the issues he cares most deeply about. Nordblum said he’s also concerned about some of the topics kids are being taught in public schools such as issues surrounding race, sexual orientation and what he calls “transgender indoctrination.” “We need to get rid of ethnic studies and start teaching civics and American history, and teach our kids just the basics,” he said. Nordblum said he’s been a successful entrepreneur since starting a medical device company in 2005, and would focus on making California more business friendly if elected. “I deal with different personalities. I fix things. I write every paycheck . . . There are just so many facets that I have done as a business person that I’ve learned from top to bottom how to manage, how to delegate, and how to work with people,” stated Nordblum. Republican Lori Mills of Simi Valley said that she has worked as a real estate agent focused on high end properties for 25 years, and that economic issues are part of the reason she’s running for assembly. “Honestly, I just think we need to lower taxes for our citizens,” Mills said. “I’ve watched tons of my clients leave the state because of the high cost of living. I personally would like to audit the state. I would like to know where the money is going and I want to find ways to cut costs of living for families.” jacquiirwin.com lorimills4stateassembly.com tednordblum.com

T

he Ventura County Board of Supervisors will have two new members later this year, since Linda Parks of Thousand Oaks was forced out of office by term limits and Bob Huber decided against seeking reelection to his Simi Valley-based district. The June 7 primary and possible runoff elections in November could have major political ramifications for the officially nonpartisan board. While Parks has been registered as both Republican and Democrat in the past, she’s best known for her pro-environment stances representing the second district. Democrat and longtime Thousand Oaks City Council Member Claudia Bill-de la Peña said environmental issues are a top priority, while Republican candidates Jeff Gorell and Tim McCarthy stress the need to help businesses succeed. The fourth district covering Simi Valley and Moorpark has been represented by Republicans for decades. But that could change if Democrat Bernardo Perez, a former Moorpark mayor and current Ventura County Community College District Trustee, wins election. Perez is facing off against current Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin, Dean Kunicki and Ed Abele (both from Simi Valley) — all of whom are Republicans. In both of the hotly contested supervisorial races, any candidate who receives over 50% of the vote June 7 will automatically win the election. If no candidate tops 50%, the top two candidates will face off in the November general election.

census provided an opening for Jeff Gorell to run for the second district seat, since he lives in an eastern portion of Camarillo that was previously in the third district. The Santa Rosa Valley was also moved from the third district to the second district in the recent redistricting. Gorell has spent years in the public eye, first as a Ventura County Deputy District Attorney, then as a state assembly member, and most recently as a deputy mayor of Los Angeles working on homeland security issues. Claudia Bill-de la Peña has served on the Thousand Oaks City Council for 20 years following a long career as a TV news producer. Ed McCarthy owns a security business and is making his first run at elected office. McCarthy said he became politically energized during the pandemic over his opposition to vaccine mandates and forced business closures, as well as anger over social unrest and the Black Lives Matter movement. Bill-de la Peña said protecting the environment will be a top priority if she’s elected. “We have much to lose if we don’t take care of climate change and the environment first and foremost. With-

out that, nothing else in Ventura County can really thrive, and that is the economy and the quality of life.” Gorell said creating jobs with good wages in a wide variety of industries would be a priority. “So that folks here who don’t have an advanced degree or a science degree can actually still, nevertheless, have a job, have a career, raise a family.” Bill-de la Peña and Gorell both said they have plans to deal with homelessness if elected. Bill-de la Peña said she backs getting a roof over the heads of unsheltered people as quickly as possible. She said she’s proud of actions taken when she was mayor last year to create an emergency housing project as well as a permanent supportive housing program. “That will make a dent in the way that we manage homelessness.” Gorell said he wants to put an end to people camping out in highly visible locations. “To take short term action to clear homeless encampments, and create an environment that will prevent homelessness from expanding. Every day that goes by, an additional person or two is added to our population of people experiencing homelessness, and it becomes more and more difficult.”

Janice Parvin

McCarthy said one of the main issues that motivated him to run is election integrity. “The public doesn’t have confidence in the election process. As a society we all need to feel comfortable that the election process is valid so that everybody wants to vote.” McCarthy also said anger over government actions during the pandemic inspired him to run. “That’s a huge issue for a ton of citizens that believe in the Constitution. That government has ignored the First Amendment. Here we are, having to show our vaccination status.” www.claudiabilldelapena.com jeffgorell.org www.mccarthyforvcsupervisor.com

VC District 4

The fourth supervisorial district did not undergo any radical changes during the redistricting process and still includes the cities of Simi Valley and Moorpark. Supervisor Huber’s decision to forgo a bid for reelection led four candidates to seek the position. Dean Kunicki is a property developer who serves as vice chairman of the Ventura County Taxpayers Association and was formerly a member of the Ventura County

Board of Education. He said supporting police is the top issue that motivated him to run. “Number one is public safety,” said Kunicki. “We are seeing a spike in our crime rate and one of my fears is that we need to be sure we provide the proper funding to the sheriff’s department.” Abele is a retired federal prosecutor and formerly served on the board of the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District. He said he wants to create a better business climate if elected. “We have been seeing middle and working class families leaving the county,” Abele explained. “We’ve been seeing local businesses leaving the county. Wealthy elites are moving from L.A. County to Ventura County and our quality of life is declining. And it’s all due to the fact that we have an overregulated government.” Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin said she’s a unifier and will work to build consensus if elected supervisor. She said that her top priority is public safety, citing a recent upswing in residential burglaries by crews from South America as well as catalytic converter thefts. “People are fearful. They want to see more law enforcement,” Parvin said. “And you know, Moorpark is the third safest city in all of California. But you can’t keep it safe unless you monitor how we’re doing. Do we need more officers? And if we do, where do we need them?” Perez said that he has been involved in Moorpark politics since moving there in the 1970s, even before Moorpark became a city in 1983, by getting involved in neighborhood councils. His civic involvement eventually led him to become a planning commissioner and serve 12 years on the city council, including a term as mayor. For the last 11 years Perez has served on the Ventura County College District board of trustees. Perez said he hopes to build on his past accomplishments if elected. “I helped produce affordable housing opportunities for working families, seniors, persons with developmental disabilities, farmworkers and other essential workers. I’ve helped create partnerships with local employers to put people in high demand, high paying jobs.” www.abele4supervisor.com www.dean4supervisor.com www.janiceparvin4supervisor.com www.bernardomperez.com

Pledge to bike instead of drive, win $250

A

mid encouraging signs that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, more businesses are re-opening and workers are returning to the office. If you’re among the employees returning to in-person work, even if only a few days a week, now is a great time to consider incorporating a bike into your work commute. May is Bike Month, and the Ventura County Transportation Commission is encouraging residents to leave their vehicles at home and ride a bike instead. During Bike Month, people who pledge to ride will be entered for a chance to win one of six $250 gift cards. You can make the pledge at VCTC’s website, goventura.org/ pledge. Participants must be over the age of 18, and pledges must be made by May 31. There are multiple opportunities to participate in Bike Month. During Bike to Work Week (May 16-20) and Bike to Work Day (May 20), consider riding a bike to work instead of driving. In Ventura County, about 1,717 people commute to work by bicycle, according to the 2020 American Community Survey. That figure, about 0.4 percent of the county’s commuters, is in line with other counties in Southern California, according to the survey. If your work commute is too far for bicycling, consider pairing a bike ride with a bus or train trip. Most Southern California transit operators offer on-board storage compartments for bicycles as well as bike racks and locking facilities at stops and stations. VCTC Intercity service allows electric bikes (e-bikes) in bike racks if they do not have wet-cell batteries. Rules may vary, so it’s best to check with individual operators about bringing

bikes on board. Swapping a vehicle for a bike is a simple way to help the environment by reducing traffic congestion and cutting air pollution. Biking instead of driving can also be a way to save a little money. The price of regular unleaded gasoline is about $5.80 per gallon in Ventura County, according to AAA, so riding a bike instead of driving can mean keeping a few more dollars in your pocket.

“There’s a hole in the music community” Local musicians remember jazz guitarist and pianist Hans Ottsen (1976-2022)

T

by Alex Wilson rwilson@timespublications.com here’s a reason it’s called the Gratitude Jazz Jam. Great jazz musicians grace the stage at The Grape each Tuesday night, welcoming less experienced players who are grateful to find support and musical inspiration. Ever since Ventura County’s premier jazz club started rolling under the name Squashed Grapes at a smaller Midtown Ventura location in 2010, guitar virtuoso

Hans Ottsen has been a mainstay of the weekly jam session. April 26, 2022 would be the last time his elegantly flowing solos would be heard. The following Tuesday, the crowd at The Grape was twice the usual size. Word had spread that Ottsen, 45, passed away April 30 as a result of mental health issues that, according to his loving family, he had dealt with for many years. While there was a sense of sadness in the air, the soaring high notes and appreciative applause after every solo made it feel as though Ottsen’s presence was still there at times.

“An amazing player, and such a good soul”

Drummer Manon Franklin of Oxnard met Ottsen at a music jam about 10 years ago and performed during the May 3 tribute. “When I first saw him play, man, I thought he was amazing. An amazing player, and such a good soul,” Franklin said. While most of Franklin’s drumming experience is from playing gospel and pop music, Ottsen nurtured Franklin’s growth in the rarified and infinitely complex world of jazz. “He would lead me and guide me. I’d watch him for cues and he helped me along the way on my jazz journey,” Franklin said. “He was just one of those people you could talk to and he had such knowledge about not just music, but life and everything. It was such an honor to play with him.” Ottsen’s playing revealed the person he was and the beauty of his heart, Franklin added. “That love, that sense of caring, all

He was truly expressing himself and it was lovely to witness.” Even more than honoring Ottsen as a musician, Franklin was compelled to play in the tribute because of the person Ottsen was. “He made me feel really loved,” Franklin said. “You felt the love from him. Every time you’d go to leave or greet each other, he’d give a good, solid hug. And he wasn’t afraid to say ‘I love you,’ and I loved that.”

“It was always gratitude of the community and the comradery”

Josh McNutt is a co-owner with Adam Randall of The Grape, which opened at its current location at

2733 East Main Street last October, a few blocks east of the original Ventura venue, which had become too small for the growing audience. The business made an earlier move to an industrial area on Ventura’s Market Street that ended in 2020 when nightclubs were shut down by the pandemic. McNutt said Ottsen had been instrumental in the nightclub’s musical success since the beginning. “He started the jazz jam as being just a community of musicians that would all come to play together, meet new people, collaborate together. No pressure. You don’t need to be a professional to show up,” McNutt said. “It’s irreplaceable, what he brought to these jazz jams.”

McNutt was happy so many people turned out to honor Ottsen. “I’m extremely grateful that as many people showed up as they did. And this goes back to Hans naming the jazz jam as the Gratitude Jazz Jam. It was always gratitude of the community and the comradery, and everything that was taking place on the stage,” McNutt said. “There’s a lot of people in here who are really hurting right now. And to see the kind of outpouring of people in this room that are offering support is tremendous.” Ottsen was surrounded by music from the time he was born because his mother is an opera singer and music teacher, according to an obituary written by his family. Ottsen studied jazz at USC and the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. While Ottsen was in New York he also volunteered to provide therapy music to cancer patients as they emerged from surgery.

“Just this vibrant personality”

of Dynamite, and sometimes jammed with Ottsen. The leader of a band Ottsen performed with asked Jensen to take pictures of all the members individually to help promote upcoming shows. Jensen said the shots of Ottsen were fantastic because the guitar player’s personality shone through. “Because he’s just a beautiful person. I don’t ever really direct people that much. I just kind of catch whatever’s there,” Jensen said. “With Hans, his soul came out.” Aaron Winters played drums in a band with Ottsen and became a close friend. Ottsen also gave piano lessons to Winters’ two daughters. “He actually was a great piano player, too. He knew theory like the back of his hand and he had this really unique way of distilling complex things into these simple terms that could connect and make jazz look, I wouldn’t say easy, but accessible. And so my kids loved him because he was fun,” Winters said. “He was just this vibrant personality. He was always laughing and really animated. He was not stoic like, ‘Here’s your scales.’ He was like ‘What’s your favorite song on the radio.’” Winters said he and Ottsen had lots of fun times together, but Winters also knew about hard times when Ottsen went through periods of deep depression. Winters said Ottsen acknowledged his mental

health issues and received treatment. “I don’t think he was in denial about much in his life. I think he really wanted things to be easier at times, but I also think he just recognized that with great genius comes some suffering and some kind of chaos, and that’s just the lot that he was given,” Winters said. The loss to his family, friends and fellow musicians is incalculable, Winters said. “It’s tragic. He’s too young. He was an incredible musician, and an incredible teacher. Just a really great heart. And there’s just a gap. There’s a hole in the music community, certainly in the jazz community here in Ventura with his passing, without a doubt. Look at all the people here that he’s impacted. To lose a talent like that, it hurts man, it just hurts.” ♦ Ottsen’s family has planned a celebration of life at Ventura’s First United Methodist Church, the church he attended growing up. It’s set for Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. and everyone is invited. An invitation-only jam session will follow at The Grape at 5 p.m. that will feature some of Ottsen’s own compositions and favorite songs. Invitations will be handed out at the church. Ottsen’s family has also created a scholarship fund to provide instruments and lessons to music students. Donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/f/hans-ottsenmusic-scholarship-fund. Spidey swings by Ventura to be featured on exclusive, limited edition cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #900 by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

e’s New York’s friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man, but the heroic web slinger took a break from crime fighting to visit the West Coast and spin some derring-do of a different kind. Yes, Spidey heeded the call of the Central Coast to star in a promotional cover for local comic book store Arsenal Comics and Games. How very Hollywood (or Hollywood adjacent, at least). The cover, which was revealed on Arsenal Comics’ social media channels on May 4, just a few days before Free Comic Book Day on May 7, features Spider-Man swinging next to the blue gum eucalyptus that remains on the ridge above Barlow Canyon — the hilltop long known as Two Trees in Ventura — with the Ventura Pier visible in the background. But he’s not alone.

Arsenal Comics and Games owner Timmy Heague (left) is joined by Spider-Man cosplayer Peter Norton in front of the Ventura location on Telegraph Road. Photo by Catlin Smith Extraterrestrial tree-like sentient Groot is there, too, as a physical embodiment of the spirit of the second eucalyptus that gave the local landmark its name, despite being felled by gale-force winds in October 2017. “Two Trees lives thanks to Groot,” explains Timmy Heague, owner of Arsenal Comics.

Swinging into history Spider-Man was created 60 years ago for Marvel Comics by the legendary Stan Lee (1922-2018) and Steve Ditko (1927-2018) during a time known as the Silver Age of Comic Books. Through countless publications, television shows and cinematic films, Peter Parker’s spider-enhanced, wise-cracking alter ego has swung across the world as we know it, as well as time and space (as in the wonderful and popular 2018 animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). For most of his existence, Groot’s popularity paled in comparison to that of Spidey, but he actually predates the web slinger. Lee created Groot in 1960 with Jack Kirby (yet another comic legend) and Larry Lieber, and the characThis exclusive cover for The Amazing Spider-Man ter first appeared as a #900 was designed by Marvel comic book artist hostile alien invader. memorable, scene-stealing and, at times, adorable sidekick to Rocket Raccoon in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy — the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This limited edition cover is the first visit to Ventura for both superheroes. Extremely successful exclusives It’s not unusual for any comic book edition to have variant covers, and some are more popular or rare (and expensive) than others. But in this case, the Ventura-centric #900 cover, which will be released on July 6, is exclusive to Arsenal Comics. A total of 6,000 will be printed — 4,000 featuring the Marvel logo and cover text, 2,000 “virgin” editions featuring only the cover artwork. Some are signed by the artist and framed. All are currently available for pre-order, in a variety of options and price points, starting at $19.99 at arsenalcomicsgames.bigcartel.com/products. Around 25% of have already been sold, and Heague expects all 6,000 issues to sell out before their release date. The Amazing Spider-Man is owned, published and controlled by Marvel, and this limited edition #900 cover was generated by the company, with the final design created by comic book artist Todd Nauck. (Fun fact: Nauck also famously designed the cover for The Amazing Spider-Man #583 in 2009, featuring newly elected President Barack Obama.) But the idea originally came from Heague himself. “It’s my idea and concept. Arsenal is the only store that will have it. I wanted something to support Free Comic Book Day,” he says, adding that he came up with the “sketch,

layouts, reference photos of Two Trees and the pier, then gave it all to Marvel . . . It’s the result of about 150 email exchanges with Marvel.” According to Heague, limited edition, exclusive covers such as these

work and ultimately handles design in house. But the printing costs are borne by the retailer. “It’s a sizable investment,” Heague confirms. “you have to have a hit for it to make [financial] sense.” The Amazing Spider-Man #900 isn’t Arsenal’s first foray into exclusive cover territory. “This will by my third,” says Heague. “I’ve got three more lined up for 2022.” Other exclusive or shared exclusive covers carried by Arsenal feature the Incredible Hulk and Wolverine (by artist Larry Houston), Hawkeye with a dog (by Kate Bishop, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Camarillo Animal Shelter) and the Green Hornet. There’s also a special edition of AfterShock Comics’ Maniac of New York: The Bronx is Burning #3, with a cover designed by Ventura artist Ryan Carr. It’s not cheap or easy to have an exclusive cover printed. Has it been successful? “Extremely,” Heague states emphatically. “And [Spider-Man] is my best exclusive so far.” “Comics are for everybody” Ventura-native Heague was just 22 when he opened Arsenal Comics and Games in Newbury Park in 2014. In 2018 he added a second location in midtown Ventura, on Telegraph Road across the street from Ventura Transit Center. While many businesses have struggled the past two years, Heague says that “by the end of 2020, it was my busiest year.” This despite a break-in during the first few weeks of the pandemic. “I take pride in my resilience.” “It’s been a dream to open up and thrive in Ventura,” he continues. “I appreciate the lovely

weather outside and what a beautiful town we live in.” The hill still known as Two Trees is visible from his shop. A photo he took of the hillside one day at work inspired the exclusive Spider-Man cover. “Spider-Man is my favorite comic book hero,” says Heague. “I had to put Spider-Man with the Two Trees, which I can see from my store. But wait — we lost one of the trees! And I hit on Groot as my second tree for Two Trees.” Ventura Pier was added later, to further celebrate his hometown. Comic book fans and collectors account for many of Arsenal’s exclusive cover sales, but Heague also hopes to appeal to the non-traditional customer. “Comics are for everybody,” he states. “I want everyone of every age and demographic to be reading and collecting comics.” And with the The Amazing Spider-Man #900, “I wanted to create something that would be a comic purchase for people who never picked up a comic before.” Heague continues, “It’s been really exciting to feature my home town while honoring one of my favorite superheroes.” ♦ Amazing Spider-Man #900 with the Ventura cover is available exclusively at Arsenal Comics and Games, 1610-1 Newbury Road, Newbury Park, 805-499-6197; and 3431 Telegraph Road, Ventura, 805-620-0543. L

ike many musician-performers, Moorea Masa was deeply affected more than two years ago by the impact of COVID19. Planned tour dates and festival appearances were postponed or canceled, the release of her new record was delayed and life as she knew it was essentially halted. O.K., not halted — re-directed. “I had an interesting journey,” smiles the native Oregonian singer-composer-guitarist who will appear May 15 at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks. “Touring was my main source of income, and when that went away it was time to adjust. And at the beginning of COVID, unlike a lot of artists, I wasn’t feeling creative; it was more, ‘How are the people around me doing? Are we safe?’ I have a hard time creating from stress; I do it better when I’m more relaxed and free.” But it wasn’t just about the music, either. “The revolution happened and I thought, ‘I can’t release music right now, I have to be involved in the community.’” A young woman of mixed-race heritage, Masa joined protests supporting Black Lives Matter, helped raise local awareness of mental health issues, and became a voice for the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) community, seeking to educate the non-BIPOC community on the differences not just in skin tones but in life experiences faced by people like herself.

Moorea Masa and The Mood will bring “stripped-down” R&B to T.O.

“It’s about building bridges and uplifting others,” she says. Not that her artistic side shut down entirely. With a group of friends in her hometown of Portland (“My pod,” she laughs), she created art to go with music videos that she released over the past year. “That became my outlet, creating art around the record,” she says. “And it was wonderful to combine forces with some really creative women. Now, little by little, tours are picking up, and I’m making a new record now.” That music — a unique and engaging blend of “strippeddown” R&B, soul, jazz and folk — will be heard when Masa and her band The Mood perform on Sunday. As one who was singing “as soon as I could talk,” Masa enjoys being able to combine a variety of influences in her music. “It’s not like I’m going for a particular genre when I create,” explains Masa. “It comes out as it comes out. I may like a certain groove, or I may want to say something in particular. And I have strong influences, too; lately I’ve been very influenced by British singer Cleo Sol.” That creativity has been nourished by Masa’s relocation to Leimert Park on the west side of Los Angeles — “a great neighborhood that really feels like a community” — with her partner and fellow musician Steve Watkins. “Swatkins” is among those who participate in her recently released album, Heart in the Wild: Side A.

The album — with songs including “Lion,” “Butterfly” and “Until Then” — encompasses intimate and emotional themes that explore Masa’s relationship with her estranged mother, her desire to protect women and other marginalized people, and her belief in loving someone no matter if they’re able to truly love you back. “There are so many different things I love about music,” she says. “It is a universal language, a way to connect with people of different backgrounds all over the world and bring them together. Yes, music is a creative outlet, but it’s also a way to process and express emotions and feelings when you don’t know how to do it any other way. And through that, maybe I can help others who may be feeling some of the same things.” Does she hope these themes will resonate with those who hear her on May 15? “I hope those who come to the concert will take whatever they need from it,” she says, smiling. “I don’t want to tell them how to feel; I just want to provide an escape, some joy, a good time, and maybe even a safe space for anyone who wants to come and be there. A healing, safe space.” ♦

affles aren’t just for breakfast anymore, and thanks to Don Waffly, you don’t need a knife and fork, either . . . although a handful of napkins is probably a good idea. One of the newer additions to the Annex Food Hall at the Collection at RiverPark, Don Waffly is a locally owned eatery specializing in waffles on a stick. These long, rectangular confections are dipped, drizzled and sprinkled in a variety of ways to create a super-sweet yet hard-to-resist dessert. Particularly good when they are still warm from the waffle iron. At just $6 a pop and almost guaran-

teed to be a crowd pleaser, I decided to get a variety to share with the family. Which is how I found myself carting out a three boxes full of candy-colored deliciousness to sample. Six waffle stick combinations are available, or you can get one plain or build your own. Chocolate, nuts and condensed milk feature heavily. The Don Classic is a simple affair with a milk chocolate coating sprinkled with crushed almonds and drizzled with condensed milk. Strawberry-flavored white chocolate makes the pretty-inpink Ox Berry (with Fruity Pebbles) and Coco Berry (coconut). White chocolate and Oreo crumbles go onto the aptly named Cookies and Cream, while the Crunchy Churro features a divine chocolate-and-spice mix of hazelnut chocolate, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and cajeta (a type of caramel). My personal favorite was the Nutty Nutty, drizzled with Nutella and hazelnut-flavored white chocolate and sprinkled with crushed almonds. Adding to the fun and anticipation: You can watch the chefs at work while you wait for your order. Mine poured

batter into a waffle iron, pulled it out when it was beautifully golden brown, and used a pair of sheers to carefully cut it into shape. Then the dipping began, with short pauses between each step to allow each layer to set. The warm waffle still meant the entire concoction was a bit gooey but, boy, were they pretty and so tempting. A few words of wisdom, if you’re

interested. The waffles will lose their crispness after a while, so even though they travel well, it’s best to eat them sooner rather than later. They are messy . . . a delicious mess, but keep lots of napkins handy. And you’ll want to really be in the mood for something sweet; the combinations are great, but it’s a massive sugar overload. Having said all that . . . Don

Waffly’s treats were festive, fun and flavorful — and a novel take on dessert. Kids will love these, and anyone who prefers something savory can order from the egg sandwich menu (untried by me, but if the Instagram photos are accurate, they are probably fantastic as well). Better yet: Get both, so you can have your eggs and eat your waffles, too.

ation date in item 4 on page 1. Arrest Required if Order Is Violated If an officer has probable cause to believe that the restrained person had notice of the order and has disobeyed the order, the officer must arrest the restrained person. (Pen. Code, §§ 836(c)(1), 13701(b).) A violation of the order may be a violation of Penal Code section 166 or 273.6. Agencies are encouraged to enter violation messages into CARPOS. Notice/Proof of Service The law enforcement agency must first determine if the restrained person had notice of the order. Consider the restrained person "served" (given notice) if (Pen. Code, §836(c)(2)): • The officer sees a copy of the Proof of Service or confirms that the Proof of Service is on file; or • The restrained person was informed of the order by an officer. An officer can obtain information about the contents of the order and proof of service in CARPOS. If proof of service on the restrained person cannot be verified, the agency must advise the restrained person of the terms of the order and then enforce it. If the Protected Person Contacts the Restrained Person Even if the protected person invites or consents to contact the restrained person, this order remains in effect and must be enforced. The protected person cannot be arrested for inviting or consenting to contact with the restrained person. The order can be changed only by another court order. (Pen. Code, §13710(b).) Conflicting Orders - Priorities for Enforcement If more than one restraining order has been issued, the orders must be enforced according to the following priorities 1. EPO: If one of the orders is an Emergency Protective Order (form EPO001) and is more restrictive than other restraining or protective orders, it has precedence in enforcement over all other orders. 2. No Contact Order: If there is no EPO, a no-contact order that is included in a restraining or protective order has precedence over any other restraining or protective order. 3. Criminal Order: If none of the orders includes a no contact order, a domestic violence protective order issued in a criminal case takes precedence in enforcement over any conflicting civil court order. Any nonconflicting terms of the civil restraining order remain in effect and enforceable. 4. Family, Juvenile, or Civil Order: If more than one family, juvenile, or other civil restraining or protective order has been issued, the one that was issued last must be enforced. Clerk's Certificate I certify that this Temporary Restraining Order is a true and correct copy of the original on file in the court. Date: December 14, 2021 Sherri R.
