Power to Speak
Port of Hueneme needs to play a role in creating a better future by Chris Sellgren
T
his summer, the Oxnard Planning Commission is expected to vote on the future of the last undeveloped plot of land in the city, a 34-acre coastal access point that the Port of Hueneme hopes to turn into a massive parking lot for luxury cars. Despite continual pushback from local residents, community organizations and environmentalists, the Port of Hueneme has plowed forward with their profit-driven plans, and even more insidiously, they’ve spun a campaign of misinformation and deception to justify the entire ordeal. This corporate expansion project has been lurking for years, and with critical decision points just around the corner, the port needs to take accountability for their role in creating a better future for this community. During the most recent stage of review, the city hosted a pub-
lic workshop inviting the port to answer questions and concerns of the community. Instead of using the opportunity to speak honestly with Oxnard residents about the project and its goals, the port opted for crafty rhetoric that brought a lot of confusion and few real answers. For instance, residents have consistently questioned the future of the site after the three-to-five-year permit expires. The port continues to hold that the project is temporary, but there are major holes in its story. Internal port documents reveal detailed plans for the construction of a much larger, 250acre “logistics park” nearby. The currently proposed site is simply a stepping stone for a set of larger expansion projects, yet neither the port nor the 1,000-page Environmental Impact Report (full of many other critical flaws) even mention the 250-acre site. Claiming that the 34-acre project is temporary obscures the truth: the Port of Huen-
eme is attempting to piecemeal other massive, long-term expansion plans along with the project, which demonstrates an unacceptable lack of transparency and a flat-out violation of environmental law. Even worse than the dishonesty around the project’s future is the dishonesty around its impact on environmental and community health. The port claims that the parking lot is environmentally friendly because it will store some electric cars. Yet they conveniently fail to mention how these cars will be picked up from the site by heavy-duty trucks that spew toxic nitrogen oxides and diesel particulate matter into South Oxnard’s air. These pollutants have been linked to harmful health impacts like asthma, cancer and heart disease so extensively that regions facing extreme levels of pollution are given the label “diesel death zone.” It’s no coincidence that some of the most vulnerable working-class and
immigrant communities in Ventura County are the targets for industrial projects that are actively transforming beautiful, coastal neighborhoods into diesel death zones. It doesn’t matter if this new parking lot will be full of Toyotas or Teslas; They’re both part of a project that will block beautiful beach access, threaten multiple endangered species, clog residential roads with dangerously heavy traffic, and pollute Oxnard’s air at the expense of its people. The Port of Hueneme seems to believe that this pollution is an inevitable side effect of the American economy. But freight transportation doesn’t have to poison our planet, and relying on fossil fuels isn’t sustainable for the port or our planet. Other leaders in California seem to be getting it: The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have committed to transitioning towards zero-emissions operations by 2035 and the Port of San Diego has
committed to making the transition by 2030. We are entering the era of electrification, and the Port of Hueneme needs to catch up. By bringing jobs and economic growth, the Port of Hueneme has proven an indispensable resource to Ventura County. But this activity cannot come at the expense of the health of our families or our planet. The port says that Ventura County deserves an “equitable, clean energy future.” It’s time they step up to the plate and help make this vision a reality — not with shifty expansion projects veiled with false promises and greenwashed rhetoric, but with concrete plans for a zero-emission future. Chris Sellgren works in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an environmental activist concerned about industrial pollution in Ventura County.

Eviction restriction Ventura’s stronger renter protections won’t apply to Casa del Pueblo by Alex Wilson

entura residents facing eviction from apartments slated for renovation have new protections approved by the city council. But the May 23 vote will not apply retroactively to residents of a Westside complex who brought the issue to the council’s attention.
The 12-unit Casa del Pueblo apartment complex on Center Street was recently purchased by new owners, and city officials said the tenants received eviction notices on April 5. Affected tenants have spoken out at recent city council meetings about their plight of losing an affordable place to live and the difficulty of finding similarly priced apartments in Ventura. The impacted tenants garnered support from several community organizations including Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy, known as CAUSE, which works on social, economic and

environmental justice issues for working-class and immigrant communities, according to the website. State law allows property owners to evict tenants and raise rents for future tenants if major renovations are planned. City officials said the new owners stated they intend to perform a substantial remodel, but no permits were approved for the work prior to the eviction notices. The ordinance passed by the council will require property owners to obtain permits prior to eviction notices going out, and also mandates two months of relocation assistance for tenants instead of the one month mandated by state law. Ventura Mayor Sofia Rubalcava said rising rents statewide have led some unscrupulous landlords to kick out tenants and raise rents for future tenants, even if major renovations lasting more than 30 days are not performed, as state law requires. State law generally allows rent increases of about 10% annually, she said, but market forces are causing rents to rise much more for new tenants of buildings that have been renovated. “It seems like some owners were taking advantage of that loophole to go ahead and evict tenants by telling them that they were going to remodel and it was going to take more than 30
Supporters of new renter protections at the May 23 council meeting. Photo courtesy of CAUSE days. But then come to find out, for many of these buildings, they didn’t actually do substantial renovations. That’s what we’re trying to prevent with this ordinance,” the mayor said. Rubalcava said she’s seen no evidence to show the new owners of Casa del Pueblo plan to raise rents without performing major renovations, but hopes the new ordinance prevents that from happening at other complexes in Ventura. “We hope that they actually do go forward to the renovations. It wasn’t necessarily about the owners of this particular building. We’ve just seen a trend in the state of California that this happens quite a bit,” she said. “What
we’re trying to prevent is people being evicted without just cause.” Even though the residents of Casa del Pueblo will still face eviction under the city’s new policy, the mayor said she is glad that the residents’ advocacy helped bring the issue to greater light. “I’m just really glad the tenants really found the courage to come and speak to us and inform us about the situation. The first thing is creating awareness. If people don’t know that this is happening then we can’t do anything about it.” Additional protections for renters will be considered next year, RubalContinued on Page 9

entura resident Diantha Kelly helped make history on June 2 when her neighborhood held the city’s first police-sponsored neighborhood watch meeting in about 20 years. Kelly lives in a neighborhood known as “The Farm” near Telegraph Road and Saticoy Avenue, and it certainly feels safe. Homes have a contemporary yet retro look and are close together, encouraging community members to get to know each other. “We love this neighborhood and we want to keep it as safe as possible,” Kelly said about her neighborhood, which was built about four years ago. But she and her neighbors have heard crime is on the rise in Ventura, and an upswing in thefts from cars is 6—

crime before it happens is most effective when there’s a partnership between police and residents. “Crime prevention is all of our duty and responsibility, and if we work together we can accomplish more.” Davis explained how the department deploys officers across the city and what kinds of crimes get the fastest response. For example, people actively fighting will get immediate attention while a homeless person asleep on a sidewalk or an abandoned car could take longer to respond to, she said. She noted that police can’t be
Residents as “eyes and ears” of the police
Ventura Police officials are relaunching the city’s neighborhood watch program after it faded away about two decades ago. The program was a victim of budget cuts and also a move towards organizing communities through the social media site Nex-
tdoor, which officials believe has lost some of its effectiveness. Police and neighbors were in agreement that a shift toward meeting in-person could be a better crime prevention strategy than communicating online. Residents were joined at the meeting by veteran Ventura Police Cpl. Alina Davis and Officer Kaylyne Brittle, who recently joined the force. Davis covered several topics during her talk, held in a small neighborhood park over coffee and cookies. She said the main message she wanted to impart is that stopping

At the end of the meeting, Davis said she was pleased with the turnout and the questions asked by residents. “I think it was great. It’s nice to see people come together over a common goal and see people involved in the community.” She’s hopeful the group will keep holding neighborhood watch meetings. “I’d like to see them stay togethContinued on Page 10

In Brief Water rate hikes in Ventura Ventura residents can expect to see higher water and wastewater bills starting July 1. A city study showed average annual rate hikes of 7% for water service and 6% for wastewater service are necessary, officials said. The increases will help support daily operations as well as three dozen capital improvement projects, including a long-planned connection to the state water system. According to Ventura Water General Manager Gina Dorrington, drought, state regulations and legal constraints have all contributed to the impact on the city’s water supply. “Now is the time to continue to invest in our aging infrastructure and projects that will help meet regulatory requirements, help secure sustainable water supply for existing and future customers and improve our water quality,” Dorrington said. The five-year plan for water and wastewater rate increases was approved by the Ventura City Council on May 17. According to a May 24 decision made by the CSU Board of Trustees, University Hall will be renamed Richard R. Rush Hall. Rush served as president starting in 2001 and retired in 2016, university officials said. “The accomplishments during his tenure were significant, which included establishing an array of public partners that helped to raise nearly $49 million in contributions to support student scholarships and help launch programs to better serve regional needs,” trustee Douglas Faigin said. “As the founding president, he established the vision and direction of the campus with a clearly stated focus on students and their success.” — Alex Wilson

In this economy, in this housing crisis, that just isn’t enough.” While he was not completely satisfied with the city council’s action, Nunez said he’s happy with the pledge that city leaders will revisit the issue next year. “This at least helps us start a foundation for hopefully stronger tenant protections. This is now on the city council’s radar, so hopefully in the future we can advocate for stronger protections.”

er and stay committed to a common goal, which is to prevent crime in their neighborhood and make sure they have a safe place to live and a safe pace for the kids to grow up. I’m just grateful that we’re doing something new and trying something different to bridge that community gap again.”
Fostering police-community connection
The meeting was hosted by Ventura City Councilmember Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios, whose district encompasses The Farm neighborhood. Part of her goal was to combat the negative image many people have of police, especially in recent years. “More than anything, I wanted to have that communication and that connection with our officers. Because a lot of times there can be that negative connotation and relationship and I really just want to turn that around,” the councilmember said. “So I feel proud and honored that we pulled this together.” Police Chief Darin Schindler made relaunching the neighborhood watch program a department priority, but did not attend the meeting himself because he wanted it to be more about the neighbors and the officers who actually patrol the streets. “It just bridges that gap between the community and police department and brings them closer, so we’re working in concert to keep the neighborhoods safer,” he said. Schindler explained that the department had a civilian employee who coordinated a neighborhood watch program about 20 years ago, but that position went away during a round of budget cuts. Advances in technology, including the Nextdoor social media site that’s organized around neighborhoods, were meant to help fill the gap. But Schindler said he learned Nextdoor doesn’t work as well as a traditional neighborhood watch program where residents meet with police in person. “The idea behind it was good, but over the years, in my opinion, it caused us as a police department to get further removed from the neighborhoods,” he said. Sometimes misinformation is posted on social media, and police don’t have the ability to comment or interact with neighbors on Nextdoor as much as some people believe, the chief said. “What I found is a lot of people think that police are monitoring it and are more involved. But since we don’t live in these neighborhoods, we don’t actually have the ability to communicate as much as people think. So there’s been a little bit of a disconnect.” Schindler also pointed out that a
link on the police department website allows people to request a meeting with officers to launch a neighborhood watch group. Neighborhoods that agree to take on the effort can ask for street signs warning criminals that they’re entering an area with a neighborhood watch program. According to Schindler, while crime rates have fallen significantly nationwide since the 1990s, crime is still a big concern for residents. “People are feeling, in general, a little bit more unease about crime and safety. The political environment is very divisive. I think that contributes to it. We’re seeing a big increase in homelessness, and with homelessness we have an increase in vagrancy which is behavior that affects quality-of-life issues and people feeling like their neighborhood isn’t as safe or clean as it used to be.” Schindler also said meeting with officers in person helps earn the respect of residents, especially in an era where police face increasing criticism and even hostility. “The last couple of years, public safety, especially policing in general, has not been in the best light. What better way than having a couple of officers standing with your neighbors talking about mutual concerns and the things we can do to help.”
“This is not vigilantes”
One thing Schindler is quick to point out is that neighborhood watch programs are not a replacement for police. “We’re being really clear. This is not vigilantes,” stated the police chief. “This is not citizens taking the law into their own hands. We don’t want people patrolling their neighborhoods and putting themselves at risk. We don’t want them taking any kind of enforcement action on anything they believe is illegal or suspicious. We just want them to be the eyes and ears.” Schindler said he’s happy with the success of the relaunch so far. “The main message is, we care,” he said. “The police department is here to work with the community. We’re better at preventing crime and responding to concerns when we work together. We want to hear from you and what you care about, and the concerns in the neighborhood, and we want to help.” For more information on the Ventura Police Department’s Neighborhood Watch Program, including resources and how to start one in your neighborhood, contact Emily Graves at egraves@cityofventura. ca.gov, call 805-339-4312 or visit www.cityofventura.ca.gov/1096/ Neighborhood-Watch.

The Seaside Tattoo Show celebrates the art of body modification June 10-12 by Alex Wilson awilson@timespublications.com hristina Diaz was a 16-year-old student at Oxnard High School when she got her first tattoo. “I walked into a shop and my mom gave me parental consent and I got a tattoo in Oxnard. And I mean, it was just kind of an instant love affair with tattoos and body art,” said Diaz, who now has tattoos covering nearly 70% of her body. While her youngest childhood memories of tattoos did not have the most positive connotations, Diaz said, her outlook changed when she started seeing more women with tattoos and other types of body modifications. “And then I just sort of became enamored, and thought it was so beautiful that a woman could set herself apart and use her own self-expression to identify herself. Whether it be changing her hair color, or getting an eyebrow piercing or body building. There are so many types of body modifications,” Diaz said. As for why Diaz has gotten so many tattoos? “I feel like the more tattoos I get and I collect, the more comfortable I am in my skin,” she said. “I feel like I’m covered in beautiful art.”

Diaz loves tattoos and the culture surrounding body modification so much that she’s organized numerous tattoo events, including this weekend’s three-day Seaside Tattoo Show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. “I’m the host. I’m the event organizer, you know, the head honcho,” she said. Once she knew how they worked inside and out, Diaz decided to

Then COVID shut down the tattoo industry since it requires such close contact, causing her to call off the event in 2020 and 2021. Diaz is excited to be back this year. “Oh, it feels fantastic. I’m so pumped up. The momentum behind the show this year has been incredible,” she said. “People are just elated to get back into the swing of things, and they miss seeing everybody.” Over 100 tattoo artists will be at the show, traveling from as far as Chicago, New York and Atlanta. Diaz said it’s an all-ages event and a kid’s corner will include ocean-themed art projects. “I’m a mom, so I like to keep things family friendly,” she said. Another draw will be tattoo enthusiast and Continued on Next Page June 9, 2022 —

FEATURE people seeking more elaborate ones can set up future appointments. Diaz said it’s a great opportunity to meet the artists and find the best personal fit. Her advice for someone getting a first tattoo is to find a connection by getting to know the artists and their styles. “Talk about the tattoo experience and what to expect. You have to be 110% in love with their artwork and their style, because it’s going to be on your body forever. So I would say, take your time, go to the show and look at 20 or 30 portfolios. Just skim through the books because you’ll see a piece of art or a type of art and you’ll connect with it if it’s meant to be.” “Ventura already loves tattooing” One of the best things about attending a Uriel Leon is a Ventura tattoo artist whose tattoo show is the wide variety of styles on work will be featured at the show. He opened display, according to Diaz. Artists who work his own studio on Telegraph Road near Pacific quickly will be able to complete small tattoos View Mall last October called De La Luz Genuine Tattoo, which means “of at the show, while the light” in Spanish. “To me what it means is carrying your own light through a dark tunnel,” he said. Leon grew up in Carpinteria and studied art at Santa Barbara City College. He started his own graphic design business at Ventura’s Bell Arts Factory, which is where he made a connection that changed the course of his artistic career. He met a tattoo artist, who agreed to take him on as an apprentice at the Ink House in Ventura. Leon parlayed that experience into a job at a busy tattoo shop in Los Angeles around 2013, where he sometimes inked as many as 10 The Seaside Tattoo tattoos a day. clown Richie the Barber who has appeared on numerous TV shows including America’s Got Talent. He will be serving as emcee and perform his own circus sideshow each day. Tattoo contests also play a big role in the show. These create opportunities for people to show off their elaborate designs that took many hours and considerable expense to complete, as well as honor the artists who created them. “They want to enter these contests. better. It’s just been great feedback,” he said. Leon is known for black and gray hyper-realistic designs, but can create any style people desire. During the show, Leon will be finishing up a full-leg sleeve on a local musician that he’s been working on for years, he said, as well as a tattoo featuring Johnny Cash for another customer. Leon said there was already a strong tattoo culture in Ventura before the Seaside Tattoo Show, and Ventura’s reputation as a tattoo destination has only grown thanks to the popular event. “I feel like Ventura already loves tattooing. When you walk around town, people are tattooed. That has become part of the culture here, so just having something like this just broadens the horizon for what can be tattooed. And bringing artists in from out of the state to really open the minds of the local tattoo artists and the people who will come to visit, I think is really neat.” One of Leon’s favorite things about tattoo shows is finding inspiration from the other artists and seeing how they do things differently, as well as the opportunity to share his knowledge with others. “I’m excited for everybody else sort of being open to the tattoo industry and really realizing that it’s an art form. And that tattoos are not easy to do. They look much easier to do than they actually are. But I think the more people realize that, then the more there can be a respect for it,” he explained. “There’s been so much said about trying to break the mold of what tattoo artists really are. You get to see that in real life. You get to see it in its raw form at the show.”

Amanda Robone of Thousand Oaks is a piercing artist who works at Clear Vision Tattoo in Moorpark. Robone started piercing herself in middle school, which she would definitely not recommend today, and said anyone who knew her in high school would not be surprised that she became a professional piercer. “Just the idea of being able to adorn your body with sparkly jewelry was really appealing to me. And it’s different and it’s kind of edgy, so I always liked that aspect of it, too,”
Uriel Leon paid homage to Ventura with this tattoo. Photo submitted she said. Robone now has around 20 piercings as well as numerous tattoos. She said there are several reasons people choose to get pierced. “For a lot of people it’s a form of taking your body back after something traumatic might have happened to them,” she explained. “It could be a form of rebellion. It can also be a celebratory thing. I get a lot of kids in here that their parents allowed them to get a piercing for getting good grades. Graduations are a big one. So there’s a lot of different reasons, and it’s really cool to be able to do that with people.” Robone has taken part in the show in past years and said its return has her so excited she’s having trouble sleeping at night because of the anticipation. She plans to have a display case full of jewelry to sell and will also be doing piercings for new customers. While she works in a private booth at the shop in Moorpark, she said it’s fun to perform piercings in public. “If it’s not something you’re familiar with, it’s really cool to go and see, and get an idea of what getting a tattoo Continued on Page 14

Few people have taken tattoos and body modifications to the extreme as much as Richie the Barber. The show’s emcee cuts hair in Los Angeles but his true calling is as a clown. He loves being a clown so much that he had his entire face tattooed to look like clown makeup. Diaz describes him as the “world’s most entertaining haircutter.” “He’s a personality in the tattoo community,” Diaz explained. “He’s been on tons of different TV shows. He’s very well known and he’s just a likable guy. He has a great positive attitude. I think people just sort of gravitate towards him. When I hang out with him, people literally follow him around. It’s crazy to see.” Richie loved clowns and dressing up as
characters since he was a kid. “My grandpa took me to the circus and I was fascinated by the fact that clowns can just be silly, don’t care, make people laugh,” he said. When he started his career as a barber in Hollywood, he already had lots of tattoos on his body but none on his face. As he perfected his juggling, clowning and unicycle skills, Richie the Barber decided to take his act up a notch with facial tattoos. His first clown tattoo was a red nose and then he had a smile tattooed on. He also had silicone implanted into his eyebrows to make the ridges stand out, and got a split tongue, resembling a snake’s. “I just got the obsession,” he recalls. “More and more, I just wanted tattoos on my face, and so then I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I’m like, a real life clown forever.’ I don’t regret it because I’m already clowning all the time anyway.” While some people look shocked when they see him in public, he typically gets a lot of laughs as well. Richie the Barber will be working at the show, but he’s also looking forward to taking it all in and enjoying the experience like other visitors. “For me it’s amazing and fun. I get to see all different types of artists and tattoo people. Get to connect with all different types of people. It’s amazing. It’s a big arts fest. It’s pretty cool.” The Seaside Tattoo Show takes place June 10-12 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 W. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. OMF run AMOC
American Modern Opera Company brings fearless spirit to the 2022 Ojai Music Festival
by Mike Nelson
D
eciding who should appear at a major music festival and what they should perform is challenging enough when there are one or two people making the choices. Imagine when there are 17. And yet, the 2022 Ojai Music Festival (scheduled June 9-12) has come together in a spirit of joyful and innovative collaboration that promises to not simply maintain but enhance the adventurous reputation the festival has enjoyed since its inception in 1947. That’s because the role of music director — a role almost always occupied by one person — is this year filled by the American Modern Opera Company, a New York-based collective of 17 performers representing music, dance and theater who, in just five years, have earned international acclaim for their energetic, genre-bending, arts-colliding operas that combine these disciplines. “I’d call the theme of this year’s festival ‘Future Forward,’” smiles Ara Guzelimian, festival artistic and executive director. “We are highlighting young composers, an emerging generation of artists to carry us forward musically. And the people of AMOC are fearless; they know no boundaries. All of them are firmly in their 30s, and they are truly artists of the present.” And that, he adds, is absolutely in tune with what the Ojai Music Festival — and Ojai itself — represents: a philosophy of musical presentation not unlike opening Christmas presents, “because you’re going to be surprised at what you find.” “The spirit of adventure of the festival in selecting artists and works to be performed is true to the spirit of Ojai which, from the Chumash forward, has always attracted artists, seekers and innovative thinkers,” says Guzelimian. “Something about this magical valley is very receptive to new experiences and adventure; it’s been in our DNA from the beginning.”
Emphasizing “the new”

For their part, the members of AMOC — pronounced, of course, “amuck” — are delighted and humbled by their role with the 76th edition of the festival, particularly after two-plus years of having performances and projects delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. “We’re thrilled to have this opportunity,” says Zack Winokur, AMOC co-founder, dancer and choreographer. “Certainly, it’s been a balancing act to program, and we’ve done it in collaboration with Ara, who certainly knows the festival and had a few specific ideas on what to include. Many of us, in fact, have a long and deep relationship with Ara, so it was incredibly moving for us to be invited to be artistic director. But it was largely left in our hands to program, to balance the schedule, to keep it from being too dense. And I think it’s something the audiences will enjoy.” Co-founder and composer Matthew Aucoin says Ojai’s audiences can expect “a serious emphasis on new works, world premieres, new stage-ings — “to feel like theater.”
“We really want everything to feel three-dimensional and inter-disciplinary. The festival’s history as a place to celebrate new work is so inspiring. It’s one of the very few places I can think of where the new, the adventurous, the boundary-busting is what people are most hungry for. It’s almost like, if you don’t do that, you’re doing something wrong — which is kind of thrilling for an artist.” The process itself in determining artists and works involved “lots of Zoom meetings,” smiles Keir GoGwilt, violinist and composer. “It’s been an eclectic effort, with a lot of projects and ideas collected, and a lot of discussion and listening. We value new work that brings to the fore voices that are unheard or not well known.” Which speaks to the core of what AMOC represents, says soprano Julia Bullock, one of several AMOC members who have previously performed at the Ojai Music Festival. “Some of us have known each other since we were in conservatory, have collaborated with each other, and have seen and participated in each other’s growth and development,” she says. “There is a reason why we were drawn to work together in the first place and why we still work together. It’s a very honest, legitimate collaboration. There is a shared vision and a beauty in creating projects with each other, and in having a positive influence on each other’s work and as human beings, that we welcome.”
From the pandemic, new opportunities
Even the pandemic and the resulting cancellation or postponement of performances has had some positive impact on AMOC. “We had a lot of time to talk to each other, to think about why we’re together, examine our mission and what we can give to and provide for each other,” says GoGwilt. “It was sort of like pushing a reset button.” “Fortunately, there were also a fair amount of opportunities to perform and create together,” adds Winokur. “We met every week for a year on Zoom, to create and discuss projects so that, after over a year of talking, we were able to enter the rehearsal room in a different place than if we simply showed up on the first day and had never seen what we’d be performing. We could hit the ground running, sure, but we could also keep going deeper and make the final product richer and better.” Several of AMOC’s works, in fact, were created or further developed and refined as a result of the pandemic, including Open Rehearsal, a collaborative dance-theater work directed by Bobbi Jene Smith featuring AMOC members and guest artists, which will be presented as a world premiere (June 10, 2:30 p.m. at Libbey Bowl). Eastman (June 10, 11 a.m. at Libbey Bowl), a multi-dimensional performance piece celebrating the work of iconoclastic composer Julius Eastman, was conceived 10 years ago, “and came to fruition through collaborative development during the pandemic,” says Bullock. “Ojai is giving us a wonderful chance to gather together and participate in each other’s projects.” Altogether, nine world premieres will take place at the Ojai Music Festival, many of them either created by AMOC or featuring its members in collaboration
vcreporter.com newly commissioned by AMOC and composed by Carolyn Chen in collaboration with Jay Campbell, Julia Eichten, GoGwilt and others, takes place June 11, 2:30 p.m. at Besant Hill School. Throughout the festival, works ranging from Bach and Schubert to Seeger and Dylan and beyond will be presented in what Guzelimian calls “an immersion experience, just settling in and being willing to experience the unknown, embrace a sense of discovery. That’s been our hallmark from the beginning of the festival, and it’s so satisfying to have this intense collective of young artists who are so uninhibited in their embrace of all music.”

The 2022 OMF begins with a June 9 concert featuring AMOC core members in a musical marathon including works by Aucoin (“Shaker Dance”), Kate Soper (“The Rose Once Blown”), Celeste Oram (“The Power of Moss”), Bob Dylan (“Masters of War”), Frederic Rzewski (“Coming Together”), and Eastman (“Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc”). AMOC concludes the festival on June 12 with a joyful, high-spirited “communal catharsis” featuring all of the festival’s artists performing a wide array of Baroque music as well as Eastman’s jubilant “Stay On It.” And what should audiences expect to “take away” from the festival? “I don’t try to anticipate how people will receive what is offered,” smiles Bullock. “But coming out of the pandemic, when the risks are still so high, any opportunity to gather together is almost a miracle. So I genuinely feel a sense of gratitude to be able to gather because it’s exactly what music and the performing arts are designed to do, help us communicate and commune. I hope people can walk away from any performance they attend feeling more enriched and connected to all that surrounds them.” “I’m continually grateful for so much generosity among all artists to give to each other’s projects,” adds GoGwilt. “That generosity in spirit is what characterizes our group, and we hope the audience receives that spirit.” In assessing the festival’s spirit of adventure, Guzelimian makes the analogy to travel. “It’s one thing to revisit what’s familiar and comfortable, and I don’t undervalue that,” he says. “But when we venture into what we don’t know, our world becomes bigger. It’s so broadening to go somewhere you’ve not been and learn you have the skills to navigate that. And that same sense of discovery is what you realize when you come to this festival. “So when you come to Ojai, come expecting to be surprised. The festival offers a tremendous amount of creative energy, and in AMOC a wonderful collection of artists who refuse to be categorized. And that is to the benefit of everyone.”♦ The 2022 Ojai Music Festival takes place June 9-12 at various locations throughout Ojai, with multiple presentations throughout each day.
