Purple is the New Party
Make America safe again by Paul Moomjean
I
paulmoomjean@yahoo.com don’t know if America was ever great. I know that America has the potential to be great. The foundations of greatness are there. Yet, we can all acknowledge that while the American experiment has had its ups and downs, it is fair to say that not all have been able to participate in the promise the Founding Fathers attempted to set up. They also failed at providing it to women, minorities, slaves, etc. until decades later. Yet, while America has never been perfect, it always seemed safe. Even if a person was living under discrimination, there was a sense of community that protected them. Today, that sense of safety has completely been dismantled. We are no longer a country where parents feel safe sending their kids to school, where the
LGBTQ+ community can go freely without religious extremists callings for violence, or where women can walk college campuses without fear of a rape culture covered up by administrators afraid of bad press. Obviously, the last few years have shifted our culture, but it appears that while former President Donald Trump attempted to restore old-fashioned rhetoric, he and his followers have created a much more unsafe world — one that the next leader must clean up. On Thursday, Jan. 9, 2022 the Jan. 6 insurrection hearings began, and the evidence is quite damning to Trump and his ilk. “Over a series of hearings in the coming weeks you will hear testimony, live and on video, from more than half a dozen former White House staff in the Trump administration, all of whom were in the West Wing of the White House on Jan. 6,” Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY)
said at the first House select committee hearing on the attack. “You will hear testimony that ‘the president did not really want to put anything out’ calling off the riot or asking his supporters to leave. You will hear that President Trump was yelling and ‘really angry’ at advisors who told him he needed to be doing something more.” If one doesn’t like the idea of Trump not speaking for himself, here are his own words: “January 6th was not simply a protest, it represented the greatest movement in the history of our Country to Make America Great Again,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform. The fear that any of us had that Trump would inspire and support violence based on his early speeches has proven itself true, and his neo-Christian following has only created even more violent followers.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports, “The pastor of a North Texas church evicted in February from its building for trying to incite violence against the LGBT community is facing protests again after calling for gay people to be executed. ‘What does God say is the answer, is the solution for the homosexual in 2022, here in the New Testament, here in the book of Romans? That they are worthy of death,’ preacher Dillon Awes of Stedfast Baptist Church in Watauga said in a Sunday sermon.” “These people should be put to death,” Awes continued. “Every single homosexual in our country should be charged with a crime, the abomination of homosexuality that they have, they should be convicted in a lawful trial, they should be sentenced to death, they should be lined up against a wall and shot in the back of the head.” Our tone as a nation has gone
beyond blue states and red states and become the language of war. While I don’t believe there are politicians who can “bring us together,” I do believe there are leaders out there who can quiet down the mob. At this point in America’s history we are not really looking to be great again. We need to become sane again. Or at least safe again. In a world with violent mass shootings and violent actions being called for and celebrated, we have lost our soul as a country. To retain it, we must return to the basic principle that each citizen is worthy of dignity. It starts with the Right quieting down and the Left not making every word become inherently racist or sexist. Can we start by saying violence is not the answer? Instead of us trying to point and yell at the other side, we need to listen. Because if we don’t, it might become too late to ever become great.

New faces win local races June 7 election shakes up VC offices by Alex Wilson
I
awilson@timespublications.com t’s rare for a June primary election to usher in so many new faces to countywide elected offices. Ventura County residents will soon have a new Sheriff, Assessor, County Clerk and Recorder and Treasurer-Tax Collector as a result of the June 7 vote. That’s due to several retirements and the defeat of an incumbent . . . which also happens infrequently. Voters also narrowed the choices for several races in the November election, including two open seats on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, U.S. Congress and California State Assembly. And a hotly contested race regarding oil drilling regulations was narrowly defeated in a major win for oil companies that spent heavily on Measures A and B.
Fryhoff, Nasarenko win
One of the most high-profile contests was for Ventura County Sheriff, where incumbent Bill Ayub lost to Cmdr. Jim

Fryhoff. Fryhoff was boosted by support from unions representing deputies and other local peace officers. “My team was amazing. The support that we had from the community was evident when we were out walking precincts,” Fryhoff said. “What really resonated was letting people know our goal is to connect law enforcement with the community rather than being two separate entities. That we’re going to work together to keep Ventura County safe.” Ayub said he and his supporters did not expect to see him trailing by over 10% when the first tally was announced. “We were surprised,” Ayub said. “We felt like we put a good case forward and ran a clean and honest and ethical campaign. And we’re certainly disappointed in the results.” Another closely watched local contest was for District Attorney, where incumbent Erik Nasarenko beat his challenger John Barrick, a senior deputy DA who has prosecuted numerous homicide cases in recent years. Barrick said he’s proud of his first run for office and that he was able to spread his campaign pledge to always put crime victims first.

“I ran because I believed I needed to, to try to fix the things going wrong in the county and the state. And there aren’t too many people who can say that in their lives. That they stood up for something because they believed in it. And I can say that now,” Barrick said. Barrick told the Ventura County Reporter he hopes to continue working as a prosecutor but expected to be reassigned from handling murder trials — considered a top assignment in the DA’s office — after challenging his boss. But Nasarenko said Barrick will not be reassigned after calling with congratulations and pledging support for the office. “I said ‘I am delighted to have you. We’ve got a number of homicides that I would like for you to try.’ And I know that he is ready and extremely capable,” the District Attorney said.
A and B defeated
Measures A and B were narrowly defeated, so oil companies will not have to follow new environmental regulations adopted by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in 2020. Ben Oakley is campaign spokesperson for the “No on A and B” campaign who works for the Western States Petroleum Association, and explained what he thought resonated with voters. “Obviously energy costs are a major issue that everybody is feeling right now and obviously that’s a major motivating factor,” he said. “Also, depen-

dence on foreign oil is very timely, I think, with all the world events.” Tomás Rebecchi is campaign manager for the “Yes on A and B” campaign who works with several environmental groups. He said they were proud of their ultimately unsuccessful effort that he described as “David and Goliath.” “It’s a tough uphill battle but I think we put up a really great fight and we gave big oil a black eye either way,” said Rebecchi. “The movement and our organization are stronger now than before this election. We created a lot of networks and friendships, and really learned how to make an
effective countywide network to fight against this big of an industry. Win or lose we’re stronger, and it was worth fighting.”

“Experience matters”
In the race for County Clerk and Recorder, Michelle Ascencion handily beat Bruce Boyer and Jeff Hargleroad with about 65% of the vote, meaning she will not have to face a runoff in November. Ascencion will be Ventura County’s first Black County Clerk-Recorder and Continued on Page 10

ort Hueneme City Councilmember Steven Gama loves walking his dog on the beach, but has to leave the city he governs to do it legally. Gama takes his dog Jackson to nearby Silver Strand Beach, or more distant stretches of coastline in Santa Barbara or Morro Bay where it is legal, but he and other dog owners in Port Hueneme could one day have a closer legal option: One June 6, the Port Hueneme City Council voted 4-1 to ask city staff to research the idea of revising an ordinance forbidding dogs on Hueneme Beach first passed in 1991. “I think it could be a good idea if it could be controlled,” Gama said. “It’s a wellness thing. You know, dogs like to be walked. My dog is a golden retriever, so he’s a water dog and just loves to be around the water.” Port Hueneme does not have an official dog park, and city officials say it’s one of the top priorities mentioned by residents when surveyed about park needs. Two dog parks are included in a park master plan adopted last year. One is at Bubbling Springs Park that has funding identified and is in the design process, city officials said. Another unfunded dog park is proposed at Hueneme Beach Park but would be located across the street from the beach and not on the sand. Some councilmembers have raised concerns about the length of time it’s taken to build a fenced-in dog park, which is part of the reason for the interest in opening Hueneme Beach to dogs.

During the meeting, representatives of the Audubon Society discussed pros and cons of changing the rules to allow dogs on Hueneme Beach. The bird enthusiast group monitors nests of threatened and endangered birds at Oxnard’s Ormond Beach just east of Hueneme Beach, including western snowy plovers and California least terns. Cynthia Hartley coordinates the Audubon Shorebird Recovery Program and said the current ban on dogs at Hueneme and Ormond beaches is not enforced enough. “Because even now with the dog ban on Hueneme and Ormond we still have a lot of dogs,” Hartley told the council. “We have recorded, in

Snowy Plover on Ormond Beach. Photo by Alex Vaca the past year, hundreds and hundreds of dogs on Ormond Beach and most of them come up from Hueneme. And we believe that more dogs on Hueneme Beach would mean more dogs at Ormond Beach. And as it is, we are struggling with chick mortality, and more dogs would be potentially disastrous.” While Hartley has concerns about allowing dogs on Hueneme Beach, she said if rules were created limiting dogs to a certain part of the beach north of the Port Hueneme Pier and were enforced, it might actually be an improvement over the current situation. She told the council that there should be signs installed and a public education campaign if dogs are allowed sometime after a future vote on the issue, and people who break the rules should be issued citations. “Without enforcement these ordinances don’t pack much punch. People will do what they can get away with,” she said, adding that she would love to send people with dogs to a legal dog beach that would keep them away from nesting birds. Deputy City Manager Charles Peretz gave a report during the meeting that detailed all the beaches in Ventura County where dogs are allowed or banned. He said there’s no consistent policy, with eight beaches banning dogs entirely and nine allowing them as long as they are leashed. Beaches where dogs are prohibited include Rincon Point and San Buenaventura State beaches. Some beaches that allow dogs on a leash include Solimar Beach, Oxnard Beach and
Sycamore Cove Beach. Only one local beach allows dogs off leash, but only during certain hours, and that’s Hollywood Beach, Peretz said. He continued that the dog ban at Hueneme Beach is meant to prevent safety issues involving aggressive dogs, as well as dog waste on the beach and impacts on wildlife. “The biggest benefit of revising the ordinance to allow dogs down at the beach would be to enhance recreational experiences both for the dogs themselves and also for the dog owners. And we know that this is important for both physical and emotional benefits for both humans and dogs alike,” he said.
Time, cost, environmental impacts to consider
City Attorney Kevin Spaulding said moving ahead with lifting the dog ban will not be easy, mostly because of the endangered and threatened birds that live in the area. An extensive environmental review process in consultation with state and federal wildlife officials would be required, he said. “If the object is to get a dog park quick, the beach is not the place to do it. If the object is to change the nature and character of the beach for the community’s enjoyment, and time is not a factor, then perhaps we look at the beach as a place to investigate allowing dogs,” Spaulding said. Councilmember Laura Hernandez cast the lone “no” vote against further study of the idea, and said the first official dog park with fences and other amenities should be built in the not-too-distant future since planning is already well underway. After the meeting, Hernandez told the Ventura County Reporter that the cost of the required studies was also a concern. “I’m not necessarily opposed to the idea,” she explained. “I am concerned about owners who don’t act responsibly and clean up after their dogs. There’s an enforcement issue. There’s an environmental impact issue, there’s a cost issue. There are too many unknowns, which is primarily why I voted against it.”

It’s kind of an overused cliché, but I really do stand on the shoulders of the Black women who came before me, and have paved the way, and struggled through so many other industries,” Ascencion said. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself too, because I’m just a local gal, grew up in south Oxnard. And to work my way up . . . it’s almost dizzying.” Results in the race for Assessor showed Keith Taylor defeated Bradley Coburn. Taylor received over 76% of the votes, and credits his victory to many years working for assessor’s offices in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. “It was just a really exhilarating feeling, exciting feeling. I worked hard on the campaign to get elected and I felt a good relief afterwards,” he said. In the race for Treasurer Tax-Collector, the office’s second-in-command Sue Horgan beat Ron Speakman, a financial planner who serves on Camarillo’s Pleasant Valley School District board. Horgan was attending a conference for treasurer-tax collectors in San Diego when she saw the results. “I think the voters really spoke in this election, and what they said is that experience matters,” she said. Ventura County Auditor-Controller Jeffery Burgh and County Superintendent of Schools Cesar Morales were also re-elected since they ran unopposed.

Several races are headed to runoffs in November and the Ventura County Reporter will provide additional coverage of those races as the election approaches. In the second district supervisorial race, Camarillo resident and former deputy mayor of Los Angeles Jeff Gorell will face off against Thousand Oaks Councilmember Claudia Bill-De la Peña. Gorell received about 37% of the vote and Bill-De la Peña nearly
49%, while the third candidate, Tim McCarthy, trailed with 14%. Results in the fourth district race for supervisor, covering Simi Valley and Moorpark, will see two longtime elected officials compete in November: Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin and Ventura County Community College District Trustee Bernardo Perez. Parvin had nearly 34% of the vote while Perez received just over 27%. Ed Abele received almost 23% with Dean Kunicki garnering about 16%. In the race for the 38th Assembly district, incumbent Democrat Steve Bennett of Ventura received over 61% of the vote while his Republican challenger and Oxnard resident Cole Brocato came out with just over 35%. Daniel Wilson, who stated no party preference, had nearly 4%. Democratic incumbent Jacqui Irwin will run against Republican Lori Mills for the 42nd Assembly district covering Thousand Oaks and surrounding areas. Irwin received over 54% percent of the votes, Mills had about 29%, and 16% favored Republican Ted Nordblum. In the race for the 24th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Salud Carbajal received over 61% and will go up against Brad Allen, who had the support of about 30% of voters. Michele R. Weslander Quaid had nearly 6% and Jeff Frankenfield had less than 2%. Carbajal and Allen both live in Santa Barbara County, but following the recent redistricting, the district includes Ventura and Ojai. And in the 26th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Julia Brownley will face off against Republican Matt Jacobs. Brownley had the support of more than 55% of voters, while Jacobs finished with nearly 38%. Three other candidates, Dave Goodman, Paul Nathan Taylor and Fadde Mikhail had less than 7% combined. The newly redrawn 26th Congressional district includes Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Calabasas.

Lawn owners adapt to water restrictions by David Goldstein
M
any communities in Ventura County are now under one-dayper-week outdoor watering restrictions, with exceptions for drip irrigation and hand-watering with a shutoff valve. Other portions of Ventura County also have restrictions on frequency and timing of outdoor watering. As in past droughts, water purveyors are managing increased applications for incentives offered to replace lawns with low-water-using landscape. Nevertheless, many people love their lawns and will not rip out the landscape they spent years maintaining. Grass makes great play areas and can look beautiful. Reduction to once-per-week watering will not kill most lawns. Scotts, a major vendor of lawn maintenance products, recommends enough watering to keep
the top six to eight inches of soil moist, with the company’s website stating, “Most lawns need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week — either from rain or watering — to soak the soil that deeply.” However, “that amount of water can either be applied during a single watering or divided into two waterings during the week.” Nevertheless, many local lawns will brown and wilt, and lawns in some communities will die. Watering restrictions on runoff, sprinkler types and watering times in some areas make sufficient watering impractical in a single day. If you do intend to have your lawn and meet restrictions too, then some watering tips can help. Scotts recommends watering early in the morning to reduce initial evaporation but ensure eventual drying during the day. LawnMowerGuru.com advises using mulch-
ing mowers to retain moisture and cutting lawns at higher settings to help grass grow deeper roots. Starting with sod of drought resistant grass varieties is impractical, due to initial watering requirements, but companies advertising in national magazines and on the Internet are promoting mail order “plugs” of grass varieties, such as Zoysia, allegedly requiring just one third as much water as other varieties and capable of being planted into existing lawns. Plugs can be used to fill in brown spots. The Zoysia Farm Nurseries website claims just a one-inch plug per square foot will completely fill in a lawn within two the three growing seasons and will “choke out crabgrass” and other weeds. However, the powerful nature of this type of grass is also a potential problem. It is invasive and difficult to control. It could spread to garden
areas where homeowners do not want grass, and it could even spread to neighbors’ yards. With new water restrictions, many lawns will develop brown spots at the tops of slopes, in direct sunlight, and on spots of excessive wear. Grass may go dormant in places, even if onceper-week watering keeps grass from dying. One solution is paint specifically designed for making dormant turf look healthy. Solarogen sells this paint via the Internet, urging customers to ensure 24 hours of drying time so the paint “cures” and “rub off” will be minimized. The website claims the paint will “keep grass blades green for months or until cut by mowing.” Elsewhere on the website, the “months” claim is clarified: “It may even last as long as three months.” An online Safety Data Sheet
for one common type of turf paint classifies the product as “suspected of causing cancer,” recommending protective gloves, clothing, eyewear and face protection during application. However, the reason for the warning is the product’s use of carbon black, which is also present in many items we tolerate daily, including the ink from photocopy machines. Based on centuries of history, from the time lawns were a hallmark of British estates, Americans have been conditioned to desire grass. The current drought will likely not revolutionize local landscaping. Instead, homeowners will find ways to adapt. David Goldstein, an Environmental Resource Analyst with the Ventura County Public Works Agency, can be reached at 805-658-4312 or david.goldstein@ventura.org.

LEAVING the
STATION? Breakdown in negotiations could derail plans for train operation in Fillmore
F
by Alex Wilson awilson@timespublications.com illmore’s reputation as the railroad capital of Ventura County might be nearing the end of the line. For decades, tourists and locals have boarded trains in Fillmore for scenic excursions, dinner rides or even nostalgia-filled trips to cut down a Christmas tree at a farm. But a dispute between Fillmore city officials and a Northern California company that recently secured a 35-year lease for the tracks stretching between Ventura and Piru could result in the company leaving behind its current base of local operations in Fillmore for greener pastures. Positions hardened in the face of two news releases issued by Sierra Northern Railway and the city of Fillmore this month regarding stalled contract negotiations related to cityowned property in the center of town. Railroad officials sent out a June 1 news 12 —

release claiming city officials asked the company to move off of the property, a location where people bought tickets and boarded trains operated by the Fillmore and Western Railway before the excursion train company ended about a year ago. “It is unfortunate that the city does not want to continue to work with us as this means a loss of excursion operations for the residents of Fillmore who for so many years grew up around the trains,” said Matthew Blackburn, Sierra Northern Ventura division manager. A June 2 news release from the city of Fillmore confirmed the breakdown in the negotiations. “It is unfortunate we could not come to an agreement with Sierra Northern Railway. One item of concern was Sierra Northern Railway removing language that their use of the properties cannot bother neighbors,” Fillmore City Manager David Rowlands said in the news release. “Their actions have led me to believe Sierra Northern Railway never really wanted

to be a part of Fillmore and that they are using this opportunity to relocate to where they really wanted to be.” Officials with Fillmore and Sierra Northern have both said that there’s a glimmer of hope negotiations could get back on track in spite of the conflict. But railroad officials said they’ll continue to look for alternative locations for their operations from Ventura to Piru, including both government-owned and private property. One potential new location is Santa Paula. Santa Paula city officials confirmed that a meeting with railroad officials took place on June 10 to discuss the possibility of relocating there. Santa Paula officials told the Ventura County Reporter that they might be open to hosting an excursion-related train stop, although there’s not enough room in Santa Paula for other aspects of the railroad operation such as storing and maintaining trains.

History of the Santa Paula Branch Line
The Santa Paula Branch Line was built in 1887 by what was then called Southern Pacific Transportation Company to connect Santa Barbara to the main line between Los Angeles and San Francisco, according to Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) documents. A 1978 storm severely damaged the tracks east of Piru, and by the early 1990s Southern Pacific sought to abandon the remainder of the branch line. In 1995, the VCTC purchased the line from Southern Pacific for $8.5 million with the goal of future train use and to develop a recreational trail along the tracks that’s been built in some places near cities but is still far from completion. The tracks were leased to the previous excursion train operators, Fillmore and Western Railway Company, which also hired out the trains for the film and television industry. Many productions have been shot along the line in recent years, including Water for Elephants and episodes of TV shows Bones and Justified. The lease with Fillmore and Western ended in June 2021, and the owners did not seek to renew the agreement. In anticipation of the lease ending, VCTC sought new rail operators and received two proposals. The proposals were reviewed by a team of VCTC staff and railroad experts which resulted in December’s long-term agreement with Sierra Northern approved by the VCTC board. VCTC Director of Planning and Sustainability Amanda Fagan said the new agreement has numerous advantages for the agency and taxpayers compared with the lease under which Fillmore and Western operated. For example, the new operator is leasing the entire right-ofway on both sides of the tracks instead of just the tracks themselves, relieving the agency of the responsibility for picking up trash and maintaining those areas. Fagan said the VCTC has not been directly involved in the negotiations between Fillmore and Sierra Northern, which is complicated by the fact that VCTC owns the tracks while the city of Fillmore owns the nearby property that’s
been used to support the excursion trains. “We want them to all be successful,” Fagan said.
Sierra Northern looks south
Sierra Northern Railway is new to Ventura County but has deep roots in California. The company dates back to 1897 when railroad tracks were built to connect California’s Central Valley to the Gold Country area. Today, the railway operates over 100 miles of tracks in Northern California, serving customers that ship products including produce and lumber, officials said. A sister company, Mendocino Railway Company, operates three tourist trains including the popular Skunk Train which runs through redwood forests near Fort Bragg. Sierra Northern has also pioneered the use of recreational railbikes, human-powered vehicles that could one day come to Ventura County in addition to excursion trains, railroad officials said. Sierra Northern President and CEO Kennan H. Beard III said his company has been interested in taking over the tracks in Ventura County for many years, and previously tried to purchase Fillmore and Western. He’s hopeful that the rail line will attract new freight customers in the future, and will also continue to be successful at supporting excursion trains. In addition to securing the long-term lease, Sierra Northern purchased most of the equipment owned by Fillmore and Western, including locomotives and passenger cars. If the company brings back excursion trains as planned, they’ll relocate more equipment from Northern California. Beard said whether or not the base of operations remains in Fillmore will not affect the company’s prospects in Ventura County for the long haul, since Sierra Northern has a 35-year operating agreement with two 30-year options. He pledged to establish locations to base freight
operations, as well as excursion train and railbike boarding facilities. “Just because we couldn’t come to terms with the city of Fillmore doesn’t mean we’re walking away,” he explained. “It’s not that we’re going to take our ball and go home. We still are committed to operating trains on the Ventura County Transportation Commission Santa Paula line.”
Negotiations derailed
Beard did say that he was disappointed with how things have worked out in Fillmore, and disputed many statements in the city’s news release. “This is the honeymoon phase, and the city gave us kind of raw treatment. So if we want to move forward and be in their town, we need to know that they’re going to treat us as a respected part of their community, not the way they came across in both the lease negotiations as well as their press release with all the inaccuracies and untruths.” The breakdown in negotiations with Fillmore led railway officials to look for more sites, Beard said, and they’re investigating all opportunities near the tracks. “Any location along there could work. We’re looking at property as far east as Piru to as far west as Saticoy. So Santa Paula is certainly in the running. I can say that the city of Santa Paula has been nothing but accommodating and would love to see us land in their town,” said Beard. It would be a blow to Fillmore’s reputation as a tourist destination if the city no longer had trains based there, Beard said. “Let’s face it. Tourist trains have been the base of Fillmore’s tourist industry for many, many years and it would be a shame to get up and leave. It’s a great location, but we have to feel wanted and appreciated.” One of the issues Rowlands brought up in the city news release was the storage of “creosote-soaked” railroad ties near homes that “sickened” people with “noxious odors.”
“We got some complaints from the neighborhood that there was a strong gas smell. We went out and found it was valid. We identified it as being from the new railroad ties,” Rowlands told the Ventura County Reporter. Beard said Sierra Northern dealt with the complaint as quickly as possible and moved the rail ties away from homes. He also pointed out what he called “numerous inaccuracies” with Fillmore’s news release. According to Beard, the railroad ties that became an issue were stored on property owned by the VCTC and not the city of Fillmore, for example. “About the only thing that holds 100% true is the first paragraph where it says we were unable to come to terms with the city,” he said. Beard said they had hoped to get the excursion trains operating again by the end of the year, but that timeline has been pushed back due to the stalled negotiations with Fillmore and “ultimately coming to a point where we couldn’t agree to the terms they were asking us to accept in the lease, and they basically told us that it was a take-it-or-leave-it agreement. And we chose to leave it.” Beard said he was told he would be given a timeline by Fillmore officials on when the company needs to move all their equipment off city property, but has not received one yet. City Manager Rowlands, however, said he’s still hopeful negotiations can get back on track to keep the trains based in Fillmore. “I welcome them back to talk if that’s what they want to do, and hopefully we can move forward and get this thing done,” Rowlands said. “I know that the residents and the city council still would like to have them to have their operations in Fillmore. We had a good relationship with the past operator and we’d like to have a good relationship with Sierra as well.” Sierra Northern Railway, sierranorthern.com June 16, 2022 —

News in art and culture from around Ventura County MVC debuts three new exhibits The Museum of Ventura County is getting its summer underway with a whole slew of new exhibits and programming. Three separate exhibits open on June 16. The Jazz Age in Ventura County — from Prohibition and the wealth boom to a tide of repression and exclusion — will be thoroughly explored in images and artifacts found in All That Glitters. Get a different glimpse of the past with Chromatic: The Museum in Six Colors, which will feature pieces from the museum’s permanent collection amassed over 100 years. These items, each of which tell a story, go beyond works of art to include rarities, antiques and even everyday items owned by local residents. A retrospective of the work of the late Carol Rosenak (1925-2002) will also be on display, covering 30 years of her creativity, from early printmaking to still lifes and abstract works. A reception for all three exhibitis will be held on Saturday, June 18, 3-5 p.m., and museum members will receive a complimentary ticket for a Bee’s Knees cocktail courtesy of Ventura Spirits Company. And speaking of bees . . . the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula will soon debut Save the Pollinators: A Youth-Led Environmental Restoration Project. The exhibit showcases through photography, music and art the work of the Save the Pollinators Project, developed by teens in Ojai with the aim of combatting the dramatic decrease in birds, bees and butterflies through the creation of the Green Valley Project Pollinator Corridor. The exhibit opens Friday, June 17, with a reception 5-7 p.m.
This summer MVC will also host Play-Well TEKnologies summer camps starting June 27. Kids will have the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and math through creative play with LEGO®s. Classes take place Monday through Friday, with both morning and afternoon sessions and programs for different age groups available. For more information on all these activities and others, visit venturamuseum.org. OPC debuts legacy fund On June 4, the Ojai Playwrights Conference celebrated its 25th anniversary with a benefit gala, “Caring and Daring Together,” held at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles. At the event, OPC announced the founding of the Robert H. Egan Legacy Fund. Honoring the work of longtime artistic director and producer Robert Egan, the fund will support New Works Festival playwrights. It was a bittersweet celebration, as 2022 is the final season for Egan, who is leaving after more than two decades with OPC. “I’m truly honored that the organization I’ve been involved with for 22 years has decided to create this fund in my name,” said Egan via press release. “My career goal has been to find and nourish playwrights as they build the work that illuminates our world. This fund will help make that continue to happen at OPC.” Egan will continue to lead OPC through the New Works Festival, taking place Aug. 7-14. Later, he plans to pursue a variety of projects in film, theatre and television, including the creation of a performance workshop “The Ramsdell Project” with his wife, Michelle Joyner, which will

He was 78 years old. In 1992, Brott succeeded Frank Salazar as the music director of the Ventura County Symphony, which later merged with Conejo Symphony Orchestra to become New West Symphony. He would go on to serve as music director for more than 15 years, establishing NWS as one of the most respected orchestras in Southern California, winning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. He also worked internationally and in his native Canada, where he founded the Brott Music Festival in 1987. He would eventually be named an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of Ontario. “Those fortunate enough to work with him at New West Symphony enjoyed his infectious sense of humor on many happy occasions,” said Natalia Staneva, NWS CEO, and Michael Christie, music director, via press release. “He was a giant of the classical music world. Boris, you will be dearly missed.”

HOW DOES THE PORT HELP REDUCE EMISSIONS WHILE CREATING JOBS?
To continue its legacy of employment and trade, the Port of Hueneme is working with the city of Oxnard to evaluate a 34-acre, temporary parking lot on a vacant lot on Hueneme Road, which will help foster economic opportunity and reduce truck traffic in our communities.
This project is integral to the Port’s competitiveness as one of the nation’s top six auto ports!
If approved, the Project: u Will consolidate auto movement to reduce diesel truck trips through neighborhoods near the Port, significantly reducing truck emissions. u Will create 30 jobs for the life of the Project. u Adds $2.2 million in local salaries annually. u Local and veteran priority hiring for site improvements (under the Port’s Project Labor Agreement; Construction workers will also learn lifetime trade skills). u Project is temporary, 3-5 years duration. u Port use preserves the site during this temporary period to plan for potential future opportunities for the community. u A full environmental impact report (EIR) was conducted per the community’s request. u The EIR showed no significant impacts to the environment, including water quality and local sensitive species. u The project is not connected in any way to a larger Port development project. u A maximum of 240 vehicle trips a day (compare that to as many as 3,000 daily trips at drive thrus!). u The vehicle storage facility would be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, helping to secure the area and reduce crime. u Vehicles would be driven to and from the facility Monday through Saturday, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Nighttime operations would not occur. u Uses solar lighting that sits well below the height of existing street lights to minimize any light pollution and to be more sensitive to migratory birds.
What are the specifics on the Project? In order to keep up with the highly competitive and larger global economic trends of the auto shipping logistics market, the Port is seeking a Special Use Permit from the City of Oxnard for a temporary outdoor vehicle storage facility that can accommodate up to 4,944 vehicles as overflow storage. If approved, the 34-acre temporary lot would be operated for a maximum of five years. The Project site consists of two vacant parcels, zoned light industrial, situated at the southeast corner of Hueneme Road and Perkins Road, outside of the Coastal Zone. The purpose of the proposed Project is threefold: u Facilitate commercial success for Port clients to ensure they keep their business in the region. u Reduce and consolidate reliance on Off-Port storage locations, which reduces emissions. u Provide operational flexibility for the transport of vehicles that already flow through the Port.
This project improves the property in a most environmentally sustainable way and gives the community a window of opportunity to plan future uses.

s someone who cut his teeth growing up on the sounds of power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Warren Haynes always knew the blues were as important as the hard-rock riffing of those outfits. Blues has been a major part of Haynes’ musical expression, whether it was while he was a member of the Allman Brothers Band, doing his own thing as a solo artist or as a part of Gov’t Mule. So it should come as no surprise that the North Carolina native has always been hankering to record an allblues record, something that came to fruition late last year with the release of Heavy Load Blues. The pandemic-forced lockdown proved to be the perfect opportunity for Haynes and the rest of the Mule (drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist/guitarist Danny Louis and bassist Jorgen Carlsson) to set up shop at the Power Station New England and create an authentic blues sound via a combination of analog tape combined with vintage guitars, amps and equipment. “I’ve been thinking about making a blues record for five or six years, so it’s been on the back burner for a while,” Haynes explained in a recent interview. “And then when the whole lockdown thing started, everybody was having to figure out how to deal with the new situation. Somehow, the thought of moving the blues record to the front burner kind of made sense. I also was writing tons of music and I don’t usually
write many blues songs or ones that are considered to be blues songs. But I had written five or six over the past couple of years, so it was all kind of pointing in that direction. “We wanted to make two records, which we did by setting up in the studio in Connecticut and making two different records in two different rooms at the same time because we had all this time on our hands and I had all this new material,” he said. “We would literally go in the big room in the morning and record until about 9 p.m. for the upcoming Gov’t Mule record. And then around nine at night, we’d move into the small room, which we dubbed the Blues Room, and play blues the rest of the night and we just did that every day. Making the blues record didn’t take that long and we were only recording at night, which was great because the blues is meant to be played at night.” The result yielded a deep dive into blues classics by the likes of Leroy Carr, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker that wound up alongside a number of originals and stylistic left turns — such as a dip into the Tom Waits catalog. What makes Heavy Load Blues such a rich listening experience is that Gov’t Mule avoids cluttering the track list with hoary weekend warrior classics like “Hoochie Coochie Man” or “Sweet Home Chicago” and instead goes a little deeper into the genre’s canon, a strategy Haynes made sure to follow. “I’ve been making a list [of songs I wanted to cover] for quite a while now,” Haynes said. “Whenever I’d hear a song I liked, I’d
vcreporter.com It was also important that the original songs and the cover songs both sounded like the same record. I didn’t want any of it to feel like it didn’t belong.” write it down with the idea that one of these days when I get around to writing a blues record, I might want to tackle this song and just put it on the list. Some of them I’ve thought about for years but some of them we added recently, like the Tom Waits tune ‘Make It Rain.’ I didn’t think about that until about two years ago when I was listening to that song. I thought it was just a blues song and thought about doing that because it seemed like a cool idea to not only include classic blues, but to maybe throw a curveball in there. I wanted to stray as far away from just playing a bunch of blues favorites as possible. I wanted to cover Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and Junior Wells, but I didn’t want to do the obvious stuff that everybody would choose. It was also important that the original songs and the cover songs both sounded like the same record. I didn’t want any of it to feel like it didn’t belong.” Now, as has long been the case for Haynes and the Mule, the road beckons like an old friend, particularly after fluctuating COVID19 numbers forced the band to cancel and
reschedule dates from late 2021. Fans can expect plenty of music off Heavy Load Blues along with a smattering of songs from the next studio effort of original material slated to drop later this year. A slew of American dates will be followed by the Mule heading over the pond to Europe, always keeping an eye on what the pandemic might serve up. “We’re monitoring the science, like everybody else, and we just have to be cautious,” Haynes said. “The entire business is forced into this cautious sort of situation and rightly so. We’re just going to take it one step at a time. [As for the new project], one of the things that Dickey Betts and I talked about way back when we were writing for the Allman Brothers was how important and fun it is to write for the strengths of the band. When you have a project on the horizon like that, it makes you focus on writing that way and the result is always good.” ♦ Gov’t Mule performs on Sunday, June 19, at 5 p.m. at Libbey Bowl, 210 S. O
jai has had a busy month! June opened with the Ojai Blues Fest, followed up by the contemporary classical music extravaganza of the Ojai Music Festival. The good times just keep coming with this weekend’s return of the Ojai Wine Festival. Whether you gravitate toward red, white, rosé or bubbly, rest assured there will be something delicious to pour in your glass come June 18. Now in its 34th iteration, the Ojai Wine Festival is the longest running wine festival in Ventura County. The location helps: Beautiful Lake Casitas makes a fantastic spot to sip, nosh, mingle and dance. Santa Barbara band Area 51 will be throwing down oldschool funk, disco and other popular dance favorites, and it will be hard to sit still once they take the stage. “Wine” is right in the festival name, and the lineup of vendors does not disappoint. Local vintners like Boccali, Magnavino, Majestic Oak, Topa Mountain and Trois le Fou will be pouring alongside “neighbors to the north” Rincon Mountain and Beckmen and eccentric Santa Cruz label Bonny Doon. Most exciting, perhaps, will be the numerous boutique and garagiste winemakers in attendance — a rare chance to taste some exceptional and hard-to-find products from Paso Robles and other locales. And of course, no party or event in Ventura County would be complete without beer (even at a wine festival). Among the many to be found in the beer garden will be craft outfits like Oak and Otter (San Luis Obispo) and Coronado (San Diego County) and local favorite Ojai Valley Brewing. Big names like Firestone Walker, Dos Equis and Heineken will also be around. Where there’s beer there tends to be cider and hard seltzer, too, and while Ojai’s own Flying Embers will
New to the Ojai Wine Festival this year will be boutique Ventura winery Trois le Fou. be in attendance, other vendors will be coming from far and away, like Elysian out of Seattle and Canada’s Nütrl vodka, seltzer and juice beverage. SLO distillery Rod and Hammer will be on hand for you whiskey lovers out there. Designated drivers, non-drinkers or others who choose not to imbibe have not been left out of the Ojai Wine Festival for 2022. Those attendees can fill their glasses with flavored sparkling waters, energy drinks and Jarritos sodas. No need to drink on an empty stomach — just grab a bite from one of the food booths hosted by local restaurants or gourmet food trucks that will be driving in for the occasion. Take a piece of the festival home with you by bidding on items and experiences (like tours and tastings) offered in the silent auction. Clearly there’s more than just wine at the Ojai Wine Festival, which is why the event is one of the hottest happenings of summer. Four hours of fun, all in the service of a good cause (the Rotary Club of Ojai West puts it on, raising to date over $1 million for its many charitable programs). Where’s our glass?

THE ART AND TIME OF EDOUARD MANET WITH KATHERINE ZORASTER | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Part of the Fifty and Better Summer Lecture Series. Edouard Manet is an important transitional figure between the art of Realism and Impressionism. Although he is now viewed as a crucial and influential figure in the history of Modernism, at the time, much of his art was seen with controversy and derision. This lecture will look at his art, the controversy associated with it, and how he both influenced and was influenced by Impressionism. $10, or bundle all June lectures for $54, or bundle the whole summer series for $140. www.callutheran.edu/centers/ lifelong-learning/fifty-better/lecture-series.html. THE DUKE | 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. In 1961, a taxi driver stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. ARIES
(March 21-April 19):
“The whole point for me is to change as much as possible,” says Aries actor Keira Knightley. What?! Is she serious? Her number one aspiration is to keep transforming and transforming and transforming? I guess I believe her. It’s not an entirely unexpected manifesto coming from an Aries person. But I must say: Her extra bold approach to life requires maximum resilience and resourcefulness. If you think that such an attitude might be fun to try, the coming weeks will be one of the best times ever to experiment.
TAURUS
(April 20-May 20):
Taurus poet May Sarton relished “the sacramentalization of the ordinary.” What a wonderfully Taurean attitude! There is no sign of the zodiac better able than you Bulls to find holiness in mundane events and to evoke divine joy from simple pleasures. I predict this specialty of yours will bloom in its full magnificence during the coming weeks. You will be even more skillful than usual in expressing it, and the people you encounter will derive exceptional benefits from your superpower.
GEMINI
(May 21-June 20):
Here’s a message I hope you will deliver to the Universe sometime soon: “Dear Life: I declare myself open and ready to receive miracles, uplifting news, fun breakthroughs, smart love, and unexpected blessings. I hope to be able to give my special gifts in new and imaginative ways. I am also eager for useful tips on how to express my dark side with beauty and grace. One more perk I hope you will provide, dear Life: Teach me how to be buoyantly creative and sensitively aggressive in asking for exactly what I need.”
CANCER
(June 21-July 22):
In August 2021, a Canadian man named Jerry Knott bought a ticket for a lottery. He stuffed it in his wallet and lost track of it. Two months later, he found it again and checked to see its status. Surprise! It was a winner. His prize was $20 million. I propose we make him your role model for now, my fellow Crabs. Let’s all be alert for assets we may have forgotten and neglected. Let’s be on the lookout for potentially valuable resources that are ripe for our attention. More info on Knott: tinyurl. com/RememberToCheck
LEO
(July 23-Aug. 22):
Hundreds of years ago, people in parts of Old Europe felt anxiety about the Summer Solstice. The sun reached its highest point in the sky at that time, and from then on would descend, bringing shorter and shorter days with less and less light. Apprehensive souls staged an antidote: the festival of Midsummer. They burned great bonfires all through the night. They stayed awake till morning, partying and dancing and having sex. Author Jeanette Winterson expresses appreciation for this holiday. “Call it a wild perversity or a wild optimism,” she writes, “but our ancestors were right to celebrate what they feared.” Winterson fantasizes about creating a comparable ceremony for her fears: “a ritual burning of what is coward in me, what is lost in me. Let the light in before it is too late.” I invite you to do something like this yourself, Leo.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):
Virgo author Elizabeth McCracken says, “I don’t dream of someone who understands me immediately, who seems to have known me my entire life.” What’s more meaningful to her is an ally who is curious, who has “a willingness for research.” She continues, “I want someone keen to learn my own strange organization, amazed at what’s revealed; someone who asks, ‘and then what, and then what?’” I hope you will enjoy at least one connection like that in the coming months, Virgo. I expect and predict it. Make it your specialty!
LIBRA
(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):
Libran author Stig Dagerman said that when he was sad as a child, his mother kissed him until his mood lightened. When he was older and sad, his mama said, “Sit down at your desk and write a letter to yourself. A long and beautiful letter.” This would be a good task
for you right now, Libra. Whatever mood you are in, I invite you to write a long and beautiful letter to yourself. I further recommend that you carry out the same ritual once every six weeks for the next nine months. This will be a phase of your life when it’s extra crucial that you express soulful tenderness toward your deep self on a regular basis. You may be amazed at how inspirational and transformative these communications will be.
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):
Sometimes, the arrival of a peculiar event in your life is a good sign. It may mean that Fate has sent an intervention to disrupt a boring phase of inertia or a habit-bound grind. An unexpected twist in the plot may signal a divine refreshment. It could be a favorable omen announcing a helpful prod that’s different from what you imagined you needed. I suspect that an experience or two fitting this description will soon materialize in your life story. Be alert for them. Promise yourself you’ll be receptive to their unexpected directives.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):
Sagittarius author Edna O’Brien long ago shed the strict Catholic faith in which she was raised. But she still harbors spiritual feelings colored by her tradition. She says, “Ideally, I’d like to spend two evenings a week talking to [novelist] Marcel Proust and another conversing with the Holy Ghost.” I suspect a similar balance of influences will be healthy for you in the days ahead, Sagittarius. My advice is to connect with an inspiration you drew sustenance from while growing up. Spend time equal time consorting with deep-feeling smart people who will stimulate you to rearrange the contents of your rational mind.
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):
I’ve composed a message for you to deliver to your best allies. It will help you be clear about the nature of your energy exchanges. Say something like this: “I promise to act primarily out of love in my dealings with you, and I ask you to do the same with me. Please don’t help me or give me things unless they are offered with deep affection. Let’s phase out favors that are bestowed out of obligation or with the expectation of a favor in return. Let’s purge manipulativeness from our dynamic. Let’s agree to provide each other with unconditional support.”
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):
Author Lauren Collins tells us, “Bilinguals overwhelmingly report that they feel like different people in different languages. It is often assumed that the mother tongue is the language of the true self. But if first languages are reservoirs of emotion, second languages can be rivers undammed, freeing their speakers to ride different currents.” I bring these thoughts to your attention, Aquarius, because the next 12 months will be an excellent time for you to begin becoming bilingual or else to deepen your fluency in a second language. And if you’re not ready to do that, I encourage you to enhance your language skills in other ways. Build your vocabulary, for instance. Practice speaking more precisely. Say what you mean and mean what you say 95 percent of the time. Life will bring you good fortune if you boost your respect for the way you use language.
PISCES
(Feb. 19-March 20):
Piscean-born Robert Evans has been an amateur astronomer since he was 18. Though he has never been paid for his work and has mostly used modest telescopes, he holds the world record for discovering supernovas—42. These days, at age 85, he’s still scanning the skies with a 12-inch telescope on his back porch. Let’s make him your role model for the coming months. I have faith you can achieve meaningful success even if you are a layperson without massive funding. PS: Keep in mind that “amateur” comes from the Latin word for “lover.” Here’s the dictionary’s main definition: “a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.” Homework: What is still worth waiting for? What is no longer worth waiting for? Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology.com

Mission to serve since1912. Dignity Health – St. John’s Regional Medical Center opened its doors in June of 1912. The vision of its foundresses, the Sisters of Mercy, was to establish a hospital that would meet the health care needs of our community through exceptional care delivered with compassion. For 110 years, St. John’s Regional Medical Center has grown with the community and expanded to encompass St. John’s Hospital Camarillo. Together, our hospitals have carried on the Sisters’ legacy of healing—both inside our hospitals and out in the community.
