tephen Peck wanted nothing to do with the military after his harrowing experiences as a U.S. Marine fighting in the Vietnam War. Instead, after the war, Peck became a documentary filmmaker. He found himself drawn, however, to telling stories about people who faced financial hardships and mental health challenges after serving in the military. “Those experiences and those memories stay with you,” Peck told the Ventura County Reporter. He went on to explain that while making films about veterans, he learned that by the early 1990s over 30% of homeless men were veterans. Inspired to help other veterans, he switched careers to become an advocate for them. Peck now serves as president and CEO of U.S. Vets, a charity providing housing and services to homeless veterans nationwide. Today, U.S. Vets helps over 20,000 veterans every year with services including mental health treatment and career counseling, and has developed thousands of supportive housing units. The charity has not yet established itself in Ventura County, but that’s now changing. On Wednesday, June 15, Peck looked over a construction site in East Ventura during a groundbreaking ceremony for Ventura Springs, a new supportive housing project for veterans which has been many years in the making. “It really is gratifying to see this come to fruition,” Peck said. The project is rising on 10 acres south of Telephone Road and west of Wells Road, next door to a California Department of Veterans Affairs home that was originally planned for a major expansion on the vacant site where the new Ventura Springs facility will be located. Renderings of the Ventura Springs plans show two- and three-story buildings surrounding courtyards meant to foster a sense of community. There will be 120 units with up to three bedrooms to accommodate formerly homeless veterans as well as low-income veterans and their families, along with two additional units for managers. A community garden, fitness center and computer lab are also planned. When Ventura’s state veteran’s facility was completed in 2009 with 60

beds, it was envisioned as just a start of a larger project that would serve several hundred veterans by 2020, officials explained. But the state’s expansion plans never materialized. “It got reduced in scope,” said Ventura County Supervisor Matt La Vere, who previously served on the Ventura City Council. “A lot of that money got reallocated to L.A. So it ended up being a 60-bed facility and we realized there was much more need locally than 60 beds.” Without commitment from state officials to complete the project, Ventura city leaders took the lead to forge a vision of a veteran’s facility serving not just elderly veterans, but also younger ones living on the streets and low-income veterans with families to support. Land that was donated by the city to the state for the expansion ended up reverting back to city ownership, and at the end of a competitive process, U.S. Vets and another charity co-developer, A Community of Friends, were selected as partners to build and operate the facility. The $69 million project is funded by a variety of sources including city, state and federal money, tax credits, and private donations from companies including Home Depot and Bank of America. La Vere told the VCReporter that he was happy to be a part of the groundbreaking event. “This is something that we’ve been told for many years is a critical need,” he said, noting the mental health chal-

lenges facing many veterans. “The bottom line is that we have veterans on our streets who shouldn’t be there. This is going to help get us to everyone’s goal of having zero veterans on the streets in Ventura County.” Ventura Mayor Sofia Rubalcava told the VCReporter that people who live at Ventura Springs will benefit greatly. “I think this facility is going to give people a lot of hope. Hope to be able to do something different in their life, to have stable housing, and not just housing, but to have all the supportive services that can be provided. I think it will be a huge step forward,” she said. Rubalcava is also happy that Ventura Springs will provide housing and help for veterans of all ages as well as their families, in contrast to the state facility next door, which is focused on elderly veterans. “I think it’s going to give people a really good foundation to be able to do whatever else they want to do, whether it’s go to school or get a better job,” said the mayor. “And for the kids who are going to be part of this community, I think it’s going to allow them to feel how much the community cares about them and invests in them. So I think it’s going to be a springboard for a lot of good things to come.” The project is expected to be completed around the end of 2023. usvets.org www.calvet.ca.gov/VetHomes/ Pages/Ventura.aspx

In Brief Emergency drought regulations in Ventura Ventura residents are being asked to reduce water use by 20% in response to emergency drought regulations adopted by state officials. Mandatory outdoor watering restrictions that have recently gone into effect in other cities including Oxnard and Camarillo are not yet being imposed in Ventura, but Ventura city officials said it could become necessary if voluntary efforts don’t save enough water. Officials said the city is doing its part by turning off irrigation for non-functional turf at all facilities and reducing watering times at parks. Ventura does not have a way to tap into the state water system, although that connection is being developed, and relies on local water supplies from Lake Casitas, the Ventura River and local groundwater basins. www.cityofventura.ca.gov CLU gets $3.6M Upward Bound grant Low income and potential firstgeneration college students are getting a helping hand from California Lutheran University thanks to a $3.6 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The TRIO Traditional Upward Bound Program will serve 89 high school students from Oxnard and another 60 from Hawthorne and Lawndale. The program includes tutoring, college tours and parent workshops to help prepare students for the college application process. Participants also take part in a sixweek residential program on the university’s Thousand Oaks campus, where they take rigorous classes in subjects including math, literature, foreign language and music, campus officials said. The program has been serving local students since 1980 and the award this year was the largest the university has ever received. University officials say 98% of participating students have gone on to college in recent years with 93% completing the classes needed to qualify for the University of California. www.callutheran.edu/offices/ upward-bound July 9 emergency preparedness talk in T.O. The city of Thousand Oaks is hosting a free emergency preparedness event on Saturday, July 9, to help residents prepare for local emergencies including wildfires and earthquakes, and also to cope with impacts of the ongoing drought. Discussions will address the challenges posed by drought restrictions on watering plants and options for installing drought-tolerant and fire-resistant plants around homes. “The historic drought conditions we are facing require that each one of us take action to safeguard our properties and reduce our water consumption,” said co-host Jacqui Irwin, who represents Thousand Oaks in the California State

Grasty also helped start Saturday Metrolink train service from Ventura County to Downtown Los Angeles and a program offering free bus rides for college students, according to a VCTC news release. www.goventura.org Firefighters honored The Ventura Fire Department and Ventura Fire Foundation recognized over 60 firefighters and other employees at an awards and promotion ceremony held on Friday, June 10. Engineer Eric Craddock oversees the fire department’s training grounds and was named Firefighter of the Year. Firefighter-Paramedic James Kenney won the Greg Andrews Safety Award for his work developing plans to respond to emergencies at large commercial complexes. The Nancy Merman Paramedic of the Year honor was presented to Engineer Kyle Tong. Honors for exceptional duty in life saving service were given to Captain Mark Nielsen and Firefighter-Paramedic William Nackers. And a civilian employee, Danielle Motherspaw, was recognized as the Fire Prevention Employee of the Year for “exceptional service with a smile.” Fire Chief David Endaya said he’s proud of all the honorees. “The city is blessed to have so many exemplary firefighters and staff who go above and beyond to serve our community. They provide all-hazards emergency response, perform life-saving actions each day, and oftentimes provide care and compassion to people on their toughest day.”

by Alex Wilson

rwilson@timespublication.com ob Oedy has enjoyed spending time with his family at Ventura Harbor Village for many years, dining on fish and chips and flying kites on the windswept shoreline nearby. But the main attraction for Oedy — one might even say an obsession — was a sleek, 112-foot vessel with a dramatically pointed bow that had clearly seen better days, and in his mind looked like it would be more at home hosting celebrities on 12 —

the French Riviera than languishing at a Ventura boatyard. “It was like ‘Whoa, that’s so neat.’ It just stuck out in my mind, and I just fell in love with it the second I saw it. That is the most amazing watercraft I’ve ever seen,” Oedy said about the navy blue and white ship with an ornate crest emblazoned with the name Gentry Eagle. Oedy was not alone in wondering about the history of Gentry Eagle, which was docked in a prominent location at Ventura Harbor Boatyard near the pedestrian promenade. Many people were intrigued by the mystery over the last eight years as Gentry Eagle sat stationary and appeared to fall farther and farther into

Record-setting Gentry Eagle gets dismantled at Ventura Harbor disrepair, frequented mostly by seagulls rather than seafarers. The vessel’s admirers were saddened to see it hauled out of the water in March before meeting its fate with a wrecking crew last month. As Gentry Eagle was torn to shreds by heavy machinery, people walking along the promenade stopped in their tracks and gasped with disbelief. They were witnessing a piece of maritime history fade into the sunset. “I actually went to bed just so depressed,” Oedy said. “One of my dreams was to restore that thing. I didn’t know how I was going to do it. I told my wife many times, ‘If I hit the lottery, I’m buying that boat.’”

A record-setting racer . . . and its legendary owner While many admired the vessel that sat for years at a dock at Ventura Harbor, few knew the real story behind Gentry Eagle. But Oedy was determined to find out. His research turned up some fascinating information, which inspired him to launch fan pages for Gentry Eagle on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. One of the most fascinating facts was that this decaying vessel had, in its heyday, broken the transatlantic crossing world record. The legend of Gentry Eagle started with a dream of one of the most storied offshore powerboat racers in history, three-time world

champion Tom Gentry. Gentry had earned a fortune developing homes, marinas and shopping centers in Northern California cities including Concord and San Ramon before switching gears to build homes in Hawaii. But he was best remembered for his love of building and racing powerboats. According to his 1998 obituary in the New York Times, he was the Union of International Motorboating’s world champion in 1976 and 1987, and received the organization’s gold medal of honor in 1993. John Carbonell, then president of Super Boat International, praised Gentry’s “innovations in engines and outdrives.” Gentry set out to win one of the world’s most challenging maritime honors, the Blue Riband, bestowed for the fastest passage across the Atlantic Ocean. It was an honor held by powerful ocean liners like the legendary SS United States. According to Wikipedia, flamboyant British music and airline tycoon Richard Branson took the record from the SS United States in 1986 with a specially built vessel, Virgin Atlantic Challenger. Gentry aimed to bring the honor back to America, and succeeded with Gentry Eagle. While it looked luxurious from the outside, Gentry Eagle’s real secret was in the engine room, where two turbo-diesel engines coupled with a 4,500-horsepower turbine engine were once capable of generating a total of 11,500 horsepower. Those engines powered the vessel on a record-setting trip, earning the Gentry Eagle the Blue Riband in 1989. Sadly, Gentry was critically injured when his catamaran flipped over during the Key West World Offshore Championship in 1994. The accident left him hospitalized and in a coma, from which he never fully recovered. He died in Honolulu about four years later at age 67.

Gentry also had a storied career in offshore powerboat racing and holds three world championships just like his dad, he said. “I was there when the keel was laid in England, so it’s a little more special to me,” Gentry said. He explained that parts of the Gentry Eagle were sourced from around the world, with the diesel engines shipped from Germany, the turbine engine built in the U.S. and electronics from Japan. The ship’s crew first attempted to break the transatlantic crossing record in 1988, but a heavy storm damaged Gentry Eagle and forced a detour for repairs. One year later, they tried again and were successful. Gentry recalled making the voyage in 62 hours and seven minutes, with an average speed of 73 miles per hour, about 23% faster than Branson’s record-setting effort. The adventure of setting the world record was something Gentry will never forget. It was certainly no pleasure cruise, with fog, rain and churning seas. “One of the descriptions I came up with is if you can imagine putting yourself into a box at the top of a set of stairs, throw in a gallon of diesel and a boom box on high, and throw yourself down the stairs for hours on end. That kind of would describe it at times,” he said. According to Gentry, the Gentry Eagle set several more records, including one for traveling the farthest in 24 hours.

Father and son set a record together

After Gentry Eagle broke the transatlantic crossing record, it was converted into a luxury yacht and the family sailed it to destinations including the Mediterranean

Gentry Eagle was passed down to Gentry’s son Norman, who still runs the family business from Hawaii, and spoke with the Ven-

and Alaska. But finding a permanent home proved tricky. Norman Gentry said the ship required repairs few boatyards were able to perform, due to its size and unique configuration. Eventually Ventura Harbor Boatyard was willing to help, and it was serviced there a few times starting about 15 years ago, he said. After he inherited the ship, Gentry put it on the market for around $3 million. But the ship’s storied past could not overcome the challenges of owning such a vessel, which included outdated electrical systems, so it proved impossible to find a buyer. Gentry said he finally mothballed the ship at the Ventura Harbor dock in 2014. “For comparison, just imagine owning a Formula One race car. It’s not for everyone,” he said. “It can be intimidating. It would take a special kind of buyer.”

“Nothing lasts forever”

Last year, Gentry learned the Ventura dock would no longer be available because there were new plans for the space, and he scram-

bled to find a way to find someone able to take on the challenge of owning Gentry Eagle. Gentry related that there was interest from a reality TV producer with a vision for making a show about restoring Gentry Eagle to its former glory, but that the plan fell through. Efforts to donate the boat to various museums also received some interest but also failed for what he called a variety of reasons. “I put a lot of time and effort into trying to find her a home but it just didn’t come to be,” said Gentry. It turned out that the only practical course was to dismantle the boat, said Gentry, who only had praise for the people at the Ventura Harbor Boatyard who helped care for Gentry Eagle over the years. The boatyard hired Ventura-based Standard Demolition to take the ship apart safely. As for seeing Gentry Eagle meet its demise, Gentry said it’s sad, but there were no other viable options. “As a mariner, boats just hold a special place in your heart if you will. So is it tough? Yes. But nothing lasts forever,” Gentry said. “Sometimes it’s just time.” June 23, 2022 —

All hail the Bard! The Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary with As You Like It, Macbeth by Emily Dodi

A

fter a two-year absence, the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival is back, and with upgraded facilities and a brilliant cast and crew, it promises to be better than ever. It also happens to be the festival’s 25th anniversary, so there is much to celebrate this summer under the stars at California Lutheran University’s Kingsmen Park. This season’s offerings are As You Like It (July 1-3, 8-10 and 15-17) and Macbeth (July 23-24, 28-31 and August 5-7), as well as a special “pay what you will” family-friendly benefit performance by Puke and Snot, “the longest running two-man comedy act in the U.S. Renaissance Festival history” (July 22). “Wild, romantic” As You Like It The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company, the professional theater company of CLU, chose Shakespeare’s popular comedy featuring a banished heroine as “the perfect way to joyously return from our own exile.” Set in the magical Forest of Arden, As You Like It is a “wild, romantic tale that plays with gender roles, politics and nature.” It also features Rosalind, “one of the bard’s most iconic female characters.” Chloe Baldwin, a former Kingsmen Festival apprentice and self-proclaimed “world’s nicest badass,”

plays Rosalind. According to Stephanie Dykes in Picture This Post, “Baldwin tackles the role of Rosalind aggressively and the result is astounding. She plays both sides of the gender role coin, both with confidence and hilarity, and shows the illusion of these imagined societal roles.” As You Like It is directed by the award-winning Warren C. Bowles, who is the festival’s first Black director. Bowles’s 40-year career as a director, actor and playwright includes being a longtime member of the Mixed Blood Theatre Company in Minneapolis, which is noted for its use of theater to “disrupt injustices, advance equity, build community and inspire people to create ripple effects of social change.” Bowles represents what the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company says is its reexamination of how it addresses systemic racism, “not only the diversity of its casting but also who is in control of that casting.” “Our company committed itself over the last two years to do better. Warren helped us achieve diverse casting in both plays we are presenting this season,” said company founder and artistic director Michael J. Arndt. For Shake-

There is a meaningful fall from grace that happens, he explains, and if you ignore that, “you lose the tragedy.” “We have the ideal cast. We have been thinking about this for three years,” Elliott says. Matt Orduña, who was last seen as Othello on the Kingsmen stage, plays Macbeth. “Matt combines gravitas, humanity and heart. He was always my first choice.” Elliott describes watchFall from grace with Macbeth ing Orduña in rehearsals: “Oh my Brett Elliott, the director of MacGod, he’s so scary. And then he’s a beth, or “The Scottish Play” as it is teddy bear. He’s perfect for the role called in theatrical circles due to an because he’s both.” age-old superstition, concurs. “It is Caroline Kinsolving, a veteran the draw of Shakespeare’s language. Kingsmen actor who played CathThe poetry is unmatched.” Elliott erine to Elliott’s Petruchio in the adds that “the humanity of Shakecompany’s previous production of speare’s characters is so identifiThe Taming of the Shrew, plays Lady able.” They are flawed, complex and Macbeth. “I coaxed her back from deliciously inconsistent. That made New York to play the role,” Elliott casting the roles of Macbeth and exclaims. “Caroline is known for her Lady Macbeth especially important strength and presence and tremento Elliott because he does not see dous humanity. She brings power them as one-dimensional villains. and force to the role.” A Kinsgmen veteran in his own right, Elliott has been an actor and director with the company “since the beginning” and is now the company’s assistant artistic director. He explains what coming back this year means to him and the rest of the company. “It’s like coming home. I got really emotional coming to rehearsal. How important and meaningful this is. It’s a part of who I am.” Elliott adds that this production of Macbeth is unlike anything the Benjamin White and Chloe Baldwin as Kingsmen have done Orlando and Rosalind in As You Like It. before. While it is still speare’s beloved comedy As You Like It, Bowles is trusting the beauty of the language and the timeless relevance of the story to captivate audiences. “I hope audiences appreciate the simplicity with which we tell our story,” Bowles said. “We trust the play and Shakespeare’s skill as a storyteller.”

“a masterful tale of ambition,” filled with “sweeping battles, sardonic wit, occult mysteries and sublime poetry,” Elliott delights in sharing that this production of the Scottish Play takes place in what “feels like an ancient world where it makes sense that magic is real, and war is fought with broadswords.” Making it all possible, Elliott says, are “all the all-stars” of the company. In addition to the stellar cast, the crew includes scenic designer Erik Diaz, lighting designer Leigh Allen, costume designer Chris Allen and composer Christopher Hoag, who wrote original music for the production. Diaz, Hoag and Leigh Allen bring As You Like It to life as well, with Noelle Raffy-Porter lending her talents as costume designer for the comedy. It is a joy to say that the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival is back. Back are the summer nights filled with the poetry and pageantry of Shakespeare. Back are the sounds of laughter and wonder—and the clinking of wine glasses. Back are the pre-show talks, albeit they will be adjusted to meet COVID safety regulations. All in all, as Elliott projects, it will be the best year yet, and not just because there will be “more tech and more lights.” For everyone who has ever felt that the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival is one of the best things about summer, it will feel like coming home. As You Like It, July 1-17;Macbeth, July 23-Aug. 7; Puke and Snot, July 22, all at Kingsmen Park, California Lutheran University, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks. efore Andria’s even opens its doors at 11 a.m., a line usually has already formed. Tourists visiting Ventura Harbor from far and wide come in search of clam chowder (possibly in that sourdough bowl) and fish and chips — those classics that seem like a must on any trip to the coast. But out-of-towners aren’t the only ones queueing up: Just as many locals are happy to wait their turn to place an order at the counter, because in these parts, everyone knows that Andria’s is one of the best places, period, for fresh seafood. In fact, its been a local favorite since opening at Ventura Harbor in 1982 (its sister location in Santa Barbara was established in 1974). The restaurant and fish market recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, and during a May 12 ceremony, founder Michael J. Wagner and daughter Andria Bargiel (yes, the place is named after her) were honored with a Certificate of Recognition from a representative of California State Assemblymember Steve Bennett. Government accolades and history aside, Andria’s is the epitome of good eats harvested from the sea (plus a few chicken items, because there’s always someone who can’t or won’t eat seafood). Grilled, steamed or deep fried, dipped in batter or blackened, served on a bun, over greens or simply on top of a big pile of French fries, there are few places that boast the variety of fish preparations that have made Andria’s famous . . . each and every one delicious. Truthfully, when I’m hankering for fish and chips, Andria’s is the first place that comes to mind. The original style is my go-to, and in all these years it has never been less than perfect: large pieces of fresh fish battered and deep fried to a super-crisp golden brown, tons of perfectly fried potatoes, and a generous portion to boot (I rarely can finish the platter). But you can mix it up with (drum roll, please): Alaskan cod, calamari, clam strips, halibut, oysters, scallops, shrimp (medium or popcorn sized) or a mix of them in the Captain’s Combo.

Andria’s classic fish and chips is always a solid bet.

Mahi mahi fish burger topped with lettuce, tomato and lots of cheese, plus fries. When I want something lighter, I look to the many grilled options, which include ahi, halibut, mahi mahi, salmon, seabass, shrimp, snapper, swordfish, thresher shark ad yellowtail — served with salad, rice, bread and your choice of side. Or a rich bowl of cioppino, which is so wonderful on a foggy day. I also love the steamed clams, with a sauce so good you’ll want plenty of bread on hand for mopping it up. I’ve never had the stir fry, but based on everything else I’ve sampled, I’d almost guarantee it’s just as good. Yes, that’s a LOT of seafood — which is exactly why everyone loves Andria’s. All food is made fresh to order, so some of these items can take 20 minutes or longer to prepare, but the quality is well worth the wait if you have the time. But if you’re in a rush, consider one of the fish burgers, which can be grilled or fried. I’m partial to mahi mahi grilled with Cajun seasoning, but the Krabby Cake

and ahi burgers are great, too. One word of caution: Andria’s loads on the cheese, so consider asking for it without if that’s not your thing. If Andria’s was just a hole in the wall, it would still be worth it for the quality and variety — and certainly plenty of people get their food to go to enjoy at home or possibly on their boats. But the restaurant has an enormous space, with ample seating inside and out. It’s an order-at-the-counter, seat-and-serve-yourself kind of place…nothing fancy here…but that makes it the perfect postbeach, -surf or -boating pitstop. And of course, the seafood market is top notch, so you can always get something to bring home and cook yourself. After all these years, Andria’s hasn’t lost its touch, which is why the crowds keep showing up decade after decade. Because freshness and quality never go out of style . . . and Andria’s never fails to deliver.

Unsearched U.S. Coin Bags full of Morgan Silver Dollars go to CA residents State zip codes used to determine who gets valuable Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t over 100 years ago and sealed away in three pound U.S. Coin Bags that have never been searched Who gets the Morgan Silver Dollars: Only CA residents who find their zip code listed on the Distribution List below are getting the Gov’t issued coins. If you find your zip code listed below call: 1-800-867-0152 UMD502 “The vaults at Federated Mint a re going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for Federated Mint. T h at ’s b e c au s e a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, some worth up to 100 times their face value, means unsearched Bank Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As U.S. C oi n a nd C u r renc y Director for Federated M i nt I get pa id to in for m a nd educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars to the general public – I’m being asked, how much a re the u nsea rched

■ UNSEARCHED: Each Bank Bag contains 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars. Each coin is verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above and the dates and mint marks are never searched by Federated Mint to determine collector value.

Bank Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always f luctuate and there are never any g ua ra nt ees , but we do k now this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars and just one coin alone, could be worth $40 $325 in collector value according to The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins. So, there’s no telling what you’ll find until you sea rch th rough all the coins. But you better believe at just $2900 these unsearched Bank Bags are a steal si nce ever yone who misses the deadline must pay $4000 for each bag,” said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely s e en Mor ga n Si lver Dolla rs some dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousa nds of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very go o d or a b ove , t he dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector va lues and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Coi n Cla i m Hotl i ne b efor e t he 4 8 -hou r

deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $4000 for residents who miss the deadline, but for those California residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Bank Bag fee is just $2900 as long as they call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsea rched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 AM this morning. That’s because each unsearched Bank Bag is loaded with nothing but U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. “With all these collectible U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars up for grabs we’re going to do our best to answer all the calls,” said Lynne. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the Unsearched Bank Bags. That means U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication can claim the unsearched bags of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars found inside. Just be sure to call b efor e t he 4 8 -hou r deadline ends. ■

■ SNEAK PEAK INSIDE VAULT: The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at 8:30 AM this morning when the vaults open for California residents to claim unsearched Bank Bags. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the Gov’t over 100 years ago could be worth someday. That’s because each Bank Bag contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. And here’s the best part. After the deadline each Bank Bag fee is set for $4000, but California residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication and beat the deadline cover just $2900 which is a real steal for these unsearched Bank Bags. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

Aries actor Marilu Henner has an unusual condition: hyperthymesia. She can remember in detail voluminous amounts of past events. For instance, she vividly recalls being at the Superdome in New Orleans on September 15, 1978, where she and her actor friends watched a boxing match between Leon Spinks and Muhammad Ali. You probably don’t have hyperthymesia, Aries, but I invite you to approximate that state. Now is an excellent time to engage in a leisurely review of your life story, beginning with your earliest memories. Why? It will strengthen your foundation, nurture your roots, and bolster your stability.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Poet Elizabeth Bishop noted that many of us are “addicted to the gigantic.” We live in a “mostly huge and roaring, glaring world.” As a counterbalance, she wished for “small works of art, short poems, short pieces of music, intimate, low-voiced, and delicate things.” That’s the spirit I recommend to you in the coming weeks, Taurus. You will be best served by consorting with subtle, unostentatious, elegant influences. Enjoy graceful details and quiet wonders and understated truths.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

In the coming weeks, you will need even more human touch than usual. Your mental, physical, and spiritual health REQUIRE you to have your skin in contact with people who care for you and are eager to feel their skin against yours. A Tumblr blogger named Friend-Suggestion sets the tone for the mood I hope you cultivate. They write, “I love! human contact! with! my friends! So put your leg over mine! Let our knees touch! Hold my hand! Make excuses to feel my arm by drawing pictures on my skin! Stand close to me! Lean into my space! Slow dance super close to me! Hold my face in your hands or kick my foot to get my attention! Put your arm around me when we’re standing or sitting around! Hug me from behind at random times!”

CANCER

(June 21-July 22):

Author John Banville wrote what might serve as a manifesto for some of us Crabs: “To be concealed, protected, guarded: that is all I have ever truly wanted. To burrow down into a place of womby warmth and cower there, hidden from the sky’s indifferent gaze and the harsh air’s damagings. The past is such a retreat for me. I go there eagerly, shaking off the cold present and the colder future.” If you are a Crab who feels a kinship with Banville’s approach, I ask you to refrain from indulging in it during the coming months. You’re in a phase of your long-term astrological cycle when your destiny is calling you to be bolder and brighter than usual, more visible and influential, louder and stronger.

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

“We wish to make rage into a fire that cooks things rather than a fire of conflagration,” writes author Clarissa Pinkola Estés. That’s good advice for you right now. Your anger can serve you, but only if you use it to gain clarity—not if you allow it to control or immobilize you. So here’s my counsel: Regard your wrath as a fertilizing fuel that helps deepen your understanding of what you’re angry about—and shows you how to engage in constructive actions that will liberate you from what is making you angry.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

Virgo author Jeanette Winterson was asked, “Do you fall in love often?” She replied, “Yes, often. With a view, with a book, with a dog, a cat, with numbers, with friends, with complete strangers, with nothing at all.” Even if you’re not usually as prone to infatuation and enchantment as Winterson, you could have many experiences like hers in the coming months. Is that a state you would enjoy? I encourage you to welcome it. Your capacity to be fascinated and captivated will be at a peak. Your inclination to trust your attractions will be extra high. Sounds fun!

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

Libran lexicographer Daniel Webster (1758–1843) worked hard to create his dictionary, and it became

by rob brezsny

highly influential in American culture. He spent over 26 years perfecting it. To make sure he could properly analyze the etymologies, he learned 28 languages. He wrote definitions for 70,000 words, including 12,000 that had never been included in a published dictionary. I trust you are well underway with your own Webster-like project, Libra. This entire year is an excellent time to devote yourself with exacting diligence to a monumental labor of love. If you haven’t started it yet, launch now. If it’s already in motion, kick it into a higher gear.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

“Shouldn’t the distance between impossible and improbable be widened?” asks poet Luke Johnson. I agree that it should, and I nominate you to do the job. In my astrological view, you now have the power to make progress in accomplishing goals that some people may regard as unlikely, fantastical, and absurdly challenging. (Don’t listen to them!) I’m not necessarily saying you will always succeed in wrangling the remote possibilities into practical realities. But you might. And even if you’re only partially victorious, you will learn key lessons that bolster your abilities to harness future amazements.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Sagittarian novelist George Eliot wrote, “It is very hard to say the exact truth, even about your own immediate feelings — much harder than to say something fine about them which is not the exact truth.” I believe you will be exempt from this rule during the next seven weeks. You will be able to speak with lucid candor about your feelings — maybe more so than you’ve been able to in a long time. And that will serve you well as you take advantage of the opportunity that life is offering you: to deepen, clarify, and refine your intimate relationships.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Author bell hooks (who didn’t capitalize her name) expressed advice I recommend for you. She said, “Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.” As you enter a phase of potential renewal for your close relationships, you’ll be wise to deepen your commitment to self-sufficiency and self-care. You might be amazed at how profoundly that enriches intimacy. Here are two more helpful gems from bell hooks: “You can never love anybody if you are unable to love yourself” and “Do not expect to receive the love from someone else you do not give yourself.”

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

In April 2005, a 64-year-old Korean woman named Cha Sa-soon made her first attempt to get her driver’s license. She failed. In fairness to her, the written test wasn’t easy. It required an understanding of car maintenance. After that initial flop, she returned to take the test five days a week for three years — and was always unsuccessful. She persevered, however. Five years later, she passed the test and received her license. It was her 960th try. Let’s make her your role model for the foreseeable future. I doubt you’ll have to persist as long as she did, but you’ll be wise to cultivate maximum doggedness and diligence.

PISCES

OFFER ENDS: 6/30/22

(Feb. 19-March 20):

In the eighth century, Chinese poet Du Fu gave a batch of freshly written poems to his friend and colleague, the poet Li Bai. “Thank you for letting me read your new poems,” Li Bai later wrote to Du Fu. “It was like being alive twice.” I foresee you enjoying a comparable grace period in the coming weeks, Pisces: a time when your joie de vivre could be double its usual intensity. How should you respond to this gift from the Fates? Get twice as much work done? Start work on a future masterpiece? Become a beacon of inspiration to everyone you encounter? Sure, if that’s what you want to do. And you could also simply enjoy every detail of your daily rhythm with supreme, sublime delight. Homework: Tell a story that imagines what you will be like a year from now. Newsletter: FreeWillAstrology.com June 23, 2022 —
