Congress passes bill to name Oxnard post office after civil rights leader John R. Hatcher III by Alex Wilson awilson@timespublications.com

ohn R. Hatcher III spent his life fighting for civil rights. He was the leader of the Ventura County Chapter of the NAACP for nearly 40 years, and rose to national prominence in the organization. His legacy could soon be enshrined for future generations under a plan to name downtown Oxnard’s U.S. Post Office in his honor. HR 5659, the bill to name the building at 1961 North C Street the “John R. Hatcher, III Post Office Building,” was introduced by Congressmember Julia Brownley (Dist. 26). HR 5659 was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on July 14, by a vote of 348 to 63. The bill must still go before the U.S. Senate and be signed by President Joe Biden. “John was a fearless advocate for the people and the community that he loved so deeply,” Brownley said. “He was integral to the empowerment of Black Americans throughout Ventura County through the numerous organizations he founded and established, which continue to carry on his legacy of social justice and racial equality to this day.”

Hatcher family legacy

In some ways, the July 14 vote by the U.S. House of Representatives supporting Brownley’s bill also honors Hatcher’s father, who played a role in the start of the civil rights movement, and his daughter Regina K. Hatcher-Crawford, who took the reins of the local NAACP chapter after he passed away in 2017. Hatcher-Crawford told the Ventura County Reporter that her father was born in 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama, under discriminatory Jim Crow laws. Her grandfather John R. Hatcher II was a leader of the first NAACP chapter formed there, she said, and there’s even a street in Birmingham named after her grandfather. “It was kind of the birthplace of the civil rights movement. And so he was credited for a lot of things that happened there in the community in Birmingham,” she said, adding that her grandfather held classes on what Black people should do if pulled over while driving, and also helped people register to vote. Hatcher-Crawford explained that under Jim Crow laws, Black people had to take an unfair test to become eligible to vote, and sometimes faced trick questions meant to trip 6—

them up. She recalls laughing with her father over what his dad taught him about answering the questions, when her father was almost old enough to vote. “My grandfather said, ‘Remember, if they ask you silly questions, you always give them a silly answer back.’ And so, my father said, the lady asked him ‘How many bubbles are in a bar of soap.’ And he said, ‘9,689, ma’am.’ ‘What was George Washington’s wife’s name?’ and he says ‘Mrs. Washington.’”

“We’re being heard as a community”

Hatcher served in the Air Force for 22 years. According to his daughter, the family moved every four years while he was on active duty, and she was born at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia. Another base he was stationed at was Oxnard Air Force Base, which was later converted into the Camarillo Airport. After leaving active duty, Hatcher worked as a civilian civil service employee with the Department of the Navy. Hatcher loved Oxnard and decided to make it his permanent home. Just like her father, Hatcher-Crawford was exposed to the civil rights movement from an early age. “My father took me to my first march when I was about five years old and it happened to be in Oxnard, and it was for the farmworkers in a Cesar Chavez group,” she recalled. “And so as I grew up, I understood that as a people of color, Blacks, we are sometimes treated unfairly. And so in order for us to get our equal share, as people now put it, you have to stand up for it.” Having the post office named in honor of her father will be a source of pride, she said. “For the Black community, for the community as a whole, for people who knew him and worked with him, it gives them ideas that we’re being heard as a community. Because too many times we see buildings named after others but not anyone that is Black. So actually in Ventura County, from my understanding, this will be the first federal building named after somebody locally. So it gives us an idea that we now have something that we can say that somebody we all know, that loved this community, is being recognized.”

represented Oxnard in the state legislature and that it’s an honor for her to pass the bill recognizing him by naming the post office after him. Brownley also admires Hatcher-Crawford for her continuing leadership. “She’s definitely a person who reaches out to me and I reach out to her and we’ve been to lots of different rallies together and she’s carrying on her father’s legacy,” Brownley said.

The Congressmember said she’s already spoken with U.S. Senator Alex Padilla about the importance of passing the bill in the Senate and sending it to the president’s desk for final approval. Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez (Dist. 5) worked as a legal aid attorney for many years and said she and Hatcher often asked each other for help on issues including housing and job discrimination. She

said that Hatcher’s caring personality helped him get things accomplished. “He was serious, but had a great sense of humor. Fantastic smile and a warm personality. He was a person who loved people. He did not hold grudges,” Ramirez recalled. “He was very strong in the values he held, and he was a very engaging and fun person to be with. But don’t ever let anybody think he would allow people to get away with injustice. He wasn’t just about African American people and their rights; he was about everybody’s rights, and he spoke up for it.” Ramirez said she’s looking forward to a ceremony officially renaming the post office and seeing his name on the building. “It will be a reminder to people about John’s legacy. Every day we will see it. Those who didn’t know him will get information and learn about what he did here in Oxnard and Ventura County. So it’s spectacular. Battle of the water conservation and waste reduction methods by David Goldstein

ost methods of reducing waste and conserving water complement each other, but sometimes, there can be only one.

Woody mulch vs. ﬁne compost as a top dressing

Mulch is a material applied to the garden surface, and compost is a product decomposed to a consistency like soil, but compost does not function well as mulch. Compost is better for adding nutrients and improving soil structure only if mixed into soil during planting. Shredded woody material is better if your garden is already in place, and you want a top dressing. Woody mulch conserves water by shading the ground it is spread upon, cutting soil temperatures, reducing evaporation, and suppressing weeds. Surface application of compost can also too easily become a bed for weed seeds, causing unwanted plants to suck up water intended for a planned landscape, according to

Dr. Ben Faber, a University of California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, based at the university’s Ventura office. This is not to say the compost itself likely has weed seeds. Dave Green, CEO at Agromin, emphasized, in the compost process, “Billions of microbes . . . consume the weed seeds (and) windrow temperatures reach over 130 degrees, killing . . . seeds.”

Zoysia plugs vs. Miniclover

On sales-oriented websites, retailers of these grass varieties document the ability of their products to stay greener longer, while using less water and requiring less mowing than other lawns. In these ways, both beat tall fescue. Tall fescue has long been standard for Ventura County lawns, according to Dr. Jim Downer, another University of California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor based at the university’s Ventura office. Miniclover wins, partly because planting Zoysia is a lifetime commitment. Many reviewers noted Zoysia’s invasive power, with one reviewer remarking that Zoysia

is “not just invasive – it’s downright hostile.” At least Miniclover can be easily replaced with a more drought-tolerant landscape when a homeowner no longer feels a need to pit their lawn against the biggest heavyweight in the conservation contest – our changing climate. Of course, a grass variety cannot really claim a green trophy; other landscapes conserve more, and watering schedules required to start a new lawn are untenable during a drought. Nevertheless, after reducing lawn size and planning to allow a lawn to go brown, or “California gold,” during the hottest months of the year, some people, in some parts of the county, will continue to have lawns. During seasonal change or a break in watering restrictions, some may consider Miniclover or varieties such as Kikuyu grass, Buffalograss or Bermudagrass. And now, the championship round — a five-way battle.

Bucket vs. Shower Flower vs. recirculating pump vs. tankless water heater vs. grey water

Diligent conservationists watch, exasperated, as water runs down their shower drain while they wait for the flow to warm. Among methods for capturing warm-up water, a $45 Shower Flower beats a bucket. Using an upside-down umbrella (the flower) to channel warm-up water into an easy-to-carry container with a spout solves the bulkiness and pouring problems of a bucket. A recirculating, or “comfort” pump, however, requires far less work. Some water purveyors offer discounts on these pumps, which send hot water through existing water lines to parts of the house far from the water heater. If used with a timer, running only when needed, not much energy is needed for pumping. Tankless systems are a step up in luxury and convenience, but several steps up in cost, heating water with a short blast of energy upon demand. A whole-house tankless system eliminates the need for a water heater, perhaps the bulkiest item a household is likely to discard. Getting rid of your tank also means no longer heating water just to store it for occasional use.

Complementing any of these systems, or standing triumphantly alone as a solution, greywater capture systems win the conservation contest. A “showers to flowers” system, following the rules and guidelines of local building officials to avoid hazards, bypasses the sewer by using not just warm-up water, but an entire shower’s water, to replace use of potable water in a landscape. Of course, all conservation measures matter, so even if your preferred option did not win one of these imaginary matchups, stick with it, and keep conserving. awilson@timespublications.com isael Sanchez deserves justice. His family shared that message at a July 28 news conference regarding his tragic death. Sanchez died 15 days after a fight that took place during an adultleague soccer game at Oxnard High School, 3400 West Gonzales Road, on July 10. The 29-year-old Port Hueneme man was the first in his family to attend a university, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University, Northridge. At the time of his death, Sanchez was working as a biomedical scientist and nearing completion of a doctorate, family members said. But his promising future was cut short. His father, Guadalupe Sanchez, made an impassioned plea for justice, standing before TV cameras outside Ventura law office Bamieh & De Smeth. 8—

“My son didn’t deserve this. He had many dreams to accomplish and his whole life ahead of him. Misael’s death was not an accident,” the grieving father said through a Spanish interpreter. Cousin Eric Ambriz said Sanchez grew up playing soccer, one of the biggest joys in his life. “His life was ended with something he truly loved and cherished,” Ambriz said while backed by dozens of supporters. Family members believe someone has video of the July 10 fight that can shed light on what happened. On Aug. 1, Oxnard Police Comdr. Alex Arnett told the Ventura County Reporter that detectives have only received two videos so far. “But nothing that captures the actual fight itself. It’s not helpful at all.” According to Arnett, a referee’s call at the soccer match led to a fight between players, with spectators also rushing the field. Sanchez collapsed to the ground and

consciousness before dying on July 25. Arnett described the fight as a “melee” involving more than two dozen players and spectators. “We think that the video, along with witness statements, will help us put the pieces of the puzzle together and help us determine how this young man died,” said Arnett, adding that the medical examiner’s office is still working to pinpoint the cause of death. awilson@timespublications.com s Barbara Quaid looks back at 50 years of service to the community through her leadership at the Ventura County Fair, it’s people that come to mind more than spectacle. When asked what her favorite thing about the fair is, Quaid does not talk about cheering concert crowds or the youth livestock auction. Instead, she answers with just two words. “The staff,” she said, before adding, “This staff is beyond anything anyone could ask for. They make the CEO’s job simple and easy. You can rely on

every person here. They care, and they’re all professionals.” Quaid is serving as co-CEO as the fair makes its return after two years of pandemic-related cancellations, alongside the fair’s newly hired co-CEO, Stacy Rianda.

From volunteer to CEO

Quaid grew up in Pittsburgh and moved to Ventura County in 1968. She joined a club for newcomers to the area and one of the activities was volunteering at the fair. She started in the Youth Building in 1972, helping to organize and display entries. “I brought my 3-year-old and my 9-month-old and dragged the playpen around, and I loved it so much,” she said. After volunteering for about 10 years, Quaid took a job as the fairground’s receptionist. “When you answer phones you know everything,” she said. Quaid moved up the ranks, working on concessions, becoming the fair’s deputy manager, and finally CEO in 2005. This will be her last year as CEO, but the fair will always be part of Quaid’s life. “Even though I’m retiring, I know that I will still come back here and volunteer. It’s kind of like I’ve come full circle,” she said. “There are

people here who I’ve known for years and years who I will always stay in contact with. They’re dear friends. The fair is always something that’s inside of you.”

COVID creates the shock of a lifetime

Overseeing the fair involves a myriad of sometimes unpredictable tasks, from glamorous ones like greeting famous performers, to more mundane jobs such as ensuring restrooms are kept clean. But there’s one thing Quaid never could have expected: Canceling the county’s biggest annual event in the face of a global pandemic. “Never in a million years,” she said, when asked if she would have ever seen that shock coming. As the scope of the pandemic became clearer in April 2020, Quaid retired from her full-time position as a state employee and agreed to return on a part-time basis, to help the state-owned fairgrounds weather the financial storm. Since the fair is self-supporting and not funded by taxpayer money, major cutbacks had to be made. A full-time staff totaling about three dozen people needed to be reduced to around a half-dozen, fair officials said. Quaid laid off about 60 people, includ-

ing part-timers as well as maintenance workers who had spent decades laboring at the fairgrounds alongside her. “It was really horrible,” she said about the grim task.

A return to tradition

Now that the fair is making its triumphant return, Quaid said she’s looking forward to making new memories with fairgoers. “It’s so exciting,” she said. “We just know that all of these people

who have been home without any entertainment for two years are going to be coming here for 12 days of fun, smiles and stuffing themselves silly with food.” Jennifer Giordano is one of the food vendors returning this year. Her family’s business, C&C’s Frontier BBQ near the main entrance, has cooked tri tip over oak and mesquite for over 40 years. They travel to other fairs from their home in Claremont, but she said that Ventura, where they stay in an RV near the shore, is her favorite. “It’s great. They take really good care of us here,” Giordano said. “We love this fair because it’s hometown. It feels like an old country fair.” It was “heartbreaking” to learn that the fair was called off in 2020 and 2021, and Giordino is happy to be back. “Fabulous. Couldn’t be better,” she said. “Concessionaires are one big family even though we’re competitors. We all work together to help each other out, so you miss that when it’s all shut down. When we’re all coming back together now, it’s like family that you haven’t been able to see in three years.”

Facing the challenges

Leslie Cornejo has served on the fair’s board of directors for over

a dozen years. She was president between 2018 and 2021, facing unprecedented challenges under her leadership. Before moving to Ventura County, Cornejo lived in Wyoming, where she enjoyed going to rodeos. Later in life, she started taking her kids to the Ventura County Fair. “Being a band booster and mom, I was always shuttling kids to the fair for performances and parades and all that,” she recalled. Cornejo’s mother became a fair board member in Santa Barbara County, which gave her the idea about applying to serve in Ventura County. Since Cornejo owns a retail travel agency, Santa Paula Travel Service, she knew she’d be good at helping lead the fair. “I’m kind of an organizational-type person, so I like making order out of chaos,” she said. “It’s just an amazing thing to be involved in, and particularly because it’s all about joyful events, having fun and learning.” Aside from businesses where crowds gather like concerts and fairs, few industries were hit as hard by COVID as travel. When Cornejo first heard about COVID she didn’t expect it would be such a big deal. “When things started closing down for March, we’re all thinking, ‘Well OK. We might have to shelter or close down for a couple of weeks. Oh my gosh, what are we

going to do?’ And then it just kept on going longer and longer.” As other fairs scheduled before Ventura’s were called off, it became obvious the situation was dire. The fair board heard from state officials that large gatherings would be the last activities to fully resume. “So we thought, OK. This isn’t going to go away soon,” she related, calling it “heartbreaking” to cancel the fair. “Not to mention, of course, that’s our big fundraiser for the year. And so then we were realizing all of the financial ramifications of having to close as well. So it was just very scary.” In addition to losing the fair, they also had to cancel other year-round events like car races, weddings and flea markets. Fair officials were able to access COVID relief funding and rented out space for COVID vaccinations. Now that the fair is back, the fairgrounds are hiring again and looking for volunteers. “We are all smiling. It’s just joyful right now. It really is,” Cornejo said. “We want the fair to be as close to what we usually do as possible, so that people feel like they’ve come home.”

What fairgoers won’t see this year

While most things people are used to seeing such as exhibits, livestock and thrill rides are back, there are a couple of notable cutbacks made as a

result of cost concerns. Hiring famous performers is more expensive than ever, Cornejo said, so there will be three fewer concerts compared to before COVID. The senior day matinee concert was called off and there won’t be concerts on the final Thursday or Friday nights. “The costs for the acts are through the roof and we still want people to have free concerts with their paid admission. So we did have to cut back on the number of concerts,” she said, adding that the rodeo was expanded from two days to three with the first one on Friday, Aug. 12. “We can’t just blow the money not knowing exactly what will happen at the gate coming in. So we’ve had to tighten our belt on some things, but we’re trying to give as much of a similar experience as everyone would remember.” Another big thing missing this year might be a disappointment to some and a relief to others — fireworks. Cornejo explained that decision had to do with several factors including permitting costs, fees charged by the fireworks companies that nearly doubled, and environmental concerns. “We decided we just don’t have the funds or the energy to deal with that this year,” she said, calling the decision “unfortunate” and adding that it’s not necessarily a permanent decision that will be revisited for future years. “I’m a big advocate for the fireworks. I hate to see them go, but I do understand the reason for it,” she said. “I know that some dogs will be happy that we don’t have the fireworks, and some residents, so it’s a mixed reaction to that.” Another change in tradition involves no longer opening the fair during the morning hours. The gates open at noon on the weekends and 1 p.m. most other days, partly because

of staffing issues, officials said.

A time of transition

While this year’s fair marks a triumphant return it’s also a year of transition, especially with Quaid leaving her position as CEO when the event wraps up. “Her heart is with the fair. She almost is the fair for us. She’s so involved in everything,” Cornejo said of the outgoing CEO. Letting go of employees was an extremely difficult job, but according to the fair board director, Quaid was the right person to do it because of her connection with the staff. “She’s wonderful with personnel and employee relations and all of that. Very well versed in those types of issues,” confirmed Cornejo. While she is happy Quaid will continue to volunteer at the fair, Cornejo said that it’s also bittersweet to bring the fair back and wish Quaid goodbye at the same time. “Everybody is very melancholy, as a matter of fact. But we believe she’ll still be around and she gets along with the new CEO.” She added that it should be a seamless transition. “We believe the new CEO is going to hit the ground running with a lot of energy, so we’re anxious to see where she’ll take us.” Rianda started July 6, and Cornejo said working alongside Quaid will help the new CEO learn the ropes. “Our institutional knowledge can be passed on to Stacy. And it’s a crazy busy time anyway, so it’s important we have a couple of people working. One learning, the other passing on the knowledge.”

New leadership and looking to the future

Much like Quaid, Rianda has also

been involved with county fairs for much of her life. She grew up in King City and enjoyed the Salinas Valley Fair when she was a kid. “I’d come with my pigtails and pearl-snap shirt and ride the ponies, and it was my favorite thing to do,” Rianda said. After studying agriculture business at California State University, Fresno, she took a job working with livestock at several fairs in Northern California including the Tulare County Fair, where she started in 1991. She’s been working for the Big Fresno Fair the last 21 years and served as co-CEO for the last two. In 2020 the Fresno fair did a drive-through food booth event with 20,000 cars in 10 days, she said. Last year it was staged in a mostly normal fashion. Rianda was “ecstatic” and “thrilled” when she got the job in Ventura County, since the fair has such a solid reputation across the state. “If I was ever going to leave Fresno to run another fair it would be this one,” she said. “Obviously you can’t beat the weather, the location, the people. Just everything about it. It’s the whole package. It’s a jewel that I’m just so looking forward to developing,” Rianda is also happy to have Quaid’s help as she learns the ropes at her first Ventura County Fair. “She’s worked the last several years to keep this place afloat. And I’m glad that she’s here to be a part of this fair that she and the staff have worked so hard to produce.” The Ventura County Fair takes place Aug. 3-14 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 W. he Ojai Playwrights Conference returns with the 25th anniversary of their New Works Festival, onstage at Matilija Auditorium and the Zalk Theater at Besant Hill School from Aug. 7 through Aug. 14. After a quarter of a century, the festival remains the start of something new. OPC has long been an incubator for plays that have gone on to great acclaim Off-Broadway, on Broadway and in regional theaters all around the country, and some have even become Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award finalists, nominees and winners. The OPC presents its week-long festival after a series of workshops where playwrights work with actors, directors, dramaturges and OPC’s artistic staff, including artistic director and producer Robert Egan. Special festival events include the opening/intersection presentation “OPC25: The Legacy Continues” on Aug. 7 as well as the free OPC Intern Show (Aug. 8) and the OPC International Youth Workshop Performance (Aug. 10).

The New Works Festival’s 25th anniversary also marks a moment of change for the organization, as Egan will leave OPC at the conclusion of the festival. But it’s the exciting new voices and stories that keep audiences riveted every year. You just never know when you’ll be one of the first people to see something truly special when you attend the Ojai Playwrights Festival of New Works. This year’s slate includes The Sensational Sea Mink-Ettes by Vivian J. O. Barnes, an L.A.-based writer whose plays have been produced at the Humana Festival and in Steppenwolf Theatre’s digital NOW series. The Sea Mink-Ettes, “the hottest dance troupe around,” are getting ready for homecoming, but “petty infighting and the quest for excellence threaten to tear the group apart and then sh*t gets weird. Very weird.” Bill Cain, the author of such plays as Equivocation and StandUp Tragedy and an OPC veteran, returns to the festival with God’s Spies, which finds William Shakespeare stuck in the middle of the

pandemic — of 1603. The Bard is quarantined with a Puritan lawyer and a prostitute, which leads him to wrestle with “the mysteries of life and death,” and to wonder whether his best years are yet to come. Running While Black by Jahna Ferron-Smith takes place when “thirty years’ worth of coping mechanisms begin manifesting uncontrollably.” Protagonist Nicole, a Black Creative living in Brookly, “is finally overwhelmed by the one thing she can’t outrun: change.” A recent graduate of the Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellowship at the Juilliard School, Ferron-Smith’s other plays include The Woods and SIR. Peter Kim George is the author of To Red Tendons, which revolves around a group of young actors “who come together to re-enact ‘primal scenes’ from the Los Angeles unrest in 1992.” The play deals with “seething anger turned inward, and a desire for reconciliation.” A Korean diaspora playwright, Peter Kim George is the author of Protest and Men Accumulate, a Bay Area Playwrights

Festival finalist. Stephen Adly Guirgis, the author of Motherf**ker with the Hat, returns to the festival with Dog Day Afternoon, “a fierce and fiery stage adaptation of the legendary film.” It is the hottest day of the year in 1972 and three men enter the Chase Manhattan Bank on East Fifth Street in Gravesend Brooklyn and attempt a robbery. Key word: attempt. An award-winning playwright and longtime member of the LAByrinth Theater in New York City, Guirgis is also the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Between Riverside and Crazy. Other works featured in the festival are Matthew Paul Olmos’s a home what howls (or the house what was ravine), inspired by the communities of Los Angeles’ Chavez Ravine. Avaaz by Michael Shayan takes place during Nowruz, Iranian New Year, when “the souls of ancestors come alive and visit . . . or maybe it’s just the strong Persian chai.” Suburban Black Girl by Zakiya Young, a 2021 OPC Foundry Project playwright, revolves around a young woman who is “the poster

child for racial reconciliation. But when COVID lockdowns put a spotlight on police killing unarmed Black people, everything she suppressed begins seeping out like an infected wound.” Anna Ziegler’s The Janeiad is a play about “longing and hope as well as the myths we tell ourselves in order to get through the day.” Ziegler is the author of Photograph 51 which was produced on London’s West End, as well as The Last Match which was produced at the Roundabout and the Old Globe. In addition, this year’s writers in residence, Zora Howard and Lyndsey Bourne, will “participate in non-public development work of their plays.” Whether you catch one performance or every single one of them, chances are you will be seeing the start of something amazing that one day the whole world will be talking about. Gallagher and the Lesser Saints serve as the house band for Pasadena hotspot The Mixx, where they perform for the venue’s Tuesday Night Open Jam. The band will bring their talents north to the Ojai Valley this weekend with a show at the Deer Lodge on Aug. 6. The audience is likely to be in for some surprises. “They can expect songs from the record that’s coming out soon and stuff that I don’t know if I’ll ever release,” Gallagher said. “I have about damn near 30 songs recorded and I love them all. I feel like putting them all out, but that’s a tough move. I’d love to have all the music out, but we’re releasing the songs in small chunks. That’s the way to do it.” Inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA,” Gallagher is the first person in his family to pursue music. His father, Dan of South Pasadena, introduced his son to bootleg

His mom, Paula Gibson, resides in Sierra Madre. “I’m into classic rock artists like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, CCR [Creedence Clearwater Revival] and, my go-to, Pink Floyd,” Gallagher said. “I’ve had (CCR’s) ‘The Midnight Special’ stuck in my head for three months now.” At age 11, he started guitar lessons with Pasadena music teacher John Klof, who continues to mentor him. “He taught me how to play guitar and has been writing with me since I was a little kid,” Gallagher said. “He’s basically the one who helped me lay the foundation for everything. I went from putting a record together in L.A., to going to Nashville, to mixing the album with Vance. If it wasn’t for John, I don’t know where I would be.” “Vance” is Vance Powell, whom Gallagher met in the summer of 2020 during the mixing sessions for his first record. The six-time Grammy Award-winning record producer, engineer and mixer’s credits include Phish, The White Stripes (and Jack White’s solo work as well), The Raconteurs, The Arctic Monkeys and Martina McBride, among many others. For the 16 tracks on Gallagher’s upcoming album, the young gun and the legendary producer spent 15 days together. His live experience started with The Mixx in Pasadena, courtesy of Ed Minassian, in 2016, when Gallagher was just 15 years old. “He’s been a saint to me,” he said of Minassian. “He’s put up with my band for almost three years now. Every Tuesday night we play there. I went from going there and getting yelled at and put down by old-time blues players, to being the house band for the joint and working hard to keep the tradition going. That’s really where I got my start — on stage at his bar. A couple of kids came up who had never played before on stage recently. It’s great to give that chance to other people.” Gallagher said Pasadena has a special place in his heart, as his musical experience stemmed from the city’s venues. He attended South Pasadena Music Center and Conservatory and, in 2020, graduated South Pasadena High School.

Power Players

Industry heavy hitters continued to take interest in the young musician, who credits all of them for playing a role in his success. As a student, Gallagher met videographer Marc Levine in 2017. The family friend has provided the connections for the musician to move forward, setting him up with his first studio sessions in 2020 as well as an entertainment attorney. “My dad and I refer to him as the glue,” Gallagher said. “He helped me after I did a show in Pasadena at The Rose. After that, Marc helped me land at NAMM [National Association of Music Merchants] after-jam artist showcase at Bobby McGee’s in Orange County. Marc Levine got the ball rolling on everything that is going on.” Levine said he has watched Gallagher perform since his library gigs. He described his music as “cool” at the time, but unsophisticated.

MUSIC “However, his lyrics were something to sit up and take notice of,” Levine added. “Here was this precocious little kid speaking in a language much older than himself. He’s an observational songwriter. That was something special. In talking to Cole and others, it’s come up that he is what people call an ‘old soul.’ I was intrigued by it.” From there, Gallagher’s team continued to grow. The lead engineer at Tustin’s Voyager Studio, Chris Sikora, came into Gallagher’s life in February 2020. He produced and engineered Gallagher’s first recordings. “He reached out to his friends in Nashville, session players to help create this music,” Dan Gallagher said. “Chris was going to mix the project’s songs but instead handed it to Vance Powell.” Powell was assisted by Michael Fahey, whom Dan Gallagher called “the absolute key person who helped Cole take the major steps toward being able to record with amazing musicians.” Fahey is Powell’s first assistant at Sputnik Sound and he tracked half of the first recording sessions for Gallagher. Nashville session keyboardist Jon Eldridge hooked Gallagher up with Jimbo Hart and Sadler Vaden of Jason Isbell’s band, The 400 Unit, for overdubbing bass and lead guitar on this project. Gallagher considers Hart a mentor. “When I go to Nashville, the first thing I do is call Jimbo,” he said. “We hang out and play music. He’s a great guy. Working with Jason’s band, I realized the caliber of musicianship in which I had been playing. It’s pretty far off from what I was seeing happen in the studio.” In the summer of 2020, Gallagher took a side trip to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to relax during a three-day break from recording in Nashville. Once again, being in the right place at the right time paid off: He ran into musician Barry Billings in a Marriott hotel lobby in Florence, Alabama. “They found out they had common friends in the guys from The 400 Unit,” Dan Gallagher recalled. “They co-wrote a song together that was demoed by Barry and Cole at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals. Then, Barry traveled to Buffalo to perform with Cole at his first nationally recognized music festival. He also invited Cole down to Florence, Alabama, again to perform with Jason Isbell.” Gallagher continues to record with the likes of The 400 Unit’s Hart, Vaden and Chad Gamble, as well as Hidalgo. “Things have really been a dream come true,” Gallagher said. “I have so many people to thank and I’ll be repaying them for the next, God knows how many years. I’m super, super excited to see this music come out.
