La Catrina Folk Art 2338 E. Main St., Ventura 805-641-1850 www.facebook.com/LaCatrinaFolkArt/

When customers walk into Ventura’s La Catrina Folk Art for the first time, owner Paty Diaz says the most frequent reaction comes out in one word: “Wow.”

“That’s the first thing I hear from them. ‘Wow. I didn’t know you had this much in here,’ or ‘You have so much in this little space.’ ‘Everything is so organized. Everything seems to have its place here.’ So that’s usually what I get, a feel-good reaction,” Diaz said.

Not only is the store a colorful explosion of eye candy, it also feels like being suddenly transported south of the border. Intricately decorated sombreros compete for attention with equally vibrant pottery in shades of orange, turquoise and green.

Mexican folk art is the store’s specialty, and while many of the items are imported, others are handmade by Diaz and her family members.

“My mom sews, crochets, so she can do it all,” Diaz explained. “Her pillows and her aprons are really popular. Myself, I make jewelry and I paint. My daughter

CULTURAL, COLORFUL AND

also makes jewelry and paints. My brother does a lot of woodwork and stuff like that.”

Diaz first opened the store 14 years ago at a location in Downtown Ventura, and moved to the midtown storefront at 2338 East Main Street 11 years ago. The outside of the store is almost as colorful as the inside. There’s a mural reminiscent of the Day of the Dead holiday with a skeleton woman wearing an ornate feathered and frilly hat, while a Mexican flag and colorful apparel rustle in the breeze.

Diaz has a simple philosophy when deciding what to sell in her store. “You know, I actually pick items that I like personally. So whatever I want to see here in store, whatever I want to see and buy for myself, that’s pretty much how I pick my items. And so it’s worked out for the past 14 years. So it’s just items that I think go with my style and so people do tend to like that.”

She added that the growing popularity of Día de los Muertos celebrations among people of all cultures is part of the store’s success, with strong sales of items related to the holiday all year round. Artwork inspired by Frida Kahlo is another big seller.

According to Diaz, Mexican folk art has always been popular with people who identify with their roots here in Ventura County, but it’s become more mainstream in recent years thanks to greater representation of

Mexican culture in animated movies like 2014’s Book of Life (set in a Mexican town during Day of the Dead festivities) and the 2017 Academy Award-winning Pixar production Coco , which also won praise for its depiction of Mexican culture.

While La Catrina Folk Art does its part in celebrating and spreading Mexican culture, the thing that seems to

appeal to all people is how fun the items are, Diaz said.

“I think it’s just very happy. People come in here and, you know, it puts a smile on their face,” Diaz said. “Everything’s so colorful and happy and vibrant. So I think it’s for everyone.”

BEST PLACE FOR GOING A CUT ABOVE

Slick's Barbershop 268 Village Commons Blvd., Suite 13, Camarillo 805-479-2245

slicksbarbershop805.com

Walking through the front door, Slick’s Barbershop feels more like a cool adult clubhouse than a typical salon. The walls are covered with gra ti-inspired artwork and pictures of celebrities from the worlds of sports and hip-hop music, creating a feeling where people want to hang out and socialize even if they don’t need a haircut.

Slick’s

Barbershop opened up on the quaint commercial street at the heart of Camarillo’s Village at the Park neighborhood just over a year ago and has already woven its way into the fabric of the community.

That’s just what co-owners Ragsdale Panopio and Adam Cowan set out to accomplish . . . particularly as they both live a short walk away and are raising kids in the neo-traditional neighborhood featuring homes with front-facing porches and columned buildings reminiscent of earlier times.

Panopio only recently started cutting hair professionally, but it started out as a hobby when he was in the sixth grade in the early 1990s, he said.

“I would do their pompadours for them and style their hair,” he recalled. “That’s where the nickname came from, ‘Slick.’ So there’s actually some history behind that.”

Panopio spent years working in the hospitality industry, including several restaurants, where he learned how to create a welcoming vibe for customers. Around the time of COVID shutdowns, he decided to go to school for barbering so he could turn his hobby into a career.

Panopio says the atmosphere they’ve created makes customers eager to return.

“They love the vibe. They love energy,” he said. “It’s very engaging. It’s very personal. They look forward to coming here.”

The business also helps Panopio promote a charity he created, the Alyssa Strong Foundation (alyssastrongfoundation.org). The foundation helps people with a rare condition called Aicardi Syndrome, which causes seizures, blindness and other developmental issues. The charity’s mission is near and dear to his heart, as one of his 8-year-old twin daughters has the condition.

Through the Alyssa Strong Foundation, Panopio aims to help other families with children living with the disease, who he hopes can learn from his experience and positive outlook.

“There’s so much traumatic stu that gets involved in raising a child that needs complete and full assistance,” he said. “We’re building that platform for them to at least have a resource to reach out, and share the wealth of knowledge that we’ve learned over the last eight years.”

Together, Panopio and Cowan have breathed even more vitality into Village at the Park’s commercial area by bringing in a co eehouse called Common Perk. It opened about a month ago, just a few doors down from the barbershop. In addition to co ee drinks and fresh mu ns, the menu includes gourmet o erings like the Fig and Goat Cheese Toast with housemade g and rosemary jam, warm goat cheese, fresh pear, arugula and white tru e oil.

Cowan said it’s been fantastic getting to know custom-

ers through both community-oriented businesses.

“People love coming in and talking to their neighbors. They love that we’re doing things that are a little bit more elevated, a little bit di erent than the Starbucks experience or Supercuts, whatever it may be,” Cowan said. “They love the local feel and they love the fact that we’re present in the businesses and willing to take that feedback and have those one-on-one conversations.”

BEST OPTION FOR WELLNESS WHILE YOU WORK

Jacqui

Burge charted an unusual path to success in the yoga business. She was the lead singer in an all-girl punk rock band during the early 1990s that toured with Nirvana and Sonic Youth. She said the unhealthy lifestyle from being on the road with her band STP took its toll and she decided to take up yoga in the mid-’90s.

“You’re either going to turn it around or you’re not go ing to live very healthily,” Burge said. “And so I chose to just really explore movement and meditation and improving my health and wellbeing as a lifestyle and then chose to share that with other people.”

After moving to Ojai in 2003, Burge got a job teaching yoga to workers at the corporate offices of online learning company Linda.com (now known as Linkedin Learning). The only problem with the in-person classes was that hardly anybody came because they were so busy that they worked through their breaks and lunches. She saw the need for some sort of alternative.

“Because we were an online learning business, I said, ‘okay, what if I just teach it online, and then broadcast it to all the employees in their global offices?’ And I did a 15-minute session that was packed,” she recalled.

After seeing the success of her online yoga classes,

Burge decided to leave the corporate world behind and in 2015 launched her own online yoga business geared toward office workers (remote or otherwise) called Desk Yogi. In addition to yoga classes the website also offers cardio workouts, stress-reducing breathing techniques, healthy eating advice and meditation.

Today, her online yoga classes are popular with peo ple working from home, although sometimes companies purchase subscriptions for all their workers. She recently gained a new client with 400 people working in home offices across the country.

“They wanted a way to do exercise breaks together because they’re feeling so separated,” she said.

How does taking a little yoga break at work help people?

“They feel energized,” she said. “More productive and more present with the work they’re doing. Just taking a quick little break just makes a big impact. Mainly the big feedback I get is ‘I felt more awake, I felt more alive, more available.’”

In addition to Desk Yogi, Burge owns a brick-andmortar yoga studio in downtown Ojai called Move Sanctuary that opened in a new location at 306 East Matilija Street last October. Giving back to the commu nity through charitable donations is one of her main business goals, and she provides free space for Help of Ojai’s senior yoga classes. Other charities that receive

regular donations include the Ojai Raptor Center and the Ojai Land Conservancy.

“Because we feel like this is a really strong community and it’s given to myself and the other teachers just so much back to us. We really wanted to make it one of our main missions to give back to local charities. I don’t think we’d even be doing the studio if that wasn’t the main driver,” she said.

Whether people take her classes online or in per

son, an overall goal of her wellness mission is helping people form connections with others.

“We really are just trying to create community, whether it’s online or in person,” Burge explained. “We really just want people to get together and gather. I think that’s where people feel connected and that’s where people really feel a sense of community. Isolation is not always the best thing.”

Frost considers herself to be a serial entrepreneur and has tried her hand at ventures involving photography, co ee, teaching art and even publishing her own memoir. But the latest business she launched with her husband Kyle is geared towards helping others succeed in their own careers.

Ceci

Coastal Coworking occupies a storefront in a cool two-story brick building at 2112 East Thompson Boulevard, a bustling commercial area in Midtown Ventura. Walking through the front door feels like an escape from the outside world.

The décor makes it feel a bit like a comfortable beach house, with ocean-inspired artwork and natural light pouring through expansive windows. Modern desks line the walls and there’s a kitchen with co ee and snacks to help fuel the tasks people are working on.

Frost said they started the business in 2019 with

a focus on helping the community.

“So we were brainstorming together for like a year and saving money and just brainstorming it like, ‘What can we do that values community, values the city and is really a gathering space,’” she said.

Coastal Coworking o ers di erent kinds of memberships depending on factors such as how much time people plan to spend working there and if they need a dedicated desk. Many pay by the month, but day passes are also available and popular with people who are just passing through the area. While coworking businesses have been increasingly popular in big cities in recent years — especially as remote work has become more prevalent — there are not many in Ventura County yet, making Coastal Coworking’s services a valuable addition to the area.

Frost said the biggest bene t for many remote workers who come to Coastal Coworking is the feeling of comradery from having other people around.

“We hear people are feeling isolated, lonely or unproductive at home,” she explained. “And so we hope that that’s what the perk is when they work here. Along with having great co ee, tea and snacks provided and the awesome atmosphere, and just a sense of productivity and connection, really.”

Events meant to foster creativity and success are also staged at Coastal Coworking, Frost said, such as an

evening where she interviewed a variety of successful business owners before an audience of about 30 people.

“Being an entrepreneur and starting a small business is not for the faint of heart, but it’s also not impossible. So I’m really, really, really passionate about people pursuing what they care about,” she said. “I’m always down to listen to people’s ideas.”

Workers at Coastal Coworking have been involved in a wide variety of elds. Lawyers, scientists, web developers and fashion designers have all utilized the space successfully.

Danny Zweier works as a writer for an educational consulting company and spent 10 years working from home. It was a combination of having a toddler at home and the added isolation of COVID that convinced him to rent space at Coastal Coworking in May 2021.

“For me, it’s very positive because it’s like a clean, quiet space I can go to that I know is kind of predictable and reliable,” he said. “Working from home is very convenient, but it’s potentially unpredictable.”

Another bene t for Zweier is the friends he’s made there. “Everyone is really friendly and it’s nice to meet other professionals in di erent elds and make connections. There are a few people I’ve gotten to know pretty well and hang out with. So it’s a social place, too.”

BEST PLACE FOR CHOCOLATE YOUR WAY

Top This Chocolate

1559 Spinnaker Drive, Suite 109, Ventura 805-535-4167

topthischocolate.com

Ah,

chocolate. Rich, creamy, delicious and oh, so versatile. There’s nothing quite like it.

And there’s no place to get it quite like Top This Chocolate.

The concept: Build your own candy bar, using any number of ingredients — everything from fruits and nuts to candies to cereal to savory tidbits like potato chips and crackers — to top your choice of milk, dark or white chocolate. Add a name in chocolate lettering, or include a chocolate plaque for sentiments such as “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations!” The options are almost endless, and the results are absolutely scrumptious, thanks in no small part to the high-quality, 100% cocoa butter, Fair Trade Certified, non-GMO chocolate used by the shop.

Top This Chocolate is the concept and creation of Shana Elson, who developed the idea for a class project at USC’s Marshall School of Business.

“You had to be unique,” Elson explained. “So I thought, what about a chocolate store where you can choose your own chocolate?”

It evolved into a full-blown business when Elson won first place in the Women’s New Ventura Pitch Competition in 2014 — with a prize of $25,000. “Oh my God, I’m really going to do this!” she realized.

Elson originally offered her custom-built chocolates online, running the business out of her Los Angeles apartment. With success came the search for

Halloween Party - October 30th

a retail space, but she struggled to find something affordable in the city. L.A.’s loss became Ventura’s gain when she located exactly what she needed at Ventura Harbor Village, opening Top This Chocolate in 2019.

Customers who enter the shop will find a large, bright, well-lit space with friendly servers, bins of fresh ingredients and vats of molten chocolate behind a long counter. While it is undeniably delightful to watch a chocolate bar, square or heart being poured, filled and decorated to order, there are plenty of other temptations on display: boxes of pre-made items (ideal for those who don’t have time to customize), chocolate-dipped pretzels, hot cocoa bombs, decorated Oreos and more. Elson recently added choc-

olate-covered and coated almonds to the menu, and she always makes sure to have something fun and creative available for every season and holiday.

Chocolate was not Elson’s first calling: She left a career as a litigator with the intention of becoming a baker and pastry chef. She never imagined that she’d relocate from metropolitan Los Angeles to a quaint seaside town. But just like one of her custom bars, the right ingredients came together, leading her to sweet success.

“I was very lucky to end up here,” Elson said. “What an amazing place to discover!”

Build your own candy bar with milk, dark or white chocolate and any number of toppings. All photos courtesy of Shana Elson Shana Elson, founder of Top This Chocolate.
