Stopping the slaughter

O

n Jan. 27, the world will observe the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The date marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Hitler’s largest death camp. A key question facing historians is how could an enlightened society that produced our civilization’s greatest philosophers, poets and composers also produce its most notorious mass murderers? How could it get millions of ordinary citizens to go along? Was the Holocaust a peculiarly German phenomenon, or are other enlightened societies capable? Why are we Americans willing to subsidize unspeakable atrocities in our own factory farms and slaughterhouses? Jewish Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer concluded that: “To the animals, all people are Nazis.” His message was that we are all capable of oppressing the more vulnerable sentient beings in our midst, frequently without giving it a second thought. Indeed, our own enlightened society has translated the arbitrary Nazi dictum “the Christian lives, the Jew dies” into an equally arbitrary “the dog lives, the

pig dies.” Only the victims’ names have been changed. The blissful ignorance of death camps and slaughterhouses in our midst remains. On the long road to end all oppression our very first step must be to drop animals from our menus. Vinnie Castanza Ventura

Wind energy Trump’s disdain for wind energy started with his supposed Scottish golf course property value issue; then, it caused cancer and killed birds (“We put a little statue for the poor birds.”). Those concerns were subsequently debunked or mitigated. He failed to mention the real harm and costs of coal, oil and gas. Renewable Energy World magazine reported, conventional energy receives US$300 billion in subsidies per year, while renewable energy has received less than US$20 billion of taxpayers’ money in the last 30 years. A study published by researchers at Harvard in 2011 found that the full life cycle cost of coal power is between about 9.5 and 27 cents per kilowatt-hour, most of which is paid by taxpayers in the form

of increased health-related costs. These “indirect” subsidies amount to between $175 billion and over $500 billion per year. We’re to where “We put up a big statue for the poor humans”. Bob Nast Oxnard

Why is the media wasting their time and ours listening to ANYTHING Donald Trump has to say? Doesn’t everybody, including those who support him, know by now that Trump lies every time he opens his mouth? And doesn’t this mean that those who report and spread his lies, knowing they are lies, are complicit in them? Isn’t it time to stop this moral atrocity once and for all and for the media to walk out of his press conferences en masse? That should tell Trump that the media and the people won’t stand for this abomination any longer. It’s time for the media to refuse categorically to spread Trump’s poison. NO MORE! Clive Leeman Ojai

"We celebrate equality and we celebrate diversity" Justice for All march and rally draws over 1,000 to Ventura

by Alex Wilson

alls for unity among all people across the United States and planet Earth were heard during the “Justice for All” march and rally in downtown Ventura on Saturday, Jan. 18. It was a sister event to the National Women’s March held across the nation that day, and drew inspiration from the massive 2017 Women’s March on Washington, which took place the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The weekend’s local march drew a crowd of over 1,000 people and included many men as well. Elected officials at the Plaza Park rally were mostly Democrats, including Congresswoman Julia Brownley and State Assemblymember Monique Limón, now running for the California State Senate. Issues at the forefront included climate change, gun control, social justice, women’s reproductive rights and immigration. Many participants promoted finding common ground with people from all political backgrounds. Ventura Mayor Matt LaVere stressed that sense of inclusion in his speech. “We love this community because we come together at events like this and we celebrate equality and we celebrate diversity. And most

importantly, we bring our kids. We teach them those virtues early on so they become informed adults, and they continue the tradition of what we’re doing today,” said LaVere, currently a candidate for Ventura County Supervisor. Walkways spanning Plaza Park were lined with informative booths promoting a variety of causes, and a youth mariachi band provided a festive lift to match the sunny day. Courtney Lane recently started a Ventura chapter of a nationwide gun control charity, Moms Demand Action. She was partly inspired by the Borderline Bar and Grill mass shooting in Thousand Oaks. Lane said even though guns are a divisive topic, some proposals have wide support. “94 percent of Americans believe there should be background checks on every gun sold. So we welcome gun owners. We just are looking for them to store their guns safely,” said Lane. “Mostly it’s pretty cordial.” Marchers set out from Plaza Park and went down Thompson Boulevard toward Figueroa Plaza, passing Mission San Buenaventura. They waved colorful signs, some with messages targeting Trump. One simply displayed the word “BALONEY!” and an image of Trump’s face made from the cheap pink meat. Chants also filled the air, including “No hate! No fear! Everyone is welcome here!” As marchers progressed up Main Street

“They’re making a mistake, and putting down the president for no reason,” said Bennett. “There’s God with Trump and there’s no God with liberals.” Johnson said it’s hard for her to find common ground with people who support impeaching Trump. “It’s based on no proof, nothing concrete. It’s all just a bunch of lies,” said Johnson. “They hate on 45 no matter what. So everything he does is wrong to them, so you can’t change their minds.” Marcher Annette Halpern of Ventura said she participated because she’s committed to making her voice heard, even in the face Justice for All marchers in Downtown Ventura on Jan. 18, 2020. Secret votes?

CalAware says Ventura in violation of the Brown Act by Kimberly Rivers krivers@timespublications.com

Californians Aware, a statewide nonprofit organization specializing in open government law and enforcement, claims that the city of Ventura is acting improperly by failing to report the vote tally on a closed-session city council vote regarding a recent legal action. “The Brown Act specifically provides that they must release the vote to initiate litigation, even if they don’t have to report details,” said Kelly Aviles, vice president of open government compliance with Californians Aware (CalAware), which is headquartered in Carmichael, Calif. Aviles is an attorney who specializes in the California Public Records Act, the Ralph M. Brown Act and the Bagley-Keene Act, and serves as litigation counsel for CalAware. She was citing part of the Brown Act, California Government Code Section 54957.1(a) (2): “If it has been formally commenced, information about the action, including the details about who voted in favor and who did not, should be released.”

On Jan. 12, 2020, Matt LaVere, mayor of the city of Ventura, was speaking at a meeting of the Democratic Club of Ventura, and was asked by the Ojai Valley News how he voted when the city council decided to file a cross complaint involving 10,500 property owners in the Ventura River Watershed in an adjudication process to determine water rights. (“Watershed moment: Petrochem sold as a water war looms in the Ventura River Watershed,” Kimberly Rivers, VCReporter, Jan. 16, 2020.) As reported in the Ojai Valley News on Jan. 13, LaVere responded, “I can’t talk about the votes in closed session.” He went on to say that if it is supposed to be public then it should be released but that he would “defer to our city attorney on that.” Following that meeting, the VCReporter submitted a request to the Ventura city attorney, city manager, city clerk and all city council members for the tally of the vote wherein the city decided to file the cross complaint and commence with adjudication. In response to that request, Ventura City Attorney Gregory Diaz provided a letter addressed to Laura Rearwin-Ward, publisher of

the Ojai Valley News, dated Jan. 14, 2020, which states: “Because the Ventura River Litigation was already filed, this report out obligation did not exist because the city was not ‘initiating’ litigation. If the city had been initiating litigation, the report out obligation would have existed. Because the Ventura River litigation was existing litigation, adding parties was not ‘initiating’ litigation pursuant to the requirements of the Brown Act.” “Filing a cross-complaint is an initiation of litigation, and hence, a new action,” said Aviles, after reviewing Diaz’s letter. “For example, if the other party [Santa Barbara Channelkeeper] dismissed the complaint, the cross-complaint would remain as its own case.” “Moreover, the California Constitution must be interpreted broadly in favor of public access,” emphasized Aviles. “The city’s position improperly narrowly construes the public’s rights and broadly construes the

agency’s right to keep information secret.” Aviles went on, “Finally, the city’s position only considers the closed session reporting language, but ignores the mandate from Government Code section 54953(c).” Aviles was referring to the section that states, “No legislative body shall take action by secret ballot, whether preliminary or final” and “the legislative body of a local agency shall publicly report any action taken and the vote or abstention on that action of each member present for the action.” ♦

National Marine Sanctuary news by Kimberly Rivers krivers@timespublications.com

T

he Pacific Ocean is the front yard of Ventura County and holds the treasure of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. The National Park encompasses the land on five of the Channel Islands — Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara and San Miguel islands. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) was formed in 1980 to preserve and protect 1,470 square miles of ocean and underwater habitat surrounding those islands. CINMS is one of only 14 federally protected areas overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), under the U.S. Department of Commerce. The islands and sanctuary sit at a particularly special place in the Pacific Ocean where a northern cool water current meets and mingles with a southern warm water current, creating an environ-

ment particularly rich in biodiversity supporting a range of marine life from microscopic creatures to the largest known animal to have ever existed on earth, the blue whale. The sanctuary is governed by a management plan that seeks to balance the goal of preserving and protecting special habitats with commercial and recreational uses. Shipwrecks and natural wonders in the sanctuary draw divers, fishermen, tourists and boaters. That management plan is undergoing an update and an important advisory council — which is seeking additional community volunteers — has an important role in ensuring this local treasure is protected in the coming decades.

Advisory council meeting on Jan. 24 The advisory council for the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary will be meeting on Friday, Jan. 24, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Zoo. The meeting is open to the public, and includes a public comment period. “The SAC [Sanctuary Advisory Council] is the guiding body of expert volunteers and agency representatives that give voice to the constituencies that make up Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary,” said Pike Spector, California Sea Grant State Fellow with NOAA. In 2019, the SAC was involved in the public scoping process for revising the management plan for the sanctuary. Spector said the SAC also “spent much of 2019 learning about projects, programs and emerging threats to sanctuary resources, as well as providing guidance during tumultuous events such as the Conception disaster.” The agenda for Friday’s meeting includes a review of the process to date regarding the update to the management plan, which identifies threats to the sanctuary (and plans

to address them), as well as research, education and enforcement programs. “The council is one of the most informed bodies of individuals regarding the resources of the sanctuary,” said Spector. The SAC is in a “unique position to help inform and guide sanctuary staff with the continued success of sanctuary programs.” The meeting will include presentations by Elizabeth Duncan, coordinator of the NOAA West Coast Deep Sea Coral Initiative, and Brice Semmens, director of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations. Prior to the meeting, additional materials will be posted on the sanctuary’s website at channelislands.noaa.gov/sac/meeting_ announcements.html. Admittance to the Santa Barbara Zoo is free on Friday to meeting attendees. Santa Barbara Zoo, Discovery Pavilion, 500 Ninos Drive, Santa Barbara.

SAC seeking new members The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is also seeking to add six members to the SAC. “Vacancies on the council are detrimental to council discourse, and as such we hope that all seats are filled,” said Specter. “No single individual can be an expert on all issues, policies and topics related to the sanctuary, and we welcome any and all interested applicants to submit an application to join the council.” The six open seats on the SAC are for people representing the following constituencies: education, recreational fishing (member and alternate), public at-large, Chumash community, conservation and tourism. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31. Those interested can contact Pike Spector: pike.spector@noaa.gov; 310-880-9311. Details and application information online at channelislands.noaa.gov/sac/council_news.html.

Combating human trafficking Ventura County a“transit corridor for trafficking” by Kimberly Rivers krivers@timespublications.com

W

hat does human trafficking look like? It is not always a person locked in a storage container and does not always take place in a remote Third World nation. Communities across the country are realizing that modern-day human slavery is occurring in our backyards. This includes Ventura County: In 2016, five people were arrested in Camarillo after an investigation uncovered a ring involving over two dozen victims. (“Modern slavery: detectives bust suspected human trafficking ring operating in Ventura County,” Chris O’Neal, VCReporter, Aug. 24, 2016.) The U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) defines human trafficking as “exploiting a person for labor, services, or commercial sex” and California is ranked in our nation’s top four states as a “destination” for “traf-

ficking human beings.” (Office of the California Attorney General) “As the community and law enforcement have become more aware of human trafficking, and what it looks like, our numbers of reports have increased,” said Kathryn Torres, a detective with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) assigned to the new Human Trafficking Task Force. “We don’t believe the problem is getting worse, it is simply being more recognized.” The VCSO has received an $800,000 grant from the USDOJ. The funds will be allocated over three years to fund the task force. According to the VCSO, the Central Coast acts as a “transit corridor for trafficking activity between major metropolitan areas.” Some of the aspects of Ventura County generally viewed as attractive — a popular tourist destination with conference venues — also make it attractive to traffickers. The migrant labor and transitory population also make the county ripe for this

type of activity and highlights the fact that human trafficking is not always about selling sex but includes forced work of all kinds. Federal data shows that up to about 17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S. each year for the purposes of being exploited. That number does not include residents of the U.S. who become victims of trafficking here. While 98 percent of those forced into commercial sex work are young girls and women, about 45 percent of victims forced into other types of labor are men. Torres said that in 2019 there were about 18 victims of human trafficking in the county that have been connected with resources. “Nine arrests have been made and approximately 10 investigations total have been conducted or are continuing to be investigated.” Torres emphasized, “It is important to note that not all human trafficking is just commercial sex.” She pointed to information at the Polar-

is Project (www.polarisproject.com) that highlights living and working conditions to be aware of: unpaid work, being paid only through tips, not allowed breaks, unable to pay off a large debt. Conditions may also exist at the victims’ living area and can include opaque windows or bars on the windows. Workers who live and work at the same location and experience verbal and/ or physical abuse from their supervisors could be victims of trafficking. Some signs like injuries or physical restraint are obvious. Others, such as not being in control of their own money, mandatory work quotas or an employer insisting on being present when they speak to others, can indicate the employer may have undue control of the individual’s life. The task force includes the formation of a panel of leaders from local law enforcement departments and advocacy organizations tasked with assessing the issue from a local

ransport Theatre lives up to its name with its production of Bloomsday, onstage through Feb. 2 at The Elite in Oxnard. The endearing cast sweeps us away to Dublin, Ireland, on a years-long journey that takes place on a single day. That day is June 16, otherwise known as Bloomsday. It is so named in honor of Leopold Bloom, the character in James Joyce’s Ulysses who walks through Dublin on June 16, 1904, visiting various places and meeting a host of colorful characters. (Yes, that is a massive oversimplification of the literary behemoth, but if I try to explain Ulysses in one sentence, I might hurt myself.) Every year, Bloomsday is celebrated, particularly in Dublin, by people dressing in turnof-the century costume and touring locations found in Ulysses. In Steven Dietz’s achingly beautiful and wryly written play, a middleaged American named Robert joins a Bloomsday tour in Dublin led by a young Irishwoman named Caithleen (Chandra Bond). Robert seems to know her, which unsettles her at first until the picture becomes clearer. Dietz once said that Bloomsday is about a man “who is trying to go to a city but instead he goes to a time.” That time is another Bloomsday, 35 years earlier, when Robert first met Caithleen. Back then, Robert was called Robbie and he was a cheeky young man who didn’t know a thing (or “ting” as Caithleen would say it) about love, let alone James Joyce or literature. But Robbie is smitten with Caithleen; that much he does know. And just like that, we are seamlessly transported back to the day when Robbie finds love then lets it slip away. The question is, can you go back and change the course of a life? Is

it ever too late? The time-shifting takes on greater depth and meaning as we travel back and forth — and also kind of sideways — through the love story. This becomes particularly pronounced

ne of Ventura’s greatest benefactors will receive a special thank you this weekend. On Saturday, Jan. 25, the statue honoring Miriam Schwab will be unveiled in front of the Ventura College Performing Arts Center. An avid supporter of the college and a beloved presence on campus, Schwab played violin for the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra for years and enjoyed exercising in the college’s swimming pool. When she passed away in 2017, Schwab left a $12 million dollar endowment for Ventura College’s music and aquatics departments. “It’s most extraordinary,” Ventura College Foundation Executive Director Anne Paul King says about the endowment. In commemoration of Schwab’s life and the tremendous impact her generosity will have on current and future generations, Ventura artist Michael O’Kelly was personally selected by Schwab to design the statue. O’Kelly’s work was first introduced to Schwab by Robert Lawson, department chair of performing arts at Ventura College and music director/conductor of the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra.

After months in the making, the statue will be unveiled at a private ceremony with many of Schwab’s closest friends, college leadership and local officials in attendance. “The community wants to honor her extraordinary gift,” says King. Part of the ceremony will include a performance of some of Schwab’s favorite music by students of the Miriam and Henry Schwab Academy of Music. The academy is a threeweek summer intensive music academy that was made possible by the endowment. “So many barriers have been removed by Miriam Schwab’s gift,” says King. “We think about that every day.” The statue stands as a constant reminder of Schwab’s support of the arts and the infinite possibilities she helped create. After fine-tuning every detail, O’Kelly says that the finished piece “is light and delicate and floating . . . it looks almost impossible. I’m really happy with it.” O’Kelly has given the statue the unofficial title “Stepping Out” because “it represents the achievement of going through college and moving forward with life afterwards.” The title could not be more fitting, seeing that Schwab’s gift will help so many do just that. ♦

Chandra Bond as Caithleen and Trent Trachtenberg as Robbie in Bloomsday. when Cait (Linda Livingston), the older version of Caithleen, joins the intricate dance that Dietz sets in motion. Cait mingles with the others almost as if she were a ghost, but she is flesh and blood and the regret and resolve she carries are real. Livingston captures the depth of Cait’s emotions, from darkest despair to a glimmer of hope. Chandra Bond imbues Caithleen with a charm that is tinged with a tender vulnerability. Trent Trachtenberg is delightful as the wide-eyed Robbie. John Procter balances melancholy with humor as Robert, a man who is desperate for a second chance at love. Bloomsday is performed on The Elite’s smaller ETC Stage, which feels

The power of the words do that handily. Under Tom Mueller’s direction, the actors let Dietz’s dialogue shine through. In addition to his own words, Dietz weaves lines from Ulysses into the play. It’s a lovely, effective tribute, even with Robert’s occasional well-meaning digs at Joyce. More than that, Joyce’s voice echoes like a sumptuous through-line from one time to another. At the end of the day, what was once real and true remains so. No matter what year it is. ♦ Bloomsday through Feb. 2 at The Elite, 2731 Victoria Ave., Oxnard. Midtown Ventura’s Seaward Sushi starts its 41st year, new owners are again at the helm. The spot has a storied past, told through the winding path of lines on the gowns of beautiful Japanese geishas that flow over the walls of this neighborhood treasure. We can’t talk about the food without relating a bit of the backstory. Seaward Sushi has been a popular sushi spot since 1979 and touts itself as the oldest source for sushi in Ventura County. The community recently rallied behind the previous owner, Rachel Woodward — who oversaw a major overhaul of the site and revamping of the interior — to help the restaurant overcome permitting delays with the city of Ventura. The baked salmon roll, topped with jalepeno. Photo by Kimberly Rivers

as well as bring some intimacy to the space by lowering the feeling of the high ceiling. We were welcomed in and were served delicious miso soup promptly. The menu (as of press time the website from the previous owner has not been updated with the full current menu) offers all the usual suspects: sashimi, boats, salads, udon and more. We stuck to rolls this time. My son chose the Baked Salmon Roll ($14), and I ordered the Washington ($12). We shared the Spicy Yellowtail roll ($9). I ordered hot tea, which came quickly and was properly steeped and not too hot to drink, something I run into at many sushi bars. The Baked Salmon Roll came topped with jalapeño slices, adding a unique and welcome taste to this roll. The fish was fresh and the sushi rice was good. My son always orders a side of rice, one of his favorites, and he’s become a bit of an aficionado when it comes to sushi rice. My Washington roll, with crab meat and fresh cucumber, was topped with two savory sauces. Flavorful and packing the usual sushi punch. But as is typical for me, I prefer the simpler rolls. The spicy yellowtail roll was perfect, with crispy fresh sprouted greens, a nice amount of bite and lovely fish. I was glad to see a few troupes of people venture in as the evening turned to true dinner time: a family choosing a spot in front of the aquarium, and a trio of men taking a spot next to us at the bar, enjoying cold sake and Japanese beer to kick off the weekend. We also ordered two rolls for take-out, and everything was timed well. It seemed the new crew is still working out all the kinks of service in terms of picking up menus, used plates and such, but nothing detracted from the experience and the brothers behind the sushi bar were attentive. Seaward Sushi is open every day, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5-10 p.m. ♦

ADVICE GODDESS

“I Have A Gleam...”

I

’m a straight woman, and at my recent birthday party, several people remarked about this other woman, also straight, “Whoa, is she infatuated with you, or what?” Straight women getting intense girl crushes on me has actually been a pattern in my life. Weird. A friend says I have “charisma” but couldn’t really explain what that is. — Mysteriously Popular Charisma is human magnetism. If you’re a mugger with charisma, you don’t even have to hold people up at gunpoint. They just come over and offer you their wallet. Charisma can seem mysterious

by amy alkon and magical — like psychological catnip for humans — but organizational psychologist Ronald Riggio explains that it comes out of a “constellation of . . . social and emotional skills” that allow a person to “inspire others at a deep emotional level.” This charisma skill set includes being gifted at talking, listening, connecting, and reading the room. When charismatic people talk, they grab others’ attention and emotions by being “real” — spontaneous and genuine. They’re usually great listeners, making people feel heard and understood. And they tend to be powerful public speakers, converting masses of people into followers with their voice, words, and presence. Take Martin Luther King Jr., booming out — almost singing — “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” That idea gets its mojo sucked out if it’s delivered by some nervous little pastor, mumbling, “Uh...I hope my kids can someday live in a country where people understand that skin color isn’t what’s really important.” Though people with charisma are psychologically captivating, a person doesn’t have to be physically attractive to have it. Among world leaders considered charismatic, Mahatma Gandhi had a little round head hijacked by a giant mustachioed

schnoz, and Golda Meir, the former prime minister of Israel, looked like she killed a small animal with matted fur and wore it as a hairdo. Charisma might seem like the personality version of latte foam — nice but unnecessary for human functioning. However, research by evolutionary psychologist Allen Grabo suggests that we evolved to have “psychological mechanisms which enable an individual — the potential follower — to make auto-

more attentive listener?) But lucky you; you have a social superpower — the power to charm the masses into following your lead. Hopefully, you’ll use it to do good, like by being a Pied Piper for kindness, as opposed to, say, starting a high-end travel businessslash-death cult: “Cyanide-tinis on the Lido Deck at 5!”

Spurner Phone My boyfriend of nine years often doesn’t reply to my texts and emails. He says that we talk daily, and whatever’s in my message could be discussed then. Well, it hurts my feelings to get zero response. Not even an emoji. — Increasingly Angry

Though people with charisma are psychologically captivating, a person doesn’t have to be physically attractive to have it. matic, rapid and reasonably accurate assessments” of others’ leadership potential. Getting behind an effective leader would’ve allowed ancestral humans “to coordinate effectively and efficiently” for hunting, warfare, and other “recurrent” challenges so they could survive and pass on their genes. Even people without much charisma can benefit by borrowing from the skill set of the charismatic. (Who among us couldn’t do with being a

Communicating with a man should not compare unfavorably with yelling into a manhole. (Shout “Hello?” into the sewer and you’ll at least get the courtesy of a faint “hellooo” or two back.) An email to your boyfriend is not just an email. It’s what marriage researchers John Gottman and Janice Driver call a “bid for connection” — one of many small attempts people in relationships make to get their partner’s attention, affection, or emotional support. In response, their partner could ignore the bid (“turn away”), express irritation

(“turn against”), or reply lovingly (“turn toward”) — even just with a smile, a nod, or a hug. In Gottman and Driver’s research, newlywed couples who had “turned toward” each other 86% of the time, on average, were still married six years later. The couples who ended up divorced had a 33% turn-toward rate. On a bleak note, Gottman writes, “I think that you can sometimes actually see people crumple physically when their partner has turned away from their bid for connection.” Explain the “bid for connection” thing to your boyfriend. Tell him you’re just looking for some tiny loving reply to your texts and emails — even an emoji or two. He’s human, so he might sometimes let a message slip by unanswered. But if he mostly responds, you’ll mostly feel loved instead of “increasingly angry” that messaging him feels like grabbing a handful of words and hurling them into the void. (Of course, in space, no one can hear you scream, but here on Earth, the neighbors tend to call the cops 10 minutes into a blowout.). (c)2020, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. Got a problem? FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749– 1832) declared that English writer Lord Byron (1788– 1824) was the greatest genius of the 19th century. Here's an interesting coincidence: Byron regarded Goethe as the greatest genius of the 19th century. I bring this to your attention, Aries, in the hope that it will inspire you to create a similar dynamic in your own life during the coming months. As much as possible, surround yourself with people whom you think are wonderful and interesting and enlivening—and who think you are wonderful and interesting and enlivening.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Taurus-born Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was a renowned German composer who lived most of his life is Germany and Austria. He became so famous and well-respected that England's Cambridge University offered him an honorary degree if he would visit the campus. But Brahms was too timid to risk crossing the English Channel by boat. (There were no airplanes and Chunnel in those days.) He declined the award. I beg you not to do anything even remotely like that in the coming weeks, Taurus. Please summon the gumption necessary to claim and gather in all you deserve.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

According to my analysis of the astrological omens, the coming weeks will be one of those rare times when you can safely engage with influences that might normally rattle you. You'll be protected as you wander into the unknown and explore edgy mysteries. Your intuition will be highly reliable if you make bold attempts to solve dilemmas that have previously confounded and frustrated you. If you've been waiting for the perfect moment to get a bit wild and exploratory, this is it.

CANCER

by rob brezsny (June 21-July 22):

J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) is regarded as one of England's greatest painters. He's best known for his luminous and imaginative landscapes. His experimental use of light and color influenced the Impressionist painters who came after him. But the weird thing is that after his death, many of his works were lost for decades. In 1939, a famed art historian found over a hundred of them rolled up like tarpaulins in the basement of an art museum. Let's apply this event as a metaphor for what's ahead in your life, Cancerian. I suspect that buried or lost elements of your past will soon be rediscovered and restored. I bet it will be fun and illuminating!

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

In my early adult life, I lived below the poverty line for many years. How did that impact me? Here's one example: I didn't own a mattress from ages 23 to 39, but rather slept on a two-inch thick foam pad that lay directly on the floor. I'm doing better now, thank you. But my early experiences ensured that I would forever have profound empathy for people who don't have much money. I hope this will serve as inspiration for you, Leo. The next seven weeks will be the Empathy Building Season for you. The cosmos will reward you if you build your ability to appreciate and understand the pains and joys of other humans. Your compassion will be tonic for both your mental and physical health.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

Ancient Greek author Theophrastus was a scientist before the concept of "scientist" existed. His writings on botany were influential for hundreds of years after his death. But some of his ideas would be considered unscientific today. For example, he believed that flute music could heal sciatica and epilepsy. No

modern research suggests that the charms of the flute can literally cure physical ailments like those. But there is a great deal of evidence that music can help relieve pain, reduce anxiety, reduce the side effects of drugs, assist in physical therapy, and even make you smarter. And my reading of the current astrological omens suggests that the therapeutic effects of music will be especially dramatic for you during the next three weeks.

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

“Learning to love is difficult, and we pay dearly for it,” wrote the serious and somber author Fyodor Dostoevsky. “It takes hard work and a long apprenticeship,” he added. All that's true, I think. To hone our ability to express tenderness and warmth, even when we're not at our best, is the most demanding task on earth. It requires more courage than that of a soldier in the frenzy of battle, as much imagination as a poet, and diligence equal to that of an architect supervising the construction of a massive suspension bridge. And yet on the other hand — contrary to what Dostoevsky believed — sometimes love is mostly fun and inspiring and entertaining and educational. I suspect that the coming weeks will be one of those phases for you.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

How well do you nurture yourself, dear Scorpio? How diligent are you in providing yourself with the sustenance that ensures your body, mind, and soul will thrive? Are you imaginative in the ways that you keep yourself excited about life? Do you take strong measures to avoid getting attached to mediocre pleasures, even as you consistently hone your focus on the desires that lead you to joy and deep satisfaction? The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to meditate on these questions.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Seven books of the Bible's Old Testament refer to a magical place called Ophir. It was a source of exotic finery and soulful treasures like gold, peacocks, jewels, frankincense, and precious sandalwood. One problem: No one, not even a Biblical scholar, has ever figured out where it was. Zimbabwe? India? Tunisia? Its location is still unknown. I am bringing this to your attention because I suspect that in 2020 there'll be a good chance you'll discover and gain access to your own metaphorical Ophir: a fount of interesting, evocative resources. For best results, be primed and eager to offer your own skills and riches in exchange for what this fount can provide to you.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Capricorn filmmaker Steven Soderbergh says it's crucial for us to have a well-developed story about who we are and what we're doing with our lives. It's so important, he feels, that it should be the trigger that flings us out of bed every morning. We've got to make our story so vivid and interesting that it continually motivates us in every little thing we do. Soderbergh's counsel is always good to keep in mind, of course, but it will be even more so for you in the coming months. Why? Because your story will be expanding and deepening, and you'll need to make the necessary adjustments in how you tell your story to yourself.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

I'm a big fan of self-editing. For example, every horoscope I write evolves over the course of at least three drafts. For each book I've published, I have written but then thrown away hundreds of pages that I ultimately deemed weren't good enough to be a part of the finished text. And yet now and then, I have created a poem or song in one rapid swoop.

My artistic artifact is exactly right the first time it flows out of me, with no further tinkering needed. I suspect you're now entering a phase like that, Aquarius. I'm reminded of poet Allen Ginsberg's operative principle: “first thought, best thought.”

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

Who don't you want to be, Pisces? Where don't you want to go? What experiences are not necessary in your drive to become the person you were born to be? I encourage you to ask yourself questions like those in the coming weeks. You're entering a phase when you can create long-term good fortune for yourself by knowing what you don't like and don't need and don't require. Explore the positive effects of refusal. Wield the power of saying NO so as to liberate yourself from all that's irrelevant, uninteresting, trivial, and unhealthy.. WARNING—IMPORTANT INFORMATION California law provides that, for purposes of division of property upon dissolution of a marriage or domestic partnership or upon legal separation, property acquired by the parties during marriage or domestic partnership in joint form is presumed to be community property. If either party to this action should die before the jointly held community property is divided, the language in the deed that characterizes how title is held (i.e., joint tenancy, tenants in common, or community property) will be controlling, and not the community property presumption. You should consult your attorney if you want the community property presumption to be written into the

recorded title to the property. ÓRDENES DE RESTRICCIÓN ESTÁNDAR DE DERECHO FAMILIAR En forma inmediata, usted y su cónyuge o pareja de hecho tienen prohibido: 1. llevarse del estado de California a los hijos menores de las partes, o solicitar un pasaporte nuevo o de repuesto para los hijos menores, sin el consentimiento previo por escrito de la otra parte o sin una orden de la corte; 2. cobrar, pedir prestado, cancelar, transferir, deshacerse o cambiar el nombre de los beneficiarios de cualquier seguro u otro tipo de cobertura, como de vida, salud, vehículo y discapacidad, que tenga como beneficiario(s) a las partes y su(s) hijo(s) menor(es); 3. transferir, gravar, hipotecar, ocultar o deshacerse de cualquier manera de cualquier propiedad, inmueble o personal, ya sea comunitaria, cuasicomunitaria o separada, sin el consentimiento escrito de la otra parte o una orden de la corte, excepto en el curso habitual de actividades personales y comerciales o para satisfacer las necesidades de la vida; y 4. crear o modificar una transferencia no testamentaria de manera que afecte la asignación de una propiedad sujeta a transferencia, sin el consentimiento por escrito de la otra parte o una orden de la corte. Cada parte tiene que notificar a la otra sobre cualquier gasto extraordinario propuesto por lo menos cinco días hábiles antes de realizarlo, y rendir cuenta a la corte de todos los gastos extraordinarios realizados después de que estas órdenes de restricción hayan entrado en vigencia. No obstante, puede usar propiedad comunitaria, cuasicomunitaria o suya separada para pagar a un abogado que lo ayude o para pagar los costos de la corte. AVISO—ACCESO A SEGURO DE SALUD MÁS ECONÓMICO: ¿Necesita seguro de salud a un costo asequible, ya sea para usted o alguien en su hogar? Si es así, puede presentar una solicitud con Covered California. Covered California lo puede ayudar a reducir el costo que paga por seguro de salud asequible y de alta calidad. Para obtener más información, visite www.coveredca.com. O llame a Covered California al 1-800-300-0213. ADVERTENCIA—IMFORMACIÓN IMPORTANTE De acuerdo a la ley de California, las propiedades adquiridas por las partes durante su matrimonio o pareja de hecho en forma conjunta se consideran propiedad comunitaria para fines de la división de bienes que ocurre cuando se produce una disolución o separación legal del matrimonio o pareja de hecho. Si cualquiera de las partes de este caso llega a fallecer antes de que se divida la propiedad comunitaria de tenencia conjunta, el destino de la misma quedará determinado por las cláusulas de la escritura correspondiente que describen su tenencia (por ej., tenencia conjunta, tenencia en común o propiedad comunitaria) y no por la presunción de propiedad comunitaria. Si quiere que la presunción comunitaria quede registrada en la escritura de la propiedad, debería consultar con un abogado. PUBLISHED: Ventura County Reporter;

Date: 02/13/20Time: 9:00amDept.: J61. Petitioner, Faith Rothberg, is the Special Administrator of the estate of the Decedent. 2. The Personal Representative is Ventura County Public Administrator. 3. The Decedent’s date of death is:

August 4, 2018. 4. Letters of Special Administration were issued on March 29, 2019. 5. Letters of Administration with Will Annexed were issued on March 27, 2019. 6. The Special Administrator was empowered to: a. Address the contract issue with Voyager International, including commencing suit to enforce rights and defending against suits under the contract; and b. Negotiate the consequences of Decedent’s death under the contract, including determining the value of goods the estate receives and arranging for the eventual liquidation of said goods. Pursuant to this authority, the Special Administrator and her legal counsel have investigated the facts relating to the contractual arrangement between the Decedent and Voyager International. That investigation included visiting the premises of Voyager International in Gainsville, Florida; and interviewing Richard Mutschler, the proprietor of the store operated in that location. In communications with Mr. Mutschler and with counsel for Voyager International, it became clear that Voyager International would contest any claim that the Decedent’s estate might have to recover any goods in which the estate might claim an interest or to recover the value of any inventory that had already been sold. In fact, Voyager International suggested that the estate potentially would owe Voyager International a sum of money equal to or in excess of the value of the inventory based on the theory that the estate is responsible for the contractual obligations of the Decedent to Voyager International. Based on the investigation and these communications, the Special Administrator concluded that pursuing claims in litigation to recover any goods and/or the value of any goods already sold would be extremely costly, that the outcome of any such litigation would be uncertain and that the cost of the litigation likely would be more than the value of any recovery. The Special Administrator’s primary objectives were to ensure that Voyager International would not assert claims in the probate proceedings, and, if such claims were asserted, that they would be defeated. The goal was to protect any probate and non-probate assets of the Decedent from claims by Voyager International. Under Probate Code Section 9100, the deadline for Voyager International or any other alleged creditor of the estate to make a claim expired on July 27, 2019. By that time, Voyager International had not filed a claim in the probate proceedings. As a result, Voyager International has voluntarily waived its right to pursue any claims relating to the Decedent’s estate. Under these circumstances, the Special Administrator has determined that it is in the best interest of the estate to abandon any claims relating to Voyager International and, at the earliest practicable time, for the Public Administrator to complete the probate proceedings and to close out the estate. The Special Administrator will submit to the court for reimbursement invoices reflecting the legal expenses incurred in connection with the Voyager International claims. 7. All costs of administration have been paid, including cost of publication and the probate referee’s fees. 8. No claim has been filed with the

court. 9. No requests for special notice have been filed in this proceeding. 10. Petitioner requests that the court make an order terminating the special administration of the estate and discharging the special administrator. Date: 5/12/2019 /s/: M. Shane Swanson, M.
