f there’s one thing better than being served a delicious meal, it’s enjoying that meal while drinking in a glorious view. From the mountains to the sea, Ventura County is blessed with dozens of eateries where the food is divine and the vistas are unforgettable. Expect to sigh in great contentment when you dine at one of these picturesque spots.

Aqua Beachfront Lounge and Bar at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach 450 E. Harbor Blvd., Ventura 805-648-2100 www.ihg.com/crowneplaza/hotels/us/en/ventura/vntca/hoteldetail/dining

There is simply no better way to enjoy all the beauty and excitement of C Street than at Aqua. Yes, it’s a hotel lounge . . . but don’t let that deter you. This is a classy, spacious spot right there on the Promenade, just steps from the beach. Indoors you’ll find ample sofas and club chairs for lounging, with a wall of windows looking out. But for a truly divine experience, head onto the patio outside. It boasts lots of comfy chairs well spaced for safety and privacy, oriented to make the most of the ocean view, plus a large round firepit with 360-degree seating. Drinking your morning coffee (the lounge opens at 7 a.m.) while gazing at the sea is a wonderful way to start the day, but happy hour is where it’s at: Chef William Traynor serves up California cuisine and cocktails with equal panache, and watching the sun set over the water is nothing short of magical.

Beach House Fish

668 Harbor Blvd., Ventura 805-643-4783 www.beachhousefish.com

The large wooden building at the entrance to Ventura Pier is unmistakable, and has been a beloved landmark for nearly 25 years. Opened in 1996 as Eric Ericcson’s, it became both a local favorite and a tourist destination, thanks to its menu featuring the finest, freshest seafood and waterside location. Original owner Eric Wachter has passed the torch to daughter Kiona, who found a happy medium between tradition and a new vision with a fresh cocktail menu, craft beers (Madewest Brewing Co. even has a taproom here) and a counter-style service that keeps the lines moving along. Large windows in the spacious, airy dining room allow for unparalleled views of the Pacific no matter where you sit (as well as brisk ocean breezes; consider bringing an outer layer). Head upstairs for a more scaled-back menu with table service. Feel like keeping it really casual? Stay outside on the pier and order tacos, burritos, popcorn shrimp and other simple-but-spectacular fare at Beach House Tacos next door, or pop into the fish market and get something to take home. 10 —

Steak and seafood classics with an Italian twist are beautifully and deliciously prepared at this romantic spot right on the landing of the body of water that gave Westlake Village its name. The menu seems to go on and on, no matter whether you’re having lunch, dinner, light bites with a glass of wine (highly recommended) or even a weekend brunch. Clams, carpaccio and escargot are just a few of the many starters; entrees include a dizzying array of pastas, grilled or sauced fish and meat, salads and more. Wash your meal down with something from the extensive wine list, or while away the hours with a fine cognac, scotch or decadent dessert (including baked Alaska). The sunsets here are lovely, but seeing the sun dancing on the tranquil waters and watching the ducks and geese is delightful, too. Serene, stunning, splendidly savory . . . what more could you ask for?

Home Kitchen of Ojai

1103 Maricopa Highway, Ojai 805-646-5346 www.homekitchenofojai. business.site

Prior to the pandemic this Ojai Valley favorite (shhh . . . I’m spilling a secret locals really don’t want to get out) bustled every morning because of the great breakfasts, comfortable booths and top-notch service. The brunch with bottomless mimosas was just icing. Located in the Vons shopping center on the corner of the building, it also boasted plenty of parking. Thankfully Home Kitchen has survived the pandemic, and as with many restaurants that have expanded to outside dining, the sidewalk “patio” at Home Kitchen just increases the enjoyment of this great breakfast joint. The Ojai Brunch is offered everyday and, designed for two, includes two crepes, two entrees, coffee and bottomless mimosas for $45. An option without champagne is $37.99. Pancakes, chile verde omelette, hash browns, eggs Benedict with avocado . . . Home Kitchen has all the solid basics, well done and served with easy-flowing coffee. But the big surprise here is the show-stopping view of Chief’s Peak. Chumash history tells the story of an ancestor laying down and looking up; the Chief’s eye, nose and mouth are clearly visible. Only a few of the tables inside have the view, but now, with outside dining, almost everyone can enjoy the iconic peak.

The Lookout Bar and Grill

2800 S. Harbor Blvd., Suite B, Oxnard 805-985-9300 www.the-lookout-bargrill.local-cafes.com

An unassuming bar with possibly the best view of Channel Islands Harbor. The patio looks right out over the water, and when you’ve got a drink in hand, you feel as though you can watch the boats cruise back and forth all day long. For many locals, it’s home away from home, but liveaboards anchored in the harbor love it here, too. The food isn’t fancy and there aren’t dozens of taps, but the burgers, fries and sandwiches are more than respectable, the clam chowder is to die for and the beer is ice cold and just varied enough to keep it interesting. Music and karaoke are starting to come back, too, so get here early to enjoy all that the Lookout has to offer.

h

Marina Cafe at Lake Casitas

11311 Santa Ana Road, Ojai 805-649-2514 www.instagram.com/lakecasitasboatrentals/

People come from far and wide to fish and camp at Lake Casitas. The campground is now open and boat rentals are available. Local residents probably don’t think of this spot for a day outing, but they should. After a morning catch, kayak rental or walk to see the bald eagle nest, a meal at Marina Cafe is the perfect capstone. The cafe is located right next to the boat rental desk and bait and tackle shop with some of the best views of the water from the deck. The standard American fare with Mexican food options, all made fresh to order, really hit the spot. Great burgers, tasty fries and serious breakfast burritos will satisfy your appetite while one (or more) of the 10 beers on tap will quench your thirst. Brews include 805, Topa Topa and Figueroa Mountain breweries. If you’ve got room after your meal, the ice cream cone counter has all the flavors. Breakfast is served until closing. And entrance to the lake is free when you eat at Marina Cafe.

The Shoals at Cliff House Inn

6602 Old Pacific Coast Highway, Ventura 805-652-1381 www.cliffhouseinn.com

Frequently described as the “Jewel of the Pacific,” the Cliff House Inn sits right on a private beach between Ventura and Santa Barbara. But you don’t have to book a room to partake of this small piece of paradise. Its onsite restaurant, The Shoals, makes the most of its extraordinary setting. No matter where you sit, you feel as though you are dining amidst, not just next to, the ocean. The view is matched by a well-curated wine list and fine cuisine inventively prepared with locally sourced ingredients and beautifully plated to delight the eye and the palate. Dining al fresco here is a singular experience that everyone should try at least once in their lives. The sunsets in particular are spectacular.

Soule Park Golf Course 1033 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai 805-646-5633 www.soulepark.com/facilities/restaurant

The views from the dining deck overlooking the oak-dotted golf course toward Black Mountain could be best in the Ojai Valley. Because it’s just off the thoroughfare, the throngs of visitors that are starting to clog the valley don’t think about Soule Park as a place to eat. But locals know that the onsite restaurant can be a soothing spot for a delicious meal and tasty beverage. Breakfast includes the standard fare, plus unique options like a polenta bowl and beignets (those amazing donuts from the French Quarter in New Orleans). Build-your-own omelettes and gluten-free options round out the start-of-the-day choices. But since breakfast is served until 2 p.m., you don’t have to be an early bird to enjoy them. For lunch and dinner, there are tacos, truffle fries, hearty burgers and delicious club sandwiches. Check out the jalapeño tuna melt for a great twist on an old favorite. Get a table on the deck, enjoy the sunset . . . but don’t ask to share my Bloody Mary!

Ventura Harbor Village

Margarita Villa Photo by Brendan Daly Courtesy of Ventura Harbor

Let’s just say it: There aren’t any bad spots to eat at Ventura Harbor. No matter where you take a table, you will almost certainly be dining with wonderful views of the sea and the boats in the harbor, and ocean breezes to keep you cool and refreshed. There’s hip, happening Brophy Bros., with its top-notch seafood, raw bar, delectably crafted cocktails and upstairs patio. The Greek’s spacious outdoor area guarantees both wonderful scenery and plenty of shade in which to dig into your spanakopita, moussaka and gyros (which should be washed down with a fragrant Greek wine or perhaps an ice-cold martini). Boatyard Cafe has American cuisine, 805 Bar/Copa Cubana serves up grilled cheese and Cuban specialties (including amazing mojitos), Andria’s Seafood is great for fish and chips and casual dining, La Petit Cafe is fabulously French. Craving something sweet? Coastal Cone (ice cream), Top This (chocolate) and Sugar Lab Bake Shop (cupcakes) have you covered. Bring your appetite to Ventura Harbor and stroll around until you find exactly what you’re craving. 14 —

Summit Drive-In

12689 Ojai-Santa Paula Road/Highway 150, Ojai 805-229-0730 www.summitdrivein.com

OK, so you want a burger. Sure, you can find your run-of-the-mill patty at any number of spots in the area. They are fine; good, even. But at the summit between Santa Paula and Ojai is the historic Summit Drive-In with burgers worthy of the trek. They do have a great little dining room when it’s too cold to sit outside. But the outdoor dining zone is where it’s at. This place isn’t so much about the view, it’s about the spot, the scene, the ’50s vibe. A vintage car club might be parked in the lot, or a host of bikers might be sipping their strawberry shakes. First, all the burgers are $6 — and there are a lot of ‘em. There’s the classic burger, of course. Like blue cheese? Order the Red, White and Blue. Bacon? Get a Western. Want a little fire? Try the Firehouse #20 (named for the nearby Ventura County Fire Station 20) with chipotle mayo, jalepeños, pepper jack cheese and bacon. That’s just a small sampling of the burgers available. They are always cooked perfectly and topped with fresh lettuce, tomato and with that special tangy “secret sauce.” They’ve also got a tri-tip sandwich and turkey club on the menu. Even though they offer a healthy side salad, skip it and opt for the onion rings. The fries are excellent, but the onion rings are divine. Ok now, let’s talk shakes. You haven’t done the Summit till you’ve had a shake. Thick, rich, perfectly flavored. And now you’re powered up to hike Sisar Road. (Note: the Summit Drive-In is located in a spot frequently subject to the Emergency Power Shut Offs and sometimes has to close down if they don’t have power. Call ahead to confirm the power is still on.)

Water’s Edge Restaurant and Bar 1510 Anchors Way Drive, Ventura 805-642-1200 www.watersedgeventura.com

On the other side of Ventura Harbor is this elegant gem offering waterside dining and fine cuisine based on locally sourced fish, meat and produce. The interior: chic and modern. The exterior: Comfortable and dog friendly. The bar: Stylish. The menu: Artfully prepared and delicious. From crab cakes and calamari to lamb and pork chops to ribeye and ahi, there are ample options from land and sea to enjoy here. Oyster lovers will be giddy at the half-shell selection, while cocktail aficionados will be eager to try the mix of classics and housemade libations. It’s true that this isn’t a budget-friendly restaurant, but the expense is worth it. Even better: Check out the extensive happy hour, where you can feast like royalty on a yeoman’s salary.

Cheese boards rethought during the pandemic

by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

uring the pandemic, takeout options became vital — for both restaurants and our sanity. Businesses had to adapt or shut their doors and one option that fits perfectly into this model is the cheese board. Recast somewhat in the more to-go friendly “grazing box,” these curated collections of cheese, meats, nuts and other nibbles are becoming a go-to choice for a special occasion, a thank you gift, or just a way to treat yourself. Here are some options from across the county to get grazing.

Love and Fromage

Delivery only, based in Moorpark www.loveandfromage.com www.loveandfromage@gmail.com www.instagram.com/loveandfromage/

Forget carrot cake; are you ready for a brie cake? Crystal Paterson didn’t plan to start this business, but in the midst of the pandemic people were asking her to put her talent to good use and she has taken the snack box to a whole new level. The Paterson home was known for fun, themed dinner parties, and she was always in charge of the cheese board and appetizers. They were on point and gorgeous. During the pandemic a friend asked her to make a few “in a box” for a client. At first she refused, thinking there was no way it would look good in a box. Eventually she relented, made a few boxes, photos were posted on social media, and today she’s figuring out whether they need to hire staff and open a store front. “It made people so happy,” she said. And that is what it’s all about. “It gave people a sense of normalcy.” Today people from Canada and Germany are placing orders for their friends along the Central Coast. They don’t ship long distances, but use a local delivery service ranging from about Santa Clarita to Santa Barbara. Customers often place orders for birthdays, weddings, dates or just to enjoy. The boxes are made to order, and custom themes are available. Paterson says to contact her as much in advance as you can, but that they can usually fill orders with 24-hours notice. Prices range from $25 for a box for one or two people, up to extra large boxes at $225 for 11 to 15 people.

Peirano’s Market and Deli 204 E. Main St., Ventura 805-628-9028 www.peiranosmarket.com

Step back in time in the historic Peirano’s building and browse the authentic Italian market and deli offering quality ingredients for a great home-cooked meal, or a delicious antipasto board you assemble at home. Linda Jordan and Jim Rice have kept the restaurant and market going during the tough pandemic year, adapting by offering online ordering for groceries and curbside pickup for those who’d rather not come inside. This market will appease the desire of those who like to hand select ingredients. Peirano’s offers quality meats and cheeses, nuts and more (Grubhub delivery and online ordering available). Options include Genoa salami, maestro Calabrese, bresaola and panchetta as well as cheeses like casiago with truffles, Le Pardou tunnel aged and La Bottega. Don’t skip the fresh fruit — add a basket of strawberries or blueberries. Apples are also a nice addition. Round it out with some hearty bread, nuts or pickles. Check the deli for side salads and other delights to include as well. 16 —

Under the toque by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

Local chefs dish on their early inspiration, culinary adventures and what makes them cook

nshaffer@timespublications.com

We want everyone to have a good experience. When you come into a restaurant, you want to feel like it’s worth paying for it, and that you’re happy that you had that meal.”

Chef Ren Weigang, Pacific by NoRu

P

acific by NoRu takes its name from its two founders — James Norton and Ren Weigang, affectionately called “Ru” by friends — and their shared love of the sea. Hailing from Ventura and Hawaii, respectively, the two met as teenage surfing enthusiasts in Ventura, and quickly bonded over waves and food that were equally tasty. Despite years of travel and different experiences, they stayed close, and eventually opened their upscale bistro in Downtown Ventura in late 2018. The menu reflects the culinary variety found on both sides of the Pacific Ocean: fresh, local, organic ingredients, for which Ventura County is famous, prepared in a distinctive style reminiscent of both California cuisine and Hawaiin fusion. Weigang is also the chef, who worked in culinary hot spots such as the Big Island, Napa Valley and France before moving to Ventura County. Like many food industry professionals, his love of cooking started close to home, with his Italian grandfather, William Santo. “Those are my first good memories of cooking . . . cooking his pastas,” Weigang recalls. Weigang first started working in restaurants around Hawaii, “and I just started getting good at it . . . and doors started opening.” The resort industry was his proving ground, giving him access to quality ingredients and kitchens that allowed him to explore and invent, as well as a comprehensive culinary education: He had the opportunity to try his hand at cuisines from all over the world. In addition, he helped launch a few different Japanese restaurants in Hawaii — a time of Weigang’s life that he describes as “exciting.” “I’m comfortable in most cuisines because of the resorts,” he says. But Japanese food, in particular, is his passion. “Coming from Hawaii, I’m very confident with Japanese ingredients. I love Japanese food.” Weigang first came to Ventura County in the 1990s to work at the Ojai Valley Inn. Later he worked at private country clubs and went to culinary school at the Culinary Institute of America. He moved back to Hawaii when he got married, and re-immersed himself in the lucrative resort scene. After getting divorced, he moved back to California, where he reconnected with Norton. The two cooked up their restaurant scheme over a glass of wine at Weigang’s dining table. “Our focus is putting out good farm-to-table food,” he says of the Pacific by NoRu concept. “Trying to use the best quality products with a Pacific Island flair. It’s a mix of different cuisines; it’s evolving.” Weigang’s personal journey is reflected in every aspect of the Pacifc by NoRu menu. Japanese offerings include yuzu/miso chicken kabobs and gyoza. There are Hawaiian standards like kalua pork and poke. Homemade tagliatelle, gnocchi and risotto are nods to Weigang’s Italian heritage. There’s also a wonderful Kobe beef burger and fabulous flatbreads. All dishes are prepared using seasonal produce and other ingredients selected at the peak of flavor and freshness, and plated with an artist’s attention to detail and aesthetics. The cocktail menu is put together with the same care and flair. Weigang cred20 —

its bartender De Lonne Kelly with crafting Pacific by NoRu’s famously fabulous libations, made with house-infused spirits, fresh juice and top-shelf liquor. “He’s very creative,” Weigang says of Kelly. “I’ll bring in different ingredients and he comes up with some fun things.” Delivering haute fusion cuisine doesn’t come cheap, and the restaurant’s price point attests to that — which has proved challenging in Ventura. “Ventura is a tough town,” Weigang explains. “There aren’t too many higher-end restaurants. It’s not like LA or Santa Barbara . . . We don’t have the clientele for it.” But Weigang and Norton have maintained their commitment to offering an exceptional culinary experience. They chose a good location with a smaller footprint (the spot near the corner of Oak and Main streets is long, skinny and not overly spacious) that didn’t need much in the way of construction, and were always prudent about crowd control (even pre-pandemic): advance reservations were necessary to avoid a long wait. In Weigang’s view, the prices on the menu should be justified by exceptionally prepared and presented food with flawless service in a comfortable atmosphere in which to savor every bite and sip. And that meant not overwhelming the kitchen or the waitstaff, which might sacrifice the quality of any one of these elements. “We want everyone to have a good experience,” he insists. “When you come into a restaurant, you want to feel like it’s worth paying for it, and that you’re happy that you had that meal.” During the pandemic, Pacific by NoRu mostly shutdown altogether. There was an effort to offer takeout early on, but that was abandoned for simply shutting the doors until times were better. As first outdoor and then indoor dining have opened back up, Pacific by NoRu is starting to see its regulars trickling back in, as well as new diners looking for upscale cuisine. “I feel like everyone is wanting to get back to mingling (safely) again. Some of our older clientele has been coming back,” Weigang says. “Finally we’re rehiring. Our solid crew [including Kelly and chef de cuisine Kyle Kranjack] came back and we’re getting busier to where we have to hire new people.” And as Weigang points out, no restaurant can survive without reliable staff and customers. “I firmly believe that a restaurant is not just a chef,” he says. “It has to do with the customers and what they want. It’s a partnership . . . It’s my food . . . and I see the vision . . . but the restaurant doesn’t go without an amazing team.” “My main goal,” Weigang continues, “is just to have a good, consistent, solid restaurant.” Pacific by NoRu, 394 E. Main St., Ventura, 805-205-9618, pacificbynoru.com. Continued on Page 22

Bringing people together with food and drink runs deep in the blood.”

Chef Kelly Briglio, Paradise Pantry

or Chef Kelly Briglio, one half of the dynamic duo (with partner Tina Thayer) behind Paradise Pantry, her culinary adventures started at home. Raised first in rural Madera and later Ojai (she moved to the valley when she was just 6 years old), Briglio grew up among a family that lived, loved and ate well together. “I had the luck of growing up with homemade family meals almost every night,” Briglio recalls. “I had my very Italian grandparents living next door or down the street from us all of our young lives. My grandma never left the house except to go to the store or go to church and the rest of the time she would be cooking. Both my Mom (who is an amazing cook and still working with me on the Paradise Pantry kitchen team) and I learned much of our core culinary base from Grandma B.” “I definitely began my love for food and cooking around our family dinner table,” Briglio sums up. “Bringing people together with food and drink runs deep in the blood.” It was an excellent start, augmented by on-the-job experience. Briglio started working in restaurants at the tender age of 14, and hasn’t left. Admittedly a “self-taught” chef from the “school of Burn & Learn,” Briglio’s resume includes a stint at Rosarito Beach Cafe (where Fluid State now sits), where she helped prepare high-end Mexican cuisine under chef and mentor Sandy Smith. At just 24, she opened her first restaurant, Restorante Pirana, in Costa Rica, serving Mexican, Caribbean and Asian fusion. “Day and night of constant cooking and creating menus was all the school I needed. Of course, I never stop learning,” she says. By 2003, Briglio was back in Ventura and the proprietor of Westside Cellar, which longtime locals recall for its plush, elegant interior and an eclectic menu with fine wine, gourmet bites and “the first restaurant cheese menu in town.” This hip hotspot is no more, but “the Westside Cellar cheese plate is the same classic plating you see at Paradise Pantry today. This is also where Tina and my friendship and working relationship began.” Thayer was front-of-house manager and shared Briglio’s love (some might say obsession) with cheese and wine. Together they joined forces to open Paradise Pantry in 2007, at 677 East Main Street, near Fir. “I was looking for a new challenge outside of the kitchen,” Briglio explains. “I wanted to experience the life of a cheese monger and drink all the glorious wine I could get my hands on. We created what we ourselves desired to have in our community.” It was a winning combination. Gourmet cheese, wines to go with it, and owners who knew this world inside and out: Paradise Pantry was the spot to find decadent appetizer platters, gourmet ingredients for special occasions or just something rare and delicious to enjoy at home. As its menu and popularity grew, Briglio and Thayer began to contemplate evolving Paradise Pantry into a fullblown restaurant. When a larger spot on lower Main Street in Downtown Ventura became available in 2013, they relocated and expanded. You can still find amazing cheese and wine at Paradise Pantry, as well as an artisan market specializing in locally sourced pickles, nuts and chocolate; spe22 —

cialty crackers and jams; breads; cookies; kitchen implements and more. But now the ever-changing menu offers more substantial meals crafted from seasonal ingredients. Favorites include Kel’s Killer Mac’n’ Cheese with Lobster, amazing burgers (available during a monthly Burger Week), beautiful salads and to-die-for dinner specials. “We consider our menu type as ‘elevated soul food,’” Briglio says. “Everything is made in house and is unique to Paradise Pantry. I am addicted to creating seasonal dishes from what the land is offering. I am fiercely loyal to my local farms and believe in representing them with the respect and thoughtfulness that their produce deserves. Our goal is to always try to be better, share new exciting products and dishes and to overall deliver an unforgettable experience.” An experience that doesn’t end once the check is paid: Briglio and Thayer love talking shop with their customers, educating them on wine and cheese, and helping them create collections of delicious foods and products to bring home or gift baskets to send to loved ones. Paradise Pantry also offers a wine club. “We are unique in that our restaurant is connected to our artisan cheese counter and wine shop,” Briglio says. “Tina puts together incredible monthly wine clubs and hand selects our eclectic offering of wine in the market. We have something for everyone and love putting gift bags and baskets together for anyone on your list. Not to mention our winemaker dinners and cheese events! Basically we are a one-stop shop for the true foodie.” The restaurant was thriving prior to March 2020. With COVID-19 changing the food industry landscape, Paradise Pantry had to pivot back to more of a takeout model. “The pandemic has been a roller coaster of a year for everyone,” Briglio admits. “At Paradise we did whatever it took to continue to be here for our customers, community and staff. Our entire menu went into takeout mode without skipping too much of a beat, and we spent days and weeks adjusting to safety guidelines and restrictions to keep everyone safe. I know that Tina and I did, and still do, our very best to keep our menu and market items fresh, delicious and creative. Trying our best to create some sense of normalcy in these crazy times. Embracing the new abnormal.” What has never changed: Briglio’s passion for bringing people together (safely) around food and wine, and supporting the farmers, artisans and fellow foodies that enable her, because they are as excited by quality and craftsmanship as she is. “I am passionate to represent and support all the people that give my craft meaning,” she emphasizes. “I believe in representing the people behind the food. The local farms that grow the vegetables and pick the fruit. Farmstead cheeses and artisan meats. The beekeepers harvesting our local honey. Wine from naturally farmed vineyards. Our local fishmongers, chocolate companies and coffee roasters.” “Real food, real people, real stories,” Briglio continues. “They are my inspiration and I cannot stop creating around their offerings.” Paradise Pantry, 222 E. Life In The Fastened Lane

I’ve been with my boyfriend for a year, and I love him, but I also love my independence. I need alone time, meaning space from him and everybody. He wants to spend every minute together and seems to need constant closeness to feel okay. Is this a bad sign — on his part or mine? Should I want to spend every second with him? — Confused The sort of relationship where the partners are never apart tends to be a good thing for only one of them: the tapeworm. Chances are your boyfriend’s preference for a more, uh, conjoined style of romantic partnership is shaped by his “attachment style.” “Attachment” is British psychiatrist John Bowlby’s term for a person’s habitual way of — relating in close relationships: for example, securely (feeling they can generally count on others to be there for them) or insecurely (suspecting others will bolt on them at any moment). Our expectations for how we’ll be treated by romantic partners appear to be driven by how we, as infants and tots, were treated by our closest caregivers. For example, if infant us shrieked out of fear or hunger or because of a soggy diaper, did our primary caregiver (usually Mommy, but maybe Daddy) reliably come running to soothe us and fix the problem? If so, we’d be likely to develop the psychological orientation that psychologist Mary Ainsworth, building on Bowlby’s work, called a “secure base from which to explore.” If, however, our shrieks were ignored or only sometimes met with comforting, we’d likely end up “insecurely attached,” and this would become a template for how we act in our adult relationships. (Hello, fear of abandonment and boyfriend whose romantic role model seems to be “court-ordered electronic ankle monitor”!) Decide what independence means to you in practical terms, like how much alone time you need and anything else that’s important for you, and tell him. Research suggests a person can change their attachment style — become more secure — but it takes a good bit of work on their part and their partner’s (through frequent reassuring attention and cuddly touch to challenge their expectation of abandonment). Are you and he willing to invest the effort? If not, you probably have to swap him out for a

This guy texts and FaceTimes me daily, and he finally asked me out. I was expecting a date, but it was a group dinner in his friend’s backyard, and he didn’t make a move all evening. I was sure he was into me, and we’re both fully vaccinated. What’s his deal? — Confused Sexually, if your date is a total animal, you’d prefer it not be the sort that gets bungeed to the hood of a hunter’s station wagon. The underlying problem here is “information asymmetry,” which Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz explains as “Different people know different things.” (Asymmetry is simply a lack of symmetry, sameness: disproportion between parts of something, including unequally available information.) Information asymmetry is an element of “signaling theory,” an area of economics that looks at the ways people behave — flowing from the decisions they make — because of the information they have (or lack). In this situation, you know you want the guy to end the evening all mwah-mwah-makeout, but his mind might be filled with a bunch of bouncing question marks about whether you’re into him. It’s also possible he realized he’s just not that into you, he wants to take things slowly, or he’s generally timid about making moves on women (or especially so in hopes of avoiding #himtoo). What ends the asymmetric information stalemate? Information! Send signals revealing the information you have that he does not: “I’M INTO YOU AND WANT YOU TO MAKE A MOVE!” Flirting is the ideal way to communicate this, as it gives each of you an ego cushion — the ability to pretend it doesn’t mean what it seems to mean — that putting it out there in plain words does not. Powerful forms of flirting include: looking into his eyes while you talk, touching him, playing with your hair, and playing with your clothes or his. Err on the side of flirting heavily — way more than seems reasonable — because men can be a bit hint-blind. His getting this information is likely to push him into action — or tell you he’s gotta bow out. But maybe consider being a little bit patient. It was one date! My guess? Life mirrored art: those rom coms where the “nice guy” wants to kiss the girl at the door, but — whoa! There go his testicles, leaping out of his pants and going off to hide in the bushes, and he gives her a handshake goodnight. (c)2021, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. Got a problem?
