“Justifiably frustrated” Parking issues at open spaces in Ojai by Kimberly Rivers

kimberly@vcreporter.com

T

he Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC) has hired a private security company to help enforce parking regulations and other rules at its trail heads as a flood of people visit the nearly 2,000 acres of trails and swimming holes managed by the nonprofit organization in the Ojai Valley. “This is usually our busiest time of year,” said Tom Maloney, executive director of OVLC. But it’s being compounded by the closure of other open

spaces as well as closed parking lots at other outdoor recreation spaces, such as parks and beaches. In addition, swimming holes along the Ventura River are drawing more people. “A confluence of hot weather and cool water.” “Our board really wants to stay open,” Maloney said, emphasizing that it’s the mission of the organization to provide access to natural spaces, and they feel that during this time that is even more important. Hiring security personnel was not included in the annual budget for the OVLC, which under normal conditions

could manage enforcement. But the recent increase in crowds has called for a “different skill set,” according to Maloney. The security detail is encouraging people to park legally and not block ingress and egress, as well as enforcing the no-alcohol policy and encouraging people to pack out their trash. The weekend of April 25-26 saw overflowing parking lots with cars lined up along roadways and through the residential neighborhoods near the trail heads at River View and Oso. At the Riverbottom trail head at Meyer Road, cars lined up on both sides of

the entry to the parking lot, blocking emergency vehicle access. The weekend of May 2-3 was almost as bad. “River View was over the top,” Maloney said. The parking lot was overflowing, and cars parked up Rice Road and wrapped around onto El Roblar. Security made sure cars didn’t block other vehicles in the parking lot and Maloney said it has helped, as has the city of Ojai closing North Signal Street — an access point to the popular Shelf Road hiking trail. Even so, there is very limited parking. “Neighbors are justifiably frustrated.” With soccer fields, volleyball courts and other recreation spaces still closed to the public, people are hitting the natural areas hard. “With the heatwave we are seeing a lot of people coming into nature who don’t have a lot of experience being in nature,” Maloney said, noting that lots of coolers are being brought in and trash left behind. Someone even got a golf cart-sized electric “buggy” of sorts down to the swimming hole. “I don’t know how they got it there,” he said. OVLC made the decision to lock all of its garbage cans to encourage visitors to pack out their garbage and prevent OVLC staff from having to handle other people’s trash — someCars of visitors to the River Bottom preserve in Ojai filled the River View parking lot and lined both sides of Rice Road, on Sunday, May 3, 2020. So long, SATs CLU to drop standardized testing by Alex Wilson

C

alifornia Lutheran University (CLU) officials recently decided to stop requiring standardized test scores from prospective undergraduate students starting with the Fall 2021 semester. The permanent switch to a test-optional admissions policy at the Thousand Oaks-based university has been in the works for several years, and was not directly related to the serious difficulties facing educators due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some researchers believe high school GPA is a better predictor of college success, regardless of test scores. CLU Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Michael Elgarico says SAT and ACT tests have also been shown to be culturally biased against low income candidates and underrepresented minorities. 6— — MAY 14, 2020

“Our university has always been in a position to practice holistic education. What that means is looking very broadly at a candidate,” said Elgarico. “We really want to enroll students who show that they cannot just be successful, but they also demonstrate character, citizenship, grit and determination that isn’t always readily measured.” Researchers have found that students from more affluent families can afford expensive test preparation classes and tutors that provide an advantage. They’re also more likely to pay to re-take tests to improve their scores. Elgarico said that CLU’s move away from standardized testing appears to be a trend. “I think part of that was really being responsive to the broader shift. Universities and colleges have looked very closely at it. We’re certainly not the first to do this,” said

Elgarico. Even though test scores will not be required for most applicants, certain students will still be required to submit them. Those include homeschooled students, ones who attended high schools that give written evaluations instead of letter grades, and students competing for CLU’s top academic scholarships. Students who choose not to submit test scores will still be required to send a full application, including academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and the answers to four supplemental questions. Applicants may, if they choose, submit test scores that will be considered part of their entire admission package. The trend to de-emphasize standardized testing scores is most prevalent among relatively small private schools like CLU. For larger institutions, such as the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems, there’s more resistance. While it’s true that the coronavirus has led many colleges and universities to put a temporary hold on testing requirements for at least one year, those requirements will likely be brought back as soon as possible. thing they’d typically do, but that the organization has reconsidered in light of the coronavirus. “This hasn’t gone as we might have hoped,” Maloney admitted. Staff is having to “deal with a lot of people leaving trash.” Including the dreaded abandoned dog poop bags, which are now being stacked on top of the locked garbage cans instead of going into people’s cars. So far, staff prefer using a grabbing stick to collect garbage rather than cleaning out the garbage cans. In terms of staying open, Maloney said that he speaks by phone to officials from the city of Ojai and Ventura County each Friday to assess and coordinate. “We are monitoring it hour to hour.” For more information about the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy visit: www.ovlc.org.

Prospective CLU students will no longer be required to submit SAT and ACT test scores as part of their admission package, starting in Fall 2021. (Photo submitted)

Vice President for Enrollment Management Ginger Reyes said that, due to the coronavirus, the decision was made to temporarily suspend the use of test scores for admission eligibility at all CSU campuses for students starting classes in the fall of 2021. One reason is that students can’t take the tests in the usual ways due to stay-at-home orders and social distancing requirements. Reyes says it remains unclear if classes will even be held on campus or online for the upcoming fall 2020 semester. “We are planning for our fall term as if we will be coming back to campus but we also have to make sure that we have plans in place

if we have to pivot,” said Reyes. “There are a lot of unknowns and moving parts because we’re not only working with the governor but also the chancellor’s office and our local community.” She says there is some growing agreement in the academic world about doing away with standardized test requirements permanently. “It allows students to have more of a holistic review,” said Reyes. “So I think it broadens your applicant pool.” Even so, Reyes says any decisions to permanently eliminate the test requirements at the CSU and UC systems would need to undergo considerable review.

“Health first”

525 county businesses reopen by Kimberly Rivers

kimberly@vcreporter.com

L

ast week Gov. Gavin Newsom laid the pathway for reopening, with counties moving into Stage 2 of modifying the stay-at-home and business closure orders, calling it a “health first” approach that provides “flexibility.” This involves a shift from an essential vs. nonessential plan to identifying businesses that are low risk or high risk, with guidelines for dine-in options being provided on Tuesday, May 12. “We recognize the impact of economic hardship. We must get our economy roaring once again and put paychecks in people’s pockets,” said Newsom during a press briefing on May 4. “But the risk of COVID-19 infection is still real for all Californians and continues to be fatal.” “This is all retail,” said Mike Powers, CEO of Ventura County, on Tuesday, May 12, clarifying that the opening is not limited to the few examples listed by the state. “Not every county is moving forward . . . because of the great work of this community keeping our numbers low, that is allowing us to move forward.” He said that since Friday, May 8, 525 businesses have registered with the county to reopen. The state reopening guidelines do create an inconsistency with larger box stores being allowed to sell all their products in-store, whereas smaller retailers are only allowed to sell their products through curbside pickup. Kim Prillhart, director of the Ventura County Resource Management Agency, said the county has received some registration requests from businesses that are not included in this round of opening. She mentioned dog grooming as an example of a business that is not able to reopen at this time. She suggested that such businesses can get prepared with plans, but asked that they not register yet. “We’re trying to get the parks . . . and beaches open with parking, but we’re not there yet,” said Kelly Long,

chair of the Board of Supervisors, emphasizing that they are “advocating” with the state for further reopening of all types of businesses. “Too many emails to all of us saying we’re not doing enough.” Retails stores are able to open with curbside pickup/delivery. Related manufacturing and supply chain businesses may also reopen with directives outlined in the May 7 order issued by Dr. Robert Levin, health officer with Ventura County Public Health. That order repeals and replaces the April 20 VCPH order. Some aspects of the county order are more strict than the state order and apply to the entire county, including areas within city jurisdictions. The May 7 order is in effect until May 30. In terms of the low-risk businesses that are able to open, they “must establish, implement and enforce a site-specific prevention plan in accordance with the State of California COVID-19 Industry Guidance.” Before reopening, each business must register and file its preparedness plan through www.vcreopen.com. Businesses that have already been open have 10 days to submit their preparedness plan. Details online: https://covid19.ca.gov/roadmap/. Businesses do not have to wait for the verification visit by the county, but must complete the following checklist. Businesses already open must complete it and register with the county by May 18. • Business is one of the industries designated for reopening by the state and the county order. • Performed a detailed risk assessment following the state guidelines. • Completed and posted a written site specific COVID-19 prevention plan. • Control and screening measures have been implemented at the business. • Implemented disinfecting protocols at the business in accordance with California Department of Public Health Guidance. • Employees have been trained on how to limit the spread of COVID-19

Rules for golf courses and driving ranges

G

olf courses and driving ranges are allowed to open with the following restrictions: • Practice putting greens, pro-shops and food service at courses must remain closed. • Motorized carts are not allowed. • A group up to four — need not be from the same household — may play together but may not alter-

nate players in and out with other groups. • 30 feet should be maintained between golfing groups. • Covered ball washers are required. • Flag pins must be removed and the cup must be inverted to eliminate high-frequency touch surfaces. • Balls at driving ranges must be sanitized between customers.

NEWS including how to screen themselves for symptoms. • Always have an on-duty employee tasked with monitoring prevention plan compliance. • Compliance hotline flyer is posted in a prominent location that is visible to the public and employees. • Attested to these and other requirements as listed on www.vcreopen.com. The county order includes other directives. All private testing facilities must report test results within eight hours. People over 75 years of age, or over 70 with “comorbidity” conditions, “are ordered to stay in their place of residence and must at all times follow Social Distancing Requirements to the greatest extent feasible.” Those individuals “may leave their places of residence only as necessary to seek medical care or exercise or nutrition or to perform essential work in furtherance of Healthcare Operations or Essential Governmental Functions or Services.” The county “stay well at home” order is restated: “Persons may leave their place of residence only to perform one of the following essential activities:” • To “engage in activities or perform tasks essential to their health and safety, or to the health and safety of their family or household members

(including pets).” That includes getting medically needed supplies or medication, seeing a healthcare professional, or getting supplies needed to work from home. • To get food, pet supplies or any other “household consumer products” including cleaning products for themselves or any other person in order to “maintain the safety, sanitation and essential operation of places of residence.” • The full order includes guidelines for funerals and weddings (indoor and outdoor), restricting gatherings to no more than 10 people. • Gatherings of any size, such as faithbased events, concerts, plays, political speeches and others, must take place outside, all attendees must be inside vehicles at least six feet apart from each other, and not leave the vehicle. People in each car must be from the same household. No restrooms facilities shall be provided and items may not be transferred between vehicles. • Outdoor activities such as golfing, tennis, walking, hiking and bicycling are allowed. At the Tuesday, May 12 meeting of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, Rigoberto Vargas, director of VCPH, explained to the supervisors that the county is meeting four areas of the state’s “report card” but highlight-

ed three areas where improvement is needed to move into the “accelerated stage two” section, which includes fully opened retail and some dine-in options for restaurants. He said the county is still seeing too many positive cases. “We can have no more than 85 cases in the last 14 days,” Vargas said, reporting the county had 148 new cases over the last two weeks. The state also requires no COVID deaths in the past 14 days, and a minimum daily testing ratio of .31 per 1,000 residents. That would involve the county testing 1,300 people per day, double what the county is testing right now. “We are exhausting every effort to find more testing capacity at state, federal and private levels. OES is scouring the country and the world,” said Powers. “This is a worldwide shortage. We are pushing and getting more tests. We are going to get there.” For questions or more information, businesses (part of this reopening phase or not) can contact the County of Ventura’s COVID compliance hotline at 805-202-1805 or email covidcompliance@ventura.org. The full order is online at: https://s30623.pcdn.co/ wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ VC-Public-Health-Officer-Order-May-7-2020.pdf.

Adopt a Grad group celebrates, supports 2020 graduates

by Kateri Wozny

T

hose wishing to help out a class of 2020 Ventura County graduate who can’t participate in their commencement can do so through a private Facebook group. Sara Herrera Reeves, founding administrator of the Ventura County Class of 2020 Adopt a Grad page, started the group on April 19 after noticing graduate yard signs in her neighborhood. “I got online, started ordering candy and placed the gift bags on their doorsteps,” Herrera Reeves said. “One girl I gifted wrote me a thank you letter and left flowers on my doorstep. I thought, okay, I got to do something and reached out to the local moms groups.” To date, more than 9,000 members are a part of the group while 1,950 graduates have been “adopted.” “It’s a milestone marker that kids are missing out on,” said Herrera Reeves. “They’re our future. Being a mom, sometimes it takes a village, so let’s keep encouraging them to move forward.” Here’s how it works: after submitting a request to join the group

An energizing ride Exploring the e-bike option

he wind in your face, the exercise, not having to find parking, no emissions, a great way to get where you’re going: All are common reasons for riding a bicycle. Over the past 20 years or so, many companies have been working to increase access to the joy and health benefits of bicycle riding by adding electricity to the mix. In addition, advances in battery technology have made electric bikes not just feasible, but economical. “When lithium batteries started becoming affordable, that is when bikes made sense,” said Peter Miller, founder and co-owner of Hill Billy USA, which supplies golf trolleys, bags and accessories. similar four-wheel drive e-vehicles; Dogleg is its electric bicycle brand. The lithium battery option “really reduced the weight so much from the typical lead acid [battery]. 2008 is when we got the first bike in to start testing.” Dogleg was formed in 2009, and takes its name from a golf term. A dogleg is a bent route between the tee and the hole. Miller attributed the name to his business partner, Robin Gardner, whom he met in the 1980s working at Vandenberg Air Force Base building space shuttle launch equipment. The two connected again in 1996 to form Hill Billy, which offers battery-powered push trolleys used by golfers. Miller, originally from Scotland, said that “hill billy” is a British term for billy goats. “We did that through mail order and grew that business as the golf world was growing and Tiger Woods was on fire,” he recalled. Hill Billy

would get a lot of calls about fixing golf carts and it seemed a natural move to become a dealer. Miller and Gardner had knowledge of the batteries, and had connections in the industry, so they began designing bikes. The Hill Billy trolley business is booming at the moment. With physical distancing rules at golf courses disallowing golf carts, the electric-assist trolley for heavy club bags has been in high demand and Hill Billy is shipping multiple units every day. There’s been a noticeable uptick in interest in electric bikes as well. Hill Billy’s customers run the gamut, but Miller said that, “We sell to a lot of boomers with bad hips and bad knees . . . the bikes help them stay active.” For one customer in Santa Barbara with multiple sclerosis, “The bike gave her her life back.” Miller said that a lot of folks first

approach e-bikes with the idea that they are for “lazy” biking. “It’s not about being lazy, it’s about being smart.” The more we enjoy something, the more we will do it, including exercise. And at least one study (1) has found that the heart rates of those riding electric bikes were comparable to those for standard bikes riders. E-bikes can encourage folks to “get out and exercise” when they otherwise wouldn’t, said Miller. The frames are built in China and the bikes are assembled in Ventura. “China can build a better bike than anybody else. China builds more bikes and uses more bikes than anybody else,” Miller said, pointing to the quality of the welds in the bike frame body. “They are not cheap or cheesy . . . China has got it dialed in.” Dogleg’s concept was focused on affordability as well. Standard e-bike models range from $1450 to $2350. “You can get a $7,000 [standard] mountain bike from Colorado,” Miller noted by comparison. “Originally we were trying to get prices as low as possible to open up to the masses.” It was also important that any bike shop could tune and repair the bikes. “Nothing proprietary . . . We choose to make it simple to do a repair or change out a tube.” The first model was a fold-up e-bike, still sold today. (“It’s a great option for people with RVs and boats, or you can put one in the trunk of your car,” said Miller.) The Step-Thru beach cruiser was inspired by Ventura’s beach vibe and Promenade. The mountain bike, called the Smoothie, is for the folks who “want to throw around a little bit more. It is a bit heavier” than a standard mountain bike. With the power assist the rider can stop battling steep uphill climbs and enjoy the ride, increasing access to trails that riders might not otherwise choose to tackle. Dogleg also offers a fat-tire model with a motorcycle seat and electric tricycles.

Together the three businesses — Hill Billy, Coast Cart and Dogleg — employ 12 people and serve as U.S. distributors for Yamaha mountain bikes and a cargo electric bike called Barletta (designed by the Domino’s Pizza company in Australia), which is popular in densely populated cities such as New York.

A family test trek

I grew up riding bikes, but it would not be my first choice for exercise or for getting around. When my family recently had an opportunity to test out some electric bikes, I was excited. First, our family stats. Ages range from 14 to 51, fairly healthy, no major joint or muscle injuries other than some fairly typical middle-age back issues for the oldest. Over the course of two days, I personally rode about 45 miles on flat paved bike paths, on roads, and on the up-and-down Shelf Road loop that requires a long and steep climb to get to the trail. We also did a battery range check ride to Foster Park

and back on the Ojai Valley Trail. My son and I did an evening ride, requiring the use of the bright front and rear lights (connected to the battery). I also did a morning milk run. On every ride I got exercise. On the longer rides with hills I breathed hard, sweated and used my glutes, core and thigh muscles. I also smiled the entire time. If you hit the mountain bike trails hard and love it, then maybe you won’t be interested, but if you’ve got a knee injury, an ankle problem that makes those shifts in pressure on the pedals painful, or similar issues, an e-bike might keep you riding longer and farther. Step Thru cruiser The Step Thru has seven gears and is marketed as a unisex bike. The design allows the rider to step through rather than swinging a leg high over the seat and middle bar to get on — helpful for those with

ogleg electric bikes are described as “pedal assist,” meaning that they help you along while pedaling. They have gears like a standard bike. The rider sets the gear, the level of assist and pedals along. When you are gliding along on a mostly flat path or trail, it feels the same as a regular bike, only more effortless. It’s similar to a treadmill: You still get a workout, setting the bike to the resistance level you want to make it easier or harder. The main difference riders may notice between electric bikes and standard bikes is the weight. Typical mountain bikes today range from about 21 to 30 pounds, depending on the frame materi-

al. E-bikes weigh in at about 50 pounds, with the battery weighing eight pounds. The maximum speed for all bikes, before the pedal assist shuts off, is 20 mph. The battery has a range of 20 to 30 miles depending on trail and rider factors. All three Dogleg models — fold-up, cruiser, mountain bike — have the same power system, a 36 volt, 250 watt brushless geared motor and a 36 volt (12ah) lithium ion battery. The battery has a lifespan of about 700 full charges, and takes three to four hours to fully recharge. One Dogleg customer who bought her first bike 10 years ago has replaced her battery twice. Today, the batteries cost about $400.

limited hip movement. The electric motor on the cruiser is installed in the rear wheel, which changes the center of gravity just a tad. The cruiser has a “twist-grip” throttle that allows you to engage the electric motor without pedaling. It’s designed to help get you started from a stop (very convenient) and works even on a hill. The bike has three settings for levels of pedal assist — low, medium and high. Riding this bike from near down-

town Ojai to Foster Park and back, 20 miles, using the low and medium settings for the downhill portion and using high assist all the way back (uphill the whole way) used up the battery. I had one “bar” left when I got home. All family members liked this bike, even my skeptical husband. He enjoyed the “twist and go” throttle and reported it worked great to cruise up small hills with just the Dogleg...continues on Page 14

Lithium ion batteries: Things to consider

T

hese batteries are in most electronic devices today, from smartphones to cars to gardening equipment, and signal a shift away from relying on fossil fuels for energy. But experts say that by 2025 a large surge of these batteries will be discarded (many incorrectly) in landfills unless major recycling efforts are made. Mining: The Lithium Triangle is located in the deserts of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, where the element is mined from the brines under the sand. Australia is another hotbed. Mined lithium gets sent to China for processing into battery grade lithium. (www.solar. com). There are carbon emissions related to lithium mining and battery production, but as lithium batteries replace internal combustion engines, there is a valuable carbon offset taking place. Recycling: Lithium ion batteries do not contain lead or cadmium, so they are not as overtly toxic as other battery types. They are also easier to recycle than other battery types and contain

valuable materials such as cobalt, aluminum, graphite and plastics. They should, however, never be discarded in the regular garbage or recycling bin, as they do present a fire hazard in extreme temperatures and under pressure. Technology and processes for recycling lithium ion batteries are improving all the time, and most e-bike sellers can assist customers with recycling. Dogleg, for example, takes back the batteries (a recycling firm collects them periodically). But right now the cost of recycling these batteries is about five times the cost of mining them. (3) Consider this: According to a study by The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (www.itdp.org), a global cycling activist organization working to combat climate change, if by 2050, 14 percent of travel on earth is on bicycles and e-bikes (today about six percent of miles traveled are on two-wheel pedaled vehicles) the Earth would see an 11 percent reduction in carbon emissions. throttle. Full Smoothie mountain bike This slick eight-speed bike is super fun to ride! It has a larger wheel (27.5 inch) than the cruiser and comes with full suspension, air shock (rear) and Rock Shox (front). It only has pedal assist, no throttle option. But this bike seems to have more get up and go than the cruiser, particularly noticeable on inclines. I tested both the cruiser and the mountain bike up two different steep hills. The cruiser got me to the top of both, but it felt like the engine was straining and it used a lot more charge than the mountain bike, which took me up with ease. For those who think you’re not going to get exercise with pedal assist, I’m here to say — you’re wrong. I

of fossil fuels. I also used the bike for a work-related outing. This bike is perfect for errands about town and local commuting. Take home message: e-bikes are awesome! A lot of fun, and well suited to a variety of needs and activity levels. I’m missing it already, and will be working one into the family budget. 1. “Pedal-Assist mountain bikes: A pilot study comparison of the exercise response, perception and beliefs of experienced mountain bikers,” Hall, Cougar; Hoj, Taylor, et al., Department of Public Health and Department of Technology and Engineering Studies, Brigham Young University. www.formative. jmir.org/2019/3/e13643/. 2. set the mountain bike to the proper gear and still had to push; it was just much more manageable (which made it more fun). Being able to get up the Signal Street hill with ease opened up a trail to me on a bike that I wouldn’t otherwise choose to ride on, even on a warm summer evening. The Bafang motor is in the pedal housing, centered on this bike. On my very first test ride, it felt more comfortable than the cruiser, with the power source being right underneath me — that’s the same as riding a standard bike. This bike has five power levels for pedal assist. A major difference we all noticed on the Smoothie was the better display compared to the cruiser. It is easier to read the battery power level and includes speed and distance. Even though this bike has the same range per specs as the cruiser, in our test rides, this bike seems to use less “juice” on the same trail as the cruiser, and got home after the 20-mile trip to Foster Park with more life left in the battery.

Martí to Herman Hesse. She earned bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree from Antioch University. Her travels took her from Latin America to Europe to Africa. “Travel really opens your eyes and broadens your horizon,” she says. “I speak English and Spanish, but in Germany I realized how hard it is for people not to know those languages, because I didn’t know German. Travel humbles you in a way that’s very positive.” Through art, Espinosa became an activist for social change, inspired by activist artists José Montoya, Javier Pacheco and John Trudell. In 1979, she became a member of the Royal Chicano Air Force, a Sacramento-based art collective which advanced the cause of the United Farm Workers movement. She also taught and performed with Danza Azteca on the Central Coast and in theater productions with Los Mascarones of Mexico City, Teatro Gusto in San Francisco, Teatro de la Calle in Sacramento, and Teatro In Lak ‘Ech of Oxnard. California State University, Channel Islands, recently installed her archives, including an extensive collection of rare art. It features original pieces by Chicana/o artists of the 1970s (José Montoya, Gilbert

“Magu” Luján, Estebán Villa and more), plus original documentation of the Chicano Teatro movement and her own works of poetry and Danza history. For Espinosa, art is inseparable from culture and the advancement of civilization. “Being able to express what you see, to give hope, is essential,” she asserts. “Art always has been at the forefront of change throughout history, because it connects to all of life.” And through art, Espinosa hopes to bring others, especially youth, not simply a better appreciation of art, but a better understanding of and respect for humanity. “In this day and age, with so much division and inequality, it’s important for those who are older to pass along to those coming after us not just a skill but an attitude that promotes compassion, love and respect for others,” she says, softly but firmly. “The beauty of all art is that it crosses all cultures. Woody Guthrie, John Lennon, Bob Marley — they all crossed boundaries of culture to express themselves through art. When you broaden your scope and take off your blinders, you grow as a person.” For more information on Luzmaria Espinosa, visit vcartscouncil. org/programs/poet-laureate.

Bringing the glories of Azu home I

5 O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE

by Kateri Wozny t’s no secret that a majority of us are missing our local hangout spots and favorite bartenders. Thank God the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has allowed wine, beer and cocktails to go, or we would’ve been lost by now! I decided to start my weekend off right by traveling to Azu Restaurant and Bar in Ojai to try its three craft cocktails: an Orchard Margarita, Spicy Margarita and Quarantini. At $10 per cocktail, I was sold. I placed my order online and headed for greener pastures (you can also have it delivered, but only within a certain distance). I haven’t traveled too far since the public health order came down in March and it felt liberating to drive my vehicle up the 33. The hills and mountains are so vibrant, I highly suggest getting up there to take a walk or take photos…with social distancing of course! Once I arrived downtown at Azu, there were cones instructing me to park in the “Food Pick-Up Zone Only” area outside the restaurant. A few minutes later, Jeremy Haffner, the head brew master of Ojai Valley Brewery (also located in the establishment), came out wearing a black bandana for a face mask and gloves. He handed me my drinks in plastic containers on a paper carry-out tray along with slices of lemon and lime. I also ordered a side of fries to savor with my cocktails. (ABC rules require restaurants to provide food along with drinks; Azu offers burgers, nachos, tacos, salmon and a few other snacks and entrees to

ADVICE GODDESS

by amy alkon

feeling she has to protect her, and she refuses to say anything to her. She now seems to blame me for being offended! Do I keep trying to get through to my wife? Demand my sister-in-law explain her actions? Talk to her husband? Threaten to go to the police? — Repulsed

Along Came Pawly

I’ve been married for two years to a woman whose sister is extremely manipulative. She finds reasons to touch me inappropriately — for example, “Your hair is so pretty. I have to pet it.” She puts an arm around my shoulders or comes toward me and puts both hands around my neck. This past weekend, I was seated on the couch, and she came up behind me, grabbed me, kissed me as far down my neck as she could, and swiftly left. All of this creeps me out, but because she always does this when other relatives are around, and I’m new to the family, I don’t feel I can snap at her or push her away. My wife alternates between being intimidated by her sister and

Family gatherings should not be indistinguishable from foreplay. It sounds like you’re being visited by the Dark Triad, which, sadly, is not an after-school club for young Batman and his friends. It’s a set of three separate but overlapping malevolent personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, which make for social and personal relationships that would more accurately be called “manipulationships.” Narcissism is reflected by egotism, a lack of empathy, and “grandiosity” (essentially a superiority complex — certainty of one’s greatness compared with the rest of us human worms slithering around). Machiavellianism was named for the 16th-century Italian philosopher/ political advisor Niccolo Machiavelli, who was basically “the tyrant whisperer” — if you take his book, “The

Prince,” seriously (and not, as some have suggested, as a work of satire). It pretty much advises, “Hey, Royals, do what you need to do, no matter how rotten, to stay in power!” The personality trait named for him is characterized by manipulativeness, callousness, self-interest, and what Dark Triad researcher Monica Koehn describes as “a ruthless lack of morality.” Finally, there’s psychopathy, which shows itself in antisocial behavior, selfishness, impulsivity, and a lack of remorse. And not surprisingly, there’s a fourth trait some researchers have suggested adding to the Triad: “everyday sadism,” reflected in getting pleasure out of harming others. Dark Triad traits lead to an aggressive, exploitative way of interacting with others, like that of your toxic, sexually abusive sister-in-law. Koehn observes, “All three traits are associated with the propensity to engage in repeated sexual advances also known as ‘sexual harassment’ and may have played a role in some of the noteworthy, alleged cases of sexual harassment discussed in the media.” Your sister-in-law is a skilled psychological puppetmaster who weaponizes others’ emotions to get away

with controlling and abusing them. In this case, your wife’s fears of displeasing her sister, and her companion desire to protect her, as well as your unsteadiness about your place in the family allow your sister-in-law to turn any family gathering into the Wild Touchyfeely West. Unfortunately, personality doesn’t come in a cartridge we can pull out and replace with another like in a gaming console. Chances are the only way to change Peppermint SocioPatty’s behavior is to change your own — while being mindful of what sneaky, reality-distorting saboteurs Dark Triad types can be. In short, you need to change your boundaries from silent to spoken — but without ever going the slightest bit angry or ugly. Also vitally important is talking only about your feelings and avoiding anything that sounds even the tiniest bit accusatory. (Go angry, ugly, and/or accusatory and she will run with it — transforming herself into the poor, persecuted waif-in-law abused by the scary, unstable, brute brother-in-law.) The next time she touches you, tell her this: “Just a little thing: I don’t feel comfortable being touched in caressing ways by anyone who is

not my wife.” In saying it this way — talking about your feelings — you are not accusing her of anything; you’re simply voicing an observation about the inner you. If she starts to squawk, if she tries to bait you into anger, or if she just tries to engage in a discussion, don’t bite. It’s not up for discussion (and you will lose to her every time, anyway). Calmly repeat your feelings line and walk away. You’ll show that you make a poor choice of victim, and family gatherings should stop doubling as a sexual grazing ground for the freerange sociopath-in-law. “Hospitality” is supposed to mean making your guests feel at home, not letting them feel you up at home. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

During a pandemic, is it possible to spread the news about your talents and offerings? Yes! That’s why I suggest you make sure that everyone who should know about you does indeed know about you. To mobilize your efforts and stimulate your imagination, I came up with colorful titles for you to use to describe yourself on your résumé or in promotional materials or during conversations with potential helpers. 1. Fire-Maker 2. Seed-Sower 3. Brisk Instigator 4. Hope Fiend 5. Gap Leaper 6. Fertility Aficionado 7. Gleam Finder 8. Launch Catalyst 9. Chief Improviser 10. Change Artist.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Of all the signs, Tauruses are among the least likely to be egomaniacs. Most of you aren’t inclined to indulge in fits of braggadocio or outbreaks of narcissism. (I just heard one of my favorite virtuoso Taurus singers say she wasn’t a very good singer!) That’s why one of my secret agendas is to tell you how gorgeous you are, to nudge you to cultivate the confidence and pride you deserve to have. Are you ready to leap to a higher octave of self-love? I think so. In the coming weeks, please use Taurus artist Salvador Dali’s boast as your motto: “There comes a moment in every person’s life when they realize they adore me.”

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

When I was young, I had a fun-filled fling with a smart Gemini woman who years later became a highly praised author and the authorized biographer of a Nobel Prize-winning writer. Do I regret our break-up? Am I sorry I never got to enjoy her remarkable success up close? No. As amazing as she was and is, we wouldn’t have been right for each other long-term. I am content with the brief magic we cre-

ated together, and have always kept her in my fond thoughts with gratitude and the wish for her to thrive. Now I invite you to do something comparable to what I just did, Gemini: Make peace with your past. Send blessings to the people who helped make you who you are. Celebrate what has actually happened in your life, and graduate forever from what might have happened but didn’t.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22):

“You have two ways to live your life, from memory or from inspiration,” writes teacher Joe Vitale. Many of you Cancerians favor memory over inspiration to provide their primary motivation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, although it can be a problem if you become so obsessed with memory that you distract yourself from creating new developments in your life story. But in accordance with astrological potentials and the exigencies of our Global Healing Crisis, I urge you, in the coming weeks, to mobilize yourself through a balance of memory and inspiration. I suspect you’ll be getting rich opportunities to both rework the past and dream up a future full of interesting novelty. In fact, those two imperatives will serve each other well.

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

Author Anne Lamott has some crucial advice for you to heed in the coming weeks. “Even when we’re most sure that love can’t conquer all,” she says, “it seems to anyway. It goes down into the rat hole with us, in the guise of our friends, and there it swells and comforts. It gives us second winds, third winds, hundredth winds.” I hope you’ll wield this truth as your secret magic in the coming weeks, Leo. Regard love not just as a sweet emotion that makes you feel good, but as a superpower that can accomplish practical miracles.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

Theologian St. Catherine of Siena observed, “To a brave person, good and bad luck are like her left and right hand. She uses both.” The funny thing is, Virgo, that in the past you have sometimes been more adept and proactive in using your bad luck, and less skillful at capitalizing on your good luck. But from what I can tell, this curious problem has been diminishing for you in 2020—and will continue to do so. I expect that in the coming weeks, you will welcome and harness your good luck with brisk artistry.

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

“I’m curious about everything, except what people have to say about me,” says actor Sarah Jessica Parker. I think that’s an excellent strategy for you to adopt in the coming weeks. On the one hand, the whole world will be exceptionally interesting, and your ability to learn valuable lessons and acquire useful information will be at peak. On the other hand, one of the keys to getting the most out of the wealth of catalytic influences will be to cultivate nonchalance about people’s opinions of you.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

On the kids’ TV show Sesame Street, there’s a muppet character named Count von Count. He’s a friendly vampire who loves to count things. He is 6,523,730 years old and his favorite number is 34,969—the square root of 187. The Count was “born” on November 13, 1972, when he made his first appearance on the show, which means he’s a Scorpio. I propose we make him your patron saint for the next four weeks. It’s an excellent time to transform any threatening qualities you might seem to have into harmless and cordial forms of expression. It’s also a favorable phase

for you to count your blessings and make plans that will contribute to your longevity.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“No one ever found wisdom without also being a fool,” writes novelist Erica Jong. “Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great,” says singer Cher. “He dares to be a fool, and that is the first step in the direction of wisdom,” declared art critic James Huneker. “Almost all new ideas have a certain aspect of foolishness when they are first produced,” observed philosopher Alfred North Whitehead. According to my analysis of astrological omens, you’re primed to prove these theories, Sagittarius. Congratulations!

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

“Few people have a treasure,” writes Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro. She’s speaking metaphorically, of course—not referring to a strongbox full of gold and jewels. But I’m happy to inform you that if you don’t have a treasure, the coming months will be a favorable time to find or create it. So I’m putting you on a High Alert for Treasure. I urge you to be receptive to and hungry for it. And if you are one of those rare lucky ones who already has a treasure, I’m happy to say that you now have the power and motivation to appreciate it even more and learn how to make even better use of it. Whether you do or don’t yet have the treasure, heed these further words from Alice Munro: “You must hang onto it. You must not let yourself be waylaid, and have it taken from you.”

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

At this moment, there are 50 trillion cells in your body, and each of them is a sentient being in its own right. They act together as

a community, consecrating you with their astonishing collaboration. It’s like magic! Here’s an amazing fact: Just as you communicate with dogs and cats and other animals, you can engage in dialogs with your cells. The coming weeks will be a ripe time to explore this phenomenon. Is there anything you’d like to say to the tiny creatures living in your stomach or lungs? Any information you’d love to receive from your heart or your sex organs? If you have trouble believing this is a real possibility, imagine and pretend. And have fun!

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

“A myriad of modest delights constitute happiness,” wrote poet Charles Baudelaire. I think that definition will serve you well in the coming weeks, Pisces. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, there won’t be spectacular breakthroughs barging into your life; I expect no sublime epiphanies or radiant transformations. On the other hand, there’ll be a steady stream of small marvels if you’re receptive to such a possibility. Here’s key advice: Don’t miss the small wonders because you’re expecting and wishing for bigger splashes. Homework: What has been your favorite lesson during our Global Healing Crisis? NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2000286183 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Tips For Growing Easy Pot

Have you ever thought about growing your own cannabis? In California, adults 21 years of age or older are allowed to grow up to 6 plants, and with a doctor’s recommendation you can grow as many as indicated on your prescription. With the state laws in our favor and summertime approaching us, growing your own pot could be easier than you think. Dark Heart’s “Easy Pot” is an autoflowering cannabis plant, grown from feminized seedlings. A feminized seedling is a small, immature plant that is sprouted from a feminized seed. “Feminized” means that the breeder used a process called “feminization” to create seeds that are 99.5% female. The “Easy Pot” stands roughly 15-18 inches in height and is surrounded by a “tomato cage” for proper support. They are sold in a 2.5 gallon pot where they will remain for the duration of their life. This means they do not need to be transplanted. They will start flowering shortly after you bring them home and will be ready to harvest in around 40-60 days. A regular growth cycle outdoors from seeds or clones can take up to 5 months for a plant to reach its flowering stage. Autoflowers are known to be hardier and less finicky than regular cannabis plants, which makes them perfect for beginner growers!

Here’s why Easy Pot is great for beginners, hobby growers and anyone interested in growing cannabis: • Fun to grow! Each of these vigorous plants will produce beautiful flowers in a wide variety of conditions. However, the better the conditions, the better your result! • Just add water: Soil mix is pre-charged with slow release fertilizer that provides complete plant nutrition every time you water.

• Proven genetics: Stable seeds from award winning breeders means you’ll have a healthy plant that will outperform your expectations. • Attractive: Pot design is attractive and modern, and fits right into your space. This is a must-have garden varietal!

HOW IT WORKS Autoflowering means that the plant will flower automatically when ready and is not photoperiod sensitive like normal cannabis plants are. Plants germinated from autoflower seedlings start to flower after a short vegetative period of 2 to 4 weeks. Autoflowering plants are good for both indoor and outdoor growing. When you are growing in an indoor environment, autoflower seedlings will allow you to start and finish your cycle even more rapidly.

Autoflowering plants do not rely on photoperiods to trigger their flowering cycle like traditional cannabis plants do. In order to produce healthy yields they need a sufficient amount of light during their lifecycle. Depending on the time of year your autoflower plant can do well both indoors and outdoors. During the spring and summer months a well lit windowsill or sunroom could do the trick indoors. Outdoors, any well lit area of your outdoor garden would suffice. During the fall and winter months the weather can be a bit cold and could affect the overall yield of your harvest. During this time, keeping your plant under light indoors would likely produce the best results.

You can find Dark Heart’s autoflowering “Easy Pot” available at Wheelhouse Dispensary in Port Hueneme. For more information visit wheelhouseph.com or call 805-382-0420. 20 —
