Museum’s new space to bring education and beauty from compost and stones by David Goldstein

T

his summer, the Museum of Ventura County will have a new, outdoor exhibit and gathering space in the formerly empty area facing Santa Clara Street. On Monday, Vincent Amorosino, a local stone mason and artist, lugged into place the last of a pile of scattered boulders, most of which he had previously formed into large, raised bed planters. The planters, filled with a blend of native soil and compost supplied by Agromin and enhanced with compost tea provided by Ojai’s Center for Regenerative Agriculture, will grow the Native American “three sisters” crops. Some of those three crops, consisting of corn, beans and squash, will eventually be replaced by perennials and medicinal plants traditionally used by the Chumash. Amorosino and fellow artists on the project, Jason Brock and Kevin Carman, work for Art City, a stoneyard, sculpture studio, art gallery and garden on Ventura’s Westside, owned by renowned local artist Paul Lindhard. Lindhard produces stone installations on a monumental scale across the United States, but his latest vision, coming into formation this week at the Museum of Ventura County, uses stones, some of which were originally part of the Ventura Mission orchard walls, to frame plants. In addition to the raised bed crops, sunflowers will line the south wall of the museum and squash plants will flow from conical-shaped planters. Art City Studios and the Ventura County Compost Network partnered with the museum to coordinate this display, originally envisioned as a contest, wherein nine contestants would vie for a prize by growing the biggest sunflowers. As the project developed, organizers realized a cooperative, community workforce, including volunteers closely supervised by experienced gardeners, would be more appropriate. Gardeners will continue to follow organic growing methods. Denise Sindelar, deputy director of the museum, said the museum worked with these community groups to initiate this project as part of an effort to turn a long-neglected space into an educational attraction and community resource. She said outdoor areas of the museum will open June 3, and the interior galleries are expected to open July 1. 10 — — May 27, 2021

0527_VCReporter_NEWS.indd 10

Central to this exhibit is the soil itself, as the compost is derived mostly from Ventura County’s own yard clippings. Receiving yard clippings from curbside carts collected by E.J. Harrison and Sons and other recycling haulers, Agromin turns these discards into mulch and compost at sites near Oxnard, Simi Valley and locations outside the county. Using the compost, blended with native soil and other material to create crops and beautiful flowers, makes the activity not just an artistic statement, but also an opportunity for community education and enjoyment. In addition to promoting compost with this activity and exhibit, the Museum of Ventura County makes compost from food scraps at their Santa Paula branch, the Agriculture Museum. “We have three composting bins (two plastic, one straw bale) where we recycle much of our vegetable garden clippings as well as our clippings from our native gardens,” said Elena Waller, the Agriculture Museum manager. Additional yard clippings from museum grounds are collected by Athens Services in Santa Paula and hauled for composting elsewhere. The Agriculture Museum also has a worm box, purchased through the city of Ventura’s vermicompost bin discount program, and uses it to turn food scraps from their break room into a high-quality soil amendment.

“University of California Master Gardeners are responsible for feeding our squirmy friends” in the worm box, according to Waller. The Master Gardeners also tend the vegetable garden and maintain 13 raised beds of plants at the Santa Paula site. As the museum reopens in June, staff and docents will be available Wednesday mornings at the Santa Paula site for questions about the gardens. Currently, the Master Gardeners work Wednesdays, 8-11 a.m., and during the pandemic people have been coming to the museum gate to ask questions while observing social distancing requirements. On June 16, 9-10:30 a.m., a workshop at the Agricultural Museum (926 Railroad Ave., Santa Paula) will focus on how to maintain a vegetable garden, including information on composting. Reservations through the Master Gardener website are required; visit ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=34927. In Brief County promoting protection of monarch butterflies

Last month the Ventura County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a policy protecting monarch butterfly habitat and promoting the planting of their main food source, native milkweed, on county-owned properties. The item was brought forward by Board Chair Linda Parks (Dist. 2). In a written statement, she said the policy is consistent with recent revisions the board made to zoning ordinances that “require, among other things, use of pesticide-free, native plants, and planting of flowering plants that support pollinator insects such as bees and butterflies.” An emphasis on native milkweed is important because non-native varieties flower at different times and can interrupt the patterns of pollinators. “Ventura County is really important for the recovery of western monarchs. The planting of pesticide-free native milkweed in our area is vital to their recovery,” said Dr. Catherine Darst with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The county is one of several coastal areas that provide winter respite for the monarchs and population counts have been declining. Two decades ago, the population was estimated to be about 1.2 million; today it’s stated at about 2000. The board also will be adding protection of western monarchs to its state and federal legislative agenda. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently labeled the western monarch as a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Public comment on oil well stimulation phase-out

The California Department of Conservation, Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGem), the state oil and gas regulatory agency, has released draft regulations that will end permitting for well stimulation treatments by 2024. The public comment period on the draft regulations is active now through July 4, 2021. Written comments can be submitted to CalGEMRegulations@conversation.ca.gov. Those with questions regarding the comment period can

call 916-322-3080. The draft regulation language is online at www. conservation.ca.gov/index/ Documents/Discussion%20 Draft-WST%20phase-out%20 final.pdf. California State Parks studying sea level rise adaptation

The California State Parks system has released a guide on how the department will approach coastal management as climate change brings sea level rise and extreme weather events. Initial funding and implementation of the plan is going to the San Diego region, but the Parks department reports that the “vulnerability assessment template” in the guide can be applied to all coastal districts in the State Park System. “Like many places along California’s coastline, several coastal park units have already experienced the impacts of severe erosion and flooding,” said Armando Quintero, director of California State Parks. “State Parks views these impacts as an opportunity to learn more about sea level rise now and adapt future actions to help preserve our treasured public lands so future generations can enjoy them.” The guide lays out methods for the department to incorporate sea level rise issues into ongoing department planning and project development. The strategy of the parks department says “holistic” assessments that examine public access, recreation, natural and cultural resources must be part of responding to sea level rise issues at sites under the department’s jurisdiction. VC COVID-19 Update

On May 24, Ventura County reported 53 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend and 9,444 new tests. According to county reports, 67% of those in the county 18 and over, and 63% of those 12 and over, have received the first dose of the vaccine. Vaccinations are now available without an appointment. All residents 12 and over are eligible to receive free vaccinations. A large vaccine clinic welcoming walk-ins is still active at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura. Other sites are listed online at www. vcrecovers.com. Appointments can be made at myturn.ca.gov or by calling 833-422-4255. — Kimberly Rivers

Ventura Boat Rentals’ latest offering will have visitors swanning around the harbor this summer by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

nshaffer@timespublications.com

All photos courtesy of Ventura Harbor Village

ost locals (and plenty of tourists) are familiar with Ventura Boat Rentals. If you’re looking for recreation on the water at Ventura Harbor, it’s your one-stop shop for things that float. Kayaks, stand up paddle boards and pedal craft are all available to those who enjoy exploring the harbor under their own steam. For a little more oomph, electric boats provide options for small groups (up to four people), a crowd (as many as 12 passengers) and everything in between. If you really want to boat in style, consider a private charter (numerous options, including cash bars, are available). The latest offering from Ventura Boat Rentals, however, is already a favorite — and will undoubtedly be a hit this summer. Swan-shaped pedal boats have alit at the harbor, and they are a delightful flock: bright white, gracefully designed, mint condition and easy to operate. They’re also the perfect size for four people to sit comfortably — although five can manage fairly well if one is a small child. As of this writing, it costs $40-45 an hour to rent the boat regardless of the number of people, making this cheaper than many group activities. Boats are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between rides by Ventura Boat Rentals’ friendly and knowledgeable staff, so while we all wait for when life can truly return to “normal,” this is a wonderful outdoor activity that’s very safe, and naturally lends itself to social distancing. On a quiet weekday afternoon, our family of four decided to try our hands (or, rather, feet) at swanning around. Two seats in front have the pedals; passengers that sit in the back can simply luxuriate and take in the sights. With two teenagers in the house, my husband and I have more

than paid our dues — and thus we set the kids to work on the pedals while we stretched out behind. Surprisingly, there’s ample seat and leg room, even for my long-legged husband. An overhead canopy kept the sun off while we tooled around, delighting in the sparkling water, the boats and a view of picturesque Ventura Harbor Village. It was a very stable ride, and since the boat moves relatively slowly and quietly, it’s easier to approach wildlife. We paddled right up to fluffy young seagulls, and kept our eyes peeled for harbor seals and other critters. It’s true that the kids’ legs got a workout (especially once the wind picked up), but the swan boats maneuver more efficiently than others I’ve tried. Steering is basic — a handle between the two front seats moves the rudder left and right — and a bit crude, but it’s perfectly fine for a fun, low-impact outing. The whole point is to relax and enjoy; save speed and goals for a different kind of adventure. For our family, this was an easy escape from the screens, the house and the mind-numbing routine of

school, work, chores, sleep. Yes, there was plenty of squabbling (especially concerning who got to steer), but just as much laughter and playful banter — all of which made for some fond memories. We fully intend to make some return trips this summer, hopefully in the evening (currently available only on weekends and by appointment, although that might change) when I can revel in Ventura Harbor Village all lit up. The swan boats are decked out in lights, too, so some sparkling summer splendor is guaranteed. Swans not your thing? Dragon and duck boats are set to hit the water over Memorial Day Weekend, and will no doubt be popular with younger kids. Regardless of which option you choose, Ventura Boat Rentals Manager Cooper and his team will set you up for a fun, stress-free mini-holiday at sea! FUN FOR ALL AGES

Relaxation, fun and adventure at Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday

T

he great outdoors, amazing accommodations, a pool, a creek and activities galore — everything you want in a summer camp experience. Ventura County is truly privileged to have a single location that offers all of this: Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday in Santa Paula. First things first: There are RV hookups here, but this KOA is so much more! There are also sites to pitch a tent, cabins to rent, teepees, covered wagons and safari-style tents, too. Whatever your camping comfort level, Ventura Ranch KOA can accommodate you. If you’re fine with roughing it, bring your RV or set up your own tent in a campsite with fire pits and picnic tables. Or, leave your tent at home and bed down in a teepee or covered wagon, which offer thick sleeping pads, indoor chairs and tables and even bunk beds. Safari tents are rustically elegant affairs with rugs, chairs, comfortable beds and lamps. For the ultimate glamping experience, there are cabins in a variety of sizes and sleeping arrangements — some even have double lofts and rooftop patios — as well as refrigerators, stoves and private bathrooms.

Glamping it up in a teepee. “We get a lot of people who have never camped before,” says owner Scott Cory. Cory is personally responsible for this versatile and all-inclusive experience. A native of San Diego, Cory spent some years working for the corporate branch of Kampgrounds of America (KOA) in Montana before coming to Ventura County. “I learned what did and didn’t work,” he says of that time. KOA is a franchise, with individuals owning and operating properties independently, although KOA sets certain standards and provides marketing materials. Cory pur20 —

chased the Ventura Ranch KOA 10 years ago, when it was a bit rundown and bare bones. While he has maintained much of the natural beauty of the area, he used his experience (tempered by no small amount of creativity) to redesign the camping concept and offer customers more than just a place to hook up their motorhomes. “Every year we added more,” Cory explains, noting that over time, the site was embellished with tents, cabins, colorful teepees and adorable covered wagons, to bring in customers that didn’t own RVs but relished the idea of an outdoor escape that promised a respite from the hectic pace of city life. It’s become a favorite with locals, Los Angelenos and outsiders alike: Cory estimates that about half of his customers are from Ventura County or nearby, while the other half hail from locations further away. He has had guests from 23 countries around the world. Ventura Ranch KOA boasts more than just a beautiful environment. The standard “campsite” pool was remodeled to resemble something you might find at a resort, with a roomy pool deck, lounges and umbrellas. There’s also a climbing wall, playground, cornhole, jumping pillow and gem mining experience. Crafts such as tie-dying and activities like outdoor movie nights and Bigfoot Adventure Walks (a delightful after-dark experience where kids of all ages can search for “signs” of the elusive Sasquatch) add to the fun. Recently, Cory introduced the Ventura Ranch World Labyrinth — one of the largest boulder labyrinths in the world, which is nearly a mile to the center and back. Even if you skip all of the organized activities, there’s so much at Ventura Ranch KOA to explore. The Santa Paula River is full year round, wildlife abounds (keep an eye out for colorful peacocks!), the Topatopa Mountains make a majestic backdrop, the starry sky above is free of urban light pollution and the natural oak woodlands surrounding the space are beautiful and unspoiled. Cory lost a number of trees and campsites during the December 2017 Thomas Fire, but you wouldn’t know it, so well cared for is this lovely 76-acre space. One of Ventura Ranch KOA’s greatest claims to fame is its zip line and ropes course — the only one currently available in Ventura County. In 2017, it was a simple affair of two lines. After Thomas turned it to ash, Cory took the opportunity to update, expand and redesign it. Now, it’s an extensive network of cables, nets and bridges suspended among the trees. Some sections are easy, others will definitely challenge your balance, but all are a lot of fun — and completely safe, thanks to

Cory’s state-of-the-technology cable and harness system. After Cory and his staff get you harnessed, gloved and helmeted up, you’ll receive a thorough briefing and Keeping cool at the pool. practice run (on a lowto-the-ground segment that’s not too challenging). When you’re ready, you’ll be connected to the network proper — and once your safety hook is on the cable, it won’t come off, meaning it’s virtually impossible to fall or hurt yourself. Rest assured, Cory or one of his staff will be in easy reach if at any time you need help or want to cut the experience short. The course starts off with some easy, short zips and lively, but not too wild, bridges and nets. Things get a little more wobbly, to challenge your balance, and the zips get a bit longer. But there are cables to grab to help you keep your equilibrium, and stops between sections, where you can catch your breath and mentally prepare for the next stage. You’re safely harnessed in at all times, so there’s no danger — making it easy to overcome your nerves and give it a go. That first step off the platform into thin air is the hardest. After that, it’s a breeze — and an exhilarating thrill, taking you through the tree canopy and above the campground. The whole course takes about 45 minutes to complete (depending on the size of your group and how quickly you maneuver through the segments), but it passes quickly — and you’ll probably be eager to do it again. Whether you relish soaring among the treetops (safely and securely), exploring the creek or chilling around the campfire under a star-studded sky that feels a million miles away from civilization, Ventura Ranch KOA is the perfect staycation destination. Close enough for an easy holiday, unique enough to feel like you’ve gotten out of your routine, and special enough to make for lasting memories. Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday, 7400 Pine Grove Road, Santa Paula, 805-933-3200, www.VenturaRanchKOA.com. RV sites: $65-$105 Tents, teepees and wagons: $48-$149 Safari tents and cabins: $149-$269 Zip line and ropes course will open to the public this summer, starting at $49 per person ($39 for guests staying at the KOA). Reserve online or call 805-933-3200.

From the mountains to the sea Summer activities to get out and about

W

by Kimberly Rivers

kimberly@vcreporter.com

hile summertime is certainly a good time for kids to experience some downtime and even boredom, it’s also a great time to get outside, explore a new activity or hone skills in a current pursuit. With the Los Padres National Forest in our backyard and the ocean out front, Ventura County has amazing opportunities for adventure and plain old exploring. Even if as adults we don’t get the summer off, taking time to get out and try something new, or get back to doing something that we love, can help shake off the winter (pandemic?) blues. Summer camps are great ways to get kids active, but even just heading out on a bike ride in an area you’ve never visited, taking an outdoor yoga class in a nearby park or signing up for a plein air painting class can reinvigorate you, and help alleviate the stress and disappointments of the previous year.

Hit the waves

Yes, there are plenty of opportunities for Summer Surf Camp with Wave Heart Surf (www.waveheartsurf.com) near Emma Wood State Beach, or Ohana Surf Camp at Marina Park (www.ohanasurfcamp.com). But skilled surfers who are looking for new breaks can go farther afield to the Channel Islands for a longer surfing safari experience. Several islands have breaks. Check swell directions for the best time to visit certain sides of the islands (www.nps.gov/chis/ planyourvisit/surfing.htm). If the ocean is calling but surfing may not be your thing (or you’re looking for something new) consider sailing. Ventura Yacht Club offers sailing summer camps for kids and teens (www.venturayachtclub.org) and Sailing Time offers adult sailing lessons out of Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard (www.sailtime.com).

Ventura County Artists painting group

On the rocks

If sticking to solid ground is more your thing, you can get climbing with Ojai Rock Climbing. Alex Bury owns and runs ORC with certified guides and a flawless safety record. The company welcomes first-time climbers and kids and those transitioning from indoor climbing. Bury has made dozens of first ascents in the Ventura County backcountry and knows the area well. Individual and group climbing trips are available and include equipment rental, one-on-one instruction and a site tour. Group rates range from $130-$150 per person; call for single rates. 805-850-8364. www.ojairockclimbing.com.

Brush up

Painting can be such a freeing activity and can easily be done outdoors. Ventura County Artists, a group based in Camarillo that communicates through MeetUp, has meetings planned throughout the summer, including some outdoor painting groups. Reach out and grab a brush. (www.meetup.com/Ventura-County-Artists/)

On the mat

Ojai Rock Climbing

Ventura Pop Up Yoga offers Yoga in the Wild classes at various outdoor locations. Marina Park and Solimar Beach are two spots where classes are frequently held (www.venturapopupyoga.com). Grassroots Yoga is another studio for an outside stretch and strength experience, with sessions at Camino Real Park in Ventura (www.grassrootsyogaventura.com).

In the saddle

Horseback riding is the quintessential summer camp experience and many ranches and trainers plan camps, which fill up quickly. Field Stone Riding Club in Moorpark only has available spots in their Tiny Tots horse camp (www. fieldstoneridingclub.com/summer-camp) while Infinite Horsemanship in Ojai is booking day campers ages 8 and up into week-long camp sessions geared mostly for beginner through intermediate riders (www.infinitehorsemanship. com). Western Trail Rides, also in Ojai, is scheduling small group camps beginning June 14 (/www.westerntrailrides. org/v2/). For adults who want to get out in the saddle, Ojai Valley Trail Riding Company offers day rides in the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, Ventura River Preserve. (www.ojaivalleytrailridingcompany.com).

Take aim

The simplicity of just walking in nature is sometimes forgotten as an incredibly valuable and relaxing activity, and taking a break from modern contraptions is freeing. Another way to feel free is let it fly — an arrow that is. The Conejo Valley Archers work to promote the continuation of the art and skill of archery and host a learning session most Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a $5 per person fee, all equipment, use of the archery range and instruction is provided. Minimum age is 8 years old. The public range is located at 4651 Tapo Canyon Road in Simi Valley. Check the group’s Facebook page to confirm any schedule changes, possible closures or other announced changes. Reservations are not required (www. cvarchers.com).

Free outside fun With playgrounds, trails and more, local parks are the perfect place for celebrating summer by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

A

neighborhood park is more than a green space. It’s a meeting place, a spot to sit under a shady tree, a location for a birthday party or family reunion, and an area where kids of all ages can climb, slide, crawl and jump. Many parks provide a connection to the natural landscape around us. Ventura County is home to some fabulous parks that are open and ready for summer explorations. Here is a spotlight list of just a few of the public parks across the county. Get out and find your favorite spot.

CAMARILLO

MOORPARK

Freedom Park | 480 Skyway Drive Check your bike’s tire pressure and load up the bike rack. Grab your hockey bag, because this park has it all: a BMX dirt track with jumps and a skate hockey arena. If that’s not enough, it also has the more standard amenities of baseball diamonds and horseshoe pits.

Campus Canyon | 6564 Collins Drive This is a somewhat secluded neighborhood park tucked up against the Moorpark College Campus and America’s Teaching Zoo. Wide-open grass fields and challenging play structures with large trees and ample parking combine to make a fun park day. Check the zoo’s schedule for a visit to the animals!

HERITAGE VALLEY SANTA PAULA/FILLMORE/PIRU Steckel Park | 8080 Mistletoe Road, Santa Paula A county park that’s on the smaller side, but has lots to recommend it. The large, sprawling oak trees are as pretty as they are shady, although there’s an open patch of grass near the pavilion that offers plenty of sunlight if you crave it. Follow a short winding path through the vegetation down to Santa Paula Creek, or have lunch at a picnic table. The big draw here: an aviary, where doves, cockatiels, love birds, a cockatoo and more can be viewed. There are some peacocks in cages, but don’t be surprised if you see a few running around wild, too. Two Rivers Park | 1110 River St., Fillmore A park with wide open spaces under a wide open sky. Play structures, ball fields and a skate park make this park a perfect place for many uses. Ideal for kite flying! Warring Park | 802 Orchard Road, Piru Historical accounts say that in 1769 priests with Gaspar de Portolá came to a village of a tribe of Chumash people living at this spot. The park is a California Historical Landmark. Today, the park, along Piru Creek, has a baseball diamond, barbecue pits, plenty of shade trees and some fun playground structures.

Freedom Park, Camarillo 28 —

OJAI Libbey Park | 210 S. Signal St. Take a break in the heart of Ojai from the bustle of wine tasting and bohemian-chic shopping and let the kids get their wiggles out at this park nestled among the oaks. The play structures are fun and challenging even for teens, with meandering paths that connect to the Ojai Valley Trail.

OXNARD Oxnard State Beach and Oxnard Beach Park | 1601 Harbor Blvd. Plenty of parking, easy access to park and beach. Lots of grass. But it all pales in comparison to the piratethemed playground, complete with two ships and a friendly sea serpent that kids of all ages love to climb on. Ahoy maties! Plaza Park | 500 S. C St. In the heart of downtown Oxnard, this historic park remains a key gathering place for family and community celebrations and events. A great people-watching and picnic spot with grass and benches to enjoy the day.

Steckel Park, Santa Paula

Southwest Community Park | 2500 W. Fifth St. A wide-open community park with a large, modern play structure in the middle of several picnic and barbecue spots. Bring your mitt, bat or soccer ball.

SIMI VALLEY Corriganville Park | 7001 Smith Road This park offers four trail loops winding through oak glens and among rocky canyons. A wildlife corridor path and interpretive trail developed by a local Boy Scout troop offer great places to exercise, breathe and get moving. The site of Old West films from the past, you can picture stagecoaches and horses galloping along the wide paths. Mayfair Park | 2550 Caldwell St. Yes, it can get hot in Simi Valley, but this tree-filled park offers some cool spots to sit, lay on a picnic blanket or climb on dinosaur bones. The dino-themed playground areas are a big hit with kids.

THOUSAND OAKS Conejo Creek North Park | 1379 E. Janss Road This well-maintained park space has multiple play structure areas, several water features and a natural creek area for kids and adults to explore. Old Meadows Park | 1600 Marview Drive Surrounded by glorious oaks and featuring a wide, grassy area, this is a beautiful park for running around, soccer and picnics. What makes Old Meadows really special, however, is its Dreamcatcher Playground. Continued on Page 32

Free outside fun Continued from Page 28

Completed in August 2017, it was designed as a disability-sensitive and interactive play area for stimulating the senses. An elevated sand table, miniature village, backhoe digger, human-scale vertical xylophone and more allow kids of all ages and abilities to explore to their heart’s content. A woodland-themed area features adorable toadstools to climb on, too. This spot gets hot in the summer months, but shade canopies overhead help kiddos keep their cool. Sapwi Trails Community Park | 2100 Scenicpark St. Grab your helmet, because the jumps at Sapwi Trails are big! This bike park opened in 2018 and is a popular spot for enthusiasts. Those not quite up for the track will enjoy watching riders of all ages or you can bring your discs (sometimes called Frisbees) to take on the disc golf course. The park also features natural habitat restoration sites, so it’s important to adhere to all postings about off-limits areas while you’re exploring the trails.

Mayfair Park, Simi Valley

VENTURA Arroyo Verde Park | 5000 Foothill Road (corner of Foothill and Day roads) This popular city park is recovering well from the Thomas Fire. Construction is underway for the new inclusive playground area that will be open this fall. The park offers 132 acres tucked into a canyon providing great hillside access with hiking trails and the all-important green grass for picnicking, napping or a game of Frisbee. In the morning, dog owners gather to let their pooches off leash for exercise and socialization. Kellogg Park | At Kellogg St. and N. Ventura Ave. Kellogg Park provides fun and modern play structures for adventurous and curious kids, with a small amphitheatre and pathways to explore in West Ventura. This new community treasure has quickly become a popular play and gathering spot for the Westside.

Sapwi Trails Community Park, Thousand Oaks

Marina Park | 2950 Pierpont Blvd. Taking the park to the beach. This 12-acre spot provides park play on the sand with a pirate ship, zip line and swings with an ocean view. The jetties are good for tidepooling.

Ventura skates

Skateboarding across Ventura County by Kimberly Rivers

V

kimberly@vcreporter.com

entura County’s unique style gets amplified with summer. The weather, the sun, the surf and skating. To the non-skate set it seems like the world of kids on boards dodging pedestrians (and sometimes the cops) is way too sketchy. But for those who are working to make ollies, flip tricks, and land the perfect nollie, it’s a way of life. “No Skateboarding Allowed” signs are still prominent in many public spaces, but over the past several decades local governments (frequently compelled by families organizing and forcing the issue) have realized the value of this physical sport both as a healthy activity for kids (ok, some adults skate, too) and an economic driver for tourism and retail. Ventura County is home to many skateparks and skate shops. The pandemic saw a movement started by Ventura-based Serio Skateshop to have skateboarding named an essential mode of transportation so that shops could remain open. The effort mirrored the long-fought battle that brought the iconic “Skateboarding is not a crime” bumper stickers onto suburban vehicles across California. Even so, the Skateboarding is Essential movement didn’t gain much traction: Serio was forced to close it’s shop, moving to all online. Skateboarding, nevertheless, remains a Ventura County staple. Here’s a quick grind of skate parks in the area.

Art in the Park returns to Ojai

T

by Emily Dodi he Ojai Art Center kicks off its 44th annual Art in the Park celebration Memorial Day weekend. And there is plenty to celebrate. “We are thrilled because it makes us feel like things are getting back to normal,” explains Teri Mettala, director of the Ojai Art Center. The free event takes place May 29-30 in Libbey Park and will feature more than 60 fine artists from across California. “It’s a great opportunity for artists, locals, tourists and art lovers of all ages to meet, browse and buy,” say the event’s organizers. COVID19 protocols will be in effect, including social distancing requirements and the request that face coverings be worn. Due to pandemic restrictions, this year’s festival won’t include live musical performances or the selling of alcoholic beverages. “Next year,” Mettala says, adding that the event will still be a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. “I think it’ll just be so nice to be out and to see artists and just stroll around.” That’s a widely shared sentiment, especially since last year’s Art in the Park was canceled and this year’s event wasn’t confirmed until just a few weeks ago. Even with the changes that come with the times, Mettala says “the essence of Art in the Park, the heart and soul of it, will be the same. That’s what matters. It’s a really great little festival.” Although social distancing protocols mean fewer vendors than in previous years, Art in the Park will host many returning artists as well as some new ones. “The quality of the art is really high,” Mettala points out. Finding talented artists who want to participate wasn’t difficult. “So many artists are eager to get out of the house and be part of a show.” In keeping with tradition there will be a children’s area and a booth sponsored by Ojai’s Nordhoff High School. An exciting new addition will be a booth hosted by Ojai Studio Artists, the

organization behind the town’s popular annual studio tour; it will showcase the works of several different local artists. The Ojai Art Center is busy getting back to “normal” in the safest way possible. Beyond Art in the Park, OAC will show Restoration, (June 5-30), a photography exhibit that “celebrates a return to normalcy with a reminder of what we have been through and what we are looking forward to.” OAC’s theatre branch will present Family Furniture June 25-July 18. Of this family drama by A.R. Gurney, the New York Times said “a sense of dangerous change seems to hang threateningly in the atmosphere, like a thunderstorm that just won’t burst.” It’s directed by Tom Eubanks and features Benjamin Wilson, Buddy Wilds, Kisea Kattika, Ashley Osler and Amber Shea Hodge. (COVID regulations may mean limited seating, but things could change if restrictions are lifted on June 15.) After the year we’ve all had, it’s time to get out and enjoy. Go have some fun. Safely. Art in the Park takes place May 29-30, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Libbey Park, 210 S. Signal St., Ojai. For more information, call 805-646-0117 or visit www.ojaiartcenter.org.

COIN SHORTAGE ZIP CODE DISTRIBUTION NOTICE

■ CALIFORNIA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: Pictured above and watched closely by guards are protected U.S. Coin Packages containing the valuable unsearched Vault Bags that everyone will be trying to get. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the early 1800’s, so you better believe at just $980 these Unsearched Vault Bags are a real steal.

Who gets the U.S. Gov’t issued coins: Only U.S. residents who find their zip code listed on the Distribution List below are getting the U.S. Gov’t issued coins. If you find your zip code listed below call: 1-800-868-9527 UV3996 “The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Mar y Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, back in circulation means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because a f ter the ba gs were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins the dates were never searched and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Withrow. “But don’t thank the Government. As Executive Advisor to Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins back in circulation, I’m being asked how

much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Withrow. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the

National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t R1021

That’s because each unsearched Vault Bag is loaded with over 100 highly sought after collector coins dating clear back to the 1800’s including iconic Morgan Silver Dollars, a historic Peace Silver Dollar, stunning Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars, the collectible Silver Eisenhower Dollars, spectacular Silver Liberty Head Half and Quarter Dollars, rarely seen Silver Franklin Half Dollars, high demand President Kennedy Silver Half Dollars, beautiful Silver Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars, American Bicentennial Quarters, rare Liberty V Nickels, one cent Historic Wheat Coins including 1943 “Steel Cents”, one of the beautiful Winged Liberty Head Dimes, scarce Indian Head one cent U.S. coins and the last ever minted Buffalo Nickels. “With all these collectible U.S Gov’t Issued coins up for grabs we’re doing all we can to answer all the calls,” said Withrow. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the valuable U.S. Gov’t issued coins. That means U.S. residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication can claim the unsearched bags of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. Gov’t issued coins found inside. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
