NEWS Election and Legislation Check by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

Special election in Oxnard on Nov. 2

Voter information booklets are being mailed out for the Nov. 2 election for the District 2 seat on the Oxnard City Council, which became vacant when former city council member Carmen Ramirez was elected to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. Three candidates are listed on the ballot: Gabe Teran, who was appointed by the city council to fill the seat until a person can be elected to complete the remainder of Ramirez’s term; Tai Hartley, chair of the Riverpark Neighborhood Council in Oxnard; and Eduardo Q. Huerta, a consultant. Oct. 18 is the last day for Oxnard residents to register to vote in order to vote on Nov. 2. Voteby-mail ballots will begin to be mailed out on Oct. 4.

Oxnard resident running for Congress

Oxnard resident Daniel Wilson, a veteran, trans-gender man is running for Congress to represent the 26th District. He is running as an independent candidate without party affiliation with a platform that includes healthcare and housing for all and climate action. More about Wilson and his campaign is online at danielforcongress.com. Wilson will be taking on the well-established Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) and has pledged to not accept any campaign contributions from corporate, PAC or other lobbyist interests.

New state legislation

The state legislature has concluded the current session, approving 800 bills to go to the governor’s desk. State senators and assembly members will return for the next session in January 2022. Five bills authored by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) are awaiting approval or veto, and a sixth bill Irwin authored was signed into law. On Sept. 23, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1101 which will improve compliance and transparency within homeowners association boards. The five bills awaiting Newsom’s yay or nay are: • AB298, designed to 6—

streamline the licensure process for new accountants; • AB488, aimed at creating a one-of-a-kind structure for regulating online charitable giving to protect donors and charities; • AB751, which will allow county recorders to continue to accept electronic requests for vital records, including marriage and death certificates, so long as security requirements are in place; • AB1280, designed to combat fraud in the hospice industry; and • AB1331, aimed at establishing a full-time position in the California Department of Health Care Services to oversee the coordination of behavioral health crisis services, ensuring continuity of care. Irwin represents the 44th Assembly District, including the communities of Camarillo, El Rio, Moorpark, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village. During the current legislative session so far, one of six bills authored by Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Ventura) has garnered the governor’s signature. AB941 establishes grant funding for farmworker resource centers at the county level. Bennett’s other bills pending approval are: • AB896, that grants the state oil and gas regulatory office the authority to remediate idle oil and gas wells and creates a pathway for oil companies to resolve unpaid idle well fees; • AB824, which allows students to petition to add a student representative to county boards of education and the governing board of charter schools; • AB716, requiring court houses in the state to provide remote access to the public; and • AB674, which amends the existing Calfresh program and requires counties to provide eligibility information to young adults leaving the foster system, increasing access to food programs. Bennett represents the state’s 37th district which includes some parts of Santa Barbara County as well as Ventura, the Ojai Valley, Santa Paula, Oxnard, Fillmore, Piru, Saticoy and Somis.

Assemblymember Steve Bennett Federal legislation in process

On Sept. 21, Brownley introduced HR5295, the Every Veteran Counts Act, which if it becomes law would compel the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to create and update a database tracking the demographic information of the entire U.S. veteran population. Companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate by Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. There is currently no national database that can be used to gather this information to assess veterans’ needs and plan for their care. Surveys have been used in the past to assess this information; the last was conducted in 2010. Rep. Mike Garcia, (R - Santa Clarita) co-sponsored HR 4792, which is aimed at pushing back against what Garcia called “one of our greatest threats...the Chinese Communist Party.” Called the Countering Communist China Act, the bill, if it becomes law, would restrict the Chinese Community Party from using propaganda in the U.S. and from accessing American citizen data from mobile applications. The act also authorizes an investigation into China’s role in the global coronavirus pandemic. Garcia put out a statement to supporters about his position opposing mandates that require the public to wear masks or require employees to be vaccinated. His written statement said, “While I have been open about my choice to receive the COVID-19 vaccine after consulting with my doctor I believe this is a personal decision. Americans should have the freedom to make their own medical decisions.”

In Brief No signatures submitted in support of Parks recall Ventura County Elections Division officials confirmed that no signatures were turned in by the Sept. 14 deadline from anyone associated with the effort to recall Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks. Proponents for the recall had requested an extension, but Mark Lunn, Ventura County ClerkRecorder/Registrar of Voters, responded that he did not have discretion to grant more time for signature gathering.

economic development manager. Hart is the current manager of the city’s Safe and Clean program. The position is listed with an annual base salary of between $105,043 and $140,760, and the job description includes developing, implementing and maintaining the city’s economic development goals and strategy. The position is responsible for identifying “economic job producing opportunities” as well as serving as a liaison between the city and private sector.

County water service areas in Level 2 Water Supply Shortage On Sept. 21, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors unanimously declared a Level 2 Water Supply Shortage for the county water services areas that include Moorpark, Bell Canyon, Somis and Lake Sherwood. The declaration was made at the request of Joe Pope, director of water and sanitation for the Ventura County Public Works Agency, and only applies to those unincorporated county areas in which the county is the water purveyor. The declaration requests that water users in those water service areas “voluntarily reduce their water use by 15%” from 2020 levels. To confirm county water service area locations and to report water being wasted, visit: www.vcpublicworks.org/wsd/ servicearea.

Port receives $5.2 million grant The Port of Hueneme/Oxnard Harbor District has been awarded a $5.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration program. The funds will be used to increase dredging in Ventura County, designated as an “opportunity zone,” in order to “maximize facility utilization” at the port. The funded project will add five feet of depth to the South Terminal, allowing fresh produce container vessels to carry a heavier load into port. The deck and docking areas, fender and mooring systems will be repaired and updated, allowing more ships to use the short side power available to reduce the need for ships to run their engines. Port officials reported the project is already fully permitted through the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. Sand from the dredging will be placed near beaches to assist with sand replenishment.

Four Thousand Oaks teens arrested for alleged hate crime On Sept. 19, four teen females were arrested after a pursuit on foot. The suspects allegedly stole a pair of shoes and made racially derogatory comments to a group of four other teen females from Camarillo. The suspects are from Thousand Oaks and one is a resident of Pacoima. Their names were not released because they are minors. Ages of the victims range from 7 to 12 years and ages of the suspects range from 13 to 15. Law enforcement officers also report that the suspects allegedly broke into a vacant business, painted racial slurs on the walls and discharged fire extinguishers, causing damage to the interior of the building. The suspects were arrested for charges of theft, vandalism, civil rights violations and resisting arrest. They were cited and released to their parents. Ventura will start search for new Economic Development Manager Estelle Bussa, who has served as the city of Ventura’s economic development manager since 2018, will be leaving her post effective Oct. 1, 2021. She is leaving for a job opportunity in Austin, Texas with a technology company that will allow her to work from home. While the city conducts a search for her replacement, Meredith Hart is slated to serve as interim

Doug Trapp Doug Trapp joins board of Ventura Land Trust The Ventura Land Trust has announced that Doug Trapp, a resident of Ventura and project manager with Staples Construction, has joined the Board of the local nonprofit organization. Prior to joining the Board, Trapp served on the organization’s Stewardship Committee and was involved in the opening of the Harmon Canyon Preserve to the public last year. Trapp joins a 10-member board made up of seven men and three women.

FEATURE VC VOICES

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT Senior advocate and local government watchdog Suz Montgomery has never stopped working for her community by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

Sometimes I think about how much easier it would have been if I hadn’t been such an angry woman; it’s what fuels me.” I was sitting with Suz Montgomery, 73, in the backyard of her home in West Ventura off the Avenue. Her home was full of activity: Water damage was discovered and a construction crew had torn up her kitchen to repair it. But that’s life, isn’t it? Even as cancer marches forward, kitchen construction proceeds. It was a foggy morning on Wednesday, Sept. 8, and it wasn’t certain that we’d be able to meet. She had been battling cancer for about seven years, and had come to the point of peace with the outcome. But meet we did, on her patio lush with a diversity of plants, an inviting habitat for all manner of birds. Through the years, it’s proved fertile ground for humans hatching plans as well. While we spoke, she threaded humor in with her bluntness about her impending departure from this world, but it was improving the community that she wanted to talk about. Amidst the projects and successes, we also spoke of plans that fell short. She shared a few of those stories, such as the burn of losing the university planned for Taylor Ranch just north of Ventura years ago — that institution would instead be located in Camarillo, becoming California State University, Channel Islands. But mostly Suz Montgomery in her home, August 2021. Photo by John Hankins. she was riled up, and perhaps a bit angry, about the need for more people to pay attention and get involved in their community today, and take an active interest in local politics. We need to “see more and more people get involved. If we don’t, our communities will just spiral down,” she said.

“34% of the county and city are seniors”

While Montgomery has been involved in many aspects of civic life, her most enduring legacy might be in her work with Ventura County’s eldest citizens. Most recently she was a resource coordinator at Ventura Adult and Continuing Education (VACE) in the Ventura Unified School District. She brought cooking and gardening classes to seniors to help them stay active and improve memory. She has served as chair of the advisory council of the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging and has been on the Ventura City Parks Commission. She founded a popular local television show, Schmooze with Suz, and in 2017 was named a Woman of the Year by State Senator Hannah Beth Jackson. (She also speaks Italian and is a formally trained chef.) Her advocacy on behalf of seniors is a treasure to the community and her face brightened as she spoke of the men and women she has worked with through the years. “My seniors, they are the best people I’ve ever known in my life . . . My seniors are educated and smart, Tuskegee airmen, congressmen, captains of industry, Bataan Death 10 — — September 30, 2021

0930_VCReporter_FEATURE.indd 10

Marchers, fascinating historical people . . . They are invisible now, but 34% of the county and city are seniors. That’s a voting block. We can vote you in, and vote you out.” She mentioned current Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko, who has dedicated four attorneys in his office to investigating issues of fraud and abuse targeting seniors. He gave a recent presentation for the seniors she works with and she said “he’s getting it done.”

“Leadership is mostly not up to speed”

Montgomery has never been one to limit herself to a single issue, however. While her work with seniors has always been integral to her activism, she has also been a local government watchdog for decades. She has amassed a library, of sorts, of city documents in her house. Institutional knowledge to which no current elected official or city staff member can lay claim. Montgomery applauded the young people she has seen in Ventura and around the county who have been hitting the streets, speaking at meetings, getting active, forming political groups.

“The young people are going to save us. There’s a lot of work to be done.” She felt that her generation didn’t do enough to bring them along. “We need to be training younger people. Millennials are going to carry the ball. Our generation screwed up, there wasn’t enough mentorship.” She noted that her generation should have done more to tell young activists about why it’s important to get involved, “not the bottom-line mentality, not for personal gain, but what’s good for all of us . . . educate yourself [about local government and the issues.] Be a part of it, don’t wait . . . Again, we can do this. If everyone jumps in.” Do what? She simply replied by saying, “There are no wrong answers . . . I’ve devoted my entire adult life to public service, so many roadblocks . . . leadership is mostly not up to speed.” In true Montgomery fashion, she didn’t pull any punches. “I’m not afraid to speak, to tell the truth,” she said when asked about Ventura City Council. Acknowledging that some councilmembers run and get elected with good intentions, she said

that the trend she has seen involves either pushing an agenda or becoming reliant on staff. “It used to be an honor to be a city council member. Now we can’t find people who want to run,” she said. In her opinion, too many come forward seeking recognition or financial gain. Again and again she has found a “weak city council” that seems to be under the thumb of city staff, failing to question the status quo. “There are a lot who feel like I do, but they are hesitant,” she said. “I’ve only got a couple of weeks left; I have no fear.”

“Homelessness is the root of all the problems”

As I wrote this story, Montgomery was finding it hard to speak. Just a few weeks ago, sitting around her teak patio table that had seen its share of planning and strategy meetings, she shared that the cancer was in most parts of her body, including her stomach and lungs. Her husband, John Hankins, checked her temperature and ensured that the oxygen tank was working properly. Nevertheless, she didn’t miss a beat. Along with her pleas for more people to get involved in local issues, she emphasized coming at the issues without a focus on financial gain. When a community is built to better the lives of the residents that are here, it will thrive. But when the agenda is financial gain it can warp the plans and have consequences that do not improve the lives of residents and, in some cases, cause harm. By example, Montgomery pointed to issues of traffic and homelessness while dozens of residential development projects go up or are in the pipeline. “Pay attention to developments. Do we have to build so many units? Are they the right kinds? Are they serving the needs of the community? The people who work here, but can’t afford to live here.” She noted one current project for 250 units off of Ventura Avenue near DeAnza DATA Middle School, which will be mostly higher-priced homes — clearly, Montgomery said, not for existing residents or local working families. Most of the homes being built are condominiums or townhomes, unaf-

vcreporter.com fordable to middle-class families, seniors or those who may be at risk of homelessness. These planned housing projects will do nothing to alleviate homelessness because they don’t include enough low-income units. “Homelessness is the root of all the problems. We are not dealing with the problem, we are putting a bandaid over a gaping wound.” Montgomery pointed to homelessness as a key factor affecting mental health care needs in the county, another issue she has been actively working to address. She along with other local advocates have been putting pressure on the county to build a facility that would provide long-term acute care for the severely mentally ill. “We need to build it. The situation is getting worse every passing day . . . we can’t rely on the nonprofits to do a lot of the work. They don’t have the resources or the budget, the county can take up the slack, why not?” A secondary issue related to ongoing development projects: traffic and emergency evacuations. Montgomery said that while the city hired a staff member tasked with overseeing a citywide emergency response plan, including an evacuation plan for the Westside, a plan has not yet been formulated. All while yet more homes are being built, in an area she described as having limited routes for evacuation in the event of the next fire or other emergency. According to Montgomery, the money is available — the county just needs the leadership to make it happen. She pointed to this as yet another area where elected officials are relying on staff without questioning whether people are actually being helped in the community.

Question everything

Montgomery may say her activism is rooted in being angry. But as she talked, it was clear that she has been driven by a fierce concern for her community. She cares for the people who struggle, who are aging, who are alone and troubled. She started in community activism and local politics when she was a teen working for Congressman Jim Corman. “I was a file clerk and I paid attention.” Montgomery, born “just south of Chicago to a political family,” had six brothers; she was the only girl. Her way of challenging the status quo and seeking change through action was surely rooted in her family, who always encouraged her “to not do the normal thing.” The family moved to the San Fernando Valley in 1953. She came to Ventura in 1983. Her family was Catholic and Montgomery attended private schools, which she described as providing an “excellent education” where she was taught to “question” everything and “be curious.” When I asked about favorite projects of the past, she demurred, noting that she doesn’t look back. “What I do, when I complete a project, it’s done, full circle and then I move on to the next project or issue,” Montgomery explained. “I don’t even look back, so much of this can be done moving on to the next mountain.” When pressed, however, she spoke of Kellogg Park on Ventura Avenue, saying it was her favorite recent project: “It’s activated every day,” with kids and people playing or sitting, enjoying the space. At the time, as a member of the city parks commission, she worked with Jackie Pearce, executive director of the Westside Community Development Corporation, to push for the project and line up funding. Opening in 2018, Kellogg Park quickly became the heart of the Westside, hosting birthday parties, community gatherings, protests and individuals seeking a quiet bench. Montgomery spoke also of her recent endeavors to form a citizens oversight committee, that would be wholly independent of the city and the county. She said she’d provide such a committee access to the trove of documents she has amassed, to aid its members as they address issues. “If we don’t get satisfaction, take it to the grand jury,” she emphasized.

Suz Montgomery (red hat) visiting Marion, one of the local seniors she worked with during the pandemic. Photo by John Hankins. She likened the work of the oversight committee to the “Little Hoover Commission,” or, more formally, the Milton Marks “Little Hoover” Commission on California State Government Organization and Economy. Founded in 1962, the Little Hoover Commission was a state oversight agency tasked with investigating state government and operations to ensure efficiency and good service, and make recommendations on all government reorganization plans.

“Lead when you need to”

Today, in Montgomery’s opinion, the city of Ventura is in “worse shape” than when she moved here decades ago. While she acknowledged that there is “no easy answer,” she tasked the elected officials with “hiring the right people, and the city did not do that.” She faulted the city for failing to plan ahead and being “reactive, never proactive, never looking down the road.” She likened the city’s approach to always “filling a pothole without looking at the whole street.” She expressed concern that the city might become what “the city wants . . . but not what the community wants at all.” That comes full circle to her pleas to her neighbors to step in, without an “agenda,” but rather to make the community better for everyone. “Lead when you need to. I’m not doing this for recognition, either, but to make it better, and it can be.” As I prepared to hand this story off to my editor, Suz Montgomery was at home, being lovingly cared for by her husband and friends. I was told she was fading a bit, but that my follow-up questions (sent via email) were in no way a bother. For Montgomery, even speaking to a local journalist was an extension of her advocacy, a way to continue helping her community in her final days. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done. I can die in peace knowing it’s been done. I love my city, I love my county, I chose to live here after all this time. It’s got potential.” September 30, 2021 — — 11

Art, crafts and everything in between Harvest Festival returns Oct. 1-3 by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

eramics and keepsakes, blown glass and body care products, holiday decor and handmade jewelry. All this and more will be available at the 49th Annual Harvest Festival® Original Art and Craft Show, back for 2021 (after getting canceled last year) and taking place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds Oct. 1-3. It’s one of the county’s largest artisan marketplaces, with dozens of artists and crafters from across the United States setting up shop to offer their handmade, one-of-a-kind wares. Tickets run $4 to $9, can be purchased at the door or online, and are good for the entire weekend (be sure to get a hand stamp if you plan to return). Children 12 and under are free. For many of us, the term “arts and crafts” brings up images of wood carvings, quilts, knit tea cozies and decor with rustic flair. Those kinds of things will certainly be on display at the fairgrounds this weekend. But if your tastes lean more towards the modern or eclectic, not to worry! More than 24,000 original items will be for sale, and the selection is diverse. There will be something for everyone. Makers from across the nation are drawn to this family-owned and -operated festival, which makes stops in locations as far north as Sacramento, as far south as Del Mar in San Diego County and even out to Las Vegas. While it’s in our neck of the woods, however, it will also be a showcase for several Ventura County creators.

Glorious gourds

On the more harvest-y end of the spectrum is gourd artist Patricia Lelie of Camarillo, who’s been into the medium for nearly 20 years. “In 2002 I was at a high-end craft fair in Santa Monica,” she recalls. She saw a large, beautiful pot that she loved on sight — and was shocked to discover that “it was so light!” It was an expensive piece, but she couldn’t resist. She’s been hooked ever since. In 2008, Lelie saw an ad in the paper for a local gourd club, and decided to sign up. “I’ve always had an artistic side.” Gourds-as-canvas really sparked her creativity, and after taking a number of classes and reading up on the art (she still references

The Complete Book of Gourd Carving, by Jim Widess and Ginger Summit) she started teaching the classes herself. She has even sold several pieces through an arts organization, and today Patricia Lelie originals can be found throughout the United States and even in France. She used to source her gourds from a farm in Arizona. After she put in a backyard garden, she found that gourds started sprouting from the seeds removed during the carving process. “Gourds went everywhere!” So she’s had a lot of raw material to play with, and has done some amazing things: gourds intricately carved with geometric shapes, painted with colorful scenes, decorated with interesting embellishments. No two are alike, and most are vastly different from each other. “It’s just whatever strikes me in the moment,” says Lelie. “I’d see something in a magazine and say, ‘oh, I can do that on a gourd!’” At the moment, she says, “I have gourds coming out of my ears.” So she decided to get really literal with that experience by turning broken pieces of gourd into earrings. She’s found them to be surprisingly suitable as jewelry. “Gourds shatter in really interesting pieces,” she explains. “[The earrings] are comfortable, extremely light and very easy to wear.” “It’s just been so much fun, smashing up gourds!”

Something that might appeal to the more modern eye at this year’s festival will be sportswear from California Cut. Super-soft t-shirts and hoodies, groovy hats, even some cool totes . . . if you want to lean into the comfortable, casual, beachy SoCal vibe, this is the booth for you. “We’re going for the California coastal lifestyle,” confirms Clark Song, who runs Calfornia Cut with wife Shonna. The Songs seek out the highest quality, softest material for their apparel. But it’s the

unique designs made by Song himself that really set these products apart. Mermaids, waves, ocean life, surfboards . . . all with a vintage or Art Nouveau feel, and all paying homage to Ventura County. “I draw quite a bit of inspiration from the ocean environment here,” notes Song, who lives in the Pierpont neighborhood of Ventura. “I think of my designs as love letters to this beautiful town.” Song’s background is in animation and visual effects, and he’s worked on numerous movies and video games. His long and impressive resume includes The Matrix Reloaded and Men in Black 3, and animated features such as Kung Fu Panda and Shrek the Third. “Being in the movie industry can be fun,” Song says, “but as an artist, you have limited autonomy to make your own creative vision.” He and Shonna moved to Ventura in 2013, and started California Cut to support the family (including two kids, 11 and 7) both financially and creatively. It’s a two-person operation, with Song handling the creative and production end. The designs are all his, and he does all the screen printing as well, using a manual press. “It’s all done in a very old-school way,” he says. California Cut has tried to be community focused in more than just the designs. The Songs happily printed t-shirts with a special #VenturaStrong design for a fundraiser following the Thomas Fire. “We helped raise a few thousand dollars for the city,” Song notes proudly. In addition, he channeled his own anxiety over COVID-19 into creating personal protective equipment. “During the pandemic, when the state first shut down completely, I just did a deep dive into how to make an effective face mask.” The Songs acquired sheets of polypropylene, the same material used in N95 masks, to

create something similar. They gave away more than half of the masks they made. “It was very therapeutic,” he says. “It helped me cope with the stress of the pandemic.” He’s also got a fun vaccination-centric design to show off at this year’s Harvest Festival — one of his favorite venues to sell his apparel. “This will be our third time attending; we absolutely love it!” Song says. “It’s a very collegiate environment. The vendors have a lot of respect for one another; it’s friendly. And the customers seem genuinely interested.”

More than just a store

Shopping handmade items is of course the major highlight, but the Harvest Festival promises more than just vendors. Concessionaires will offer a variety of refreshments to enjoy onsite, while specialty food purveyors will have edible goodies (jams, salsas, honey products and more) you can purchase for gifts or consume at home. Several makers will hold demonstrations, and strolling entertainers will keep audiences entertained. There will be an area just for kids, and contests taking place throughout the weekend. If you want to save a little money and support a good cause, bring a canned good for donation. Project Understanding, which offers food, housing and tutoring help to those in need, will get the donated items; the donor will save $2 off the price of admission. It should be a solid three days of good, clean, family-friendly fun. Find handmade specialties, chat with artists, and spend your money on creative entrepreneurs rather than big-box retailers — a bountiful harvest, indeed!

’m a sucker for a pretty little house that’s been converted to a restaurant. I love the ambience, the quirks and the homey feel. Ventura has a few sweet spots of this nature, and one of them makes a darn fine breakfast. It may not have ever been featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins a mimosa — and at just $6.25, it’s an easy and Dives, but what it lacks in flash and sass indulgence . . . and the second mimosa is half off to boot. ADVICE GODDESS

Bedder Later

I’m a woman in my 20s seeking a boyfriend. On the first date, I like to have a few drinks and, if the guy and I hit it off, have sex to see whether we have physical chemistry. Lately, I’ve had a string of great first dates — flowing conversation, emotional rapport, and what seemed to be long-term potential — yet they all ghosted me after sex. Are men still living in the Victorian Age? — Confused The wait to have sex with you mirrors the mandatory waiting period to buy a plastic squirt gun.

by amy alkon

That said, you aren’t wrong to want to figure out up front whether there’s sexual chemistry. As for just how “up front” to do that, there’s reason to slow your roll — even if it means you get involved with a few guys who turn out to be sexual duds. Because a woman can get pregnant from a single ill-advised naked romp, women evolved to be the “choosier” sex — to take a “hmm, we’ll see...” approach: stand back and assess a man’s potential to “provide” and willingness to commit before dropping their panties (and everything else) on his bedroom floor. Men co-evolved to expect female choosiness and to need to prove themselves over time to women of high mate value: women who can hold out for just the right guy. In short, men tend to value (and stick around for) what’s hard to, uh, grope. Women are also more likely to succumb to a sort of alcohol-induced blindness, which psychiatrist Andy Thomson, in an email to evolutionary psychologist David Buss, called the “Prosecco perception bias,” after the Italian sparkling wine. Buss, who included this in his book, “When Men Behave Badly,” explains that women have less of the alcohol-detoxifying enzyme, alcohol dehydro-

genase. (That’s why women get more rapidly drunk than men, even when they throw back less alcohol per pound of body weight.) “Because alcohol stimulates bonding endorphins, women are more likely to misread interactions with men” when tipsy, Buss explains, and “overestimate the likelihood of an emotional bond and a long-term relationship.” Sure, there are blissful long-term relationships that started out with no-strings-attached sex. However, because you’re a woman hoping to find a boyfriend, having sex on the first date is a risky strategy. There’s a way to get a guy to stick around after sex, and it’s to wait to have it till he’s got feelings for you — though, admittedly, zip-tying him to your headboard works, too.

Ghosting Story

I’m a straight guy using dating apps. What’s with the constant flaking guy friends and I experience from women we’re meeting for first dates? One woman on Hinge texted me to confirm 30 minutes before we were meeting at a bar but never showed and stopped responding to my texts. The next day, she complained that her phone had died. Another girl on Bumble agreed to

have drinks, but when I texted her the day of, she unmatched. This extreme rudeness only happens with women I meet on dating apps, not those I meet in person, like at a friend’s party. Any idea why? —Disturbed There are valid reasons to be a no-show for a date with no explanation, for example, the experience so many of us have of being abducted by aliens who don’t have a charger that fits our phone. This rudeness you’re experiencing — all these women treating you like a disposable object instead of a person with feelings — isn’t caused by app use, per se. The problem, as I explain in “Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck,” is that we are now “living in societies too big for our brains”: vast, transient “strangerhoods.” We didn’t evolve to be around strangers and aren’t psychologically equipped to live in a world filled with them because the psychology still powering our thinking (and behavior) today is adapted for small ancestral hunter-gatherer societies. Ancestral humans might’ve been stuck with pretty much the same 25 people for much of their lives (per estimates by

anthropologists Robert L. Kelly and Irven DeVore) and might’ve had a larger surrounding society of perhaps 100 to 150 people. In the tiny ancestral world, the need to preserve one’s reputation was a psychological police force that kept even rotten people from acting their rotten worst. (This is still a factor today in small towns where everybody knows everybody.) In contrast, strangers “meeting” in the virtual world — on apps that are basically eBay for dates — have no shared social context, so...bye-bye fear of reputational ruin! In other words, when connecting via an app, it’s probably a good idea to expect unreliability. You might even bring a book to read in case a woman ends up running a little late — uh, intends to leave you sitting there at the bar until you decompose. (c)2021, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

Blogger AnaSophia was asked, “What do you find attractive in a person?” I’ll reproduce her reply because it’s a good time to think about what your answer would be. I’m not implying you should be looking for a new lover. I’m interested in inspiring you to ruminate about what alliances you should cultivate during the coming months. Here’s what AnaSophia finds attractive: “strong desire but not neediness, passionate sensitivity, effortlessness, authenticity, innocence of perception, sense of humor, vulnerability and honesty, embodying one’s subtleties and embracing one’s paradoxes, acting unconditionally and from the heart.”

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Taurus author Roberto Bolaño confessed, “Sometimes I want greatness, sometimes just its shadow.” I appreciate his honesty. I think what he says is true about most of us. Is there anyone who is always ready for the heavy responsibility of pursuing greatness? Doubtful. To be great, we must periodically go through phases when we recharge our energy and take a break from being nobly ambitious. What about you, dear Taurus? If I’m reading the omens correctly, you will benefit from a phase of reinvention and reinvigoration. During the next three weeks, you’ll be wise to hang out in the shadows of greatness.

(May 21-June 20):

“Have fun, even if it’s not the same kind of fun everyone else is having,” wrote religious writer C. S. Lewis. That advice is ten times more important right now than it usually is. For the sake of your body’s and soul’s health, you need to indulge in sprees of playful amusement and blithe delight and tension-relieving merriment. And all that good stuff will work its

20 —

most potent magic if it stimulates pleasures that are unique to you — and not necessarily in line with others’ tastes.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22):

“It is one thing to learn about the past,” wrote Cancerian journalist Kenneth Auchincloss. “It is another to wallow in it.” That’s stellar advice for you to incorporate in the coming weeks. After studying your astrological omens, I’m enthusiastic about you exploring the old days and old ways. I’m hoping that you will discover new clues you’ve overlooked before and that this further information will inspire you to re-envision your life story. But as you conduct your explorations, it’s also crucial to avoid getting bogged down in sludgy emotions like regret or resentment. Be inspired by your history, not demoralized by it.

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

Would you like to deepen and strengthen your capacity to concentrate? Cosmic rhythms will conspire in your favor if you work on this valuable skill in the coming weeks. You’ll be able to make more progress than would normally be possible. Here’s pertinent advice from author Harriet Griffey: “Whenever you feel like quitting, just do five more — five more minutes, five more exercises, five more pages — which will extend your focus.” Here’s another tip: Whenever you feel your concentration flagging, remember what it is you love about the task you’re doing. Ruminate about its benefits for you and others.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

What’s your favorite feeling? Here’s Virgo poet Mary Szybist’s answer to that question: hunger. She’s not speaking about the

longing for food, but rather the longing for everything precious, interesting, and meaningful. She adores the mood of “not yet,” the experience of moving toward the desired thing. What would be your response to the question, Virgo? I’m guessing you may at times share Szybist’s perspective. But given the current astrological omens, your favorite feeling right now may be utter satisfaction — the gratifying sensation of getting what you’ve hungered for. I say, trust that intuition.

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

In the English language, the words “naked” and “nude” have different connotations. Art critic Kenneth Clark noted that “naked” people depicted in painting and sculpture are “deprived of clothes,” and embarrassed as a result. Being “nude,” on the other hand, has “no uncomfortable overtone,” but indicates “a balanced, prosperous, and confident body.” I bring this to your attention because I believe you would benefit from experiencing extra nudity and no nakedness in the days ahead. If you choose to take on this assignment, please use it to upgrade your respect and reverence for your beauty. PS: Now is also a favorable time to express your core truths without inhibition or apology. I urge you to be your pure self in all of your glory.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

Scorpio poet Anne Sexton wrote, “One has to get their own animal out of their own cage and not look for either an animal keeper or an unlocker.” That’s always expert advice, but it will be extra vital for you to heed in the coming weeks. The gorgeous semi-wild creature within you needs more room to run, more sights to see, more adventures to seek. For that to happen, it needs to spend more time outside of its cage. And you’re the best person to make sure that happens.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Sagittarian composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) could be a marvelous friend. If someone he cared for was depressed or feeling lost, he would invite them to sit in his presence as he improvised music on the piano. There were no words, no advice — only emotionally stirring melodies. “He said everything to me,” one friend said about his gift. “And finally gave me consolation.” I invite you to draw inspiration from his example, Sagittarius. You’re at the peak of your powers to provide solace, comfort, and healing to allies who need such nurturing. Do it in whatever way is also a blessing for you.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

At age 23, Capricorn-born Jeanne Antoinette Poisson (1721–1764) became French King Louis XV’s favorite mistress. She was not born into aristocracy, but she wielded her Capricornian flair with supreme effectiveness. Ultimately, she achieved a noble title as well as high prestige and status in the French court. As is true for evolved Capricorns, her elevated role was well-deserved, not the result of vulgar social-climbing. She was a patron of architecture, porcelain artwork, and France’s top intellectuals. She ingratiated herself to the King’s wife, the Queen, and served as an honored assistant. I propose we make her your role model for the next four weeks. May she inspire you to seek a boost in your importance and clout that’s accomplished with full integrity.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

The bad news is that artist Debbie Wagner was diagnosed with two brain tumors in 2002. The good news is that surgery not only enabled her to survive, but enhanced her visual acuity. The great news is that on

most days since 2005, she has painted a new image of the sunrise. I invite you to dream up a ritual to celebrate your own victory over adversity, Aquarius. Is there a generous gesture or creative act you could do on a semi-regular basis to thank life for providing you with the help and power you needed?

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

A self-described “anarchist witch” named Lars writes on his Tumblr blog, “I am a ghost from the 1750s, and my life is currently in the hands of a group of suburban 13-yearolds using a ouija board to ask me if Josh from homeroom has a crush on them.” He’s implying that a powerful supernatural character like himself is being summoned to do tasks that are not worthy of him. He wishes his divinatory talents were better used. Are there any resemblances between you and him, Pisces? Do you ever feel as if you’re not living up to your promise? That your gifts are not being fully employed? If so, I’m pleased to predict that you could fix this problem in the coming weeks and months. You will have extra energy and savvy to activate your full potential. Homework: Describe the status quo situation you’re tired of, and how you’re going to change it. https://Newsletter. Severe, a child. To: Jasmine N. Severe, Unknown father, and to all persons claiming to be the parent of the above-named person who is described as follows: name Stefano A. Severe, Date of Birth: 07/07/2021, Place of Birth: Ventura, CA, Father's name: Unknown, Mother’s name: Jasmine N. Severe. Pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26, a hearing has been scheduled for your child. You are hereby notified that you may appear on 12/01/2021, at 8:30 a.m., or as soon as counsel can be heard in Courtroom J1 of this Court at Juvenile Justice Center 4353 Vineyard Ave. Oxnard, CA 93036. Parental rights may be terminated at this hearing. On 12/01/2021, the Human Services Agency will recommend termination of parental rights. The child may be ordered placed in long term foster care, subject to the regular review of the Juvenile Court; or, a legal guardian may be appointed for the child and letters of guardianship be issued; or, adoption may be identified as the permanent placement goal and the Court may order that efforts be made to locate an appropriate adoptive family for the child for a period not to exceed 180 days and set the matter for further review; or, parental rights may be terminated. Any order of the Court permanently terminating parental rights under this section shall be conclusive and binding upon the minor person, upon the parent or parents, and upon all other persons who have been served with citation by publication or otherwise. After making such an order, the Court shall have no power to set aside, change, or modify it, but this shall not be construed to limit the rights to appeal the order. If the Court, by order or judgment, declares the child free from the custody and control of both parents, or one parent if the other no longer has custody and control, the Court shall, at the same time, order the child referred to the licensed County adoption agency for adoptive placement by that agency. The rights and procedures described above are set forth in detail in the California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26. You are referred to that section for further particulars. Michael J. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the beneficiary, trustee or court pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed and, if applicable, the rescheduled date and time for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website: www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of the property using the file number assigned to this case No. 21-1129-BUIS.
