Power to Speak

Why five blocks of Downtown Ventura should remain closed to traffic by Annette Taylor

Keeping part of downtown pedestrian friendly would also help fight isolation. If more of us are going to be working from home more often, that’s all the more reason to have a fun, motivating place to mingle face-to-face. It seems that if we don’t have to deal with our neighbors, we won’t, so any motivation to get us out-and-about would help. Not knowing the people around you has been normalized, but it’s not how our cave-dwelling ancestors lived. We will feel safer if we know a bit more about the others in our community. We psychologically need our neighbors, but we just aren’t aware of it. I guess I can only hope the businesses that have been benefiting from increased foot traffic will refrain from “posturing” or angling for more power/better exposure. I hope business owners downtown feel grateful for this unexpected opportunity our post-COVID world has thrown at them. I also hope that the citizens of and visitors to our county will continue to appreciate the change, too. Keeping cars off Main Street would give people from different worlds another place to practice getting along. And just as if we were a tribe of AD PROOF cave-dwellers, we are all in this together!

Parks recall deadline not extended Recall effort cites pandemic, voter confusion in request for more time by Kimberly Rivers

P

kimberly@vcreporter.com

roponents of a recall effort for Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks have requested more time in which to obtain the over 11,000 signatures required to have Parks recalled. Mark Lunn, Ventura County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters, has told the recall effort that there is no “discretion” in the timeline for obtaining the signature, and therefore he’s unable to allow any extension. An Aug. 30 letter to Lunn’s office signed by Agoura Hills-based attorney Ronda Baldwin-Kennedy requested a 90-day extension beyond the allowed 160 days to obtain signatures, citing the extension granted by the courts to add 63 days onto the signature gathering efforts for the recall effort for Governor Gavin Newsom. According to Baldwin-Kennedy, the extension is needed due to pandemic restrictions at locations where signatures are normally gathered and “confusion” regarding the recall of Newsom. The election for that recall falls on Sept. 14, the same day as the deadline for signature submission for the effort to recall Parks. Baldwin-Kennedy said that “has made it difficult” to collect signatures. The letter submitted on behalf of the recall effort called obtaining the required 11,067 signatures, or 10% of registered voters, in the supervisor’s district a “substantial undertaking.” State law gives 160 days from the date of petition certification to signature submission. The recall

petition was certified by Lunn’s office on April 8, 2021, giving the recall effort until Sept. 14 to collect and submit the required signatures to get the recall on a ballot. Baldwin-Kennedy’s letter also cited pandemic restrictions “imposed by the State and Ventura County Board of Supervisors . . . in response to rising Covid-19 numbers,” which have “severely inhibited” the ability to circulate petitions for the recall effort. She wrote that due to the pandemic the typical places where signatures would be gathered “are restricted by mask and social distasting (sic).” She stated that “voters are more hesitant to engage with signature gather[ers]” due to “the raising fear of the uptick with COVID-19 numbers and the Delta Variant.” The recall effort has so far been able to obtain 7,500 signatures. Recall proponents cite the business closure restrictions put in place over the past year, and the lawsuits filed by the county against businesses that refused to shut their doors, as reasons for the recall. County officials repeatedly said the lawsuits were seeking compliance with state-imposed mandates, and the actions were all ultimately dropped. Recall organizers said they plan to recall all Ventura County Supervisors who supported the business closure requirements and lawsuits.

Eye on the Environment

Less packaging can result in more waste by David Goldstein

U

sually, buying a product with less packaging reduces waste. This is obvious with products like laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, or cleaning fluids sold as concentrates. Adding water at home, rather than buying the product in its diluted state, is great for the environment because concentrates not only cut packaging requirements, concentrates also reduce transportation volume. Concentrates usually save consumers money, too, as manufacturers pass on a portion of packaging and transportation savings. For one important recyclable package, however, smaller serving sizes are not necessarily leading to less waste. According to researchers, when people buy the cute, small size of sodas, they are likely to drink more than one, leading to a net increase in packaging consumed. David Just, a professor of behavioral economics at Cornell University, and Brian Wansink, the director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, described their research a few years ago in an article published in the Washington Post on Feb. 11, 2016 (1). As Just states in the article, consumers who are “left wanting or who feel they have done something virtuous by not consuming more” often “feel they have a license to consume more elsewhere, and most often overcompensate.” The research of Just and Wansink may also explain why today curbside recycling is not having the effects anticipated when it was introduced in the early 1990s. At that time, I was on the Ventura Countywide Recycling Consortium, a group consisting of recycling coordinators from each city, the 6— — September 9, 2021

county, private refuse hauling companies and other interested parties. We anticipated not only increased recycling rates, but also gleefully discussed the possibility of convenient household recycling leading to monumental, societal change. I remember speculating, “Just as a baby’s first step toward responsibility is learning to manage their own waste, when home-based recycling becomes popular, everyone will start noticing their discards, and there will be a massive movement not just to recycle, but also to reduce and reuse waste.” Now, a generation has been raised with convenient household recycling . . . but disposal did not dramatically change. According to data from the California Department of Resources Recovery and Recycling (CalRecycle), there was an initial drop in per resident disposal in California through the early 1990s, but it inched back up nearly as high in the late 1990s, and has changed only slightly since then, both rising and falling, due to many factors, such as economic prosperity. Some analysts speculate curbside recycling was not a panacea because residents’ responses to curbside recycling may have something in common with consumer responses to drinking soda in smaller containers. Being “virtuous” by recycling may make consumers feel more entitled to consume. This issue is especially relevant to plastic containers other than bottles with the #1 or #2 label on the bottom. Despite downturns in the markets for most plastics, all types of plastic — other than plastic bags and foam — are

Recall funding

According to required documents filed with the Ventura County Elections division, Conejo Valley Cares, the committee organizing the recall effort, has raised a total of $14,767 in support of their efforts. One major contributor is Deborah Baber, who received notoriety during the pandemic last year when videos of her appearances during public comment at meetings of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors made national news and appeared on at least one late night talk show. Baber strongly opposed mask wearing mandates and the closure of businesses. She has contributed $3,555 which was spent on “legal fees” and recall “paraphernalia.” The funds also paid for “materials” created by Baber in support of the recall effort. Other major supporters of the recall include the restaurant Ms. Olson’s Coffee Hut in Channel Islands Harbor, one of the businesses the county sued when it refused to close, which has contributed $3,000 to the recall effort. John Von Colln of Thousand Oaks and owner of VC Defense, a Thousand Oaks-based firearm retailer, contributed $1,600. The recall committee has paid $2,247 to Sacramento-based law firm Bell, McAndrews and Hiltachk, which according to its website specializes in political and election law. Parks will term out as supervisor in 2023, being unable to run again due to term limits.

still accepted in curbside carts because markets are being developed, the segregated supply makes developing markets easier, and consumers would be confused by items being included, then excluded, then included again. To prevent packaging companies from gaining market advantage by falsely conveying the impression their products are easily recycled, California law allows the word “recyclable” on packaging only if at least 60 percent of recycling facilities in the state recycle it, and pending legislation (SB 343) proposes to reserve use of the chasing arrow symbol only for products generally recycled. Avoiding certain types of packaging is an example of source reduction. Source reduction encompasses the “reduce and reuse” portion of the eco-mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle,” which is a hierarchy of priorities, rather than just a list of options. Based on the research of consumer behavior, those concerned about the environment should be aware of their feelings about their accomplishment of putting items in curbside carts. “Don’t pat yourself on the back so hard that you end up breaking your arm,” is one popular phrase of warning relevant in this case. Without the self-awareness necessary to avoid the common human pitfall of pride, some measures can become source expanders rather than source reducers. Oxnard gives retroactive refund Court decision compels return of fees paid by Kimberly Rivers

A

kimberly@vcreporter.com

s a result of various decisions in Ventura County Superior Court, the city of Oxnard must reimburse city utility customers and eliminate a fee. The city is opting to make the changes retroactive to January 2020, giving more of a refund to customers. Under the court’s ruling, the city must refund fees collected as part of the Infrastructures Use Fee (IUF) and stop charging for the fee effective June 2021. The city will be refunding a total of $36.5 million to ratepayers. “As I’ve stated before, the judge’s ruling on this matter was fair and reasonable; the city erred in its implementation of the IUF. We will certainly correct it,” said Alexander Nguyen, Oxnard city manager. He added, “The city was determined to make things right. At the end of day the city’s utility customers are receiving a significant reimbursement credit that goes beyond what the court ruling required.” He said city staff had to determine the credits to be paid back over 20 months to all utility customers in the city, which include businesses and individuals. The city is doing more than what the court demanded by refunding fees back to January 2020. The two changes will appear on October bills in the following ways. First, what the city is calling a “one-time utility billing credit.” All residential and commercial customers will be given a one-time rate reduction credit for the September billing cycle that will appear on their October bill. The credit will represent an amount equal to 20 months of that customer’s payments for the IUF from January 2020 to August 2021. This credit will total $7.1 million. And second, an overall utility rate reduction. Due to the court ruling, the city cannot include the IUF in existing utility rates. This will mean that charges for

city-managed utilities will fall by the percentage that was previously being charged as the IUF. Water fees will drop 3.4%, wastewater services will go down 2.7% and fees for environmental resources (solid waste) will drop 3.5%. These changes will be in effect for the September billing cycle and will appear on the October bill or statements customers will receive. The city calculates that this change will save ratepayers nearly $4 million annually.

Starr’s lawsuits

The refunds being given, and the removal of the IUF from the existing rate structure, came about as a result of legal action led by Oxnard resident Aaron Starr filed in March 2017. He says the messaging from the city about going beyond what the court orders is “disingenuous,” saying the city has been illegally charging customers these same fees since 2014 but that a statute of limitations restricts the reach of the lawsuit and resulting court order. Other actions brought by Starr were struck down by the court, including two ballot initiatives that sought to change how the city conducts its business. Measures M and N, while passed by voters, were deemed to be a misuse of the ballot initiative process and that existing laws like the Brown Act, which governs how the city must conduct business, cannot be altered by ballot initiatives, nor can ballot initiatives enact rules for how an already-enacted general tax be spent. Those findings invalidated Measures M and N put forward by Starr. City staff and elected officials note the expense of responding to Starr’s lawsuits and repeatedly state that the lawsuits aren’t benefiting the city. Starr announced a new lawsuit against the city filed on Aug. 27 related to using funds collected for Landscape Maintenance Districts inappropriately.

The event included horses dancing in front of the town’s Palazzio, and a procession led by jazz and blues band the Barrelhouse Wailers to Rabalais’ Bistro in Downtown Santa Paula. The event was organized by the city of Santa Paula with community partners to celebrate the “unique community and the resilience our residents have shown throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dan Singer, Santa Paula City Manager. Hiker’s body found in Thousand Oaks. On Sept. 2, the body of James Ledbetter, a resident of Sunset Hills in Thousand Oaks, was found just off the trail in Lang Ranch. Ledbetter had been missing since Tuesday, when his wife reported that he had not returned from a hike. A search occurred with search and rescue, a K-9 and horse-mounted unit and helicopter. On Thursday morning authorities were notified that hikers had found Ledbetter’s body near a trail. The statement issued from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office stated that Ledbetter, an experienced hiker, had “accidentally fallen and suffered a major head injury.” Officials did not immediately respond to inquiries about how the head injury was confirmed. The Lang Ranch area is in the northeast area of Thousand Oaks and includes 1,025 acres, next to another 8,000 acres of designated Open Space. The area is part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Two arrested for narcotics sales On Aug. 20, Thousand Oaks resident Ross Cumming and Ojai resident Ariannah Bessa, both 24, were arrested for allegations related to the sale of illegal narcotics. Both suspects were contacted in Ventura and placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance, and for sales and conspiracy to commit a crime. Bessa posted bail and was released from custody. Cumming remains in custody, unable to post $60,000 in bail.

County officers deployed to Caldor Fire On Sept 1, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub announced that 27 deputies along with equipment and police vehicles were being deployed to support efforts to combat the Caldor Fire located east of Sacramento and south of Lake Tahoe. The deputies will be deployed in the area for five to seven days. The deputies are deployed as part of mutual aid agreements between all counties across the state, and are coordinated by the California Office of Emergency Services. As of press deadline on Sept. 7, the fire was at about 50% containment. “We have the unfortunate benefit of having extensive experience in handling large scale fires,” said Ayub. “Our staff, along with many of our neighboring peace officers, will now take that experience to protect and evacuate those facing the harsh realities of the Caldor Fire.” Navy Region commander visits Naval Base Ventura County On Aug. 30, Rear Admiral Stephen D. Barnett, commander, Navy Region Southwest, visited Naval Base Ventura County and toured Point Mugu and Port Hueneme base areas. He said the tour provided an opportunity “to review the capabilities to complete fleet missions” and to get an understanding of “the support” he can provide for the base efforts. The tour included force protection projects, Seabee operations and the future “port site of the extralarge unmanned undersea vehicle prototypes.” According to United States Navy records, Navy Base Ventura County operates the world’s “largest instrumented sea range.” Barnett, originally from Columbia, Tennessee, was sworn into command in July of this year and is the 53rd commander of the region. Ramirez hosts “No on Recall” Conference. On Tuesday, Sept. 7, Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez along with John Zaragoza, Mayor of Oxnard, and other local elected officials gathered at the Oxnard Main Library to urge local residents to vote no in the recall election of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Speakers cited Newsom’s record and echoed his office’s messaging that the recall effort is a “power grab.” “As someone who has lost a family member and friends to COVID-19, I trust Governor Newsom to lead us through this crisis,” said Ramirez in a written statement prior to the gathering.

T

he manic cacophony of western gulls was too frantic to pass up, diverting my attention span toward drama-filled blue skies as a keystone species buzzed a pelagically prominent, weather-beaten seabird rookery. As I kayaked toward the commotion, I soon realized I was in the presence of an apex predator wreaking havoc over Scorpion Rock near the southeast end of Santa Cruz Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park. The lone bald eagle possessed antagonistic tendencies as it repeatedly dive-bombed guano-covered Scorpion Rock in what appeared to be for the pure joy of it. I could see its steely gaze as it sent at least 100 gulls at a time into a dizzying tizzy, which swarmed the steady glide of this majestic raptor. Bald eagles eat fish, not western gulls. Once the eagle had (apparently) satisfied its craving for disrupting the plethora of angry gulls, it soared back to a small grove of toyon and island oak trees overlooking a shimmering, tranquil cove just southeast of Little Scorpion Anchorage.

Return to the Channel

Later that afternoon I kayaked to that same serene cove and discovered the same adult bald eagle roosting comfortably in that secluded grove. Perched next to it was a subadult bald eagle: Easily the same size as the adult, yet still adorned in its youthful, mottled feathers. The mature eagle had a blue tag on its wings, signifying that it was a Channel Islands National Park bird. The juvenile possessed an orange band barely visible on its lower left leg, and only seen when it was flying “Male A-03 hatched at the Fraser Point nest on western Santa Cruz in 2017,” said Dr. Peter Sharpe, a wildlife biologist with the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS), speaking on the blue tagged bald eagle. “We’ll have to keep an eye on the Scorpion Anchorage area next year.” Sharpe has been instrumental in returning bald eagles back to the Northern Channel Islands (NCI), those islands — Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel — that make up four of the five isles in the national park. Bald eagle numbers declined dramatically in the Channel Islands in the 1970s as the result of DDT pesticides. When DDT became outlawed in 1972, pesticides were dumped into portions of the Southern California Bight by the Montrose Chemical Corporation. The bight, a 426-mile-long stretch of curved coastline that runs along the West Coast of the United States and Mexico, reaches from Point Conception in California to Punta Colonet in Baja California, plus the area of the Pacific Ocean defined by that curve. This includes all eight of California’s Channel Islands, the Coronado Islands, and Islas de Todo Santos of Baja California. DDT in the bight had a devastating impact on bald eagles. It caused them to lay thin-shelled eggs that could not survive the incubation process and were crushed by the parents. Generations of eagles were lost across the island chain. Eventually bald eagles vanished from the Northern Channel Islands altogether. After about a 50-year absence, the recovery and return of bald eagles to the northern chain began in 2002-06. During those years of recovery, 12 bald eaglets at 8-weeks-old were placed in hack towers (structures used to simulate nesting) each year. At that age, raptors are not ready to fly, but biologists wanted the eaglets to feel the ocean air in their wings and get a good look at their old historic habitat, preparing them for life on the islands. Each hack tower was

raised about 15 feet off the ground and equipped with a perch and a nest. A trap door in the back of the hack tower was used to feed the eaglets fish without any human imprint. After another four weeks, the doors were opened, and the eagles flew when they were ready. It’s been almost 20 years since that recovery began. And this keystone species is making an indelible mark on a fragile island biome. Other circumstances might have given the species a boost as well. With the new pier being constructed at Scorpion Anchorage beginning in November 2019 and finishing in February 2021, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors were kept away from the main hub in the national park. That’s likely when A-03 and the subadult eagle made the region their own.

Where Eagles Dare

A-03 isn’t alone within the Scorpion Anchorage region. Keeping company with the 4-year-old bald eagle is that juvenile. Cloaked in mottled feathers, I’ve noticed it flying over Scorpion Anchorage and catching fish on its own, but also hanging out in that grove of trees with the adult near the southeast end of the most biodiverse islet off the California Coast. Currently there is no background on this impressive looking raptor, which currently is something of a “mystery” eagle. For biologists, two scenarios come to mind “The subadult looks like it is still a year or two away from breeding, but maybe they’ll stick together,” explained Sharpe, after viewing my images. The other scenario revolves around the orange band on the juvenile’s lower left leg. Bald eagles are monogamous birds, and this subadult might be the offspring of A-03. The adult bird has not been seen with a mate, however, so the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear. “If it’s banded, then it’s obviously likely from another known nest on the island,” said Nathan Melling, also a biologist with IWS working with bald eagles on the Channel Islands. “If not, then it could be the offspring of 03 from an unknown nest in the area.” In any event, bald eagles have made steady strides recovering across the craggy archipelago. Currently, there were 12 known breeding bald eagle pairs on the NCI in 2021, producing 14 fledglings. There are at least another 10 bald eagles that are young or non-breeding birds learning how things work on the chain. There are around 50 bald eagles in all on NCI.

As I sat in my kayak gazing up at A-03 preening on its lofty, volcanic crag surrounded by stands of dormant giant coreopsis, I waited patiently for it to take flight and extend its impressive wingspan over cobalt blue waters and a thick canopy of giant bladder kelp. It was repeatedly being dive-bombed by irritable gulls. Nearly 90 minutes later and tolerant no more, it eventually flew off. I followed it through my 300mm lens until it was a mere speck through my viewfinder, the vast ocean realm vital to its existence surrounding the teeming Northern Channel Islands. Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo recently announced that Mr. David Edsall, Esq. and Mrs. Teri Edsall have received the prestigious 2021 Medici Award, the highest recognition presented by SCIART. The award recognizes exceptional support provided by individuals to the arts organization. David Edsall, the founding partner of Camarillobased Edsall Law, served on the SCIART Board of Directors from 2013 to 2016, and helped recruit key stakeholders from the business community to expand the organization’s outreach. Teri Edsall served for two years as chair of the gala committee for Art à la Mode, helping to transform the event into one of SCIART’s premier fundraising events and celebrations. Maggie Kildee, co-founder of SCIART and former member of the board, said, “Teri and David have been a large part of Studio Channel Islands’ success. They have given of their time, their energy and their money to keep this organization growing. David’s expertise as a lawyer and his years of service on the board were of great value as we grew. Teri’s work leading past galas and other events clearly added to their success. The Edsalls’ appreciation of art, both for themselves and for the community, has been outstanding!” The Edsalls will receive the Medici Award as

Electricity, exhilaration and gratitude The Ojai Music Festival returns in 2021

orgive Ara Guzelimian if he sounds a bit excited — over excited, even — when he talks about the upcoming Ojai Music Festival. “I’ve had lots of emails with capital letters and exclamation points from the artists who will be performing this year,” chuckled the festival’s artistic and executive director. “The desire to make music for someone else is such a powerful inner drive, and now that we’re having the chance to finally do so again after being idled by the pandemic — well, what we’re feeling, I think, is close to exhilaration.” An understatement, for sure. The Ojai Music Festival is celebrating its 75th anniversary Sept. 16-19, and its return after the pandemic-enforced cancellation of 2020. This year’s event will be bringing in both new and returning performers, to the delight of music lovers who are thrilled to welcome back a tradition that has received worldwide acclaim. “The response from the public has been very positive, with early sales of festival passes exceeding those of recent events,” said Guzelimian. “It speaks to people’s desire to reclaim their lives.” Under the direction of Guzelimian and music director John Adams, the 2021 Ojai Music Festival is highlighting its California heritage with an array of local artists and composers, while also embracing those from the world stage and maintaining its adventurous spirit and approach to presenting new music. The list of selections includes the world premieres of “Sunt Lacrimae Rerum” by Dylan Mattingly and the revised version of Gabriela Ortiz’s “La Calaca,” along with the West Coast premiere of Samuel Adams’ “Chamber Concerto” and the first concert performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Objets Trouvés.” Among those making their Ojai debuts are Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi, pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, the Attacca Quartet, violinist Miranda Cuckson, and recorder player Anna Margules. Returning artists include pianist/composer Timo Andres, the LA Phil New Music Group, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The event is a homecoming of sorts for Guzelimian, a native Southern Californian who first attended the Ojai Festival while a college student at UCLA, and served as its artistic director in the mid-1990s. He recently stepped down after 13 years as provost and dean of the Juilliard School in New York City, following eight years as senior director and artistic advisor of Carnegie Hall. He spoke with the Ventura County Reporter by phone prior to returning from New York.

VCR: After a year off due to the pandemic, what’s it like to be doing live music again?

Guzelimian: It’s pretty thrilling. We’re all so deeply craving things in our lives that put us together and in contact with each other. The few musical events I’ve gone to outdoors recently have had not only an extra electricity, but also such a tangible sense of gratitude that we can do what we love.

How has the pandemic affected your plans for this coming festival?

We’ve all learned to be part-time epidemiologists and public health experts, and we’re very blessed to get constant advice from county health and hospital officials. So we have quite a significant set of fairly strict protocols; we require proof of vaccination and masking, to assure the highest standards of safety and protection for everyone.

Is the festival scaling back or adding more events compared to past years? And what about the tone or focus of the festival?

It’s slightly scaled back, but fairly comparable to the norm of the last 10 years. As far as tone, it’s very positive. This is the 75th festival, and because I grew up in Southern California, and have come to Ojai since I was a teenager, 22 — — September 9, 2021

0909_VCReporter_MUSIC full pg.indd 22

I wanted it to be a homecoming of sorts; that was taking formation before the pandemic and has taken on greater urgency since. So there is a California-centric element among composers and performers, to honor California’s heritage. John Adams, our music director and a Northern California native, is bringing in six younger composers, two of them native Californians. I also wanted performers who are new to our audience as well as those who honor the festival’s history, like the LA Chamber and LA Phil. Southern California has one of the biggest pools of great freelance musicians in the world, and so many of them suffered in the pandemic and had no income at all, so we wanted to honor them. I also wanted to honor California’s Native heritage, so Chumash Elder Julie Tumamait will do a blessing before the Friday night concert, and lead a series of events exploring the music, culture and cosmology of the Indigenous peoples of the Ojai Valley, looking at the landscape through the eyes of culture and legend. Because we get the name “Ojai” from the Ventureño Chumash word “Awha’y,” meaning “Moon.” And we will do recent concerts featuring Mexican music, since this area was once part of Mexico and Spain. Gabriel Ortiz, the leading composer in Mexico today, will be present for the performance of several of her works.

Normally the festival is held in June, so what does September present in the way of challenges and opportunities?

It’s not the month, it’s just a matter of coming back to life, and doing it under these circumstances. There will be the inconvenience of strict protocols, but there is a pretty universal understanding among everyone that this is what it takes to make live music possible.

After having been in New York for several years at Julliard, what does it mean for you to be involved in California once again?

The call of home is so intense. I usually drive into Ojai from Ventura, and my first sight of the Ojai Valley is something I feel deeply. The valley and the festival [are] so wrapped with memory and meaning, and I just want to do all I can to renew that spirit even in the face of challenges. The 75th Ojai Music Festival takes place Sept. 16-19 at several venues in Ojai, starting with “Prelude to a Festival” on Sept. 16, 9 p.m. at Libbey Bowl. Events will be live-streamed and later archived at OjaiFestival.org. Proof of vaccination will be required for all ticket holders, as will masks and social distancing at all concerts and events. For tickets and other information, call 805-646-2053 or visit OjaiFestival.org.

The Camera Sutra

I really like the girl I’m dating, except for one thing. On every date, she asks me to take photos of her for Instagram. Afterward, she consults me repeatedly on which will “get the most likes.” I’m starting to get really annoyed, and I find it cuts into my enjoyment of our time together. She even did this on my birthday! — Irritated Psychologist Erich Fromm wrote, “Mature love says: ‘I need you because I love you.’” He died in 1980, 30-some years before Instagram-infused love: “I need you, love, because my telescoping selfie stick won’t fit in my cute purse.” This girl’s far from alone in turning every occasion short of stints on the toilet into a photo op. Social media (and Instagram especially) transformed fishing for compliments into a business model. #admirationvampires Some young women — especially 20-somethings with a still-murky sense of identity — might feel they don’t exist in any meaningful way if they don’t post pix and videos of themselves to score likes and gain followers. #KeepingUpWithTheInstadashians There’s also the lure of easy money for those who can rack up an audience: potentially making big “influencer” bucks just by showing up to events in some pop-up shop’s dress and striking a bunch of poses they copied off Beyonce. Chances are you went on Tinder or Hinge or whatever in hopes of landing a girlfriend, not unpaid work as a photographer. Saying yes to taking this girl’s pic the first time — before you realized it would be an every-date thing — probably seemed like a one-off request and thus not a big deal. But now you’re annoyed that you’re constantly being pressed into photo slavehood. Even your birthday got co-opted into a #MeMeMeMe #takemypicture celebration of her personal “brand.” The problem is not that she’s asking but that you keep going along with photographing her. There’s a way out of this — and a way to get women to respect you instead of seeing you as a chump they can use and eventually lose — and it’s assertiveness. Social psychologist Daniel Ames and

0909_VCReporter_ADVICE-ASTRO.indd 0909_VCReporter_CLASSIFIEDS.indd 2323

his colleagues define assertiveness as “the degree to which someone stands up” for their own needs and interests “when they are faced with someone else who does not want the same outcomes.” Assertiveness allows you to be in charge of your life instead of becoming the tool of anyone who wants to use you: basically living like an insect that gets batted around by a cat. People who default to a passive approach — just doing whatever’s asked of them, no matter how they dread it — often have a deep fear of rejection. They act on the mistaken belief that “the way to be accepted and appreciated by others is to give and give,” explains clinical psychologist Randy Paterson. This isn’t to say you should live like an accountant, calculating to the penny or the calorie whether the give and take between you and another person is exactly 50/50 at all times. What matters is your motivation: giving to a woman because it feels good to make her happy or, say, safer (like if you install burglar-frustrating thingies on her windows). That’s healthy giving — in contrast with emotionally indentured Boy Scout-hood: fulfilling the terms of a contract that exists only in your head, in which you re-sod a woman’s lawn, rotate her tires, and/or become her pro bono “palace photographer” so she won’t kick you to the curb. This “chore-bribe your way to love ’n’ sex” model tends to work about as well as my attempt, as a lonely, picked-on little kid, to geek my way into having friends. In second grade, two girls approached me, worksheets in hand, and said they’d be my friend if I did their math homework during recess. I got to work with my thick No. 2 pencil. Maybe 10 minutes later, I finished — and they immediately succumbed to childhood amnesia. Neither girl even spoke to me again — all the way through the end of 12th grade. The willingness to assert yourself is a reflection of self-respect: the belief that you have value and have a right to be treated as if you and your needs matter. But say your current level of self-respect is on the low side. You can still act like a person with strong self-respect: Explain what you want — in this case, to retire from fashion photography and post-date photo selection. Be prepared. It’s possible she’ll ditch you for expressing the inconvenient need to quit as her Instagram documentarian. But if your needs and feelings are of little interest to her, maybe you can view getting yourself dumped by her not as a tragedy but as a point of pride: the first day of the rest of your living with self-respect. Pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26, a hearing has been scheduled for your child. You are hereby notified that you may appear on 12/01/2021, at 8:30 a.m., or as soon as counsel can be heard in Courtroom J1 of this Court at Juvenile Justice Center 4353 Vineyard Ave. Oxnard, CA 93036. YOU ARE FURTHER ADVISED as follows: At the hearing the Court must choose and implement one of the following permanent plans for the child: adoption, guardianship, or long term foster care. Parental rights may be terminated at this hearing. On 12/01/2021, the Human Services Agency will recommend termination of parental rights. The child may be ordered placed in long term foster care, subject to the regular review of the Juvenile Court; or, a legal guardian may be appointed for the child and letters of guardianship be issued; or, adoption may be identified as the permanent placement goal and the Court may order that efforts be made to locate an appropriate adoptive family for the child for a period not to exceed 180 days and set the matter for further review; or, parental rights may be terminated. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
