NEWS for the unhoused The longest night Memorial who have died this year

by Kimberly Rivers

kimberly@vcreporter.com

or the past 13-14 years, members of various faiths have come together for an event called Lift Up Your Voice to End Homelessness. The event, held close to the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, is a memorial of unhoused residents of Ventura County who have passed away in the past 12 months. The event coordinated by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura is typically held at Plaza Park in Ventura and the names of those who died are read aloud. Temporary markers, mimicking headstones, with the names written on them are erected in the park. The Winter Solstice is on Dec. 21. Due to the pandemic, however, the gathering cannot be held safely, according to Kathleen “Kappy” Paulson, event co-chair. As of early November there were 75 people on the memorial list. Paulson says they expect more to be added by the end of the year. The group receives the names from the coroner’s office and from various social service providers in the county. As the list cannot be read this The cardboard headstones for the 2019 Lift Up Your Voice to End year at an event, organizers have asked that the names be printed in the paper. Census likely undercounted the homeless Workers report flawed process by Kimberly Rivers

T

kimberly@vcreporter.com

he messaging around the 2020 Census was to be counted. Getting an accurate count was a stated goal at every turn, and yet census workers in Ventura County report that when it came to counting the homeless population, it’s unlikely that an accurate count took place. “It was done very poorly. I don’t think the homeless population of Ventura County got a good count,” said Dayana Huerta, a resident of Oxnard who worked on the 2020 Census count in Ventura County. She visited communities in Oxnard and was part of the four-person team that did a count of unhoused people on a single night in September. “I know we had a limited amount of time and limited workers, but we could have done a twonight count.” Huerta explained that census workers did a preliminary look at homeless encampments in March, and then the actual count took place on a night in September. Most were vacant in September during the actual count. “I don’t think they realized the homeless move around,” said Huerta. The group counted just six people in September. Based on what was seen in March, she estimated that the count should have been around 100 for those locations. Another problem was that census workers were instructed to conduct the count from a car, rather than getting out and speaking with people. “I was told four times not to talk to anyone in the media,” said Brandon Hutchinson, a resident of Camarillo, who was also hired for the 2020 Census count in Ventura County and was in the same group with Huerta during the nighttime count. At first he thought he’d be part of something that was really trying to get a good count. Initially, he did some census work in residential communities. There “we were very much more focused on making sure to get as much information and details as you can for people living in houses. It was a stark contrast” from the process for counting unhoused people. Hutchinson explained that for residential areas, census workers get very detailed information and that there is a lot of “oversight. If they don’t fill out” the forms completely the first time, “they keep sending

census workers to their homes. There is so much effort, but then only one night for unhoused people.”

“Counting from a distance”

At first, Hutchinson thought the unhoused count would be done well. During the training he received, census workers were told they’d be going to locations already identified as areas where homeless people would be. They would deliberately go at night, as folks would be likely to be there. Only those who were comfortable were assigned to the “unhoused enumeration” part of the local census count. One group went to homeless shelters and spoke to people in the shelter and staff. A second group would be trained to go out “into the streets, focused on areas where unhoused people were living,” outside of the shelters. “We were instructed not to wake or disturb anyone, but if someone was awake already we should engage with them as long as they were willing to be engaged,” Hutchinson explained. They were told to complete the survey with them, “just like someone who lived at a home,” and that they could ask about how many people are usually in that area to get a more accurate count. “That is what we were trained to do.” During training the group, made up of men and women, was also told to stay together. No one wanted a scenario where anyone felt unsafe. But prior to the night count, Hutchinson said there was a call “with one of our supervisors,” and several other supervisors, who told census workers that they would be “disregarding most of” the training they’d received. “We were not going to be actually talking to anyone,” and the supervisors said “they don’t want to talk to us anyway.” Hutchinson said he asked the supervisor “What are we doing if we are not actually completing interviews?” He was told he’d be “counting from a distance.” This raised questions for him about whether it was a “good representation” of the true number of unhoused people in the county. “It’s my opinion that you’re going to get much less accurate information without the interview, there’s no demographic information, you’re just counting bodies.” On the night of the actual count

he was again told “by two other supervisors, ‘don’t try to talk to anyone.’” He acknowledged that it was in the midst of COVID-19 but he didn’t think that was the main reason because the team all went together in the same car. They were told to “drive by the location, don’t stop the car unless we have to, count who we can see from inside the car.” The explanation they were given was that “they don’t want to talk to you and we want you to be safe.”

Planet Oxnard

Hope and light in Oxnard

“Unlikely to be an accurate count”

Hutchinson didn’t think the new instructions had anything to do pandemic. When he pressed about the training they’d received that emphasized the importance of an interview, supervisors said he could get out of the car if he wanted to. And on the night of the count, he did. But he felt that the locations selected to count were not chosen well and they only tallied a few people. He was surprised that they were sent to locations like a bus stop or park bench area. These were places where observers in March saw homeless people hanging out but “they were not making a residence out of that place.” He was expecting to do a count in the river bottom, but there was no counting done in that area. The census group went to 10 locations in Oxnard that night. Hutchinson said they counted four people total at two locations. They had some Ventura addresses to visit but didn’t get to them. He doesn’t know if anyone counted locations anywhere else in the county. Huerta said she was expecting a 12-hour shift, but they only worked for six hours. She said the census information is key to various groups getting access to resources and services. “If I had just done the job I was being asked to do, it would have been a very easy way to get good money for doing nothing. They would have been happy [with us] just driving around and filling out paperwork, that’s really how it felt to me,” said Hutchinson. He was disappointed because he’s interested in the issue of homelessness and hoped the work would do some good. “It was really strange to be told to go against our training...it’s unlikely to be an accurate count.”

Oxnard’s Plaza Park is all lit up for the 2020 holiday season. Photo by Aurelio Ocampo

O

xnard is finally ready for the holidays! Last week, the large tree in Plaza Park — rumored to be the largest Christmas tree in Ventura County — was lit in sparkling lights, which were wrapped around its trunk and strung throughout its canopy. While COVID-19 necessitated a virtual tree-lighting ceremony (a pre-recorded video was released on Dec. 11), Gary Blum, vice chair of the Oxnard Downtowners Foundation, assures everyone that the spirit of Christmas endures. “When downtown’s holiday events could not allow people to gather, the Oxnard Downtowners Foundation and Oxnard Downtown Management District knew that they had to think of new and different ideas,” Blum explained. The theme for December 2020 is being called “A Season of Hope.” In addition to the large tree, a second tree in Plaza Park was lit up and a large “HOPE” sign was installed as well. “We want to encourage everyone to keep up the hope,” Blum said, noting that new and addi-

tional decorations have been put up throughout the downtown area. ”Part of launching ‘A Season of Hope’ theme this year was improving our holiday decor at Plaza Park and downtown,” confirmed Downtown Director Abel Magana. The ever-popular Christmas Tree Lane is now officially open as well. Houses in Oxnard’s Heritage District between First and Fifth and F and G streets are bedecked in lights with charming tableaux and other decorations on the front lawns. This year, in order to maintain a safe social distance, residents have asked the public to drive through the neighborhood rather than walk, and to consider coming during non-peak nights (Sundays through Thursdays) to help ease traffic. Homes will be lit from dusk until 10 p.m. every evening through Dec. 27. “We’re trying to really make it festive,” Blum said. For more information, visit downtownoxnard.org/holidays.. — Nancy D. ild guess: What we all want this year (whether you celebrate the holidays or not) is to see the loved ones we’ve been missing lo these many months. Something wrapped in pretty paper and tied with a bow won’t make up for that. But while we’re waiting for better days, a thoughtful gift can help spread some holiday cheer until we can all gather again. Supporting locally owned businesses with our last-minute gift buying is one way to share the love during these pandemic-tough times and it can be a way to prompt us to look beyond the normal gift options and find something unique. Remnants on Main

I’ve gotten cool, vintage jewelry at this antique shop in Downtown Santa Paula. I just really like the one-of-akind treasure hunt that can’t be experienced anywhere else. Last year, I got my sister a Prohibition Era glass pitcher that is really great. 944 E. Main St., Santa Paula, 805-204-6292, www.remnantsonmain.com.

Sea Things

Emerald sea glass beaded necklace.

I’ve been shopping at Sea Things for as long as it’s been there, which is at least 20 years. I remember going in there with my daughter Ruby when she was little. It’s a great little shop for lovers of the sea! 508 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura, 805-648-1954, www.seathingsventura.com.

Whyte Rabitt Fragrance Oil

Trance makes truly exceptional fragrances using minimally invasive techniques, often employing ingredients grown on its organic farm in Ojai. Whyte Rabitt is my absolute favorite — both earthy and fresh, with notes of musk, jasmine and grapefruit. My sister and mom love this scent as much as I do, and it’s effortless to order online and ship. $36. Trance, www.tranceessence.com.

Goat Milk Beer Soap

Goat milk is packed with vitamins and triglycerides and has a pH level closer to human skin, making it wonderfully moisturizing and gentle when used in skin care products, and particularly good for sensitive skin. I like all of Fillmore-based Chivas’ products, but the Beer Soap line is very versatile. The scents are pleasant without being cloying, pungent or flowery — perfect for everyone! The addition of beer makes this soap good at exfoliating, fighting acne, tightening and firming. $40 for a pack of four 4 oz. bars. 805-727-3121, www.chivasskincare.com.

Toys, crafts and novelties from Santa Paula Art Museum

Art museums are great places to find cool, unusual gifts — toys in particular! Puzzles, playing cards, funky paper dolls, portable crafting kits . . . If you’re shopping for a kid and thinking beyond Barbies and LEGOs, there are some fun options here. Good ideas for playful grown-ups, too. You can order online for pickup, or shop in the store by appointment. $4-$37. Santa Paula Art Museum, 117 N. Tenth St., Santa Paula, 805-525-5554, www.santapaulaartmuseum.square.site.

Wilder Gin Chocolate candy canes from Top This.

Handmade Chocolates

I am recommending my two favorite local chocolatiers, because I hate the idea of having to choose. Gorgeous, gourmet Ex Voto has the prettiest bonbons and some of the most sophisticated flavor combinations. Top This Chocolate specializes in molded chocolate (the candy canes are adorable), chocolate-covered Oreos and customizable chocolate bars — you’ll have a blast picking out your toppings and watching staff put it together. Both make it easy to shop online and ship, but you might grab a mask and pop in . . . just to consider all your options. Ex Voto Chocolates and Confections, 2646 E. Main St., Ventura, 805-667-9228, www. exvotochocolates.com. Top This Chocolate, 1559 Spinnaker Drive, Suite 109, Ventura Harbor, 805-535-4167, www.topthischocolate.com.

Ventura Spirits Company distills, ages and bottles brandy, vodka and other craft spirits using mostly locally sourced ingredients. I’m partial to the Wilder Gin, flavored with wild-harvested native botanicals, including purple sage, bay leaf and Pixie mandarin peel. Its flavor has been likened to a hike in the Ojai Valley after a rain. Herbaceous, fresh and available for pickup from the facility on Ventura Avenue or shipped anywhere in California. $35. Restaurant Gift Certificates

Every restaurant from fast food to four star is being plagued by the repeated pandemic shutdowns. On Stage by Emily Dodi

A

year ago, if someone had told me that I’d be watching an opera from my car (with my dog) in a church parking lot, I would have laughed and called them crazy. Well, here we are, and that’s just what happened. I am so happy that it did because it was wonderful, and I didn’t realize how much I needed it. Experiencing art with other people, even if we were all in our own cars, was beyond entertaining; it was healing. The production was the Pacific Opera Project’s (POP) La Bohème aka “The Hipsters”, which playfully tweaks Giacomo Puccini’s beloved opera. Instead of bohemian Paris circa 1830, the setting is hipster Highland Park circa COVID. The wonderful Oriana Falla and Arnold Livingston Geis play Puccini’s doomed lovers, Mimi and Rodolfo (call him Rudy), who live among a group of gig

Pacific Opera Project’s La Bohème: AKA “The Hipsters” at Camarillo United Methodist Church workers. Their existence is rife with love, jealousy, loss and pain — the stuff of all great opera, and then some. As POP explains, “this year’s production will be extra interesting as the tragedy of the pandemic is woven into the staging, but don’t worry, there will still be plenty of laughs to go along with a few tears.” POP delivered on their promise with a 19th century opera that felt modern and relevant. Part of that was due to the lively performances of the gifted young cast (Ben Lowe, Maria Dominique Lopez, E. Scott Levin, Keith Colclough and Luvi Avendano) and accompaniment by a single piano, beautifully played by music director Parisa Zaeri. The modern settings helped, too, from Rudy’s eclectic loft to a trendy bar, brought to life by director and designer Josh Shaw, as well as the aptly over-the-top costumes by

Maggie Green. English supertitles took cheeky liberties with Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica’s original Italian libretto. Strangely enough, however, the thing that felt most current was Puccini’s original work. Perhaps it’s because the power of his music transcends time. Maybe it’s because Mimi’s story, that of a beautiful Oriana Falla and Arnold Livingston Geis as Mimi and Rudy in La Bohème: AKA “The soul succumbing to a Hipsters”. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play presented by the Ojai Arts Center Theater

The cast of It’s a Wonderful Life during dress rehearsal over Zoom. Photo courtesy of Ojai ACT he announcement read, “Ojai Arts Center Theater makes life wonderful again.” It was a welcome signal that some holiday cheer was on its way. Through the magic of Zoom, director Gai Jones and her cast and crew bring Joe Landry’s stage play, based

1217_VCReporter_ART+CULTURE.indd 17

on the beloved holiday film classic It’s a Wonderful Life, to screens everywhere. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is available on demand through Dec. 19. From the moment the first actor appears on screen, it’s clear everyone is thrilled to be

“onstage” again. The streaming production is the first from Ojai Art Center Theater (OACT) since the pandemic “put a sudden end to the theater’s 2020 season.” Creating a show, especially for the holidays, was something OACT was determined to do.

“We need to know that even though we’re social distancing, theater can bring us together,” Jones said. “The crew and cast . . . have created a digital performance which brings the theme home. It is a wonderful life; we’re glad you were born.” Even over Zoom, it takes a small village to pull a theatrical production together. Phil Nemy and Emily Hall star as George and Mary Bailey. Paul Carpenter plays Clarence and Tom Hall is Joseph. Mr. Potter is played by Douglas Parker. Arshan Barati, Audrin Monfared, Hadley Julca and Amber Hodges appear as the younger versions of George, Harry, Violet and Mary. The large cast also includes Larry Swartz, Bill Spellman, Lenny Klaif, Lisa Gosselin, Kelly Hollis, John Hankins, Poeme Howard, Marilyn Lazik, Linda Thompson, Ashley Osler, Adam Dunn, Sue Barry, Suzy Thatcher, Shannon Penrith, Sheila McCarthy, Dyana Landis, Lily Rose Julca, Lynne Van Emmerick and Jahan Barati. The crew includes stage manager Sue Barry, costumer Sheryl Jo Bedal, hair stylist and hand choreographer Amber Hodge, on-camera foley artist

and video editor Adam Dunn, tech advisor Paul Carpenter and guitarist Hadley Julca. Bringing the production to audiences via Zoom presented Jones et al with unique challenges. “Zoom is another world,” Jones explained. “The actors might all perform in different locations but they still need to come together as an ensemble.” The experience prompted the play’s 29 actors, ranging in ages from 8 to 83, to learn new skills and adapt to a whole new “venue.” For some of the crew, working via Zoom meant their work was narrowed in focus. Take costumer Bedal, who made great use of her vast collection of vintage hats. “It’s actually the fastest and easiest I’ve gotten a show costumed,” she said. “Wearing period hats is important to draw the audience into the late 1940s.” Although it is performed in the digital universe, complete with its imperfections, the show reminds us what is perfectly true: that we are here together and it really is a wonderful life. It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play through Dec.19 on demand. Tickets available at ojaiact.org/iawl. December 17, 2020 — — 17

Two drive-in concert series go on hiatus by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

wo concert venues that have made live entertainment possible during the pandemic will end 2020 on a quiet note. Live music and comedy at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center (OPAC) as well as Concerts in Your Car at the Ventura County Fairgrounds are on hiatus for the rest of the season.

Wind damage ends the season for Concerts in Your Car

Blame it on the weather. The massive stage at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, viewable from all sides and equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and oversized screens, lost its roof during the 35 mph Santa Ana winds that blew through the county on Dec. 7. “It was like a hurricane came through,” said Vincenzo Giammanco, founder and CEO of CBF Productions. This was actually the second time the stage, built over the summer, lost its roof: It blew off the first time about six weeks ago.

experience can still be enjoyed nightly through Jan. 2. Giammanco said that “the response has been great! I feel like a lot of people need something like that right now.” Looking back on the concert series, which debuted in June with a performance by Ventura native Super Duper Kyle, Giammanco said that it’s been a surprisingly good ride. “I think it was better than expected. I had this vision of how it was going to be, and it formed into this new entertainment space. There’s something about hanging out with your own friends and family in a car in front of this big stage. It’s a new way to enjoy live entertainment.”

The roof of the Concerts in Your Car stage in Ventura blew off for the second time during heavy winds on Dec. 7, 2020. Photo by Vincenzo Giammanco/CBF Productions Giammanco described the damage caused this month as, “The nail in the coffin. The roof blew off again. We had to take down the stage to verify the integrity of the steel. And the sound board and fencing were damaged . . . financially it didn’t make sense to keep going.” Giammanco estimated the collective damage at $60,000. While the final music concert, featuring Iration, took place on Dec. 4, the venue had to cancel scheduled performances of The Nutcracker ballet and Santa Saves Christmas!, as well as all film screenings offered through the Movies in Your Car series. “We got through 98 percent of the season,” Giammanco said. “So we’re grateful for that.” Happily, the Holidays in Your Car light show was not affected, and the drive-through

CBF’s Del Mar Fairgrounds location continues full force. And the company plans to build on its success in Ventura next year, when it reopens in the spring of 2021. While he couldn’t name names, Giammanco promised that good things are ahead. “We have a lot of interest from a lot of artists — high-caliber people that traditionally wouldn’t come to Ventura. It’s very promising and exciting!” www.concertsinyourcar.com/ventura

COVID surge shuts down OPAC events “The city asked us to take a hiatus because of the spike in COVID,” explained Lance Sterling, owner of Sterling Venue Ventures,

which operates several nightclubs in Southern California, including The Canyon in Agoura Hills. While The Canyon hasn’t been in operation for months, Sterling had been presenting shows at OPAC. A temporary use permit allowed him to offer drive-in live music concerts, called Carpool Jams, in the parking lot. In addition, he opened a full-service restaurant onsite with a large outdoor patio where Sterling and the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club partnered up to present the Canyon Comedy Club, featuring a mix of live comedy and music. The restaurant patio had to close for three weeks under California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s most recent regional stay-at-home order. While the drive-in events could have continued, Sterling decided to take a break from those as well after speaking with Oxnard city officials. It was just simpler in some ways, too. “The rules have changed so many times,” Sterling said. “I don’t think we had two weeks [of programming] in a row.” The three-week shutdown is yet another setback in what has been a devastating fiscal year. While audiences and entertainers appreciated the live shows, the venue itself didn’t make a An electric guitar signed by Buddy Guy is one of lot of money. several collectible instruments currently being put up “Our revenues are off by 96 for auction by The Canyon owner Lance Sterling. percent,” Sterling said. “My Photo courtesy of The Canyon monthly payroll is 10 times the “I took my guitar collection — 300 to 400 amount of revenue we bring in.” “The hardest thing for me,” he contin- guitars — and put it up for sale,” he said. ued, “is just the way the rules are strucThese include instruments signed by Buddy tured in California. ADVICE GODDESS

Adoptee Strainer

My boyfriend, who was adopted as an infant, just heard from his birth mom for the first time ever. She contacted him out of the blue, sending a perfectly nice message, not expecting anything from him. Instead of responding to it, he’s just sort of shutting down. Times are tough enough, and I don’t think it’s healthy to bottle up his feelings. However, whenever I point that out or ask him how he feels, he says he doesn’t want to talk about it. How can I help motivate him to process his feelings? — Caring Girlfriend We all have to deal with rejection,

by amy alkon

but most of us get our first taste of it at 6 — years old, that is, not six minutes after a nurse cuts our umbilical cord. Emotions are basically the helper elves of humanity. They evolved to motivate behavior to help ancestral humans survive, mate, and pass on their genes. We tend to see “negative” emotions like sadness and anger as damaging, but evolutionary researcher Randolph Nesse, M.D., explains they are just as functional as “positive” emotions. Negative emotions are the brakes for behavior that isn’t working for us. Though, these days, minor bad choices usually aren’t fatal, our psychology is calibrated as if they could be. The psychological operating system driving our behavior today is adapted for a harsh ancestral hunter-gatherer environment. Say some Neanderbro had the brilliant idea that he’d catch wild game for dinner by asking it nicely to throw itself onto his spear. But say, after collecting only windblown dust on his spearhead, the emotions he felt were happiness and excitement. He’d stick with his hunting approach and end up dining on tree-bark rib-eyes, the culinary choice of people who slowly starve to death.

Though men get depressed just like women do, another evolutionary researcher, psychologist Joyce Benenson, notes that men tend to be less emotionally sensitive than women, showing less fear and sadness from infancy on. Men are also less emotionally fluent, meaning they have trouble understanding exactly what they’re feeling, which, in turn, keeps them from being able to put names to their emotions. Though these seem like shortcomings, they serve men’s evolved role as the “warriors” of our species. In combat, men would put themselves and their fellow warriors at risk if they jabber on about how terrified they are and plop down on the battlefield for a good cry. How does your boyfriend feel? Best guess: Emotionally overwhelmed. If so, his “shutting down” makes sense. It’s basically the human version of overloaded electrical wiring triggering a circuit breaker in your house — as opposed to keeping the juice flowing and triggering an electrical fire, turning your home into a two-bedroom, two-bath pile of smoking ash. Sigmund Freud, who saw having actual evidence to support his claims

an unnecessary bother, drove the widespread assumption that “repression” — avoiding upsetting thoughts to prevent or minimize anxiety — is emotionally and physically destructive. In fact, clinical psychologist Karin Coifman and her colleagues observe that there’s “a small and relatively inconsistent body of evidence” that associates “repressive coping” with health costs. Research increasingly suggests it can be “adaptive” — beneficial — for a person to direct their attention away from experiences that cause negative feelings (especially negative feelings about themself...say, like being “given up” for adoption). And the Coifman team’s own study finds that the “emotional dissociation” of repressive coping can actually lead to better adjustment, fewer health complaints, and “a less significant medical history.” Consider, too, that men often “speak” through action rather than words. Your boyfriend is probably flooded with uncertainty about what he should do: contact his birth mom, meet with her, do nothing. You can help him — by being loving and supportive as he goes about this his way. If

he still seems to be suffering a month from now, you might Google adoptee discussion boards and ask him whether you could give him the links. Reading about others’ feelings and experiences could help him understand his own feelings and decide how he’ll proceed. Ultimately, the emotional expressiveness that comes naturally to many women is unnatural for many men. Benenson explains that women tend to bond through “sharing vulnerabilities” and soothe themselves by talking about their feelings, behavior that would leave most men feeling exposed and threatened. This provides helpful perspective on men’s seemingly counterproductive reactions to bad stuff that happens. True story from one of my male friends: “A few years ago, I mentioned to my wife that there was a guy at work who was a real pain in the butt. She said, ‘Do you want to talk about it?’ I said, ‘I just did.’” Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. Got a problem? FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

Temporary gods are deities who come alive and become available for particular functions, and are not otherwise necessary or called upon. For instance, in ancient Greece, the god Myiagros showed up when humans made sacrifices to the goddess Athena. His task was to shoo away flies. I encourage you to invent or invoke such a spirit for the work you have ahead of you. And what’s that work? 1. To translate your recent discoveries into practical plans. 2. To channel your new-found freedom into strategies that will ensure freedom will last. 3. To infuse the details of daily life with the big visions you’ve harvested recently. What will you name your temporary god?

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Author Virginia Woolf said that we don’t wholly experience the unique feelings that arise in any particular moment. They take a while to completely settle in, unfold, and expand. From her perspective, then, we rarely “have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.” With that as your starting point, Taurus, I invite you to take a journey through the last 11 months and thoroughly evolve all the emotions that weren’t entirely ripe when they originally appeared. Now is an excellent time to deepen your experience of what has already happened; to fully bloom the seeds that have been planted.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

“Wonder is a bulky emotion,” writes author Diane Ackerman. “When you let it fill your heart and mind, there isn’t room for anxiety, distress, or anything else.” I’d love for you to use her observation as a prescription in 2021, Gemini. According to my understanding of

26 —

by rob brezsny

the coming year’s astrological portents, you will have more natural access to wonder and amazement and awe than you’ve had in a long time. And it would make me happy to see you rouse those primal emotions with vigor — so much so that you drive away at least some of the flabby emotions like anxiety, which are often more neurotic than real.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22):

I’ll use the words of Cancerian painter Frida Kahlo to tell you the kind of intimate ally you deserve. If for some inexplicable reason you have not enjoyed a relationship like this before now, I urge you to make 2021 the year that you finally do. And if you HAVE indeed been lucky in this regard, I bet you’ll be even luckier in 2021. Here’s Frida: “You deserve a lover who wants you disheveled . . . who makes you feel safe . . . who wants to dance with you . . . who never gets tired of studying your expressions . . . who listens when you sing, who supports you when you feel shame and respects your freedom . . . who takes away the lies and brings you hope.”

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

In 2019, singer Ariana Grande got Japanese characters tattooed on her palm. She believed them to be a translation of the English phrase “7 Rings,” which was the title of a song she had released. But knowledgeable observers later informed her that the tattoo’s real meaning was “small charcoal grill.” She arranged to have alterations made, but the new version was worse: “Japanese barbecue grill finger.” I offer you this story for two reasons, Leo. First, I applaud the creativity and innovative spirit that have been flowing through you. Second, I want to make sure that you keep them on the right track—

that they continue to express what you want them to express. With proper planning and discernment, they will.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

While sleeping, most of us have over a thousand dreams every year. Many are hard to remember and not worth remembering. But a beloved few can be life-changers. They have the potential to trigger epiphanies that transform our destinies for the better. In my astrological opinion, you are now in a phase when such dreams are more likely than usual. That’s why I invite you to keep a recorder or a pen and notebook by your bed so as to capture them. For inspiration, read this testimony from Jasper Johns, whom some call America’s “foremost living artist”: “One night I dreamed that I painted a large American flag, and the next morning I got up and I went out and bought the materials to begin it.” Painting flags ultimately became one of Johns’ specialties.

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

I composed a prayer that’s in alignment with your current astrological omens. If it feels right, say it daily for the next ten days. Here it is: “Dear Higher Self, Guardian Angel, and Future Me: Please show me how to find or create the key to the part of my own heart that’s locked up. Reveal the secret to dissolving any inhibitions that interfere with my ability to feel all I need to feel. Make it possible for me to get brilliant insights into truths that will enable me to lift my intimate alliances to the next level.”

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

Author Herman Hesse observed, “Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of

pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world.” I hope you will prove him wrong in 2021, Scorpio. According to my reading of astrological omens, the rhythms of life will be in alignment with yours if you do indeed make bold attempts to favor music over noise, joy over pleasure, soul over gold, creative work over business, passion over foolery. Moreover, I think this will be your perfect formula for success—a strategy that will guarantee you’ll feel at home in the world more than ever before.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

According to researcher Nick Watts and his documentary film The Human Footprint, the average person speaks more than 13 million words in a lifetime, or about 4,300 per day. But I suspect and hope that your output will increase in 2021. I think you’ll have more to say than usual—more truths to articulate, more observations to express, more experiences to describe. So please raise your daily quota of self-expression to account for your expanded capacity to share your intelligence with the world.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

“Our thinking should have a vigorous fragrance, like a wheat field on a summer’s night,” wrote philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. I encourage you to adopt that joyful mandate as your own. It’s a perfect time to throw out stale opinions and moldy ideas as you make room for an aromatic array of fresh, spicy notions. To add to your bliss, get rid of musty old feelings and decaying dreams and stinky judgments. That brave cleansing will make room for the arrival of crisp insights that smell really good.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Have you heard the term “catastrophize”? It refers to when people experience a small setback or minor problem but interpret it as being a major misfortune. It’s very important that you not engage in catastrophizing during the coming weeks. I urge you to prevent your imagination from jumping to awful conclusions that aren’t warranted. Use deep breathing and logical thinking to coax yourself into responding calmly. Bonus tip: In my view, the small “setback” you experience could lead to an unexpected opportunity — especially if you resist the temptation to catastrophize.

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

My Buddhist friend Marcia says the ultimate goal of her meditation practice is to know that the material world is an illusion and that there is no such thing “I” or “you,” no past or future. There is only the quality-less ground of being. My Sufi friend Roanne, on the other hand, is a devotee of the poet Rumi. The ultimate goal of her meditation practice is to be in intimate contact, in tender loving communion, with the Divine Friend, the personal face of the Cosmic Intelligence. Given your astrological omens, Pisces, I’d say you’re in a prime position to experience the raw truth of both Marcia’s and Roanne’s ideals. The coming days could bring you amazing spiritual breakthroughs! Homework: Carry out an act of love that’s unique in your history. Testify at FreeWillAstrology.com.
