HOME STRETCH

This has been one of the strangest (possibly the strangest) years of my life. Speaking only for myself, of course, although I suspect many others share this sentiment. COVID-19 challenged all of us in unprecedented ways. And I do mean all of us: I’m not sure any human on Planet Earth was entirely untouched by the pandemic, whether or not they were infected with the coronavirus.

When we look back at 2020, I imagine that it will be with a mingled sense of sadness, disappointment and bewilderment. As 2021 begins, I think the overwhelming emotion is anticipation — for a vaccine, a hug, a sense of normalcy. Our idea of “normal,” however, may have changed by the time we get back to it. Relationships are more precious now. Working in an office seems more optional. Less distraction has led to more time with ourselves and our thoughts. What makes us happy? What do we want to change or let go of? What does life look like moving forward? The new year, this new year in particular, is a good time to focus on such things. And the stories in our January/February 2021 issue might help you gain some new perspectives. There’s Michelle Ellison, on our cover, who is inspiring residents to reconsider where their energy

comes from, and join her in relying exclusively on renewable sources through the Clean Power Alliance. Conceptual artist Bob Privitt (Profile) looks beyond the objects he uses in his work to understand their origins, meanings, symbolism and implications — read about “Coach Bob,” and you may never look at a cheese grater the same way again. Ojai’s Meditation Mount (About Town), with its meandering paths and beautiful natural setting, has for decades been a place of quiet contemplation and deep reflection. Spend some time there with your Big Questions, and you just might find some answers. As these pandemic days seem to keep dragging on, it would be nice to think that 2021 is a fresh start and a new beginning. Well….it’s probably going to be more of the same for quite some time. On the bright side — the widespread distribution of the vaccine is in sight, even if it is in the distance, and that means we’re in the home stretch. The days of “regular” living aren’t here just yet. But if we stay the course — wearing our masks, washing our hands, social distancing — we’ll get there.

SACRED SPACE Meditation Mount is a place of profound connection, reflection and peace.

erched atop a mountain promontory on the eastern edge of the Ojai Valley, commanding nearly unbelievable views, Meditation Mount welcomes people of all faiths seeking peace, personal growth and healing. Since its founding in 1971, Meditation Mount has served as a nonprofit Meditation Center of Planetary Service, based on ideas such as compassion, peace and goodwill.

me) who appreciate its unique vibrations and connection to nature. But the last few years have posed daunting challenges. The December 2017 Thomas Fire destroyed landscaping, parts of the infrastructure and a caretaker residence called Tree House. The fire burned more than half the plants lining the International Garden of Peace, one of Meditation Mount’s highlights, leading to inspiring vistas across the Ojai Valley and surrounding mountains. After extensive renewal efforts, Meditation Mount reopened in early 2020, just before the coronavirus pandemic forced a second closure. Visitation to the grounds is available once again with coronavirus precautions in place and timed reservations, although buildings remain closed until people can safely gather inside together.

DEEPER CONNECTIONS Meditation Mount became part of my life in the 1980s, when my mother made holiday visits a family tradition. We enjoyed a festive Christmas or Easter meal at the Ojai Valley Inn, followed by quiet and reflective family time on Meditation Mount. I still have fond childhood memories of sitting silently in a Tibetan-inspired meditation room, and walking through the tranquil garden to what felt like the edge of PATHWAY TO PEACE: Meandering trails, gateway pagodas, natural vegetation and the great expanse of sky all around the world. make Meditation Mount an extraordinary location for deep reflection and communion with nature. with deep meaning to me. During the long restoration process following the fire, I sometimes felt sad when visiting Ojai for a hike and it suddenly dawned on me that I couldn’t stop by. Therefore I was happy to recently visit for the first time since the fire, and experienced the recovery and reconstruction first hand. I toured the landscape with Board President Michael Lindfield, who explained the mount’s mission to promote an enlightened and compassionate world through creative meditation, and build the foundation for a new civilization. He said the type of meditation the organization promotes helps people deepen their connection with life in their own personal ways including art, religion, music, philosophy or other endeavors. “What we do is use creative meditation as a process of spiritual architecture, of creating a preferred future through our thoughts, our collective imagination. And then we take that, like a blueprint, and we condense these into seed thoughts,” said Lindfield. “And these we broadcast into the ethers. That’s how you take the seeds of the future and bring them into the present.”

S AC R E D S PAC E Lindfield showed me newly restored paths surrounding the property, offering 360 degree views, including the scenic red and white stripes of the majestic Topa Topa Mountains looming overhead. He said the magic of Meditation Mount emanates from the combination of the majestic setting, combined with the thoughts and feelings of visitors. “It does have a particular energetic field to it. There is an energy charge here that is very fiery, very powerful. And because for the past 50 years we’ve been intentionally meditating and anchoring the work here, that has also charged the ethers, charged the ground, charged everything,” said Lindfield. “It is a sacred space, a place of deep stillness, where people can come

and deepen their relationship with their own self, with life.” Lindfield told me about the philosophy behind the message he and others involved with the mount hope people take from their 8

Photo by Brian Ziegler experience there. “We have three principals of essential divinity which honors all life being sacred. And each person, and being, has inside of them a

spark of the creator. However you want to name the creator,” said Lindfield. “The second principal is goodwill, which is love in action. It means that love is the lifeblood and currency of all relationships,” he continued. “The third principal is unanimity. And that affirms that there is this one web of life. That we are interdependent, inseparable, and that separation is a temporary illusion.” Meditation Mount is also a place of healing for many who travel here in times of stress, despair and even terminal illness. Lindfield says it helps them put their lives in perspective. “Our job is to create a space where people can have a lived experience of their own divinity. And understand their own connectedness with nature,” said Lindfield. “It’s a place of healing because all of you can be present. This place welcomes the whole of you. And healing is a state of wholeness.” I also met Operations Manager Karina Arcia, who shared her own story of healing after serving in the military around 2007. “With my own personal journey, I have PTSD from deploying to Iraq. I spent a good two years in my own home, paranoid, not really able to come into contact with people,” said Arcia. She took mindful meditation classes through Veterans Affairs, which led to volunteering at Meditation Mount to help her slowly integrate back into society. “I wasn’t trying to hide that I had PTSD. I was open about it,” said Arcia. “So that was very important to me, that the space offered peace and healing and safety.” She’s served as operations manager since 2019, and greeting people who visit is among her responsibilities. Another part of her

healing process involved learning to play Tibetan singing bowls. She’s performed outdoor meditative sonic experiences to promote healing and spiritual growth. “I play with the intention to hold a space. For peace, or love, or whatever that person needs to go within themselves and find that within them. So I hold the intention energetically for peace and love to emerge. Whatever happens with the person, I trust that it’s divinely guided,” said Arcia. When the Thomas Fire broke out I was working as a radio news reporter and watched in horror as it consumed homes in my own Ventura neighborhood and elsewhere. It made me sad to hear that the fire also tore across Meditation Mount, and I initially feared the worst. Later on I was somewhat relieved to hear that unique Tibetan-style structures used for meditation were only slightly damaged. Two stewards heroically deployed a 100-foot-long fire hose to battle the flames, which ended up charring 28 of the property’s 32 acres. When I drove up the long, winding driveway for the first time since the fire on my recent visit, I was happy to feel the same magic I remembered.

I N H A R M O N Y W I T H N AT U R E Some charred benches were left in place as a reminder of nature’s power, but it was also amazing to see plants and wildlife thriving once again. Executive Director Brian Ziegler told me that cleaning up the fire damage was a massive job. They received help from a grant-funded program providing jobs for people who have been unemployed for extended periods of time, including many who were only recently released from prison. They helped haul away burned vegetation and build new pathways around the property. Ziegler was grateful for the help, and said the workers also felt the sacred and peaceful nature of Meditation Mount. “What was particularly

touching for me was that some of these people had spent half of their life in prison, opened up, and they said, ‘This is the first time I’ve felt safe in my life,’ ” said Ziegler. He added that the fire “THIS PLACE WELCOMES THE WHOLE OF YOU,” says reinforced lessons about the Board President Michael Lindfield. Photo by Alex Wilson interdependence of people and the environment. “To work in harmony with nature is profound. Nature has its own cycles. The wildfire is part of nature’s cycle,” said Ziegler. A commitment was made to restore the International Garden of Peace to make it better connected to the surrounding environment. They followed a Japanese philosophy called shakkei, which means borrowed scenery, to enhance sight-lines of the surrounding mountains. Regularly scheduled events at Meditation Mount include a Full Moon Meditation each month — shared on Zoom and social media until people can be inside safely again. The grounds have also been reopened for self-guided meditation on a timed, reservation basis, with a $10 donation. More information on how to visit, plus videos and spiritual teachings, are available on the website. It also provides opportunities to financially support Meditation Mount, which is funded through donations. Those of us who love Meditation Mount are looking forward to the full restoration of programs and the positive forces unleashed by meditation in a group setting. After moving through the difficulties of recent years, Lindfield said he and others are looking forward to a brighter future and the work ahead to promote peace, service and personal spiritual growth. “Meditation Mount is a place where you can deepen your relationship with your own essential nature, and be inspired to be a force for good in the world,” said Lindfield. v

Renewable energy advocate Michelle Ellison joins the battle against climate change with the Clean Power Alliance.

A

COVER STORY

ALL CHARGED UP PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

bout five years ago, Michelle Ellison, a young mother living with her family in bucolic Ojai, experienced what she calls “a climate awakening.” This was not a joyous, uplifting experience. A story she encountered about the existential threat of climate change turned into a staredown with an apocalypse. Looking into the void of ecological breakdown, she realized that all that mattered to her — the love of her family, the beauty and wonder of the natural world, her hopes for a bright future — stood in grave peril. All this came a year before the Thomas Fire surrounded Ojai with flame in late 2017, further spurring her into action. “My wake-up moment came when I had a two-year-old and a threemonth-old at home,” she says now, looking back. “The severity of the climate crisis knocked me down. I wasn’t expecting it: I had never felt this amount of despair in my entire life. I felt like I was on the Titanic and everyone was out dancing on the deck having a merry old time. But once I caught a glimpse of the iceberg I could no longer return to blissful ignorance.”

“O N E P E R S O N AT A T I M E I S N OT E N O U G H ” For about a week after “the awakening” she felt paralyzed by disillusionment and despair. “I had assumed that there were higher-ups, people who were taking care of these issues, and then when I realized that no, the crisis is not getting taken care of, I thought, ‘okay, I have to do something,’” she says now, looking back. “We don’t know if we have passed the tipping points [to runaway global warming], but if we don’t act certainly it will be too late. We have to mobilize and act as if our lives depend on it.” Ellison had worked diligently with her husband, Andrew, to reduce their personal carbon footprint, by installing solar panels on their home, driving an electric car and exchanging gas appliances and heating for electric appliances. But from her research into climate change, Ellison

knows that individual efforts cannot possibly bring down dangerously high levels of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. “It is important that individuals take action; it’s not to say that we should do nothing. But the scale and speed of the climate crisis necessitates policy-level change,” she declares. “We need systemic change, at all levels of government. One person at a time is not enough.” Ellison dived into local environmental activism, and in 2017 learned about a recently-created community choice energy organization called Clean Power Alliance (CPA). This not-for-profit public agency, originally formed in Los Angeles County in 2017 and backed by a $10 million loan from the county government, sources renewable energy primarily from wind and solar operations in Southern California. Using a legal infrastructure created in the wake of the state’s 2002 energy crisis, intended to empower in-state energy markets, CPA offers three different levels of renewable energy to businesses and homeowners in 32 member cities and counties in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Ellison made many allies along the way. Before asking the Ojai City Council to approve joining Clean Power Alliance, Ellison and fellow advocates met with members of the city council to go over the opportunity, field questions and clarify details. Then-Mayor Johnny Johnston, a former Ojai city manager and chief administrative officer of the county, put his budgeting expertise to work analyzing the option to join. Today he speaks highly of Ellison and CPA’s ability to bring renewable energy to Ventura County. “CPA is definitely on the up-and-up as an organization,” Johnston says. “It was created by Los Angeles County to advance power aggregation and actually influence the market by buying clean energy and making it available to customers at competitive rates.” Cities and counties can choose a percentage for a default level of renewable energy from CPA for their communities, in which customers are enrolled but still retain the choice to select a different tier of renewable energy and so a different rate. Ellison launched a grassroots “green by default” campaign for 100% renewable energy, going city to city, making the case to elected officials and engaging local community members. The 100% Green Power product costs 7-9% more than SCE’s base rate, which is just 34% renewable. Qualified low-income customers receive the plan benefit at no bill premium. When CPA launched in 2019, there were 10 communities (five of which are in Ventura County) on 100% Green Power. Today, that number has grown to 14, and more are considering making the switch to emission-free electricity. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people have transitioned to clean energy, virtually overnight.

P ROT E C T I N G O U R C H I L D R E N ’S F U T U R E

It’s been a huge amount of work for Ellison. “I’m not doing this because I inherently want to be spending all my time appearing before city councils, staying up until midnight or 2 or 4 a.m., working on messaging, building a website — which

18

|

| JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2021

I’ve never done before — and getting up early in the morning to hammer away at these things,” says Ellison, a hint of frustration in her voice. “I’m doing this because it’s so important that local governments act with urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez, who served on Oxnard’s City Council when Ellison and cohorts brought forward the 100% renewable energy proposal to the city in 2018, admires Ellison’s work. “Michelle is a great advocate, but she didn’t really have to persuade the Oxnard City Council too much as the majority of us supported the 100%,” says Ramirez. “Michelle’s strongest point comes when she asks officials to think about the future of your city, the air you breathe, and to think about your children and your grandchildren and their future. As a mother she never hesitates to talk about the future for our children. This resonates.” To officials at Clean Power Alliance, Ellison’s advocacy has been a boon for their 100% renewable business. “When CPA told cities that they could choose renewable energy, Michelle was one of the first people to recognize that this was an opportunity to put what we know from the academic literature into practice,” Ted Bardacke, the executive director of CPA, says. “She combines that knowledge with an activist mentality that urges local officials to take risks in their leadership position.” Bardacke points out that CPA now has about a million accounts, and serves about three million people with renewable energy, meaning more 8

of its customers utilize fully renewable energy than any other utility in the country. Ellison estimates that about 500,000 residents of Ventura County are getting 100% renewable energy through CPA. “It was amazing for us to see check-in on a Tuesday night in 2018 and see three out of four city councils in Ventura County voting to opt-in with 100% renewable energy,” says Bardacke, executive director of CPA. “As the person responsible for making this all work, it was also a bit terrifying to me. I believed in and supported what the local officials were doing, but none of us knew how the customers would react. It’s already a risky business, but it turned out my fears were unfounded. Michelle encouraged people to take a risk. And she made it understandable and okay to see that it was an acceptable risk. It turned out that she was right.”

“G R E E N BY D E FA U LT ” Part of Ellison’s confidence in fact comes from her research into the concept of governments “nudging” people to make good choices for the sake of all, an idea pioneered by law professor and former Obama Administration official Cass Sunstein, who has published extensively on the “architecture of choice.” Sunstein recently wrote about this concept of “green by default” for Bloomberg, specifically highlighting the impact in CPA cities, and citing that, “In municipalities in California, hundreds of thousands of people

are now receiving 100% renewable energy, and that means dramatic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.” Sunstein’s point about emissions was echoed by John Capoccia, former mayor of Sierra Madre, who with his city council approved a move to 100% renewable energy through CPA in 2019. He was initially skeptical of the idea of the “green by default,” fearing customers would not understand, but after researching the CPA concept and seeing Ellison advocate at a meeting he became convinced. “There is just nothing else that any one person can do that could have such a tremendous impact of removing thousands of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere,” he says. He adds that after CPA and the city — as contracted — sent out mailers to all customers explaining the change and offering the opportunity to opt out of 100% renewable energy, very few have. “There was a lot of chatter on Facebook, but I got zero calls or emails,” he says. “I asked the city manager about it, and he says that we haven’t gotten a single call of complaint after we explained how easy it is to opt out if you wish. I’ve become a big advocate myself. The science of climate change is there — we just have to do something about it.” For Ellison’s climate efforts, she was named in December 2020 “Activist of the Year” by the Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club. Katie Davis, the group chair of the chapter, sees Ellison as inspirational, both in her work and in her personal life. “So many of us talk and worry about the climate and ask: What can one individual do? Michelle illustrates what we can do if we just act — even a busy individual with young kids! My own activism dates back to when I had little kids,” Davis says. “As a parent of young children, you are used to multi-tasking, to getting things done quickly and effectively. It’s a secret super-power, and as a parent, you really do see what is at stake.” Ellison admits to being pleasantly surprised at her own effectiveness. “It’s surprising in some ways — I don’t have any special titles or authority. I just recognized an opportunity to dramatically reduce emissions for entire communities. I think of the friendships and bonds that have been made in this struggle, working for a common purpose. And the work itself has made me feel more hopeful. I feel I’m part of the progress that is happening. It’s reassuring that solutions are available and to see an increasing willingness to take action to deal with climate change.” v

CREATIVE CONUNDRUM Questioning material and meaning with artist Bob Privitt.

B

BY EMILY DODI

PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

ob Privitt is called many things: artist, mentor, local treasure, Coach Bob. Privitt’s collages, assemblages and sculptures have been featured in venues throughout Ventura County. He is Professor Emeritus at Pepperdine University, where his decades-long career included being a fine arts teacher, an artist in residence and director of the school’s art gallery. Pepperdine is also where he earned the nickname “Coach Bob”: He found that if his students called him coach instead of Professor Privitt, they were more likely to ask questions and be engaged. He has been lauded for his involvement in the local arts community and for being a strong supporter of fellow artists. Ask Privitt to describe himself, however, and his answer may surprise you. “I like to think of myself as an artist, but probably I’m only kind of a journeyman journalist interested in who, what, where, when and why. I spend a great deal of time [thinking], what is this object? Why is this object? What does it mean? Why is it here? So, I get all entangled in the cultural, social, symbolic meaning of things … I’m interested in the juxtaposition of disparate elements to create new meaning.” Privitt doesn’t like to do the same thing over and over again. He admits to having a short attention span and an aversion to “churning out multiple artworks that look alike. If it doesn’t have meaning for me, I am not interested in doing it.” His voice has a hint of a drawl. His cadence is slow and easy. His thoughts are deep, and even though he claims that there’s a healthy dose of “Scotch-Irish malarkey” in what he says, one suspects that everything he says about art and what it means to him is the gospel truth. “I believe that everything has meaning. If you are a reasonably intelligent and a reasonably well-educated person, I think you have the duty8

sparks his imagination — from cheese graters, copper wire and glass bottles to asbestos covers, a croquet ball, even bird bones. “I think about all of the symbolic meanings of all of these things,” he says, then shrugs with a laugh, “I’m giving you a bucket of philosophy.” Privitt’s favorite place to find materials is the thrift store. “I find this thing and that thing, and I’ll put it together and create something. The objects are the first step.” For instance, secondhand wooden letter trays and serving trays are the source of his “Messages Sent/Messages Received” series. “The starting point for each sculpture uses either a wooden letter tray (a device/vehicle for communication) or a wooden serving tray (a device/vehicle for providing sustenance),” Privitt writes Continued on page 24

and the desire to find out [what it is]. … Artists talk about being in the zone and being in the flow of things and to a certain extent that’s true,” Privitt says, but then he adds that he doesn’t quite work that way. “I think that God gave us a brain; why don’t we use it every now and then?” So, whatever the object, his jumping off point is the same. It begins with the question: What does this mean? Imagine holding a seed in your hand. “You ask yourself what does the seed mean? Then you start thinking about the seed as a symbol for regeneration and new life. Or a quail egg that you got; it could potentially be a bird that could fly. You start getting involved in the thought process. What something is and how it goes through its lifetime and then finally ends up being what it is to me. That’s what happens whenever I create.” A prolific artist, Privitt works with anything that catches his eye and

in the commentary about the piece. When he spotted the trays, with their “beautiful wooden dovetail joints,” Privitt says that it got him thinking about “the symbolism and the history and the cultural aspect of that particular shape. That’s my foundation. I start with that and then whatever can fit inside, sometimes slightly outside, the tray becomes either the message sent or the message received.” “Looking Back, Looking In,” another piece in the letter tray series, features a person’s profile in aluminum, looking backwards, and a cribbage game board that “points to aspects of rhythm, the randomness of chance …” The viewer is able to see their reflection in

the aluminum face. “The very concept of seeing your own reflection,” Privitt marvels at the thought before paraphrasing a Bible verse. “Something about when we look in a mirror, we see imperfectly but later we will see clearly.” Whatever the piece, large or small, assemblage, collage or sculpture, Privitt’s process is rooted in his training as an ironworker. (He still holds his union book from Local 775 in El Paso, Texas.) When he goes into his studio, Privitt explains, “I’ve already thought about what I’m going to do and, because I have enough technical and engineering skills from my experiences as an ironworker, I don’t have to worry about what’s going to happen or how to make it work right. … I already sat down and thought about it long ago … the artwork is already formed in my mind and then it’s just a matter of completing it.” However, it doesn’t always go according to plan. “Occasionally, there’ll be a case where I mess up on my sequence.” When that happens, Privitt says, it’s time to “fall back 40 yards and punt because now it’s starting in a new direction. That doesn’t happen very often, though.” One of his most wellknown pieces is a large metal sculpture, “Captured Semisphere,” currently on view at the Museum of Ventura County. Today, however, Privitt creates mostly smallscale collages and assemblages. “I do miss working on

the large sculptures,” he says, but the work involved is just too strenuous. Many of the individual pieces that went into his sculptures are massive, like farm machinery parts and the like. “I can’t haul that stuff around the way I used to … When I was younger and stronger and healthier, I could literally pick up the different parts and set them down. I’m 82 years old, what am I doing messing with that? … So, I started doing smaller things.” Whether it’s a towering sculpture or an assemblage held in a cigar box, the spirit in which Privitt creates them is the same. “I like contradictions and conflicts. Contrasted things that [make you ask], wait a minute, what’s going on here? There seems to be a dynamic tension going on. I’ve often been asked, ‘Coach Bob, why did you do that?’ Because it amused me. What other reason need there be? I am interested in creating something that has not existed before, and that’s hard to do.” Maybe so, but Coach Bob makes it look easy.
