A PERFECT FIT
y and large, Southern California is known for its laid-back approach to fashion. Despite the glamour of the Hollywood red carpets and the many luxury brands found along Rodeo Drive, the usual style is easy and uncomplicated. This is particularly true of Ventura County — and no one embodies our breezy Central Coast vibe better than Amara Bessa. Bessa is the owner of the clothing boutique Kariella, for which she serves as both artist and muse. Her store selections reflect her own aesthetic: comfortable, relaxed, a little vintage and boho — yet still smartly styled with quality pieces that strike a beautiful balance between trendy and timeless. And while she does carry name brands, she’s begun stocking her own designs, including funky-cool t-shirts with colorful, retro graphics that pay homage to Ojai and Ventura, the cities where her shops reside. For an issue devoted to style and all things made in Ventura County, you couldn’t ask for a better fit. Bessa shares her personal story and approach to fashion in a candid and inspiring interview. The other local makers we feature this month may not be immersed in the world of fashion, but are they also bringing style and finesse to their work? Yes, indeed. Classic Letterpress in Meiners Oaks has made an imprint (pardon the pun) on Ventura County

in a big way. The shop’s two-ton Heidelberg press prints stationery, art books, business cards and more of exceptional quality and beauty. The man behind the machine is Norman Clayton, a graphic designer, typographer and master printer, who lends a touch of artisanal craftsmanship all too rare in a world full of mass production. For Bessa and Clayton, their work is something of a calling. For Marlow and Janis Barger, their entry into winemaking was very much a Plan B. The wine enthusiasts were seeking an active retirement, and after significant research, jumped into the grape barrel with both feet by opening up the aptly named Plan B Wine Cellars in Ventura. Now a thriving boutique winery with a loyal clientele, the Bargers have found that life on the vine continues to be a journey of discovery — one they imbibe with gusto. Like many entrepreneurs, these individuals share a passion for their chosen professions, and a commitment to excellence. That devotion can be felt in the products they produce, making the stuff of ordinary life — the clothes we wear, the paper on which we write, the wine in our glass — extraordinary objects to be enjoyed and cherished. At Ventana Monthly, we’re all about that which can be enjoyed and cherished right here in Ventura County. Like I said . . . the perfect fit. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

GOING
WITH THE FLOW A LEAP OF FAITH AND JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY LEAD TO PLAN B. BY EMILY DODI

hen most people think about retirement they think of taking things a little easier. They look forward to honing the old golf swing or taking a dream vacation. Not Marlow and Janis Barger, the owners and winemakers of Plan B Wine Cellars in Ventura. Self-professed “wine geeks,” the Bargers “came to be winery owners and winemakers by going a little overboard in [the] quest for enjoyable wine tasting experiences.” But how do you go from being wine lovers to becoming actual wine makers who run a successful winery with a steadily expanding and loyal clientele? The world is not short on people who fantasize about owning a winery someday. What gave Marlow and Janis the gumption to actually do it? The world may have what Marlow calls “a persistent knock on the door of opportunity” to thank for persuading the Bargers to take that leap of faith, and it wasn’t all blue-skying. “After our initial and somewhat euphoric decision to start our own winery, we realized we needed some reality,” Marlow recalls. “We worked on a business plan, researched startup costs and, in spite of the obvious pitfalls, decided to go ahead.” Plus, there was a definite upside. “Rather than a typical retirement, ours would keep us challenged, socially engaged and physically active.” Initially, the thought of being on the serving side of the wine bar was a bit daunting. “The thing I dreaded most was having to talk to people. I never would have thought of Continued on page 12

myself as a social person,” admits Marlow. This comes as a surprise, considering how easy he is to talk to. Marlow was relieved to discover that, “if everybody loves wine, it’s pretty easy to talk about it.” Any reservations the Bargers may have had were no match for their desire to turn their passion into something bigger. “Being a home winemaker never appealed to me,” Barger says. “It was more about the journey of discovery, where the more you learn about wine the more interesting it got.” When it was time to make their dream a reality, the Bargers started looking for the perfect space. They searched for months. They were about to sign a lease on a spot in Camarillo when Marlow found a listing for a space on an industrial cul de sac in Ventura, next to a place that sells granite and stone slabs. It didn’t exactly scream “winery,” but they went to check it out. Janis remembers the day they first went to see it. “He PLAN B emphasizes quality over quantity, and makes no more than 1,500 cases pulls in here and I go, ‘OK, where are we?’ Marlow says, of wine every year. ‘Let’s just go look at it.’” As Janis recalls, the space was filled with old cars and slabs of granite. But then the owner or December (depending on the weather) the Bargers host Second opened the large doors and that’s when things really clicked for the Sunday Suppers. The popular event features live music and local Bargers. “You could see the ocean shimmering and the Channel food trucks. The doors are opened wide, the breeze rolls in and Islands in the distance,” Janis remembers. “When we left, we were people kick back — or kick up their heels and dance. The band afraid to ask each other what we thought. But then Marlow asked Shaky Feelin’ launches the 2020 lineup on March 8. me, ‘What do you think?’ ‘I love it,’ I said. ‘Me too!,’ he said. “It’s called the B List,” says Janis. Unlike a wine club, the B List doesn’t start over every year. It’s cumulative. After the purchase of 100 bottles, Plan B customers can become part of the B100 Club. Members get free wine tastings and a 20 percent discount on purchases. There are other perks, too, including being able to reserve tables. B100 members also get the occasional impromptu treat. “Sometimes Marlow will get a wine out that we haven’t tasted in a while and we’ll ask their opinion.” “We have some fiercely loyal people,” says Marlow, who adds that locals are their lifeblood. While other wineries produce many thousands of cases a year, Plan B has topped at 1,500 cases in a single year. Their goal is not quantity, but quality. “Our goal is to be the best wine in Ventura,” says Janis. (Marlow adds, in a whisper,“to be the best wine in the world.”) Plan B wines already hold a rare distinction: They are sold ready to drink. “Our wines take so much time getting from harvest to bottle,” Marlow explains. “They’re usually four or five years old before we get them in the tasting room. A lot of them are three years in the barrel and then a year or two in the bottle. A frequent compliment we get
is that our wines are ready to drink. They’re smooth and aged well. Customers have come in and said, ‘Wow, this is the oldest wine we’ve had all week.’” The years-long process of harvest to bottle begins with sourcing the grapes. The Bargers use grapes exclusively from the Central Coast, primarily from Santa Barbara. Perhaps even more important than where they get the fruit is when. “The single most important decision you make every year as a winemaker is the pick date because that drives so many other things.” Once the date is selected, the grapes are picked and sent to be de-stemmed. Then the fruit is immediately brought to Plan B, where all the fermentation, pressing, barreling and bottling is done right on the premises. “Every winemaker has their own style and their own ways of finessing the grapes and the flavors. Marlow has his ways to bring them out,” says Janis. “He knows when to do this and when not to do that. He’s a great winemaker.” Modest to a fault, Marlow recalls a time when someone at the Ojai Wine Festival asked him, “What’s the best wine you make?” His response? “I haven’t made it yet.” That pursuit of excellence keeps the Bargers curious and inspired by the art of winemaking. It has resulted in such popular wines as their 2013 Valley View syrah, the 2014 grenache and the 2014 The Stoneyard “Classic GSM,” among others. Marlow has also created the well-received blends “Dark Secret” (73 percent cab and 27 percent Valley View syrah) and “Dark Attraction” (67 percent zinfandel and 33 percent petite sirah), and this year Plan B has introduced its first port. “It’s easy to get into a rut and to be safe, but I read about a famous wine guy who said that you’ll never make great wine by being cautious. You have to experiment and try new things.” Sitting at the bar, listening to the Bargers tell their story and talk about wine, it’s easy to see that their leap of faith has paid off. “This is what we wanted,” Janis says. Looking toward the future, she adds with a smile, ‘We just go with the flow.” Just what you would expect winemakers to do.

He shoots most of his photos from the pilot’s seat when the aircraft is in its cruising level and autopilot is activated, or when he is in the additional seat behind the other two pilots in the aircraft. “Everyone holding a camera sees different things in his lens frame,” says the imaginative pilot, but it’s principally the “shapes and patterns” that mostly appeal to him. His wonderful images, currently on Instagram (@tomerz9), illustrate his special relationship with a reality generally hidden from ordinary view: images of sunset and sunrise, storms and streaks of lightning, birds in magical flight, objects on the ground transformed into abstract art forms — all memorable moments in time. And then there are the colors: “I am fascinated by colors,” he says. “The combination of colors fascinates me.” Illustrating this point, he refers to one of his photographs of a sunrise, in which two contrasting bands of yellow and orange, simply titled “Good Morning,” are astonishing for what they reveal about nature’s magic. “To get such a photo,” Tomer says, “you just need to be lucky and patient . . . because you can sit for many, many hours and days and you won’t catch such a thing. It’s a matter of the exact moment you push the camera and the exact angle . . . If two people would have been there with the same camera, at the same place and time, the same second…I’m not so sure they could have achieved the same photo.” The pilot then delves into the technicalities of photographing a sunrise or a sunset. “You know,” he says, “when PILOT Tomer Zadok in the cockpit. you photograph a sunrise, it’s much more difficult because it Continued on page 16

Thus, it takes more time to photograph a sunset — sometimes as much as 10-20 minutes — “until the sun can get below the horizon and vanish.” On the subject of color, Tomer has photographed what he terms “an amazing photo of the aurora.” “It’s very rare to see even when we fly,” he says. “We see it from time to time.” But what usually shows up is an almost unnoticeable green color. Sometimes, however, you get lucky and “you get an amazing full green sky.” Then there are the storm clouds, unseen from the ground, which can resemble “an atomic bomb.” When Tomer reflects on helicopter flying, one begins to understand, in his words, that it is a “totally different experience . . . because you fly very low, very near to the ground . . . it’s like walking on foot on the earth.” From a helicopter, the view is very special: “The colors, the flowers, the animals . . . it’s a totally different experience . . . It’s the most beautiful kind of flying.” Tomer describes his helicopter outings with friends as “private flying” and a “social hobby,” and among his helicopter images are lovely views of

When he first started shooting photos, Tomer used a small pocket camera and sometimes even a simple cell phone before the advent of smart phones. Today, he uses a Canon SLR camera, which is useful for producing high-resolution enlargements. The veteran pilot, who earned an MBA degree after his air force service and worked successfully in corporate marketing before joining El Al in 2005, is “always in a kind of search for patterns, for shapes and colors, which makes some of the pictures kind of abstract.” 8
One of his favorite photos, dating from his earliest days of cockpit photography, is a low-resolution image of Dijon mustard fields in France — a lovely abstract view he captured with a cell phone camera. Tomer has also participated in art exhibitions in Israel and Europe, given the fact that many of his abstract photographs, like the Dijon mustard fields, resemble actual paintings. He is also looking forward to “new adventures and opportunities” for exhibitions, just as any other artist who is interested in sharing his work.
One of the areas the pilot enjoys photographing is the coast of Long Island, New York. “It is very, very interesting and full of nature,” he says. Usually, El Al’s day flight approaches New York around three in the afternoon, and with the sunset in front of the aircraft, “this makes a colorful and beautiful photo.” Here and there among his photographs are reminders that his point of reference is the cockpit of an airplane, where he can share his view above and among the clouds. But no matter the subject or the vehicle (be it Dreamliner or a helicopter) Tomer Zadok’s photography reflects a deep appreciation for the world around him as he shares “the beauty of flight, which only a pilot’s eyes can see.”
FACING PAGE, TOP: The exact moment lightning explodes. FACING PAGE, BELOW: The mustard fields of Dijon, France. ABOVE: Eastern Himalayas. TOP RIGHT: Aurora borealis, seen from inside the cockpit. RIGHT: The sun penetrating the clouds over Chengdu, China. “It looks like Genesis to me,” Zadok says.

FINE PRINT CLASSIC LETTERPRESS INVOKES THE SPIRIT OF ARTS AND LETTERS.
T
BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
he Hopi carve and paint Kachina dolls that are given to children to learn the spiritual and religious significance attached to them. Any sensitive person who has encountered these emblems can sense the spirit and magic that these totems possess. One doesn’t usually associate a hulking piece of industrial equipment as possessing such a magical energy, but behind the ink-stained door to Norman Clayton’s studio in Meiners Oaks, a massive Heidelberg press, taking up a good portion of the space, has a whole lotta soul and presence, just like the man who operates it. Weighing in at two tons, the press, built in the 1970s, was once owned by San Francisco-based letterpress printer, book designer, teacher, author and MacArthur Fellow Adrian Wilson. Wilson passed the machine down to Jim Wehlage, Clayton’s mentor, who in turn passed it to Clayton when he purchased Wehlage’s letterpress printing business, Classic Letterpress, in 2006. Like a musician and their piano or a sculptor and their stone, Clayton’s Heidelberg press is the instrument he composes on. For techies reading this, his workshop equipment includes a 18x23 KSBAZ Heidelberg Cylinder, 10x15 Heidelberg Platen (Windmill), Vandercook SP-15, photopolymer plate maker, paper cutter and foundry type. That being said, it’s the hand of the man that runs the press that imbues it with its special synthesis of art and artistry. Clayton himself pays homage to the press’ history through a broadsheet he produced which includes a quote by Wilson: “The human hand is dominant . . . these men must be willing to experiment with the materials, to work in the medium. This direct connection between the mind and the hand, craftsmanship, makes the difference between the printing which has vitality and that which is mechanical.” The designer/printer incorporates modern day letterpress technology in his work. Clayton designs on his computer. The typography and imagery is output to a film negative that is used to make a photopolymer plate that is adhered to a base for printing. His results are definitely soulful. Customers have ranged from Silicon Valley giants to UCLA, retail stores, wineries and restaurants to the Ojai Valley Museum. Clients include poets and prose writers wanting to commemorate a life in poetry and imagery. Others might desire printing for an event, like a wedding or landmark birthday, with beautiful, often handmade paper embedded with thoughtful type and design. Despite the many modern conveniences available to us, people craving the tangible and traditional beat a path to Clayton’s door. The jazz-loving Nashville native moved to the area 10 years ago from Northern California with his lovely wife, Chayo, and children Siena and Diego. (Siena prints her own line of greeting cards in her father’s workshop.) One need only spend a little bit of time with Clayton to recognize not only his passion and dedication, but an almost religious devotion to his “instrument.” 8

There seems to be a renewed appreciation for fine printing by dedicated and talented printers like Clayton. I’ve noticed more upscale businesses — from winemakers to shopkeepers to artisans — using letterpress business cards. A talented graphic designer as well as a master printer, Clayton has helped craft letterpress business cards, stationery and envelopes on beautiful paper for clients. He was responsible for the charming stationery and gift cards for the Ojai Ranch House restaurant, which incorporate whimsical drawings by Ojai’s beloved Beatrice Wood. Pick up a bottle of Ventura Spirits’ Pommeau, a limited edition apple apéritif, or La Paloma, distilled from California agave, to find lovely labels illustrated by Ventura artist Ryan Carr (a former intern) and printed by Classic Letterpress. But this craftsman’s true passion is digging into art books, scrolls and broadsheets that encompass poetry, verse and prose, often combined with art. The hand-bound books upon which Clayton has left his mark are masterpieces that beg to be handled with kid gloves. It’s often a collaborative process that he enjoys and welcomes. The books range in size from minuscule to massive. Miniature books for Lilliputian reading, such as the mini biography of Monseigneur Weber, are “divine.” The recently completed tome The Life and Times of Jo Mora, Iconic Artist of the American West, written by Peter Hiller and designed and printed by Clayton, is an impressive 216-page collectible that was more than two years in the making. It was bound by hand for the Book Club of
ABOVE: Classic Letterpress has a lovely selection of printer’s ornaments, used to decorate a page when typesetting by hand. Typically, however, Clayton creates designs on the computer and prints from photopolymer plates — more practical and just as impressive.
California, where Clayton serves on the board, and two versions are available through that organization. Clayton graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and established a reputation as a fine printer in the Bay Area, where he lived for 20 years before he and his family moved to Ojai a decade ago. He says he was always interested in books. “Words speak to me. I am a book artist who gives creative expression to words of wisdom,” he tells me as we tour his other workspace — a cavernous 2,000-square-foot outbuilding, which is also used for printmaking workshops open to the public. Recently launching his own imprint, Providence Press, he confesses another, more specific calling: “The aim of Providence Press is to make books as beautiful as the writing is wise.”

CLASSIC LETTERPRESS has left its print on everything from literature to business materials — including those for several local enterprises.
EAGLE EYE: Clayton painstakingly checks every product that comes off the press to maintain the high standards for which his shop is known.
This is evidenced by his first two projects for his new imprint: the beautiful scroll of the important Buddhist scripture the Heart Sutra, translated by Ojai’s Stephen Mitchell, that rolls neatly into a lovely bamboo container; and a letterpress-printed hardbound edition of Mitchell’s version of the Tao Te Ching. Like monks throughout the ages who have bent over manuscripts, Clayton feels a calling to create spiritual books or texts that blends perfectly

with his own Siddha Yoga spiritual practice. “Providence Press is the realization of a really deep dream of mine that started as a whisper, a longing, a personal desire to make beautiful books of spiritual wisdom,” Clayton admits. He didn’t discuss his dream for many years. Today, he is understandably protective of it: “Bringing it out into the world feels like having a vulnerable child.” Working in service to the world’s spiritual traditions in collaboration with people who have the same drive is Clayton’s underlying purpose. “I want to integrate my spiritual practice with my professional skill,” the master printer concluded. “I’m not the first person to want to make a blessed book! In fact, at the beginning of printing in the Western world, Johannes Gutenberg was creating his 42-line Bible, which is unparalleled in many ways still today!” NORMAN CLAYTON CLASSIC LETTERPRESS 756 South Rice Road, Ojai 510.579.0777 www.classicletterpress.biz www.providencepressojai.com

AMARA BESSA at Kariella in Ojai. All photos by Valerie Smith
A
Talking fashion and style with Kariella’s Amara Bessa BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER
Amara Bessa is helping to make Ventura County a more fashionable place, one customer at a time. The groovy stylist, designer and entrepreneur offers up an eclectic array of clothing, accessories and jewelry at her Kariella boutiques (named after her daughter) in Ventura and Ojai, all selected with an eye for quality, originality and style that rides the edge of trendy and timeless. Alongside the name brands you’ll also find some Kariella originals, such as Bessa’s graphic-andembroidery tees with a funky, retro vibe. Her goal: fashion that’s both fun and effortless, designed to make a woman feel both comfortable and beautiful. Bessa took time from her business and a recent move to speak with Ventana Monthly about her passion for fashion, the magic of merchandising and more. Tell us a little bit about yourself — where you grew up, your family, etc. I grew up in Ojai on South Padre Juan Avenue in Mieners Oaks. I am the oldest of four girls. I am a single mother of two; my son, Taylen, is 20 and my daughter, Kariella, is 13. I have always been a very ambitious person and even though I had my son at the young age of 19, I never stopped pursuing my dreams When did you first develop an interest in fashion? What designers or styles of clothing appealed to you at the time? I developed an interest in fashion at a very young age. My mom used to sew and when I was about 8 years old she taught me the basics of how to use the machine. In my free time I would sew dress-up clothes and accessories for me and my younger sister with my mom’s scrap fabrics. We also had this old vintage cash register a neighbor had given us, so on warm summer days I would hang clothes outside in the back yard from the trees and on fences and have my sister come pretend shop my store. She dreaded it, but I loved every minute of it! [Laughs.] I think I really had the entrepreneurial spirit running through my veins from a very early age. I always loved being creative, but I think my end goal always involved mak}} ing money while doing it so I could continue to buy my supplies and keep creating new things.

COVER
MY CANVAS
MY MEDIUM” When did you decide to make a career in fashion? As a young mother, my original career path was one I fell into in high school. I was a [computer-aided design] CAD drafter/graphic designer for many years for a mechanical engineering company. It was quite the opposite to what I was passionate about, but I was good at it nonetheless. I would work retail on the weekends to fulfill my longing to work in the fashion industry. My first fashion industry job was at BCBG. I actually had to audition for the position. They gave me two hours to sell a certain amount of clothing to get the job. I remember I styled two women and within an hour I had made my goal. I was only 16 at the time, so I was elated! After that day I was hooked. I knew I absolutely wanted to be in fashion and one day own my own stores and be a designer. I actually did my senior-year career paper on Donna Karan and becoming a fashion designer and I got the best grade in all three classes. I remember being embarrassed because my paper was the only one the teacher read out loud to the entire class; I was pretty shy and definitely still can be at times. According to the bio on your website, you switched from retail to visual merchandising for Donna Karan (and others). How did you make that transition? And can you tell us a little bit about what a visual merchandiser does? When I moved onto my second retail position at Donna Karan, I was given the opportunity to merchandise. At the time the store didn’t have an onsite merchandiser, only a district merchandiser, so I was chosen to work with her every month when she came to do a new floor set and that’s how I learned how to merchandise. I think I’ve been blessed enough to always have a natural eye for merchandising. I would consider it one of my strongest assets. It’s always come easy to me: I see a store as my canvas and the merchandise as my medium. It’s actually quite fun and something I always look forward to doing in my shops. It’s like being able to breathe new life into the store
every few weeks. It makes everything feel new and fresh and it really ties into styling. By making everything easy to shop for the customers, they can put together outfits with ease. As a buyer for Angel, what kinds of pieces did you look for? As most people know, Angel is a very established store, so as the buyer I had to honor the original concept of the store and its devoted customers while also bringing some fresh life into the space. Ideally for that location, I was always on the lookout for unique, inspiring dresses, high-quality yummy knits and basic and not-so-basic denim. In this particular position I learned that the foundation to any successful clothing retailer is to stock desirable go-to basics complimented by fun specialty pieces. It can’t be all one or the other.
“I THINK it’s important to offer a variety of styles and price points so there’s a little something for everyone.” Continued on page 32

BESSA in a graphic-and-embroidery tee of her own design.
At one point did you start designing your own clothes? What kinds of clothing did you make? Designing is a very recent accomplishment. I spent some time in sewing classes at Ventura College and always modified my patterns and took creative liberties with the assignments. It was fun and challenging at the same time. I was very excited to launch our new tees in December 2019; I really wanted to bring something local to the table for all the people who love Ojai and Ventura with our ’70s-inspired embroidery graphic tee collection. We have some more styles coming out this summer that will be even more embroidery driven. Are you self taught, or did you attend a particular school for design? I only took some sewing courses at Ventura College back in my early 20s.
What designers have you drawn inspiration from? And has that changed through the years? The very first designer I really fell in love with back in early 2000 was probably Marc Jacobs. I just loved his retro style. Over the years I’ve always loved Free People, I remember I bought my first piece from them back when I was 16. I’m still obsessed with their line and it’s one of the top-selling brands in my shops.

Tell us a little bit about how Kariella came about. I started Kariella back in 2010 in my garage in Bend, Oregon. I took a leap of faith and moved up there not knowing anyone, so I joined a moms’ group, as Kariella was 2 years old at the time. It was the perfect way to meet women and make new friends. At every event, the women always asked about where I got my clothes and complimented my style.
STORE manager Sophia models a Kariella tee.
Today, you operate two stores — in Ojai and Ventura. Is the aesthetic the same? And if not, why? The aesthetic is generally the same, our Ojai location just has slightly higher-end goods and some dressier styles at times. My understanding is that you stock original works of your own design as well as top brands. How do you decide on the right mix? I definitely like to mix it up. I think it’s important to offer a variety of styles and price points so there’s a little something for everyone. On occasion we’ve even had three generations find something in our boutiques, which is a big feat for such a small space. Most of the brand labels I carry I’ve had from the very beginning. They’ve been successful for me so I’ve stuck with them. I always introduce a little something new every now and again to mix it up and keep things fresh. Do you have a particular customer in mind for your designs? What kind of customer does Kariella serve? The Kariella customer believes, like us, that fashion should be both fun and effortless. She doesn’t follow the crowd, she likes to stand out in a subtle, sophisticated way, but she does it with ease. She breathes positivity. She might be a college student or a mom or even a grandma. One thing for sure is that she appreciates beautiful clothes — the touch, the feel, the silhouette, they all make her feel like a confident woman. What do you find to be the biggest challenge for you, personally, as a designer, and for fashion design in general? Always being ahead of the trends but not so far ahead that people don’t get what you’re trying to do. It can definitely be a fine line. It’s also a lot of pressure to always come up with new ideas. Fashion is fast and consumers want to see new things all the time. It can be a lot to keep up with. What are your favorite things about what you do? I love helping women feel beautiful. Styling is still one of my favorite parts of what I do. There’s no better feeling than helping a client find the perfect outfit for a special occasion. A warm smile that radiates from within because she feels like the most beautiful person in the room is why I do what I do.
They said they wished they had somewhere to shop for things like that in town. I knew in that moment that it was finally time to have my own store, so I drove to LA, bought a bunch of goods and had a shopping party in my garage when I got back. I invited all the women from the moms’ group and their friends and after a few hours I had sold almost everything I bought. A week later, I found a 400-square-foot retail space and officially started Kariella. When did you move to Ventura County, and why? I moved back in 2015 after living in Bend for seven years. I had a store location in Ventura for almost three years and wanted to be present to manage that location. I was also ready to get back to family, as everyone was living here in Ojai and Ventura.
