GOLDEN STATE

xperts predict a significant uptick in travel this summer. No surprise: After months of isolation and enforced stillness, with restrictions lifting and more people getting vaccinated, wanderlust will be rampant and many will be eager to see beyond their immediate environment. Some will, indeed, hop on a plane bound for faraway places. But recent articles in Forbes and the Washington Post both point to domestic travel as the major trend. While that will undoubtedly change as time goes by, vacationing within the state and journeying by car to closer destinations continues to be the preferred way to banish pandemic blues. I’ve waxed poetic on the many charms of Ventura Couny. I can easily do the same for the state. More than 800 miles of coastline, numerous mountain ranges and forests, unspoiled deserts, unique cities and both the highest (Mount Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the 48 contiguous states...If you’re going to be “confined” to the state where you live, California has plenty to keep you occupied!

Which is why, with safe travels in mind (and a year-plus of no one really going anywhere, which does tend to put a damper on travel article options), we’ve contented ourselves with local adventures for this month’s issue. Less romantic, perhaps, than tropical escapes, wildlife safaris, quaint villages and modern metropolises . . . but exciting and inspiring in their own rights.

EDITOR IN CHIEF Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

Camping has always been one of the best ways to get away from it all, and Chuck Graham is a master of the art. He writes about some of his favorite spots to pitch a tent in our Cover Story. Mike Nelson’s trip through San Luis Obispo County (Travel) will have you longing for the wineries, farms, beaches and one-of-a-kind delights (like the large-scale light installation, Sensorio) just a few hours up the 101. Close enough to go for the day, there are some lovely inns that will tempt with their special accommodations — why not make a holiday of it? Travel writer Leslie Westbrook decided to stick close to home for her post-vaccine sojourn. The longtime resident of Santa Barbara County discovered that this beautiful city on the Central Coast holds plenty of pleasures and surprises even for those well acquainted with the “American Riviera.” Our About Town feature just may help you see Santa Barbara in a new light . . . and invite you to discover it afresh.

Hawaii and the Caribbean, Europe and Asia, New York City and New Orleans will all still be there when we’re ready to find ourselves on distant shores once again. In the meantime, there are plenty of ways to (safely) trip the light fantastic without crossing state lines. California is a rich source for beauty, adventure and discovery, and there are plenty of wonderful experiences to be mined right here in the Golden State. – Nancy D. ABOUT TOWN

AROUND THE WORLD

IN SANTA BARBARA Day (and overnight) tripping in the American Riviera Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that risk tiers and business restrictions will be lifted June 15 if hospitalization levels are low and vaccine supply is sufficient. But Santa Barbara is still in the high-risk zone, according to the New York Times. Take precautions and dine outdoors, stay in cottages and avoid shared air circulation in public places and definitely wear your mask indoors with non-household members. If you take an Uber or taxi, be sure all windows are open and, again, mask up.

T

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

he flavors of foreign travel are easily mimicked in the city often referred to as the American Riviera. Lovely Santa Barbara that, despite flaws (including too many empty storefronts on popular State Street) still sparkles, thanks to the town’s unique geographic assets, architectural gems, and terrific restaurants. You might almost believe that you are in Mexico or Italy (plenty of great Mexican and Italian restaurants where you can practice your foreign language skills), the South of France (a drive along Alameda Padre Serra Road that ends at the Queen of the Missions), even Asia or India (if you take a restful stop to admire the heavenly views from the Vedanta Temple in the Montecito foothills). Whether you come for the day, or spend a night or three (check out www.visitsb.com for special hotel promotions that include a third free night), a myriad of activities can cure those 2020 isolation blues. Although the bucolic area is still in the “high risk”

zone, the county recently entered the Orange Tier that allows for more (hopefully safe) mingling. Belmond El Encanto’s new General Manager Janis Clapoff told me over a pleasant lunch (with stellar dining patio views of the town) that she expects things to really open up and “magically lift” on June 15. Yet before then, there’s plenty to safely enjoy. Picturesque beaches and a sparkling Pacific Ocean for fishing, sailing, whale watching (as of this writing, the Coast Guard requires ocean-faring guests to wear masks on seafaring vessels), stand-up paddle boarding and surfing lure as much as the Urban Wine Trail or wine country excursions that may remind you of distant lands that are missed. Santa Barbara’s State Street has had its ups and downs, but the experimental program of closing the street off and turning it into a walking paseo has proved successful. Re-openings with outdoor dining pods on State Street, Cabrillo Boulevard and other thoroughfares, including Coast Village Road adjacent to tony Montecito, are beginning to morph into something hopefully more permanent. Considering our weather, the city should have done this long ago in a nod to our European counterparts with their famous sidewalk dining and shopping promenades like Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, Copenhagen’s StrØget, practically all of Mexico, Las Ramblas in Barcelona and, closer to home, Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade. Continued on page 10

SEASCAPE WITH CITY LIGHTS Small yet bustling, elegant and enchanting, set between the mountains and the sea... there’s a reason Santa Barbara is considered the American Riviera. (Photo courtesy BPCM and Belmond El Encanto)

D I N I N G A L F R E S CO Restaurants that have struggled are re-welcoming guests. Wait staff are brimming with enthusiasm, like dynamic Jessica at Flor de Maiz restaurant, which features Oaxacan moles, Yucatan cochinita pibil and the wonderful south-of-the-border ingredient, huitalacoche (corn mushroom) as well as gorgeous, powerful margaritas (hibiscus, blood orange and more). “I feel like I’m on vacation!” my artist friend Beda, who lives in nearby Summerland, crooned over what may be the best lobster tacos in town. Yes, we could have been in one of Mexico’s top dining venues while swooning over desserts of churros dipped in chocolate and caramel sauces and the mouth-watering passion fruit “cornbread” (don’t let the name sway you from trying one of SB’s best desserts). My favorite casual spot for seafood with a view is Santa Barbara Shellfish at the end of Stearns Wharf for a Maine or SB spiny lobster splurge. There are less than a handful of outdoor tables for table service, but you can order from the walk-up window and eat at picnic tables on the wharf. Go on a Wednesday and watch the weekly SB Yacht Club “Wet Wednesday” sailboat races. More “upscale-casual” is Convivo. Service is stellar and food with a Mediterranean accent is first

popular for great harbor views. Fresh shucked oysters and/or Santa Barbara uni from the tiny but mighty Santa Barbara Fish Market make for a great al fresco nosh. Arts District restaurants offer a globetrotting variety: Sicilian/ southern Italian fare (Olio e Limone), northern Italian (Ca’Dario), Brazilian (Brasil Arts Café), Asian at Empty Bowl, sushi at Arigato and my current fav, Secret Bao, whose addictive bet-you-can-eatmore-than-one bao sandwiches sell for less than $5 each.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES I love cruising long, wide, palm-tree-lined Cabrillo Boulevard, which follows the Pacific Ocean and winds past the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge, Santa Barbara Zoo, Stearns Wharf, a plethora of

ocean-facing hotels, the Santa Barbara Harbor, Santa Barbara City College and Shoreline Park. Guests have been known to squeal in delight while whale watching aboard the 75’ long, eco-friendly Condor Express (condorexpress.com), a quad jet catamaran. The crew, who know a thing or two about mal de mer, suggest calling ahead to check sea conditions. Santa Barbara BCycle recently installed docks downtown for a new fleet of electric bikes and has been continuing to expand the fleet in subsequent months. Visitors may purchase passes for single, monthly or annual rides, unlock bikes from an app on their phone and return them to dock locations across the city. PeopleforBikes, an independent advocacy organization, recently ranked Santa Barbara as the fourth best bicycling city in the U.S. The Santa Barbara Zoo provides animal encounters with beasts from around the globe. A stunning snow leopard (China, Russia, Mongolia), African gorillas (don’t look them in the eye, unless you want a scare!), photo-worthy pink flamingos and graceful giraffes that can be fed (for an additional fee). Most kids I ran into gave “stinky” reviews (yes, there are malodorous parts to captive animal parks), but the zoo is wonderful and has a great outdoor playground and picnic spot for families. If you feel like getting away from the city (delightful though it may be), the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is less than five miles Continued on page 44

THE SANTA BARBARA MISSION from the A.C. Postel Memorial Rose Garden, which blooms throughout spring and summer - making this the perfect time for a visit! from Stearns Wharf. Getting there means a picturesque drive through lovely neighborhoods, past Old Mission Santa Barbara (definitely worth a stop — and don’t miss the adjacent rose garden!) and, as you climb Mission Canyon Road, majestic oaks. The garden is 78 acres of more than 1,000 taxa of California native plants, including redwoods, meadow grasses and flowers, cacti and other desert plants, and more. Afterward, find refreshment at the beautiful Belmond El Encanto resort.

OPULENT OVERNIGHT San Ysidro Ranch is rightfully crowing over their new Forbes 5-star rating (and is rated one of Travel + Leisure’s Top 500 Hotels in the World). The Ranch’s “Post Quarantine Experience” includes complimentary dining on your private patio or at award-winning Stonehouse Restaurant, which is a 2020 Wine Spectator Grand Award Winner. Complimentary cottage-side parking with electric car chargers add to the luxury and convenience. The pool is under renovation and the stellar new spa opens in the next month or so. Sommelier Tristan Pitre pops the cork for the wine cellar tour experience ($125, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs champagne and canapes). The cottages have been painstakingly recreated, and the rose garden is now in full and vibrant bloom. Belmond El Encanto’s amazing wine list, lovely grounds and stellar views would be reason enough to head to this lovely resort for a meal or cocktails with a view. Keep an eye peeled for upcoming events and special chef dinners (some in the new kitchen garden) at this historic property with tastefully decorated cottages. “Stay a Little Longer” promotion offers a 5-15% discount for stays of three nights or more. Rosewood Miramar attracts a designer-clad crowd, families and couples who enjoy the vintage-Hollywood-meets-modern-design beach resort with all the whistles and bells — from poolside service to great dining (Chef Massimo shines here). Miramar Beach is just a few steps away

from the seaside rooms; cottages all have their own HVAC systems for clean air. Owner Rick Caruso’s art collection is noteworthy, as are modern and vintage photographs in some rooms and public spaces. Bed and Breakfasts: The Upham Hotel celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Simpson House offers four barn rooms; five cottages are all self-contained, and full breakfast is included. Both offer more affordable cottage lodging. There are so many new places to explore that are popping up all the time — and NO jet lag! After a convent-like year of perpetual isolation, exploring “my town” was a treat. Go for a day, stay for a night (or a few), bring the family, some friends, a partner or just yourself, and prepare to have a ball! There’s something for everyone, and lots of it. For those who live in nearby Ventura County, Santa Barbara is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to vacay. v Leslie Westbrook is the author of the Insiders’ Guide to Santa Barbara (5th edition), a longtime Santa Barbara County resident and award-winning travel writer who loves playing in her own backyard. COVER STORY

FOUR-WHEEL ADVENTURES Remote deserts, windswept coasts, towering peaks, majestic skies . . . there’s no end to California’s car camping options.

I

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHUCK GRAHAM

t’s the mobile basecamp transporting you to hidden natural wonders, where time slows down and the only set schedule moves along on its own course. You’re just along for the ride because you chose to be there, making the drive with enough provisions to see you through on your car camping excursion. All you need is for happenstance to deliver -- but when you put yourself out there into the unknown, expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride while soaking in the many surprises at some of California’s best car camping locales, listed here from south to north. With certain re-

gions of California slower to reopen than others due to COVID-19, be sure to call ahead for availability.

A N Z A- B O R R E G O D E S E RT STAT E PA R K Being that it’s California’s largest state park at 600,000 acres, vanishing from the mainstream and into the desert isn’t that difficult. Biodiversity is where it’s at in this unique arid transition zone, where the Mojave and Colorado deserts converge and its northern fringe is fortified by the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Anza-Borrego is named after the 18th century Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza (that must’ve been a helluva slog) and Borrego, Spanish for sheep, as in the nimble desert bighorn species that thrive in the steep, craggy canyons. If the state campground isn’t your bag, there’s plenty of places along nameless Continued on page 24

W I N D W O LV E S P R E S E RV E At 93,000 acres this ecologically unique region is another transitional hotspot and is the West Coast’s largest nonprofit preserve. Imagine a mind-bogglingly diverse pocket where the Transverse and Coast Ranges converge with the San Joaquin Valley, the Eastern Sierra and western Mojave Desert. Car camping is free. Just call ahead to make a reservation and then go explore immense San Emigdio Canyon. Hike the paths along the creek up the wide-open canyon where browsing mule deer and Tule elk traverse the steep hillsides. More trails lead above the canyon in a preserve with elevation gains ranging from 600 to 6,000 feet. www.wildlandsconservancy.org

of Fish and Wildlife, the Carrizo Plain has two free campgrounds made for car camping. Nameless dirt roads are also open to car camping in the foothills of the Caliente and Temblor Ranges. Just remember that services of any kind are 50 miles in any one direction, so go over that gear list before heading out to “California’s Serengeti” for its herds of pronghorn antelope, Tule elk and blacktailed deer. If there’s one item not to forget before venturing to the Carrizo Plain, it’s a pair of binoculars. The grasslands are teeming with other wildlife, the most endangered species in the Golden 8

M O N TA Ñ A D E O RO STAT E PA R K Tucked away along the Central California Coast between Avila and Morro Bay, this rugged, idyllic stretch of coast is breathtaking to say the least. Windswept marine terraces hover above secluded, wave-battered coves. And above the coast are rolling coastal mountains with teeming riparian corridors and narrow, chaparral-choked canyons. Trails traverse and meander throughout the park. Montaña de Oro is a recreationists dream: Everything from tide pooling (some of the very best on the Central Coast) and hiking to trail

running, mountain biking and horseback riding is all within reach. Wildlife also abounds with regular sightings of southern sea otters, mule deer, coyotes, and raptors. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=592

H E A R ST S A N S I M E O N STAT E PA R K Located along Pacific Coast Highway 1 (PCH), on California’s stunning Central Coast, 35 miles north of San Luis Obispo, is a state park that offers easy access to driftwood-strewn beaches but also hikes into dense riparian areas. Five miles to the north is Hearst Castle, the lavish one-time residence of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst — certainly worth a tour. Two miles further to the north and you’ll find a marine mammal spectacle where thousands of northern elephant seals congregate on windblown beaches and beneath eroding bluffs. The Boucher Trail leads 1.5 miles to the north from there where the Piedras Blancas Light Station towers over daunting offshore pinnacles loaded with seabirds and bellowing pinnipeds. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=590

B I G S U R C OA ST When it comes to car camping along what is arguably the most scenic stretch of coastline in California, there’s lots to choose from above the sheer, wave-battered cliffs along this iconic drive. Continued on page 28

W I L D RO S E C A M P G RO U N D, D E AT H VA L L E Y N AT I O N A L PA R K When most think of Death Valley National Park, wind-groomed sand dunes and Badwater quickly come to mind. Death Valley, however, is a vast place and includes significant mountain ranges, including the Panamints. The highest summit is Telescope Peak at 11,049 feet and just adjacent to the north is Wildrose Peak at 9,064 feet. These peaks offer some amazing views, certainly a different and more grand perspective of one of the most unique national parks in North America. The campground is just down the road from these trailheads and the historic charcoal kilns. The campground is at 4,100 feet and is first come, first served. www.nps.gov/deva

A L A B A M A H I L L S , E A ST E R N S I E R R A N E VA DA M O U N TA I N S There really isn’t another car camping site quite like it in North America. I guess there’s a reason why that, over the years, the Alabama Hills have been a coveted site for movie directors. This high desert escarpment of mounting granite clusters has an even more stunning backdrop. Some of the Eastern Sierras’ tallest peaks loom to the west, including Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet.

GO SLO, AND SAFELY Y Having it all in San Luis Obispo BY MIKE NELSON

ou want recreation? You got recreation! You want relaxation? You got relaxation! You want fun day trips and unique overnighters? You got fun day trips and unique overnighters! You want wineries? You got wineries! MAN, do you got wineries! And that, in a few words, is San Luis Obispo County. From rustic campgrounds to elegant boutique hotels, from quaint main streets to beachside hangouts, from all points north to south to east to west, this coastal region halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco has long attracted countless vacationers, overnighters and day-trippers seeking fun, relaxation and, yes, wine. Even in pandemic times, SLO County has much to offer those willing to (a) plan and research in advance and (b) abide by health and safety protocols, with masking and social distancing atop the list (see sidebar). Local websites are jammed with options for dining, lodging and recreationing that could fill several guidebooks; pick a town, and you’ll find virtually anything you could want, and then some. The following options aren’t even close to a complete listing, but they do include some newer, some older and some you may never have considered, or known about — from eye-popping to soul-soothing, from mind-and-body-building to tastebud-tempting.

SOUTH COUNTY Don’t Miss: Entering SLO County from the south, it’s easy to bypass tiny Nipomo on the way to the more well-known “Five Cities,” which are 10 miles north nearer the ocean. But for a change,

MONTAÑA DE ORO State Park in Los Osos offers an endless variety of ocean views, nature hikes and scenic beauty.

TRAVEL

ENJOY … check out the Nipomo Native Garden, featuring plant communities endemic to the Nipomo Mesa and Guadalupe/Nipomo Dunes. Perched on 12 acres and 2.5 miles west of the 101 (Tefft Street exit), this botanical delight also offers pleasant walking trails through an established oak woodland and a new children’s area. The garden is open dawn to dusk daily, and restrooms are available at adjacent Nipomo Regional Park. 805.929.3589, nipomonativegarden.org. Also recommended: Arroyo Grande’s turn-of-the-century downtown (a.k.a., The Village), a short hop off the highway (Grand Avenue exit). The Village offers many unique shopping and dining options; easy access to Heritage Square Park (and summertime music) and Centennial Park (and its roaming roosters); and California’s only “swinging bridge,” situated 40 feet above Arroyo Creek. A stroll on the bridge will put you in the mood for a visit to the nearby Rooster Tavern (reverse the order at your own peril). www. visitarroyogrande.org.

CENTRAL COUNTY Don’t miss: The Olallieberry Crisp is reason enough to stop at Avila Valley Barn, just west of the 101 (Avila Beach Drive exit) as it turns north from the coast toward San Luis Obispo. This popular family fun spot offers plenty of freshly made bakery goodies, homegrown produce and locally made specialty foods, and provides plenty of possibilities for onsite or takeout picnics via the new Chicken Shack, Corn Roaster and Sweet Shop. Kids love the petting zoo, although the beloved tractor and pony rides are closed until further notice. AVB also hopes to re-open its orchards to the public for “pick your own berries and stone fruits” this summer. 805.595.2816; www.avilavalleybarn.com. Also recommended: Open seasonally (mid-summer through fall) is Gopher Glen Apple Farm, not far from AVB in See Canyon (San Luis Bay exit), and very much worth the twisting two-mile drive on a tree-lined narrow road — unless, that is, you have a problem deciding which among 65 varieties of freshly-picked apples to choose. Check the website for weekly updates on selection and availability. An assortment of fruit and vegetable-based foods, bath products and hard apple cider tastings (a recent addition) are also available. 805.595.2646; www.gopherglen.com. Continued on page 28

Sensorio is open Thursdays-Sundays through September; admission prices vary by day, and VIP packages are available. 805.226.4287; www. sensoriopaso.com. Also recommended: Halfway between Paso and SLO is Atascadero, which offers an historic downtown laden with restaurants and shops, and tranquil Atascadero Lake Park which, in turn, is adjacent to the family-friendly Charles Paddock Zoo. The latter, located on five wooded acres, houses a surprisingly wide and ever-changing variety of critters from around the world. 805.461.5080, charlespaddockzoo.org.

though the pandemic has forced some to curtail or eliminate some of their customary offerings, including daily breakfast. Here are three highly rated exceptions to the latter: —In recent years, Union Road Guest House — just east of Paso Robles amidst a bevy of vineyards — has become a favorite stop for wine country visitors. Hosts Bill and Jesús offer two comfortable rooms and one larger suite, a fine breakfast and a welcome hot tub to soak those sore, tired, wine glass-raising wrist muscles. Book through Airbnb. 310.387.0043; unionroadguesthousepasorobles.com. —At French-themed B&B Petit Soleil in the heart of San Luis Obispo, hoteliers John and Dianne Conner welcome guests with 16 uniquely appointed rooms plus a big breakfast and early evening wine tasting. Just a few blocks from its Monterey Street location is downtown SLO, historic Mission San Luis Obispo and loads of funky shops and fun eateries. 805.549.03321, www.petitsoleilslo.com. —The many options along Cambria’s Moonstone Beach include Moonstone Cottages, offering three themed hideaways (Seascape, Garden Gate and Mariner) amid a cypress grove, and just across the street from Cambria’s mile-long beachside boardwalk. Moonstone’s hot “medley breakfast” is delivered to your door for in-room or picnicking enjoyment. 800.927.1366, cambriainns.com.

WINERIES With more than 250 wineries and more than 100 tasting rooms, most located around Paso Robles and southeast of San Luis Obispo, where do you start? Or finish, for that matter? Here are three that I like, right down to the last sip: —Laetitia Vineyard and Winery, just south of Arroyo Grande off Highway 101. 805.481.1772, laetitiawine.com. —Alapay Cellars, downtown Avila Beach at First and San Miguel Streets. 805.595.2632, alapaycellars.com. —Glunz Family Winery and Cellars, Paso Robles, eight miles east of Highway 101 on Highway 46. 805.238.1400, www.glunzfamilywinery.com. Know, too, that the pandemic has forced tasting rooms to adopt new policies, including advance reservations, food service and outdoor seating. Contact those you wish to visit before you go: discovercaliforniawines.com.

H E A LT H & S A F E T Y SLO County offers many fine outdoor attractions, a good thing in these pandemic times when being outside — to wine, dine or adventure — is safer. Still, because of shutdowns and curtailments, some of the more popular venues may not be as available as in past years. Hearst Castle in San Simeon, for one, has been closed for a year, while the Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles (scheduled July 21-August 1), may or may not happen, depending on SLO County progressing from Orange Tier to Yellow as summer approaches. That means recreational and social activities may have restrictions on attendance, capacity and availability of access, pending a change on “Tier” status. This applies to hotels, restaurants, performing and visual arts venues, recreational areas (parks, beaches and campgrounds) and any other venue normally frequented by visitors. Bottom line: Before heading north for a day or overnight(s) visit, contact your target destination to be sure of its operating hours, restrictions and health protocols. Be mindful, too, that with the evolving nature of the pandemic, restrictions can be lifted or tightened with minimal notice Useful contacts: —SLO County Emergency Info: www.emergencyslo.org. —Port San Luis Harbor District (campgrounds, fishing, boating): www. portsanluis.com. —Explore SLO Cal (visitor info): www.slocal.com/plan/getting-here/ covid-19. v
