T

MAKING THE CONNECTION

urtles and tortoises are at great risk worldwide. More than half of the 300+ species in Order Testudines are critically endangered in the face of habitat loss, climate change, pollution and poaching. For the most vulnerable, time to halt the march to extinction is running out. But what, exactly, does it take to save a species? A truly viable population needs, at minimum, a healthy habitat and diet; appropriate conditions for breeding, egg production, hatching and growth; enough genetic diversity to prevent population bottlenecks; and the ability to eventually sustain itself without outside intervention. The Turtle Conservancy understands the many aspects involved in true conservation, and has taken a multi-pronged approach to address them. Its Conservation Center in Ojai is just one piece of the puzzle, albeit an important one. Here around 30 species of turtles and tortoises are kept in ideal conditions, where they don’t just live, but thrive — and breed. Thus, the center is contributing to “assurance colonies” that can provide necessary genetic diversity to introduce back into wild populations. The Turtle Conservancy does much, much more than offer an East End Eden to turtles and tortoises (as you’ll discover in our Cover Story). But the Conservation Center is a powerful demonstration of how the organization is connecting local efforts to worldwide impacts.

NOVEMBER 2019

Other stories in this month’s issue similarly make crucial connections between humans and the natural world. Once Upon a Watershed (About Town) is an educational program that brings local elementary school students outside to teach them all about the Ventura River ecosystem: the river itself, the estuary, the oak woodlands, the plants and animals that reside in it. In this way the program aims to connect these kids to the place where they live — and, hopefully, foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship as well. The Best Day Foundation (Giving Back) offers participants a different kind of opportunity to connect with their environment. Trained and experienced volunteers buddy up with individuals with special needs to help them surf, kayak and enjoy other beach activities. For many, these adventures wouldn’t be possible without the organization’s program. And how valuable it is, allowing everyone — regardless of physical or mental abilities — to embrace all the ocean and beaches have to offer. There’s no one way to experience and appreciate the natural world. But I do think having that connection is so important. It can spur us to heroic acts on a global scale, or simply encourage us to take better care of our own backyard. Because really, it’s not just our backyard . . . or river . . . or beach. The planet belongs to all its living things. The more we can recognize and respect that, the better. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

O

n Oct. 12, California Coastal Horse Rescue held its annual Octoberfest celebration (also called Harvest of Hope) at its ranch in Ojai. The family-friendly event featured pony cart rides, games, crafts (including pumpkin decorating) and equine demonstrations, with a beer and wine garden for the adults to enjoy. Live bluegrass music was provided by the talented Cindy Bell (of the Bluegrass Ghosts), while the Crazy Greek Food Truck kept attendees well fed. The best part, of course, was spending time in the presence of CCHR’s beautiful horses. CCHR’s mission is to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses and provide them with a second chance at living healthy, happy and productive lives. www.calcoastalhorserescue.com

CROSSING STREA ONCE UPON A WATERSHED connects kids to their natural world.

D

BY KIT STOLZ

avid White, a biologist and educator, leads the Once Upon a Watershed environmental education group that works to connect school children in Ojai and Ventura with their watershed around the Ventura River, using as much exploration and hands-on experience as possible. For White, the learning from nature he shares with kids goes back to his own boyhood. He thinks of the River Dee. Though little known to Americans, this is a long and legendary river, which flows from its source in the high Cairngorms mountain range in Scotland, past Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved Balmoral Castle and eventually out to the North Sea through urbanized neighborhoods in Aberdeen, where White grew up. As a boy White liked to go down to that river. “When I trace back my interest in biology, I look back at what I did when I was a kid, and when I was a kid the River Dee was within easy walking distance of my house. We would go down and play in the river, hunt stickleback [fish] and eels. This was a tidal river and a big salmon river. I had a lot of unstructured nature time with the River Dee.” When White first came to Ventura County in the early 1990s, he connected with the Sespe River, which flows through the Los Padres National Forest backcountry, just as he had with the River Dee, and he feels a similar connection today for the Ventura River. But to make this outdoor education program possible meant finding funding. That means writing grants. Fortunately, he says, when he was a graduate student in Edinburgh and post-graduate researcher in New York, specializing in microscopy and cell biology, he learned that to be successful as a scientist meant writing grants to find funding to stay employed as a scientist. “Part of the training I got as a researcher is about grant writing. A lot of post-doctoral research is funded by soft money, and accessing that is about grant writing, and so I wrote grants when I was working in labs and running labs in Edinburgh and at Cornell and the University of Idaho,” White said. ‘When I started teaching biology at Happy Valley School in Upper Ojai [now Besant Hill School of Happy Valley] it was a natural transition to writing grants for educational fund-raising.” White taught at a number of schools, including Ojai Valley School and Oak Grove, and always liked finding ways to take his biology classes out of doors. He first worked for Once Upon a Watershed shortly after its founder, Sarah Brooke-Benjamin — whom White describes as an “inspired” educator and grant writer — won a federal government grant for an afterschool program for four Ojai Valley Schools. She launched Once Upon a Watershed 15 years ago. White began by volunteering to bring kids from Ojai Valley School into the program. Not long after, around 2006, White met Derek Poultney, who at the time was working at the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. “We were doing wetlands restoration at Besant Meadows Preserve,” said Poultney. “He was 8

Health&BeautySpotlight We recently asked Dr. Allen Levesque of The Smile Shapers in Ventura a few questions about the importance of oral health. What is plaque? Plaque is bad news! The word “plaque” is associated with many systemic illnesses, but is the plaque found on teeth the type that clogs arteries? No. Plaque that causes heart attacks and strokes is made up of cholesterol, fat, and inflammatory cells. Dental plaque is completely different.

It’s a deposit of bacteria that sticks to teeth and gums, which is why you need to manually brush it off. Plaque buildup leads to acid production, which can cause tooth decay, gum inflammation, and ultimately tooth loss.

Approximately 75% of adults have some form of gum disease. Research suggests that it can be transferred to others through saliva, so a simple kiss or just sharing a snack or even blowing on food to cool it down can put children and couples at risk of transmission. Gum disease is often silent – progressing without symptoms – but warning signs may include swollen, red, or bleeding gums, mouth infections and tenderness, bad breath, and loose teeth. But the good news is that gum disease can almost always be prevented. If it starts, it can be treated, and sometimes even reversed. teaching biology and propagating native seeds and we would consult with him on where to find native seeds for restoration projects.” Among those native seeds were acorns that children working with Once Upon a Watershed gathered, propagated and planted in the preserve. Today White and other educators still lead classes in the preserve, sometimes teaching in the shade of young oaks planted by earlier generations of children in the program. Despite its success, Once Upon a Watershed found itself in the fiscal wilderness in recent years, due to the cost of health insurance, worker’s compensation insurance and other legal protections for its handful of staff under new state regulations, long after Brooke-Benjamin moved on. To solve this problem, White reconnected with his associate and friend Poultney, who had in the meantime become executive director of the Ventura Land Trust (VLT), which has made education about Ventura lands central to its mission. “One reason why it’s such a good fit is that we have been concentrating on educating in 7th grade and on up all the way to college, with training through an advanced environmental educational program for college students. Once Upon a Watershed focuses on K-6,” Poultney said. He adds that the collaboration allows Once Upon a Watershed to expand beyond schools in Ojai, to schools in Ventura such as E.P. Foster, De Anza, Ventura Charter School and Sunset. The program still raises its own operating funds, Poultney stresses, and pays VLT for its costs, mostly through grants. Now, however, it can properly employ teachers, drivers and aides under the legal and financial umbrella provided by VLT. Most importantly for both White and Poultney, the organizations agree on the mission. “At the core it’s about connecting kids with nature,” White said. “How can we expect the next generation to care for nature if they don’t know what it is? We try to get the kids to think about the questions they ask. We don’t want to

tell them the names of plants, because that’s meaningless to them. Instead we’ll use a whole bunch of sensory inputs. We’ll use our ‘raccoon touch’ to feel a plant, we’ll use our ‘deer ears’ to listen to the watershed, our ‘coyote sense’ of smell, our ‘eagle eye.’ We want the kids to appreciate the natural world using all of their senses. We’re not trying to teach about nature, we’re trying to learn from nature.” “His particular style is very interactive,” Poultney said. “His latest technique is to have the kids pretend to be objects in the river when it floods. What does it feel like to be a tree when the water level rises? What does it feel like to be a rock when the water picks it up — where does it take them? For many kids, it’s the first time they’ve been to the river, even if they live just a quarter-mile away. And it’s true we all depend on the river and the watershed, just

like the animals who live there, and we all need to take care of it, because it provides us with so many things we need.” Shari Usher, a teacher at Matilija Junior High School who has been working with White for many years in Once Upon a Watershed, speaks of how well prepared White is to lead kids of all ages into the watershed, building on ideas first introduced in the classroom. “David has a really nice way with the kids,” she said. “He’s patient and knowledgeable, and he knows the material so well that he can flow with whatever questions come up. I feel as if he’s a model for a lot of us, one of those people who can talk the talk and walk the walk. He believes in what he’s doing, and he’s very passionate about it. He’s always asking how we can find new ways to connect kids to nature.” For his part, White is thrilled to see Once Upon a Watershed expand beyond its base in Ojai into Ventura and beyond. His teachers have begun to work with the new Rio Del Sol School in Oxnard, for one, and he and his

staff have been hearing from parents and teachers at other schools interested in the program. “I think there’s increasingly an acknowledgement of the importance of connecting with nature,” White said. “I hear from students who are concerned about our climate emergency. They’re saying: What can we do? Being able to plant trees is something we can do. It’s a nature-based climate solution, and that’s a core thing for us, planting trees with kids.” v Once Upon a Watershed 805.390.0747 info@onceuponawatershed.org www.onceuponawatershed.org

NON-PROFIT SHOWCASE

Ventura County’s 2019 was less tumultuous than years past. Nevertheless, the recent outbreaks of the Easy and Maria fires have further demonstrated our community’s vulnerability in the face of a devastating new normal. In addition, many people continue to feel the repercussions — housing shortages, food insecurity and more — of the Thomas and Woolsey fires, whose anniversaries are on the horizon. And of course, numerous others face difficulties (economic and otherwise) that go beyond wildfires. The struggle to survive knows no season.Yet it is this month, in our November Giving Back issue, that we ask our readers to get involved, lend a hand and show our less fortunate community members that they are not alone. In the following twenty page section, you will learn more about the outstanding local organizations that need your help with donations and volunteer work. As a wise person once said “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.” Let us show our compassion by helping our fellow residents in Ventura County.

HEALING

HOPE

Our Rehabilitation Centers foster an environment of acceptance and mutual support, where members find friends and caring staff to assist them in their quest to accomplish self-responsibility. We have four Mental Wellness programs: New Visions Rehabilitation Center Ventura, Oxnard Clubhouse Rehabilitation Center, The Wellness Center Oxnard, and Quality of Life Peer Support and Rapid Integration and Support & Engagement program to connect people to services through Behavioral Health.

In 2014, Turning Point Foundation’s Street Outreach Program showed that Veterans are at least 20% of the homeless population and 30% of those were suffering from mental illness. Turning Point felt compelled to take action and we expanded our programs to address the individual needs of our veterans bringing together all the social services in Ventura County creating a safety net of support for those that have given so much. We remodeled a building for the Veteran’s Transitional Housing which opened in August of 2015 to 10 veterans and expanded in 2018 to 15 veterans.

GIVING BACK

BEST DAY EVER!

The Best Day Foundation creates unforgettable experiences for children with special needs.

E

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK verybody could use a “best buddy” and a fun day in the sun learning new skills, right? This perhaps holds even more true for young people with physical and mental challenges. That’s what Best Day Foundation — with a very active chapter in Ventura — is all about. The smiles (there have been over half a million of them) on the faces of both participants and volunteers are priceless, and the activities that are opened up to those with special needs are immensely fulfilling to every person who joins in. Tandem surfer and water safety volunteer Sophie Elliott, 21, a Newbury Park paramedic, started volunteering when she was just 13 years old, thanks to her mom, Robin Elliott, a biologist at Amgen who helps out behind the scenes with planning and registration on event “Best Days”. “Since I was young, I always loved seeing the impact on the kids and the families,” Elliott told me by phone. “I see them every summer and watching them grow up and the progress they have made over the past six to seven years is very cool.” She cited twin boys, both nonverbal, that she took tandem surfing. Years later, she sees them making attempts to socialize and notes the impact on the families: “So many parents never thought they’d see their kids surfing!” Volunteers not only cheer on the participants, but also give parents a much-needed break from the rigors of parenting a special needs child or young adult. “Our group of volunteers — many have been doing this a long time — are like family,” Elliott added. “We often see each other outside the event, surfing at C Street.” Founded in Santa Cruz in 2008 by Brooks Lambert and Max Montgomery — and with the love spreading from Ventura to Florida (and even as far afield as Tanzania) — the Best Day Foundation supports children and young adults whose special needs and health challenges include autism, blindness, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and other injuries, illnesses or developmental challenges. Ages 4-24 are welcome (most participants are in the 7-18 age range). The foundation enables these children and young adults to build confidence and self-esteem through adventure activities that stretch their limits, expand their true potential and reinforce their achievement. It also connects youth with diverse populations in their community. }} ALL SMILES A good time is had by all when Dillon Schaub and his “buddy” hit the waves for boogie boarding in Ventura. Beach activities include tandem surfing, body boarding, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), outrigger canoeing and other activities. A typical Best Day (six events are held annually at C Street and in the Ventura Harbor) goes something like this: Volunteers set up at 8 a.m. and hold an orientation. At 9 a.m. the participants show up for registration and are paired with their volunteer “Best Buddy.” Buddies may be high school students, Baby Boomers or anyone in between. They in turn escort each person throughout the day. Then the real fun begins! Water crews take the kids out into the water and they spend two to three hours in the Pacific Ocean, partaking in water activities. If someone prefers to play in the sand, they do that, too. Everybody has lunch together and “goody bags” with donations from local businesses, including Patagonia, are passed out. Spencer Makenzie’s has provided lunch for every event in Ventura since the organization was started over 10 years ago. At day’s end, a “human tunnel” is formed to run through for “high five” hand slaps and to receive an award! Not surprisingly, there are many repeat customers, thanks to a very reasonable $30 registration fee. No one is turned away for lack of funds — scholarships are provided to subsidize the approximately $200 cost per person.

There are no more than 45 participants for each event with anywhere from 80-100 volunteers, who work both in and out of the water. In addition to the fun activities, Best Day provides back-end services, support, training and business resources to ensure that safe, self-sufficient programs are created. The overall strategy is to “empower communities across the country to offer special days at the beach to children with special needs.” The Ventura Chapter (like all chapters) is completely volunteer run and always welcomes new “beach buddy” volunteers. Those with additional skills (fluent LEFT: Water team volunteers (such as Shannon McDermott, left) are trained to maximize fun while also keeping participants safe during ocean adventures. in American Sign Language or Spanish, for example) are also welcome. The program is funded through donations, grants and sponsorships, but perhaps most importantly through the manpower from committed volunteers past and present, like Chipper “Bro” Bell, a former Patagonia employee and owner of Surf Class. He recruited Nancy Pederson in 2010 and she has been actively involved ever since, serving as a chapter co-chair and as a national board member. “While I am not a surfer or part of the water teams, my strengths lie in general organization and leadership,” Pedersen explains. She credits the joy of working with other volunteers, as well as the kids and their families, with inspiring her to come back every year. “So many facets of the community show up to make the events

happen . . . surfers, students, professionals, teachers… The list goes on!” she notes, adding, “Patagonia donates products for goody bags for the kids, Starbucks keeps us caffeinated, both local Trader Joe’s stores provide breakfast items and fruit and the Pepsi distribution facility has provided water. It really does take a village and it is great to see it all come together!” Volunteers have contributed 38,999 hours, over 2,000 kids have been served and 59 events have been held to date. Wouldn’t you like to add to those numbers? v Best Day Foundation www.bestdayfoundation.org 713.569.3125

THE BEST MEDICINE

Camarillo comedian Jason Love is fighting cancer, one joke at a time. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER

To

local comedy lovers, Jason Love is no stranger. The Camarillobased funny man has been making the rounds on the Ventura County club circuit for years, and also hosts and performs at a variety of other venues, including Comedy & Cocktails at Studio Channel Islands Art Center and the monthly Stand-Up Comedy on the Hill series at Hillcrest Center for the Arts. He’s also known for his Love & Laughter program, where he brings free comedy shows to cancer patients and their loved ones through the Cancer Support Community. Ventana Monthly caught up with Love a few days before he embarked on a Caribbean cruise gig to talk about comedy, cancer and the power of a good laugh.

NOVEMBER 2019

How did you get into comedy? Was it a calling from a young age, or did you find your way to it later? I got into comedy in 10th grade, when I was suspended by my Russian math teacher for “disruption the class.” I knew what he wanted me to say but went for the laugh. Story of my life. How did your comedic style develop? That’s a tough one. Why does the caged bird sing? I think you get your voice when something inside you snaps. Like that Michael Douglas movie Falling Down, only without the sledgehammer (unless you’re Gallagher). What brought you to Ventura County? I grew up in Thousand Oaks and now live in Camarillo. Made it all the way down the grade. Explore the world a little. You know. The more places I go, though, the happier I am to be in Ventura County. I work on cruise ships and spend a lot of time in the Caribbean. Makes you appreciate little things like lines on the road, police, deodorant . . . Some of these ports have no roads at all. Tom Hanks comes wading out: “Wilson!” When did you first start doing Love &Laughter, and what originally inspired you? I started Love & Laughter when I lost a friend to cancer. I wanted to join the fight, and comedy is all I know. I’ve always admired the Cancer Support Community for providing free services to the public at large, “So that no one goes through cancer alone.” Love & Laughter is just one program to complement their counseling, yoga, etc. Tell us how it works. Love & Laughter is free for the Cancer Support Community, but I do have a few supporters on Patreon. Each show has different professional comedians who are good enough to donate their time and talent. I run monthly shows for CSC in Westlake Village, Pasadena, Redondo Beach, West L.A and Walnut Creek. Sometimes I headline the galas, like Hope’s Haven in Westlake Village or the one coming up in Knoxville, Tennessee. }}

CONVERSATION

When not on the road or the high seas, Jason Love hosts monthly comedy shows at the Studio Movie Grill in Simi Valley, the Westlake Village Twin in Westlake Village, Hillcrest Center for the Arts in Thousand Oaks, Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo and McGregor’s Craft Beer in Moorpark. Find his full schedule at jasonlove.eventbrite.com. For more information on the Cancer Support Community, visit www.cancersupportcommunity.org.

They say that laughter is the best medicine. How has Love & Laughter helped the audience members? What changes do you see in the people who come to the show? This is the part that I wish you could see — how the members’ body language changes over the hour. We just laugh and laugh at the absurdity of it all. But yes, laughter is the best medicine. Especially when you have my health plan. I’m not going to the doctor anymore. I’m getting my eye exam at the DMV, X-rays at the airport . . . Some people themselves benefit from helping others. Would you say that’s true of you with Love & Laughter? How has the nonprofit helped you? That’s a good Oprah question. Altruism, I guess, is when your selfishness benefits someone else. I get out of this the satisfaction of helping, but it’s also like flipping the bird to cancer. Feels a little Johnny Cash. Can you share some memorable experiences you’ve had performing? How much time do you have? I used to do a podcast with one hell gig per week. Recently a fistfight broke out during my show on the Carnival booze cruise. Passengers got on board so drunk, they didn’t even know where we were going. It’s the world’s biggest Uber. Early on,

though, I had a good experience where at a Cancer Support show this bald woman hugged me so hard, I thought I would break. She took my hand and told me that it was the first time she had laughed in weeks. That’s when I decided to launch Love & Laughter. What plans do you have for Love & Laughter moving forward? I’d like to branch out to other groups like addiction facilities, clinics for depression, etc. We comedians work out on weekdays anyway; why not make it count. Ironically, cancer support audiences are 10 times warmer than what you’d face at the Comedy Store. We don’t have to unfold anyone’s arms because they’re in the business and have a thing. Do you have any other big performances in the works? The one show that I would like to promote is my annual New Year’s Eve comedy bash at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center (formerly Civic Arts Plaza . . . the new name just rolls off the tongue). That NYE show starts at 7 p.m. with four headliners, ending with crowd-favorite Kira Soltanovich from The Tonight Show. There is an East Coast countdown at 9 p.m. For the past eight years, I’ved produced this show at the ever-changing movie theater in the Oaks Mall. This year we needed more space. v

COVER STORY

HALF-SHELL HEROES The Turtle Conservancy works at home and abroad to save turtles and tortoises from extinction.

O

BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER

ARAKAN forest turtle hatchling, native to the Arakan Hills of Myanmar. Once thought extinct, it was rediscovered in Asian food markets in the 1990s. Even so, it remains critically endangered. Photo courtesy of the Turtle Conservancy

n Ojai’s East End is a little oasis of beauty and serenity, some 10 acres filled with oaks and a few orange trees, beautifully landscaped with succulents, charming greenhouses and a few patches of grass — hidden from the casual observer by picturesque Spanish-style walls and gates. It’s the kind of place that would make most humans visitors sigh in contentment. For the majority of the residents, it is salvation. This small piece of paradise is the Conservation Center of the Turtle Conservancy, home to several hundred turtles and tortoises, almost all of which are critically endangered. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List (considered by many to be the most comprehensive inventory of conservation status), more than half of all Testudines (the taxonomic order that contains turtle and tortoise species; chelonian is another commonly used term) worldwide are threatened with extinction. From the cloud forests of Southeast Asia to the woodlands of Madagascar to South Africa’s South-Western Cape and the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico (and beyond), these creatures face tremendous population pressure. Poaching

(for traditional Chinese medicine, cuisine and the illegal pet trade), habitat loss and climate change have depleted chelonian numbers across the planet. Continued on page 58

Conserving these species is the main mission of the Turtle Conservancy.

A TRANSCONTINENTAL JOURNEY Its story begins on the East Coast. Founder Eric Goode is a California native who moved to New York in the 1970s. “He made his fortune in hotels and clubs in New York City,” explains Maximilian Maurer, public outreach and membership director. “He spends all his money on turtles and turtle conservation.” Despite a glamorous background, Goode is a reptile enthusiast at heart. He cultivated friendships with zoologists and other researchers, including John Behler, curator of herpetology at the Bronx Zoo, run by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). In 1979, Behler helped establish a herd of radiated tortoises from Madagascar at the Wildlife Survival Center on St. Catherines Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. Other species eventually followed, including the angonoka or ploughshare tortoise and several species from Southeast Asia. (Maurer, who joined the conservancy in 2010, grew up on nearby St. Simons Island, and remembers seeing these same individuals when he was a child.) When WCS discontinued the island program in 2004, the tortoise population — around 200 individuals — needed a new home. Goode found one for them on two acres in Ojai, selected for its Mediterranean climate favorable to many of the species. The grounds were carefully (and beautifully) landscaped and state-of-the-art greenhouses, tortoise houses, a nursery, quarantine area and other structures were built to make an environment suitable for several different chelonian species. The campus expanded in 2011, when it acquired some adjacent property. Today, the center is home to several hundred individuals representing over 30 species of turtles and tortoises, including leaf turtles, box turtles, Burmese star and mountain tortoises, wood turtles and even giant tortoises (from both the Galapagos and the Seychelles). Several individuals have been rescued from the illegal pet trade. Others come from zoos, research facilities and similar institutions (the conservancy is certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Many were hatched right here.

RESEARCH RESORT Under the watchful eye of their keepers, the center’s turtles are thriving, with space to graze, climate-controlled environments, pristine water, appropriate and abundant food, freedom from poachers and soup pots. Every effort has been made to mimic the natural environment for every species. As a result, the center offers an unparalleled opportunity to research these animals, some of which are exceedingly rare, incredibly cryptic and live in hard-to-reach areas in the wild. “One important thing this place allows us to do is observe and learn a lot about them,” Maurer confirms. It’s not just conservancy staff taking advantage of this opportunity. The

Ojai campus hosts researchers, students and even artists and photographers interested in studying these creatures. One species creating some excitement is the impressed tortoise, native to cloud forests in Southeast Asia. Living at high elevations (6,500 ft., according to Maurer), this mushroom specialist is particularly at risk from climate change. “If it gets much warmer in their habitat, they can’t go further up,” Maurer explains. “They could go extinct.” Difficult to study in situ (due to its narrow range and a light-brown, leafshaped shell that makes it nearly impossible to spot in the wild) and hard to maintain in captivity, the Conservation Center’s success at keeping its impressed tortoise population alive and breeding is a testament to the excellence of its care.

PAN’S BOX TURTLE emerging from its shell. Several species of turtles successfully breed, produce eggs and hatch at the Turtle Conservancy’s Conservation Center in Ojai -- a testament to the exceptional care the facility offers. Photo courtesy of the Turtle Conservancy

Another source of great interest are the Vietnamese leaf turtles rescued from an illegal pet trade confiscation two years ago. After being nursed back to health, two of them successfully mated. “She laid her first egg,” Maurer says of the female. “It’s very exciting!” It also provides crucial information: “Breeding and the production of eggs are really the only ways to know if they’re healthy.”

IN SITU CONSERVATION In fact, many of the species kept at the Turtle Conservancy’s Conservation Center breed successfully. Some of the hatchlings remain, while others go to zoos or similar conservation and research facilities (as a gift, a loan or part of an exchange).

Hatchlings of one very special species meet another fate altogether. The golden coin turtle (also known as the Chinese three-striped box turtle) of Asia once ranged from South China to Vietnam. Prized in traditional Chinese medicine, it was hunted nearly to extinction. Conservationists in Hong Kong are trying to save the species by reintroducing captive-bred individuals into remnant populations, to boost numbers and increase genetic diversity. Since 2013, the Turtle Conservancy has been working closely with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden to send Ojai-hatched golden coin turtles back into the wild. The relationship with Kadoorie Farm is just one example of the Turtle Conservancy’s efforts to protect turtles worldwide. “Most of the Turtle Conservancy’s work is what you’re not seeing,” Continued on page 60

Maurer says, explaining that its efforts go far beyond the Ojai Valley. “We’re actually buying critical turtle and tortoise habitat to put into a network of preserves. That’s probably our best work. . . . As we progressed, we realized that conservation is not breeding in captivity, but protecting critical habitat.” According to Maurer, most of the money raised by the conservancy goes toward purchasing land to keep it healthy for turtles. Currently, the conservancy and its partner organizations (which include Rainforest Trust and Global Wildlife Conservation, among others) have purchased over 65,000 acres for preservation, supporting its “in situ” conservation program — conservation efforts that take place in the species’ actual habitat. Around 1,000 acres are in the Fynbos ecosystem, a sliver of rich biodiversity on the southern tip of South Africa, known for its striking flowers. It’s also home to around 90 percent of the remaining population of the geometric tortoise. “It’s saving a species,” Maurer says. “That’s a lot of responsibility.” Similar programs are being implemented in Mexico, Madagascar and the Philippines. The Turtle Conservancy is also working with the Terrapin Nesting Project in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, to restore the population of Northern diamondback terrapins. Protecting habitat isn’t just good for the turtles: Numerous other plant and animal species endemic to these regions benefit from conservation efforts, including the military macaw and beaded lizard in Mexico; the Cape sugarbird, cobra and grysbok of the Fynbos; and Palawan pangolins in the Philippines. Where turtles thrive, everything else usually does, too — hence, one of the conservancy’s mottos: Save Turtles. Save the Planet.

AMBASSADORS OF AN ANCIENT WORLD The Conservation Center is much more than its lovely East End gardens and phenomenal collection of chelonians. But as a showcase to draw attention to the Turtle Conservancy’s cause, it’s hard to beat. It’s not open to the public, but tours are available to members, and students at nearby Thacher School have the opportunity to take some of their biology classes here. Seeing these ancient reptiles — older than both snakes and crocodiles, and dating back to the Jurassic — up close and personal is a stunning experience.

FACING PAGE: The radiated tortoise, a remnant of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s captive-breeding program on St. Catherines Island, GA. RIGHT: Maurer holds a mud turtle in Mexico. TOP: Three resident Galapagos giant tortoises, the Conservation Center’s biggest ambassadors. Photos courtesy of the Turtle Conservancy

The great ambassadors of the center are its giant tortoises. Natives of the Galapagos and Seychelles islands, they know no natural predators, and thus display almost no fear in the presence of . . . well, anything. But some do like to be groomed (an activity undertaken by finches in the wild), and a few at the Turtle Conservancy will approach humans, reaching out surprisingly long necks and rising tall on their legs to be rubbed. Touching the dry, wrinkled, leathery skin of these creatures is one way of making direct contact with the natural world, one far older than human existence, primitive and a little alien. It’s a reminder not only of the wonders that share the planet with us, but of endurance . . . and, paradoxically,

fragility. That which has survived for millennia now faces extinction in just these last few centuries — due almost exclusively to the actions of humans. It will be up to us to prevent their permanent loss. v
