A MUSEUM, A MUSICIAN AND A CONSULATE WALK INTO A MAGAZINE…
ive music is filling auditoriums, theaters are turning on the lights, festivals have resumed, films are back on the big screen and galleries are inviting the public in for art shows, workshops and classes . . . Yes, the arts are thriving once again! There are still plenty of adjustments being made (proof of vaccination, anyone?) but Ventura County hasn’t seen this much activity in months, making this an exciting time to present our October Arts Issue. Speaking of exciting . . . 2021 is a momentous year for Mexico, concurrently recognizing the bicentennial of Mexican Independence in 1821, 500 years since the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521, 700 years since the founding of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City) in 1321, and approximately 100 years since the Mexican Revolution in 1920. To commemorate all of this, and celebrate Latinx Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), the Mexican Consulate in Oxnard joined forces with local community organizations to put on a stunning display of Mexican art (Culture). Works by several mid-20th-century Mexican masters can be seen along with contemporary art by Rafael Perea de la Cabada, born in Mexico City and now a living in Southern California. It’s a dynamic mingling of old and new, ancient symbolism and modern-day perspective . . . and a rare opportunity to see it all in one local venue.

As a founding member of the Byrds (and several other notable bands), Chris Hillman was one of the most influential musicians of his time. He helped develop the music genre we today refer to as country or folk rock, and Ventana Monthly had the privilege of interviewing the Ventura resident this month. Hillman discusses his earliest influences, surviving the Thomas Fire, his new autobiography and more in Conversation. Finally, on our cover is Roya Alt of the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks. This “little museum that could” has weathered a lot of changes through the years, including a big move in 2018, a new director in 2020 and a pandemic shutdown. Through it all, CMATO has never ceased to impress and inspire. We put the spotlight on Alt and her vision for CMATO in Profile. A museum, a musician and the Mexican Consulate. Three different stories, three different approaches to art, numerous ways to engage with creativity. It’s people and places like these that make Ventura County a more vibrant place. Yes, the arts are alive and well here, and I’m delighted to highlight a few of them in these pages. Enjoy!

igh Street Arts Center in Moorpark held its annual fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 11. As 2021 marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11, organizers chose to make the event a salute to first responders and raise money for the Ventura County Fire Department’s Widows and Orphans Fund. Former U.S. Congressman Elton Gallegly, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1987-2013 and represented California Districts 21, 23 and 24, donated a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol on September 11, 2002. Ventura County Fire Station 47 Capt. Tom Glauser and Station 44 Engineer Chad Diederich took part in a Color Guard led by bagpiper Bill Boetticher. Also in attendance were Capt. John Jesseman, Engineer Richard Randolph and firefighter Nick Hyatt — all from nearby Station 42. Vocalist Hannah Davey, who has opened games at the Staples Center for National Hockey League team Los Angeles Kings, sang the national anthem. Also recognized at the event was former American Airlines Captain Jim Cassou, who for most of the summer in 2001 flew AA Flight 11, the first plane hijacked on 9/11. His assignment changed just two weeks prior, but he knew the flight crews aboard both American planes. The event raised $12,800. highstreetartscenter.com

WEST VENTURA COUNTY WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S THE COLLECTION AT RIVERPARK

O
ver 300 area residents participated in this year’s West Ventura County Walk to End Alzheimer’s at The Collection at Riverpark on Saturday, Sept. 25, while others joined from home by walking in their own neighborhoods.
On Walk day, families, teams, sponsors and volunteers came together to view a brief opening ceremony and experience the Promise Flower Garden, where colorful flowers representing participants’ personal connections to the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia decorated the field of Townsquare Park. Walkers then completed their route throughout The Collection shopping center, returning to a mariachi band performance. A dog costume contest was held and judged by special guests Oxnard City Councilmember Bryan McDonald and his wife, Lorraine. The event raised more than $118,000 to fund research and local services throughout Ventura County, including support groups, education programs, care consultations, respite grants and a 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900). Thanks to the efforts of the Walk’s co-chairs Pedro Chavez and Gabriella Rodriguez and their hard-working committee, the amount raised surpassed the walk’s original goal of $100,000 and more than doubled its fundraising amount from 2020. “We are so grateful to all of our sponsors and participants — and we’re especially thankful for our dedicated committee members who made this year’s event such a success,” said Aracely Avila, development manager, Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter. “While the in-person event looked different than in years past, we heard from so many participants that coming together again — even with social distancing and other COVID precautions in place — meant a lot to them, especially after such a challenging year.” Donations can still be made to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s through Dec. 31 at act.alz.org/westventura. The California Central Coast Chapter will be hosting four more walks this year, including the East Ventura County Walk on Oct. 23, the San Luis Obispo Walk on Oct. 30, and the Santa Barbara Walk on Nov. 8. To register and for more information, visit alz.org/walk. 1. Family and friends of Jesus Reyes made a strong showing at the walk. 2. The Promise Flower Garden decorated the field of Townsquare Park. 3. Pedro Chavez and Gabriella Rodriguez, co-chairs of the West Ventura County Walk to End Alzheimer’s. 4. CULTURE
DYNAMISM,
DUALITY AND CULTURAL RICHNESS Mexican Consulate in Oxnard hosts two commemorative art exhibitions.
T
BY KATHRYN STELMACH ARTUSO
he eagle wrestling with the snake is one of Mexico’s best known symbols. Yet in the hands of the artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada, the emblem takes on new significance and a deeper resonance. If you enter the Mexican Consulate in Oxnard to see such artwork, your eyes will immediately be drawn to the giant tapestry on the left wall, depicting the serpent and eagle intertwined in writhing, perpetual motion. The inextricability of the two animals is reflected in the title of the work, “Aguipiente y Serguila,” a play on words that mimics their endless, interpenetrating twist. “Where, exactly, is the eagle?” you ask, backing up for a better perspective. Perea de la Cabada chuckles. “An artist’s job is to raise questions, not provide easy answers.” Such oppositional dynamism structures the two art exhibitions currently on display at the Consulate of Mexico in Oxnard,

Cempohualli and Gráfica Mexicana, which run until the end of the year and are free to the public. The exhibitions, developed with support from the Port of Hueneme and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, are a part of the commemoration of several anniversaries, including the bicentennial celebration of Mexican Independence in 1821, 500 years since the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521, 700 years since the founding of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City) in 1321, and approximately 100 years since the Mexican Revolution in 1920. (Perea de la Cabada’s entire series “Aguipiente y Serguila / Un México Para Armar” is concurrently on display at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City.) The dialectical interplay and tensions of Perea de la Cabada’s artwork continue as you enter the Cempohualli exhibition hall on the first floor, where images of male and female exist in delicate balance and occasional accord, as exemplified in his acrylic “Encyclopedia Series” and in his etchings titled “Unidad” and “Raices.” “Unidad,” in particular, showcases a harmonious androgyny, in which masculine and feminine elements exist in dyadic complementarity. Perea de la Cabada notes that Cempohualli is the Aztec word for 20 or “full count,” like the total number of fingers and toes . . . and the total number of artworks in this exhibition. Yet it also denotes “a circle that rounds up,” echoing the cyclical anniversary celebrations and connoting images of revolution and counter-revolution, stasis and movement. This opposition can be seen in another charcoal drawing from his “Aguipiente y Serguila” series, which displays the eagle and serpent poised on the nopal in compositional equilibrium, contrasting sharply with the swirling dynamism of the tapestry outside. Representing a “cultural stalemate” before a violent clash, the emblem has been reconfigured by Perea de la Cabada, who said he wanted to reinterpret or “own the symbol” for himself after seeing it Continued on page 18

constantly throughout his life. With a diverse ancestral lineage, including Spanish, Italian and pre-Hispanic Indian, Perea de la Cabada draws upon a variety of ancient and contemporary influences in work that also encompasses an impressive variety of media. “I create my own symbols to represent our times,” he said. “I feel I’m more like a composer, more than an interpreter . . . I want the work to have a meaning that is current to our times, even though there’s an ancient feeling to it.” Believing in “letting the process dictate the direction of the work,” he also compares the artist to one who keeps water flowing smoothly, the one who “moves the paddle and tries to make it run again . . . finding all those situations in society that need to be shaken, that need to be moved.” Nevertheless, he notes that art should not be didactic propaganda; in fact, the complex, ambiguous symbol of the eagle and serpent is associated with Aztec solar mythology and with the discovery of Tenochtitlán, but the image has accrued multiple layers of meaning over the years. Peering closely at the charcoal drawing, Alexis Moreno of Oxnard said, “It’s a balance of both the snake and the eagle, and it looks like they’re balancing on the nopal, too. It represents our balance, and it’s calm. All three of the symbols are just — their own. They stand on their own.”

Correa de García of Santa Barbara. Near the top of the stairs is an etching by Alfredo Zalce, titled “Michoacán,” which portrays a family in exodus from their homeland, navigating a small boat to a new country. A little farther down the hall, you notice a vibrant surrealist figure in “Affiche Avante Lettre,” a painting by Rufino Tamayo, one of Mexico’s best known artists, which reminds you of Perea de la Cabada’s “Unidad.” The fluctuating polarities in Perea de la Cabada’s work also echo Tamayo’s mural “Duality,” which appears in the National Anthropology and History Museum in Mexico City, revealing a serpent and jaguar locked in another conflict derived from Aztec mythology. The mural had a profound effect on Perea de la Cabada in his youth, before he moved to the U.S. at the age of 24 (after winning a national award) to pursue a master of fine arts degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Rafael Perea de la Cabada’s exhibition of his entire series Aguipiente y Serguila / Un México Para Armar is concurrently on display at UAM in Mexico. Perea de la Cabada notes that such duality is “permeated all over Mexican culture,” and “you always feel that you are very vital when you’re in Mexico because you’re dealing sometimes with extremes . . . You really feel very alive.” In the Consulate’s upstairs exhibition of Mexican modernism, Tamayo’s work appears alongside lithographs and prints by other famous artists such as José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, who were best known for their massive murals that celebrated Mexican culture. Images of traditional agrarian life and the campesino (peasant farmer) exist in dynamic counterpoint to images of the Mexican 8

Revolution, where even women wear cartridge belts and bandoliers, as shown in the linocut, “Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana,” by Mariana Yampolsky. Other highlights from the collection include images from the Bracero Program of migrant workers and images of Emiliano Zapata and Paul Leroy Robeson. Like a Möbius strip or an ouroboros, the two exhibitions underscore the cyclicality of historical Mexican emblems and events, which deserve not only communal celebration but also aesthetic contemplation. Expressing gratitude for the generosity of the Garcías’ contribution, Euclides del Moral Arbona, the Head Consul, encourages the local and regional community to visit and enjoy the art exhibitions at the Consulate. “We’re really looking forward to engaging our community and to engaging our constituency,” del Moral Arbona said, “to be aware of Mexico’s cultural richness and be proud of it.” Gráfica Mexicana and Cempohualli are free and open to the public and will run through December 2021. When visiting the Consulate, please register and sign in downstairs before visiting the exhibition spaces. v

“OUT OF SOMETHING BAD, Talking with Byrds co-founder, country rock legend and musician extraordinaire Chris Hillman.
C
BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER
hris Hillman is a legend in his own time. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist — a master of guitar, bass and mandolin — has spent more than 60 years in the business, paving the way for other musicians along the way. As a co-founder of the Byrds, he helped develop the distinctly Southern California sound that would become known as folk rock. The sound deepened, evolved and refined through subsequent groups like the Flying Burrito Brothers (co-founded with Gram Parsons) and the Desert Rose Band (with Herb Pedersen and John Jorgenson). His influence can be clearly seen in the music of bands such as the Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, although groups such as the Bangles and R.E.M. bear some folk rock marks as well. A native of San Diego County and a Ventura resident for over 40 years, Hillman has continued to write, play and record music, and most recently (in November 2020) released a critically acclaimed autobiography. Hillman answered some questions for Ventana Monthly between wrapping up a weekend of live performances in Thousand Oaks and preparing for a tour that will take him to Louisiana and Texas in November. The ever-thoughtful musician discussed his earliest influences, creating the unique sound of the Byrds, his relationship with the late, great Tom Petty, living through the Thomas Fire and more. When I think of the music of the 1950s, I think of Elvis and Chuck Berry. But you were drawn more to the country side of things. What was it about country and folk music that spoke to you? Initially I was totally immersed in early rock and roll. From Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker to Chuck Berry, Little Continued on page 26

ON THE RECORD Hillman recording musical selections for his soon-tobe-released audiobook of Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother, and Beyond.
the mandolin entered my life, after hearing a record by Mike Seeger. You were one among several Southern California musicians that would go on to become legends — Bernie Leadon, David Crosby, Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne, just to name a few. What was it like for a young musician at that time? What do you think was going on in the area that was so inspirational for so many of these musicians? It was a relatively new business, the record business. You had to have some talent to get into the front door, and of course to know someone that would have contacts within the companies or recording studios or the folk clubs. I always considered myself very lucky and very blessed to have been able to work with such fine artists. It was a very creative time, in a relatively small area of Southern California. I don’t know what was the catalyst, but it was a different era.
Richard and Elvis Presley. I was drawn to other forms of music as well. Our family lived in North San Diego County when I was growing up, and I always loved watching the live country music shows out of Los Angeles on Saturday nights: Town Hall Party, Spade Cooley Show, Cal’s Corral. It was honest music and it opened a part of the culture many of us weren’t aware of. Who were some of your favorite bands and musicians when you first started getting into music? When I first started learning to play, I listened to folk artists Pete Seeger, Lead Belly and the Weavers. And later, bluegrass musicians Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers. Did other members of your family play music? No one else in my immediate family took an active role in playing music. But my great grandfather Charles Charlton did play in the Los Angeles Shriner Band. How old were you when you got your first guitar? At what point did you start exploring other instruments, like the mandolin? I bought my first guitar at the age of 15, and at age 16

The Byrds are widely recognized as pioneers of the folk rock genre. Did the band start out trying to create an original sound? How did the sound we think of today as country rock or folk rock evolve? Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby came out of a folk music background. Michael Clarke came out of a rock background. And I came out of a traditional bluegrass background. The Byrds created a purely unique sound based on our individual musical backgrounds. The term “country rock” is really what a journalist coined in 1965 when the Byrds recorded Porter Wagoners’ “Satisfied Mind,” on our second album, Turn! Turn! Turn! There is more emphasis on the back beat, similar to what Buck Owens did with the Buckaroos. Then Ricky Nelson, with all of his great records. We continued in the Byrds with our album Younger Than Yesterday and later Sweetheart of the Rodeo. You’ve been a part of so many influential bands: The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Desert Rose Band. What were you seeking with all of these different projects? I loved being a part of all of these fine bands. I was never seeking anything but musical fulfillment. Through the decades you’ve worked with some huge names (some again and again). Who among them stands out to you today? I loved working with Dwight Yoakam, Stephen Stills, Marty Stuart, Roger McGuinn and, of course, Tom Petty. 8
What brought you to Ventura? My wife, Connie, and I moved to Ventura in 1980, to get away from Los Angeles, but to still have the ability to drive down there for business. Having grown up so near the coast in San Diego County, Ventura reminded us much of those early days. It seemed like the right thing to do, and back then it was so beautiful. Not a lot of people, and not a place where we would expect an urban sprawl. Your last solo album, 2017’s Bidin’ My Time, was produced by the late Tom Petty, who frequently discussed the influence the Byrds had on his musical development. What was your relationship like? I loved Tom. He was a truly fantastic artist and a sweet soul. We became very close while working on the Bidin’ My Time album. He was one of the most humble men that I have ever encountered, who occupied such an important place our culture.
was a tragedy for so many people, including many of my close neighbors. We nearly lost our home, if not for the amazing firefighters of Ventura County’s Station 41. As they drove up our hill, our neighbors’ home exploded, with their balcony crashing into our home, and igniting the kitchen. The city generators were not activated, and therefore the hydrants were useless. Despite that, the firefighters broke down our front doors and extinguished the fire with whatever was left on their engine. As with many people who were displaced by the fire, we moved to a rented home for about 10 months, until the reconstruction was finished. Playing music was the last thing that I would be thinking of doing, until Roger McGuinn phoned me with the idea to go out on tour with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour. So out of something bad, good things sometimes come. John Jorgenson, a former member of the Desert Rose Band, also lives in Ventura, and ended up putting you and your wife up when you first evacuated. How long have the two of you known each other? I’ve known John since 1984. He is not only an incredible musician but also a dear friend. I really couldn’t perform without John, and Herb Pedersen up there with me on stage. I have been working with them off and on since 1985. John is what I refer to as a “giving musician,” meaning he is supportive of anyone he plays with at whatever level they can play. He never holds his amazing talent above anyone. He is a humble, gentle man.
2017 was an enormous year for you. Shortly after Bidin’ My Time came out, Petty died on Oct. 2. And then a few months after that the Thomas Fire did significant damage to your home. How did you weather such an emotionally tumultuous Are there a lot of people from time? the earlier decades of your career I think that my trust in that you’re still close to? What inspired you to write a book? I was ready to end the tour when I was told of Tom’s passing. But Just felt like the time was right to lay it out. told by the person who was actually there. I started sketching out the book in 2013, and it sat on my shelf for at least four years. My plan was to write it for my children. In 2017, I was approached by Scott Bomar, the publisher of BMG Books. He had read an interview where I spoke about it, and after a meeting, we agreed on a publishing deal. And then I started to rework the manuscript with the help of my wife, Connie, and Scott. We took a good amount of time researching the dates, and wanted to be accurate. Also, sourcing and licensing a number of photographs to give the reader a real sense of what is going on in the text of the book. What thoughts and emotions rose up as you were looking back over your life? When I actually received a physical copy of the first edition, it was great to see it all come together after so many years in the process of writing. The memories all stand out, but those remain mine to hold. I think if one buys the book, reads the book, enjoys the book, they will come to their own conclusions. I understand that the audiobook of Time Between will be out soon. Yes, the audiobook will come out on Nov. 19, published by Penguin Random House Audiobooks, and the paperback version will be out on the same day, from BMG Books. I recorded the audiobook over the summer at Castaway 7 Studios here in Ventura with recording engineer J.P. Hesser, who was great to work with. The director was Scott Sherratt, who was in New York on a Zoom feed, and we would record for about four or five hours each day. In the audiobook, each chapter begins with a short eight-bar guitar/mandolin intro to the chapter. Dwight Yoakam graciously narrated his beautiful forward. It’s going to be a whole new experience for the listener. How have your musicianship and interests changed over your career? In the last 10 years, I find myself getting more involved with acoustic music. I don’t even own an electric guitar at this point. The last time I was able to plug in and play bass was on the Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour in 2018. Your autobiography came out in November 2020, so clearly part of the COVID-19 shutdown was spent getting that project to completion. What else did you do with yourself during the pandemic? Oh, lots of good things. Actually, I enjoyed not traveling on the road. We have had to continually reschedule concerts that were booked for the fall of 2020. Unfortunately, a few of the performing arts centers have closed forever, which is a very sad result of the shutdown. I spent the beginning of 2020 with the final editing of my book before it went into the first printing. I was fortunate to be able to do all of the in-

terviews for the promotion of the book via Zoom, Skype or telephone, so there was no need to travel down to Los Angeles, as would have happened prior to the lockdown. Things haven’t gone quite back to normal, but they’ve opened up significantly from where we were a year ago. What have you enjoyed the most? What I’ve enjoyed the most is being home, and spending time with my family. You just played two engagements (“Time Between: An Evening of Stories and Songs”) at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center with Herb Pedersen and John Jorgenson, and will be kicking off a tour soon. How long will you be on the road? I really loved playing at the Scherr Theatre [at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center], it is a great venue and everyone was extremely professional and supportive. It was the perfect place to play after the twoyear drought. I have a few shows in November. The remaining dates from the fall of 2020 are now scheduled for the spring of 2022. You’ve been in the music business for more than 60 years and you’ve shown no sign of slowing down. What’s next for the great Chris Hillman? I’m currently finishing the final work on a book that is a collaborative effort with some of my former band mates. Over the winter, I will begin writing my second book. Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Stay strong and healthy, stay positive and keep a strong faith in God. Find tour dates, music, photos and more at chrishillman.com.

ROYA ALT R The director of CMATO seeks to connect the community through art. BY MIKE NELSON | PHOTOS BY VIKTOR BUDNIK
Roya Alt’s appreciation for art can be traced to her formative years in Marina del Rey, when family time often meant a trip to a local art gallery. “The County Museum of Art in L.A., Norton Simon in Pasadena, Huntington in San Marino, Fowler at UCLA — my parents really believed in deepening our family connection by going to museums,” recalls Alt, now in her second year as director of the
recently reopened-to-the-public California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO). “So I’ve always felt connected to art, and when my family and I moved to the Conejo Valley five years ago, I was excited to learn about CMATO, because I saw it as a way to build empathy and community. And now that I’m working here, I feel like I’ve come full circle.”

ON ARTS EDUCATION: “It is central to not only the education but the development of the whole person.”
Alt’s first 18 months on the job have been plenty exciting, and challenging, since they have coincided with the coronavirus pandemic that has forced all businesses and organizations, including nonprofits, to re-think and re-invent how they operate and what they offer. “But throughout my professional career, I’ve worked almost exclusively for nonprofits,” notes Alt, who spent 20 years as senior director of public relations for the city of Hope before coming to CMATO. “And in nonprofits, you encounter all kinds of challenges that excite and frustrate you, depending on how you handle them.” “So it was an interesting time to start my new role,” she continues with a smile. “And I knew we’d have to be inventive and creative.” That meant moving all of CMATO’s exhibitions online, for starters. Likewise for Family Art Day, started in 2019 as opportunities for families to develop both their own artwork around a particular theme, and a stronger connection to one another. Or, as CMATO’s mission statement proclaims, “to enrich and inspire our community through exceptional experiences with the visual arts.” Alt has also overseen the launch of a virtual “artist workshop” series, in which participants receive online education from noted teaching artists, plus an online lecture series. That includes an Oct. 21 introduction to California Impressionism, a central style in CMATO’s current exhibition GIFTED: Collecting the Art of California at Gardena High School, 1919-1956. “And people have responded to what we’ve offered,” Alt says,
with obvious delight. “We’ve even had folks joining our online presentations from England and Canada, which means we’re building a global community for people who want that connection to the arts.” Such responses affirm her own goal of bringing the community together through art. A Los Angeles native and graduate of Westchester High School and UCLA with a degree in Latin American history, Alt is a fierce advocate for arts education, asserting that “it is central to not only the education but the development of the whole person.” GIFTED exemplifies this assertion in a unique way. The extraordinary collection was compiled by more than three decades’ worth of senior classes at Gardena High School, who gifted the school with works of art, amassing what is today widely acknowledged as one of the nation’s outstanding collections of early 20th century California art. “And that happened because students received a good education and appreciation for art,” notes Alt, who wants the same opportunities for all children. “GIFTED is such an important legacy and gift to future generations,” she continues, “because you see what happens when the community prioritizes art. It shows you how arts can tie generations of students to the community. All who come in to see GIFTED spend quite a bit of time; they read every label, and it’s a source of comfort and inspiration, especially now.” During the pandemic, Alt was struck by the images of people in Italy, confined to their homes by the pandemic’s severity, Continued on page 42

stepping onto their balconies and creating music and art for their neighbors to hear and see. “I think COVID brought to the fore how important art is, even if art is not always top of everyone’s mind,” she says. “During that period of social distance and isolation, we read books. We sought out opportunities to be creative, to express our feelings — and, above all, to connect to each other.” That’s one main reason why CMATO is focused on audience participation. With the GIFTED exhibit, for example, participants are invited to contribute via iPad their hopes for the future as they reflect on what the graduates of Gardena High once envisioned. “We want people to do more than look at the work,” says Alt. “We want them to participate in what we do, and so we’ve developed structured opportunities to make that happen, such as the Family Art Days.” Her own family museum visits, Alt believes, encouraged her appreciation for a diversity of styles, from the “Old Masters” like Carravaggio and Van Gogh to more contemporary artists like Frida Kahlo and Marcel Duchamp. She also lists among her favorites a host of women artists — American sculptors Ruth Asawa and Beverly Pepper, French-American painter-sculptor Louise Bourgeois, and modern-day American visual artist Mar-

A private gated courtyard has lush landscaping, Saltillo tile and a beautiful fountain. Enter the house to find two story high wood beam ceilings with many windows that allow for natural light throughout the day. Above the family room is a good size bonus loft that makes a great place to work, read or enjoy the ocean and island views. Having a living room downstairs plus a large family room upstairs provides many options for utilizing the
overall living space. There are two bedrooms, with the master including an en suite bath and pretty views from French doors leading to the back garden. A recent remodel converted the original third bedroom into a large dressing room, which could also be used as an office. This is a very flexible floorplan with possibilities for a new owner to complete a conversion to a three bedroom home. The upstairs view family room, loft and balcony were added in the early 1980s. The two bathrooms are located on the main level. The large guest bath boasts marble floors and a skylight. In addition to the front courtyard, the sunny backyard is hardscaped throughout and provides access to a walkway to the beach! An extensive remodel in

BEFORE THE WILT
Through Jan. 3, 2022 | Ojai Curated by China Adams, the Porch Gallery’s latest show puts in the spotlight the flower: delicate and beautiful, and yet a site of tension between new blooms and old, freshness and decay. A flower serves as both a symbol of the life cycle and a harbinger of doom. The flower simultaneously reminds us of the inevitability of death and, thus, the precious fragility of life. Before the Wilt features colorful, dramatic paintings of plump, fresh flowers by Renee Fox and weathered and windblown ones by Mary Warner. Together, these works bookend the compressed floral life cycle, and hint at a world teetering on the edge of environmental ruin.
