his has been such a strange summer. Businesses reopened, masks came off, a new day dawned . . . and then the Delta variant comes along to tip the scales. If you’re experiencing a bit of vertigo from the ever-changing rules, and perhaps some consternation over the resumption of “normal” activities . . . well, I’m sure you’re not alone. I propose getting back to nature as a way to regain equilibrium. Once place to do just that is Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve. This is a beautiful place indeed, but not your typical botanic garden. Through careful management and limited access, staff are preserving the property so that those who do visit are able to see the garden in all its glory, and thus gain a greater appreciation for its value. Taft Gardens is currently undergoing a renaissance, as it aims to connect with its community in a greater way than before. We talk with CEO Jaide Whitman about the founder’s vision, her hopes for the future, and the “revitalizing” aspect of this unique place in Ventura County in About Town. hen the 26th Annual Ventura Music Festival took place July 23-25, it was one of the most exciting musical events of the summer. While it was shorter and more streamlined than in years past, VMF 2021 was nevertheless an exceptional return to form, with masters of brass, strings, guitar and voice bringing their talents to the stage at the Pacifica High School Performing Arts Center in Oxnard. “The July 2021 Ventura Music Festival should loom forever in their memories of extraordinary music engagements,” said Executive Director Susan Scott of VMF performers Aubrey Logan, Time for Three and Andrea Roberto. “Each artist said as much at the opening of their concert — that our festival was either the ‘first’ or their ‘first major’ live performance after the world’s very long timeout.” String trio Time for Three, in particular, noted the “great audience energy” and declared this year’s VMF their best-ever concert. UNEARTHED Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve comes out of the shadows.

ess than 10 miles west of downtown Ojai, a few miles north of Lake Casitas, and at the end of a paved but narrow two-mile private road in Santa Ana Canyon — away from both the main and not-somain highways — lies a 12-acre oasis of flora, fauna and nature-inspired artwork that, until now, has been mostly hidden from much of the public. These are the Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve, where Mediterranean climate-friendly trees, plants and flowers, mostly of South African and Australian heritage, offer a unique respite to visitors seeking an escape from their problems, pandemic-related and otherwise.
The existence of these rustic, tranquil gardens is a surprise to many because, since its establishment in 1981, Taft Gardens hasn’t trumpeted its presence. It is open to the public, but by advance reservation only — largely out of respect for area residents who live there precisely for its absence of traffic and noise. “We are not a traditional botanical garden,” says Jaide Whitman, president and CEO of the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF), the nonprofit organization that operates Taft Gardens and the 264-acre nature preserve surrounding it. “I call it a sanctuary with limited access to preserve the property as a unique experience.”

(Photo by Brandi Crockett) “And now, we’re beginning a new chapter,” adds the energetic granddaughter of gardens and CEF founder John Taft. “We want to maintain the tranquility of the gardens, but we also want to help the public become more aware of their environment, the inspiration it provides, and their responsibility to protect and preserve it.” To that end, Whitman has led the effort to establish two interrelated programs: —“Art in Nature,” an effort to fulfill a long-standing core mission of the gardens: “Explore the relationship between humans and their environment.” — Artist in Residence, through which a local (Ventura or Santa Barbara County) artist is invited to spend eight months in the gardens’ on-site, day-use art studio, creating new environmental and ecologically-focused works inspired by their surroundings. Together these programs are among the Taft Gardens’ efforts to engage and educate the community, which has much to learn about the environmental treasure in their midst. Thus, as the gardens reopen in September after a month’s hiatus, it may be helpful to first become more familiar with how the gardens grew.
“A S P I R I T U A L A S P E C T ” A nature-lover dedicated to its preservation, businessman John Taft established the Conservation Endowment Fund to house the
Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on 265 acres of his property in the Topa Topa Mountains. “My grandfather created this space in the spirit of an experiential place,” explains Whitman. “He sought unique botanical specimens, but he also wanted to include a spiritual aspect: to look at nature a little differently.” Within a few years of its founding, however, the Wheeler Fire of July 1985 tore through the hillsides north of Ojai and left much of the property bare. Or, as Whitman says with a wry smile, “a blank canvas.” To replenish the land, Taft acted upon his love for South African plant life by inviting noted landscape designer Lawrence Nicklin to relocate from Cape Town. Nicklin, finding Ojai’s climate similar to that of South Africa, planted an assortment of vegetation he knew would thrive. And they have, with the garden populated by acacias, aloes, African daisies and perhaps the largest collection of Proteas (also called sugarbushes) anywhere outside South Africa — no surprise, since Proteas are the national flower of South Africa, representing the beauty and harmony of cultures. In 1992, John Taft’s affinity for Australian vegetation led him to bring Jo O’Connell, one of the world’s foremost horticulturists, from Queensland to Southern California. in Casitas Springs, has brought a host of hardy, drought-tolerant plants to Taft Gardens, notably varieties of Grevillea, a brightly-colored, evergreen flowering plant. Also striking are the Banksia trees with stiff, serrated leaves and seed pods that produce pine cone-like seeds that in turn sprout what look like . . . well, faces. So much so, in fact, that they inspired the character known as “Big Bad Banksia Man” that populates a series of children’s stories by Australian artist May Gibbs. But that’s not all they inspired.
A RT I ST I C O U T R E AC H “I call them Muppet mouths,” grins Cassandra C. Jones, the Ojai-based remix artist who recently concluded her term as Taft Gardens’ first Artist in Residence. “When I came here, I knew nothing about plants, but on my first visit I saw these little seeds with these faces. That provided my impetus for doing art here. And the more I saw in the gardens, the more inspired I became.” Jones’ term resulted in her “Woah and Wonder” botanical series, utilizing digital photo-collage to “reimagine” various plant specimens in her particular style. Beads, balloons, balls and even Slinky toys are reflected in her collages of flowers, trees and cacti. (The barrel cactus is actually a composite of hundreds of tiny beach balls.) But her work also reflected the past and present of the area and, especially, how technology, the changing environment and the pandemic impacted society’s perception, interaction and preservation of nature. Jones was particularly struck by the impact the Thomas Fire of 2017 had on the region (the fire encroached upon but did no major damage to Taft Gardens).

“So much in the way of manmade products was burned and taken into the atmosphere and then fell back to earth,” she says. “As a result, I realized that we’ve dusted the entire planet with nanoplastics; it’s in our air, plants absorb it. That’s an awareness I wanted to share in my work.” Jones’ residency — launched in the dark moments of the pandemic shutdown — was “beyond what I could have imagined,” she says, with obvious delight. “And I ended up leading tours for almost 400 visitors, and learning as much as I shared with them. I loved the interaction; I feel like it had a great impact on what I could create.” Says Whitman, weighing in, “Cassandra not only produced the art, but she totally captured the spirit of what we are about. She speaks to a quiet, spiritual, creative place in each of us, and her skill, personality and desire to connect with people made her the perfect person to begin the residency program.”
A RT I N N AT U R E More recently, Taft Gardens has brought local art into its space in a way that embraces and enhances the nature experience. The first work, located near the beginning of the mile-and-ahalf trail, is the willow-inspired ”Rings of Time,” a hut-like structure made from a 150-foot-high cottonwood tree that was burned by the Thomas Fire. Designed by Jaide Whitman’s architect father Marc Whitman (of Whitman Architectural Design) and built by her friend Tara Saylor, manager of the Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve, the structure, which was moved to Taft from Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens, has inside seating arranged around a “ring table” that illustrates how trees age. Not far away is “Acorn Lamp,” a stone structure with interior illumination, created by Kevin Carman of Art City Studios, which came to Taft last January from the Museum of Ventura County. SOUTH AFRICAN ALOE (Photo by Brandi Crockett) Arte Forastero exhibit, on display in the fall of 2020. “When art draws inspiration directly from nature, the result speaks powerfully to the deepest parts of humanity,” says Whitman. “The symbolism of Kevin’s work speaks directly to our mission.” In addition to artwork and plant life, a walk along the trail often brings visitors into eye contact with animal life — deer, quail, squirrels, egrets and more. A night-cam, adds Whitman, recently caught a black bear and mountain lion coming on to the property, no doubt seeking sustenance in this drier-than-usual year. “We encourage people to take guided tours,” Whitman says, noting the discreet but helpful signage that advises visitors to keep watch for snakes and stay on the trail.
“ F O R E ST B AT H I N G ” In addition to reserving space for guided or self-guided walks, visitors are invited to participate in Nature Immersion Medicine Walks, led by certified nature therapy guide Elena Rios. These guided walks assist participants in relaxing and “deepening one’s awareness of self and surroundings,” says Whitman. “It’s like forest bathing, a wonderful way to take in the intricacies of plants, and open yourself up to experience nature more completely.” As people become more aware of its presence, Taft Gardens continues to expand its offerings, like the new Barrel Cactus Garden, created by John Taft and longtime lead gardener Eduardo Lule. Plans are underway to develop a Native California garden, a rock labyrinth, expand the route for self-guided tours to experience the nature preserve, “and further educate the public on responsible land management.“ Whitman — whose mother Julia Whitman and aunt Jenny Nicklin serve on the CEF board — is proud to continue her family’s work in maintaining what she aptly calls “a hidden gem” of Southern California. “Every day, the garden has new life and death; it offers new gifts for us to appreciate,” she says with a quiet smile. “It’s a revitalizing experience you can’t get anywhere else.”

A Simi Valley estate marries the best of Tinseltown and cultured country living.

any Southern California residents say they chose Ventura County to escape the superfluous glamour of Hollywood. But really, the area represents a perfect medium between the vivid enchantment of the big city and the rustic bliss of rural living. There is perhaps no home in the county which manifests this description more literally than a beautiful farmhouse estate in the foothills of Simi Valley. This property has both the makings of a movie star and the southern hospitality of the countryside. Frequently scouted as a set for films, television shows, and commercials, it encapsulates the two harmonious halves of Ventura County. This four-bedroom, four-bathroom farmhouse sits upon 2.4 acres of flourishing vineyards encircled by a stunning panoramic
view of the mountains. The property’s country road entrance is adorned by pepper trees and leads directly up to the 2,697-squarefoot open floor house. Built in 2006, the house was remodeled last year after being bought by new owners in 2016. These new owners, Jerry and Allie Ester, recognized its superstar potential. They enlisted the help of Ventura’s esteemed Kitchen Places Inc. as well as a location scout. The head designer for this project, Crickett Kinser, worked closely with the location scout in order to ensure everything was presentable for the camera.
T H E E XQ U I S I T E VIEW When driving up to the property, the first thing you will notice is a California hallmark of fine living: lush vineyards that run parallel to the driveway entrance, framed as if the road itself is a support structure for the grapevines. This guarantees fresh wine is always available for the residents. The next thing you will notice is the large wrap-around porch that surrounds the house. The view from the property is incredible. It overlooks the valley and the mountains, and this posh country porch invites you to spend hours sipping crisp wine and gazing into the majestic spirit of Southern California. “The porch was definitely my favorite part,” says the previous homeowner, Allie Ester. “I could spend all day out there just staring at the view.”

SUN AND SKY Vineyards, cypress trees, the rolling hillside and wide open skies gives this Southern California home the feel of a remote country estate.
Though the outside view of the property is immediately enthralling, the interior was not always so. When the Esters first looked at the property, they were taken aback to see that the inside did not match the outside. Whilst the view was all chic farmhouse dream, indoors there was a Mediterranean-style décor that clashed with everything else. So, they decided to remodel it all. The goal was to have both the interior and exterior compliment the beautiful view. “The only thing I didn’t touch was the bathrooms,” says designer Crickett Kinser. “We revitalized the vineyard . . . We wanted a style that was a sweet, southern kind of feel. We wanted the view to be a focal point, so we made it a priority to keep the kitchen open so you could see out the back.” To keep that view unobstructed, the outside needed a little work, too. A gazebo structure in the back partially blocked the vineyards and mountains — so they made sure that was promptly taken care of as well.
A FA M O U S FA R M H O U S E The breathtaking view, however, does not steal the spotlight from the house itself. “We made a point to design everything so that the house could be rented out for movies, commercials, etc.,” confirms Kinser. “I worked with the scout in order to maintain the vision of what I wanted, and he would give me direction on making sure it worked well for film.”
Since the house itself would be a star, certain accommodations would need to be made. Creating something beautiful in person is already a tough job on its own. Creating something that is also beautiful for the camera is another matter entirely. “For example, we picked a certain backsplash that was not shiny because otherwise, the lighting for the cameras would reflect it,” explains Kinser. “The butcher block island in the kitchen has a matte finish. It’s different for the perimeter, the perimeter is a quartz, and the island is a black walnut butcher block.” Another example is the flooring, which is a material called luxury vinyl plank. This material looks like wood but does not scratch. This allows camera crews to move around heavy equipment without risk of damage to the floors. Neutral colors were also intentionally chosen throughout the house. This was done so that when the home becomes a set, it can be easily made to match any set pieces and furniture can be swapped out for whatever vision the director has. “All of the trim, all of the paint and the flooring colors were made really universal so that it could be easily changed out,” says Continued on page 42

WINE AND UNWIND A stylish patio, phenomenal views and a glass of wine produced from the nearby vineyards: The very definition of gracious living.
Kinser. Just in case there is any doubt, the main color of paint used inside the house is known as “Agreeable Grey.” The home could not possibly be more agreeable to a film crew. The upper level is a large loft space, which is connected to the opposite window by a long, convenient catwalk. This feature is loved by the crew members who get plenty of use out of an area that seems almost designed for people holding lights and cameras. Born to be a star indeed. “The director [of a commercial] walked in and immediately said, ‘This is made for filming,’” explains Jerry Ester. “It took two days from when the director walked in for him to sign a contract.” Of course, this was only possible after social-distancing restrictions were beginning to lift. “ Right after we got [the remodeling] finished, we worked with a casting director and got calls immediately,” Jerry continues. “Three or four directors wanted to look at it. Two weeks later, COVID happened. They shut everything down . . . but once things relaxed, we started getting calls again.”
H O M E O F M A N Y TA L E N T S But the upper loft space is not only useful for filmmaking. The second level could be used as a study, a game room, another bedroom or, as Jerry and Allie Ester did, a home gym. It also features a stylish cathedral ceiling. Kitchen Places Inc. works its magic by enlisting local vendors such as Ventura’s TileCo Distributors for the backsplash, Oxnard’s Pacific Shore Stone for the Caesarstone counters, and Ethan Allen for the furniture. Other notable interior features include the chic French doors that, along with the numerous windows, ensure that the interior receives maximum natural light, as well as jetted bathtubs with separate showers, central 8

heating, a living room with a handsome fireplace, and all bedrooms on the main level. Allie Ester is a professional horse trainer who specializes in recuperating old and disabled horses to be ridden again. This certainly played an important role in both selecting the home and remodeling it. An elegant farmhouse is an animal-lover’s dream, and this property was made to shelter livestock. The remodeling process also produced an ultramodern chicken coop complete with an abundance of windows, ensuring that the chickens receive as much natural light as their owners. The Esters sold the house just a few weeks ago. Despite loving everything about it, they would like to find a property where Allie can return to training horses. The home’s new owners immediately fell in love with it, no doubt due in large part to the brilliant remodeling work. What was originally a clash between Southern and Mediterranean styles is now the pinnacle of balance between luxury and bucolic. v

l Capitan Canyon embodies some of the best elements of the Central Coast. Hidden among the trees, yet a short walk to the beach, and surrounded by a network of trails with glorious ocean views . . . you’d be hard pressed to find a finer location that marries the windswept glory of a rocky seascape with the wide-open skies of the bluffs and the sylvan serenity of a forest. The fact that this Eden is a mere 21 miles north of Santa Barbara only adds to the appeal. Surprisingly accessible? Yes! Ordinary? Not in the least.
T H E G R E AT E S C A P E
“Escape to nature” is the tagline of El Capitan Canyon, and it’s a fitting one. Great care has been taken to ensure that guests feel embraced by the surrounding environment. Part of that is due to the property’s “car-free” policy. Once guests have arrived and unloaded at their accommodations (more on those later), they park their cars in one of the designated areas. Unless they are leaving the grounds (for wine tasting, say, or a trip to the grocery store), driving around the resort is discouraged. Which means there’s no engine noise to drown out the sounds of
nature: the wind rustling through the leaves, crickets chittering, squirrels and chipmunks scurrying through the bushes, a symphony of birdsong. When we first arrived around late afternoon on a Wednesday, we were struck by how remote it all felt — even though we had just exited the freeway. The entryway is under a canopy of trees, and the kiosk and office for check-in are housed in charming wood cabins. Helpful staff at the front desk set us up with keys, a map and some helpful hints — all of which proved necessary, as the accommodations are spread out among the property’s 350 acres. We drove at least half a mile up the canyon to reach our destination. Along the way, we slowed to allow some squirrels to cross the road, and marveled at a scarlet-headed woodpecker who drummed noisily on a nearby tree. We also saw a trio of deer — one doe with two adolescent fawns, still small but sans spots — grazing on the hillside. Their tawny coats blended in nearly perfectly with the yellowed grass of late summer; I’m not sure we’d have seen them if they hadn’t been startled by our presence. Later that night, after we’d unpacked and settled in, we explored in the dark by flashlight. Our timing was fortunate: The moon was new, meaning there was little natural light — and no human-created illumination — to wash out the stars overhead. My city-dwelling children (12 and 15) stared open-mouthed at the diamond-studded black velvet of the sky, and were even treated to a few shooting stars that night. Our mornings were equally blissful: comfortably cool (a blessing in August, when the days tend to be oppressively hot) and fresh. This is a good time of day to start one of the

many hikes that originate from the property. Deer and raptors are common sights in the hillsides, and the vistas are unparalleled: sea, sun and sky as far as the eye can see. The trails are hilly and exposed, however, so be sure to wear a hat and sturdy shoes, and bring water. If you linger too long before leaving in the morning, you might be better off waiting until later in the day — once the temperature drops a bit — to hit the trail. Your reward: an evening breeze and an exceptional sunset hike. The coolest place to be during the day is the beach. It’s a 15-minute walk or so to beautiful El Capitan State Beach from the resort entrance. There’s a short stretch along the road — which is not busy — and under the freeway, but then you’ll be able to take the footpath (just for pedestrians!) that winds through the trees before ending at the beach itself. Just as El Capitan Canyon feels like a Shangri-La close to, yet hidden from, the hustle and bustle of Santa Barbara and Goleta, the trail to the beach feels like a walk into the wilderness. When you finally emerge from the bush, you’ll find yourself on picturesque El Capitan Beach. The rocky shore, kissed by frothy waves, begs for exploration. Tide pooling, strolling the boardwalk, or sitting in contemplative peace on the sand are all wonderful ways to pass the time.

Back at the resort, you’ll find a wide range of accommodations and comforts to suit your style. The “simplest” option is the safari tent. A roomy, canvas structure, the safari tent comes equipped with either two doubles or a queen, all bed linens and towels, plus table, chairs, desk and coat

hooks. There’s no running water here, and you’ll have to use the shower and bathrooms at a nearby facility, but your own fire pit, grill and picnic table are wonderful for enjoying the cool evenings. When you retire, it will be in comfort . . . not a sleeping bag. Adventure yurts offer a similar experience (canvas walls, no private bathroom) that’s a step up in luxury. These round structures are situated on a platform, and have a domed skylight overhead for stargazing in bed. They’re also equipped with both a queen bed and a twin day bed with a twin trundle, refrigerator, microwave, ceiling fan and even a space heater. Some are situated in more remote areas of the property, giving you a true sense of getting away from it all. For the ultimate glamping experience, you’ll want to bunk down in one of El Capitan Canyon’s many cedar cabins. They’ve got a design for just about every size group: singles, couples, a small family, larger families, etc. Some are closer to the pool, some are more remote (and much quieter), but all are beautiful, smartly designed and well appointed. For a family of four, we had a bedroom with a king-sized bed, and a surprisingly roomy sleeping loft above with three simple, yet comfy, sleeping pads. All came with linens, and a good rest was enjoyed by all — especially after a full day of playing in the pool and exploring the property. A small kitchen (sink, microwave, refrigerator and coffee pot) and private bathroom added to the ease. Cooking over an open fire is a camping tradition, and one you needn’t give up even when glamping at El Capitan Canyon. A fire pit with attached grate and picnic table outside give you the option of grilling onsite. And if you don’t want to bring your own provisions, you can order a barbecue kit ready-to-go from the Canyon Market. These are filled with everything you need for a delicious dinner for two to four people, and include proteins, sides and a salad, plus wood, barbecue implements, condiments and utensils. Burgers and dogs, marinated chicken, tender ribs and simply divine salmon are among the many options available. Everything is neatly prepped and portioned, ready to throw on the grill — and packed into a sturdy burlap bag, which you can keep. The best part, naturally, is dessert: a s’mores kit complete with handy sticks for roasting marshmallows.

Nestled as you are in the wilderness, it’s easy to forget that civilization is close at hand. But El Capitan Canyon provides many of the same amenities you’d find at a fine resort — just in a somewhat more rustic fashion. One morning, we took a leisurely stroll through the grounds to the Canyon Market. More than just a convenience store, the market is something of a gourmet grocery with an attached restaurant. A wide selection of fine California wines and microbrews are available for sale, as are nibbles like stuffed olives and organic pistachios. There are also great collectibles: sweatshirts, t-shirts and hats; children’s toys; stuffed animals; carved walking sticks; colorful mugs sporting the El Capitan Canyon logo. Seasonally, wine tastings are offered on weekend afternoons. Breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m. and includes egg dishes, pancakes, granola and breakfast burritos — which are enormous and delicious, particularly with the house-made salsa verde. We enjoyed them with excellent coffee, courtesy of Santa Barbara Roast-

Later, we came back for an afternoon snack, and discovered that the homemade pizza is also very good. While we didn’t have time to try the burgers, tacos, salads or sandwiches, I have no doubt that they are equally flavorful. Every Saturday night during the summer, El Capitan Canyon offers live music concerts. Rock and roll, blues, folk, reggae and tribute bands take turns entertaining campers at twilight on the grassy lawn near the Canyon Market. The rest of the time, Mother Nature’s musicians — crickets, birds and frogs — fill the night air. When the temperature rises, guests flock to the pool, located in the center of the grounds. Kids frolic in the water or on the playground next door while parents sunbathe or relax in the shade. It’s both a gathering spot and a place to cool down and wash off ahead of a relaxing evening. Hiking around the El Capitan Canyon grounds is undeniably lovely, but some of the accommodations are pretty far out. Many either bring their own bicycles or borrow beach cruisers provided free of charge to guests, who zip around the property and the beach effortlessly. With almost no vehicle traffic, it’s a safe place for a family ride — just be sure to bring kid-sized bikes, as the El Cap cruisers are sized for adults. Most probably come to El Capitan Canyon to escape the demands of work and modern living. For some of us, however, connecting with family or work is essential. The resort is fully equipped with premium WiFi service, which requires a password (supplied upon check-in) and is very easy to use. If you plan on attending lengthy Zoom meetings or streaming videos, you’ll have to sign up for the “paid” plan, but basic Internet browsing, email, etc. is all accessible free of charge. It worked like a charm for the handful of tasks I had to manage. The one thing not currently available: the Canyon Spa. Due to the pandemic, this oasis-within-an-oasis is on hiatus. But once it’s operating again, count on its massages, facials, aromatherapy and more bring the pampering to your glamping experience.
QUALITY TIME Every moment of our stay at El Capitan Canyon was a delight. I watched as my teenagers allowed themselves to be kids again, exploring the trees, trails and beach with joy and abandon — and completely screen free. We used the pool, especially in the hottest part of the afternoon, but found the grounds and accommodations plenty inspiring on their own. Our grilled ribs and salmon dinners were better than anything we probably would have brought ourselves, and the portions were quite generous — we ended up taking some tasty leftovers home. It was fun to see who could make the “best” s’more . . . and when the chocolate ran out, we were happy to toast up the marshmallows and eat them on their own. Evenings were spent chatting around the fire, with each other and our neighbors in the cabin next door. (We enjoyed the congenial atmosphere, but fear not: There’s plenty of space if solitude is what you’re craving.) Leisurely walks after dark, stargazing and looking for nocturnal critters, were a nightly ritual. Afterwards, we’d gather in our cabin living room and play card and board games before bedding down in sumptuous beds for a good night’s sleep. With just a few weeks before the kids returned to campus, I cherished these moments of quality time as a family. The morning that we had to leave, we hit the Canyon Market for one final, perfectly brewed cup of coffee, served in our recently purchased mugs. A tangible reminder of our glamping holiday? Absolutely! But far from the only thing we came home with from El Capitan Canyon. v

This concert will feature music that spans six decades, performed chronologically, including some songs that Hillman has not played on stage before. Joining him will be Herb Pedersen on rhythm guitar and banjo and John Jorgenson on guitar and mandolin. This concert follows the successful release of Hillman’s critically acclaimed memoir, Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother, and Beyond, and the multitalented artist will read excerpts from the book within the context of select song introductions.
