Gilbert-based developer Blandford Homes donated this new house at Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa.

Blandford Homes Builds ‘Bonnie’s Place’ at Sunshine Acres For 60 years Sunshine Acres has been caring for children, and recently Blandford Homes made caring for a few more kids a possibility. Carol Whitworth’s parents, Jim and Vera Dingman, founded Sunshine Acres in 1954. The children’s home has helped more than 1,690 youngsters since it began, and now, “Aunt Carol,” as she is fondly called, thanks Blandford Homes for donating a new girls’ home, “Bonnie’s Place,” to the growing Sunshine Acres family. “It’s like one of (Blandford’s) beautiful model homes,” Whitworth said of the 6,700-square-foot home. “It’s just amazing and the house parents said it’s so easy to keep up. (Blandford Homes) made it very practical.” There are 10 girls living in Bonnie’s Place, which was dedicated in April, with house parents Fred and Tawny Apuan and their four children, two dogs and seven snakes. The sprawling home is state-of-theart, with homey touches and modern decorative bedrooms with themes of flowers, Paris, music and hearts just for the girls. Bonnie Blandford is a longtime supporter of Sunshine Acres. She brought son, Jeff Blandford, for a tour. “I noticed when we went through the homes, he looked at it much closer than other people did,” Whitworth said. After several questions, Whitworth said Jeff asked what her next need was. Whitworth told him she was turning girls away because there was no room. At that point, Whitworth said, Jeff offered to build the home. “Bonnie was just grinning from ear

to ear,” Whitworth said. “I said ‘Can we name it Bonnie’s Place?’ and she was thrilled with that. She came out even when we were decorating it. We call Sunshine Acres “a miracle in the desert.” We don’t ask, we just pray about it. I just want people to know how much we love the community, because this is a community project. People like Mr. Blandford deciding to come and help us. I think he’s going to do more...he said he wants to do more.” Sunshine Acres takes in children from around the state who are homeless, whose parents are incarcerated, have had challenges with adoption and chronic or terminal illnesses. Programs for the children include counseling, 4-H and equine therapy, choir, chapel, sports, music, arts and crafts. All the funding for Sunshine Acres is by private donations, estates and corporate gifts. Sunshine Acres runs a boutique and donation center and accepts donations year round. Some of the children in the houses are siblings. Kids at Sunshine Acres range in age from 5 to 18. Girls are in separate houses from boys, however, all the children eat together in the central dining room and attend church services on Sunday. The children at Sunshine Acres can stay through college or until they can make it on their own. “We tell them we’re all family, we just have a bigger family than most,” Whitworth said. listing fees through 2014. Thank You! Thank you “View” readers for your enthusiastic response to our 50% commission offer. We’ve enjoyed getting to meet some of you and are looking forward to helping more “View” readers in the future. Jeff and I often get asked, “How’s the real estate market?” Usually followed by “It’s getting better, right?” Sometimes that can be a tough question to answer. If you are selling your home, you want to sell for top dollar in a reasonable short period of time which may not happen if supply is high and demand is weak. If you are a buyer, your goal is to have a lot of choices in many neighborhoods which increases your chances of buying “more” home for a good price. Now, for many of you, either market works because you are selling one home and buying another. Market conditions aren’t a major concern because you will benefit from a good buyer or seller market. The answer to “How’s the real estate market?” becomes very important if you are just selling or buying.

July 2014

In this case we look to market statistics and rely on our experience. Our numbers tell us we are in a market that slightly favors buyers with a good supply of homes and somewhat weak demand. We at the Hershey/Franklin team are experiencing a slightly different trend as most of our listings are selling in less than 30 days. No matter the price range, we are getting them sold! Our last closing was for $2.64 million in Las Sendas that sold and closed in 35 days. The final answer: In any market, use professionals who back up their advice with solid statistics and a track record of proven success! We feel that best describes The Hershey/Franklin Team and we hope to have the opportunity to prove it to you! Remember, work with professionals and take advantage of our 50% commission offer and save some serious money! - Bob Hershey and Jeff Franklin One of Red Brick Realty’s top producing teams!

Staying on Schedule: “I usually fly out on either a Monday or a Tuesday and then I tape nine shows a day Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and I fly back Friday night. It takes a lot of people to keep it all on track...I prefer to do things rapidly because my energy stays up. When I was a municipal judge, I used to arraign 70 people in two hours, so speed is second nature to me.” Loving the Community: Toler moved to Las Sendas in 2007. There is one thing in particular she really enjoys and that is tennis. “I just love the tennis program up here and play as often as I can. I just absolutely love it. I play at the Trailhead...they have a tennis pro up there and they have leagues and it’s just great,” stated Toler. Other Activities: Although she doesn’t venture out to do much sightseeing, she does love to get out and try new restaurants. “I love to go to restaurants because I don’t cook,” noted Toler. She even has a few favorites in the area. “Without a doubt, Sushi Kee. They have the best sushi. I just love that place. D’Vine, too. The food is always good there. It’s just so cool and casual.” Info: For additional information on Judge Lynn Toler, visit www.judgelynn. com. July 2014

By Scott Shumaker Sixteen acres of vacant land at the corner of McDowell and Recker roads are being transformed into a park for hiking and mountain biking during a $692,000 project that began in mid-June. Desert Trails Park, funded by a $70 million 2012 Parks and Recreation bond program, is set to open in November with an official grand opening to follow. The site, covered with native vegetation, has a water tank and a 60-foot knoll in the center of the property. Valley Rain Construction of Tempe is handling the work. The new trail system and skills areas were designed by Alpine Bike Parks, a trail design company with offices in Boulder, Colorado, and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The system features a long multiuse trail circling the park with hiking and biking trails splitting off to other parts of the property including the knoll top. Some of the trails in the system will be single track mountain biking trails restricted to bike riders. The knoll offers opportunities for city views and challenging terrain for trail users. Park designers are utilizing this elevation change for a system of more than 2 miles of multiuse and bicycle-only trails ranging from easy to difficult. Additionally, the park will include separate biking skills and pump track areas.

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

Jaime Otter, a marketing and communications specialist for the City of Mesa Engineering Department, said a focus group indicated that it was interested in a hiking and biking friendly park. Archaeologists who surveyed the site prior to Mesa’s acquisition indicated that residents heavily disturbed a knoll atop the land with informal roads and abundant trash from “recreational drinking.” The park will include restrooms, a ramada and two lookout areas near the top of the knoll with low walls for sitting. Otter said the City wanted to preserve the site’s natural character. “The key thing was to use a lot of the material that was already there,” she said. Otter said that Valley Rain will relocate any plants to other parts of the property that need to be removed. For more information, visit www. mesaaz.gov/engineering. July 2014

By the Mesa View Browns The Prime Time North Mesa’s Mesa View Browns had a remarkable season. Formerly known as The Dolphins, the squad, sponsored by The View, hadn’t registered a loss in two seasons. It entered the state tournament with excitement, and the players’ enthusiasm was matched by a great event held at the Reach 11 Complex in North Phoenix. The Browns played great, but lost in the state title game on a last score from the well-rounded Bears of Scottsdale. Landing second place in the state isn’t so bad. The team is comprised of a bunch of talented little competitors, as well as a good coaching staff and fun and caring parents. A little about the Browns players and coaches: • A literal game-changer, Andrew Hines is a coach’s dream on defense, keeping anything in his area and then some “tackled.” • Ari Kolodny is the team’s quarterback, and possibly the league’s most accurate passer. He plays at a cerebral level. • Brody Balcik keeps the nose locked down and the team’s spirits up, just his second season saw noticeable growth. • Cole Edmonds is an all-around threat, with speed and agility, but most importantly possesses a “feel” for the game, which is a tremendous asset. • Gunner Brewer started the season as a speedy little TD producer and

defensive machine, and ended it as a serious downfield receiving threat. There’s never a dull moment with him on the field. • Kacey Allen was given his nickname of “Joystick” from an opposing coach, who was heard saying, “Will someone please lock that little joystick down?” Need we say more? • Mikayla Allen is as well-rounded as they come, and in the open field, quite possibly the fastest kid in the league, a one-cut wonder. As for coaches, where Aaron Kolodny lacked in preparation, he made up for in cool footwear. When not combing his beard, Coach Ryan Balcik came up with some serious defensive schemes. Coach Jimmy Edmonds was lost due to contract mishandling, but will hopefully be back in the fall if arbitration goes smoothly. Again, the parents were always full of care and fervor. The folks had gusto every single game. Now, watch out for the 5-6 and 7-8 teams, as many kids are moving up. For more information, contact Brett Hieronymus at Prime Time Athletics at (480) 619-7554.

Supervision, Precautions Key to July 4 Fireworks Safety By Tracy House They sparkle, pop, crack and whistle. They create the collective oohs and ahs from the crowd as they light up the sky. Fireworks are time-honored traditions for the Fourth of July, and even the biggest kid enjoys setting them off. But, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Capt. Forrest Smith, public information officer with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, discussed the types of fireworks allowed in the state during the July 4 celebration. There are three tiers of fireworks that become part of the enforcement issue in Arizona: de-regulated novelties such as sparklers, smoke devices and novelties legal for sale and use; permitted “nonaerial” consumer fireworks; and prohibited “aerial” consumer fireworks.

Sparklers, caps, poppers and snakes are novelty items and can be purchased and used throughout the year, Smith explains, because they aren’t really fireworks. Consumer fireworks, such as ground-based sparklers that emit showers of sparks are what are available at the tents and stores. These are the restricted fireworks for use only between Tuesday, June 24, and Sunday, July 6. Finally, the prohibited “aerial” consumer fireworks are the types used in the permitted public fireworks displays only. These include skyrockets and firecrackers that are not allowed by law to consumers. As the tents pop up around the city to sell fireworks, each has to be inspected by the fire department for compliance and receives a permit.

Stores are also required to have a permit to sell fireworks. Mesa fire is encouraging responsible usage of these fireworks, Smith said. Fireworks must be used on personal property. “We tell people use them on the driveway or on an area where there isn’t a great deal of brush or Exercise precaution and always supervise children when using anything flammable. any type of firework this Fourth of July holiday. Tips on Saving on Summer Cooling pasta vixen

mom cents

Summer can be a drain on your energy bills, especially here in Arizona, however there are some things that you can do to offset the seasonal impact on your pocketbook. These DIY projects will help you save on summer cooling costs to keep your home’s temperature down during the hot season. • Add Some Green Around Your Home. Provide natural shade to your home by planting trees and bushes. You especially want shade that falls directly on windows and doors to block the harsh summer sun. This will help to diffuse the heat and keep your home a bit cooler. • Create Artificial Shade. Consider installing awnings above windows that face the sun. Awnings that can be rolled up or down offer the choice of letting in the sun versus keeping the windows in the shade. You can also install rigid awnings photo page

that hang above your windows on a bracket, making it easy to take them down when not needed. • Thermostat Control. Run your thermostat a little warmer through the summer. According to FamilyHandyman.com, you can save from 5 percent to 10 percent on cooling costs for each degree higher than 78 degrees that you keep your thermostat. • Summer Window Treatments. Covering the windows with dark, opaque curtains keeps the light out as well as the heat. Shades come in a variety of designs, so you can still have an attractive window treatment while saving on your energy costs.

• Install Ceiling Fans. Ceiling fans help air circulate through the house. In the summer, ceiling fans should draw the air up. This brings the cool air up from the floor to mix with the room air, keeping the entire room comfortable. • Change Light Bulbs. The standard incandescent light bulb generates a lot of heat. Newer compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, are cooler and don’t use as much energy. Although more expensive than incandescent, the CFLs will save you in the long run by reducing your energy and cooling needs. I’ve found some great deals on CFLs at Costco recently, too.

Smith said there is a public safety message that has to go along with the use of fireworks and reminding the public of these types of hazards is one of the messages that has to be made. Precautions for using fireworks include having some sort of water supply readily available as concerns for fires rise during this time. “Have a hose, but certainly have a bucket of water,” Smith said. “If you run into a dud—you light a firework and it doesn’t go off...we suggest pour water on it. And for the ones that are used, drop it into a bucket of water” before disposing of the fireworks. Another precaution Smith stressed was to never allow children to use fireworks unsupervised. Parents need

to be good role models and use safe practices with children. A safe and family friendly alternative to setting off fireworks is to celebrate with the public. The City of Mesa is sponsoring the Arizona Celebration of Freedom on July 4 in downtown Mesa. The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and will feature Revolutionary War Reenactments. For more information, visit www.azcelebrationoffreedom. org. “We always hit home—leave it to the professionals,” Smith said of the Fourth of July. Tracy House is a freelance writer and editor. It’s July and we’re looking for ways to stay cool, eat lighter and maybe give the slow cooked oven recipes a rest. The heck if I’m going to give up my sweets, though. So what better way to kick off July than with two scrumptious desserts that require very little effort? Watermelon cake is all the rage online these days. I have to admit that I was not a believer

that you could actually frost a real watermelon and decorate it like an actual cake. But you can, if you follow my instructions, and I think you’re going to love it! The second recipe for strawberry pie is an all-American favorite and this recipe really brings out the true flavor of fresh strawberries. I hope you enjoy both! Stay cool and I’ll see you next month.

Watermelon Cake with Whipped Cream Frosting 1 watermelon Fruit for garnish: (1 pint blueberries, 1 pint strawberries, 6-7 Kiwi, 2 cups grapes, 1 large orange) 2 pints whipping cream (or more for large watermelon) 1 small (3 oz) package Jell-O Instant Vanilla Pudding 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar

Cut rind off entire watermelon. Make a slice through the bottom to make a base so it will remain steady on a plate. Cut watermelon the size and shape you want your cake. (A flat top cake is easier to garnish with fruit.) Pack paper towels around the entire watermelon to soak up watermelon

juice. (The dryer the watermelon, the easier it will be to frost.) For the Stabilized Whipped Cream Frosting: For each cup of whipped cream used, add 1 tablespoon of instant vanilla pudding and 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar. For sweeter frosting, add more powdered sugar. Whip together until stiff peaks form. Frost cake with spatula or place frosting in piping bag with large star tip. (I use a 14- or 16-inch piping bag.) Garnish with fresh fruit and slice in wedges. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Pie

1 deep dish pie shell plus 2 teaspoons sugar 6 cups fresh strawberries 1 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3/4 cup cold water 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 heaping tablespoon powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of sugar over pie shell and bake for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. When done, arrange 4 cups of whole strawberries in pie shell, point up. With a small food processor, fork or potato masher, thoroughly puree

remaining 2 cups strawberries and combine with cup of sugar in a medium saucepan. Add lemon juice. Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together cornstarch and water. Gradually stir cornstarch mixture into boiling strawberry mixture. Reduce heat and simmer mixture until thickened, about 5-6 minutes, stirring often. Pour mixture over berries in pastry shell. Chill for several hours before serving. In a small bowl, whip cream and powdered sugar until firm peaks form. Serve each slice of pie with a dollop of whipped cream. July 2014

By Alan Sculley Amos Lee has seen his career take a welcome step forward with his two most recent albums, 2011’s “Mission Bell” and his fifth studio album, “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song,” which was released last fall. “Mission Bell” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard magazine album chart and produced a hit single, “Windows are Rolled Down.” The latest album, meanwhile, debuted at No. 16 on Billboard’s all-genre album chart, hit No. 7 on the Rock Album chart and spent some four months in the upper tier of the Americana Music Association album chart. But Lee doesn’t sound like someone who dwells on chart numbers or album sales statistics. And asked about his success, his thoughts quickly turned to others who helped make things happen. “It makes me incredibly grateful for the fans that I have,” Lee said during a recent phone interview. “It also takes me to the people who work on my team, like management, agents, all the folks, label people. There are so many people that get their hands dirty working these records and trying to help to dig a foundation and keep it solid and build it up from the ground. I’ve been with a lot of the same people from the beginning. So it means a lot to me to have people on my side to share these things with. To me, it’s as much about sharing these moments as it is about having them.” Lee made a big splash when his 2005 self-titled debut CD caught on

commercially, selling nearly 500,000 copies. Tours followed with the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Merle Haggard. His next two albums, “Supply and Demand” and “Last Days at the Lodge,” were well received, but they didn’t match the impressive sales of his first CD. Still, Lee was able to solidify his career, and when he turned his attention to “Mission Bell,” he was ready to try something new. For that album, he brought in Joey Burns of the band Calexico to produce the album and had other members of the group play on the CD. With “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song,” Lee was ready to change up the recording experience once again. This time, he brought in his touring band to play on the album, worked with a new producer in Jay Joyce and used a different studio—Joyce’s newly constructed studio in Nashville. This change fit with Lee’s overall desire to make recording an album a unique experience shared with a certain group of collaborators. “For me it’s about experiencing that moment, whatever that moment is and appreciating it and respecting it for what it is,” he said. Amos Lee and openers Amy Helm and The Handsome Strangers perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at the Mesa Arts Center’s Ikeda Theater, One E. Main St., Mesa. Tickets are $26 to $46. In this fresh retelling of the Biblical story of Noah, “Two by Two” shares that the building of the ark wasn’t his only challenge. By turns inspirational and hilarious, the audience discovers that being chosen by God for great things does not necessarily simplify the daily demands made of a father and husband. Also slated for the 2014-2015 season on the main stage are: “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Menopause the Musical.” The Marquee Theatre will again feature comedies including “Run for Your Wife” and “Caught in the Net” in repertory, followed by “Nana’s Naughty Knickers” and “Love, Sex and the IRS.” A full schedule of tribute concerts on the main stage and Marquee Theatre

will feature returning favorites such as AbbaFab, Piano Man, One of These Nights, Strait Country, Flipside-45, Man in Black and December ‘63, as well as a wide variety of new concerts spanning genres from country to rock to The Great American Songbook. New Year’s Eve will feature two performances of “Rave On—A Salute to the Music of Buddy Holly and the Crickets,” an early bird matinee performance and a later traditional celebration. The Palms’ first children’s theater production will be “The Elves and the Shoemaker” from Dec. 5 through Dec. 28. Two additional children’s theater productions will be announced this fall. All tickets will go on sale Monday, Sept. 2. For more information, visit the theater’s website at www. thepalmstheatre.com, check out its Facebook page The Palms Theatre or call (480) 924-6260.

The Palms Theatre 2014-2015 Schedule • “Two by Two,” Oct. 16 through Nov. 22. • The holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street,” Nov. 27 through Dec. 23. “• Annie Get Your Gun,” Jan. 15 through Feb. 22, based on sharpshooter Annie Oakley’s life. • “Menopause the Musical,” Feb. 26 through March 28. • “Run For Your Wife,” Oct. 9 through Nov. 15 • “Caught in the Net,” Oct. 16 through Nov. 19.

I Have Been Appointed as Trustee, What Do I Do Now? If a parent or loved one died leaving you as the trustee of their revocable living trust, you may be asking yourself, “What do I Kenneth C. Barney do now?” First of all, let me tell you, although serving as a trustee can be very rewarding it can also be a thankless job, as you will most likely be very under appreciated by the beneficiaries you are serving. Secondly, I also recommend that you get help and get it quickly, as there are many important things that must be done to properly administer the trust. As a trustee, you are deemed to be a fiduciary, which means you will be held to a higher standard of care than a normal person would be in dealing with his or her own assets and are to follow your loved one’s instructions as to how such assets are to be used and distributed. There are many tasks, duties, responsibilities, complexities and pitfalls that a trustee should know while administering a trust. It would be impossible to list and outline all such items in a short article, therefore, the following are merely bullet points of things to be aware of and is not meant to be an all inclusive list of tasks or concerns: • Hire proper legal representation to help you understand the terms of the trust and inform you of your duties and responsibilities; • Gather and protect assets immediately, do not let items “walk July 2014

mom events cal.

away” from the home during funeral services or other family events; • Legally take over as trustee, signing an acceptance of trustee document; • Notice beneficiaries of the trust within the statutory time; • Create and sign a new certificate of trust; • Obtain a new tax identification number for the trust, if necessary; • Prepare a full inventory and appraisement of trust assets; • Identify nontrust assets and determine if a probate is necessary; • Work with a CPA to make sure all required tax returns have been filed; • Identify and deal with creditors of the decedent’s estate; • Prepare and submit trust accounting to trust beneficiaries; • Obtain receipt and release documents from beneficiaries acknowledging that they have received what they are entitled to from the trust. Lastly, my best advice to you is to make sure you always properly communicate with the beneficiaries, periodically informing them as to the status of the administration, answer questions, and seek their advice and recommendations when appropriate. Kenneth C. Barney is a partner with Rowley Chapman and Barney, whose practice is limited to family based estate planning, tax planning, probate and trust administration and guardianship matters and can be reached at (480) 833-1113.

Diane Hopkins grooms frequent canine client, Charlie. Razzle Dazzle Pet Grooming is also happy to groom cats.

Diane Hopkins took over ownership of Razzle Dazzle Pet Grooming in August 2013, but she continues to cater to East Valley pet owners who have pooches who want to be pampered and preened. “Basically, I do all aspects of grooming,” said Hopkins, who took over the business when the former owner died. “A basic groom includes the bath, brush, nails, ears, haircut and toenail trim. I also do walk-in nail trims and those are $5 each.” She can do tooth-brushing, but full cleanings she leaves to veterinarians. “Bad teeth and gums can lead to other issues, just like in humans.” Prior to her dog-grooming career, Hopkins worked in a hospital for about 17 years. She became burned out and found her canine calling much more to her liking. Hopkins has been grooming dogs for 10 years.

NEW!

Doing In-office Blood Draws!

She’s always open to trying something new that will bring benefit to her clients. “My shop is all about safety,” she continued. “First and foremost is safety for the animal and then for the groomer. I prefer not to use a muzzle except if it’s completely necessary.” She prefers to use a regular collar, if needed. She said dogs remain calmer that way. But Hopkins’ business isn’t strictly for canines. Hopkins is happy to groom cats, too. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Razzle Dazzle Pet Grooming is located at 6017 E. McKellips Rd., Suite 107, at Recker Road. Call (480) 772-1872 for additional information or to book an appointment. Be sure to ask about monthly specials that range from free nail grinding to free moisturizing conditioner.
