Red Mountain Mountain Lions Head Coach: Ron Wisniewski 2013 Record: 6-6 Red Mountain High School 7301 E. Brown Rd., Mesa, 85207 www.redmountainfootball.com The Red Mountain Mountain Lions enter 2014 looking to get over the quarterfinal hump, coming off of three consecutive quarterfinal losses, including last year to eventual state champion Mountain Pointe High School. Head coach Ron Wisniewski’s Mountain Lions failed to have a record better than .500 in 2013 for the first time in his four-year tenure, but made a strong push in the playoffs by upsetting No. 8 Highland High School 34-7 in the first round. Wisniewski’s 2014 squad features a couple of talented returning players that could help lead the Mountain Lions to the playoffs once again. Six-foot-5 defensive lineman Xavier Davis will lead the pass rush and was ranked as the No. 62 prospect for the 2015 graduating class by The Arizona Republic. Wisniewski said Davis is a top-25 player and could have an

impact at the collegiate level. Davis had 4.5 sacks and tied for the team lead with nine tackles for loss last season. Another key returning player for Red Mountain will be running back Kiwan Lear. Lear led the offensive attack with 596 all-purpose yards and three rushing touchdowns. Though the Mountain Lions have a strong foundation on offense and defense with Davis and Lear, they will need to seek new breakout players at quarterback and wide receiver if they want to match their offensive potential from previous years. Last year, Mountain Lion seniors Brennan Dobson and Caleb MurrayThomas combined for 2,158 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, which will be tough production to replace at the quarterback position. Their wide receiver core also consisted of mostly seniors with the top four receiving yard earners having graduated. Wisniewski must try and create a new winning formula for 2014, but he has been able to mold great players in the past such as NFL wide receiver Malcolm Floyd. Red Mountain will begin its season on Aug. 29 against Pinnacle and its schedule also includes football powerhouses Brophy College Prep (Sept. 19), Chaparral (Sept. 26) and Desert Ridge (Oct. 17). expensive homes

listing fees through 2014. Thank You! Thank you “View” readers for your enthusiastic response to our 50% commission offer. We’ve enjoyed getting to meet some of you and are looking forward to helping more “View” readers in the future. Jeff and I often get asked, “How’s the real estate market?” Usually followed by “It’s getting better, right?” Sometimes that can be a tough question to answer. If you are selling your home, you want to sell for top dollar in a reasonable short period of time which may not happen if supply is high and demand is weak. If you are a buyer, your goal is to have a lot of choices in many neighborhoods which increases your chances of buying “more” home for a good price. Now, for many of you, either market works because you are selling one home and buying another. Market conditions aren’t a major concern because you will benefit from a good buyer or seller market. The answer to “How’s the real estate market?” becomes very important if you are just selling or buying.

August 2014

In this case we look to market statistics and rely on our experience. Our numbers tell us we are in a market that slightly favors buyers with a good supply of homes and somewhat weak demand. We at the Hershey/Franklin team are experiencing a slightly different trend as most of our listings are selling in less than 30 days. No matter the price range, we are getting them sold! Our last closing was for $2.64 million in Las Sendas that sold and closed in 35 days. The final answer: In any market, use professionals who back up their advice with solid statistics and a track record of proven success! We feel that best describes The Hershey/Franklin Team and we hope to have the opportunity to prove it to you! Remember, work with professionals and take advantage of our 50% commission offer and save some serious money! - Bob Hershey and Jeff Franklin One of Red Brick Realty’s top producing teams!

By Meghan McCoy An interest that began at age 5 about Davy Crockett recently blossomed into a book that shares the story of a real person, a man Mesa resident Terry Green believes has been forgotten—William Patton. “He went with Crockett to Texas and he has been forgotten by everyone,” he said about Patton, the nephew of Crockett. “This book is very important for me. I hope to have a small voice for William Patton.” In the 1950s, when Davy Crockett portrayer Fess Parker was introduced to the nation, Green became interested in the Alamo. That interest, paired with Crockett, led the Mesa resident of more than 15 years into further researching the topic for his fiction book, “The Shadows of Great Men.” “I am convinced he was at the Alamo and believe his name should be among those who fought there,” he said of Patton.

The book was a 10-year process. After having a stroke in 2011 and retiring from his job, Green delved deeper into his project. Green, who worked in newspapers, as a teacher and as a seminar facilitator, even received information from the Alamo Library. “I love research. I think it’s fun. I don’t think it’s boring at all,” he said. Green said although the names are real, the story is fiction. The story shares Patton’s journey to Texas, his relationship with his uncle and his fight in the Texas Revolution. The novel sheds light on doubts and fears and the evolution of a man. He said that when he began writing the book, he thought he knew a lot about the Texas Revolution, but was pleasantly surprised when his knowledge for the subject expanded. “It was a wonderful process,” Green

said. “It was long and hard, but ultimately very satisfying.” Although “The Shadows of Great Men” is his first physical book, he published an e-book on Amazon. “I’ve been writing all of my life,” Green said. He has begun brainstorming his next book, which will share the story of his great-grandfather and his service during the Civil War.

East Valley Church Invites Community to Attend Ministry Fair Love of Christ Lutheran Church (LOC) is inviting the public to attend its annual open house and ministry fair to gain awareness of the church’s program in an atmosphere of food, fun and games for kids. The fair will be held on the church campus in the Center of Compassion (COC) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17. Families are encouraged to attend the contemporary service an hour before at 9 a.m. “There are so many influences pushing families in different directions these days,” said Senior Pastor Don Liles. “Kids face more temptations and thus more questions than ever before. Our

doors are always open to help people rediscover church, and we offer great programs for kids.” Booths staffed by church volunteers ring the inside of the COC auditorium that will display many of LOC’s available programs. More than 25 ministry areas will be represented including youth, women and men’s ministries along with opportunities to help serve in the community. For more information about the fair, call (480) 981-6199 or visit www. loveofchristchurch.net. Love of Christ Lutheran Church is located at 1525 N. Power Rd., between Brown and McKellips roads, in East Mesa.

ONe TRUe LOVe Feeds People and Spreads Love By Lynette Carrington ONe TRUe LOVe is literally taking its message and good deeds to the streets. The Mesa-based nonprofit focuses on feeding the homeless and providing support and love in a nonjudgmental and positive way. Ann Cabano co-founded the organization with Krysten Aldridge in December 2010, and they filed for their nonprofit status in January 2013. Each month, the organization feeds the homeless and uses a donated food truck to cook and pass out hot meals along with other in-kind donations. “We have an angel sponsor right now who is sponsoring the rental of food trucks,” said Cabano, a Mesa resident. “Last time, we had a food truck company donate one. We’re working toward getting our own food truck. That’s our main focus right now.” They set up food distribution at 12th Avenue and Madison Street by the Central Arizona Shelter Services building, where many homeless folks congregate. “The way we get the word out is through our big mouth, face-to-face and any way we can... Facebook and our website, too.” In June ONe TRUe LOVe made 450 hamburgers on the “Spice It Up” food truck and passed them out with the added assistance of the vehicle’s staff. “Every time we go out there, there’s a crowd,” Cabano noted.

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

Chris Paciora, who owns Spice It Up, said it was “fantastic.” “It was eye-opening, first of all,” Paciora said. “ONe TRUe LOVe was very organized, and the quality of their volunteers was outstanding. Krysten and Ann are fantastic people. All four of the people in our family participated and maybe, by us leading the way, other food trucks will take notice and get involved.” Unconditional love and hugs are part of the organization’s recipe. “This is about love, connecting with people and seeing people,” Cabano said. “We’re just not affiliated with a church. We hug people, talk to them and have conversations. People are people, and anyone could be one paycheck away from suddenly having to make a tough decision.” The way that the organization name reads with the small ‘e’ has significance. “I wish I could tell you there was some fascinating story, but it’s evolved into so much,” Cabano said. “Little ‘ego’ is one of the things it means and getting that out of the way so we can unconditionally love others. People see our logo and they remember that. It’s kind of like a signature.” For more information about the group, visit www.onetruelove.org or join its Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/ONeTRUeLOVe. Movement or call (480) 209-4355. By Kellie Coppola Exercise is one of the main ingredients of healthy living, but equally as important as physical strength is a proper balance of mind, body and soul. One of the surest ways to achieve inner harmony is by helping others and giving back to the world around you. That’s why Orangetheory Fitness Regional Developers and East Valley franchisees Becky and Travis Renner teamed up with the nonprofit ReturnHope International to build a fresh water well in Bugiri, Uganda. ReturnHope International is a Christian-based initiative with the mission to return hope to the world, one town at a time. With a personal connection to the nonprofit (Travis’ brother is the founder), the Renners took the call to serve to heart, and launched a

fundraising initiative within the Dana Park Orangetheory Fitness studio. The studio quickly raised the $7,000 required to build a fresh water well. The Renners then made the trek with ReturnHope to a remote area of the poverty-stricken nation to build the well and meet the Ugandan people directly impacted by its creation. More than 3.5 million people die every year from preventable diseases caused by drinking contaminated water. This single well will save hundreds of lives and prevent women and children from having to walk two or more miles each day to fetch disease ridden water from a natural water source. “It was an amazing experience to meet and connect with the families who will benefit from this well,” said Becky Renner, who will open the

Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals Important

By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure pupils are walking through those doors healthy, it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations. Dr. Jessica Regnaert, a family practice physician with Banner Health Group, offered some timely suggestions for keeping the kids healthy. Beginning with students just starting out in kindergarten, Regnaert said, “It’s very important, especially prior to starting kindergarten, to make sure that they’re up-to-date on their immunizations and safe when they go back to school.” Regnaert recommended parents

schedule physicals early in the summer or even have annual physicals around a child’s birthday to keep him or her on a yearly schedule and to avoid the summer rush on sports physicals. The crucial ages to be sure children are up-to-date on immunizations are around 4 and 5 years old or kindergarten age; 10 and 11 years old; and students who have graduated high school and are off to college. “College, especially living in dorms, can be places where a lot of germs are spread.” Schools require students to have updated immunizations. “Looking at it from the school’s perspective, they’re just trying to protect all their kids and make sure that something doesn’t spread through the school.”

For uniform shopping, think outside the uniform shop. Old Navy, www.amazon.com, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Target and others offer uniform options that are almost always cheaper than the uniform shop. Just make sure that the items fit the criteria of the school before purchasing.

supplies. They are offering new deals every week, so you never have to pay full price.

Supplies Before you start shopping, make a list of what you need. Search your house for any items that you can reuse from prior years. Don’t buy anything that isn’t on your list and never pay full price. There are plenty of sales going on all month on everything you will need.

4

Clothes Shop secondhand as much as possible. Check thrift shops, consignment stores and even yard sales for clothes. Shopping online can also save you when you use coupon codes (www.savings.com is a good resource) and cashback sites like www.ebates.com. Look for a sale and free shipping before making a purchase. With in-store shopping, use coupons on top of current sales

Although you will find great deals at the office supply stores, don’t get everything there. Shop retail stores, like Target or Walmart, as well as the drugstores for school

Books Do comparison shopping before purchasing books (try www. BookFinder.com). Purchase used books whenever possible or try renting textbooks that you know you won’t need in the future. Try www.TextBookRentals.com to compare prices and learn about different rental companies.

By Laurie Struna, Mesa Public Schools Red Mountain High School’s first home varsity football game is 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, against the Pinnacle Pioneers. It will set the stage for the anticipated reveal of their newly rebranded stadium. Delivering a Unique Message Staff, students, parents and community worked together to rebrand the stadium and capture the culture, values and expectations that are reflected throughout the school. More than a year ago, Jim Gowdy, athletic director at Red Mountain High School, brought together representatives from each athletic team to collaborate on ideas. Troy Dominy, the graphic designer responsible for bringing the “Man Up” and “Wow Factor” branding to Arizona State University athletics, was hired to take the school’s core values logo— courage, respect and influence—and make it visually appealing to promote the message to all students. Dominy shared, “A legitimate movement has to be visual, eyecatching and have deeper meaning. I wanted to give Red Mountain a strong and bold logo that complements the school’s current branding. It needed to feel a bit like a warrior or athlete who’s returned from battle.” The result is a simple, tribal-style mark—a symbolic mountain shape. The final touch incorporates a lion scratch into the logo to bring an intimidating factor for opponents and

embody a characteristic that students take pride in. The Red Mountain Experience When fans step into the stadium, they will experience the respect movement. Sitting in the stands football, soccer and track and field enthusiasts will see the new Red Mountain logo, along with #GO LIONS and www. redmountainfootball.com. A new black color scheme replaces the faded red and is meant to impress. “We want our stadium to have a unique feeling that is evident as soon as you buy a ticket and walk into the venue,” Gowdy said. “We experienced similar success last basketball season after a gym rebranding project was combined with floor renovations.” Additional Renovations Red Mountain Football Association raised more than $15,000 for a new score board with panels dedicated to contributors and state championship year designations. During the summer, the concession stands underwent extensive renovations as part of a voterapproved bond sale. Updates to both home and visitor facilities at the six Mesa Public Schools high schools, include new sinks, water systems that meet health code standards, bathroom improvements, new windows, shaded extensions on the roof of the buildings and the addition of air conditioning.

Setting Teens Up for Success Teenagers get a bad rap. They’re frequently characterized as emotional, defiant and disrespectful, sources of gray hair and frazzled nerves. Eva Dwight In reality, proactive parenting that sets kids up for success can fill those teen years with fun opportunities for connection on increasingly deeper levels, as the youngsters take bigger and bigger steps toward adulthood. It’s easy to assume that, because teens look more grown-up, they need less parental involvement. Actually, adolescence is considered a “critical stage” in brain development, during which children acquire increased abilities for understanding cause/ effect, time management, future planning, etc., but need guidance in pasta vixen

putting that understanding to practical use. Chemical changes in the brain cause adolescents to be less in control of emotions and more likely to take risks. Social pressures abound, school gets harder...How can parents help teens navigate such a rocky life stage? Connection before correction is a great rule of thumb. There will be times when you’ll need to address a problem with your teenagers’ behavior or attitude. If you have a respectful, loving relationship, these challenging moments will be blips on the radar rather than looming catastrophes. Even if your children act like they don’t want you around all that much, eat together several times a week and talk about your day. Play a game or watch a show together at least once a week. Do chores and laugh as you complain about them together.

Stay involved in your children’s schoolwork. Go to open houses. Check grades online weekly with your teens and help them contact a teacher about getting extra tutoring when needed. Establish each evening what homework they have and stay near while they completes it, then confirm that it’s finished and put away, ready for turn-in. Make binder/backpack cleanout a weekly, together-time activity for strengthening organizational skills. Know where your children are, and make sure there is adult supervision. Either call ahead to speak to the friend’s parents about supervision, or knock on their door for a quick meet-and-greet when you drop your children off. Your teens will roll their eyes at you, but they’ll get over it. Keep ‘em busy. Sports, clubs, volunteer work, church groups—all provide chances for teens to build independence and responsibility muscles in structured, supervised

environments that stress positive values. Be firm, be consistent but be open to discussion. Children need practice advocating for themselves and creating logical arguments. Give them that opportunity and be open to changing your mind if they produce a reasonable plan that allows for independence and ensures safety. Allowing teens to step into the pilot’s seat while you play copilot, provides important practice in using adult thinking skills, while still giving you access to the controls. Proactive parenting with a foundation in a mutually respectful, loving relationship will be the lighthouse that guides you and your children through the rocky waters so you both look back at those teen years with a smile and exclaim, “That was fun!” Eva Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings. It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins. The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category. Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish. This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Out fell a sheet of paper and along with it the memory of Tucsonan Selina Ramos, who had emailed me about her family’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad recipe. Her note mentioned that it’s

perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic Southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination. Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat. In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.

Selina’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 large fresh ears of corn 1 poblano or hatch chili, chopped fine 1 large jalapeño pepper, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup chopped jicama 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin (about 7 onions) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped fine Juice of 1/2 lemon (or juice of 1 large lime) 1 teaspoon garlic salt or sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step. Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper. Serve warm or chilled. August 2014

Nickel Creek Celebrates Reunion, 25 Years By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Nickel Creek’s Sean Watkins, Sara Watkins and Chris Thile knew they had something special. After a long hiatus, the Watkins siblings and Thile came together at the latter’s apartment to write a few songs, for maybe an EP. “It was really comfortable,” said Sean Watkins, via telephone from his tour bus that was traveling through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The EP turned into the full-length collection “A Dotted Line,” songs from which the band will perform on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Mesa Arts Center “The reason it turned into a record and tour is because it was so comfortable and easy. We stayed really close over the years and hung out with each other a lot—not officially, but here and there,” Watkins said.

Not only is “A Dotted Line” Nickel Creek’s first album since 2005, it celebrates the California-bred acoustic trio’s 25th anniversary. “I don’t know how it came up, but this year is our 25th year as a band,” Watkins said. “We started when we were really young. O

n the outside I was perfect, even commended: perfect wife, perfect mom, and perfect friend. Still, on the inside, I was in prison. I don’t know how else to describe what I was feeling. No matter how hard I tried to be good, it was never enough. I listened at the church I attended, trying to hear all the things I needed to do so I could be good enough. “I just need to try harder,” I’d convince myself. I shared with a friend how I was feeling, and in return, I got a blank stare. I was feeling so alone. All of the things I was taught to do―and boy, there were a lot of things―I did them, but I still felt empty. I wanted so badly to please God, but on the inside, I was wasting away. I felt like God still wasn’t happy with me. I wasn’t happy with me. I hid behind my smile and I was suffocating. No matter how hard I tried to be good enough, I just wasn’t; there was always some failure glaring at me in the mirror. I found myself being driven to places that I shouldn’t go. I just wanted to medicate my emotions. But then, one day, I opened up the Bible. I don’t know whether I was trying to appease God, or if I was trying to find out what I was doing wrong and what other hoops I could jump through in order to be a good person, but I began to read the Bible in secret. And do you know what I found? Freedom. I have read Romans chapters three through eight 20 times now. It’s like this great big secret that no one in my world is talking about, and it’s right there staring me in the face. The answer: Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart 20

August 2014

from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,” (Romans 3:20-22)

And I find the same message in 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, Ephesians; it’s everywhere in the New Testament! I’m not the first one to try and be good enough by my behavior; and I’m not the first to fail at it. No one can do it. We are all destined to fail at being good enough on our own. But there is hope; there is a righteousness that I can have. It’s the one that comes simply by faith in Jesus. He did it all for me. He was perfect. That was the point. He was perfect, but He died like a sinner, so that even in my sin I am made perfect in Christ. Until now, I had seen and heard stories of people being rejected by the church and their families, because they weren’t good enough. And if the church rejected them, then certainly God was also rejecting them. So then I had thought that God must also be rejecting me, or He was getting ready to. But the Bible gave me a different message; God loved us while we were still sinners. Now goodness is easier, since it’s not a chore. When I learned that God has grace for me, I finally began to have grace for myself. I have since found a church that teaches the Bible and its message of grace, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I still go to church every week. I try to be a good mom, a good wife, and a good friend. But now, things are different; the smile on my face is finally coming from the inside. I don’t have to hide anymore. Living Word Bible Church www.livingwordonline.org

Divorcing Parents—Avoid Alcohol Abuse, Illegal Drugs or Excessive Prescription Drug Use If you as a parent have filed for divorce or are seeking sole or equal decision making of your minor children, the court Paul S. Rowley must decide what is in the child’s best interests, if you and your spouse cannot agree. If your spouse alleges you abuse alcohol or drugs, most likely the court will require you to be drug tested. Usually, this is a urine test but could also include a hair follicle test. Hair follicle testing can detect drug usage as far back as 90 days, whereas a urine test only detects drugs in the past week or so. If you are ordered to do a hair follicle test and you shave your head or body hair it will be impossible to test and it will look like you have something to hide! At least 1 1/2 inches in length is required for testing purposes. If you have used drugs in the past few days you could test positive in the urine test and negative in the hair follicle test. Recently we have been seeing parents who abuse opiates and prescription pain medication, like vicodin or percocet. Methamphetamine is also commonly detected. Even if you take a diet weight loss medication, it could show positive for amphetamine. Alcohol and marijuana are also detectable in a urine test. So if you are a parent, whether divorcing or not, if you use alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines,

barbiturates, opiates, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine, propoxyphene or cocaine and your fitness to have custody of your children is questioned, the use of any of these drugs can trigger a loss of legal or physical custody. Also, if you test positive the court may require you to test randomly for several months until you are free and clean of drugs in your system. My advice: • Avoid all drug use unless it is prescribed by a physician and you take it as prescribed. • Never drink and drive. • Never abuse drugs and drive. Several states have legalized marijuana use, but if you are trying to keep custody of your children, being under the influence of legal marijuana is not a great defense when it comes to the “best interests” of your child. Salon Escape is a Departure from an Average Salon biz spotlight

A fabulous haircut and a day of pampering are just minutes away in East Mesa. April Smith, Salon Escape’s owner, was given an opportunity to relocate from Higley Road and Southern Avenue to a larger space with a private aesthetician room at Brown and Recker roads in April. Salon Escape now boasts much more room to be pampered. “We went from 300 square feet to 975 square feet, which isn’t huge, but for us it’s great,” Smith explained. “We do hair, nails, permanent makeup, facials, waxing and hair extensions...pretty much full service. Most of our customers have followed us over.” The salon offers expert cuts, color, perms, color corrections, deep conditioning treatments and Brazilian blow-outs. It features the Paul Mitchell on the town

hair color line. Nail services include acrylic nails, gel nails, manicures, pedicures and some artistic nail art. As for facials, Salon Escape takes a completely personalized approach. “We pretty much customize each facial according to what the client’s needs are,” Smith stated. Whether it is a facial that requires deep cleansing, micro-derm or a high-frequency treatment, each client will get exactly what they want. Smith said the atmosphere is comfortable at the salon. “I really want to take our time with our clients,” Smith said. “A lot of our clients have been coming to me for 13 years...I’ve been doing nails that long.” The staff includes four stylists, three nail technicians and three aestheticians. Services are available seven days a week. events calendar
