Caring for a Feathered Flock: Three tips for Raising Chickens as Pets

An antidote to the stresses of work and the fast pace of modern life may be closer than you realize. Whether on family farms or in urban backyards, chickens have the power to make your corner of the planet better.

Not only does raising chickens provide you with access to eggs for a tasty, nutritious and versatile food source, it also allows your family to be more selfsufficient, reduce your food miles and establish a family hobby that allows you to connect with one another. Here on the Central Coast our climate provides a perfect opportunity for our feathered friends to join in the many beautiful days of sunshine!

“Chickens make wonderful companions and are often an overlooked option when a family is seeking the countless social, cognitive, physical and emotional benefits of pet ownership,” said Dr. Tanya K. Bailey, a pet therapist and creator of Pet Away Worry & Stress, a program that celebrates the healing connection between humans, animals and nature. “The fact is, many backyard chicken owners view their chickens as lovable household pets that contribute to their family’s sense of well-being.”

Before you bring your own flock home, consider these tips for raising chickens successfully:

Food

You may think of chickens as grain-eating vegetarians, but they’re actually

omnivores with a diverse diet. Most chickens eat insects, as well as herbs, fruits, vegetables and grains. Experts recommend having enough food available for chickens to graze throughout the day, but a single daily feeding is usually adequate. A specially designed chicken waterer can help ensure your hens always have a supply of clean water, but some prefer a trough-style waterer instead.

Housing

Chickens require room to roam, but they also need protection from predators and the weather. The most common setup for chicken housing involves an enclosed coop and a secure area where they can wander freely. Plan to secure several square feet of space per chicken to avoid crowding. The coop you need will depend on many factors, but a versatile option like the Eglu style chicken coop is suitable for flocks of varying sizes. It provides housing for up to 10 large hens or 15 bantams with a low-maintenance design and hygienic, comfortable habitat. You can also DYI a chicken coop to fit your space and the size can be based on your flock

Health

It’s important to keep a close eye on your chickens’ health and safety. Proper housing and routine cleaning are keys to deter predators and prioritize hygiene to help minimize illnesses. Just like other pets, chickens require sufficient exercise and stimulation to maintain good health, which you can provide with foraging activities.

Family Time

Spending time together with your chickens can be uplifting and give your family bonding time. It can also give your children an opportunity to take care of and be responsible for a living creature.

If you’re considering a new pet, chickens make for a lovable, economical option. Find more advice for raising a feathered flock at omlet.us. 

Seven Steps to Start Growing Produce at Home

Growing your own produce is an all-around smart practice, from the money you’ll save at the grocery store to the contributions you can make toward a cleaner planet.

Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your at-home garden:

1. Select a perfect spot. You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily, where erosion and other pitfalls (including hungry wildlife) won’t be a problem.

2. Choose between ground and containers. There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.

3. Understand the importance of quality soil. You may think any dirt will do, but keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or aged manure all help improve soil quality.

4. Keep water close. Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water when the soil is dry about an inch below the surface.

5. Plan for plenty of sun. A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.

6. Consider what you’ll grow. Starting with veggies you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. Plant according to a calendar. Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

Water Smart Gardening for the Central Coast

Explore beautiful sustainable, climate-appropriate and drought tolerant plants, trees and grass that thrive in coastal counties. Add your favorite plants to and make a list that you can print and bring to your favorite nursery.

Sustainable Gardening Tips

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.

Water Saving Tips

Learn how to use the various features of your irrigation controller.

If you’ve lost the instruction manual for your irrigation timer, find and download a replacement from the Internet.

What Time of Day Should I Water?

In Santa Cruz County, we recommend watering between 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. Watering within this window of time takes advantage of relatively low winds and less loss of water to evaporation.

How Long Should I Water?

Precise watering times vary depending on the type of watering device, soil, slope and plants. Keep in mind with clay soils, running an irrigation system on a lawn for more than five minutes will generally result in runoff.

How Often Should I Water?

Summer

No more than 2-3 times per week.

Fall

No more than 1-2 times per week.

Spring

No more than 1-2 times per week.

Winter

Usually not needed. 

Vegetable Gardening with Containers

Getting started with vegetable container gardening is fun, rewarding and not complicated. It is an easy project with a delicious reward. All you need is plants or seeds, a container, some good potting soil, fertilizer, and plenty of sun and water. Growing vegetables in containers doesn’t need to take a lot of time, but it does require that you pay a certain amount of attention to your plants, usually on a daily basis.

There are lots of advantages to growing vegetables in containers. For people with limited outdoor space, growing vegetables in containers may be the only way to go. But even people with a large yard should consider it. There’s no weeding, less chance of soil-borne plant diseases, and critters are less likely to be able to eat your vegetables. Also, many people simply have bad soil for gardening, and you can buy a variety of soils that enhance the growth of your container garden.

One of your first decisions will be whether to buy seedlings or start your vegetable plants from seed. Seeds are very inexpensive and can be fun if children are helping. Watching the seed sprout every day really teaches about growing your own food. You can sow your seeds indoors, usually in late winter or early spring, depending on the kinds of seeds you are planting. Buying seedlings are easy and give you a head start on growing your own veggies.

You can grow almost any vegetable in a container. Herbs are always a good one, as well as tomatoes, lettuce, and many more. To decide what you are going to grow, think about what you like to eat. Vine vegetables, such as watermelon, pumpkin, and cantaloupe obviously might not be such a good idea. There is nothing better to eat in the world than fresh picked vegetables that you grew yourself.

Choose your vegetables, buy supplies, and get started on your very own container garden and get ready for your harvest! 

Create Beautiful, Inviting Outdoor Spaces

With all the beauty the Central Coast has to offer, a few pops of color or other simple embellishments can help make your yard look superb

Whether you’re looking to enhance your front yard, backyard, porch or patio space, consider these easy and affordable ways to spruce up your outdoor oasis:

Add Mirrors

Just as they do indoors, mirrors can open up small patio spaces and make areas feel larger. Use mirrors made with resin or other waterproof materials so they won’t be compromised when exposed to the elements.

Make Bold Statements

Plant your favorite flowers in a giant, bright colored pot, hang a bright colored swing with multi colored toss pillows. Just a little dab of color can make a statement and brighten the whole space.

Hang It Up

Place hanging baskets around the porch to bring punches of color to your outdoor sanctuary. With the freedom to pick and choose your favorite plants and flowers, these baskets have the added benefit of easy maintenance.

Consider Time When Planting

If you wish to add color to your landscape, consider the time of day you normally spend in your outdoor space. Early risers may appreciate vibrantly colored foliage that perks with the morning sun. Those who spend time outdoors in the evening hours can incorporate white or lightly colored plants that take on a silvery sheen in the moonlight.

Tie Up a Hammock

Make a relaxing retreat in the comfort of your own yard by hanging a hammock from trees or between posts on your deck.

Add a Birdbath

These garden favorites come in a variety of styles and colors to fit your unique tastes and budget. Birds of all kinds can find an oasis in their new bath and provide you with a beautiful view.

Throw Some Pillows

Outdoor pillows are often available in the same fun designs of their indoor counterparts. Add some throw pillows for a chic yet comfortable update.

These subtle changes can help beautify your outdoor spaces and cause onlookers to do a double-take - for the right reasons. Find more ideas at eLivingtoday.com.  Family Features

OUTSIDE LIVING
24 Coastal Home & Garden  Spring 2024

Homemade Pizza, Family Fun

Pizza, pizza a favorite amongst all! A traditional oven can take up to 30 minutes to preheat and cook a pizza, whereas an outdoor pizza oven can cook a pizza in as little as 60 seconds once the oven has reached the required temperature. This not only saves you time but also saves energy, as the oven shouldn’t need as much fuel. The high heat in a wood-burning oven doesn’t just cook pizza quickly, it also helps the toppings hold onto their freshness and flavor, unlike other slower-cooking ovens that can dry out or even burn toppings.

Creating pizzas can be fun and inspiring trying new ingredients and flavors can bring out the creativity in you. The most challenging aspect of the process is actually making the pizzas. The dough has to be thin to cook correctly, so it can be time consuming to roll out the dough, top it, with all your favorite toppings and fire it in the oven.

Since the oven is also scorching, you can’t walk away from your pizza as it’s cooking. You have to continuously pull and rotate, and re-fire the pizza

to make sure it’s cooked correctly. Leaving your pizza for too long will lead to a crust that is too crispy, so I recommend buying extra dough and ingredients if you need to re-make your pizza entirely. It’s a learning curve but once you master it, you’ll be having pizza parties!

Wait…but there’s more to a pizza oven than just making pizza. One of the best uses for your outdoor pizza oven is making corn-on-the-cob. Soak the entire cob, husk, and all, and let it char in the oven. You can serve your corn with parmesan cheese, butter, and spices. You can also bake bread in the pizza oven; it’s an especially helpful option in the summer months when baking anything inside your home oven would be a bit too toasty.

Another popular and favorite way to use a pizza oven, is to roast vegetables. You don’t have to flip on the grill to get perfectly charred tomatoes, squash and onions and more. So before summer is in full swing be sure to get your pizza oven, they’re great for family gatherings, neighborhood parties or a romantic dinner for two. 

An Epic Aptos Estate

Coastal Home and Garden chose to feature this property based on its pristine location and unique ranch living. Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of Aptos, lies an extraordinary equestrian estate, a sanctuary where nature’s bounty intertwines with luxurious living. Spread across 80 acres of verdant landscape, this property is a testament to the harmonious blend of tranquility and sophistication.

The architectural marvels of the estate are equally awe-inspiring, crafted with an eye for both beauty and functionality. Designed by renowned architect John Blackburn of Blackburn Architects, P.C., the main residence exudes rustic elegance, with its timber-framed structure seamlessly blending with Montana river rock accents. Perched atop the upper acreage, the main residence offers panoramic views of the Aptos Hills, inviting the outdoors in through skylights that bathe the interiors in natural light. The outdoor amenities of the estate are nothing short of spectacular, designed to delight and inspire at every turn. A covered patio with a stone fireplace beckons for al fresco gatherings, while sprawling lawns provide ample space for leisurely strolls or picnics amidst nature’s splendor. Rolling hillsides dotted with oaks and pines invite exploration, offering a glimpse into the timeless beauty of California’s countryside.

Adjacent to the main residence are the gated organic gardens, a testament to sustainable living and a haven for those with a green thumb. Elevated garden beds, meticulously tended to, offer a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances, while a charming chicken coop adds a touch of rural charm. Wander through the gated orchard, where a cornucopia of fruits awaits— apple, passionfruit, lemon, pomegranate, pears, Buddha’s Hand, fig, apricot, peach, plum, persimmon, avocado, orange, pineapple guava,

and more! Confirmation of the fertile soil and favorable microclimate of Pleasant Valley.

On the lower ranch stands an equestrian complex that epitomizes equine luxury. The 8-stall barn, a showpiece in its own right, boasts skylights and impeccable craftsmanship, providing a sanctuary for beloved equine companions. Outside, a covered round pen and open arena offer ample space for training and recreation, while multiple paddocks ensure the comfort and well-being of resident horses. Venturing further, the lower ranch reveals a hidden gem—a 3-acre organic vineyard, where rows of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines flourish under the California sun. Harvested and produced by local winemaker Madison Wines, yielding wines of unparalleled quality and reflecting the estate’s commitment to excellence in every aspect of its endeavors. Adjacent to the vineyard, additional irrigated garden space beckons, promising a bounty of farmfresh produce to grace the table.

But perhaps the most remarkable feature of the estate lies hidden away on the lower ranch—a state-of-the-art “micro-grid” power system and a charming “tiny home,” showing the estate’s commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency. Here, off-grid living meets modern convenience, offering a glimpse into a more harmonious way of life. In every corner of the 164 Pleasant Valley Estate, a sense of serenity reigns supreme, inviting residents to embrace a life of beauty, sustainability and tranquility. Replace Your Lawn and Receive a Rebate

Artificial grass are suitable for Challenging Settings: Artificial grass is a good option for areas with poor soil quality, harsh weather conditions, and high foot traffic. It can be installed in areas where natural grass would struggle to grow, such as shady spots or areas with limited access to water. You can get synthetic lawn that’s late-summer long, or puttinggreen short, or somewhere in between. You can get dark green or light green, depending on the kind of grass that grows near you. You can even choose the color of the springy under layer. Variegated strands some dark, some light are also available and looks especially real.

The best part of installing artificial lawn... No pouring clean water into the grass. No burning gasoline to mow it. No fertilizer running into the sea. No gofers popping through. Looks amazing all the time!

People will stop and stare, and say how magnificent your lawn is. And you don’t have to tell anyone it’s artificial. You can let people think you have a very green thumb, and a silent, invisible mower, and just say thank you.

In summary, artificial grass has both pros and cons, and it is important to consider both when deciding whether it is the right choice for your landscaping needs. Artificial grass offers a wide range of cost effective or high-quality artificial grass products that are designed to meet the needs of residential and commercial customers. By considering factors such as size and shape, foot traffic, environmental considerations, and quality, you can choose the right artificial grass product to create a beautiful and lowmaintenance outdoor space.

Up to $2 per square foot of turf replaced with low-water-use plants (artificial turf does not qualify). Replace existing high-water use turf with low-water-use plants and receive up to $2 per square foot of turf replaced. In addition to receiving a rebate, you will save money on water and landscape maintenance. The maximum turf replacement rebates from Soquel Creek Water District are $2,000 per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) for single-family residential customers and $10,000 per fiscal year for commercial and multi-family residential customers.

Scotts Valley Water District

Turf’s Up! Lawn replacement – $2.00 per square foot for replacement of existing irrigated lawn with any combination of low-water-use plants, mulch, artificial turf, or pervious hardscape. Existing high-volume irrigation must be permanently disabled or converted to low-volume or subsurface irrigation. The District will also consider low-water turf blends or low-water groundcover if paired with subsurface or rotary small-stream spray irrigation. The rebate cannot be combined with a spray irrigation rebate.

Watsonville Utilities

The City of Watsonville offers a $1.00 per square foot rebate for customers to replace high-water-use lawns and areas irrigated by sprinklers with droughttolerant, permeable landscaping and efficient irrigation equipment. Interested customers are eligible for a replacement rebate of up to $1000 for residents and $2,000 for multi-family, commercial, or institutional customers. Edible perennials and fruit trees may be included in landscape conversion projects.
