Improved defense, pitching keys for Timberwolves By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Cissna Park High School baseball coach Darryl Focken has seen a lot of baseball as he amassed a career record of 371-350. The coach knows how to improve on last year’s 5-23 mark. “I think our defense should be much improved,” Foecken said. “I think our team should be much improved.” The team will need to improve its hitting as well. Returning starters Tanner Benoit, who had a .235 batting average, and Keegan Boyle, who batted .280, are the top averages from last season that are coming back. Sophomore returning letter winners are Will Petry, Gavin Speirs and Theran Blanck. Four juniors will be looked to for major contributions. Letter winners Dawson Savoree and Mario Renteria return. The Timberwolves will get an added influx of talent with Conner Lober, who didn’t play last year, and Bailey Sluis, who was injured last year, are both available for this season. Focken is worried about his team but said the Timberwolves will bet better as the season progresses. The Timberwolves team speed should help them win games they would have lost last year.

“We want to be aggressive on the bases this year,” Focken said. Consistency will be important for the Timberwolves in the Sangamon Valley Conference, which is mostly Class 2A teams. “We have to be consistent both on the mound and on deCISSNA PARK BASEBALL ROSTER Name Tanner Benoit Bailey Sluis Conner Lober Mario Renteria Dawson Savoree Rudy King Will Petry Gavin Speirs Hayden Overbey Theran Blanck Keegan Boyle Zane Pierce Ian Rogers Devin Hull Ryan King Brendan Trumann Cale Clauss Bryce Bruens

Donovan Wildcats Wildcats must replace Arseneau By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com CayLee Savoie begins her second year without team MVP Casey Arseneau. “She was the team’s main catcher for all four years,” Savoie said. “I have been teaching two girls that position.” The Wildcats do have five returning seniors in Adrienne Adams, Hannah Askew, Tabby Lareau, Morgan Squyres and Alyssa Setticasi with junior Annie Clatterbuck and sophomores Faith Hann, Jerzie Waltz and Hope Mitton. “Even with having some tough positions to fill, we can still win some games,” Savoie said. The Wildcats were 6-17-1 last season. “Hopefully the girls stay positive and know that the hard work they put in will pay off.” Freshmen Sophie O’Brien and Hannah Smith will be counted on as well. It will be important for the Wildcats to come together, especially with many playing new positions. “It will be difficult but they can pull through and get it done,” Savoie said. Savoie said the team will set personal goals for themselves. The team goal is to win some games, and stay competitive in the ones they don’t. “I think the girls will consider themselves successful if they can get some wins and improve as individual players,” Savoie said.

Second year begins for restart of program By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Donovan just resurrected its baseball program last season. Scot Laudenbach assumed the coaching duties and he returns. The Wildcats were able to secure a win last year during the 16 games it played. More games are on the schedule this year as are plans for more wins. Six seniors graduated off of last year’s team.

“We only have four returning players,” Laudenbach said. “We are building the team and looking down the road.” As part of the future, the coach says it is important for the Wildcats to gain experience this season. “As a second-year program, the team needs to buy in to the program and continue to learn and aim for the future,” Laudenbach said. The River Valley Conference schedule will be tough. “We would expect that Grant Park, St Anne, and Beecher will do well,” Laudenbach said.

Powerful program plans to repeat post season By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Three straight sectional championships have been won by the Central High School girls track team. If coach Rebecca Swigert-Fenton is to achieve a fourth in her 14th year at the helm, she will have to fins replacements for Emery Podowicz and Andrea Pace. Both medaled all four years in various sprints.

Returning sprinters Madyson Beasley and Jenna Raines will be counted on as will returning state qualifiers Lauren James (shot put) and Katie Kleinert (4x8). Freshman Kendall Antons had an outstanding cross country season and will be entered in distance events. “Our strength is we have built a good solid foundation of experience and the girls that are around this year have been exposed

to that success and know our expectations,” Swigert-Fenton said. Central has graduated a lot of hardworking talent over the last two years, so it will be up to this year’s team to pick up the workload and be ready to compete. “I’m excited to see what this year’s team can do,” Swigert-Fenton said. “There have been some solid athletes in the past who have not gotten as many opportunities be-

cause of the talent ahead of them. This year is their turn and I have full confidence they will bring their best to every competition.” One thing the coach says her team must do in order to be successful is stay healthy. Swigert-Fenton said the Twin Valley Conference is “always stacked and I’m sure this year will be no exception. PBL returns several quality athletes, as does Watseka.” BOYS Justin Coggins TJ James Kollin Krumweide Michael LeClair Robbie Love Jeff Peters Joey Bernard Travis Felchlia Darryl Harris Caleb Kent Dominick Panozzo Wylan Schmidt Jeremy Snejberg Kodie Willis Alex Winkel Jefferson Caspary Caden Chamness Isaiah Ditta Nick Panozzo Carson Perzee Jarod Snejberg Trevor Swanson Dane Thorne Caleb Toberman Juliano Avalos Chandler Burrow Dawson Gosette Christian Ladehoff Caden Perry Jimmy Peters

Ladehoff coaches strong Central team By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The Central High School boys track team returns half of its state qualifying 800 meter relay team in Kollin Krumweide and Darryl Harris but lose Jerod Meents, Jon Hendricks and Kyle Grice. Coach Dave Ladehoff, who starts his seventh year coaching the Comets, must find replacements, especially for Meents, who finished third in Class 1A at state in the triple jump and also qualified in the long jump. “We have two of our state qualifiers in the

4x200 returning and are adding experienced freshmen to the mix,” Ladehoff said. Caden Perry and Chandler Burrow made the IESA state in that event last year. Freshman Christian Ladehoff runs distance. “We should be balanced in the track events,” the coach said. “Bringing along our field and hurdles will be key to winning the bigger invitationals and conference.” The cross country team which included Jeremy Snejberg, Travis Felchlia, Isaiah Ditta and Trevor Swanson made state last season and should provide depth in the distance events.

“Our distance runners have plenty of base miles in for an early start to add in intervals and speed to the 800 and longer events,” Ladehoff said. Kodie Willis in the throws, Jefferson Caspary in hurdles and Dane Thorne in sprints return. “We have our throwers back from last year and they have proven that this year will give us many more points,” Ladehoff said. “We are working on increasing strength in the team. We have been a little bit weak for both upper body and core that I have addressed in workouts on Monday, Wednes-

day and Friday mornings.”

All that early work is for a attainable goal. “We are looking to qualify our relays to state this year,” Ladehoff said. The underclassmen must step up for success. “We have enough freshmen to make an impact on the varsity squad,” Ladehoff said. “Keeping them healthy will be key.” He expects Watseka and PBL, which are tough in the field events and sprints, to challenge for the conference title.

Central Comets New expectations for Comets softball program By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Gene Kanak starts his fourth year coaching Central High School softball. The Lady Comets were 12-12 last year and 6-6 in the Sangamon Valley Conference. “We feel that our rebuilding process is completed and that now is the time where we can and should start to see results change in the win-loss column,” Kanak said. “If we stick together and believe in ourselves, there is no reason why we can’t be fighting near the top of the conference standings and winning some games in the postseason.” Jenna Offerman has graduated long with her .373 batting average but a strong core return in seniors Gabriella Griffith (.306 batting average with 13 stolen bases, strong defense) and Erica Cordes (leader and captain) with juniors McKenna Goldtrap (.342, 16 RBI, number one pitcher, first team SVC) and Alexis Waller (.375, honorable mention) return along with sophomore Maci Romero (.306, second team, standout catcher both in regard to her throwing arm and her pitchblocking). “I think that our biggest strength is that we’ll have a nice blend of returning experience and youth with tons of athleticism and upside,” Kanak said. “This is the most physically-talented group I’ve had here at Central, and many of them have solid travel

Watseka always seems to be at or near the top as well. Momence, PBL, and South Newton all have potential too. Jennings’ team young but capable Big meet experience bolsters Lady Cats By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The combined program of Cissna Park and Milford for boys track is headed by JD Jennings, who starts his third year without Dakota Stevens, who placed seventh in Class 1A in the 110 hurdles and Chaz Reetz, who was the team’s point leader in field events. Jennings has two sophomores to lead the way this season in school record holder Jakai Martin and Lucas McKinley. Freshman Brad Stock, who was second in the IESA state meet last year in the 110 hurdles must adapt to the taller obstacles. “We are young but this group is very coachable,” Jennings said. “We have to avoid the pitfall of losing site of improvement if we do not place consistently in events.” However if the team achieves what the

coach believes it can, success awaits. “I believe this group will break numerous school records over the course of the season,” Jennings said. “In time, I think we can put together individual events and relays that can win at the conference level and place at the sectional level.” Jennings expects the Vermilion Valley Conference leaders to be Bismarck-Henning and Salt Fork. Everybody improves so the coach wants his squad to peak for the conference, sectional and, ideally, state meets. A goal is to win the IHSA Team Academic Award for the third straight year. “To be successful, we have to be focused on and commit to conditioning early and throughout the season,” Jennings said. “It is easy to get caught up in the details and lose sight of that.”

By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com JD Jennings starts his third year of the combined high school girls track program of Milford and Cissna Park. Jennings has all four team members of the 400-meter and 1600-meter relays that made state last season. Gabby Wessels and Emily Duis are seniors while Anna Jennings and Morgan Kaeb are juniors. Jennings will look for places to add in IESA medalist in the 400 Alexis Puetz. “We return all of last year’s team and they are big-meet/state-meet experienced,” Jennings said. “We are a versatile run and jump team with great new additions that will step right in, including seven freshmen. We need to find a thrower or two yet to round out our

roster.” That seasoning and experience could lead to certain expectations. “With our experience and strong group of newcomers, it could be a special season,” Jennings said. A goal is to win the IHSA Team Academic Award for the third straight year. Jennings said the idea of the regular season isn’t so much to succeed, but to figure to how to achieve success in the postseason. Training and conditioning for the last meets of the year will be the main focus. “In time, we will need to incorporate all of the hurdling, jumping, and baton passing details,” Jennings said. ‘I expect Bismarck and Salt Fork to be strong contenders for the Vermilion Valley Conference title again.”

Milford Bearcats

Bearcats hope to improve on last year’s regional title By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Last year, Milford High School won just its second regional championship ever in baseball. Coach Greg DeWerff hopes to repeat that achievement in his sixth year at the helm. DeWerff has a 61-65 record with last year’s team going 12-15. Any coach will say the regular season is just a primer for the postseason. Although some players were lost due to graduation, DeWerff is focused on the present. “Every player in our program is of equal importance,” DeWerff said. “Success will only occur if everyone contributes in their own way throughout the season.” DeWerff comment on his team’s strengths and weaknesses was, “We have 19 student-

athletes who have committed to bring the best effort they have every day. If we focus on getting a little better everyday individually, we will become stronger as a team.” The Bearcats goals for the season are “Win in the classroom, win in the community, win on the diamond,” DeWerff said. “In that order.” The Vermilion Valley Conference schedule prepared the Bearcats for the postseason last year as did rivalries in Iroquois County. “The VVC is a competitive conference with solid baseball programs,” DeWerff said. “We look forward to competing with each team, including several solid programs in the county.” If Milford is to have a successful season, DeWerff said the Bearcats will “control what we can and be responsible for our daily effort.”

Lady Cats’ record will ‘drastically’ change for the better By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Stephanie McCall starts her second year at the helm of the Milford High School softball team. Although the Lady Cats were 12-15 last year, McCall said there were losses that should not have happened. “One of our goals this year is to win games we should have won last year,” she said. “We have to play at our highest level no matter our competition.’ If the Lady Cats can do that, its possible that another goal can be achieved — finishing at the top of the conference. Georgetown-Ridge Farm and Salt Fork will have some say in that, McCall said. “We have a lot of returners who started due to being a young team,” McCall said. Dedication and focus have been evident in preseason practices.

However, the team is still young. Junior Brittney Bailey and sophomore Kaylee Warren shared pitching duties last season. Bailey’s .432 batting average led the team. Sophomore Jakki Mowrey batted .404 with 15 stolen bases. Warren batted .353. Left fielder Lily Habing has graduated but McCall is looking to freshmen outfielders Jordin Lucht, who led the junior high team in hitting, and Jadyn Schermann as possible replacements. “We need to overcome our inability to work the entire season,” McCall said. “We start off the season great, but when we get deeper into the season, we tend to fall apart.” McCall believes the win-loss record will “drastically change for the better if we keep our dedication and focus on what is best for the team the entire season.”

By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The St. Anne High School softball team is coming off of a 15-9 season under coach Erin Galloway. Galloway starts her third year as a head coach, second at Class 1A St. Anne, with high hopes for the Cardinals. Last year’s Class 2A state champion was fellow River Valley Conference member Beecher. The Cardinals played the Bobcats twice and lost both times but in one of the games Beecher needed two runs in the last inning to win 3-2. “I see us competing with Beecher for the conference championship as well as competing with the top teams in the area,” Galloway said. The Cardinals graduated first baseman Erin Corriveau, who had a .343 batting average, but return a core of players that have played together for five years, including going to the Illinois Elementary Schools Association state tournament in 2015. Four sophomores — Grace Langellier (.481, third team all-state), Kendall Yuknis (.548, first team RVC), Brandi Chase (.422), Shelby Davis (.400) — are the nucleus of that core. “Our strength is this group has been together for years,” Galloway said. “Our offense and defense is going to carry us this year. We have been working hard on hitting this offseason and producing more runs. We are hoping to have a better year on the mound. Our pitchers this year are focused on throwing more strikes and cutting back on giving up walks.” Galloway is also looking for contributions from freshman pitcher Taylor DeYoung. “Our goal is to be in every game, win the conference and go far in the postseason,” Galloway said. There is one thing the Cardinals must overcome to be successful this season. “We need to stay positive and not give up when things get tough,” Galloway said.

Bartnik starts second year By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The St. Anne High School baseball team went 11-19 last season in coach Ted Bartnik’s first year. Two senior starters return in Travis DeYoung and Jake Nicholson. The Cardinals have an influx of underclassmen with the majority of the team freshman and sophomores. Sophomore Connor Cotton looks to fill the role of key newcomer coming off a fast start as a freshman. Key losses for the Cardinals are Austin Broers, Noah Burling, Alec Blanchette, Michael Emerson, Aaron Rodriguez and Zach Cowsert. “Losing six senior starters will be tough, but the new kids on the block are ready to step in and move the program forward,” Bartnik said. Finding replacements for them will be crucial. The Cardinals must overcome their youth and inexperience in order to be successful. “I think the game will speed up for a lot of the younger players and there will be an adjustment period where they wonder if they belong,” Bartnik said. “Once our players can get past that, we should be good for years to come.” While the Cardinals will be young, they will also be athletic. “We have a lot of able athletes on our team that need to learn the fundamentals of baseball,” Bartnik said. “We will be able to run, catch it most days, and be aggressive.” A weakness of this team would be age and experience level. “This is the year that we will be building our core for the next two to three years,” Bartnik said. “We have quite a few promising athletes that are starting to develop into good baseball players.” To develop those players, Bartnik’s goal is to simplify the game as a team. “We will try to limit mental mistakes to a minimum,” Bartnik said. “We want to have an errorless streak of some kind at some point in the season.” That season will include River Valley Conference opponents Illinois Lutheran, which won the league last year, and Beecher.

Grant Park co-op to help Cardinals By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Neal Buck starts his first year as the head coach of the Saint Anne boys track team with a solid nucleus, including athletes from Grant Park, who will form a co-op agreement with the Cardinals. Martin Cintora, Jesse Page, Jimmy Pratl, Chase VanDuersen and Christian neitfeldt return and the coach is planning on newcomers Luke Fox and Angel Pizano, who both went to the IESA state meet last year to provide depth as will Caleb Baines, Teondre Shannon, Levi Strong and Mari Anthony.

A big loss to graduation was Jalmen Sullivan, who went to state in the 400 meters, the triple jump and the high jump. “We have a very young team which means that we are going to be able to build into a strong program over the next couple of years,” Buck said. “However, with youth comes inexperience that will surely come into play here early in the season. We co-op with Grant Park which brings a lot to the team, including athletes with energy, drive, and determination to get better.” The coach has a positive outlook on the year.

Parsons takes over girls track at St. Anne By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Caleb Parsons takes over the girls track and field team at Saint Anne High School. Parsons has helped with area track and field teams recently and is excited about his first head coaching job. He said his new team has strengths and weak-

nesses. “We are a young team and have hard workers,” Parsons said. “They are extremely coachable and willing to do anything that the coaches ask of them.” His goal is a standard one for track teams and what they all hope to peak for at the end of the year.

“We want to take as many athletes to state as possible,” Parsons said. One thing his team must do or overcome to consider the season successful is that they “Continue to work hard and get better each day.”

“We are looking to have a strong season where everyone gets faster than they were last year,” Buck said. “Our hope is to send some of our kids to state including a couple of relays.” For the Cardinals to do that they must achieve another objective. “Our number one goal for the year is to run our fastest times at sectionals,” Buck said.

Watseka plans to repeat conference, sectional titles By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Last year was one of the best of the 24 years Rich Dickte has coached Watseka’s boys track team, capturing conference and sectional titles. The 2018 Warriors may have some different faces but will have the same potential for a successful season. Hunter Lee was a main cog in those victories, but is now setting records at Knox College. Dickte must also find replacements for three other state qualifiers in Lance Dittrich, Nathan Schroeder and Anthony Mathes as well as all-conference performer Michael Hendrickson. The coach has an outstanding nucleus of returning letterman who qualified for state in Rusty Kuhlmann (shot and discus), Keegan Zack (triple jump), Drew Hagen (sprints), Darrell Collins (Sprints) and Justin McTaggart (middle distance). Dickte will also count on Ethan Keller, who missed the last half of the season with injury. “We will be strong in the sprints, led by

Zack, and horizontal jumps with Zack and Hagen,” Dickte said. “Newcomer Diego Cintora has already shown he will be a valuable part of the sprint crew as will (freshman) Jameson Cluver.” Collins, McTaggart, and Justin Bunting lead the middle distance group this year. Kuhlmann will be a top scorer in the throws and there will be good competition between Max Gooding, Tylor Durflinger, and Shawn Farris for the number two spot. Other newcomers are Brendan Fletcher and Lucas Lee. The Warriors look forward to continuing the success from 2017. “It will be fun to see who steps up to fill in the leadership roles this year,” Dickte said. “The goals for this season are to defend the Twin Valley Conference title and repeat a sectional championship. We also strive for as many state qualifiers as possible.” The health of the team as well as contributions from underclassmen will be crucial in the Warriors quest to repeat.

Lady Warriors aim for state this year in track By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The 13th year of Troy Simpson’s career at the head of the Watseka High School girls track team will once again rely on sprints and field events to set the foundation of a young team. “We are young this year with nearly half the squad being comprised of freshmen,” Simpson said. Two athletes in the field events reached state last year and plan on repeating. Seniors Asia Benson and Emily Bunting performed at the state meet in the shot put and the discus, respectively. Benson placed 12th in Class 1A. Bunting was an all-conference performer in the high jump as well. Benson is eyeing a place on the state medals stand this year as is Bunting. Junior Kaitlyn Bell and sophomore Izabelle Daniels were all-conference performers in the sprints. They will help Jena Horchem lead a developing sprint squad on the track with sophomores Brianna Hanners and Megan Martell giving solid depth in those events.

Daniels also looks to help in the jumps with juniors Rylie Parsons and Haylee Ketchum being key contributors. Freshman Kinzie Parsons looks to add depth to the throws crew and Dolly Murray adds another sprinter to the mix. Freshmen Baylor Cluver and Arika Stanley give Watseka a new distance component for the field event oriented program. “We’re already seeing them step into roles and make an impact on the track,” Simpson said. “We are eager to see what the upcoming year has in store.” With a young squad, Simpson has kept team goals modest. “The goal every year is first and foremost, to improve with each meet in our performances,” Simpson said. “The girls look ahead to the Twin Valley Conference meet and compete for a top-three finish in the conference. Simpson said perennial favorite Central will be up there and PBL looks strong this season. “The ultimate goal is to try and qualify as many events for the IHSA State Finals and look at earning some state medalist honors,” Simpson said.

Eight returning letter winners to carry team By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Joe Lyznicki starts his third year coaching Watseka’s high school baseball team with a solid core of returning starters to help the Warriors improve on last season’s 6-18 record. There are eight returning letter winners who started at some time last year. “We also have a strong sophomore and freshmen class,” Lyznicki said. “We will be more confident with four seniors this season and a solid junior class that has experience.” Jaden Downs, Joey Jaskula, Reese Inman and Levi Foster are returning seniors who started at various positions. Returning juniors are Ben Lyznicki, who saw time at shortstop and first baseman Tim Wright. Both also pitched as did Downs. Jayden Hemp, a junior, and sophomore Nick Al-

bright return as outfielders. Lyznicki will be without the services of graduated Drew Lavoie, who was a fouryear starter. He said the team’s strength should be making contact at the play but consistent and stable pitching may be a weakness. The Warriors’ goals are to finish with more wins than losses and use that towards winning a regional. One thing Watseka must overcome to find success this season is the loss junior Matthew Canady, who was a solid pitching starter to an injury. “We will need to pick up the slack as a team and build a solid rotation,” Lyznicki said. He expects Central and PBL to be strong contenders for the Sangamon Valley Conference title.

New pitchers important for success By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Coming off of last season’s 21-7 record, Barry Bauer starts his 16th year at Watseka High School’s softball coach with a 215-192 record. Bauer has the Lady Warriors’ career home run leader returning for her junior season in Magan Harris, who batted .443 with 10 dingers last season and 49 runs batted in. A third baseman last season, Harris will spend time in the circle this year. Other returners are senior Summer Cramer (.440 average and 26 stolen bases), Kennedy Bauer (.441 and 29 RBI), Natalie Harris (.291) and Courtney Thompson (.282). Bauer will catch for Harris, moving from centerfield. Key newcomers looking to make an impact are Cassie Peters, Kadyn Stevens, Mallory Drake and Natalie Schroeder. Bauer must find replacements for pitcher Taylor Hotaling, who is now playing for Danville Community College, Madison Bauer, who is now playing at Wabash Valley College and twoyear varsity catcher Blair Hankey, who batted .344 last year as a catcher.

“We will be moving people around to new positions so our defense will be a concern,” Coach Bauer said. “I think we have talented players so I think our defense will improve as the season goes on.” With all the changing of positions, it may take time to overcome the loss of the graduated players. “We lost three seniors that were a very big part of our team over the last three seasons,” Coach Bauer said. ‘We will also have many new players that will be asked to step into important roles for us.” The Lady Warriors should be a solid, competitive team. Bauer said Dwight will be the top team in the Sangamon Valley Conference. “I think we will be very good also.” Pitching is the most crucial element in the game and pitching every game will be new for Magan Harris. “I think if we just try and get a little better every time we play, we will be a very good team by the end of the year,” Coach Bauer said. “We must play solid defense behind Magan so she does not have to through extra pitches each inning.”

New coach has loads of experience By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com A new coach with plenty of baseball knowledge will start his first year at the head of PBL High School’s baseball team. Brock Niebuhr, who coaches the highly successful Buckley Dutchmasters, takes over a team that fashioned a 29-4 record last year. Returning starters from that team include Jaxson Coplea, Ben McClure, Keaton

Krumwiede and Mason Ecker. Newcomers will have big shoes to fill as a number of All-Conference Panthers went to college to play, including Andrew Zenner, Cole Eshleman, Dalton Coplea, Cooper Johnson and Kaleb Denault. Niebuhr said the strengths of his team are their baseball IQ and overall athleticism but the youth and inexperience are weaknesses. “Our goal is to compete and get better every day,” Niebuhr said. “We want to be

playing our best baseball at the right time of the year.” Which, of course, means the postseason. The Panthers have done very well in the postseason, winning regional titles the last two years. Baseball is all about pitching and that is an area that concerns the coach. “We will have to overcome our inexperience, especially on the mound,” Niebuhr said. “Keaton Krumwiede is the only guy

Vaughn intent on building program By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Kelli Vaughn is in her third stint as the PBL High School softball coach. Despite last year’s team record of 3-24, Vaughn has a 97-71 career record at the Panthers helm. “We have some talented young kids to go along with veteran Cassidi Nuckols,” Vaughn said. “We will definitely be a better all-around team this year because we will have solid bats throughout our lineup.” Senior Nuckols returns as do three sophomores who started as freshman in Emily

Adwell, Jolee Hastings and Sindra Gerdes. Sophomores Kelbie Hayden and Laney Rogers also saw time and will be joined by a talented freshmen class. Vaugn must find replacements for graduated all-conference first team Kelsey Vaughn and honorable mention Cassie Oyer. “We are very young, so these young players just need innings at this level,” Vaughn said. The young ones are experienced they have played in the summer and in junior high. “These girls are working hard and they

are enthusiastic about being here,” Vaughn said. “We look to move this program in the right direction this year, and then use this year as a stepping stone to bigger things to come.” Her goals are more general for her young team like competing every night, getting more wins and gaining experience. “The overall goal is to get PBL Softball back on the map,” Vaughn said. “As long as we continue to work hard, good things will begin to happen. I’m really pleased with our efforts in practice thus far.”

Innings played equal experience and junior varsity action will help season the younger players. “We’ve got some holes to fill in the infield and in the outfield, but I see lots of girls battling for those spots, so that’s a good problem to have,” Vaughn said. “We will also try to get some JV innings for these younger kids this year so it will pay off in the long run.” Vaughn sees the Sangamon Valley Conference title as a battle between Dwight, Watseka and Momence.

By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com With 40 athletes out for the PBL High School boys track team, head coach Dustin Franckey starts his sixth year with plenty of athletes to fill out all of the events. The Panthers have already adopted a motto for the season. “Our mantra from Day 1 has been ‘Start the streak!’ We plan to hone our specific events throughout the season and descend on the Fred Guyot track complex on Monday May 7 and put the team first to ‘Start the streak!’,” Franckey said. Last year the Panthers were second at conference and fourth at sectionals breaking a streak of streak of five straight sectional titles and three straight conference championships. Franckey said the key losses to his team are not continuing those

streaks. “I know this doesn’t answer your question but it’s what we’re using to fuel these guys,” he said. “The guys are hungry to start a new streak.” Returning letter winners Jonothan Muller, Kody Harrison, who is a three-time state qualifier, school record-holder in the pole vault Garrett Bachtold, two-time conference champ in the shot Jake Rich and Brandon Scott are a solid nucleus from which to build toward a new streak. “Our strengths include good numbers in every discipline,” Frankey said. “Our weakness is we might be young in a few events.” Nothing less of starting the new streaks will be acceptable for the Panthers season to be a success. To do that, Franckey said the Panthers must overcome last year’s champion Watseka Warriors as well as the Central Comets.

Panthers eye conference crown By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Alexandria Goudy starts her sixth year as the coach of PBL High School girls track team with high hopes for the season. Although Shannon Carlson, who ran distance, and Kaitlyn Riffle, who competed in the throws, have graduated, two school record holders return in pole vaulter Emily Graves and hurdler Olivia Frichtl. Frichtl has signed with Illinios College to run track. Ariana Gentzler, who recently signed with Vincennes to play volleyball, competes in all of the jump events. Katelyn Crabb is also a

returning hurdler and jumper as is Alexis Johnson. A number of cross country runners have joined the track team highlighted by Evie Ellis. Goudy is looking to key newcomers Kailtynn Hornbeck and Hannah Schwarz to provide sprints. “Our strengths will be in the jumps, distances, hurdles and vaulting,” Goudy said. “We are looking forward to a great season. We have some strong athletes this year.” The coach is counting on those athletes to achieve a team goal. “Our goal for the season is to get Conference,” Goudy said.

Raiders must replace graduated class By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Iroquois West High School baseball coach Sam Rhodes has been coaching 10 years and starts his sixth year at IW with a young team as graduation took its toll on a team that was 11-14 last season. “IW lost a lot of seniors that played key roles for us last season,” Rhodes said. “The 2018 Raiders team is very young. Offensively, the most productive players are returning this season, but we have more inexperience and unknowns from the rest of the team. “ Two seniors anchor that offense in Austin Saathoff and Alexis Ramirez. Saathoff was an All-Area first teamer with a .487 batting average. Ramirez hit .333 with a .416 slugging percentage. He will have to find a defensive replacement for shortstop Eli Fink, who batted .301. Junior Cole Stone and sophomores Tibaldo Alvarez are possibilities. “Getting experience and learning to compete at a high level for young players is key,” Rhodes said. That youth and inexperience are the obstacles to a successful season. “We have a number of young players, freshmen and sophomores, that will need to adjust quickly at the varsity level to make an impact for us,” Rhodes said. The Sangamon Valley will pose a challenge as will the non-conference schedule. “I think every team we face will pose different challenges for us,” Rhodes said.

By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com Iroquois West High School will have a new softball coach this season as Sissie Poppie takes over from Cameron Stone. This will be her first coaching job at the high school level. She was in the last graduating class at Onarga High School. “One thing about being a hometown girl is I know everybody, so I know who to ask to help what’s what,” Poppie said. “I can get them to help out as much as they can. I listen to anything anybody wants to tell me. I do know a lot. Granted it’s my first year coaching at the high school level but I feel I’m prepared for it.” She said there is a large group of underclassmen willing to learn. “I have a lot of freshman pitchers and I think they’re going to be really good,” Poppie said. “We have a goal this year with the seniors and that is to put our team up on the blank board that hangs in the gymnasium. Our juniors have really helped out with the underclassmen.” Helping her coach will be assistant Jim Dill. “We have spent a lot of time working out,” Poppie said. “I want to improve their core strength.” With a new coach the learning curve will be a challenge. “They only won five games last year,” Poppie said. “We want to double that. I have high hopes. If I have a positive attitude, it’ll rub off on them. My coaching style is positive. I encourage.”

Middle distance to carry Raiders By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The Iroquois West High School boys track team has always been known for sprinters but middle and long distances will be its strength this year. Bruce Kunsch starts his 13th year at the school looking to replace Markese Gaytan, Jacb Conner, Jorge Jimenez, Sam Andrade and Jeff McCurry from last year’s team. Returning letterwinners are Landon Hobbs, Trysten Massey, Jacob Reitz, Devin Knuchel, Max Grant and Thomas MacDonold. “Reitz and Massey should get us points in the weights,” Kunsch said. “We could surprise some people, but we will have to see where everyone fits best for the overall team. That will be the early season chal-

lenge, then perfecting the pieces once that are in place.” Knuchel, MacDonald and Hobbs will be the mainstays of the middle to long distance races. “Max Grant could step in there but he does a lot of things well so we have to find the right spots,” Kunsch said. Freshman cross country team member Connor Price could provide a key component as could sophomore Kevin Butler in the sprints. “The key will be finding that fourth runner for the relay teams and our younger guys growing up,” Kunsch said. “It is a much bigger step to high school than most kids anticipate. They will have to accept the challenges and overcome them.”

New coach will lead very young team By DOUG BRENNEMAN, Sports Editor sports@intranix.com The Iroquois West High School girls track team will have a number of newcomers this year, including the coach. Lindsey Pickham is in her first year of coaching so she is unfamiliar with the returning letter winners or even if there are any. There are seven sophomores and nine freshmen on the team. That constitutes 16 of the 18 girls out for track. Summer Kimbro is the only senior while

Ashley Aguilera is the only junior. “I have a positive outlook on the season,” Pickham said. “I am excited to start a new adventure and encourage the girls to work hard to tech their full potential.” Since she is in her first year, Pickham will have individuals set goals to foster with the team’s success. “This year I am focused on building up the program and encouraging the girls to achieve their own personal goals as well as team goals,” Pickham said.
