A new season has passed, and designing the 2014 range of sails for Gaastra has been very exciting. For most sails I redesigned them from scratch, this for several reasons. First I wanted to clean my files from all the added modifications that make it less and less clear for future evolutions, second during the 2013 development we learned many new things that I wanted to implement in the 2014 range. Instead of loading the designs with more modifications, making the handling of the files very complicated, I decided to start fresh with clean new files. We wanted the new sails to be more powerful but also light in the hands at the same time, so not to have the feeling of driving a truck. So we came up with a NEW LUFF CURVE CONCEPT (learn more details on the next pages) As for materials, we continue using our trademark 2PLY and C-Film fabrics. We added some new features, a new redesigned tack fairing, which is much softer and easier to use. New head fairings and a new clew construction for better protection to the exposed parts of the sails. For the vario tops we developed a new small feature, which protects the adjustable webbing from chafing when it comes in contact to hard grounds. We have further evolved the radial panel layout to the next level by adding a load tape on certain lines and removing all possible weak points. Of course all the successful features and concepts introduced last season remain, like our innovative sail materials, 2 mast concept and the overall quality construction of Gaastra. Our new monocoque carbon booms are now fully available and proving their qualities, with their incredible weight and stiffness and superb grip. For more power and better handling. Imagine more power with less work.... These new rigs really do make your time on the water more effortless. No matter how powered up you get, the sails twist to keep you moving forward. The redesigned twist releases tension from the head and allows the leach to twist earlier, thus taking away the back hand pressure!

This Gaastra material offers 5 times stronger UV protection than standard clear monofilm. A huge advantages in durability and performance, because the profile and shape will stay more contant on the long term.

NEW RADIAL LOAD TAPE

Comes on Manic, Manic HD, IQ, Poison, Cross, Matrix and Cosmic. In addition to our radial panel layout, this reinforces the sail along the load lines while reducing the stretch of the material allowing the sail to hold its shape longer when you get hit with stronger winds.

NEW VARIO TOP PROTECTOR

This little add on for the top cap on the Vario Tops protects the adjustable webbing from breaking down from wear and tear on rough ground.

NEW COLORS AND OPTICS

We freshened up the looks of our sails with new colors and details that catch everyone’s eyes.

All of these sails have come from a blank canvas. We were able to reinvent greatness in a smoother more simplistic form.

With the new luff curves, we were able to adjust the seam shaping with fuller lines that are more forward in the sail. The back section is flatter which allows better twist and a lighter feel to the rig

SAS - SHOCK ABSORBING SYSTEM

The thin film laminate of the K105 gives a dynamic flex with a quicker response time to the top half of the mast sleeve. The special material not only saves weight but makes accelerating more instant so you can fly through chop and coast through lulls. The mast sleeve works in synergy with the specified mast absorbing shock and releasing power immediately. This keeps you and your sail full of energy! 11 11


NEW LUFF CURVE CONCEPT We are always looking for more power and better handling- the redesigned the luff curves and the shaping points in the sails give that unbelievable feeling! The sails have more power, and don’t get heavy in the hands. We released some tension from the head to redesign the twist character, making it easier to open in the gusts while the lower leech remains relatively open. Pushing the shape more forward towards the luff was our main goal. Generally the luff curve becomes more round in the bottom and straighter in the top, to push more material in the sail near the mast and in the lower half to enable more twist up top. The amount of curve changes from sail to sail, but the overall idea stays the same. We extended the use of the DACRON LUFF PANEL to more sails in our range, taking advantage of its added smoothness and soft character.

RADIAL PANEL LAYOUT 3G Improved layout for perfect and locked in sail shape, smooth profile, twist control and durability. The 3rd Generation provides a full Radial Panel Layout from all 3 corners of the sail, the seams are aligned with the forces that originate from the tack, clew and head to avoid deformations of the shape and design of the sail. The new RADIAL LOAD TAPE brings even more heavy duty into the sails.

2-PLY FACTS

In order to be able to reduce the weight of the sails we developed a completely new range of laminate materials, with a much thinner film supported by a double structure of fibers, a balanced scrim of fibers orientated in the warp and fill and a classic X-Ply angled series of fibers. From here the name 2-Ply. We created a complex woven web with the highest durability that is very light weight. Beside the proven X-Ply we use this new laminate in the upper sail body to achieve minimal swing weight and protection of critical areas.

R&D Details New luff curve and shaping points in the seams, getting more shape low and in the front of the sail and straightening the back. The battens have slightly more rotation than in previous models and the trimming range is more flexible. The clew position is relatively low, foot is relatively straight and the head is moderately exposed. The top half of sail is in our lightweight and elastic 2-Ply material. We kept the Dacron luff panel as in our opinion it is the best material when looking for smooth and soft behavior, and great neutrality. The seams around the window are 30mm with 2 rows of triple stitch, for higher strength and durability. Radial panel layout further enhanced at the clew with additional radial tape reduces stretch and holds better sail shape. Newly redesigned tack fairing, softer and much more user friendly. The 2 mast concept allows all sizes to be rigged on 2 masts only. Newly designed head and clew fairings for additional protection of those exposed areas of the sail. Also available in HD version with a full Xply construction, to withstand the highest abuse.

BOTTOM LINE The Manic is a great sail for all conditions and all windsurfers. When it comes to performance in big or small waves, it is in a class by itself; a radical wave sail with neutral handling no matter what happens.

After trying the new 2014 Manic i was surprised how good the sail works, perfect control on strong and light winds and very maneuverable in the waves. Perfect combination of control and looseness.

Poison The new Poison has been completely redesigned with a fuller profile and a new luff curve. The 2014 Poison is more powerful but with the NEW Dacron luff panel, we improved neutrality and smoothness which makes it a superior wave sail in all conditions. The Poison shines in onshore and gusty conditions. Heavier sailors will appreciate the fuller seams that can be tuned for more or less power- whatever your prefer! During the development we used the prototypes in all kinds of conditions, from barely planing onshore, to South African strong offshore and peeling hollow waves conditions. A true all-rounder.

BOTTOM LINE Whether you are in wavy or flat water conditions the Poison is an excellent choice. Anyone who likes a slightly back handed sail is in the right place with the Poison. Just sheet in and gusty winds or strong currents are no longer an issue.

2014 IQ

Quad-Zilla

IQ The new IQ has a new luff curve while the profile and 4 batten concept remains the same. The shape has been updated for greater comfort. Although the IQ has been modified slightly, compared to the other 2014 wave sails, you can feel a great improvement on the water. The sail now feels lighter in the hands and is much more controllable in the jumps. On the wave it is radical and agile as ever. The 4 batten design for the latest new school style, powerful and radical, for those who want to always stay closer to the hollow part of the wave.

R&D Details New luff curve. The shape in the seams is slightly flatter, but more evenly distributed up high and in the front of the sail. The second batten twists more freely. We increased luff curve on the 4,7 to stiffen it up and reduced the luff curve on the 4,0 to soften it up. This gives a more even feeling to the whole range. Shorter luff and slightly longer boom for an increased power output. Clew position is lowest, foot is relatively straight and high and head is relatively smaller. Top half of sail is in our lightweight and elastic 2-Ply material and Dacron Luff panel for maximum neutrality. The PURE is now a reference for any freestyle sail. It built its reputation through the years with great and continuous results from our dream team.

For 2014 we refined the luff curve and worked on the twist pattern. What we are always aiming for is the right pressure point during the ducking maneuvers allowing a higher pop and bigger moves. We added a new size, 5,0, to really have the most complete range for any bodyweight and condition. Construction wise the sail is built with our trademark radial panel layout and we choose monofilm due to the more direct character it gives. We stick to using a Dacron Luff panel as it tested as the best option for smooth feeling and neutrality. Many of our competitors finally started using this material in the luff, proving that we were always right in sticking to our choice for so many years. Newly designed tack fairing, softer and more user friendly. New head and clew fairings give additional protection of those exposed areas of the sail.

Regularly on the podium at each event and with 2-3 riders in the top 5. Our competitors pay close attention to these details and took over some ideas. A refined luff curve and twist pattern make this the most balanced and effortless sail to keep the new moves continuously evolving. If you take freestyle seriously you cannot live without the PURE.

2014 CROSS

Faster Blaster

CROSS The Cross has been redesigned from scratch. With a new luff curve and more shape we realised more power in the low end and we made it lighter and more user friendly. With one less batten in the sizes below the 6,4, the Cross is the perfect multipurpose sail, it combines the maneuverability of a wave sail with the stability and speed of a freeride sail. Its skeleton is combined with normal and tube battens giving an incredible amount of control in the gusts and at higher speed making it the perfect bump & jump sail with tons of speed and turn ability.

ALEX MUSSOLINI I couldn’t believe how easy this sail was to hang on to. It felt like I had nothing in my hands and I was going SOOOOO Fast. I haven’t been that fast ever! I could duck jibe the sail with ease and pass my buddies all day long- that was FUN!

BOTTOM LINE Extremely versatile for any board or any condition. The Cross is fast, fun and friendly.

We also put in a Dacron luff panel as it gives softness to the sail and makes it more smooth. We took one batten away on all except the two bigger sizes to have it more user friendly and lighter. For the materials we used a combination of X-ply in the bottom and second luff panel for durability and stability, in the center top we put a 2ply panel for lightweight and a smoother transition to the leech which is C-film as we wanted a more direct feeling. The Cross is built with our trademark radial panel layout, a newly designed tack fairing, softer and more user friendly. The new head and clew fairings give additional protection of those exposed areas of the sail.

PILOT The Pilot sets the entry level bar higher and higher. Simple to rig, fun to ride you have a sail that does it all. A mast tolerant luff curve allows you to use a variety of masts and different bends. Super light, great for water starts and sail handling skills. R&D Details We are using colored C-Film which offers greater visibility and recognition on the water with a much longer life due the high UV resistance. Outlines and luff lengths are perfectly adjusted to use the least amount of masts possible. We also eliminated unnecessary roundings in the outline and reworked the twist to get smoother handling characteristics. The Dacron luff panel provides the best solution for a neutral behavior.

The Cosmic is our 2 cam freeride machine. The new LUFF CURVE CONCEPT delivers more low end and great handling. Its a 6 batten freeride sail for the camber fans, who love that locked in feeling that keeps the profile more stable.

SAVAGE The Savage is a no cam slalom sail, which has all the features of a race sail, but in a much more accessible package, with no cambers. If you compare it to a classic free ride sail, the SAVAGE comes with 7 tube rod battens. A dropped tack that allows it to be rigged further down for a better gap closure, making it a more high end performance oriented sail. It is perfectly suited to freerace and slalom boards. The narrow sleeve and no cams make it very user friendly in the jibes.

PHANTOM The 2014 Phantom is a high performance freerace sail. It is recommended for all riders interested in maximum speed and performance. Effortless to rig and easy to ride fast, which makes you deadly on the race course. We took the bottom camber off making it a 2 cam sail as we found it was not useful. By doing this, we made the rigging and the handling of the sail easier. Only a few details make the Vapor more competitive on the race course, but those are exploited only by the best and most trained riders. Everybody else is probably faster on a Phantom- basically a version of the Vapor with a narrower sleeve, one batten less, only 2 cams with all the other same features and materials.

The first thing you notice on the new Phantom is the removed bottom camber. Now it has 2 cambers and like the other sails in the 2014 range has a new luff curve and seam shaping to push the profile to the front making the sail more efficient while increasing the range of use. VAPOR The Vapor is Gaastra’s full racing sail. It is a no compromise design that undergoes continuous development work throughout the year. ACCESSOIRES CARBON LINES The time has come for Gaastra to step up to the plate with the ultimate competition boom. Currently we are finalizing the production of one of the best booms ever to hit the market. We have 2 sizes for wave and freestyle, along with 3 race sizes each having monocoque one piece carbon tail pieces. The Outline curves are optimized based on target sail sizes and the back ends come with different widths for each boom length making for a perfectly integrated rig. The Race back ends will come with a built in pulley system for adjustable outhauls. Oversized front and tail sections for increased stiffness, reduced diameter in the grip area for increased comfort and ergonomics. A textured grip section in the grip area increases the traction. A stiff mast cup for direct force transmission between the boom and mast makes the connection rock solid. A long closing lever for easy opening and closure while rigging. The new high tech Gaastra front end is built out of reinforced Plastic for more stiffness, better power load for more performance and lighter weight for better handling. The new monocoque arms and back ends are built out of the best 100% Carbon quality composite technology. The all new Gaastra molds are produced under extreme heat and pressure to reach the highest level of carbon composite quality.

Gaastra Race Boom 100 % Carbon The All- New Gaastra Race Boom comes in 3 sizes: 180 200 and 220. A no compromise racing boom extremely stiff and light. In particular the monocoque molded tail with integrated pulleys is super light and ultra stiff reducing considerably the swing weight which is a very important factor for jibing around the marks of the racing course. The front and back sections are oversized, properly making it the stiffest and lightest boom on the market.
