2013 Training Schedule During 2013 SACIA is working with a number of global trade associations to bring industry-specific training to the communications industry in Southern Africa. In addition, we are working to develop new training programmes that are specific to the needs of our local membership. Our global training partners are well established organisations who are committed to promoting the adoption of professional standards in the broadcast, proAV and IT industries.

The IABM Training Academy was launched in 2011 to address the Broadcast Industry’s skills shortage. The Academy is dedicated to broadcast and media technology and aims to impact on the availability of skilled staff. Through a growing number of courses, the academy provides the industry with knowledge and skills that are essential in a rapidly changing global media business. Emerging technologies and new business modules have combined with changing social trends to create new business and career opportunities. Their courses not only provide engineers and technologists with valuable technical skills training, but also offer administrative, managerial and executive staff training on the role that technology plays in the broadcast industry.

InfoComm International is the trade association representing the professional audiovisual and information communications industries worldwide. They are an ANSI-registered standards generating body for the audio-visual industry, and have also developed a number of training courses that are delivered both online and on-site. Their training programmes are backed up by the InfoComm Recognised AV Technologist certificate and their professional CTS certification programme. More than 10 thousand AV professionals around the world have earned the professional CTS credential.

Making a contribution to skills development During 2013 SACIA will award a number of bursaries to deserving students wanting to expand their understanding of the science and technology behind today’s modern AV systems. These bursaries are funded by grants received from SACIA members, as well as donations from philanthropic organisations who share our commitment to promoting professional standards and ethical business practices within the communications industry. Around the world, many successful

business men and women have contributed to philanthropic causes. In June 2006 Warren Buffet contributed $30 billion of stock in his Berkshire Hathaway company to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and in South Africa business leaders such as Mark Shuttleworth, Donald Gordon, Allen Grey, Francois van Niekerk and Cyril Rhamaposa have consistently provided funding for education and entrepreneurship. In order to increase the number of bursaries available to

broadcast and AV professionals, SACIA is inviting grants and donations that will contribute toward our objectives. We’re also inviting interested parties to get involved in promoting the adoption of professional standards, encouraging ethical business practices, and contributing toward black-empowerment initiatives within our industry. If you’re interested in contributing toward these SACIA initiatives please contact Kevan Jones CAE on kevan@sacia.org.za
