Light and Luminosity

“Carol Snyder (Fine Arts, 1985) lives and makes art in central Ohio, but her ceramics practice has taken her around the world. In 2017 Snyder was awarded a coveted Greater Columbus Arts Council Artist Residency in Dresden, Germany. She calls it a highlight of her career, getting to spend three months in the country creating work and lending a hand at the world-renowned Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. ‘This experience is continuing to influence my work, as seen in some major shifts,’ she said. Even in its evolution, however, her work is always inspired by nature. Snyder’s ceramics lean into the aesthetic of form, as well as her interest in the patterns and textures of a landscape. Practicing the ceramic craft tradition of wheel-thrown vessels, Snyder’s sublime porcelain pieces encourage viewers to move beyond their perception of pottery as simple domestic objects. All this seems, well, natural to Snyder considering the repetitious physical requirements of making work on a wheel. Her work has been exhibited in the Columbus Museum of Art, the Canton Museum of Art, the Southern Ohio Museum of Art as well as included in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions.”

Artist Statement My work comes from the ceramic craft tradition of wheel thrown vessels but moves beyond what we perceive as a domestic object to one that speaks of aesthetics of form and my primary interest in pattern and texture of the landscape. I condense and abstract patterns and textures from nature so that the work becomes less representational. This reductive method allows for the form to embody my vision, my memory and more importantly, a feeling that I had at the time. Subtle layers, of color and form achieve a blur of a moment that for me becomes a record of an experience I have had and perhaps a contemplative moment for the viewer. My work is not about a process or a glaze: it is to express a sense of quiet, balance, and ties with the natural world. Carol’s art is a unique fusion of exquisite craftsmanship in the challenging medium of porcelain with an evocative luminous abstraction of the elemental forms associated with the landscape. Jim and I hope you can join us to view her work. Tim Keny
