FADGETS FOR A REVOLUTION Recently during an important outdoor photoshoot, one of our suppliers pulled a rather stupid move on us that left us hanging high and 'dry' in the rain. We thought of how we could best improvise using the few resources that we had, but that too hit a snag. I learnt an important lesson that day; if you are caught at the crossfire of a revolution, you better be well armed and equipped with effective tools. Better yet, be swathed in ‘fadgets’ that will offer you that needed edge over such incompetence. What are ‘fadgets'? You may ask. Well, we coined this word to represent functional fashion. An intuitive combination of fashion, tools and gadgets or simply put, cool fashionable gadgets. Here is our list of ‘fadgets’ created solely for survival and toughness.

Waterproof, dust-resistant and capable of withstanding accidental drops onto hard, unforgiving concrete, the JCB Toughphone Pro-Smart is the rhino of Android handsets. A rhino because its extremely tough, it can take whatever punishment you feel like dealing out, and still come back for seconds. As a phone for outdoor types who work amid dust, water and all kinds of weather, the Toughphone Pro-Smart makes a lot of sense. The lack of cutting-edge functionality is a bind, but you have to ask yourself, what good is a HD 720p resolution Super AMOLED screen when it’s covered in grime? PATAGONIA TRAVEL BELT The Potentially Deadly Weapon Disguised As A Hidden Wallet It is common to be pick pocketed and mugged in Nairobi if you trend daringly. Regardless, the belt around your waist seems to be the only gear that no one will ever bother to swipe. So why not keep your valuables there? That’s exactly what the Patagonia Travel Belt does, keeping your cash and other important swag in an interior zippered pocket. If that’s not awesome enough, you should also be able to fill it with marbles for use as a potentially deadly weapon you can whip out in seconds. Ain’t that grand? BEAUTY MAKE UP
QUICK TIPS
THE ART OF GORGEOUSNESS
You see it on TV and in magazines. You desire it and wonder how to get it. What is it? A beautiful face. Is it perfect? Not likely, because models and celebrities have an arsenal of beauty weapons the average woman doesn’t have access to: professional makeup artists, exclusive cosmetics, and airbrushing among them. While a perfectly made up face is usually the result of retouched photographs,a beautiful healthy face is within your grasp. With these simple quick tips, even you can look like an airbrushed model. The bottom line is to know what to apply, when, where and how. WORDS BY MAURINE WAMBUI | PHOTOGRAPHY: JAMES QUEST | MODEL: VALENTINE

BEAUTY
MAKE-UP FOR THE EYES To achieve an attractive, brilliant eye make-up; the first step is to know which colors would go well on what skin color and to apply the make-up in line with that. If you are light skinned, you have the vantage to use almost all types of eyeshadow colors. Most ideal would be caramel, gold and orange. Those whose skin color lies somewhere between light and dark can use caramel, grey or lilac shades. Realizing the best result doesn’t stop at choosing the right color, but it is also very important to know how to apply the eye make-up. The shading should be done from light color to dark while variant eye-shadow colors. Apply the dark shade along your lash line through the corners of the eye. Apply the darkest shade at the finish line of eyelid to get that deep gaze. QUICK TIP Creating a natural appearance For a more natural appearance, go for light colors for your eye make-up. You should use eye-shadow even when doing the natural look so as to get a ‘shining effect’ on your face. You can choose light pink or peach shades for a natural but fresh make-up. If you experience huddles such as the eye shadow clumping on the eyelids, you can either use eye shadow that has intense color pigments or pearly eye shadows, which doesn’t clump on the eyelids.
you can apply once more to define it. It is very important to start the line from the inner corner of the eye, continue to draw a smooth line following your lash line.
WHICH COLOR EYE PENCIL? In line with improvements in the cosmetics sector, there is a myriad of choices when it comes to color range. Some include blue, grey, green, pink, white or even yellow. The choices of the color to use can be drawn from eye color, skin color or you’re the color of clothes worn. The only thing limiting choice of color are the points you wish to highlight. You can achieve wider eyes with light blue or white or you can have a more attractive gaze with green. And of course there is the indispensible black eye pencil. Black eye pencil is ideal for women with black or dark hair. Women with brown hair and light skin can choose brown or grey shades to have a less defined make-up. For a soft impression, smudge the line with your finger or with a cotton bud after application of the black eyeliner. This will also give you a mystical and attractive look. The wrong application QUICK TIP There shouldn't be any space between the line. Your lashes and the eye pencil line should both reach the end of the lash line. The line shouldn't be extended through the out corner of the eye and shouldn't be more distinctive than the eye make-up. If you got tiny eyes, the line shouldn't be thick. If the eye shadow will be applied as a line rather than eye pencil, you should choose the correct brush, and make sure the line isn’t inflated.
WHILE USING EYE PENCIL If used correctly, eye pencil is in itself sufficient enough to highlight and give a charming look to your eyes. With the eye pencil, you can cover the little flaws on the eyes; you can highlight the eyes and make them look larger and livelier. The main aim of using eye pencil is to get that illusive deep gaze and to highlight the eyes. You should be keep in mind a few pointers while using eye pencil. First point to note is that the line should be straight and shouldn’t look like its ebbing and flowing like a wave. Apply a faint line on the lash line first; at least that way you have a chance to retract if it turns out gory. If you like the way it looks,

THE BEAUTY GALLERY BY THANDIWE MURIU We believe in talent; and that outstanding talent is what fuels a remarkable revolution. In every edition of the FIERCE magazine, one remarkable photographer will be featured on a three page spread to showcase their unique skills and individual approach to fashion photography. In this edition we feature the extremely talented Thandiwe Muriu, whose lighting skillset and keen detail to beauty photography sets her apart from any other photographer. BRIEF BIO Thandiwe Muriu was born in Kenya and plies her trade locally. She picked up her first camera at a tender age of fourteen and immediately got bitten by the photography bug. After several years of experimenting with shooting nature, people, landscapes and wildlife, she discovered her true calling; Beauty Photography. “Beautiful imagery has always held my attention and I enjoy exploring colour, motion and contrast through my photography,” says Thandiwe. Her photographic style is primarily characterized by dramatic lighting and lots of editing. Much of her creativity is drawn from a personal challenge to turn everyday items into unique photography props. Thus far, some of the ordinary items she has enjoyed using to create images include cooking flour, wrapping paper, water, turmeric powder and sand. Thandiwe’s tool of choice is a Nikon D700 and does her post processing using Adobe Photoshop CS5. All make-up is done by Ciku Kiarie. www.thandiwemuriu.com

Rugged, torns jeans D

Get a pair of rugged jeans, preferably one that is a bit old and worn out. Or you can hit the ‘Mitumba Market’ and grab a second hand pair, one that you haven’t yet developed an attachment to. Why? You don’t want to try your skills on a brand new pair of jeans just yet. The result might be catastrophic and the damage irreparable.
Find a cutting tool. A saw or your standard bread knife would work perfectly. If you do not have any of the two you can opt for your neighbor’s Doberman. Throw the pair of jeans over the fence and allow the fe to liberally sink its beastly teeth into the jeans. Results for the latter option are quite unpredictable and usually not worthwhile… you are duly warned.
3 Use different levels of pressure while severing the fabric. Go against the fabric weave. Be merciless on the pair, after all, it is supposed to transform into a rugged pair of jeans. [Jeans created by Dayvee]

TRENDS
FERVOR Having come across many fashion designers and fashion retailers during my search for the trendiest wears in Nairobi, I realized some things that stood out strongly among these gifted fashionistas. Call them profit seeking fashion retailing individuals, but the overriding traits they possess include; passion, zeal, dedication and commitment. They all echoed in oneness, that the fashion business in the East African capital is characterized by neck breaking, nerve wrecking competitiveness. You need to have an iron gut and a love for fashion that stems from the very core of your being. “This business survives in blood and tears, there is nothing like it.” One designer said. During the trends shoot, I saw it all. The zeal of the passionate models who dedicated themselves to work past the twilight deep into the night; the passion and the tears of the talent coordinator who tirelessly worked to have the shoot run smoothly in spite of the rain; the photographer who was intensely keen to see the shoot a success. Bottom-line, the whole FIERCE magazine crew was phenomenal. I took a sigh of relief once the shoot was over, it was a harrowing experience caused by a spineless supplier. Then I understood what the fashion designer meant, “Surviving in blood and tears.” I had lived it. Fashion trends live in constant flux at the same time there are pieces produced that become timeless and iconic. This issue's trends is dedicated to all the fervent lovers of fashion and my dear friend George Ndirangu of 2DIE4, who despite proximity challenges from the trends project, worked earnestly to make it a success. I salute you.

FLEUR REBELLE There is nothing cagey about Huddah, there absolutely no caution about the way she puts it all out there on the social media; bluntly, boldly and fearlessly. She is gutsy and going with what she throws on her social media, the thin line between morality and utter madness becomes extremely blurred. She passes off a luscious sassy sexiness that drives men wild with lust. She has remained mysterious, shying away from the main stream media yet building up a lot of heat from her brassy social media blasts. Who is Huddah Monroe? Is she the ultimate boss lady (as self titled)? Can she be defined? Fierce magazine resolved to find out what makes this vivacious spellbinding vixen tick.

When you meet someone whose eyes seemingly pierce through your vitals, you get this sort of unwitting urge to brace yourself; while at the same time be at your best. Then they go ahead and surprise you with rare warmth that they throw at your face unsparingly. Those are the Hudda Monroes; the type of people that are seldom understood, the ones that take delivery of the same measure of love as they do hatred, the type that don’t cower at telling it as it is, the type that are in every sense of the word… Fierce
H
udda tames controversy with the same doggedness that Joy Adamson had when she was taming Elsa. The hottie just sparked out of the blue right into the celebrated social circles and now she seems to roll easy out of everyone’s tongue. Hudda this! Hudda that! Some think of her as the new hottest body on the block, some think she’s overrated only thanks to lust driven minds, some love to think of her as the present-day “Sweet Connie Hamzy”. But that’s them… because Hudda thinks of herself as Sexy, Bold, Bossy and Classy. She asserts this with a smile that sits somewhere between blunt bitch and pretty-girl-next-door. A pretty face that somewhat exudes innocence that leaves you wondering if she really is someone who could handle controversy let alone court it wittingly. For someone who harbors ambition to one day own a clothing and shoe-line, Hudda’s style is explicitly refined. In a simple trance she can swing from wild and sassy to flamingly sexy to whatever else category. I guess that’s one of the things that make her special. During this chat she rocks a pair of orange wedge-heeled shoes nicely complimented by the luminous green colorblock nail polish that covers her peeping toes. Her hair is folded in a neat round pile at the back of her head, almost like an angelic halo. She wears a tight LBD that soundly accentuates her gorgeous arcs and curls. She has chosen to cut her accessories to a modest minimum, only donning a tasteful timepiece that sits easy around her wrist. Tatted just below her collar bone in neat Edwardian Script are the words Fleur Rebelle; two French words that are a precise description of Hudda’s element. Also inked on her arm are flowing stars, maybe a mystical representation of her navigating flawlessly through life, or maybe not. Tim Kamuzu Banda otherwise known as TKB who is sitting on the chair across dares not ask; he is on a more
urgent mission, a mission to demystify Huddah. She seems confident… self assured; but some little fidgeting here and there betrays her poise a wee bit. This I didn’t expect from the ‘fiery’ Hudda. “She should be taking this like a rodeo ace,” I think to myself. “Or is TKB too bullish for comfort?” She confesses that this was her first gig for mainstream media. And goes on… “I don’t even know how I agreed to this interview, but I think this is something worth my time.” She affirms. I am impressed she thought so; otherwise it would have been an utter waste of time for the whole FIERCE crew. I have to admit, it was a herculean task pinning her down. So what’s the fascination with Huddah? Who is she? What does she do? Is she a model, socialite, video vixen, entrepreneur? Or is she a neatly wrapped combination of all the above? Is there more to Hudda than meets the eye? How did she rise to fame and can this wild flower be tamed? Like almost everyone else, I remain wedged in the dark; only depending on rumors fanned by haters and lovers of Hudda. Speculations and assumptions; but as anyone with a good head on their shoulder knows, assumption is the mother of all *insert preferred expletive here*. I sit in the interview lending nothing but ears, and, I must confess, a prejudiced mindset with mounds of notions about this lady. But I force myself to have an open mind, a clean slate ready to be rewritten by her as she outpours to TKB about who she really is. The real Huddah Monroe. We knew about Huddah from social media, specifically twitter; and Tweeps will tell you that she doesn’t shy away from serving eye candy every so often. Letting loose a body part of two with reckless abandon. TKB with all claws out starts off his line of questioning. “Did you sleep with Akon?” Here’s the thing. Not so long back,
Hudda had the local gossip platforms thrown in a melee of sorts with word that she banged Senegalese/American R&B and hip hop sensation Akon. Well, did she jump his bones? According to Hudda, that whole tale was fabricated by the media for whatever reason. She admits having had dinner with the star and his entourage but says the rest of the story was a blatant hoax. “Are you a groupie or an escort? I hope you understand what I mean by the term escort?” TKB assails. And at that moment I thought Hudda would bitch-slap the journalistic brute out of TKB. But she just let out a tiny cute smirk. “Some people are for some reason inclined to think I am just a groupie and say things like, Huddah is a whore or an escort… I am neither of those; and I will not try defending myself here,” she went on. “I will let people have their own opinions about me; I don’t want to change anyone’s perception about who I am. I am whatever they say I am,” with this, she sunk into her Blackberry, all while giving TKB a dismissive demeanor. Was TKB a tad livid? Oh yes he was. “About love and relationships,” TBK sets off again, guile eyes lighting up. “Prezzo?” “No comment,” Huddah cuts in. “Ian Mugoya?” “No comment,” the Boss Lady does it again, more curtly this time. “Let’s leave my so called relationships out of this.” “Surely you must have dated some men,” TKB calmly asks. “Yes I have, but I don’t date men anymore, they are the best people I know, but I love women. You have to agree with me that women are beautiful, aren’t they?” To which TKB lightly replied, “I can’t compete with you on that.”

“Let’s ease into this,” TKB continues. “How would you describe yourself?” “I am a bold, bossy and classy woman.” Huddah replies; and almost instantaneously TKB asks. “Why do you call yourself the Boss Lady?” “Because I am a boss of everything I do.” “Enlighten us a bit about your background, where were you born? Who is the Hudda we don’t know?” “I was born in Eastleigh but I wasn’t raised there. I am of Kenyan Somali descent and my whole family lives in Nairobi. I have actually been to Somalia once as a kid; that was before the guns took reign. But I remember Somalia as this very beautiful place.” On a lighter note TKB asks Hudda if she would have been as daring if she were living in Somalia. To which Huddah answers with unwitting ease. “Yes I would have been exactly the same; that is if Somalia wasn’t still stuck in the 70’s.” “What about schooling, where did you go to school?” TKB inquired. “I honestly don’t remember,” Huddah answers dismissively. The FIERCE crew present can’t help their chuckles. Was she getting in touch with her funny bone or was she being serious? “I went to many schools during my childhood, I can’t remember the names of many of the schools I went to, except for my secondary school which is somewhere in Karen.” “I know all the secondary schools in Karen.” TKB teases. “Name them, maybe you’ll help me jog my memory,” Huddah retorts. “Actually to be honest I don’t want people judging me based on where I went to school. But I went to Graffins College where I studied programming mainly in Java. After that I worked for a bit, and then got fed up. That, in a nutshell is how my academic story reads.” At this point I thought the conversation had started taking a stroll along bored avenue. What other interesting elements did Huddah have to offer? TKB seemingly read my mind and came out with bare knuckles. “What’s up with those photos?” “What photos?” she, again, throws those
54
FEB 2013
“You’ll be surprised that some of the stuff put up on my page isn’t even done by me." prickly eyes at TKB and quickly shifts them to her BB probably to sneak in a quick tweet. “Naked twitpics of you, making rounds in the social media,” TKB persists. “Well, what about them?” Hudda responds, not fretting for a second. “Impressive,” I think to myself. “Did you put up those photos?” TKB asks. “You’ll be surprised that some of the stuff put up on my page isn’t even done by me.” She tries to steer away from the line of conversation. “So did someone go behind your back? And post the photos?” TKB persists. “Okay, I posed for those photos, and they are now in the public eye. So whatever reaction from that doesn’t really bother me… in any case publicity either good or bad is still publicity, and I thrive in bad publicity,” the Boss Lady retorts. In the virtual and ‘fast-paced’ world of twitter, Hudda is your typical Spammer Hammer. Her twits vary widely from downright notorious, to sexy, to eerie, to soft, and once in a while to a scathing attack or reaction to someone or something. TKB pressed on with his mission, he had done his research well on Huddah and from that, he unleashed the twitter card. Huddah had created a battle field on twitter by bluntly giving her opinion about how she felt about Marya over her song Sishiki Simu. It was intentional and she let it be known. She might as well had stuck her head in a wasps nest. The retaliation from Marya’s camp was brutal and she soaked it all in. I admire that she plays hard and rough. The
tweef with Marya over her song Sishiki Simu went something like this. “@HUDDAHMONROE @maryaogopadjs truth is I didn't abuse u. I just wondered aloud why you'd sit down and write a song like 'Sishiki Simu.' My thoughts." "@HUDDAHMONROE When I dissed Maryas song, I was all alone. Why is the whole of Ogopa Deejays on my d**k?" "@HUDDAHMONROE I'm tired of shooting the s**t, my opinion still remains. Marya has no musical talent. #HakunaKituUtafanya" "@HUDDAHMONROE If I dissed Wahu, STL, Amani and many others with talent, I'd be committing twitter suicide but a fat brown skin woman with no talent. C'MON!" And naturally, she got back an equal measure of venom. @WorldStarBosset @maryaogopadjs Hun, you have fans all the way in Australia so don't let this chik who sucks d**k to get a meal bring you down" "@shiladiva At least I know what @ maryaogopadjs does and I respect that!!!....what does @huddahmonroe do? And why doesn't she respect Marya's art?" As she puts it, she hangs out with myriad local and international stars because she is a boss like that. Huddah hustles hard and loves getting paid for it. She prefers that your perception and feelings towards her, be it loathe or love, remain as is. She has no time to define herself and that’s why she leaves it up to you do it. You will find her shopping anywhere from upscale stores such as Angelos, Mr Price and Alcott Kenya or to other average places such as Toy Market or the exhibition stalls along Moi Avenue. Hudda’s vision is to build a business empire sooner rather than later. She looks at herself as a future real estate mogul and also of course own her own shoe-line. She looks driven enough to trample upon anyone who dares stand on her way. So steer clear. Hudda is fierce, bold, eccentric and a boss. A true Rebel Flower.

CHRONICLES OF A GIGOLO
56
FEB 2013
A
sardonic smile dances on her lips as she lets out a shriek of sorts, at the same time mumbling some of the nasty jibe she’d picked up from haughty. com. She was satisfied; I could always tell by the way she would coil into a heap next to me. Seconds into her huffing, she will pull out a Marlboro stick and light away. That would be the only thing serving to illuminate the stillness in the room. Not her flowing white gown that lay ghostly on the floor, and not the imposing antique painting of the Virgin Mary that stared down from the wall. “I have to go Sister June,” I would softly implore. “That will be 10k as usual.” “You muff! Don’t call me Sister June, Call me Sandy.” She would retort as she reached for a clutch-bag that had the most eerie crimson shade I had ever seen. I grab my cash and burst out of St Anthony’s convent like the past hour and a half never even happened. I hated Tuesdays. There was nothing amorphous about my life; I am a gigolo, have been since ’02. My upbringing wasn’t saintly, but neither was it as callous. After high school, it dawned on me that God had thrown-in a couple more inches my way, enough to make my member vastly whispered about. And as word went round, glances and advances were hot in tow. Initially it was all for fun and ego-pampering, until the day Ms Njuki saw it fit to generously reward our frequent discreet rendezvous. I doubt if she had the slightest inkling, but the petite celebrated MILF had just freed Willy. A day or two later I remember typing out my resignation letter and literally inserting sixteen smileys after a plainly vulgar and boisterous prose. Who needed a drab marketer’s job when I could have clientele on speed dial eager to have me devour them? Some young, some old, some slim, some fat, some with pretty faces that would shake the oval out of Barrack’s office and some who looked like weathered creeks; my ‘portfolio’ had become a global frat house of women who desired sexual fulfillment. Word of mouth was a beautiful platform. At 30, I reckon I am doing extremely well for myself. My apartment sat neatly in the middle of Lavingtons’ silky environs. A neighborhood where Japanese-Spitz and Chihuahuas take evening strolls with their snooty owners. Where cabro-paved walkways stretch parallel to well tendered flowers and greenery. A neighborhood where the flowers would peep through picket fences and uncannily wave you hallo, while at the same time stare scornfully at those who didn’t belong. I had gotten accustomed to the scornful stares. I didn’t feel like I belonged here. I almost hated this place. I miss Ofafa Maringo; a relatively ‘downtrodden’ side of town where everyone knew the next guy’s mother, father and kin. A place where mongrels take all-day strolls and gunshots will often bother the otherwise peaceful nights. This is the place where my mind glides to when nostalgia strikes. This is where I grew up, in the midst of simplistic happiness. But I had to escape from all that and try as hard as I could to create my own luck. Run away from the place I loved. Once in while it dawns on me that as much as that lady Njuki ignited a new thing in me, I had followed that up
to the fullest; to almost touch the epitome of my new-found career. I still remember a paragraph from an “instruction manual” of sorts that I’d read at the very beginning. Words I took to heart and use to inform my everyday activities. “Allow these women to come to you. Do not chase them or give them any hint that you’re looking for them, or a woman of their type. Do not initiate a conversation. Make yourself available -- play hard-to-get. Let the woman exercise her independence and feelings of making her own selection. This means that unless she’s really “turned on by the radiance of your personality,” or else quite desperate, she will not “pick you up” on this first meeting. But don’t despair -- have patience and continue your display of intelligence, good manners and charm.” It is not often that I look inside myself trying to find emotion. The last time when hysterical moans nearly awoke my conscience was the very day Ms Njuki had involuntarily inducted me into this world of sex and money. So now as I ride Keisha (my sleek grey BMW) to Ms Njuki’s house, I try hard to muffle any traces of emotion. The only emotion I have grown to love is greed. Greed served me in tons of awesome ways; it is the catalyst that fanned my libido. I park Keisha two blocks away from Ms Njuki’s house; she had a reputation she had to guard. The gate is open as usual, so I close it behind me and slink in, under the shade of the 9pm darkness. The man of the house and their twins are halfway across the world, swimming with dolphins in Hawaii. In her red silk negligee, you could swear Njuki was 18. Nothing could betray her 47 years, nothing at all. She wears the room like a mean queen as she ‘seemingly glides’ upstairs, beckoning me to follow. She doesn’t speak a word. She lets her raw sex appeal speak for her, the intonations are fluent. She still has the same petite frame she had nine years back. Everything still exactly where it was, albeit enhanced to dazzle just a tad more. Her body toned and flexible. Her lips pouty and thick. This was going to be literally worth every penny. Moments later as her lithe body took me in whole, only the intense pleasure mattered. Pleasure that surged through her from head to toe. But all I could think about was the crisp clean touch of legal tender. It had been a great ending to a great day. So I allowed myself to smile a little longer, right out to the street headed for home.
The only emotion I have grown to love is greed. Greed served me in tons of awesome ways; it is the catalyst that fanned my libido.
