Wooden Skyline
Graduation project
Wooden Skyline is a design study to the potentials of building with wood on top of the existing urban fabric. This way of densification of the city is sustainable, it fullfills the demand of the inhabitants and conservates the historical layers of the city. The concept of building on top of existing buildings is applied on the Fenixloods in Rotterdam. The new building is a multi-functional residential building where the interaction between the residents is important. Meeting spaces on different scales are designed. The layer between the existing and new building contains public functions. Each apartment is facing the main courtyard and shares a common space with its neighbors. The construction of the new building is made out of timber panels. Hereby the building has a positive CO2 footprint and is relative light. Wood is a renewable resource which is largely available all around the world and not yet used by its full potential.
folded timber column In the recent decades, there has been an enormous development in timber constructions and the production methods. The evolution from swan timber into massive timber enables us to make an homogeneous composite material that overcomes the length and width dimensions of swan timber. Building with timber leads to different possibilities for types of structures than other building materials like concrete or steel. I did research to the folded plate constructions which is a perfect combination between the material, the digital fabrication (CNC) and sustainable use of material. Folded plate constructions are based on the origami principle which is the art of folding a flat
paper into a stiff structure. The folds in the surface gives the construction stiffness, hereby the surface could be used as a load-bearing construction. I did research into different origami patterns. Calculations about stresses in different origami patterns showed that the diamond pattern is the strongest and gives the most architectural freedom. This diamond pattern is used to make a timber collumn, which consist out of CLT timber panels which are milled by a CNC-machine. This collumn support the new building and stands on top of the existing construction building underneath.

CONCEPT The Fenixsloods is a old industrial building built in 1922. The volume on top of this building reacts to the environment. The building is higher on one side where there is a river, de Maas, and lower on the other side at the border of a cosy neighbourhoud, Katendrecht. The volume is split into two volumes and the balconies are placed at the south side of the building to create comfortable living environment and interaction between the residents. Through the old building , the new ground level is accessible from where you can reach the dwellings and offices. 10

Adaptable Floatel
Architecture engineer studio
The adaptable floatel is a floating hotel for the offshore industry. The floatel adapts to the 12 hours working shifts of the crew. When the first shift leaves the floatel their apartments slides into each other to make space for the other shift. The building stands on a steel platform which can be dragged to a drilling rig at different locations. Therefore, the floatel responds to different climates and is functional, durable and selfs-sufficient. Because of the oscillation, the building should be light and could not be higher then 4 levels. The site is very small but the building makes efficient use of the site what results in more living- and recreation space for the employees.
day-shift
night-shift
CONCEPT The routines of the employees working in dayand night-shifts alternate from each other. Each person on the floatel has one cabin and when the cabins are not in use they are lowered into each other so it creates space for recreation. The left image shows the situation when they are in use, the right image shows the situation when they are lowered into each other. The cabins are hanging on steel cables in a framework, this ensures that the cabins can only move vertical. The cabins on the east and west side of the building are connected to each other and are in balance. Because of the balance, it takes relatively less energy to move the cabins.

climate The floatel is self-sufficient, energy is produced by solar energy and if needed by generators. The ETFE-foil act as a second skin with improves the insulation. The building is mechanically ventilated. The ventilation pipes of the cabins are moving along and are not in use when the cabins are slided into each other. The water pipes are made out of rubber what makes them flexible.

ETFE-FACADE The ETFE-foil protects the building from the wind and creates an isolating layer where sun shading and fire routes are placed.
CONSTRUCTION The steel beam ensure that the wind load is transmitted to the main construction.
MAIN CONSTRUCTION These beam columns and windbracings are the main construction. The cabins and floors are hanging with steel cables on the trusses.
CABINS The cabins are made of composite and are hanging on steel cables in a the main construction, this ensures that the cabins can only move vertical. The east and west cabins are in balance so it takes not so much energy to move the cabins vertical. FLOORS These floors are stiff and ensure that the wind load is evenly distributed

Katoenveem
Bachelor thesis
During my bachelor thesis I renovated De Katoenveem into a shared business complex where the characteristics of the old shed merge with new infill. The concrete construction and the robust harbor environment characterize the old shed where cotton used to be stored. For the infill of the enormous space, shipping containers are used because they reflect to the characteristics of the building. The containers are climatized and houses different types of offices and service facilities. Due to the small scale of the containers, a more ‘human’ scale is brought back to the buildings without changing the existing construction. The lack of natural daylight in the old building is solved by demolishing parts of the old facade and replacing it with a curtain glass facade withs stand on the existing concrete floor.
location De Katoenveem is located in an area which is under development, the municipality wants to create a vibrant and innovative atmosphere. De Katoenveem will act as a catalyst for this area. At the north and south side of the building plublic spaces will be created. The redesign responses to these public spaces by linking them with an elongated axis through the building. This axis connects the different spaces in the building but also offers plenty of space for interaction between people.

Contemporary Extension
Freelance architect
The owners of a semi-attached house build in the 90’s wanted to renovate their kitchen into a open kitchen. I designed a modern kitchen-island but also concerned the garden by creating a subtle transition from the kitchen to the garden. The kitchen island provides interaction between the users and there guests. To provide enough daylight into the house, a roof-light was made. The stove is situated under this roof-light. To be able to place a hood above the stove, I designed a handmade frame made out of steel to place the hood in. The frame is fixed in the roof above the countertop and expanded under the roof-light to place it above the stove. The materials concrete, wood and steel are used to give the house a natural and robust atmosphere. The floor is integrated with a heating system. A concrete appearance of the floor is brought back in the kitchen countertop and in the terrace of the garden. The same wood that is used for the table is brought back in the steel frame of the hood and in the garden seat.

Furniture design
Work
It started with a design for a coffee table for my mom. Working for Staco Interiors & Exhibitions gave me the possibility to make furniture because I could use the facilities of the company. Many people liked the table and from that point on I was getting more and more requests to make furniture. When I make the furniture, I am responsible for from the beginning of the process, where I meet the people and create a design, to the end when I place the furniture. As I was getting more and more requests, I have learned how to work more efficient and with more attention to detail.

Recycled furniture The colorful dinner table is made from discarded interior wall elements. These walls used to stand in furniture stores but are discarded because of the holes in it. The old walls are sawn in linear elements of 10cm which are glued together with wood beams inside the walls. The closet is made out of discarded scaffolding wood in combination with white painted MDF. The doors in the closet are from a old castle in France, bought by the principals. The use of modern and old materials fits the characteristics of the house. furniture design

Internship
Personal architecture
After I finished my bachelor I wanted to gain experience in the professional environment. I started working at Personal Architecture (P¡A) which is an architecture office in Rotterdam. P¡A works for individuals and corporate clients and is involved in the redevelopment and renovation of residential buildings and commercial buildings. During my internship I worked at different projects and at different stages of the designing process. I was making professional plans and sections with Revit, participated in the designing, communicated with clients and contractors and I learned paying attention to the details.

stayokay met natuurpodium A new Stayokay hotel was located in the forest in Bergen op zoom. This durable and multi-functional public building seamlessly merge with the nature around it. With a removable wooden support structure and the use of biobased materials and recycled materials, the building fulfills it’s promise as sustainability icon for the city of Bergen op Zoom. During my intern I was working at the preliminary design. I worked at the models, presentation and I did research to the wooden construction.

House renovation During the renovation and expansion of this house which was build in the early 20th century I was involved in the last stage of the project. I worked at improving the Revit model and learned how to pay attention to details like light-switchers. P¡A was managing the project from the beginning to the end. The meetings with the client and contractor were taking place at the building site. At these meetings I experienced the difference in interest between the client, the contractor and the architect. I learned how to deal with these different interests and to communicate with the client and the contractor.
