N AN AMAZING act of bravery, Cranebrook resident Rachel Dean saved her neighbour’s life after she woke up to the devastating sight of his house on fire. Last Friday, just after 5am, Ms Dean was getting ready for work when she heard an horrific noise. “I get up about 5am every morning for work and on Friday I had snoozed my alarm until it was about 10 past, when there was this God Almighty, big bang—I thought it was a car accident so I looked out the window and saw just redness and realised that next door was on fire,” she said. Without hesitation, Ms Dean ran outside to the front of the house and started calling out the name of her neighbour, Roy, an elderly man who she has lived next to for 10 and a half years.

’Tis the Season to be Holly Street resident who said he had called the fire brigade, and I knew it was possible Roy was home, so I started calling out his name,” she said. “The fire was in the carport and near the front door so I ran down the other side of his house and started banging on his laundry door. “Another man helped me smash the door’s window so I could get in. “Roy was still asleep and I was dragging him out still in his knickers and singlet. He didn’t really know what was going on. And we found another man inside the house too and got him out.” According to emergency services, fire brigades

HILST ON an overseas trip in2010, Julia Gillard quipped that she would rather be at home in a classroom reading to students. What a difference 25 Prime Ministerial trips in 23 different countries makes. She now looks more comfortable on the world stage than she does at home facing domestic politics. Love or hate Julia Gillard, this deal with China is historic. It’s a big deal. The biggest since Gough Whitlam in the 1970s made a bold move and visited the communist controlled state and opened

up the dialogue. To this day only three other countries have the same access – Russia, Germany and the UK. I’m told the United States struggle to even get a meeting with the Ministry of Finance (NDC), let alone any kind of partnership. Just one month after the new regime was formally ushered in, Julia Gillard hasman aged to hold face to face meetings with the number one and number two leader – President Xi Jingping and Premier Li Keqiang. When the world is falling over each other to get into the Chinese market, forge deeper ties and latch on to China’s extraordinary growth, Australia has trumped them all. For a former Education Minister more comfortable at home in the classroom, Prime Minister Julia Gillard might be

best remembered for her achievements overseas. She secured a strategic partnership with India last year and now China .The two most populous countries in the world that will produce 3.5 billion middle class customers over the coming decade. These customers will want to travel, drink good wine, eat good food and have the good life. So for all the medium to small businesses in Australia, whether you operate a small vineyard in South Australia, produce organic food in NSW or run travel tours in Queensland, there is opportunity for us all. The furthering of these relationships will be one of Julia Gillard’s few great legacies – and future governments both Liberal and Labor will benefit for decades to come.

A TRAGIC LOSS ON THE FOOTY FIELD AND AN AWFUL NIGHT OF TELEVISION

HEN YOU rush around getting ready in the morning, between packing lunch boxes and making sure you’re not wearing odd socks, very little thought is given to the fact that when you walk out the front door, you may never go back through it again. The fragility of life has been somewhat in focus this week with one freakish incident on a rugby league field in Coff s Harbour stunning the community. 15-year-old Jake Kedzlie was accidentally struck by the knee of an opponent whilst playing an under 16’s match for the Sawtell Panthers last Saturday. A few days later his family made the agonising decision to switch off the machines that were keeping him alive. Th ey lost their baby boy. The story’s more public twist came when it was revealed that Jake was the grandson of league great Tommy Raudonikis. It didn’t make the story any more

heartbreaking than it already was, but for many it probably brought home the harsh reality of it. Raudonikis has always been seen as one of the giant larrikins of the game; always smiling and telling stories from his glory days. For most of us, we probably didn’t even give a second thought to what was below the surface. Th is week, we saw Tommy stripped bare and the emotion he displayed was heart-wrenching. Parents and grandparents should never have to bury a child; but the pain of it being simply not “in order” is matched by the fact that when you look at your kids, you look at hope, dreams and possibilities.

The fact that 15-year-old Jake ran onto the footy f eld on Saturday and lost his life, proves how precious every moment really is, and how what we worry about in our day-to-day lives is sometimes so inconsequential, that it is embarrassing to even think about it. On a side note, and the Logie goes to... Well, I didn’t know until I woke up on Monday morning. Why does Channel Nine persist in showing the event on delay? Why are there no Australian musicians performing at an event that celebrates, er, Australians? How does Joel Madden, an international music superstar, win Best New Talent? An overhaul is certainly needed.

OF ARTISTIC CONNECTIONS State funding links people with a disability and artists BASIL NAIMET

HE MINISTRY for Arts and Ministry for Ageing and Disability Services are tipping in more than $520,000 to support projects across NSW for people living with disabilities to enhance their creative and artistic skills. Minister for the Arts, George Souris said the money will target a range of projects that will support people with disabilities get access to professional artists. “The funding is part of the $1.5 million the Government has committed to boost access and inclusion in arts and cultural activities for people with disability across NSW,” he said. An affiliation of The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, ‘Roomies’ on Addison Road, Marrickville, will be the recipients of approximately $37,000 to create the ‘Encore project’. Carol Hamilton the Community Linking Project Manager for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre says the funds are welcome and will help the centre meet the objective for supporting the people who will use Roomies. “The encore project is a visual arts program that is designed to help residents who are living in assisted boarding houses. The residents and accommodation they live in come under the Department

HILDREN FROM Marrickville West Primary School’s student representative council (SRC) took part in a committee meeting on Wednesday to organise the Marrickville Childrens’ Festival later this month. Led by nine-year-old Hailie Brown, who will MC at the March 23 event, the SRC has planned the festival including activities, food, entertainment, volunteers and costs. “Th e SRC runs a lot of the festival,” said Miss Brown, a representative of her Year 4 class. “We’re planning the sausage sizzle, most of the performances, we’ve planned the jumping castle and we’ve scheduled some of the games. Everything will be organised and ready to run. “Th e whole day is about having fun and learning about the diff erent cultures. We want the whole community to come and enjoy themselves. “To the kids that are reading the newspaper, please come to the festival if you have the time, because it is meant for you.” Miss Brown has relayed ideas for the day from friends and classmates to the committee to ensure the event refl ects

the interests of local children. Marrickville West principal Ruth Bradfi eld-Ling said the childrens’ festival was about celebrating local kids’ diverse communities and backgrounds, so to have children involved in its organising committee ‘just makes sense’ and allowed student representatives to put skills learned to good use. “From the kids’ point of view, this is a fantastic learning opportunity, it makes what they’re doing in their classrooms real,” she said. “It lets them have an impact on their families, their friends and the much wider community. “It’s very rare in our world that we have festivals to celebrate children, their families and their diverse cultures.” Ms Bradfi eld-Ling described Hailie as a great advocate and public speaker who arrived at the school as a kindergarten student “ready to take on the world”. He is a lovely man.” The club boasts the biggest number of participants in the Marrickville area with 1,100 players, 150 coaches and managers and over 80 teams registered for the 2013 season. “We would easily be the biggest sporting club in the Marrickville area,” he said. The large numbers reflect the way the club operates, and can be attributed in no small measure to 92-year-old Bruce Livingston who founded the club in 1946 and is still a role model in the local sporting community.

Mr Livingston was voted the inaugural Marrickville Senior Citizen of the Year 2013. “It’s wonderful, I had no idea that I was going to receive such an honour. I’m thankful to the person who nominated me”. Marrickville Football club continues to grow, but not without the help of their valued sponsors who include Crust Pizza from Dulwich Hill, Sydney Airport Corporation, Soul Origin from Marrickville Metro, Tempe Tyres and Banana Joe’s supermarket. The soccer season started on April 6 and is sure to be another great year for the local club.
