ORGIN EAST AQUAPONICS CENTER reestablishing the food culture of East Bottoms | Kansas City, Missouri Comprehensive Studio

The Orgin East Aquaponics Center was conceived as the catalyst for redevelopment of Kansas City’s East Bottoms District centered around its ties to the food industry. Sited within a vehicle focused industrial area, the design is centered around capturing pedestrian circulation and establishing zones for each type to exist.

SKULPTURENPARK WALDFRIEDEN a sculpture gallery for Tony Cragg | Wuppertal, Germany Dessau International Architecture Studio

Sited in a dense forest in Wuppertal, Germany, the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden brings viewers closer to two forms of art: nature and the sculptural work of Tony Cragg. Meandering paths move through the landscape revealing sculptures nestled between the trees, capturing light as it filters through the canopies above. The design was inspired by the harmony of landscape and sculpture and presents the architecture as a reflection of the two. Built into a hill just above the Villa Waldfrieden, viewers enter through mirrored-glass where they can experience sculptures from a higher perspective, progressing down into the gallery space.

FLOAT a stone & steel fabrication study | in collaboration with Mitchell Culbertson Thesis Studio

Float is designed as a dual-functioning facade system that can provide visual privacy for interior space when required or sunshading when more visual permeability is allowed. With that flexibility in mind, our goal was to create a hanging system that would not clutter a facade, but rather support the stone in a way that makes it appear as if it is floating.

CENTURY 2.0 FOR WICHITA reimagining iconic structures to shape growth | Wichita, Kansas Thesis Studio | Schematic Phase

Wichita has seen much of its growth happen horizontally. Suburbs linked through miles of roadway and a vehicle driven society have shifted development away from walkable downtowns and into the convenient lifestyle of “suburbia.” As society and a younger generation renews its interest in returning to downtown settings, cities are exploring ways of reinvigorating urban areas. This creates an exciting but challenging opportunity to maintain a balance between new construction and reimagining existing structures that create a city’s identity.

Site The Century II block sits in the center of downtown Wichita, just east of the Arkansas River and Delano District. Since the 1970’s the Century II Performing Arts Center and old Central Library, two of Wichita’s most iconic structures, have occupied the site. In recent years both have either been replaced or require extensive renovation to meet the needs of modern society. Additionally, the existing Exposition Hall and service spaces close off downtown from the surrounding public spaces.

Exisiting Pedestrian Flows

32

By reimagining the program of these old structures and opening the block back up to the Arkansas River, this central block in downtown can act as a catalyst for further growth. This new public space aims to celebrate old and new architecture, responding to their set piece nature and relationships to other urban edges.

Pedestrian circulation Vehicular circulation

Contextual Edges

Left: Existing site circulation focuses heavily on the automobile. Access to the interior of the site is mostly vehicular, with only minor pedestrian pathways from downtown to the existing buildings. Above: With adjacencies to strong urban edges, elements within the park and new performing arts center respond to how people will circulate between these spaces.

PEDESTRIAN ZONE

Right: The site strategy is focused on reopening downtown Wichita to the Arkansas River through a pedestrian zone known as Century Park. Site Strategy

Program This design proposal for the Century II block is focused on activating the site on a more consistent basis to promote growth and walkability in downtown Wichita. Establishing a new entertainment district will help to attract employees of surrounding business districts to not only work downtown, but live and play there as well. To do this, Century II will be repurposed into an exposition hall and convention center, thus removing the existing Bob Brown Expo Hall that acts as the main barrier between

downtown and the Arkansas River. The newly inserted Century Park will serve as the connection between the different programmatic elements and activate the block with green space, locations for food trucks, and other public spaces. A new performing arts center and a repurposed old Central Library as a performance pavilion aims to serve a wider, younger demographic of Wichita, including a multifunctional performance hall and black box theater.
