10 – 12 Month Old Baby Your baby is growing up fast. He's become an eager explorer, and it might surprise you how quickly he can get around when he crawls or scoots. He can sit on his own now and grabs anything he can to pull himself up to standing and "cruise." He might even take some solo steps before his first birthday. His hands are increasingly nimble: He amuses himself putting things in containers and taking them out again. He can use his thumb and finger in a pincer grasp to eat finger food. His babbling sounds more like real conversation, and you'll hear his first words – often "mama" or "dada." Soon he'll talk in simple phrases, but in the meantime he uses gestures to indicate what he wants – or doesn't want! – and pays close attention to your words. Please go to my blog and find out more about how you can help enhance your baby's development.
10 – 12 Month Old Baby Points to Remember • Keep talking to your baby: This is a critical time for his language development. • Pay attention to what he enjoys, and give him the freedom to use all his senses to play and discover. Offer him crayons and paper, stacking blocks, empty food containers, and pots and pans to play with. • As he gets more active, it's important to provide a safe space to explore. He may not be walking quite yet, but you can help him get ready by holding him in a way that puts weight on his legs or by propping him up against the sofa. • Praise and reward good behavior. If he gets into mischief, a brief "no" and redirection is usually enough. Although he's too young to understand and obey rules, you can start showing him which behaviors aren't allowed and helping him find more appropriate activities. • Be respectful of his separation anxiety: Build trust by giving him time to get used to new caregivers and always saying goodbye before you leave. Put 2 – 3 picture cards on the table. Say out loud the name of the item on the card, e.g. apple. Wait for your baby to pick up the right card. Gradually increase the number of cards used. Praise your child every time he picks the right card. Another thing you can play with the baby is pointing out the different members of the family, e.g. daddy, grandma, grandpa or things like TV, chair etc.
Exercise Two – Mimicking
VIDEO
• Point out and say out loud and clear things around the house. • Use single words e.g. mama, dada , yes, no etc. • Face your baby when you say the words so that he can mimic the shape of your mouth. Exercise Three – Self Awareness
VIDEO • Use a life like doll for this. • Ask the baby: “Where is dolly's eyes?” , “Where is dolly's ears?” etc. or “Show mommy dolly's eye!” • You can also use baby's face or your own face. • Remember to praise your baby along the way. It is important to make the above three exercises as spontaneously as possible. Exercise Four – Dexterity This exercise helps your baby to understand object permanence and spatial relations. It is also an exercise to learn finger dexterity. It makes them realize that they can do things themselves.

Let your baby play with containers with lids. Place a small toy inside to attract your baby. Encourage your baby to open the lid. Do not forget to praise him when he succeeds.
The following two exercises help your baby to learn body control, balance and be independent. Now that your child is moving around, do not forget to child proof your home. Exercise Five – Standing
VIDEO • Put your baby next to the sofa and help him pull himself up and stand. • Put a toy on the floor beside him and help him bend down to get it and
stand up again. • You can also sit your baby in a chair, hold his arms and help him stand up. Exercise Six – Walking
VIDEO • Let your baby hold onto the sofa and watch him take his first step. • You can put his favorite toy a few steps away to attract him. • Alternatively you can stand a few steps away and ask him to “come to mummy”! Exercise Seven – Cognition
VIDEO • This exercise helps baby to find the midline and later on understand left and right. • Give 2 small wooden blocks to baby. • Teach him to strike the two blocks together. Exercise Eight – Kicking This exercise teaches the baby balance and standing on one foot. It also helps your baby to understand the consequence of his action. Start this exercise only when baby can pull himself up and balance himself.
