D6 External Examiners Interim Assessment WINCHESTER HORTICULTURAL CITY 29th September 2017 | Tim Gentry | https://timspart2.wordpress.com BRIEF To set out a strategy specific to Winchester and Wolvesey Castle, the project site, to utilise both urban and rural areas within the centre to maximise opportunities for farming flora and fauna in a way that encourages participation. • Site history and setting frames it’s genius loci • Three aspects of the driving concept: 1. That of the hortus conclusus or ‘walled garden’ - a modern Pairidaeza; 2. Landscape and architecture complementing each other, the water’s impact on the site; 3. Ecclesiastical / cultural significance of the motifs married with that of the site. • Two main philosophies / theories; 1: Philosophy of Enabling - generating participation; 2. Conservation Philosophy - manifestation of the new brings the old back to life. • A modern facility that reinvigorates past histories with the stories of people alive and yet to come. A head quarters to enable the local population, putting the former palace to a new use that resonates with the special provenance of the site. • A lab, manufacturer, educator, prototyping facility, farmer, market, advisor and destination for utility and pleasure.
