APRIL 2011

ROTARIES GET INVOLVED! WEST ORANGE ROTARY JUMPS ON BOARD The West Orange Rotary, through the efforts of Rotarian Dorie Cappiello, has donated $2500 to ChangeALife Uganda as their International Service Project for the year. Water and sanitation issues are a top concern for Rotary clubs. From 1978 through 2009, The Rotary Foundation awarded more than 4,900 grants totaling $52.7 million for water projects worldwide. Their generous donation will help fund our QuartersForWater Project in 2011.

Rolletah Nakawuba, who is sponsored by Baer Shirley, has been offered a nursing position in Rubaga Hospital. Her impressive accomplishment shows that there is a return from our investment in education. In Rolletah's letter to Baer, she indicates "carrying out nursing care in a Migyera hospital" in the future. Giving back to the program is part of our vision and it is gratifying when we see it beginning to happen.

They have also offered to look for ways to help raise money by asking volunteers to collect donations in busy venues, like malls, etc. Also, Dorie will reach out to other clubs to join us in the effort to bring clean water to St. Lawrence School and build upon the tremendous interest from the West Orange chapter.

SACCO BAY ROTARY, ME. LENDS SUPPORT Thanks to sponsor and Rotarian, David Wilson, Sacco Bay Rotary in Maine sent a $500 check and will try to expand the interest district wide in order to increase the donation.

LONG VALLY ROTARY WANTS TO KNOW President Elect, John Winstead invites Jean and Dave to speak to his Rotary Club about Quarters for Water. They are planning for next year's international project and want to know more.

If you know of any Rotarians interested in joining our efforts, please contact us.

路 Children from Old Tappan care! Their message: "We may not be able to change the world, but we can certainly try to Change A Life." Pleasant, NJ, chose QuartersForWater as their Lenten Service Project. The challenge: make water your only beverage for six weeks and donate what you would spent on coffee, soda, bottled drinks, etc. to QuartersForWater. We will keep you posted on their results!

The water situation is very dire. Pictured below is the dried pond where St. Lawrence school was getting their water. Our fundraising efforts will add to the current project total of $30,000. To complete the project, we need another $70,000 for drilling the well, installing the pump and generator, laying pipes and building a 50,000 liter (13,210 gallons) water tower.

Ssebulime Johnmary, Dean of Studies at St. Lawrence School since 2006 modeled the way for other teachers to benefit from our Teacher Sponsorship Program. His Diploma in Gender and Development prepared him, in addition to his other teaching responsibilities, to provide counseling and guidance to our school students. With a loan from our microfinance program he purchased iron sheets for a new roof for his home. Ssebulime Johnmary is happy at St. Lawrence School and has big dreams for the future resulting from CAL Uganda's educational support. Whose next? This year two of our teachers, thanks to the Teachers Sponsorship Program, have applied to government institutions to attain an advanced degree by attending weekend and holiday courses to begin this Ausust.

STUDENTS TALKING TO STUDENTS Art Teacher Sara Pavao of Emma Havens School launched the school's first cultural sharing with the students of St. Lawrence School. Snowman pictures and letters about snow from third graders are in the mail to Uganda. Carly wrote, "I know you have never seen snow so I am going to tell you about it. Snow feels cold and wet. It is fun to eat snow. When snow touches your tongue it disappears. It is also fun to play in snow. You need snow gear like gloves, a hat, a scarf, a coat, boots and maybe an extra pair of gloves. It's funny to hear snow crunch under your boots. Maybe one day you have a chance to play in the snow too." Jodeci wrote, "Making this photo lets you know how it feels to play in the snow. It is fun. It feels like you are filling up with joy."
