Your Questions About Koi Pond Kits

James asks‌

How many gallons can a pond be with this set? Happy Koi Mini Pond Kit- 4? x 6? http://www.pondliner.com/product/happy_koi_mini_pond_kit_4_x_6/happy_koi_mini_pond_kits @ happy master im only calling it by what the sellers are calling it. less unnecessary confusion the better the world how many gallons is in a 10 foot by 11 foot pond ? sorry no depth included pond liner 10 x 11 feet? how many gallons?

timreeves1043 answers: Probably should just ask the sellers to be sure. That being said‌. One cubic foot is equal to 7.4805 US Gallons, -6.2288 Imperial Gallons if you plan for its stated size 8x10x2 =360 cubic feet , so somewhat over 2000 gallons. Have fun. Edit:

previous poster… I did not look close enough… The liner included the depth? 4x6x2…= 48 cubic feet under 400 gallons. Yeah an aquarium in the ground. My mistake.

Lisa asks…

What are the logistics required to take readings of water? Can anyone please help me with this? Besides the data logger and a recording sheet, what are the logistics (meaning apparatus/equipment) required to take readings of water (from a Koi Pond, Tap water, and Distilled water)?

timreeves1043 answers: What readings do you want to take? Ammonia? Nitrates? Nitrites? PH? For those, you can get a liquid test kit at any pet store.

Jenny asks…

How do you build a pond? How do you build a pond, we have already dug a hole and laid down like this tarp stuff and put rocks surrounding it, but do you need a pump? How do you keep the water clean? We would like to out fish in it so any ideas on that too? I meant we would like to put fish in the pond as well!

timreeves1043 answers: If you actually put a tarp in it it will deteriorate very quickly. Yes you should use EPDM pond liner, with a geotextile underlayment to prevent critters from burrowing under the liner and to protect the liner from dislodged stones, you need a pump, a skimmer if it’s a large pond, and having a UV biological filter will keep the water clear. I have koi, goldfish, shebunkins and 2 perch . They get along nicely. The link below will give you an idea of the things you’ll need they are the pond kits that come with everything. The link below is the home page. Http://www.azponds.com/ Don’t use news papers, roofing felt or rugs as underlayment because they decompose quickly leaving the liner without protection. Geotextile underlayment this has a 20 to 25 year life expectancy. Http://www.123ponds.com/underlayment.html Good Luck enjoy your pond. EDITED: #1 research the job before you finish it #2. If you put koi in the pond you’ll need a oxygenator because they use more oxygen. Koi need a lot of oxygen, almost as much as we do when resting. Http://www.coloradokoi.com/koi_oxygen.htm

Ken asks…

Is a pump and filter kit for fish pond neccesary? Does it help keep the pond clean. My pond is 7×10. I have 2 fish in there would it still work having them in there? They can’t get sucked up in the filter?

timreeves1043 answers: You probably don’t need a filter on a small pond like that. As long as you have plants it should stay clean and keep in balance. However, if you mean to say “clear” instead of clean then that’s different. For instance, if you have trees nearby the leaves will fall into the water and make it dark. Your filter won’t be able to handle leaves unless you can remove all the leaves. The fish probably won’t get sucked into the filter intake. The flow is too slow and the fish are smarter than that. You don’t really want a really clean pond anyway. Your fish (I’m assuming Koi or gold fish) will live off of algae in the pond so they won’t need food. However, if you filter the water you filter out the food. I recommend skipping the filter and investing in some lily pads or some other ornamental plants.

Who knows maybe some frogs will move in and you can listen to them croak all night. OH! One more thing. Make sure you put a log or something in the pond so that it acts as a ramp out of the pond. If animals should fall in they can get stuck and drown. My parents have a pond and a skunk fell in and couldn’t get out. It killed all the fish!

What do you need to build an above ground pond? I wanted to know what was needed to build an above ground pond for my koi fish? I just wanted a circular, round pound, lined with cement blocks I know I need things such as a skimmer, etc. But please let me know!

timreeves1043 answers: They have pond kits, you can also build a circular dirt or sand dam, and lay a plastic liner in it to hold water. Buy a kiddie pool, and landscape dirt and grass up to it.
