Your Questions About Natural Ponds Uk
Sharon asks…
How many, and wat species can i keep in my outdoor pond? I have 4 comet goldfish and 1 paradise fish in my pond already. It holds 180 litres (40 UK gallons, 48 US GALLONS approx.) water. Compatible species. Can i equip pond with any more fish? The paradise fish has been in the pond for about 12 months, and i live in australia, so no racoons or possums in my area (there are possums here but not in my area) ok. sorry, i have a fountain incorporated with a filter which circulates n aerates the water
timreeves1043 answers: Depends on how the pond is set up and what filtration it has. If it’s not filtered, you can add a few more goldfish but not many. Remember they will grow and even comets can get pretty good sized and if happy in the outdoor pond, will grow fast as they scarf up bugs and other stuff along with fish food and the natural sunlight. I’m not sure a paradise fish will do well in an unheated pond and it may nip and tear up your goldfish. You can add any cooler water fish, but be aware the goldfish may eat some (like guppies and white clouds). Fancy goldfish like to be outside and I put mine out in my ponds during the summer (I bring them in in winter because of the extreme cold). Shubukin are an attractive type of goldfish that are hardy as well. Edit: You may want to monitor water temp to see what the mean temperature hovers at. You don’t want it too warm for goldfish. Watch that the paradise fish isn’t nipping fins, also. If the

water is over 65 (F) you could put live bears like sword tails in (the bright colors would be easier to see). If it’s in full sun, you will also want to provide some shade (either in or out of the pond). Floating plants (frogbit, water lettuce, lilies) work and driftwood and/or over hanging slate also look nice as well as providing shade. Changing part of the water regularly will also keep everyone happier (I have well water, and just run the hose in my upper pond and let it over flow.) But, I would stick with either goldfish or tropical fish as you may end up with more work and trouble by mixing them.

What is the best place to plant a tree, without it being chopped down when you die? I grow giant redwood trees as a hobby. I tried planting them out in a forest in south east england before and did not have much success. I think deer ate them. I have grown several from seed. My oldest that I have in a 50 liter pot is just over a year old and 20cm tall, very wide. I plan to keep this one, with me when I move house one day. I want to know where I can plant others I grow, being likely that if not looked after, they will at least be avoided, to grow. I don’t really want to sell them online, because they will probably be turned into bonzai trees. By mass it is the largest tree in the world and can live to 2000 years old. Is there any national parks in the UK which allow you to plant a tree and promise to try not to cut it down in the future?

Thanks for advice. UK.
timreeves1043 answers: As I am on the opposite side of the pond, you will need to find who in the UK does the things I am suggesting. The Boy Scouts plant trees over here and if they do the same in the UK, they might let you also plant a tree or two. Another group to ask would be your Ministry of Natural Resources, or whoever looks after timber lands and harvest rights. Your local municipality may also be willing to let you plant some trees in a local park, especially if you paid the cost and provided whatever maintenance would be needed for the rest of your life. Since you are talking about a North American tree, there might be some concerns about letting them grow in the wild and there relationship with native trees. Good idea you have so go for it.

how do you identify sexes in koi or goldfish? i have a koi/goldfish pond and my fish have done exceptionally well, they seem very healthy and have grown from 1 1/2? in length, to about 10? in approximately 1 year. i would like to provide a natural enviornment for breeding purposes. what do i need for this to happen? how long before i see results under the right conditions?
timreeves1043 answers: Just take a look at their vent, females have outies and males have innies. Males, during breeding season, will have breeding tubercles on their gills covers and on the front rays of their pectoral fins. Here is a site with pics to help you out, http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

How do I get rid of Pond Algae? I have tried all sorts of chemical algae removers, but none work! I also don’t want to resort to anything that will harm the plants and fish in the pond because every year there are frog eggs all over the pond. Can anyone suggest a natural way I can permanently, or for a very long time remove and prevent algae?
timreeves1043 answers: Remove the causes of Algae and you will reduce the infestation that you get – Algae needs lights and nutrients to grow. OK, so some ponds can’t be shaded more, but consider how you could shade, and prevent run-off from ground that’s nearby, which will contain nutrients. There are several non-chemical Algae treatments on the market that work to inhibit Algae, some depending upon the type that you want to get rid off. One of the biggest problems is blanket weed, which is a really fine filamentous algae. Cloverleaf’s Blanket Answer is a mix of enzymes and minerals, and works really well – http://www.blagdonwatergardens.co.uk/cloverleaf-blanket-answer_12.htm I also use Nishikoi ‘Goodbye Green Water’, which is again chemical free. Http://www.koibitz.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=378 Blanket weed can be removed by using sticks etc, and twirling around them. Otherwise it

decays, adding further nutrients into the water. Ensure that all plant dead plant debris is also removed, else you’ll get the same issue. Beware of fallen autumn leaves, perhaps covering with a net, to prevent them getting into your water. Overall, look around – there are chemical free treatments to use to rid ponds of Algae. Lastly, consider adding other plants that could compete with the Algae for nutrients. Water lilies block sun from the Algae below, as their pads cover the surface well too. But any pond plant will absorb nutrients. Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
