There are many opportunities to take part in additional activities through the Students’ Association and our learners frequently play a major part in local charity, sports, recreational and cultural activities. Coleg Powys sends more people to university than any other institution in Powys and the achievements of our students are a constant source of pride to us. Many of our students achieve triple Distinctions and Distinction Stars (equivalent to grade A and A* at A Level.). Further, many more gain the qualifications to start-up businesses or to take up financially and personally rewarding craft based professions. The College has fantastic recreational facilities. “Themes Restaurant” is located on the Newtown site and is a working restaurant staffed solely by students who train in all aspects of the hospitality industry. We were particularly proud to host the Powys Business Awards, as the event gave us an opportunity to demonstrate the standards of excellence that our students regularly achieve. The restaurant is often used by the many visitors who experience top class entertainment at Hafren.

What the students say

I did a year at sixth form before deciding that this wasn’t the right route for me and then went on to the Health & Social Care course at Coleg Powys. I have really enjoyed my time at the College, as I have made new friends and was given the opportunity to do work experience in Bulgaria for two weeks which I loved. I took this route to get into midwifery, which I am studying at Chester University from September.

WHAT WILL WE PROVIDE FOR YOU?

I had a job in a pub and enjoyed the catering side, so decided that I would like to pursue this. I came to the induction evening at the College and thought the facilities looked really good so decided to study here. I have really enjoyed my first year as you get to experience being in a real restaurant. It has also helped me to get 5 jobs in catering through the summer. I am returning in September to do a follow up course.

Where are they now? Former Art & Design Level 3 BTEC National Diploma student CHRIS CHAPMAN progressed to University College Falmouth to study 3D Design for Sustainability. On completion of his degree he soon got a job with a company called ‘Sea-Communications’, a design and innovations agency. Chris said, “The course at Coleg Powys was exactly what I was looking for; a high level of creative freedom, fantastic facilities and a well balanced mix of tutors. The amount and quality of the one on one tutoring during my time on the course, was quite frankly the best I have experienced in my education to date.”

On completion of the Business BTEC National Diploma NIK MALIN went on to Aberystwyth University to study Business and Management. Speaking of his time at the College Nik said, “I could not have asked for anything better. The facilities were very good with much needed access to computers and comfortable chairs, nice canteen and a huge library. The best thing for me was the experience that I obtained during the two years of study. The pleasant atmosphere and professional lecturers made the educational path very smooth and worth studying.”

Former Health & Social Care BTEC National Diploma student ANNIKA WALTERS-DAVIES went on to the University of Huddersfield to study Midwifery. She is now working as a Midwife within the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust. When asked what was the best thing about studying at Coleg Powys Annika said, “Making new friends who are now friends for life and also having the opportunity to learn so many new things and go on work experience, which I particularly enjoyed and feel that it prepared me for my next step to university. Also, just being able to be your own person, be treated as an adult and having responsibilities, whilst at the same time having fun and a great time.”

Triple Distinctions In 2012 46 of our BTEC National Diploma students achieved triple Distinctions or higher, which gave them at least 360 UCAS points (the equivalent of 3 A Levels at grade ‘A’). 27 students achieved triple Distinctions, 10 students got triple Distinction Stars and a further 9 students achieved a combination of the two. Distinctions and Distinction Stars are equal to grade A and A* at A Level. These students covered a wide range of subject areas.

SUSTAINABILITY Coleg Powys achieved the Level 2 Green Dragon Environmental Standard in December 2009 and is now busy working towards the Level 3 standard. As part of the preparation for achieving the environmental standard the College introduced its own “sustainability policy” which you can find on the website. In this policy the College outlines its targets for reducing its carbon footprint. The College has made good progress in meeting these targets but needs your help to keep the momentum going.

Sport at Coleg Powys At Coleg Powys we believe sport and recreation play an important part in the overall well-being of students and their educational experience. The College actively encourages students to take part in sporting activities on Wednesday afternoons and it has teams in rugby, track and field, hockey, football and netball for those who wish to participate in competitive sport. At the Brecon site learners benefit from having a Cardiff Blues performance centre for talented U/19 rugby players and the U/19 Powys Hub in association with Welsh Netball. These require leaners to invest significant time in training and development programmes alongside their academic study. The site has a strong sport enrichment programme, where learners can participate in football and hockey, as well as other competitive and non-competitive sports through the 5 x 30 Officer on site. Sport and exercise is not just for those who want to compete, learners are encouraged to exercise in order to improve their health and well-being and to give them a mind set for success in their academic studies. At Newtown, a football academy has been developed in partnership with Newtown Football Club for both boys and girls. The College is affiliated to ‘Welsh Colleges Sport’. Numerous students have achieved national honours in different sports through this affiliation. In addition, many of the College teams have achieved notable successes on a local and national scale.

Things that you can do to help the College keep reducing its carbon footprint are Reduce energy consumption – turning off lights, computers, monitors and other electrical items when not in use and reporting faults that you come across Recycle – use the bins provided for cans, bottles and paper Avoid wasting paper – think before you print!! Use College/public service transport to and from College whenever possible or car share Coleg Powys is committed to creating a more sustainable environment for its learners and staff but recognises that it can only achieve this with everyone’s support.
