The Newport Schools’ Dance Festival was established over seventeen years ago and takes place annually, over four evenings. It was originally set up by Newport City Council’s P.E. Advisory Service, to showcase the fantastic dance and P.E. work which takes place in Newport Schools, and also to give pupils the opportunity to perform on a professional stage. Over the past seventeen years, the Dance Festival has continued to grow and last year, saw more than six hundred pupils, from over twenty-five of Newport’s Schools, involved. Each year, teachers and pupils work extremely hard to come up with a range of stunning costumes and outstanding dance routines, resulting in four incredible evenings of entertainment for all. Bob blwyddyn mae’r athrawon a’r disgyblion yn gweithio nerth deg ewin i gynhyrchu amrywiaeth o wisgoedd syfrdanol ac actau dawns eithriadol, ac o ganlyniad tair noson anhygoel o ddifyrrwch i bawb. £TBC

21st Anniversary Tour – Welcome To The Carnevil

TUESDAY 23 FEBRUARY, 7.30PM DYDD MAWRTH 23 CHWEFROR, 7.30YH

The show that stormed into the finals of Britain’s Got Talent and is now a West End smash is back to mark its 21st Anniversary in spectacular style. The latest incarnation, ‘Welcome to the Carnevil’ is set in Victorian London in 1899. Jack the Ripper was still at large and this was the age of the Freakshow. A young girl dreamt of running away to join the Circus only to see her dream become a nightmare in a decrepit and corpse ridden Carnevil, plagued by a swamp of Killer Klowns, Sword Swallowers, Demon Dwarfs, Death Deifying Aerialists, a Guinness World Record holding Hairculian Diva swinging solely from her hair, back flipping & fire limbo-ing acrobats and lots, lots more. A show ruled by the undead and climaxing in an awesome flaming apocalypse. The story twists and turns with grisly murders and sensational shocks – all interwoven with some of the greatest and most bizarre circus acts on earth, performed by an almighty cast with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek and the devil driven rock ‘n’ roll of Dr Haze & The Interceptors from Hell. If Quentin Tarantino had directed Cirque Du Soleil then you would be only half way there. Weird science meets hip-hop in a dance double bill that is out of this world… In an evening of dance, comedy and extremes this double bill takes audiences on a journey from the bottom of the sea to the far reaches of the universe. Swedish/Canadian B-boy and B-girl duo Emmanuelle Leˆ Phan and Elon Höglund aka Tentacle Tribe, bring their production Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid to Wales in a performance inspired by creatures of land and sea. These dynamic street-dancers have sold out all over the world and their celebrated creature feature makes one half of this thrilling, fun and enlightening evening of dance. The Wonders of the Universe from Wales’ Karol Cysewski is another kettle of fish (a pre-historic fish) offering a humorous and stimulating interpretation of the documentary of the same title. Three geeks and a celebrity scientist (voice over by Brian Cox) take an imaginative look at the origins of the universe. Both performances will make you think, laugh and look at the world in a different way. From tiny creatures of the sea and sky, some downright fishy things that make us human, to all the wonders of the universe. Gwyddoniaeth ryfedd yn cwrdd â hip-hop mewn rhaglen ddawns ddwbl sy’n benigamp. In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. He was 56 years old. Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more. The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Bale as ‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas that celebrates the man and the legend. With the blessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one man show will explore the life of a man who was as fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it. Sinfonia Cymru Sinfonia Cymru presents a lively and exhilarating programme of music. Stravinsky’s Danse Concertante, originally written for the concert stage but also performed as a one act ballet, is a great example of the composer’s invigorating style. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, his only violin concerto, is a bright and lyrical piece which has become one of the most popular works for violin. Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 in C ‘Jupiter’ was the composer’s last symphony and it is often viewed as his greatest. The concert features New Zealand born Benjamin Baker on violin.

Its destruction makes way for a privately guarded shopping centre. What do you do? If you are Mr and Mrs Clark you start a campaign. In collaboration with the Newport art activists Bosch and with the guidance of the artist Andre Stitt, Mr and Mrs Clark developed a timeline of performances in public spaces that now make up a theatre show. They call it Smash It Up. Short-listed for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Smash It Up is a destructive plea for some cultural conservationism. It is a challenging demand for equality, for hope and for greater creative freedom and beyond all for an understanding and nurturing of the creative imagination. “Mr and Mrs Clark unleash a wild and often
