Hailed as one of the best music line-ups to come to Cardiff, we’re immensely proud of the success of our inaugural Festival of Voice in June. It was an exciting first for us here at the Centre and an important milestone in our commitment to bring the best of the world to Wales. If you attended one of the 100 world-class festival events across the city, thank you for your support. This year, Cardiff celebrates one of its most famous sons, Roald Dahl, and of course, we’re at the heart of the festivities. From August to January, we’ll be giving a new home to The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl (pg. 6-7), an interactive journey through the extraordinary life of the beloved writer. On 17 and 18 September, you can see the city through the storyteller’s eyes in Roald Dahl’s City of the Unexpected (pg. 8-9). We’re keeping the exciting details under our hat, behind our back and in our granny’s tightly zipped handbag; you’ll have to be there to see the weird and wonderful happenings we have planned! As well as all that, we’re delighted to be co-creating a unique take on Roald Dahl’s short stories for adults, Wonderman (pg. 36-37), and we’ll also be welcoming Ballet Cymru’s performance of Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs (pg.35). A gloriumptious season! We’re excited to present our latest brochure which is bursting with some of the world’s most popular musicals and operas, powerful dramas, spine-tingling dance, laugh-out-loud comedy and pure theatrical magic – all from internationally renowned and truly exceptional companies and performers. Your support means that we can continue to bring the very best in art, culture and creativity to Wales – and for this, we are grateful. We look forward to welcoming you to the Centre very soon.

Wales Millennium Centre and Cape Town Opera present

Mandela Trilogy Featuring Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and 12 ensemble Music by Peter Louis van Dijk & Mike Campbell Written and directed by Michael Williams

A celebration of Nelson Mandela through music and song. If think you know Nelson Mandela – think again. In this colourful celebration of the man who touched the hearts and minds of people around the world, the amazing life of Nelson Mandela is brought vividly to the stage by Cape Town Opera. Performed by a company of over 60 South African performers, this moving show charts the uplifting story of Mandela’s transformation from freedom fighter to president. The upbeat jazz and swing-influenced songs of Sophiatown in the central section of the piece are framed on either side by musical styles more familiar in contemporary opera - with a dash of authentic Xhosa folk music that grounds the production in its African roots. From tribal initiation rites on the banks of the Mbashe River, through the heady and rebellious jazz-fuelled days in Sophiatown, to incarceration and reflection on Robben Island and finally beyond, to freedom - this is the story of one of the world’s most iconic figures.

Macbeth

The Merchant of Venice

Verdi

André Tchaikowsky UK première

10, 15, 17 & 24 September 2016, 7.15pm Macbeth has blood on his hands. Although he is now king, the crown rests uneasily on his head. Verdi described Macbeth as “one of mankind’s greatest creations”. Fittingly, his thrillingly intense adaptation of this famous play is brooding and ferocious. As ever, we expect the WNO Chorus (there are a number of breath-taking choruses) and Orchestra to throw themselves into Macbeth and create a highly charged evening. From £8.50*

Macbeth is sung in Italian and The Merchant of Venice is sung in English. You can follow these operas with real-time stage translation in Welsh and English.

Welsh National Opera also performs Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate

Turn to page 33 for details.

16 & 30 September 2016, 7pm Shylock is a proud and defiant man. But when he demands a severe debt to be repaid, he becomes a victim of his own intransigence and most seriously, the prejudice of others. Composed by a Jewish man who had endured life in the Warsaw ghetto, The Merchant of Venice is a powerful and serious attack on prejudice but also contains moments of tender beauty. From £8.50*

Free pre-performance talks Explore each opera with a 30 minute introductory talk. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance, alongside your opera booking. 16 – 30s We offer at least 60 best available seats per performance for just £6.50* for those aged between 16 and 30.** Visit wno.org.uk for details.

Ludovico Einaudi: The Elements Tour

Choir of the Year 2016 Grand Final

20 November 2016

3 December 2016

Ludovico Einaudi has quietly become one of the most successful musicians in the world. His hauntingly beautiful and evocative music tops the charts in the UK and Europe, and he was BAFTAnominated for his score of This is England ’86.

Join the six finalists in the UK’s biggest and most prestigious choral competition as they battle it out to take the overall title, Choir of the Year 2016.

His music has been described as minimalist, altclassical, ambient and contemporary, but it defies easy classification.
