We are coming up on the last few weeks of school. Thank you for reading The NewGate Gazette. It means a lot to our team that you care about our community. This month we have some fun and exciting activities planned.
The Arts
by Laney Leichter
During the month of April, the county holds two major community events; “Embracing Our Differences” and the Sarasota Film Festival. The two bring people from all around to see the creation of documentaries and art. Even though they both fall under the Arts category, the two are different, yet the same in some points. At “Embracing Our Differences”, visitors are able to walk around and look at the different art pieces that are created from students around the county, which also have quotes from students. At the film festival, you don’t have as much choice. You choose a film, go to the appropriate viewing room, and you may or may not end up liking the film. In addition, the film that you are seeing might not even be your first choice. Usually, students attend as part of a school group or a parental trip. Both events may not be something you want to do, but what you could do is try to find a positive outlook towards these cultural events. These events are fun in themselves and you just have to look for the positive because by going, not only are you supporting the arts but you’re also getting a cultural education. The exposure to the arts you get from taking the time to see the films and learning where the drawings come from, are valuable experiences that teenagers don’t always appreciate until they are older. So do more research if these events interest you. NewGate Gazette

Bark Park By Jason Giffard When you think of the life of a dog you may think easygoing and peaceful, but for this unlucky pup, that was not the case. He would be born into a desolate planet where dogs and cats were left to inherit the earth. The dogs thrived, creating communities in parks and bringing all the dog food that the humans had left behind. Occasionally, the parks would be attacked by a rogue pack of dogs or hungry cats. “Is it a boy?”, the newborn puppy’s mother asked. “Yes, and congratulations!” the doctor replied. “There is another boy and a girl on the way.” So later that day, the proud parents returned to the park with a total of three brand new puppies. As was the tradition in all of the dog parks, new members were welcomed with a ceremonial party. The fences were decorated with colorful balloons. Upbeat music played and everyone joined in the dancing. Special treats were served and they even had doggie punch. One by one the newest members of the community were introduced. This was the first time their mom and dad announced their names. The first male puppy was led to a pedestal and his parents shout, “Chewy!”. Next it is his sister’s turn. “Lucy!” her parents announce proudly. Last but not least the smallest of the three, the second boy climbs to the top of the pedestal. The crowd anxiously awaits to learn his name. His parents call out, “Spar...RUN!” Suddenly all heads turn at once to the park entrance as ear piercing yowls and hisses erupt from the park entrance. Hundreds of cats are climbing over the gates. They run around the entire park, jumping through the windows of the dog houses. Hungry, almost starving, the desperate felines begin to gobble up any dog food they can find. Recovering from their initial shock, the dogs run to their homes for shelter. The newborn puppies Chewy, Lucy, and Sparky - are safely shepherded to their house by their vigilant parents. “What’s going on?” the puppies cry. There is a cat already in their house eating their food. Mama dog barks loudly at the little cat and he scampers away. “Don’t worry little ones, the cats are simply hungry” says mama. Satisfied by the quick meal they stole form the dogs, the cats slink quickly away. “Revenge! Attack” growl the angry leaders of the dog community. They form a posse and follow the cats to their secret hideout, The Cat Cave. Overpowering the smaller animals, the dogs rush in and search for food to replace what the cats had stolen. After searching the cave thoroughly, the dogs are shocked to realize the cats had no food at all. Not even one bag. NewGate Gazette

“This is why the cats stormed our party today,” cried mama dog. “They were starving, the poor things.” Murmurs of agreement and sympathy echo throughout the cave. “Let’s help them instead of hurting them,” said one of the pack leaders. All of the dogs yipped and yapped. Smiling broadly, the dogs generously offered to share their food and their homes with the cats. “I am overcome with joy!” meowed the leader of the cats. “Thank you, thank you!” The cats came to live with the dogs in Bark Park and despite popular belief to the contrary, the cats and dogs lived together happily ever after.
