Head of School Tim Seldin

Dear Members of the NewGate Community: Ours is an independent, international, Montessori academy. Our mission is to cultivate a love of life and inspire academic excellence. NewGate is proudly independent: NewGate does not seek funding from the state or local government and is proud of its heritage as an independent school. NewGate serves as the Lab School of the Montessori Foundation. A Lab School is a small and very special school run by a university, college, or other educational institution that is used for the development of master teachers and educational leaders, curriculum development, research, and professional development. The Montessori Foundation works with Montessori schools worldwide. NewGate is an international school: More than 31 percent of our enrollment comes from international families, many of whom were drawn to Sarasota by the school. In 2014, after four years of hard work, we were honored to be recognized as an International Baccalaureate World School, and we are now authorized to offer the IB Diploma Program. NewGate is an academy: The word is often misused, as is the name Montessori. At its root, an academy is a way of learning through deep, reflective conversations and shared inquiry, field observation, handson experience, and discovery. NewGate prepares students for both university and life. Since our first high school graduating class in 2004, 99% of our graduates have gone on to succeed in college or university, but we take greatest pride in their character and spirit. As families and friends, you have seen how NewGate nurtures its students' intelligence, curiosity, and imagination, while supporting the

development of their unique talents. The school instills universal values and a global perspective, teaches citizenship, and encourages an entrepreneurial spirit. The 2014-15 school year was a watershed for NewGate School in four key areas: 1. Enrollment: Our enrollment continued to grow and we essentially reached the capacity of our current Ashton Road facilities. The time has come to plan for expansion. 2. Finances: NewGate ended the year with a cash surplus of $50,390. While this may not seem like a large amount, it represents five years of carefully monitoring and reducing expenses while building the community of students, families, and staff. 3. Fundraising: Contributions to school continued to increase to $172,683, and we reestablished the tradition of our annual Gala. 4. Accreditation: In 2014-15, we were reaccredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/AdvancedEd and awarded full accreditation by the International Montessori Council. These accomplishments, in addition to the prior year’s recognition as an International Baccalaureate (IB) School, help position NewGate in a unique niche in Sarasota’s private school market, which will serve us well in years to come. This new school year is off to a grand start. Thank you all for your ongoing support over the last 32 years. Together, we are NewGate. With warm regards,

Tim Seldin Head, NewGate School President, The Montessori Foundation

Dear NewGate Community: Welcome back! I am excited to begin this new school year. This will be my first year as Associate Head of the NewGate School, lab school of The Montessori Foundation. The 2014-15 school year was a year of transition and professional growth for me as I assumed the position as Co-Associate Head of School at NewGate.

Robin Howe

Throughout the last five years, I have taught at several different levels at NewGate. During the 2014-15 year, I had one foot in my Upper Elementary classroom and the other in the office. This allowed me to assure myself that my class was clearly in capable hands with Ms. Jacki and Ms. Jennie, while also learning from Lorna McGrath the essential administrative tasks and procedures that are necessary for NewGate to run smoothly and efficiently. Most people at NewGate know me. If you are new to NewGate, let’s get acquainted.

Every year at NewGate, since 1990, has been unforgettable and life enhancing for me in my roles as mother of two NewGate students and as a professional Montessorian! In 2014-2015, I transitioned from full-time Associate Head of School to a part-time position working for The Montessori Foundation. I am so grateful to be able to work for the Foundation on the NewGate Campus. It’s the best of both world’s for me.

Board of Trustees 2014-15 Board of Trustees

A Note from Our Chair

Andrew Cutler, MD, Chair President Florida Clinical Research Center, LLC Sarasota, FL

Andrew Cutler, MD

Kathy Leitch, Treasurer Founder, Renaissance Montessori School, Ft. Myers, FL

Dear Fellow Members of the NewGate Community, I am proud to serve as Chair of the Board of NewGate School and to be able to report truly exciting news about what we accomplished in the past year. Together with NewGate’s outstanding and visionary administration and the national Montessori leaders and educators who make up our Board, we are responsible for ensuring that NewGate makes wise fiscal decisions and carefully safeguards our school's resources and assets. I can assure you that we take these responsibilities very seriously. While we are a relatively small school and community, we do such amazing things every day. Lorna's letter provides a comprehensive summary, but what stands out to me as a parent and Board member is the breadth and depth of activities and opportunities that we provide to our students. At a time when many schools are cutting back on the arts, music, extra-curricular activities, we are constantly looking for ways to expand our learning experiences to offer our students more. It is clear that we have accomplished incredible things in the past year, and we have ambitious plans. We plan to improve and expand our facilities to provide an even better environment for our students and faculty and to accommodate our burgeoning population. We want to offer even more experiences and opportunities. Watch for our Annual Campaign information that outlines some specific projects we hope, with your continuing support, to fund this year.

Annual Giving / Fundraising For the 2014-2015 school year, NewGate raised $172,683 through donations and special fundraising events. The Annual Campaign’s major goal is to provide additional funding for school programs. Because tuition dollars alone do not cover the full cost of our students’ educational experience, our Annual Fund is essential to allow us to continue to provide funding for ordinary expenses and special programs that distinguish NewGate’s quality of excellence. This Annual Report is our opportunity to acknowledge and thank everyone who gave so generously during the 2014-15 school year.
