INSTITUTE FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT

Power market research Energy System Analysis expert team looks for solutions to issues concerning the transition to sustainable and flexible energy infrastructure. The electric power industry is undergoing a major transformation in the Region as well as in Europe. It is changing from a vertically integrated industry in which generation transmission and distribution system in a geographical region were owned by single entities with tight coordination of the planning, scheduling, and operations of these industry components. The vertically integrated utility of the past has being replaced by multiple players and is based on dispersed ownership, providing unbundled services using market-oriented decision-making. As new technologies emerge, we may see further evolution in the industry structure as well as in the planning, scheduling and operational activities. In addition, markets are facing challenges of adapting to new regulatory requirements that address climate change and energy security. Therefore, the primary research goal of the Institute is to focus on short to medium term issues concerning the interaction between the technical and economic aspects of the restructured industry given the current technological landscape. In particular, it is focus on a new market based paradigm that will replace the traditional functional timeline leading from years to cycles prior to real time, which includes long term demand forecasting, capacity planning and expansion, maintenance, short term forecasting, scheduling, dispatch, and real time control. The research in this sector emphasizes the design and analysis of market institutions, mechanisms and computational tools that will facilitate coordination, efficient investment, operational efficiency, and system reliability, while recognizing the economic and technical realities of the electric power industry.

Environmental controls The Institute helps developed technology solutions to reduce pollutions as mercury and other organic and inorganic hazardous air pollutants emitted from fossil fuel plants. Its research aims to reduce CO2 emissions by optimizing fossil fuel combustion in a manner that minimizes impacts on power plant operations and performances. In that purpose, the Institute use analytical tools, databases, monitoring technologies, guidelines, and best practices that will help the industry to reduce risks and to evaluate and implement technology options to achieve environmental performance goals that are cost effective.

Environment and society The Institute’s research takes place in the area of the link between engineering, science and policy for environmental quality and its impact to quality of life. The interdisciplinary nature of this work addresses the need to manage environmental resources more sustainably. Therefore, the Institute focus on analyzing and elaborating the empirical evidence base that policymakers need to make effective policy decisions, refining the concepts and contributing to the debates that frame and provide justifications for policy reform in the environmental issues. We work across disciplinary and theoretical boundaries to tackle a range of complex policy challenges such as climate change, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, ecosystem services valuation.

Mines and environment There are many research’s conducted on the environmental impact of mines. The Institute’s current research in this area includes wastewater management, mine waste management including tailings and discharges, environmental and social impact assessment and the geological long-term effects of mining. Great efforts has been undertaken to manage land that has been mined previously, and to clean up mines from years’ past.

26

Mine planning In the mining business, mine-planning is the activity that determines the exploitation of a mineral resource with the aim of maximizing its essential value. The number of variables that are required to carry out this activity and the complexity of dealing with a finite, non-renewable resource make it difficult to find an optimum solution. Thus, Mine Planning group primarily focus in its research on solving these issues by planning the future deep mining operations and mathematical programming to optimize the production scheduling and planning process.
