Free Birds (2013) For the younger members of the clan gathering for turkey day this bird’s tale follows Reggie, a gobbler who goes from outcast to hero when he receives a presidential pardon and embarks on a time-traveling mission to try and turn Thanksgiving into a turkey-free holiday. Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Amy Poehler, George Takai and Woody Harrelson, this animated turkey movie will have you giving thanks you decided to wait and watch it after the big meal.
Pocahontas (1995) Most of us have had the privilege of seeing this Disney animated classic, but for those who haven’t, Pocahontas is about a romance between an English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief in the seventeenth century. Pocahontas was Disney’s first animated film to be based on real historical figures, and it takes place in "The New World" as the English settlers come to America for the first time. It echoes the first Thanksgiving meal, where the pilgrims and Native Americans were said to have shared a turkey meal, symbolic of their apparent cordiality. With its vivacious animation, catchy ballads, and enchanting storyline, this Thanksgiving animated movie is great to watch with the whole family.
Mouse on the Mayflower (1968) The Mouse on the Mayflower is a 1968 animated Thanksgiving television special created by Rankin/Bass. This Thanksgiving animated movie is a tale that begins with the ship Mayflower being caught up in a big storm. A church mouse named William tells the story from a mouse viewpoint. He begins with the decision by the pilgrims preacher to move to America, and the packing of the Mayflower. A disaster at sea threatens to sink the ship, but William the pilgrim mouse has an idea to save the ship. The pilgrims land safely and write the Mayflower Compact. They begin to build their new colony and church, but it is already Fall and they do not have enough food stored. The winter is so harsh and food so limited that many pilgrims do not live through the winter. The pilgrims learn to plant crops in the Spring, and in the Fall celebrate with a big feast, the first Thanksgiving. William also scuttles a plan to blame the Indians for an attack on the pilgrims.
Garfield: Holiday Celebrations (DVD) (2004) Three cartoons featuring the holiday adventures of the lazy, lovable, Garfield. First, Garfield and Odie get stuck in a haunted house populated by spectral pirates in “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure.” “A Garfield Christmas” features Garfield and Odie home alone while Jon visits Grandma on the farm. Jon has a hot date for Thanksgiving dinner in “Garfield’s Thanksgiving” when Liz the veterinarian agrees to come over. Meanwhile, Garfield’s on a preparatory diet to get ready for the feast.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) An Emmy-award winning special, with Charlie Brown in charge of the Thanksgiving dinner where everyone drops by unexpectedly. In the special, lead character Charlie Brown finds himself depressed despite the onset of the cheerful holiday season. Lucy suggests he direct a school Christmas play, but he is both ignored and mocked by his peers.
