Saigon is still such a special city with so many different experiences to offer, although it is more commercialized nowadays with global food chains starting to leave their footprints here. You’ll have to venture off the beaten track from time to time in order to discover some of its hidden gems. It is really fun to explore the city on your own in order to find these diamonds in the rough. But if you don’t have much time, here are a few to get you started! Saigon has so many sites to see – from Ben Thanh Market, to the War Remnants Museum to the Central Post Office. But these places are the most common and are overly touristy. What should you do if you want to avoid the crowds? Here we will introduce you to some of Saigon’s best off-the-beaten-path locations so you will be able to experience a totally different version of this dynamic city.

offTHE BEATEN PATH In this city of almost 10 million, you have plenty of ways to spend your time and money. There are so many amazing excursions, tours and places vying for your dollars, so it can be difficult to stray off the tourist-beaten path, but it is worthwhile. Here are 11 things to do if you want to break away from the herds of other foreigners tourists.
colonial period, which includes not only widely known spots such as Saigon Post Office, Saigon Notre-Dame and Gia Long Palace, but also unheralded bygone cafe-apartments (which can be run down buildings or former high-ranking government officials’ houses during the colonial time) at No. 26 Ly Tu Trong, No. 14 Ton That Dam or No. 42 Nguyen Hue.
Ho Chi Minh City‘s neighbourhoods were shaped by the colonial period, industrialisation and urban revivals. Among 24 districts, we pick up the coolest areas with its distinctive feels and their highlights include heritage buildings, creative vibes and thriving upscale spots
As the district is brimming with skyscrapers and luxury hotels, don’t forget to drop yourself at a rooftop bar overlooking the urban landscape, the Saigon river and the bustling traffic, all of it lighting up in hallucinatory shimmer once the sun goes down. The nightlife scene is more vibrant when the crowds head to backpack streets and enjoy some late-night eats with both locals and foreigners tourists..

District 1 houses most of Saigon’s historical landmarks, from classic French architecture to preserved wreckages of American war planes. Whether you’re exploring on foot or opting for a cyclo tour, make sure you visit the Reunification Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral on Nguyen Du Street, the War Remnants Museum on Vo Van Tan Street, the Museum of Ho Chi Minh City on Ly Tu Trong Street, the History Museum on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street, and the ornate Saigon Post Office on Cong Xa Paris If you’re a first-time visitor and don’t have the luxury of a week-long holiday in Saigon, it’s crucial to bypass some not-so-important tourist attractions and activities to make the most out of your short stay to North Vietnam From partying at a swanky rooftop club to crawling through tight tunnels dating back to the Vietnam War, read on for our comprehensive guide on what to see and do in Saigon in two days to North Vietnam in 1975.
“Xich Lo” (Prounounced Sik-lo) was the most popular transportation means in Vietnam in the past, but is now a representation of the Vietnamese way of life. Since the French time, the Xich Lo was used as luxury transportation for French people in Vietnam and for a small number of Vietnamese noble at that time. Xich Lo drivers stood as a symbol of hard working subservients under French occupation. Until the early 1990s, Xich Lo transport still was very popular, Vietnamese people found it useful as a Xich Lo could carry two people plus goods. It was cost effective and with its small size could fit perfectly on Vietnam city alleys and narrow streets. After the ‘motorbike storm’ in Vietnam, the Xich Lo became redundant, people needed to travel further and faster. The Xich Lo did not meet their demands. At this time, the Xich Lo was used mostly for cargo, goods, short transfers and deliveries. Traveling to Vietnam, try Xich Lo once, this is a great way to feel the local life, see the cities from different angles and encourage Vietnamese Xich Lo to remain as a true cultural icon.

Despite having been “open since last August, Saigoneers who were eager to try out the waterborne form of transport were turned away by staff at the line’s District 1 terminal since the river buses were still on trial. At the time, only the two end stations of the route were completely built. However, this time transport officials seem positive that the service can launch in November.

BUS STATION Saigon’s Ben Thanh bus terminal is the next city landmark slated for demolition in order to make way for District 1’s metro construction. Last February, Saigoneers were saddened to bid adieu to the iconic Quach Thi Trang Square, which has since been fenced off. Recently, according to Tuoi Tre, city authorities announced that starting next Monday, the main structure of the Ben Thanh bus station will be torn down to accommodate the next phase of metro construction. The newspaper added that the new station will be located on Ham Nghi Street, just 200 meters away from the original terminal. The new structure is expected to have six bus stops and a public bathroom. For the moment, passengers will have to make use of temporary facilities until construction of the new terminal begins
