Author's note

In January 2011, in the wake of the Tunisian revolution and in the midst of the Egyptian revolution, Yemeni students and youth began a yearlong revolution to oust the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh, president for the past thirty years. More than 2,000 people were killed and more than 22,000 people were wounded.

Tawakkol Karman, founder and leader of Women Journalists without Chains, emerged as a prominent leader for the revolutionary student youth.

On January 16, 2011, two days after protesters in Tunisia forced dictator Zine Al Abideen Ben Ali to step down, Karman called for a demonstration in support of Tunisia. Student and youth leaders from Sanaa University. Demonstrators marched to the Tunisian Embassy, while some called on Saleh to resign.

Tawakkol Karman was arrested in January 22nd. Two hundred youth marched to the university. Al Ansi was arrested, but the Prosecutor General ordered his release because of his status as a lawyer. He refused to go until all youth were released, along with Karman, who was released later that day. Tawakkol Karman got nobel peace prize in 10 December 2011. 3

Arresting Tawakkol Karman “My husband, Mohammad, was driving to our house at night, I was next to him in the front seat, lights were hard to find, coldness was freezing the smallest part of my body. I took a deep breath and that was when I heard something, something familiar....

Four police cars surrounded our small, grey Suzuki car, a policeman stood next to the car’s window and asked Muhammad for his driving licence and passport “ Are you looking for him or me?” I asked. “ I know you want me.” Strong foot steps were getting closer, two policemen grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the car."Citizens wake up, wake up the kidnaped Tawakkol Karman." I started shouting and knocking on the car.

On the way to jail, I whispered to one of the policemen “ Can you do me a favour that I won’t forget for the rest of my life? I just want you to call my family, tell them where I am and that I’m okay. Please!” I gave him a card with my family’s home number and address.

They took me to women’s prison. There was five rooms with six beds in each of them. Room one was for Ordinary crimes, room two was for bigger crimes, but the dangerous rooms where room four and five. A woman slid her huge hand through the prison’s bars holding a small mirror reflecting on me “Who’s there?” I heard a man’s voice coming from Room four. “Bring her, bring her here and I will show her.” the same woman kept talking. The policemen refused putting me with those women. I started laughing. “ why is she laughing?” one of the prisoners asked “maybe she is drunk.” her friend answered.

Do you know what’s my accusation? I didn’t kill and I didn’t steal. You kidnapped me, made me wear prisoners clothes and take me to a prison full of criminals for fighting for your, your freedom. I was arrested in room 1 my roommates were, a woman that was caught killing her husband, a large woman was also caught killing, she killed her father’s wife and burned her the other two stall gold. When I got arrested Al Ansi was arrested too but the Prosecutor General ordered his release because of his status as a lawyer. He refused to go until all youth were released, along with me and I was released the day after.”
