Foreword The Korean Peninsula became independent from Japan on August 15th, 1945 after 36 years of colonization. However, Soviet army occupied the northern part of Korea while the US army took the South right after Korea was independent. Soon communists started taking over Northern Korea and Southern Korea was led by democratic government. Korea was almost split to two countries with the border at 38-degree latitude. Both parties couldn’t unite their thoughts and finally, South Korea did their own election and became another country on May 10th, 1948. Two years later, the North Korea started to threat South Korea and South activated an emergency alert immediately. But South released the alert when North Korea made a peaceful gesture on June 24th, 1950. And on the very next day, North Korea invaded South Korea in the dawn and the war began.

The Prologue of the War It was June 25th, 1950. Since it was Sunday, I waited for my father to come and get me to the farm. I was excited to work with our bull. Soon, father came, but his face was so red and made the rough breath. I asked, “What’s the matter?” “North Korea declared the WAR!” It was unbelievable. Why did North Korea declare the war? They tried to make the peace few days ago! However, the truth was different. They were moving towards us. We didn’t had time. Our family started to pack our things. Mother prepared food, and my father packed things like clothes, quilt and other things. I also packed things we need, and finally left the house. I wasn’t sure that we will be able to see this house again. I loved my house. I loved the yard. I loved everything related with my house. I heard our bull crying. I wanted to see him for last time and say goodbye, but my father didn’t let me go. The only way to be safe was going to South. We were in the Kwangju, and our destination

Busan was not that far. We decided to ride train because walking must be so tiring. However, everybody in the town knew that North Korea invaded. So when we arrived, it was very chaotic. Every residents and people from other area gathered to the station. They all looked same. They held food and things they need, almost same as us. My father said, “We must not be apart. When we fall apart, let’s meet at Busan station!” Every train going to South was full. We didn’t have the chance to ride on, but slowly moved forward. Finally, there was only one train left in station. Everyone ran to the train. The fact that North Korean Army invaded made them crazy. The captain tried to get as many people as he can, but he couldn’t get every people. Fortunately, me and our family were all in the train. Soon, the train departed. I couldn’t see outside of window. I was so sorry for the people who missed the train. During the travel, the coal dust came into my eyes. I couldn’t see anything. But I was glad because I didn’t have to see people who looked so tragic, sad, and hopeless. I only heard the train moving forward, silently. Pg 6
