The project is a catalyst that excavates the suppressed histories of the Queen Victoria Market site to spark activism in the future. Acting as a lens, it urges the citizens to see beyond the surface layer of built fabric as the only evidence of a city’s achievements, therefore revealing the city as a palimpsest of multiple perspectives. The museum operates on two levels, with a catacomb museum below ground that preserves the artifacts of suppressed histories, acting as a provocation. Above ground is then the translation of these ideals into the future, in the form of follies that grow out of the voids. They consist of a research centre, theatre, forum and community kitchen. As a symbol of this new power, the museum entry becomes the materialisation of creative construction a process of taking the recognised image of the market and distorting it until it becomes unrecognisable, therefore allowing a new control. This grand descent leads the visitor into the great hall - a memorial to those buried on the site, a space lit by boxes marking where graves were once located and the presence of death becoming the unifying symbolic core. Drawing inspiration from the New Theatre’s role in promoting social and political critique in theatre, this theatre is a transparent one in all senses. First and foremost, it places the spectator in a position of power and surveillance, encouraging them to adopt an attitude of inquiry and criticism. The operations of the theatre also become transparent with the procession that leads from the underground rehearsal rooms and workshops below ground up to the plinth of the theatre. Sitting on this plinth, the theatre acts as a lantern for the site, to be seen into and out of. The community centre challenges the city’s arbitrary valuation systems by taking the assigned status of its position on the Queen St Axis and designating it to altrusitic rather than egocentric purposes. Its monumental silhouette terminates the access, then breaks into individual ribbons with a sudden change in angle. Lastly, as a stand against the censorship of recorded history, the gallery of oral histories allows people to record their own histories. The leadpipes carry their stories up to the forum above ground, then form a wall to amplify the discussions across the site.

The principles of monastic life describe the human heart as a desert that requires nourishment by the presence of god – the living water. This idea is materialized in the monolithic form of the building, which evokes the powerful rocky desert landscapes, penetrated in at the heart by the open chapel - a void that evokes the movement of a stream of water. Furthermore, the egalitarian approach of Lutheran worship believes that everyone has direct access to God, and thus the chapel is open and accessible to all levels of the buildings, providing individual worship spaces throughout and allowing the ordinary and the divine life to intertwine.

The predominant use of the telescope in astronomy has produced a limited understanding of space heavily based on imagery - one that is unable to represent the flux of activity, the miriad of unfelt forces and the potency of the bodily experience. The project is a learning tool that provides a multi-sensory experience of outer space, engaging the senses of vision, sound, movement, touch and emotion. Programatically, it is a shelter for amateur astronomers, school children and teachers to rest, eat, participate in seminars and do independent research. The roof and ground plane work to create an illusion akin to the feeling of disorientation felt in outer space due to zero gravity. The matt black roof appears to float over the mirrored white ground plane, with slits allowing strong ray of light to enter and pierce the darkness of the ceiling. The columns, dispersed sporadically throughout the pavilion, are clad with phase change material and metal, which either transform the sun’s rays into heat or amplify the cold, creating nodes of extreme temperature throughout. Lastly, the noise-absorbing panels convert the surrounding sound into counterwaves, creating an eerie silence that can be felt as a constant vibration.

A SERIES OF HOUSING E X P E R I M E N T S Supervisor:
Peter
Corrigan,
2013
In this studio, Peter Corrigan encouraged us to ignore our preconceptions of what architecture was and to explore housing in all its (im) possible forms. The following houses were designed and produced as fast and rigorous three-day exercises, completed for the twiceweekly studio classes. The results are based on based on our responses to a range of stimulus material and most importantly, our attitudes.

FINDING COUNTRY E X H I B I T I O N
VENICEARCHITECTURE B I E N N A L E 2 0 1 2 with Finding Country Cooperative
Finding Country is an aboriginal idea that binds groupings of aboriginal people to the place of their ancestors, past, current and future. The Finding Country Exhibition was initiated by indigenous architect Kevin O’Brien, as a collateral exhibition part of the ‘Common Ground’ Venice Architecture Biennale in 2012. The central artwork was a 8x3m map of Brisbane, consisting of 50 individual grid submissions emptied by half to find something special. My role involved co-ordinating participants, designing the graphics and producing the main artwork. I was also involved with the exhibition setup and supervision during the Biennale in Venice.
