Recent Work Autumn 2015

Gabrielle Nowicki

Hello! Since spring 2014, I’ve been making primitive, fun sculptures made from found objects and recycled scrap metal and wood. My inspirations are old, handmade toys and folk art and I try to keep that spirit, making do with what I have on hand and working with limited technology. I also enjoy working with paper and I apply these same principles to collage. This past year, from autumn 2014 to autumn 2015, more papier mache and air dried clay modelling have been incorporated into my automata. I’ve continued with the file folder collage project. I’m equally surprised and excited that November 4 will see the completion of a year’s worth of collaging. When I began making them last fall, I had no idea that the momentum for this project would last for a full year. All three hundred and sixty-five 6.25” x 4.25” collages are made from recycled

manila file folders and various sources of paper. The best part of this journey was discovering that I was often working in threads of series, sometimes jumping back, to revisit them. The collages will be used as references for further work. To date, there are several incomplete figurative sculptures and automata projects to be finished. I am building prototypes of handmade music boxes, to incorporate into my automata. Gabrielle Nowicki, November, 2015
